JOE AND I MET IN 2018 at a Razorback tailgate, and we soon became inseparable. I like to say that it was his personality that won me over, but really, it was his dog Charlotte. We bonded over us both being huge dog lovers - I had one myself, Harper. Joe and I and the dogs moved in together in the Spring of 2019.
About a year later, we had recently signed a contract to start building a home in Fayetteville. Our daily outings included driving by our lot to see the progress. Friday, January 31, 2020, Joe and I drove to our lot before dinner, and he proceeded to get down on one knee and asked me to be his wife.
What was already so special turned even sweeter when I saw the ring. The center stone is an aquamarine that was my grandmother’s. The original ring was given to her for her high-school graduation by her brother. Growing up, I always loved the stone and knew I wanted it to be mine one day. Joe was able to use the center stone and reset it to create my engagement ring. We decided to set our wedding date for November 7th, 2020. A couple of months went by and bam...Covid hit. We found ourselves working from home, building our house, and planning a wedding. Then, we got another dog, Jax. In the months approaching our wedding, we found out we were pregnant. The excitement set in and we decided to go forward with our wedding. Two weeks before we were to say “I do”, we got the news that we were miscarrying. With the stigma that loss holds, it’s important to recognize that it is an experience that can lead to isolation and disconnection from family and friends. We had an amazing support system and chose to not hide what we were going through. The wedding approached and through the grief, we were able to celebrate the two of us joining together with our sweet baby watching over us from above.
The day of the wedding, a few things didn’t go as planned. Before the ceremony, we discovered my veil had a huge rip in it. During the middle of our ceremony, Joe and I kissed each other and proceeded to walk back down the aisle. The only problem was, it was before we had exchanged rings! My uncle, who was our officiant, realized this and everyone laughed as we marched back down the aisle to finish the ceremony.
What comes to mind when I think about everything that went “wrong” leading up to and the day of our wedding, is that in the end, it came together to be one of the best days of our lives. We were able to join together in a marriage that understands imperfection, compassion and love in good times and bad. And to me, that is the definition of marriage.
