STRENGTHENING Our NAPA VALLEY

$170 Million Ways

We all care about the quality of life in our Napa Valley and want to build a stronger, healthier community. Since 1981, the Napa Valley Vintners has invested $170 million in our Napa County nonprofit partners who provide community health and children’s education services. Our contributions ensure that more than 100,000 clients per year – perhaps you, your neighbor or a colleague – can create better lives that ripple to all corners of our community.

Quality Medicine, Individualized Pet Care. Sarah Mihalek D.V.M., and David C. Carroll D.V.M., both have similar backgrounds in that they have worked for high volume, fast paced, ‘take a number’ type veterinary facilities. As a result, both veterinarians have an extensive level of experience and motivation to bring a different type of pet care to Napa. One which emphasizes individualized patient care with comprehensive examinations. Our staff of two Registered Veterinary Technicians, three highly experienced nurses, and one attentive and personal receptionist, truly make this philosophy a reality.

N

Napa River is a small practice; however, small does not mean the services will be limited. We strive to offer the best, most advanced care within our state of the art, paperless facility. This includes full dental services, ultrasound, in-house and send out laboratory diagnostics, and

apa River Pet Hospital opened on December 1, 2015 under the ownership of David C. Carroll D.V.M. He and his family moved to Napa and made it their home in 2013 when they found their dream property. Napa River Pet Hospital is a family owned business. The hospital’s slogan “Quality Medicine, Individualized Pet Care” spells out the philosophy that Dr. David C. Carroll brought to Napa along with his 40 plus years of experience. With a strong desire to create a high quality veterinary care facility, he completely remodeled 501 Lincoln Avenue, equipped it with the newest medical technology, and hired some of the valley’s most qualified staff. Dr. David C. Carroll was born in San Francisco in 1950. He is the son of Howard F. Carroll D.V.M., one of California’s pioneers in small animal medicine. He started cleaning kennels at his father’s pet hospital at the age of 11. After high school, he finished his Bachelor’s degree in Biology and earned his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1976. He completed an internship at West Los Angeles Veterinary Medical Group, before moving to San Jose for a residency at Crocker Animal Hospital. In 1978 he moved to Watsonville to be near the coast and run his own veterinary practice, East Lake Animal Clinic. He planned on semi retiring but found he missed ‘being in the trenches’. Dr. Carroll enjoys working with animals and being involved in their healing process. For him, fixing a medial issue for a pet is rewarding. He treats each and every patient as if they are his own. His intent is to pass the practice to Dr. Mihalek in five to ten years. Dr. Sarah Mihalek D.V.M. was born in the Peninsula. A majority of her childhood was spent outdoors admiring wildlife, and by the young age of four she already knew she wanted to be a vet. She went to Cal Poly Pomona for a degree in Animal Science and furthered her education at St. George’s University where she graduated with honors in 2011 and achieved her Masters in Wildlife Conservation and Medicine. This is where she developed a passion for exotics. She completed her fourth year of vet school at Cornell University, which is one of the top vet schools in the world. She moved back to California in 2012 and then came to Napa in 2015 to take on Napa River Pet Hospital with Dr. Carroll.

Love Your Garden! ADVICE FROM NAPA VALLEY LAWN & GARDEN CO. By Jacob Blessing

{ Apply some TLC now,

to reap pleasant rewards all season

T

he sun is shining, birds are singing, and with all the rain we have had this winter and spring, your garden is growing in full force! However, it is likely that your garden also may need some help getting back in shape. So, now is the time to get the supplies from the garden center, pull out the tools from the shed and get to work. For some tips for getting your garden beautified by the time the season reaches its peak, read on:

overwintered plants which will give them a nice shape and remove all of the debris (leaves, dead branches, etc.). Get rid of weeds, making sure that you get the roots too, so that they won’t grow back. This is also a good time to sharpen your garden tools, because you’re going to need them for plant maintenance and soil care all summer.

Revitalize the Soil Before planting any new plants, make sure to work two inches of compost into the soil, this will give your new plants the nutrients needed to thrive. This is also a good time to apply an organic fertilizer to lawns.

Compost is available at Crown Hill Stone Supply and the City of Napa yard waste facility. Organic fertilizer is available at Van Winden’s Garden Center.

great! The rule of thumb is to keep the mulch a few inches from the plant stems to prevent roots from rotting. Recommendations for mulch include:

Plant New Perennials and Shrubs

` Shredded fir mulch (available in bulk

Once your landscape is back in shape, it is time to turn your attention to new plants. Some recommendations for good spring plants include:

` ` ` ` ` ` ` `

Lavender Salvia Day Lilies Santa Barbara Daisies Penstemon Yarrow Ornamental grasses Vegetables and fruit trees

Lean towards planting more perennials than annuals, because annuals have to be replaced every year. This means you’re making an investment in plants that will die every year and require replacement. Perennials, on the other hand, last for years and usually survive winter frosts.

Check and Repair your Irrigation System Turn on your irrigation system and spend time investigating each zone. Check drip irrigation for any leaks. Adjust or replace any sprinkler heads that may be out of adjustment or damaged.

Install Mulch

from Van Winden’s Landscaping)

` Compost ` Decorative rock (another option, however it is best to not use rock under and around plants as this will make the root system much too hot during summer months)

Other Considerations Consider replacing your thirsty lawn with drought tolerant, low-maintenance perennials that attract hummingbirds and other beneficials. There are many colorful options, other than cacti. The City of Napa offers rebates of $1 per square foot for up to 750 square feet of lawn replacement through their “Cash for Grass” program. The State of California also offers a rebate of up to $2.00 per square foot, maximum of $2000.00, through the “Save Our Water” program for replacing a lawn with droughttolerant alternatives. A water fountain or other water feature can help drown out sounds from roads and other sources, while simultaneously creating a tranquil, relaxing environment that welcomes into nature.

In addition to organic fertilizers and compost, think about adding mulch to your planting beds and garden. Two inches of mulch helps to prevent weeds and diseases. It also keeps the moisture in the garden and it just looks

Love at First Sight On a ski trip my uncle introduced my mom to his close friend from college. It was love at first sight. They were inseparable, but weeks later my dad was deployed. While in the Navy, they wrote love letters to continue their blossoming relationship. After a few months he sent her a letter that would change her life forever. In his best penmanship he asked her to marry him. It was impulsive, but they both knew it was meant to be. Shortly after celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary mom passed away. Dad became more and more isolated. He stopped coming to family dinners. He no longer met his friends for golf. His garden was overgrown, and the house was a mess. His heart was broken, and his health was suffering. He didn’t know how to live without her. We turned to the professionals for help. Áegis Living is the trusted senior living company known for the finest care, safe home environments, nursing staff, and gourmet cuisine. The activities they provide keep my dad engaged and social. He is thriving and making new friends. And he keeps their love letters neatly tied with a ribbon on his nightstand. Call our residence for an appointment or more information.

n Thursday, May 11, 2017 you will find the real estate agents of Keller Williams Realty Napa Valley, their families and staff, painting, planting, installing and serving at the VOICES Napa location at 780 Lincoln Avenue. VOICES – Voice-Our-Independent-Choices-ForEmancipation-Support is a leader in providing youth with the resources and support they need to make the leap from foster care to successful, independent adulthood. VOICES brings together more than 40 partnering agencies to provide housing, education, employment, and wellness services to transitioning youth, ages 16-24. Created and run by former foster youth, VOICES also offers unique leadership opportunities with the organization. In California, there are 58,343 foster youth, nearly 1,000 of which are placed in Napa and Sonoma Counties. Once youth leave foster care, the odds are immediately stacked against them. Each year, VOICES serves approximately 1,200 youth emancipating out of foster care, group home, mental health, and probation. The services they provide help these youth successfully transition into

independent adulthood while providing them with a loving community and place to call home. Keller Williams Realty Napa Valley is honored to be able to work with the youth and staff at VOICES to bring some long desired projects to completion. The projects will include: • updating the bathroom, • bringing a youthful new look to a well-worn but sturdy wood dining table, • sanding and repainting picnic tables, • planting and gardening, • and much more. As per the VOICES commitment to the facility being youth directed all of these projects will be “youth” approved. The Keller Williams Napa Valley associates will be working alongside the youth, staff and other volunteers to create a community within a community experience. The overall goal of this project is multi-faceted. In addition to the projects being completed, it is also about the volunteers and youth getting to know and appreciate one another on a more personal level while giving the youth an opportunity to explore new opportunities and learn new skills.

In addition to these projects, Keller Williams Realty Napa Valley is also raising funds to replace some of the worn out furniture with new, matching and more modern items such as chairs, desks, and futons from the VOICES “wish list”. May 11, 2017, marks the 9th anniversary of Keller William’s RED Day. RED (Renew Energize and Donate) Day is an initiative dedicated to celebrating Keller William’s year-round commitment to improving our local communities. On this day over 800 offices and 155,000 associates worldwide will be devoting their time to renewing and energizing aspects of neighborhoods in which they serve.

WHAT WE’RE WORKING ON HOUSING AG CROP REPORT

Total value of all agricultural production: $737,297,100 (2016 Crop Report) Top Five Crops By Value: • Grapes, other Fruits and Nut - $730,349,100 • Livestock - $3,378,900 • Floral & Nursery Crops - $2,133,400 • Poultry & Other Animal Products - $660,500 • Field Crops - $480,300 In 1968, the Napa County Board of Supervisors had the forethought to preserve open space and prevent future overdevelopment by creating the nation’s first Agricultural Preserve. This designation has ensured that Napa Valley’s limited resources are preserved for agriculture first and foremost. The Ag Preserve turns 50 in 2018. Vineyard crops make up 9.1 percent of the 504,450 acres in Napa County.

The Worker Proximity Housing program continues to be a success. The program provides down payment assistance in the form of an interest free loan valued at up to 10 percent of the purchase price to low and moderate income households so people can live and work in the Napa County. There is no monthly payment on the loan and the loan is only repaid when the house is sold or refinanced. We recently celebrated the 100th loan. The Napa County agricultural industry forms the backbone of the local economy with migrant farmworkers playing an important

role in creating and sustaining agricultural production. The county owns and manages three housing centers that provide 180 total beds to single men. The centers are funded by a $10 per planted acre assessment of Napa County vineyard owners, a daily occupancy rate of $13 paid by the residents, charitable donations, and incorporated cities. Growing operational costs, however, have created long-term fiscal challenges requiring the county to seek new revenue necessary to continue operations. There is legislation this year that aims to increase the self-assessment up to $15.

Did You Know? GROUNDWATER SUSTAINABILITY

The County Clerk can issue can issue Certificates of Aliveness to people who need to prove they are eligible to collect retirement benefits?

During the past seven years, Napa County has made significant progress toward addressing groundwater quantity and quality for all the people who live and work here, regardless of the source of their water supply. After more than 18 months of development and community engagement, the Board of Supervisors approved a plan for managing groundwater effectively in the Napa Valley basin. The plan, which is being reviewed by the state, includes extensive monitoring, annual reports to the Board, and adaptive planning to allow for changes as needed as additional data is gathered.

28

NAPAVALLEYMARKETPLACE.COM

REGIONAL REPRESENTATION AND ADVOCACY An important responsibility of the county is to represent the interests and priorities of the community at regional and national boards, commissions, or special districts. Some agencies include Metropolitan Transportation Commission (administers billions of state and federal dollars for transportation in the Bay Area), Association of Bay Area Governments, Marin Clean Energy, North Bay/North Coast Broadband Consortium, and San

MAY 2017

Francisco Air Quality Management District, among 37 others. The roles and functions of these entities primarily relate to planning for future development and the associated service needs (e.g., water, sewer) and impacts (e.g., air quality, airport safety). The board also holds leadership positions at the National Association of Counties (NACo) and California State Association of Counties (CSAC).

WHAT WE’RE WORKING ON ROADS

POPP

Measure T, the Napa Countywide Road Maintenance Act, is a half-cent sales tax that takes effect in July 2018 for road maintenance (specifically pavement preservation work) when the current flood protection sales tax sunsets. This represents no increase to the local sales tax rate. Measure T is currently forecast to generate about $19 million per year. The unincorporated area’s share will be roughly $7.5 million. Measure T funding alone will not be enough to address the current and future pavement preservation needs of the county road system. Recently, the state legislature passed SB 1 which could bring up to $37 million in increased road funding over 10 years to the county. The county’s annual allocation of funds to improve roads has grown by over $2 million in the past few years, and a total of $3.7 million is planned for next fiscal year alone.

Measure T revenue, the county’s general fund dollars, and SB 1 funds will combine to make a significant, positive impact on the quality of local roads. Napa County Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining about 450 miles of roads, 6,500 road and street signs, 62 stone arch bridges, and 4,000 culverts. Over the past 3 years, the Board of Supervisors has allocated over $8 million in additional dollars to road maintenance.

The Sheriff’s Office Problem Oriented Policing Program (POPP) takes a proactive approach to solving crime. Traditionally, law enforcement departments have been reactive to problems within the communities they serve. This means that a citizen would report a problem and an officer would respond, usually dealing only with that particular incident. While this method is effective, it can at times fail to address root issues or causes, which, may result in repeated responses to the same location or similar types of calls. The Napa County Sheriff’s Office POPP takes the traditional law enforcement role further, by training select officers to assess problem areas, engage the public, community leaders and business organizations, as well as alternative government services in finding long term solutions that foster community ownership and pride.

HHSA

Did You Know? In the past five years, the county has awarded more than $5 million in funding through competitive grant processes for non-profit organizations to provide programming and health related services?

Napa County’s Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) moved to its new South Campus location at 2751 Napa Valley Corporate Dr., in Napa, to consolidate services. Programs and resources offered here include Public Health, Mental Health, Self Sufficiency, Child Welfare Services, and Alcohol and Drug Services. The new location increases opportunities for collaborative services and creates an efficient environment for clients. HHSA is a partner in the Live Healthy Napa County (LHNC) public-private collaborative, which brings together representatives from health and healthcare organizations, business, public safety, education, government, and the community to build strategies for a shared vision of a healthier Napa County. LHNC aims to increase health and quality of life by moving away from a focus exclusively on sickness and disease to one based on prevention and wellness.

MAY 2017

PERMIT CENTER

Planning, Building and Environmental Services (PBES) launched the Online Permit Center (http://www.countyofnapa. org/Permit/) in December, which offers an online option for those seeking building and environmental health permits. The free online portal provides registered users with expanded search options and the ability to view additional information related to permits and applications within PBES and Public Works. There is no additional charge to use the system, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

right colors, smiles, laughter and shelves full of toys can be observed when walking into the Community Resources for Children’s Toy Library & Early Learning Center (CRC, TLELC). CRC has existed for over 38 years along with the toy library; but in its history has never been this large. The TLELC had humble beginnings as a shelf in a small office and has grown into an 815 sq. ft. space, located at 3299 Claremont Way, Suite 1, across from Kaiser’s Medical Offices.

MAY 2017

Free Toy Library The library offers more than 1,000 toys for children 0 to 5 years of age. The space also functions as a classroom with areas of play: the reading nook, a collaborative table, arts and crafts station and the dramatic play center. “We don’t own any commercial or battery operated toys, the toys don’t talk. We want the children to bring the narrative to the toy,” said Debora J. Ferrero-Waite, Manager of Early Learning Programs and Special Projects.

“We need people to know we are so much more than a toy library. We are seeking the community’s input and giving a prize to the best name...” ~ Debora J. Ferrero-Waite

Toys are organized into four categories: Language & Pre-Literacy Communication, Movement and Physical Development, Thinking Skills and Social & Emotional Development. “Our toys are selected with an eye for durability, practicality, developmental appropriateness and long-term usefulness,” the website states. Toys are loaned out for up to one month, to any Napa County resident. Parents are encouraged and welcome to stop in to check them out. “‘How is my child doing?’ is the most common question we’re asked and upon request we can give an Ages & Stages Questionnaire. This is a confidential screening tool for parents to fill out and view a snapshot of where their child is excelling and which areas could use more support,” said Ferrero-Waite. The results of this test become the map to the library’s shelves to choose the best toys to nourish learning development. ActiveMinds at CRC

Free Infant & Pre-School Programs The Active Minds Program is a free preschool-like experience with a two-month commitment on weekday mornings, for children 2 to 3 years of age. “Parents and children actively engage together in classroom activities. Younger siblings are welcome to participate,” said FerreroWaite. These activities model specific strategies based on curriculum to optimize children’s play. Currently, one class can accommodate up to 10 children and there is a waitlist of 35 families! In addition to offering the Active Minds class, CRC is offering a new program, Early Learning Activities (ELA) for children 0-5 years of age. It is organized in seven-week segments and held twice a week. Each week is focused on a theme designed to support children’s development. According to the website, this new program gives parents

and child-care providers with variable schedules the possibility to engage with their children in hands-on learning experiences and provides ideas and techniques to extend learning through play at home. Community members such as officers from the Napa Sherriff ’s department and community organizations like Connolly Ranch are recruited to the ELA program to share their expertise in career, art, music, science, math, and movement to create authentic and engaging classes.

Rename the TLELC and Win! Encompassing such a broad spectrum of learning sessions and toys, the TLELC is now in search of a new name, something more approachable that better defines what the organization provides. “We need people to know we are so much more than a toy library. We are seeking the community’s input and giving a prize to the best name. Any suggestions can be made by visiting our website under the ‘get involved’ tab,” said FerreroWaite with a smile. ANNIVERSARY

Twenty years ago we published the first issue of Napa Valley Marketplace Magazine. Our mission is commitment to community - highlighting the amazing people, history, organizations and businesses that make living and working here so special. We started with the idea of a community-wide publication. We gathered a few focus groups and asked what they would like to see in the magazine. First, were the advertisers. They wanted everyone to see their messages and reach all of the locals. Readers wanted to see themselves, their friends and neighbors, kids and pets! Now, we direct-mail to nearly 44,000 local homes and businesses, from American Canyon through St. Helena, every single month.

Marketplace is proud to be the sponsor of many events and organizations: Lucky Penny Productions | Connolly Ranch | Queen of the Valley Foundation | Leadership Napa Valley Napa County Hispanic Network | Kiwanis Club of Napa | Downtown Napa Association and many more!

We assist our nonprofits to increase fundraising efforts and awareness of the incredible services they provide. Marketplace is pleased to be an intricate part of the community of the Napa Valley. We thank you, our readers, our advertisers and all of our partners.

Napa County’s Love for Animals, Sustained through Jameson Rescue Ranch

f you think that the Napa Valley is only all about food and wine, think again! Napa County is also a region, and community, filled with animal lovers. As a reflection of this love for animals, Jameson Animal Rescue Ranch (JARR), a 501c3 non-profit based in Napa, was founded in June 2014 by Monica and David Stevens of 750 Wines. JARR is a no-kill rescue and sanctuary for companion

for wines and meet David Stevens, the love of her life, did the dream turn to reality. Named after the couple’s rescued Great Pyrenees dog, Jameson, who died at the age of 14, the rescue organization has gone from strength to stronger.

JARR fulfilled a lifelong dream of Monica Stevens. It wasn’t until she moved from Chicago to the Napa Valley, to pursue her passion

“I often reflect on the early days of JARR. Little did I realize the incredible need for our programs, services and compassion,“ said

MAY 2017

Co-founder, Monica Stevens, “I am deeply grateful that JARR is able to provide for so many.” In January, JARR opened a cat adoption “lounge” in Napa called, Ella’s CatHouse & Catnip Bar. The ribbon cutting ceremony was officiated by Napa Mayor Jill Techel, and Napa County Board of Supervisors members Alfredo Pedroza, and Diane Dillon. Staffed by an exceptional, small army of dedicated volunteers, the adoption lounge has been incredibly successful adopting out 20 cats in two months to loving homes. Located at 1009 Caymus Street in downtown Napa, open four days per week Friday through Monday, guests are invited to visit Ella’s not only if they are looking for a feline friend to adopt, but to get a kitty fix, hang out and spend some time reading, or just being with the cats. “We are moved by the number of repeat visitors and their desire to

spend quiet time with the kitties,“ said Stevens.

The majority of the other companion and farmed animals JARR has rescued are in foster homes, as the organization is still looking for 30+ acres of property on which to build their state-of-the-art rescue and sanctuary. The sanctuary, designed by St. Helena-based, award-winning architect, Howard Backen, will feature a hospital and visitor center, dog and cat adoption houses, and provide sanctuary for abused horses and farmed animals. The property will also serve as an educational and resource center for JARR’s emerging program about the plight of factory farmed animals. There will also be a café on site, serving plant-based food. “We are actively searching for the perfect home for our rescue and sanctuary in Napa County,” said Stevens, “If anyone in the community knows of suitable

As part of the JARR mission to be a friend to all animals, the organization has recently been involved in rescuing two adorable pigs. Earlier this year a video of their rescued pig Lucy became a hit with the media, featured in People.com, World Animal News and Global Animal. Freedom, another rescued pig who having escaped a close call at the slaughterhouse, was found wandering down the street in Petaluma, has since become the JARR Ambassador Animal. JARR doesn’t stop at rescuing animals. As part of their commitment to the community, the organization works hand in hand with Napa County Meals on Wheels to deliver food and help care for the pets of elders who receive meals through the program. To date, they have 50 seniors and 65 pets

who receive visits from volunteers, who deliver pet food and ensure any pets in need receive flea medication, grooming, and medical attention.

JARR’s mission - in addition to ending hunger and animal cruelty - is laser-focused on ending overpopulation. Last year, JARR funded 700+ spay/neuters for pets in Napa, Solano and Lake counties. In addition to offering year-round free spay/neuter vouchers to lowincome families, JARR holds free vaccination and microchip clinics where they also distribute spay/ neuter vouchers.

The struggling economy hits home hardest when families do not have enough funds to cover caring for their pet. JARR’s emergency fund has been vital in assisting people in need with animals in the Napa County area, metering out funds for medical expenditures and helping find homes for animals whose humans can no longer take care of them for various reasons. They have also assisted in helping people pay the landlord pet deposit amounts required to keep pets in homes, as part of their work to keep animals with their people and out of the city shelter.

fundraiser. In fact, all of JARR’s work is funded solely by donations. Their yearly fundraising effort star event, held at Gamble Family Vineyards, is called, WineaPAWlooza. The wine auction has been listed as one of the top ten wine auctions in the U.S and is populated by worldclass vintners and wine connoisseurs alike.

A clinic held in American Canyon in February saw a record turnout, with people lining up before they had opened. The volunteer veterinary staff from Silverado Veterinary Clinic and JARR staff took care of more than 400 animals that day. These clinics can cost up to $30,000, and they are funded by JARR’s annual

THE BEAUTY AND MYSTERY OF

Feng Shui By Cherie Knox

F

eng Shui is an ancient Chinese art that enhances the life force of a given space—known as “chi.” It is spiritual energy, if you will. The intention is to create a balanced environment that supports the health, wealth and happiness of a space.

There are five vital components of Feng Shui: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. These elements correspond with certain colors, according to the influential areas of energy as represented on the Bagau map. Color is very important, and choice of color—right or wrong—impacts how a person responds to a space.

Feng Shui, which dates back 3,500 years, is strongly influenced by the Tao. According to the Oxford Wikipedia online encyclopedia cites, “There is no Dictionary, the Tao is “the absolute principle underlying replicable scientific evidence that Feng Shui’s mystical the universe, combining within itself the claims are real, and it is considered by the principles of yin and yang and signifying the scientific community to be pseudoscience.” “Every aspect way, or code of behavior, that is in harmony Reading that made me think of scientist of your life is with the natural order of things.” and environmentalist David Suzuki’s documentary series Sacred Balance. These two forces create the essence of life that surrounds us. One cannot exist without the other, as they deeply support and nourish one another. They cannot exist in isolation; they serve to define each other. Therefore, a Feng Shui home shares a harmonious expression of both the yin and the yang. Former Napa resident and Feng Shui consultant of 20 years, Kim Klein of KimKleinHealthCoach.com, says that she sees a direct correlation between an individual’s health and well-being, and that essence being reflected in their home. Kim said there are five factors that influence our lives: Fate, Luck, Feng Shui of our lives, Karma and Education, “We really have no control over fate or luck, so why not start with the Feng Shui of our life, where we do have influence?”

The internet is ripe with testimonials of people who have applied Feng Shui to their homes, and claimed benefits such as better sleep, improved relationships and increased wealth. Some have simply stated that they feel more peace and joy in their homes. I have a vivid memory as a teenager, of walking into a beautiful store in Newport Beach. Its exclusive display of Asian art and furnishings were beautifully arranged. The space was simply captivating, calming and inspiring. After meandering through a second time, I walked up to the shopkeeper and told her how beautiful I found her store. My passionate, exuberant 15-year-old self exclaimed, “If only everyone could live in such beautiful spaces, there would be peace the world over!” She smiled, bowed ever so slightly and said two words to me: Feng Shui.

A few quick steps to Feng Shui Your Home… 1) Clear away the clutter. A cluttered home blocks the flow of good energy and the clutter itself stores negative energy. So tidy up! Get rid of old, unused or unwanted items. 2) Choose the right paint colors for your kitchen and living areas. The right colors benefit all family members who use these areas. 2017 is the year of Fire so hues of red and orange in these areas are energetically inviting. 3) Ensure that your front door is inviting and the pathway leading to it is free of obstacles, creating a good flow and clear pathway. Consider placing a piece of art or a water element in this area that represents wealth.

augh Lounge 45, a joint anniversary fundraising event for both Cope Family Center and Aldea Children & Family Services that will feature comedian and actor Mike Birbiglia, is set to premiere at the Napa Valley Performing Arts Center at the Lincoln Theater on Saturday, May 13, 2017. Cope Family Center and Aldea Children & Family Services have partnered for 45 years to provide essential parenting, family support and mental health services for thousands of Napa Valley families. In the spirit of their long-shared history of collaboration, and to co-celebrate four and one-half decades, these two critical Napa Valley nonprofits have created a joint 45th anniversary fundraising celebration. The star of Laugh Lounge 45, comedian, writer, actor, and director Mike Birbiglia, is known for his highly personal approach to comedy. Birbiglia burst onto the scene in 2006 with his critically acclaimed debut, Two

Drink Mike on Comedy Central Records, followed by My Secret Public Journal Live, Sleepwalk With Me Live and My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend. He toured his most recent show, Thank God for Jokes, to more than 100 cities, and filmed it for Netflix. Birbiglia can also be seen as Danny Pearson in Orange is the New Black, as well as in Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck, The Fault in Our Stars, and in his own films, Sleepwalk With Me and Don’t Think Twice. “Forty-five years of quality service to Napa’s children and families is an accomplishment we want to share with the Napa Valley and beyond. Laugh Lounge 45 is different than anything either agency has attempted in our 45 years. We envision it as a celebration of our community, filled with fun and laughter, highlighting the best of both organizations,” said Joelle Gallagher, Cope Family Center Executive Director. “We also wanted to be sensitive about resources and sharing the costs of putting on such an event

Aldea and Cope to Benefit from Gala Comedy Night Fundraiser with Mike Birbiglia with another high-quality, family- and child-focused organization like Cope Family Center. It seemed like the obvious thing to do,” added Mark Bontrager, Aldea Children & Family Center Executive Director. Both Napa-based nonprofit organizations were established in 1972 to address the growing need for child abuse prevention and mental health services in the Napa Valley, and they continue to work together to better support the needs of the community, now assisting more than 10,000 local families every year. Cope and Aldea provide families with the opportunity to provide their children with a loving, safe home. Cope’s services focus primarily on prevention programs and community advocacy, while Aldea’s intervention services engage families that are in need of more intensive support. A forty-fifth anniversary is a milestone for both Aldea and Cope, demonstrating a commitment to the community and ensuring service for the long-term. Such longevity would be impossible without the amazing donors, volunteers and advocates who have supported both non-profit over the years.

With over 20 different partnerships with local businesses and dozens of dedicated volunteers, it’s amazing to see our community come together to support children and families through our programs.” Mike Birbiglia is a one-of-a-kind storyteller, yet while his jokes can require a mature perspective he does not use the level of profanity that has become commonplace in modern stand-up comedy. His show is recommended for attendees ages 16 and up. For more information about, and to purchase tickets for, Laugh Lounge 45 visit TinyUrl.com/NapaBirbigs or go to LincolnTheater.com.
