The game of life, when everything you do has a side effect just the same as everything has a cause. Seniors who got to play the game during Finance 101 experienced that something could be planned then it may change or a situation could pop up.

For two periods on Friday, November 11, all the seniors were in the gym and auxiliary gym for the Finance 101 event.

The students played a game of life with the goal to have a positive number in the bank account by the end.

The students, who just got out of college in the game, were given a job and a salary amount.

Then, like the Game of Life started seeing what this form of life had in store for them by spinning a wheel.

The students were given a possibility of a spouse and children, and by spinning the wheel would get an issue for the family.

Whether the situation be good or bad, the students would have to figure out how they could pay for the new issue like breaking a bone or buying a new car, along with the necessities like groceries on one paycheck.

The students spun a wheel after receiving their jobs and salary and had a situation presented to them like, “You dropped your phone in the toilet and now have to pay $50 to replace it.” The seniors had to work around issues all while taking care of the other finances like housing, cable, or loans. Most students ended up in the positive hundreds while a few fell into the negative numbers.

“I liked finance 101 because it taught me more about money tactics and smart shopping.” Senior Mikayla Simpson said.

Northview’s ACT prep course has officially taken action. Run by Psychology teacher Sarah Rhine, the course consists of six sessions that intend to help students prepare for the upcoming ACT. Each session is dedicated to a particular section of the test.

In the first session, students took an actual full length practice test. After taking it, students score the exam and get accurate feedback by receiving an actual ACT score.

After the first session, students have review sessions over each section of the test with designated teachers. The English and Reading/Writing review is done by Dan Dick, the science will be done by Andy Roth, and the math by Greg Christy. These sessions are held after school throughout the first week of December.

This course is intended to promote the “tips and tricks” to help students work through test-

ing efficiently and answer questions more accurately.

“We generally go over general strategies of success such as preparation and tips for the ACT. This would include being prepared the night before and the morning of the test, and different tips for the math, science, English, and reading/writing portions of the test,” Mrs. Rhine said.

Students are given an official ACT prep book to use throughout the course. The book is used for the practice test, and also for test review.

“I think that the course has really prepared me. I feel much more comfortable and confident with the ACT now,” junior Kelsey Warniment said. “I’ve never taken the ACT before so I was a bit nervous about taking it at first, but now I definitely feel much better.”

The usual sign up capacity is about 30 students, with preference given to juniors and seniors.

With help from teachers, they have worked together to do as much as possible to prepare students for the actual ACT test.

Welcoming future Wildcats at Open House Karen Pan

Incoming freshman and their parents walked through the halls of Northview on November 3 to see if they wanted to call themselves a Wildcat next fall.

The doors opened at 6:45 pm for the current eighth graders, so they could check in at welcome tables, pick up student information packet, and move to the Performing Arts Center (PAC).

They were helped by members of the National Honors Society and other students from clubs like World Language, Theater, and athletes.

Then, from 7pm to 7:40pm,

many of the administrators the Academic Department Chairpersons, and the Guidance Staff gave a brief presentation on NV school life, the program of studies, academic opportunities, and graduation requirements.

After the presentation ended, parents and students were able to roam the halls of NV, specifically to each classroom to meet different teachers. They also went to the cafeteria where the families received refreshments and were offered tours led

by NHS members.

In the main and aux gym, different clubs and activities had booths to give information to the incoming freshman and their families.

“It was fun to see all the incoming freshman coming next

year. I gave a tour to one little girl and her family and it was awesome to see their faces light up while walking around the school,” senior Grace Figliomeni said.

There were two music quartets, one set in the main lobby and the other set in the stage of the cafeteria. Taking place in the cafeteria, Harmony Road Show performed for the eighth graders, singing songs that included Shut Up and Dance by Walk the Moon as well as NV’s alma mater.

NV students also wandered the halls to give directional help to the incoming freshman.

Demonstrations took place, one of which included the Spanish room making quesadillas.

Eighth graders broke into small groups with current high schoolers to talk about Northview and to get to know each other.

For the second year in a row, the Engineering program will send a group of students to Huntsville, Alabama to compete in the NASA Student Launch Program.

The Program, which is held at the NASA space center from April 5 to April 9, is designed to allow engineering students to learn the process that NASA engineers go through when sending rockets into space.

The Northview team is composed of 11 seniors and four juniors, with seniors Shane Banachowski and Brian Pribe as the chosen team leaders. Engineering teacher Ryan Reed is the team’s advisor while Mathematics teacher John Eckhart helps out with all the math involved in the program.

For the competition, each team has the opportunity to make whatever it is that they want as long as it involves rockets. NV’s team chose to create an ATRS, or an All-Terrain Recovery System. This is a system that uses inflatables to secure a rocket at the end of its flight so that no damage occurs in water or on the ground. The objective is for the rocket to go over one mile high and then safely land on the ground. Senior Brad Crandall came up with the idea to make an ATRS. The team has been working on this project since the beginning of the school year, and will continue working on it until they travel to Alabama in April. Getting hypnotized at school sounds like something that would only happen in a movie, but Sarah Rhine’s AP Psychology students had the opportunity to experience firsthand the process of hypnosis, and a lucky few were even hypnotized.

Mrs. Rhine’s psychology students learned about the states of consciousness. By having hypnotist Michael Brody come in, students were able to engage in the process by either watching or experiencing the aspect of suggestibility right in front of them.

“After experiencing the process of hypnosis I hope students have a better understanding of what hypnosis is and is not, as well as a real world application of what we talk about in class. It’s not just definitions and terms, but the things we talk about really do apply to the real world, and this is just one example,” Mrs. Rhine said.

Brody began by introducing hypnosis and choosing which students were going to be hypnotized. He did an exercise to look for which students could relax easily, which makes them

Junior Erika Chen was starstruck when she thought she saw Evan Peters, but little did she know at the time she was actually just talking to the hypnotist.

“It was a really weird experience and hard to explain. When I looked at Mr. Brody, I didn’t see Evan Peters, but I felt like and

“It felt peaceful and calm when put to sleep. It was like I was sleeping, but I could wakeup whenever I wanted,” junior Mary Matrisciano said.

It was apparent some students were in an extreme state of relaxation as they were able to be convinced they were on the beach and some even thought

Watching peers get hypnotized or even experiencing hypnosis is certainly not something that happens everyday. Hypnotist Michael Brody was able to make learning come alive with his presentation.

Medtech students hosted Northview’s annual blood drive on November 18.

They used the tagline “Finding Hemo” to promote the event.

Senior MedTech student Catherine Geer created t-shirts for the blood drive and many students pitched in to make locker signs and posters.

All Med Tech students helped organize the event with additional help from parent volunteers. Local restaurants donated food and drinks for the event.

“I loved being a hand holder for the blood drive because I ensured people that they weren’t going to die while giving blood,” Geer said.

Overall, they collected 101 pints of blood to be donated to the American Red Cross. Many students and staff participated in the donation.

“The blood drive was a fun event which also saved lives.

From the theme, Finding Hemo, to the restaurants that donated food, everyone lends a helping hand. It was a lot of fun to help run it and a big thank you to all those who donated,” senior Mikayla Simpson said.

riley’s NORTHVIEW YOUNG LIFE went camping for the weekend.

They played lots of fun games and rundown Co-Editor activities with each other throughout their time there.

Lots of excitement was in the air as Northview Young Life Korrin Zollweg took on Camp Storer for their Opinions Editor Fall Weekend on November 13.

Every year in the fall, Young Life attends this camp in Jackson, Michigan. “It is always something that many people took forward to participating in,” sophomore Madi Sample said.

“Fall Weekend is an amazing experience. There is nothing better than spending the whole weekend celebrating Christ with your best friends,” junior Chloe Gomez said.

Students left NV on Friday night and came back on Sunday afternoon. “Not only does

Fall Weekend get you closer with God, but it gives you a time where you can cut out the outside world and show love to those around you who need it,” senior Kaylin Elchert, said.

NV, along with about 15 other schools in the area, attended the weekend. “You spend a whole weekend with people who make you feel super loved,” senior Maddie Moore said. Twenty-five students from NV went and about 200 people from the Toledo area were there.

“Fall weekend is like no other. From playing all the crazy games and screaming songs at the top of our lungs to the quality time and deep conversations with some of my favorite girls, it is definitely a weekend to remember” NV’s Young Life Lead-

One of the many games that were played at Fall Weekend included “thunderdome.” In this war game, students have to get in a big circle and take their shoes off so that they’re just standing in their socks. Then, someone will yell for a group of people to go into the “thunderdome.” For instance they'd yell “all girls into the thunderdome” and all the girls would run in and tackle each other trying to take each other's socks off.

“Young Life Fall Weekend was such an amazing weekend that I’ll never forget. I can't wait to have even more fun in the summer. We are going to Rockbridge Young Life camp in Virginia,” sophomore Lexi Knight said.

In what could be the single most stunning political upset in American history, Republican nominee Donald J. Trump was tapped by voters across America on November 8 to be the 45th President of the United States.

President-elect Trump’s campaign message,“Make America Great Again,” apparently resonated with voters as he won a number of states that were projected to fall in favor of his opponent, Former Secretary of State Hillary R. Clinton.

“Now it is time for America to bind the wounds of division,” the President-elect said in his acceptance speech, offering a congratulation to Secretary Clinton on a “very, very hard-fought campaign.”

Only a few weeks ago, Trump lagged in the double-digits behind the Secretary in some polls. However, many conjecture that the brief but unexpected and meaningful re-opening of the investigation into Secretary Clinton’s use of a private email server while Secretary of State conspired with major polling errors very late in the election to sink her chances.

Clinton opted not to give a concession speech the night of her loss, delivering one the day after. She stated that the American people owed Mr. Trump a chance to lead.

President-elect Trump jumped out to an early lead with an unexpected win in Florida. He followed this up by pulling out wins in North Carolina and smashing Clinton in Ohio, often outperforming his polling average by significant margins.

With the Secretary on the brink, Trump finished the blowout by carrying Pennsylvania and Wisconsin to take at least a 290-232 lead in the Electoral College.

It is worth noting that Secretary Clinton captured the popular vote. She joined Al Gore in 2000 as the second candidate this century to win the popular vote but lose the electoral count.

Mr. Trump became the first President in the history of the United States to never have held any type of political or military position upon taking office. He has spent his life in various real estate, business, and entertainment ventures.

In other election night news, Sylvania Schools passed its levy by the sizeable margin of 57 to 43 percent, averting a tidal wave of budget cuts that would have left the district reeling.

The local library, the zoo, and Imagination Station all saw their levies pass. Incumbent U.S. Senator Rob Portman also defeated Former Governor Ted Strickland to keep his seat, as the Republican Party continued to keep control of Congress.

Why is it so cold in this classroom?

Why is it that everyday I feel the need to bring a blanket to school? This school is as cold as one big giant freezer. I am sick and tired of not being able to wear all my cute clothes that I buy because it is COLD. Look, people can say I complain all they want, but that won’t make up for the fact that I am shivering all class period begging people to hand over a sweatshirt. Teachers may roll their eyes, and think it is not a big deal, but what if it really is?

What if the shivers and blue lips are causing me not to focus on my tests? I am sure I am much more on point when I am not focusing on the room temperature and instead am comfortable.

There are alternative actions that could take place that would help increase the temperature of the classroom without increasing energy use. The school does

not have the best insulation and the tiles and walls are not good conductors of heat, making the school lose more heat than necessary. It is very cold in the school, and there are different ways of going about the situation that could produce the optimal temperature.

We could use solar energy to increase temperature if we allowed more sunlight to penetrate the building, similar to a greenhouse.

Senior Cassie Scouten has a blood disease called Raynaud’s Phenomenon which makes blood flow to her extremities low. This causes her to be colder than normal and colder temperatures can set off an attack. Once in class she became too cold and had to have a classmate hold her hands to increase blood flow and tem-

“The students around me started to freak out because my hands turned blue. All I wanted was for someone to just hold my hands,” Scouten said.

I hear around the school numerous times per day, I decided to interview the teachers on what they thought about their classrooms. Let me remind you that this is teachers, not students.

“We put a lot of thought into making students feel emotionally comfortable and academically ‘comfortable’ but “I don’t see how we can ignore their physical comfort, not to mention the teachers’,” English teacher Jillian Stefango said.

“I have never been in an airconditioned building that is so humid that envelopes literally seal themselves,” Social Studies teacher Mike Czierniakowski said.

“Generally my room is very cold, students will walk in and say how cold my room is. Some of the yearbook and newspaper students keep blankets in here to

use while they work in the computer lab,” Journalism teacher Sarah Huey said.

English teacher Dan Dick explained how the system works.

“The current system of heating and cooling our building, does not allow for individual teachers to adjust the temperature and airflow in their own classroom.

Even then, the ambient temperature of the room is based on a thermostat not centrally located in the room - it is by the door which may or may not reflect the real temperature in the room.

Therefore, the computer in a building several miles from the school may not read the actual room temperature. More importantly, the students whose desks are located right beside the units bear the brunt of the uncomfortable air blowing from the system.”

End of election College applications

This election has been a crazy rollercoaster ride, from thinking some of it was a joke one minute to realizing the seriousness of our country’s fate the next, we have all felt every emotion over the last year.

Although the months leading up to the election were crazy and when election night came around, possibly stressful. Some may breath a sigh of relief now that Donald Trump is our president elect while others have gone into full blown panic mode.

The people that were rooting for Hillary Clinton were not as happy for the billionaire and expressed their anger very openly through twitter, Facebook, snapchat, etc.

Not only are they expressing it through the internet, but many have begun to protest. From New York, to Atlanta, to San Diego people have taken to the streets.

Although protesting sends a very strong message to the government and the media, now

that the election is over it may be argued that protesting has no purpose since the results of the election can not be changed.

The protesters are concerned for the safety of their friends and family when the new President’s inaugurated in January.

While many of the protests are peaceful some of them have turned violent.

My question is, why hurt family, friends, police officers, and more over something that is unchangeable The scenes have been taking place everywhere, chanting such things as “Hate won’t make us great” or “Veteran’s against Trump.”

While protests may make some people feel better, it is ineffective now that he has already been elected.

We have to put faith in our country that Trump will do what is best for us and not be prejudiced during his time in office. ~Emily Nowak

The deadline for early action to many colleges was November 1. This means for me, that all my college applications are officially in and being looked at by college admissions.

The common app was a ton of tedious work. Some people decided to wait for the last minute, but I have spent months working on it. Like many others, I had to be very sure that everything on my application was perfect. College is one of the most important things in life, so I had to make sure I did not mess it up.

It is really scary to think that the next four years of my life will depend on a common application and an ACT score.

The ACT score is a major stressor for many students looking to get into college.

To say I am finally done taking it is a huge relief. I always got so nervous taking the test, knowing that it could affect whether I could get into the

college of my dreams.

Let’s not forget about the essay, writing about how I have transitioned into adulthood. I had about seven people edit this essay, and spent many nights in bed trying to make it as perfect as possible. Even after you think it is perfect, a couple days go by and you think it is boring and start to switch it up again.

When you get to the end of the application, you then have to spend a ton of money even submitting it to schools. Like seriously? We already are going to be spending so much money on college, we should at least be able to apply for free.

As you can probably guess, it is a huge relief that I have finally turned my application in, and schools will be reviewing all the achievements I have made over the past couple of years.

It is a bittersweet feeling. I have the relief of the application being turned in, but now I have the stress of getting accepted

into school. We all have that one school we want to get into so badly, but what happens if we don’t? These are the thoughts I will now have in my head replacing the ones stressing over the common application.

It is so weird to think that the whole process of doing college applications is over. This year is going by so fast, and I am really not sure how I feel about it. I still feel like I am not even a senior, but now I am a potential college student with colleges looking at my application. This is a scary thought, and my future after high school is finally being put together.

The little check marked “submitted” by my college application has made me realize that I need to take total advantage of my last year in high school with my friends and the ones who have made my experience here at Northview so memorable. ~Haley Jones

Online or in stores - which is better?

When people think about Thanksgiving, they think about family and turkey, but one of the main topics that comes up during that time of year is Black Friday shopping; the amazing occurrence where shops everywhere put on big blockbuster sales that attract the attention of most of the population.

However, there is a day where you can get the exact same deals all from the comfort of your own bed or couch. Cyber Monday is the new Black Friday, and despite what many shopaholics advocate, it’s a better option.

Cyber Monday is easier and faster; all you have to do is press a button on the pad of you laptop and it’s shipped. Why would you spend all that time driving to the mall to wait some more in a line to a store, fighting people for whatever you want, then finally walking out of the store just to realize that you bought the wrong size in the midst of all the chaos.

And don’t even mention having to wake up earlier than you do for school (which should be against the law) and still have someone beat you to the store.

Imagine this glorious scenario: you wake up in your comfortable bed and pull your computer to your lap. Then you go on whatever website you want and browse through everything they have in their inventory, bookmarking your favor-

ites, checking out, and shipping it to your house all from your bedroom. The minute you’re done, it’s back to drinking coffee and having a lazy morning.

Also, with all the driving back and forth during Black Friday, you waste more time and more money that could be spent and used elsewhere. With Cyber Monday, the most expensive cost you pay is the wifi in your house.

So here’s this question for you: why spend more money, time, and effort in getting something that you could easily get from the comfort of your own home?

There is no answer because clearly Cyber Monday will be prevalent in this “battle” of these sale days.

As everyone knows with Thanksgiving comes another wonderful holiday, Black Friday. Sales, sales, sales, and shopping; how could it get any better? Some argue that Cyber Monday beats Black Friday, but I don’t see how it even compares.

While the idea of sitting in bed and ordering clothes with just one click is enticing, it does not even come close to getting the real experience of going into the stores and seeing the chaos first hand.

Fighting for the items that you saw before the other person is something that you could only have once a year, so why would you trade that for hiding behind a screen?

Online shopping, for me, has always been an issue. The clothes may look good on the computer, but once they arrive

Thanks before gifts When we hear the word November we think of Thanksgiving, not Christmas. Thanksgiving hasn’t even happened and people are already getting ready for Christmas.

Decorations have been in stores since October, Christmas holiday songs are on the radio, kids’ Christmas wish lists are being made, Santa is in the mall, and families are putting up their Christmas trees. Isn’t it a little early for this?

Let’s be honest, Christmas is right around the corner, and who doesn’t love getting ready for it? Students get two weeks off of school. That means Christmas parties, decorating, baking, hanging with close friends and family.

But let’s not forget why

Thanksgiving is important and not hurry to the next holiday.

We have many things to be thankful for, and it is important we spend at least one day to not

When I am sitting down at Thanksgiving with my family and relatives it really makes me realize how lucky I am to have them and to be sharing quality time with them. I am also grateful to have food at my table and a roof over my head.

Thanksgiving is definitely a holiday that is overlooked and it shouldn’t be.

Thanksgiving is a time you get to spend with your family.

But let’s not forget why Thanksgiving is important and not hurry to the next holiday. overlook it all.

We are very lucky to even be able to sit down for dinner this Thanksgiving, considering many are starving all over the world.

Another issue with shopping online is sizes. Every size is different for every store and if you aren’t actually there to try on the items you are interested in then you could potentially order something too small or too large.

When you go to Black Friday you are able to get your clothes right there right then after you have tried them on and decided that you like the way it looks on you.

All you have to do is check out and take your latest treasures home.

With Cyber Monday you have to wait for your purchases to come in the mail and that could take as long as two to three weeks. If you are like me and are not patient whatsoever then this part especially irritates you and if you want your items faster then you are required to pay more, which is not an option for some people.

Black Friday is a once in a lifetime experience, going with your friends early in the morning and having the time of your life, buying all the things that you want because they are on sale for prices that only come around once a year.

Cyber Monday doesn’t hold a candle to the Black Friday tradition, which is proven by its enthusiastic followers and popularity here in the United States.

How often is it that someone does something for you? It could be something as small as picking up your dropped pencil or something as large as spending thousands of dollars on a birthday party.

Do you ever stop and think about the wonderful things people do for you and how you can give back what you’ve been given? Appreciation is something that is widely needed and not used enough.

For me personally I’m horrible at showing appreciation. I am given such nice things and opportunities and I never quite know how to show that it really matters to me.

I guarantee that every teenager at one point or another has been scolded for their lack of appreciation, but in all honesty sometimes it’s hard as a child to show someone you care.

When you’re so busy with everything that’s going on in your own life, sometimes it’s really helpful to slow down and take the time to show someone that you genuinely appreciate what they do for you. Here are three good ways to do so.

First of all, appreciation doesn’t have to be shown in a grand gesture. You can merely write a thank you note to show how much you care about someone or something.

I know that when all else fails, I can always hand write a note to show my parents that I appreciate what they have done for me or my friends for being there for me.

On the note of simple, even just taking the time to thank them for the specific thing they did, not just saying thank you, or giving them a huge bear hug would be greatly appreciated.

Second, be helpful to them. People always need help in some aspect or another, and sometimes are afraid to ask for it. If someone you love has gone out of their way to do something for you, an easy way to repay them is by helping them in return.

Pay attention to things they need to do or maybe a gift they’ve been wanting, and go out of your way to help them with the project or buy them the thank you gift.

If you don’t have the kind of money to spend on a thank you gift, you can always make something. That is closer to the heart anyway and more personal to show the person that you spent a lot of time to show them you care.

Third, just simply be positive. It is absolutely amazing what positive energy can do to situations and to other people. It is not only healthier to surround yourself with positive people, but for someone like me who is a firm believer in the powerful influence of the people around you, it is vital.

People feed off of other people’s positive vibes, and it helps them to feel happy when they’re sad or give them that extra boost of happiness during the day.

If you can’t take the time to make the person a gift or write them a note, the least you can do is have a strong positive attitude when around them to help them get through their day.

It may not seem like much, but when you treat someone with kindness and positivity it puts a smile on their face and shows them that you care immensely about the hard work they’ve been putting into your life.

The final rundown: appreciation is key in healthy relationships. When you show appreciation for the people you love, they are more inclined to help you in the future when you need it. If you lack appreciation, it makes said people feel like their hard work means nothing, and they won’t want to continue that behavior in the future.

So this Thanksgiving, do your part to show the people who mean the most to you and do the most for you that you appreciate them, even with something as simple as a hug!

What is inside Wilbur?

Paula Werner’s honors biology class dissects fetal pigs to learn about the anatomy of their bodies and relate it to human bodies. They examine all parts of the pigs from the brain and eyeballs, to the heart and intestines.

Dissecting pigs is a good way to fully learn and understand about what’s inside of them; but is it inhumane?

Dissecting pigs is a great way to have a “hands on” experience and really learn about the anatomy of pigs. That being said, part of me, as cheesy as it might sound, feels bad for them. I wish there were other ways that we could learn about what’s on the inside of Wilbur without cutting open an animal.

These pigs are unborn piglets of sows that were killed by the meat packing industry. These pigs are not bred and killed solely for the purpose of dissection, but are extracted from the deceased sow's uterus.

I used to think that dissecting pigs was the grossest thing I’ve ever done, but now, when we bring the pigs out and dissect them in class it doesn't really bother me. I can touch the heart and intestines with no sense of nausea whatsoever. I’ve become oblivious to the fact that I’m still cutting open a real animal.

All this being said, I have learned a lot from the dissection of these pigs and I have started to find it quite interesting. Wacky weather to the max In Ohio the weather is all over the place. This summer was particularly a very hot one.

I think we even broke one of the heat records. Working as a lifeguard was definitely a hard job since everyone wanted to cool off.

After a long hot summer, many people just wanted the cool fall. We have barely even gotten that. Even in the middle of October the temperature was in the 70’s. Just now in the middle of November it is starting to cool

down to the 60’s and 50’s.

There has also been some crazy shifts in the weather randomly. One day it will be 75 and sunny then, just the day after, it will be rainy and 50.

It is not just annoying when the weather keeps changing, but it also messes up people's allergies and gets you sick. When temperatures change drastically it is not good for anyone. Being sick definitely sucks.

DanceGOLD raises over $13,000

Students danced the night away as they strived to stay on their feet for six hours while raising money for the Victory Center.

DanceGOLD began three years ago when 2015 graduate Geeta Rao, came up with the idea and put it into action with the help of students in National Honors Society. Since then, it has become tradition for NHS students to organize and plan this event and continue to grow its popularity amongst NV students.

This year students raised $13,670.57 for the Victory Center, increasing the amount raised by over $3,000 from last year’s total $10,315. The best part of it all was the amount of fun students had while contributing to such an amazing cause.

To kick off the night, NV parents Rob Bules and Melinda Restivo spoke about their experiences with the Victory Center and how the services of the charity have helped them and their

families endure the battle of cancer. This set the stage for the significance of not sitting down until the six hours was up.

“The Victory Center has impacted my family greatly because the people that work and volunteer there all understand what my family and I are going through, so it’s great to have that kind of support, and even just have someone to go and talk about it with who really gets it and can help us deal with our loss,” sophomore Ryan Bules said.

Next up, the teams competed in a tug of war and then a “scavenger” hunt to initiate the competitive spirit of the night and get some points on the scoreboard. Team Jive took an early lead with their victory in tug of war, but Team Twist was also up there with win in the hunt.

night and that showed with the increase in the number of dancers and the amount of donations we received,” NHS Adviser Darla Omey said.

Every hour throughout the night everyone gathered at the front of the cafeteria to do a group line dance, but the dancing didn’t stop there. Singing and dancing to throwback songs kept the energy up all night, especially in between events.

Other highlights of the night included a full group dodgeball game and other games where individual people and small groups represented their teams and earned points.

Team Jive maintained their early lead and continued to dominate throughout the duration of the six hours, making for a decisive victory at the end of the night, and finally taking down Team Cha Cha who has won the past two years.

Although the crowds may be enormous, the lines extremely long, and the weather bitterly cold, people can guarantee great deals on all the hottest deals of the 2016 holiday season.

For some folks, Black Friday is not only a thrilling experience, but also an excellent opportunity to kick off Christmas shopping, with outrageous bargains on hot items such as flat screen TVs, gaming systems and Apple products.

But for others, however, it is a curse! Waiting in long lines with hoards of greedy shoppers draining their spirit as they fight to get a deal on a top-selling toys or electronics.

But retail stores are not the only areas that take an impact, many restaurants and fast food joints can blow up with tons of customers.

But aside from the shoppers, there are the employees of the chaotic stores that endure the crowds, fighting customers and endless tracks of festive holiday music.

Every year, these “soldiers” prepare for battle by quickly downing their Thanksgiving meals and heading straight to their selected positions. Whether it’s the cash register or stocking shelves, they always hope for a tranquil shopping experience for both the customers and themselves.

Student musicians prepare for All-State Taylor Rosplohowski Staff Writer

The All-State groups consist of many talented students in different areas that rehearse together for a few days to perform a concert or other act together.

The All-State Orchestra is a group made up of the best high school string, woodwind, brass, and percussion players in the state of Ohio.

In order to participate, string students must place in the top chairs of their region’s orchestra while the woodwind and percussion are selected by auditions.

The orchestra is meeting in Cleveland this year and will get

together towards the end of January to piece together a concert that will show off their talents.

All-state band is very similar to this.

The All Ohio show is a bit different, as it is thespians from all around the state of Ohio who audition for one show to be performed at the Ohio State Thespian Conference.

To participate, thespians must audition online and later attend personal callbacks. AllState Choir participation is very similar to this.

This year, two Northview students are involved in the cast and three are on crew for the show.

Caity Hoffman, a senior, is one of the five involved in

Adam Murphy has been playing violin for a little over five

years.

He started in 6th grade and has continued playing since.

Murphy started taking private lessons at the end of 6th grade.

He decided to get involved in All-State Orchestra because of his love for the violin. Auditioning for other groups such as the Regional Orchestra every year also help him with his audition for the All-State concert.

“I was in All-State Orchestra last year and it was an amazing experience. It’s so great to have the opportunity to meet and play with musicians from across the state who share your same dedication and passion for music. It’s also a very advanced group and without a doubt one of the best I’ve played in,” Murphy said.

What is your favorite memory from being in drumline? “‘Bring Him Home’ was the most memorable song I’ve performed because it is such a challenging song on both an emotional level and a musical level. I loved every second of the final product.”

Are you in another outside music groups aside from NV? “I play in a band called “tashi station” with Spencer Johnson and Noah Jockett. We play local gigs around Sylvania and Toledo.”

The cast of Les Miserables performed an outstanding show that sold out the Friday and Sunday performances, with the others not far behind. According to Director Don Wachowiak, this show ranked in the top three shows he has directed based on experience. With three months of rehearsals, long nights, and endless work, this performance really left the audience wanting more.

Boys’ b-ball looks to defend NLL title Matt Bishop

When November hits each year, high school basketball teams across the country gather for their first practice with high hopes for the season. The Northview team had its first practice November 4 and has been very busy since with practices and scrimmages.

The Cats are working hard to defend the Northern Lakes League Championship that they won last year.

Returning from last year’s team are seniors Logan Jessing, Matt Bishop, Tyler Biggs, and Mason Biggs as well as junior Colton Snow and sophomore Alek West. New to the Varsity team are juniors Joey Okeke, Colin McIntyre, and Brandon Leach and also sophomore Sam Clear.

Jessing, standing at 6 feet 5 inches, is the only returning double-digit scorer from last season. With a large chunk of last year’s scoring gone with last year’s seniors graduating, Jessing looks poised

for a breakout season.

“It’s my senior season so I’m trying to make it my best one yet,” Jessing said. “We want to follow in our footsteps from last year and win the league again.”

The team had their first scrimmage on November 15 against Liberty Benton.

Instead of playing one four quarter game, the two teams played seven periods with the score resetting after each.

The Cats moved the ball very well and went on to win six of the seven periods that they played. Coach Jeremy McDonald told his team after the scrimmage that he was pleased with how well they executed their offense with less than two weeks of practice in. He also said there were still a lot of things they could improve.

The Cats also had a scrimmage on November 18 at home against Fremont Ross. They played pretty well, according to senior Tyler Biggs, but they still could get a lot better.

NV will play their first regular season game on December 1 at St. Francis in what could be a preview of a potential tournament game later in the season.

For most, October means colder weather and fallen leaves but for the Ladykats, it means hard work and basketball tryouts. Tryouts took place on the 28th of October and the first practice was on the 29th. Practice is everyday for two hours, with the exception of Saturday.

Returning to the varsity team are seniors Madi Hornyak, Lindsey Archibeque, Kylie Archibeque, Kallahan Becher, Katie Kopan and Kyley Keene. New to the team this year are juniors Bridgette Stirn, Ally David, Hanna Clunk and Alexa Borgerson.

The Ladykats’ main focus is getting in shape while continuing to improve their skills. Conditioning is a huge part of basketball, so it is imperative that they are in shape in addition to having the fundamental skills of the game.

“Our coaches do a really nice job of running drills that not only improve our skill sets, but also help with our conditioning. The first month of basketball is gruesome when it comes to getting in shape, so it’s nice to be able to participate in competitive drills at the same time to push yourself,” senior Kyley Keene said.

The thing Keene’s most excited about for this season is getting to play with her senior class. “Most of us have been playing together since recreation league in elementary school and although I’m sad that it’s our last year together, we are determined to leave a legacy,” Keene said.

Her and the other seniors on the team are “without a doubt going to miss basketball”. “I have been playing for such a long time that I don’t know what I am going to do without it,” Keene said.

The first game took place on November 25 and was played at home against Whitmer. Both Archibeques, Keene, Hornyak, and Borgerson made up the starting line and Madi Hornyak was the first LadyKat to make a basket for the season. She made a long jump shot from the corner. Unfortunately, the rest of the game didn’t go to well for the Ladykats.

The game ended with a score of 26-66, Whitmer taking the win. Both Archibeques, Keene, Becher, David, and Borgerson all contributed points during the game for NV after Hornyak’s first basket.

“It was all of the senior’s last first game of our basketball careers and I think we will all miss it. The game against Whitmer is definitely not how we wanted to start our season, but it taught us lessons that will help us throughout the rest of the season,” senior Lindsey Archibeque said.

Girls’ b-ball falls in season Wrestlers opener; looks to rebound eager to start Edward Lammie

The wrestlers are preparing for the 2016-17 season which is just around the corner. They are conditioning themselves so that they have every advantage on the mat. In such an intense and physically exhausting sport, no one can afford not to.

“I’m looking forward to the state tournament and seeing what we can do as a team,” senior Trevor Hartbarger said.

“I’m excited to see how we can build off of the success that we had last season and improve into a better all around team,” junior Tyler Garn said.

Although the wrestlers work very hard, they still like to have fun. The team took a couple minutes of practice time to make a “mannequin challenge” video while “Black Beatles” by Rae Sremmurd played in the background. The team had so much fun making it the first time that they actually made another one in the weight room as well.

The team is eager to start the season out right, looking forward to a strong performance at their first invitational at Northwood high school on December 2.

The Sylvania Equestrian team galloped their way to third place in their division. They competed in three competitions on September 18, September 25 and October 2.

Maria Hoschak has coached the team the past two years, and this year she was joined by Assistant Coach Jadie Lou. The team is made up of ten riders in grades 9-12. Seniors Rachel Bare and Amanda Jarbie of Southview are on the squad. Rachel has competed on the team all four years and Amanda has been on the team for a year.

The juniors are Jaret Hossack of SV, who has been on the team for three years, and Zoey Gwozdz of Northview, who is in her first year on the team.

The sophomores on the team are Alyssa Fink of NV, she has been on the team for two years, Abby Wirick of NV, and Thomas Chadwick of Evergreen, have both been on the team for a year.

The freshmen on the team are Alayna Hoschak of SV, Faith Selmer and Ashley Hanf of NV. Each of the riders could ride in as many events as they would like and if they placed in the top six places the team would receive points. The team with the highest score would win the competition. The events were made up of English, Western, Contesting and Saddleseat classes.

“I really liked being on the team it was a lot fun going to different places and different meets, and also getting to meet new people and seeing old friends,” sophomore Alyssa Fink said.

Water Polo is a lesser known sport at Northview.

The season has actually just ended and the team did pretty well.

At the beginning of the season, they had a bad losing streak. They lost four games in a row, tied a game, and then started to pick up. In the end they had a good season according to Junior Parker Hanna.

The team actually lost many players from last year. There were six seniors that graduated from the team and the coaches, Pete Dankert and Alberto Almedia, had to fill these spots.

Soccer takes it to Regional Finals Amir AbouZied

The Boys’ Soccer team ended their season on a successful run in the tournament making it all the way to Regional finals.

On November 2, the Wildcats took on the Anthony Wayne Generals at Central Catholic. In the regular season, NV and Anthony Wayne ended in a tie with a score of 1-1.

The game started off with the Generals dominating the Wildcats but towards the end of the first half, NV picked their game up and had a lot of shots on goal.

Neither team could find the back of the net until the end of the second half when senior Shane Banachowski scored off of a header to put the Wildcats up 1-0.

The Wildcats held the Generals off for the remainder of the game winning 1-0, advancing them to Regional Finals.

“Going into it I knew this

could be our last shot. Jordan threw a perfect throw and we had practiced it all week so I knew where he was going to throw it.

I jumped as high as I could and tried to flick it back post and it went in. It was a hard fought game and it was an awesome feeling to be able to do that for the team and share this journey together,” Banachowski said.

On November 5, NV played Medina to see who would be advancing to State Semi-Finals.

This was the second time making it to Regional Finals in NV history. Both teams started off pretty even until Medina scored two goals ending the first half 2-0.

In the second half, the Wildcats began to play better when senior Tyler Biggs scored a goal making the score 2-1. Despite the Wildcats’ effort in getting back in the game, Medina pulled away when they scored another goal in the last few minutes to end the game with a score of 3-1.

NV finished their season with a record of 15-3-1.

Winter at Northview means hockey, and one of the state’s traditional powers is looking to shrug off a sluggish year last season and push toward a new era of dominance.

After two state championships in three years, the Wildcats have bowed out the last two seasons in the District semifinals.

Now, NV is seeking a new era of dominance mirroring the kind exhibited in those glorious years of 2012 and 2014.

The Wildcats opened their season November 11 with Upper Arlington, a team coming off of a Regional Final appearance.

The campaign was soon off to a sluggish start as the Cats

couldn’t muster a win in their opening series, dropping a 2-1 decision on Friday and battling to a 3-3 draw the next morning against the Golden Bears.

The biggest catalyst for the moderate early success was senior Zach Doner, who netted two of the Wildcats’ four goals.

Back in action a week later, the Cats again struggled to find firm footing in scrapping their way to another tie, this one a 4-4 stalemate with Hunting Valley University School. It was a strong tie for the Wildcats, who were facing a team that had come within a win of the state title.

NV found early encouragement in their next game, taking a 2-0 lead, but saw it evaporate as Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit roared back to win it, 3-2, giving NV a mediocre 0-2-2 record in

the preseason.

Next came NV’s own Cold Turkey tournament, which did not go as the Wildcats hoped it would, to say the least.

A Black Friday doubleheader saw the Wildcats get outscored 10-2 in the two games they played, falling 5-0 to conference rival St. Francis and 5-2 to Cleveland-area power Lakewood St. Edward.

After a 24-hour layoff the Wildcats found themselves in a barnburner with St. Andrew.

Ultimately, NV succumbed, 6-5. Averting total disaster, the Cats salvaged the tournament, and the early season as a whole, with a win over Gilmour that raised NV’s ledger to 1-5-2.

NV’s next game is tonight at 7pm against Findlay in Findlay at the Hancock Rec Center.

Hockey struggles to Swim off to start season strong strong start Liz Liber

The start to the swim season has been quick, with morning practices starting the first week.

This may sound rough, but as a varsity swimmer, it is understood that there is never enough time in the pool before the meets start.

“Swim isn’t about a race, making a time, or even a big meet. Swim is about the love we have for the sport and our teammates. At the end of the day, we’re always there for each other,” junior Julianne Robinson said.

The swimmers will participate in approximately 12 meets, before the start of champion-

ship season. The team practices six days a week and some days there are two practices.

Anyone can swim, but it’s the heart of a swimmer that makes them good, it’s a lot of determination and dedication that is needed to succeed at this sport.

“I love swimming for Northview and being a member of the team. The pool is full of talent and positive attitudes so far. I think this is going to be an awesome season,” sophomore McKenna Burke said.

On this year’s team there are 33 girls and 16 boys. Some of them have been swimming for years, while others are new to the team.

By the end of the season, all goals will be blown out of the water.

OSU pulls away against biggest rival TSP

Ohio State wins 30-27 in double overtime Emily Nowak

The big game that everyone has been waiting for all year has finally happened.

One of the biggest games of the season for Ohio and Michigan. The game that determines who made the college playoffs.

The game that tears friendships apart, the Ohio state vs. Michigan game. Ohio State fans and Michigan fans gathered at the Horseshoe stadium for an intense game.

The big game took place November 26 and Ohio State won in a double overtime against Michigan, 30-27.

Starting out, both teams were very defensive and ended the first quarter tied 0-0. Things got more intense in the second quarter. Michigan was taking the lead with Jordan Speight leading offense and Jabrill Peppers leading defense. By halftime Michigan was winning 10-7.

The teams tied up with a score of 17-

17 by the end of the game which forced them to go into overtime. Both teams played aggressively and defensively and tied the first overtime 24-24 and were forced to go into a second overtime.

In the second overtime, the Wolverines kicked a 37-yard field goal to put them up 27-24. Ohio State finally got the winning touchdown scored by Curtis Samuel. Ohio State fans everywhere were ecstatic. It was a very close game. Both teams played very well but there can only be one winner. The game was very intense and fans on both sides continue to fight about things that happened that could have made their favorite team better.

“I knew that Ohio State would win.

They have always been the better team and this game just proves it to everyone that they are better,” junior Brennen Otersen said.

“Michigan was in the lead for most of the game which shows they are better and that Ohio State just got lucky in the end,” junior Cameron Hall said.

About the athlete:

When did you start playing basketball?

I started playing basketball when I was in the third grade.

What are your goals for the upcoming season?

My goal for our team is just to have great team chemistry throughout the season. Also, I would like to make First or Second in the NLL. What is your pre-game routine?

I don’t really do a whole lot, but I do dance in the locker room before we go out to warm up before the game.

What will you miss most about playing basketball for NV? The thing that I will miss most about basketball at NV is all of the teammates that I have gotten to know over the last couple of years. I’ve grown close to all of them and I will miss playing with them.
