Annual race raises money for breast cancer Emily Martinez staff writer Race for the Cure is a 5k race that raises money and awareness for breast cancer. The 24th annual race happened on September 24 in downtown Toledo and is put on by the Susan G. Komen foundation.

This year about 10,000 people participated and their goal was to raise $1 million. They donate 75% of the money to local programs and 25% goes to breast cancer research.

Many students at Northview participated in the 5k run. Some students know someone bat-

tling breast cancer so they walked or ran to support them. Some of NV sports teams participated in the race including the cheer team, Girls’ Soccer, and the Marching Band. “The cheer team came together to run in the 5k for breast cancer.

The race was so fun and we donated a lot of money for a good cause,” senior Chloe Gomez said.

“This year was the first time I participated in the race. I was with a group of my friends and we ran most of the 5k. The weather was so nice it was a great day filled with happiness and laughter. I am definitely doing the race again next year,” senior Kelsea Gorsha said.

Race for the Cure is a worldwide event. Many other cities, states, and countries host races of their own to donate money to their local programs and breast cancer research.

People from all over come together to support breast cancer patients and survivors. Many breast cancer survivors and patients participate in the race and some even give speeches where they are honored at the race.

This event raises thousands of dollars every year and has thousands of participants and volunteers.

The Susan G. Komen foundation is the biggest breast cancer foundation in the US. It is a non-prof-

it organization that was started in 1982. The foundation raises money that is donated to local programs that helps patients and survivors. They also donate

money to breast cancer research, education about breast cancer, screenings for people that may not be able to afford it, and treatment. The annual 5k is the

Mr. Christy discussed his plan for Math Club, how he thinks this experience shouldn’t be limited to just upperclassmen.

“Students shouldn’t be scared to try it, regardless of their grade or the math class on their schedule,” Mr. Christy said. “Sure we’ll have some hard prob-

lems, but most of the problems are at least ones that anyone could understand what the problem is about, even if they don’t know the math to get the right answer.”

Northview has many different opportunities to get involved with math, with various competitions throughout the year, including American Math Contests 10 and 12 (AMC 10/12), Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics competition (OCTM), Ohio High School Math Invita-

tional Olympiad (OHMIO), American Regions Math League (ARML), and Who Wants to be a Mathematician? (WWTBAM) contests.

The contests are usually one-day long, consisting of rigorous problems but a more savory reward: feelings of accomplishment at solving some of the hardest problems any mathlete has faced.

“Math Club is a good way to find some of these problems as well as get help and work with others

to solve said problems,” senior Kiran Kodali said.

He believes Math Club will help in his future career of Chemical Engineering and also as a source of happiness.

“I love math in general, just solving problems, no matter how easy or small is really satisfying,” Kodali said.

This new Math Club will feature both an increase in technology at NV and will help with reducing the stigma around doing math for fun.

Texts being used for Math Club are from the website of the Art of Problem Solving. This website specializes in unique math problems that stretch the mind.

The website includes Math Club’s google classroom code: s75tesg, and Mr. Christy encourages everyone to join and experience the fun.

Math Club hopes to thrive and grow into a network of student problemsolvers, driven to solve new questions every day.

Be careful where you’re leaving fingerprints and footprints around Northview.

The school has added a Forensic Science class to the curriculum this year, students started their first unit analyzing fingerprints and were very interested to learn about the different patterns that people can have that individualize their prints.

In this unit students also studied the different fingerprint development techniques.

In the second unit they are analyzing handwriting.

This includes any alterations, fabrications and forgery that could be in any journal entries, threatening letters, or criminal confessions.

Students recently practiced forging and disguising their own handwriting, “I like trying to find the difference between handwritings and comparing which one belongs to who,” junior Can-

dice Reno said.

There are many students that are interested in the class as there are five class periods of Forensics.

“I’m excited to show students how forensics is real life application of the core material they have learned in Biology, Physical Science, and/or Chemistry and Physics,” Forensic Science teacher Kristen Ireland said.

Mrs. Ireland hopes to include beneficial field trips in the coming years such as visiting a coroner’s office. Mrs. Ireland hopes that the class can eventually partner with a university to make a College Credit Plus class available for students.

Have you ever wanted to take a day off of school to view and enjoy famous artworks?

On September 27th, students from AP Art History and Intermediate 3D art classes traveled to the Toledo Art museum.

Students spent the entire day viewing and enjoying art. As they were lead around the museum, they applied the knowledge they had gained in class to the works they were seeing.

They had the opportunity to go on several docent tours. The docents acted as a guide and teacher for the tours.

The first was a tour of the Berlin Painter exhibit which has pieces from museums all over the world, including the Louvre and Smithsonian.

The docents lead them through the history of these extremely rare and important Greek vases.

They had an informational session where they learned about the detailed history behind the vases.

There was also an exploratory session where they were given clues about an assigned work

AP Art History and Intermediate 3D Art classes sitting on the steps of the Toledo Museum of Art. After this, they discussed the different types of art they saw. and had to locate it in the gallery.

“The museum trip allowed us to take our understanding of art beyond the classroom. We were able to see the work of the Berlin Painter and walk through the UT 3D studio to learn more about what college art classes are like,” senior Kat Arndt said.

After the tours, both classes regrouped and headed to the museum cafe. The cafe had gourmet dishes, including handmade gnocchi.

Students were given the opportunity to freely explore the museum and sculpture garden after lunch. They were able to explore many styles of art

in rooms like the classic court, great gallery and Kara Walker exhibit. Art history students mainly explored the galleries while 3D art students ventured outside to the sculpture gardens.

At the end of the day, both classes regrouped to discuss and analyze the art they saw.

National Merit Semifinalists are awarded Kaushy Gera staff writer School is still in the first quarter, but four students have already gone through grueling rounds of competition, sacrifice, and hard work. No, this was not the Olympics but something even better: National Merit Semifinalists.

Seniors Erika Chen, David Mulligan, Adam Murphy, and Maxwell Qian are all semifinalists in the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

This test has been known to be solid indicators of the SAT. “The award means there’s still more work to be done,” Qian said. “You can’t get ahead of yourself. Once again this isn’t the last step; there’s still one more hurdle.”

“There are other activities and interests that I have dedicated more of my time to that I take more pride in,” Chen said.

What’s more, Northview has tied with Ottawa Hills to have the most Semi-Finalists in Northwestern Ohio, a big accomplishment for any school. Ottawa Hills has been known to be a high standard in the state, so being able to reach that point in merit is an honor for these four.

Community shows love for Olander Max Kelso staff writer Students may have noticed the swimming area closed at Olander park this summer, a popular destination for kids and adults to relax and have fun. The cause of no swimming; no money for Olander to hire lifeguards.

That was because the Olander park system was not put on the levee list in November 2016, denying it the normal funds it receives. So after many months without upkeep and improvement at Olander, a group of residents organized to form the I Love Olander group. Their goal; raise awareness about the Olander park system This issue did not only affect Olander, but Prairie Park, Whetstone Park, Fossil Park, and the Southview Savannah Oak Park where all denied funds this year.

But for Linda Hoffman, founder of the I Love Olander group, Olander was in desperate need of attention, “It really hurt my heart to see the park in such disrepair and it just felt that we needed to do something,” She said.

The First action of the group was to plan an event to bring the park back into the public eye.

The event attracted a wide range of Sylvania residents and businesses to help raise awareness to the park. Junior Erika Bihn said this in a different way when asked about her time at the event, “This I Love Olander Day... brought the community together.” An estimated 2,000 people attended the event ,150 people volunteered, and that doesn’t include all the businesses that donated.

The general consensus of the committee is that things need to be made for a larger age

group and the community needs to put more in to get more out of the park.

“The park seemed deserted this summer; you never saw people using the volleyball courts, or renting the shelters, and because of that I think the geese and the vandalism at Olander increased,” Mrs. Hoffman said. The group’s focus is Olander because that’s

classroom, but in the Writing Club, they have free range according to Ms. Stefango.

“I don’t think students get the chance to be creative enough in high school, so I wanted a space where students could come and express themselves as they pleased,” Ms. Stefango said.

The club meets every Wednesday after school. During their meetings they respond to different writing prompts. The

students have their own range of freedom for how long their stories are and what they can be about. They focus on a writing prompt and then they can start writing from there.

A majority of these prompts include creative writing and self expression, the club also works on other topics such as editorials.

The event, according to Mrs. Hoffman, was a success. Many people who came to the event didn’t even know the park existed until then. Nineteen students from Northview came and volunteered, along with the NV drumline.

Students do not always feel comfortable expressing their feelings and opinions in the

Homerun derby or homeroom derby?

Sometimes homerooms are just reading through the slides and informing the students about what’s going on at school.

On September 29, homeroom was a little different than normal.

Teachers were promoting the Charity Softball game by live streaming a “home run derby” to the homerooms. “The camaraderie with all the teachers is just for charity. Hopefully we get lots of students to come out and watch the game. It’s all for fun,” Gold Team Coach Andy Roth said.

Meanwhile in the rest of the school, teachers and students participating in the homeroom Relay Race were trying to win Class Olympics points with their homerooms.

started with a sheet of paper that had a baseball diamond along with lines for signatures on it. Their goal was to run to another homeroom, get another signature, and send the next person to the following destination.

“We’ve never done anything like this for homeroom, but I think it was a great idea to get more people engaged. I hope we get to do more things like this in future homerooms,” senior David Mulligan said.

As they did this, they would be wearing a jersey, a baseball cap and carrying a baseball glove. When they made the last run, they were to run to the gym.

The freshmen came in first gaining 12 Class Olympics points.

“If we actually tried during the Class Olympics activities, I think our class can get those points, but until we compete, we aren’t going to get any points,” sophomore Sereena Jallad said.

Diversity Club celebrates differences Riley Runnells

Northview has always been a school that prides itself on the promotion of diversity and acceptance. However sometimes students can still feel as if they don’t have a safe place to go and talk about their lives and stand up for themselves and for others, thus was created the Diversity Club, or Co-Exist.

Co-Exist is a club where students meet once a month to sponsor anti-bullying week, promote acceptance, peace, self-advocacy, and stand up for those who

can’t stand up for themselves.

This club tries to create safe environments in the school for students to support each other and fight against discrimination, harassment, and violence of all types in schools. Co-Exist is a wonderful place for students to come and feel safe and loved.

This year a new club has been added to NV’s selection.

Co-Exist is now teaming with the N-Compass Student Diversity Council, a group administered by Tami Blue, Ryan Creech, Chris Fahim, Steve Kwiatkowski, Darla Omey, Steve Swaggerty, and Stacie Wachowiak.

This group is used for equipping students to have the ability to build friendships, resolve conflicts, empathize with others in the Sylvania Community, and preparing students for the rich diversity they will experience in their lifetime.

“Our mission is to be the change. CoExist is a safe place to talk and meet people, while N-Compass is a group that is planning on changing the world and making a difference,” advisor Ms. Blue said.

Students have already begun joining, and according to the group, the first meeting went really well. They played a get to know you game and they discussed what their mission is and what their plan is for

the year.

Their first goal is to hang flags in the cafeteria to represent every nationality at NV. They hope that by doing this students who come from different backgrounds will know we are a school that welcomes everyone, according to Ms. Blue.

“I think this group is a great idea, it’s a wonderful way for students to come together and work hard to change the world and make it a better place,” senior Mary Matrisciano said.

Co-Exist and N-Compass are two very great groups, and if you have any questions talk to the advisors and check out the group.

Feldstein speaks about entrepreneurship Emily Thielen staff writer Near the end of September, students who are members of the leadership academy got the chance to hear from Sylvania Schools alumnus and Sylvania resident, Mark Feldstein.

Students gave up their lunch period with their classmates to instead come eat and learn about the experiences, as well as stories that Feldstein has developed through being an inventor and entrepreneur.

Feldstein also focused on his unique beliefs of leadership.

Throughout his career, Feldstein has developed several patented products that have been sold on QVC, and by retailers based on what consumers want. One of Feldstein’s most successful inventions is the “Singing Bird Clock”.

This is a very unique clock with a bird at every hour, and when the time reaches these hours, the bird call goes off. One of Feldstein’s newest inventions that he was able to bring and present to the students, was a unique umbrella that catches water when it is folded up. These are just two of the many products Feldstein has developed throughout his career.

Feldstein was also able to share many of his beliefs and secrets behind his success.

One thing he focused on that really stuck with a lot of students is when he claimed he is only as good as the people who work for him. “ This really stuck with me,” , said sophomore Gillian Myslinski. “ It was a good point that I’ve never really thought much about”.

One way to keep his employees confidence high and ideas

flowing is he never wants to tell an employee they are wrong. He never wants people to be afraid to express their ideas. Feldstein also walked the students through the discussion when designing a new product.

Feldstein claims he usually tries to sit back and listen, then speak near the end to emphasise that it takes the whole team to come up with the product, so it can be at its best.

Feldstein also makes the working environment as comfortable as he can for his employees. He wants his workers to show up in casual clothes, and make their area as comfortable as they want. Feldstein claims he often shows up to work in a Tshirt or sweats, and doesn’t want his employees to be dressed nicer than he is. Throughout the whole office everyone is very nice and encouraging to one another.

Feldstein’s goal is to make sure everyone who works for him shows up passionate and ready to get started every day instead having a negative feeling towards work.

“This was definitely one of the best leadership lunches I have been to”, claims sophomore Mackenzie Wachob. “With his

experience and unique approach to create a well efficient workspace, I definitely learned a lot of important skills it takes to be a leader”.

Are high schoolers too old to trick or treat?

Do you think it’s acceptable to Trick or Treat while in high school?

Well it is, there is nothing wrong with it. It’s fun to dress up in a costume, be something you’re not normally.

You can walk around the neighborhood with your friends.

Go to a new subdivision

you’ve never been to and walk around there, have a good time trying not to get lost.

Going Trick or Treating keeps you from spending your own money on candy. People will hand you candy, for free.

For those of you that are worried the people passing out candy will think that you are too old, how will they be able to prove your age? You’ll be wearing a costume!

As long as you take the time to either make or buy your cos-

tume and wear it, no one will mind.

It’s the kids who go out and don’t dress up that ruin it for everyone.

Bring your little siblings or cousins to go Trick or Treating with you, no one will question that.

Going out gives you something to do for a few hours.

After you graduate adulthood kicks in and you’re too old to Trick or Treat, so enjoy it while you can!

Well folks, it’s that time of year again; Homecoming. Homecoming can be a wonderful thing, what with getting dressed up, going to dinner, dancing with your friends, and having a blast. However, there is one controversial topic when it comes to Homecoming, or any school dance for that matter. That topic is grinding.

Grinding has been a school dance tradition since I was a freshman. I still remember walking into the gym so confused because everyone was grinding in a pit and I felt so scared and innocent. I knew there was grinding at dances, but I never expected it was like that.

However, now that senior year rolls around, my opinion has changed. I’ve only ever grinded at one dance for like ten minutes, so my opinion might not be as relevant as someone who has had more experience, but personally I can see both sides to grinding.

On the one hand you have teens who want to go to dances and follow this tradition that has been set since as long as we can remember, and they don’t see anything wrong with it because that’s how we were taught. Part of me knows that we are like this because we are afraid to do something different, but what’s frustrating is when people grinding judge the people who are dancing and having fun as if they’re the weird ones. They are allowed to do whatever makes them comfortable at the dance, and some people just want to dance around like idiots instead of grind, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it.

On the other hand you have administration that doesn’t want to watch students perform this act on school grounds, and I don’t blame them for that. I mean, what’s worse than being in the grind circle, making eye contact with a teacher, and having to see them on Monday after the dance when they know what you did??!!

This year’s dance was one that changed some things, however.

People have a lot of complaints from the lack of permission from our adminstrators to grind. Personally, I think that students should be allowed to grind at dances, even though it’s kind of gross. Looking at it with perspective, there are a lot of other bad things that students could be out doing, but instead they’re at dances grinding, which isn’t necessarily the worst thing.

The biggest problem over the grinding was the music. People can maybe deal with stopping grinding to dance normally, however the music this year was nothing short of an epic fail, and that wasn’t the fault of our DJ. We are all in high school, I think at this point we should be allowed to listen to songs that have risque innuendo, not to mention the fact that those explicit words can be cut out by playing the clean versions of songs, which the DJ could’ve easily done.

All in all, grinding is a tradition that is not necessary, but we keep it going because it’s something we know and something we’ve always done. Will that tradition end? Judging by this Homecoming and the DJ that stopped in between every other song to tell us to stop grinding, and yet the kids kept going, I think it’s a hard tradition to break.

Something we have to think about though is, just because it’s the way things have always been, it doesn’t mean we should keep doing it.

But in the defense of the students, the administration could use some lightening up on this subject.

Who knows, maybe we will find a new dance that is taboo to replace grinding, just like grinding replaced things like the mashed potato, which in its time was pretty taboo. It’s all about perspective and our current perspective views grinding as a fun dance that is even more appealing because of the controversy. And as the saying goes, “Old habits die hard.”

College Presentations Whether you’re an upperclassmen or a lowerclassmen, it is never too early to start planning out your future (especially when it comes down to college).

Luckily, Northview gives us several opportunities to start planning. If you have not already heard, there have been a variety of College Presentations here at school.

Colleges from all over Ohio send over a College Representative and share any information or questions you may need if you are considering attending that particular college. From the presentations I have been to, I have realized lot of people seem to blow them off though because many think they are not really worth going.

I was actually surprised at the small amount of people that go, especially to the presentations that represent big college names (like The Ohio State University).

I find these presentations to be extremely helpful and definitely worth going to. Asking questions is one of the most important things to do at a pre-

sentation. The people from the college can really give you their own perspective on them. Even as a junior last year, I went to a few; The Ohio State University and The University of Toledo.

This year, now as a senior,

I have a more specific view for deciding where I want to attend school next year. I went to the presentations for OSU, UT, and OU.

Before the presentations, I was still undecided to where I want to go. But now, I was finally able to narrow it down.

They for sure reduce my stress level of the whole application process and they have helped me on deciding my top choices for where I want to go to school next year.

I can see why people might argue that they are useless because who wants to sit and listen to someone speak for 45 minutes straight right? But when the person speaking is talking about your future and about where you might be spending the next four years is not useless.

Even if you already visited that college, more information about a school you are interested couldn’t hurt (especially if it gets you out of class)! Plus, you never know, they might mention something at the presentation that they did not mention on the college tour. ~Andrea Almeida

Can you really do it all?

The pressure on teens can be overwhelming at times, but can it be unrealistic as well?

When a teen turns 16 it seems the race is on to get their license and get a job. However, the usual school expectations are still in place, such as playing a sport, taking high level classes, participating in clubs and extracurriculars, to name a few.

A student is expected to spend at least seven hours at school, now add a part time job to the equation, which adds at least another five hours at work,

that only leaves 11 hours left at home. If the student tries to get at least nine hours of sleep, that only leaves two hours of ‘freetime’.

That ‘freetime’ can then be eaten up with things that have to be done, like homework, eating, and the possibility of chores.

That’s before any sports or activities. Which cuts into that two hours.

Therefore, even a part time job can overload a student depending on the classes, amount of homework per night and activity in sports and clubs. All of these combined may leave the student with little to no free time

or relaxation time to de-stress or do what they like to do.

In theory, everyone should have time to have a part time job along with high school, but with the workload, the statistics seem to be increasingly stacked against students.

In conclusion, when a student is thinking about getting a job they must think about the time they are willing to give up along with the extracurriculars you are committed to. You can’t let yourself feel pressured to overload yourself. There are only a few hours of free time you have, spend them wisely and spend enough time on yourself.

How to successfully prepare for college Erin Chambers co-editor in chief November 1 is quickly approaching, and if you’re a senior you know that means early applications for colleges are due soon.

Going through the college process has been a stressful one, so I’m here to share what you can do leading up to senior year and as a senior to make things easier on yourself.

First and foremost, the most important thing you can do is to

visit any school you think you might be interested in.

I was surprised to go to certain schools I thought I was going to love, and I ended up hating them once I actually got on campus, and vice versa.

After your first few visits you’ll begin to learn the various traits you look for in a college, and it makes it easier to find more colleges you’ll probably like.

Another important aspect in the college process is the application itself. If you’re applying to a school that is on The Common

Application, start the application when it comes out August 1, even though you have until November to finish it.

Trust me, you will get so busy senior year, you’ll be glad you got some of it out of the way so you can enjoy yourself at your last high school events in the fall.

The essay prompts come out even earlier, and I recommend knocking those out in the summer if possible.

I know I still have not written mine, but it would be so nice to have that weight already off my back because the last thing

I want to do once I finish my homework is work on another essay.

Finally, the last thing I want to share is to start your search for scholarships early, and make yourself aware of the various deadlines so you do not miss out on a scholarship that may have a September or October due date.

There are so many random scholarships out there with a variety of different due dates, so organize all of the ones you want to apply for and make sure you know when you need to get those applications done.

This is another reason where starting your common application in the summer helps, because it allows for more time to research and apply for scholarships.

Seniors, this is a stressful time, but also an exciting time as people begin to receive the first of their acceptance letters and experience their last year of high school. Yes, there is a lot to be stressed about, but the most important thing throughout this process is to make sure you are still making the most of your final year at Northview.

Hollywood nights or Hollywood not?

Lindsey Hubay staff writer It’s October, which means it’s officially Homecoming season.

You spend all the time and money to get a gorgeous dress, a handsome suit, the best accessories, the bids, the flowers, and of course the fancy dinner.

But in order to have the perfect night, the theme of the dance has to tie it all together.

This year the theme is Hollywood Nights, and not everyone is happy with it.

This year’s Homecoming theme is unoriginal. It’s basic, kind of boring, and not very creative. The students of Northview are some of the most creative people and the Homecoming theme could have reflected some of that creativity.

Hollywood Nights is a theme you can throw together last minute. A theme that will hopefully look pretty in the end, but isn’t some elaborate scheme.

I took the debate to the halls and asked some of my fellow peers for their opinions.

What I took away from this was that STUCO should have more student involvement in the development of the theme

for Homecoming, but overall the theme is only for a night and a lot of the students are perfectly fine with it.

The student body had all sorts of different thoughts in regards to the theme. Some students are really excited for Homecoming and think the theme is really classy.

“It’s my first Homecoming and I’m excited to take my date to a dance with such a classy theme,” freshman Isaac Miklovic said.

Others found the theme to be quite basic, including sophomore Molly Thomas. “I just feel it could have been something a little more fun, not so simple,” she said.

To my surprise, a lot of stu-

dents didn’t even know what the theme was. “What’s the theme?” seemed to be a popular question I was asked.

When it comes down to the numbers, the majority of the students thought this year’s Homecoming theme definitely wasn’t the best, but it also wasn’t the worst.

“This is my last Homecoming and I’m just excited to be with my best friends one last time. When it comes down to it, the theme won’t stop you from having a great night regardless of whether you like it or not,” senior Jake Pizza said.

As the leaves begin to change and the temperature drops we say goodbye to 2017 Hollywood Nights.

According to senior Lily Kalanquin, the dance was an amazing time, a great end to many Homecomings. The students danced the night away including this years’ senior court. The girls looked glamorous on and off the dance floor.

“It was an incredible experience that I will never forget, truly once in a lifetime,” senior attendant Maizy Crandall said.

Although there was some skepticism about the music, the students agree that Homecoming is about so much more than just grinding. It is about the people you spend the night with and the memories that come with it.

“I’m so glad I got to be on court with such amazing girls. They made my senior Homecoming experience so much fun. I am so excited for Brooke that she won queen, because she truly deserved it,” senior Homecoming attendant Mary Matrisciano said.

All in all students would agree that the night was a great time. This Homecoming will surely be remembered by all and go down as a very successful time for Northview High School.

And many students at Northview have considered it one of the scariest movies they've seen yet.

But what are the classics that have lasted from the generations? Here we explore those classic horror movies that will leave you scarred and your skin crawling.

Generation Z is represented by BGSU student teacher Ms. Murdock. She said the most popular or frightening movie of her generation would be Insidious.

Representing generation X is PE teacher Mr. Briggs. He said that the most popular movies from his generation would be Friday the 13th and Poltergeist.

For the Baby Boomer generation is Government teacher Mr. Lefevre said The Exorcist would be the scariest movie of the generation.

“People who read the book would not go in the same room as the book” he said.

Fall fashion or dressing down?

Cozy into fall with your favorite sweater and some leggings matched with a pair of tall boots. If that’s not your style then throw on a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt and call it a day because it’s time for fall.

Fall clothing falls on a spectrum. Junior Ellie Seiler is one of the students who prefers stylish fall clothes. Her ideal fall outfit is “leather boots with knit socks, black leggings, a loose knit sweater with a bulky scarf,” Seiler said.

Seiler also thinks that one of the most important colors that contributes to fall clothing is a variety of browns. The clothes matching with the colors of the leaves is an important fall aspect to her. “It’s so easy to create a stylish fall outfit because everything can be put together in so many ways,” Seiler said. Seiler’s favorite thing to wear is a big plaid scarf since they’re so comfy and cute.

On the other side of the fall fashion spectrum is junior Anne Barchick.

She prefers the warm and comfy clothes. Barchick prefers a sweatshirt with leggings, boots and ankle socks. “A sweatshirt, because they’re comfy and keep me warm when the school is really cold,” Barchick said about her favorite fall clothing item. Barchick also likes sweatshirts because they’re easy to grab and go when you’re having a rough morning.

No matter what side of the spectrum you fall under, Autumn is a time you can wear whatever you want, “Dress for the weather you want,” Seiler said, “not the weather you’re having.”

Lee is a junior at Northview while simultaneously being a freshman at the University of Toledo. Lee’s academic success has led him to start college courses early, but still graduate with the Class of 2019.

What classes do you take at Northview?

I take orchestra and teacher aid for the lower group when I have time. I’m also taking gym next year so I can graduate.

What’s the biggest difference between high school and college?

College gives the students a lot more freedom. My teacher actually told me to pay attention to the people around me because a quarter of them wouldn’t be there after a couple more weeks. There are a lot more classes and people who care, depending on the classes you take.

What was it like transitioning from NV to the University of Toledo?

I honestly didn’t really think of it as a transition because I didn’t know what to expect, and a lot of Northview seniors who I was familiar with were headed there too. Being a people person definitely made the transition easier for me.

Have you decided what you’re majoring in? If so, what and why?

Yes. I am a biochemistry major with a pre-med concentration. I have a passion for music and I love science, so I thought why not have both in your life? I want to be an orthopedic surgeon with a specialization for arthritis in string musicians.

What has your experience at UT been like?

My experience at UT has been great. I love the college attitude that everyone seems to have. There aren’t as many cliques like there are in high school, so talking to people becomes much easier.

Eve Gross TAG Day, a day of fun, friends and raising money for the Northview Marching Band and Orchestra. This year, members of the band and orchestra raised over $$$$.

NV Orchestra teacher Pamela Thiel stated, “TAG Day is the best fundraiser held every year.”

TAG Day is also a way for members of the band and orchestra to spread the word about the NV Music Boosters.

The NV Music Boosters helps plan and run fundraisers, like TAG Day, and helps with other expenses, including uniforms, instruments, instrument repairs and trips.

“TAG Day is a fundraiser that both the band and orchestra hold every year to pay for the music programs,” senior Brendon Doss, a member of the NV Concert Orchestra

He does not enjoy TAG Day because of all the walking and going out of his comfort zone to go door to door to ask for a donation. “One bright side of the fundraiser, however, is spending time with friends and having fun,” Doss stated.

Junior Mary Mains has been involved in orchestra for 5 years and has been a member of the NV Chamber Orchestra for the past 2 years.

“I don’t like TAG Day because it gets tiring and really boring, but I do it to support the band and orchestra,” Mains said.

Going into high school from junior high is a big leap.

Students have to choose their classes and after school activities, with almost no experience of what they are like. But there’s one exception… eighth-grade band students who will be attending Northview the following year have the opportunity to join the Wildcat Marching Band for one football game to get the full high school band experience.

Band directors Nathan Heath and Emily Hage put their idea of having the junior high students join their marching band for one game into action.

“We wanted to give the kids an opportunity to try something new without a total commitment,” Mr. Heath said.

This year there were 36 junior high students from both McCord and Arbor Hills Junior Highs. The Marching Band has only been doing the junior high night for two years now, but plan on continuing it. “Still going strong,” Hage said.

The junior high students get to experience what the band does Friday nights from marching into the stadium to stand tunes. As well as the opportunity to see the behind the scenes of pre-game and halftime. They were able to play with the band in the stands as well as on the field during pre-game.

During the end of the pregame performance, the junior high students get to stand with the Marching band and play the fight song. The junior high students are given the same stand tunes as the high schoolers to play along with, such as “Born to be Wild”, “The Race” and “Fight Song”.

I’m been playing Alto for seven years, Tenor for four years, and piano on and off for ten years.

What inspired you to join band?

I really wanted to learn how to play an instrument, so I did!

What is your favorite memory?

My favorite memory is going on the Chicago trip and eating at the Hard Rock Cafe.

What are your future goals?

I’m not sure yet. I’d like to keep playing but I’m just not sure in what from.

Broomball comes soon Anastasia Carter staff writer Everyone knows about the football, basketball, and baseball teams, but did you know Northview has a recreational broomball team? They do and they’re called the Ice Ninjas.

It’s called Broomball for a reason, the players actually use brooms, although they are taped with duct tape.

They use nets larger than a hockey net and hit a large orange ball. Players are required to wear helmets and mouthguards, knee pads, shin guards, and elbow pads are optional.

The Young Life ministry, that many students are a part of at NV, started up a broomball league in 1977.

Since then, it has been renamed the Greater Toledo Broomball League whereas originally, it was just a tournament.

The ministry organized a tournament where there would be teams of 10.

For periods of eight minutes, the ice would be split in half allowing two games to be played. To this day, that is still how the games are played.

“I think the team was pretty successful considering the members were mostly all new,” junior

Sydney Chapetta said, the team captain and goalie.

Games are played Friday and Saturday nights, the earliest being 10p.m..

The games may be late, since ice time is limited.

“Broomball is a fun club sport girls can play on Friday or Saturday night.

Anyone can play broomball,” League Manager Monica Steele said.

The team’s practices start on December 1 and the games begin on the first week of February. “I’m looking forward to the people and how fun the season is and how much of a family we all are,” Chapetta said.

Gold team wins charity game Lindsay Hubay staff writer Teachers gathered on two teams to compete against each other for a good cause in a game of softball October 5.

The money raised by the tickets and concessions,$1300 ,all went towards The Victory Center via danceGOLD. The two teams, Team Roth in Gold and Team Dubiel in Black, were tied until the very last run. Ultimately, Team Roth won the softball game 5-4.

“Seeing Mr. Roth coach baseball and not teach chemistry was cra-

zy, like teachers are so different outside of the classroom,” sophomore Cecile Schrediah said.

On the other side of it, the teachers playing loved the rivalry.

“Seeing all the teachers make fools of themselves playing softball made my day. I love being back on the Northview staff,” French teacher Kelsey Liske said.

Boys’ and Girls’ Golf team sweep NLLs Grace Schlageter

Both the Boys’ and Girls’ Golf NLL's took place at Eagles Landing this year.

The Girls’ team had nearly a perfect season leading up to the championship. They knew they would have to play their best if they wanted to clench the title.

"During our season, we started off with a perfect record 7-0. We already played every team in the league at least once and won, so we were kind of expecting a perfect season,” junior Lexi Knight said.

“We had two tough losses back to back against Bowling Green and

then Perrysburg, so we ended our season 8-2. Going into the championship we were completely tied in points with Bowling Green and Perrysburg, so it was whoever played well that day.”

The girls ended up winning the NLL title this year. "We work our entire season for this title and to actually win it was a great feeling and all the work we did finally paid off," Knight said.

The Boys’ Golf team also had a great season. "Before the match our coach told us to play our game, play smart, and if we are able to do that then we will come out with the NLL title. And we did just that," junior Jacob Geis said.

With many fall sports quickly coming to an end, the Cross Country teams have high hopes for the end of their seasons. Both the runners for the Girls’ and Boys’ teams have had a successful season, hoping to continue with the duration of the fall.

The Boys’ recently ran at Brighton, Michigan on September 30 with sophomore Simon Masters finishing in the top 30 overall.

“At the start of the season, we had a lot of new guys who

were still getting accustomed to the atmosphere of high school cross country. As the season progressed, they have evolved into key members of the team, and I think that has really helped contribute to our success,” senior David Mulligan said. As a team, the Cats finished 9 out of 17 at Brighton.

“Our few of our athletes have been battling mid season illness but now we are getting healthy and faster each week.

This is the time of year our training changes and I expect to see big time drops in the next couple of races.” Coach David Briggs said.

“Many of our runners had season bests or even lifetime PRs,” senior Jenna Kill said. In addition, the JV placed second as a team in their division.

“We have improved in that we now push each other more to do better and strive to be better. Additionally, we are more of a team, in that we support each other,” Kill said.

The next race for the Cross Country teams will be an NLL championship and will take place October 14 in Whiteford, Michigan.

National sports take over the country Patrick Andres sports editor It’s that time of the year in sports - that is, the best time of the year. Baseball’s playoffs are underway, and it is the height of the football season.

Hockey has joined the fold, and basketball soon will too and soccer, golf, and NASCAR all are filling niches, leaving no fan left out of the fun as the frost descends.

The playoff field in baseball is an interesting conglomerate of newcomers and veterans to the postseason game. On the National League side, the division winners remained unchanged from last year, with the Dodgers, Nationals, and Cubs claiming the three flags. But the two Wild

Card teams - Arizona and Colorado - made their first postseason appearances since 2011 and 2009, respectively.

In the American League, only the Indians and Red Sox returned to the playoffs from the last season.

The Dodgers have been favored to win the World Series for much of the season, but as they slumped, the Indians have increased in reputation on the strength of their 22-game winning streak.

Don’t count out the experienced Cubs and Nationals in the Senior Circuit, and Justin Verlander, Jose Altuve and the Astros, who nearly eliminated the eventual world-champion Royals two years ago, figure into the mix as well.

Where to begin with college

football? With the kingpins of the Big Ten, the Penn State Nittany Lions, who seem poised for a big year - Saquon Barkley and Co. have already dispatched Iowa at Kinnick Stadium and Indiana, and are ready to make a run at a second straight conference title.

Michigan and Wisconsin are ironing out problems, and Ohio State already has a loss (to Oklahoma). This would appear to make the Lions the favorite in the B1G going forward.

In the rest of the college world, the usual suspects are out in full force - Alabama, Clemson, and Oklahoma check in at one two and three in the Associated Press Poll.

The Crimson Tide have simply overwhelmed the rest of the Southeastern Conference, posting outrageous scorelines of 59-0

(against Vanderbilt) and 66-3 (Mississippi) along the way. The Tigers, who have beaten Auburn, Louisville, and Virginia Tech early, are also on fire.

Surprise teams right now include Georgia, TCU, and Washington State, the latter having beaten USC 30-27 in a dramatic Friday night affair in Pullman.

The professional game has been, for the large part, overshadowed by off-field developments - namely, the ongoing debate over the appropriateness of players protesting racial injustice and police brutality during the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

President Donald Trump slammed the players for engaging in such protests, and the players responded by protesting en masse. This has largely over-

shadowed an exciting campaign on the field.

The Chiefs are ranked first in the AP’s NFL power rankings, led by rookie running back Kareem Hunt, a familiar name to any fan of Toledo Rocket football over the last few seasons. The Packers, Steelers, Falcons, and Broncos round out the Top 5 at press time.

Successful years for both soccer teams Steven Barry staff writer Both the Northview Girls and Boys soccer teams have had successful and exciting seasons.

The Boys Varsity team are currently 5-4-3 and the Girls Varsity team are 4-10-1.

On September 24, the Boys

Varsity team secured a 2-1 win over the St. Johns Titans. Goals were scored by Juniors Ryan Storey and Nathan Masters.

The Girls Varsity team lost 0-1 against the Anthony Wayne Generals on September 20 and tied 0-0 with Findlay on September 25.

“This season was all about figuring out how we play as a team and what our strengths and

weaknesses are. After we got it figured out, we started seeing success,” Sophomore Sereena Jallad said. The Girls Varsity team are really looking forward to tournaments and are hoping to go really far this year.

After a difficult couple of games, the Girls Varsity team finally won a game against Maumee 7-0 at Maumee. The Boys Varsity team also secured a 4-1

win against the Panthers, goals were scored by Senior Marios Kamilaris, Junior Ruben Gonzalez and Sophomore Eli Humeniuk.

The Clay Eagles showed their dominance over the NV Girls team on October 2, the Eagles won 2-0 and the Wildcats could not compensate.

Boys soccer lost their game against Ottawa Hills 3-2 on September 28 and secured a 4-0 win

over the Springfield Blue Devils on October 3.

During their game against Springfield, on October 4, the Girls Varsity team won 3-2 with goals from seniors Emily Jamieson, Lucy Creech and Madison Keller.

The girls are hoping for a huge final win over their crosstown rivals, the Southview Cougars.

Football on fire with 7-0 winning streak Patrick Andres sports editor For the first time in 12 years, the Northview football team has Northwest Ohio sitting up and taking notice. The Wildcats are unbeaten, and they have won every way possible blowouts, shutouts, comebacks, nail-biters.

It would appear they combined every one of those methods into one in their fateful September 22 clash with Springfield in Holland. One of NV’s greatest wins of all time began less-than-ideally as the Blue Devils seized a 21-0 lead - what senior Jeffrey Blanks described as “a rough and slow start.”

The Cats, though, were undeterred. Senior Luke Pawlak nailed a field goal to trim the lead to 18 with 1:45 remaining in the half.

Another swath of the lead was cut out by senior Joey Okeke’s 27-yard run, and senior Brandon Leach’s sneak from the 1 pulled the Wildcats within four as the fourth quarter began.

“I knew we weren’t out of that game at all,” Blanks said. “I tried to keep my teammates up and let them know we aren’t out of that game.”

After a largely uneventful final frame to that point, NV took over on its own 7 with 125 seconds remaining on the clock.

Leach directed a textbook drive that took the Cats deep into the Devils’ red zone, but with :33 on the clock, he was sacked. With time running out, however, Leach hit senior Jarrett Batanian in the end zone, and NV won the game.

ing Napoleon, the running game carried the day for the Wildcats. Okeke rushed for 150 yards and Blanks added 110 more on the ground. Each ran for two touchdowns, and Trent Simms took a punt 55 yards to the house to round out the scoring.

“I’m proud of the team for being 6-0,” Blanks said after that win. “We have to stay focused week-byweek.”

A sloppy win followed for NV against Bowling Green on Homecoming.

The home team was beaten at times, but managed to stay the course, and the Wildcats took a 16-13 lead into the break.

“Bowling Green was clearly not one of our best games,” junior Jayden Bolden said. “We just weren’t ourselves and it showed.”

Probably Lionel Messi because I feel like we have similar skill levels.

Singing “Come Home Perry” by Phineas and Ferb because it really fires up everyone’s emotions on the team.

What is your favorite memory of NV soccer?

W\hen it rained last year and Bailee Thompson and I went mud sliding after practice.
