HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR MEDICARE BENEFITS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE “WELCOME TO MEDICARE” PREVENTIVE VISIT
Your “Welcome to Medicare” check-up can be done within the first 12 months of your Medicare enrollment. This is a great opportunity to review your health history and establish a plan of care with your doctor. During this visit, your doctor will provide education on the various preventive services that are available to you which includes information on vaccines, shots and counseling services. If needed, your doctor will refer you to the necessary specialists. While every Medicare beneficiary should take advantage of this, it is especially important for those who have not recently seen a doctor.
MAKE USE OF YOUR ANNUAL “WELLNESS” VISIT
As a Medicare beneficiary, you are entitled to visit your doctor annually to review your plan of care at no additional cost. During this visit, you will complete a Health Risk Assessment which will be used by your doctor to adjust your plan of care as needed. Your doctor may order additional tests or provide a referral depending on the circumstance. Keep in mind that these additional services are not covered under your Wellness visit. Instead, this portion will be billed to Part B of Medicare.
DOWNLOAD THE “WHAT’S COVERED” APP
Are you wondering if a particular service is covered by Medicare? Download the What’s Covered app and simply type in the service you are looking for. While the app is not perfect, it provides a quick and easy way to see if your medical needs will be covered by Medicare.
MANY COUNSELING AND PREVENTATIVE SERVICES ARE FREE
Medicare provides many counseling and preventative services such as tobacco disease prevention, diabetes prevention and alcohol misuse counseling (just to name a few). This is a great way to address problems now before they become too big of a problem in the future. The best part is, these services are at no additional cost to you as long as your doctor accepts Medicare Assignment.
PROTECT YOURSELF FROM WHAT MEDICARE DOESN’T COVER
Medicare is a great benefit, but it doesn’t cover anything. There is co-insurance, copays and deductibles that could significantly impact you financially. If you qualify, a Medicare Supplement and Drug plan can greatly reduce your financial risks with respect to your healthcare costs. Once approved for a Medicare Supplement, you are guaranteed to have that plan for the rest of your life (as long as you are current on your supplement premium) without respect to your health status.
We specialize in Medicare planning. Give us a call today at 707-690-1965 to schedule a complimentary consultation.

The Supportive Parent Action Network (SPAN) program is part of Beyond Ability Inc., a non-profit within the All About Ability program. The All About Ability Program serves Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties and provides Independent Living Skills and Support services to young adults who are diagnosed with mild to moderate Autism Spectrum and Developmental Disorders. The Napa SPAN group meets on the Second Saturday of each month for discussion, support and collaboration on meaningful and complex topics that are specific to the challenges of adult children with developmental disabilities. Topics of special interest have included Housing, Special Needs Trusts, ABLE Accounts, Vocational Services, Supplemental Security Income and Community Resources. A sampling of other topics that have been explored include Learned Helplessness, Social Skills Training, Self-Care for Parents, Building Community, Emergency Preparedness, Empowering Ability topics, Mental Health and Covid19, Medication Management, and Vacation Blues. In addition to the monthly Parent Support Group meetings, the families also meet on the last Sunday of each month at Fuller Park for picnics and recreational activities. This activity has been a great way for the families to informally socialize, build cohesion and create community.
The Parent Support Group keeps in close contact throughout each month to share information and resources, provide support or to address concerns. Having a network of parents who understands the challenges and successes of raising a disabled adult child has been a lifeline to many parents in the group. Often parents comment that being part of a supportive group makes them feel less alone and more empowered. For about 6 months, a subset of the parent group formed a Housing Committee and explored intentional housing options in Napa. Unfortunately, the current cost of housing in Napa is a major obstacle in creating such a project at this time. It’s important to note that there are a few successful programs in Napa that have created intentional housing, however, the monthly costs are exorbitant! Although the Housing Committee is currently on “pause”, exploring and researching alternative options continues to be ongoing. The most frequent issue and concern that is raised by parents with disabled adult children is, “Who will be there for my son or daughter, when I am no longer able or I have passed away?” It’s extremely difficult to plan for your adult child’s future when YOU will not be there! As a parent, you try to make a rock solid plan and try to foresee all possible challenges, scenarios and difficulties that may confront your son or daughter in the future. As we all know, you cannot predict the future! Often, parents feel stuck and overwhelmed with such a daunting and heart-wrenching task, mainly because there are so few options and the options that do exist are legally complicated, emotionally laden and very expensive.

Everyone needs a place to call their own, make lifelong friends and have unforgettable experiences
Creating a new generation of leaders for advocacy
In order to have some “peace of mind”, it’s important for parents to give themselves credit and recognize that they are doing everything possible, with the resources at hand, to create the best future for their son/daughter.
Giving our community the power to handle anxiety, depression and feel great!
The Supportive Parent Action Network is here to support you, explore creative options, provide resources and TOGETHER build and create a safe and healthy community of love and support for our amazing adult children! Our Parent Support group is open to everyone, whether your adult son/daughter participates in the All About Ability program or not. We meet on the second Saturday of each month from 10:00-11:30 at the All About Ability office, 743 Wilson St. Napa. If you have any questions, please contact Sacia Novak, LCSW at 707-815-3249 (phone or text).

Blues, bRews & bB Q SATURDAY,
FIRST STREET NAPA
Downtown has never looked so good. Stores are full, outdoor dining is plentiful – even the hanging flower baskets are in full bloom. Could it get any better?
Yes! Saturday, October 2nd, Blues, Brews & BBQ makes it’s return to First Street in downtown. This would be the 12th annual event, except of course that last year’s was cancelled (thank you, COVID.) From the beginning, it’s been the most popular of all the outdoor events hosted by the Downtown Napa
Association. Julie Morales, who has been organizing BB&BBQ from the beginning, thinks the changes to downtown will make it even better. “We used to host the Beer Garden on Coombs Street, which is now full of beautiful parklets. That forced us to look for another location. We never considered the area next to the County Building, behind the Second Street garage, and it’s completely shaded. It’s perfect!” said Morales. The Garden features forty draft beers. Purchase a tasting glass with tickets and sample any four beers (or more, if you wish to purchase
additional tickets.) It’s also across the street from the Main Stage at Dwight Murray Plaza, opening with Nancy Wright and the Rhythm Roots Band and headlined this year by The Daniel Castro Band. “It’s going to be a party, for sure,” said Morales. Individual beer, wine and other beverages will be available for purchase at numerous places. Look for Coors Light, Blue Moon, Saint Archer Hop Valley and Lagunitas. As long as she was making changes, Morales decided that, if three continuous musical stages are good, four are even better. “People should
MAIN STAGE @ DWIGHT MURRAY PLAZA
be able to dance, no matter where they are on the street.” In addition to Dwight Murray Plaza, two local bands, The Smart Fellers and The Johnny Smith Trio, will perform in front of the Goodman Library. Just down the street at the Eiko’s Stage, Tia Carroll & Frankie G Acoustic Band will open, warming up the crowd for Marshall Law Band. And that’s just the Blues. A full-on Zydeco party will take place on Randolph Street, starting with I*ko YaYa and closing with Andre Thierry and His Accordion
Soul Music. The word Zydeco gets its name from a colloquial Creole French expression “Les haricots ne sont pas salés” meaning “the snap beans aren’t salty” or idiomatically for “the times are hard.” Like the blues, early zydeco offered a way for the rural poor both to express and to escape the hardships of life through music and dance. What great music to dance our way out of a pandemic. If you’ve missed past BB&BBQ events, the title says it all. Eight BBQ vendors will offer chicken, ribs, hot links, oysters and all

the trimmings. Remember – the only way to get through the day is to pace yourself. For that matter, you could always take some home. Not interested in beer or BBQ? Then just come on down and enjoy the music. There will be plenty of Napa Valley wine and other beverages on-hand as well. Want to bicycle? Valet bike parking will be on Coombs. Like all Downtown Napa events, admission is free. For your safety, proof of vaccine or a recent negative COVID test are required. This event would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, including the downtown property owners through their Property-based Improvement District. They recognize that, after all we’ve been through, it’s time to get outside and have fun. Other support comes from Molson Export Ale, Coors, Lagunitas and St. Archer. Without them, there would be no event.

to Foster Kids By Kathleen Reynolds
Did you know that every month—right here in Napa County—10 to 15 children, newborn to 17 years old, enter the foster care system? Not only that, but half of these children are placed outside of our county, removed from their school, community and everything familiar because Napa does not have enough foster homes available. Imagine yourself as a child, standing in an unfamiliar place, being handed a paper bag (or worse, a garbage bag) with the just the essentials to get through the night. Peggy and Tom Smith know that scenario all too well. When they signed up to be foster parents, they learned firsthand how few belongings the children brought with them. “We saw a lot of need; more than once, we were awakened during the night with a call that an infant was on the way to us,” says Peggy. “My husband had many late-night runs to 7-11 to buy diapers. We started putting together backpacks for foster kids in our garage. We filled the packs with comfort things; a pillow, blanket, nightlight.” The garage became overstuffed, and Peggy and Tom were being run ragged between their full-time jobs and organizing supplies for foster families. “We saw the demand for helping foster families, not only with materials but also with moral support,” says Peggy. “We started
us. We help the teens at Voices with clothing and shoes for job interviews. We’re available to any open cases in the Child Welfare system. We can assist with reunification of families and can provide furniture to set the child up. Family preservation is very important.”
Peggy and Tom Smith of Expressions of Hope
a 501c3 nonprofit, Expressions of Hope, that houses various supplies and holds monthly meetings for foster parents. We mentor, discuss challenges and issues; sometimes a social worker or other professional will join us too.” They also host informal gatherings such as Dads and Donuts, with foster fathers gathering monthly. Expressions of Hope offers respite nights for foster parents with childcare, including crafts and activities for the kids. This year, they’ve planned a fall barbeque in the parking lot for families and children to reconnect. She says they were lucky to find a home for the organization at Napa Valley Life Church on Trower Avenue in Napa. “We needed a place to store clothes and we’re very grateful to have this space,” Peggy continues. “The building is attached to the church, and they let
us have a whole room, they built walls and areas for the clothing. There’s a separate room for trainings and support. My dream some day is to have a small café with coffee so that foster moms have a quiet place to meet, speak to social workers or for the social workers to be able to plug in their computers to work between appointments.” “Our ultimate dream is to go mobile and serve outlying areas for foster families in Angwin and Calistoga. If we had a van, we could load it up with clothes and shoes for the families and drive to their communities.” Expressions of Hope works with other organizations in Napa County. “We partner with Lilliput (an organization that finds permanent adoptive homes for foster youth); we send parents to them, and they send families to
What’s been her biggest surprise in her years of foster care? “Developing relationships with birth parents has been meaningful and important. It’s been helpful working as a team with the goal to get the child back home. If they’re open to it, we stay in touch. We want the child to know they don’t have to pick between their birth or foster parents. We give them the knowledge that they have permission to stay in our lives.” It’s hard when they leave; you love them so much.” The average stay for foster children in a home is 6 months to 12 or 18 months, depending on their age. What can you do to help? There’s a List of Needs section on their website expressionsofhopenapa. org that takes you directly to the Amazon website where donors can pick items as small as hairbrushes and baby bottles for $11.99 to larger items like car seats that will be shipped
Foster children’s lives have turned upside down and they need a safe and loving home to allow them to regain some sense of normalcy. Are you interested in opening your heart and home? • Expressions of Hope offers quarterly trainings • You do not need to be married or own your home • A monthly stipend is provided • There is an urgent need for sibling sets, teens and children with special needs Not everyone can be a foster parent, but Expressions of Hope has many opportunities to serve children in foster care: • • • • • • •

“I realized she’d directly to Expressions of Hope. They also have a Foster Kids Fund that is used to pay for things like soccer or other sports, music or art lessons, camp, or anything that helps normalize the experience in foster care. “Of course, we’re always recruiting,” says Peggy. “We have regular informational orientations for families who might be interested in fostering. It’s sad that we don’t have enough families locally and the children must be sent to Stockton, Modesto or Santa Rosa. Siblings are split up. It’s time consuming for the social workers, too, to travel between out-oftown locations to visit the foster children.” Various groups in the area have helped with donation drives. Mark Richmond, founding member of the business group Business to Business (B2B) says his group likes to help in the community. They recently collected and donated 142 backpacks filled with school supplies for charities including Expressions of Hope.
Building on our founding companies combined 70 years servicing, innovating and leading the wine industry.

gotten her dream. She had a family.” “We look for places with the greatest need,” says Mark. “When a child is instantly placed into Child Protective Services, it’s an important time to help. People realize that because this year we received double the donations as last year.” Peggy explains there are many other ways that the public can help foster kids. “Perhaps you can offer a service, such as haircutting,” she says. “I think foster care scares potential donors. Foster care isn’t scary.”
“We took in a 14-year-old girl; this was her seventh foster home,” Peggy says. “It was at least six months before she trusted us. We ended up adopting her and had her for 10 great years. Sadly, she succumbed to (the autoimmune disease) lupus. I consider it a success story because all she wanted was a family. That was her dream. When she passed away, I realized she’d gotten her dream. She had a family.”
Foster parents have seen many success stories in every age group. Peggy herself experienced one of them. She and her husband have cared for over 80 children in the last 22 years.

The moment someone “walks inside The Studio,

- Katie Hamilton Shaffer
F E E L AT H O M E AT N A PA’ S
By Lisa Adams Walter
Move over Food Network, MTV and HGTV, a wine country brand and now streaming network has emerged in downtown Napa, and anyone can stop in to explore the multi-faceted platform, showroom, event venue, club, food products, cooking demos, music, wines and lifestyle of Feast it Forward at The Studio by Feast it Forward in the Oxbow District. While there are hundreds of destinations and wineries within the Napa Valley, there is only one space and place like The Studio by Feast it Forward. It is not surprising, then, that Katie Hamilton Shaffer, Feast’s Founder and President, a visionary, creator and dreamer, is also one of a kind. On a recent, spontaneous visit to The Studio, Shaffer was about to welcome a VIP group for a private event, yet made time to show us around. Bursting with imagination, a fast pace, intense focus, and the ability to simultaneously converse with staff members, assist with guest requests, welcome a resident vintner and store a cake for a private celebration, we toured the entire place with a refreshing sip of Vitus Napa Valley Rosé of Merlot from Layne Family Wines in hand, as she answered my questions along the way. Immediately we felt right at home. So, what is it? What is happening at “Feast?” While Feast it Forward is the primary brand, The Studio is the charming white building on McKinstry Street that was formerly a dilapidated, close-to-demolition house, that Shaffer has strikingly transformed.
What can a first-time visitor expect? “The moment someone walks inside The Studio, regardless of their age, they are struck by how comfortable and at home they feel,” said Shaffer, “They are literally surrounded by the lifestyle.” All of the brands, or “sponsors” of The Studio, range from local small businesses, to boutique vintners to global companies and big brands. Resulting in a very cool place to hang out, explore, converse with others, meet a vintner, listen to music, witness a live cooking demo or concert, or sip some wine! As a visitor, if you like a piece of furniture, or the color of the paint on the wall, a piece of artwork, the picnic tables outside, or an instrument such as a tricked-out Gibson guitar, you can simply interact with a large format touch-screen monitor (think living room flat screen TV) swipe through, explore a virtual tour of the space and tap on an item that piques your interest for more information (including pricing, and how to purchase). Instantly this is all available at your fingertips. The design, look, feel, products, colors and artwork within the experiential space of The Studio; curated, designed and installed by Shaffer, change completely, twice per year. With that goal of making The Studio feel like a home, products are displayed in a showroom setting. Similarly, the 15 vintners whose wines are available for purchase and poured on site, have access to the space to meet new consumers, as well as existing club members and guests. September 2021
“Boutique vintners are looking for a space to share their wines,” Shaffer explained, “90% of the purchase is the experience, and we make people feel comfortable while introducing them to premier boutique vintners.” Upstairs at The Studio, is where the Feast it Forward streaming network (Feast. Network) studio for filming live cooking events and culinary programming resides. Guest have included celebrities from the worlds of food, sports and entertainment such as Jaques Pépin, Kevin Bacon, Charles Woodson and Brian Boitano. Shows, recipes and more are available at the network online, which also features Shaffer’s own programs, at Feast Network. Adjacent to the upstairs film studio kitchen, is an expansive balcony that overlooks the Oxbow Commons. During the Oxbow River Stage concerts, VIP seats and experiences at The Studio provide an unparalleled experience and view of worldclass entertainers that this month will include Jackson Browne, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Death Cab For Cutie, Gary Clark Jr., John Fogerty, Herbie Hancock and Van Morrison. Soon to come to The Studio, is The Yard at Feast it Forward, an outdoor area behind the building that expands into an L shape. More than a simple outdoor space, The Yard is a new outdoor entertainment venue, future beer garden and festival space, boasting the installation of a doubledeck private lounge space constructed of shipping containers. Two stages anchor the site, which is now Napa’s first year-round festival venue. No popping up and tearing down, get your music fest fix all year at The Yard. Born and raised not far away, in Davis, California, Shaffer grew up in a small town agricultural setting, with that solid sense of community that those of us in Napa understand. Her upbringing instilled in her, a drive to give back. A founder of past foundations, Shaffer has made philanthropy a key element of every Feast it 32
Forward initiative. “If there is a non-profit that benefits women, children, animals, health or international causes, we have open arms.” Feast has supported local causes ranging from a lemonade stand that a young philanthropist set up in front of The Studio, to the Boys and Girls Clubs, Soroptimist and Napa Humane. A lot going on? Yeah. Could just anyone do this? Doubt it. Shaffer is a woman gifted with focus, drive, passion, kindness and a motivation to make a difference and give back. After attending San Diego State University on sports scholarship (ultimately earning her advanced degree in Art and Art History), her life experiences
brands to activate. Her five-year plan includes creating similar Feast it Forward locations and studios customized to jive with the lifestyle of each region in hip cities such as Austin, Texas and Nashville, Tennessee. “I am somebody that brings people and experiences together. I am creative. I don’t like calling myself a visionary, I think out of the box. I am creating a lifestyle and experience, I am taking a stab at bringing communities and global brands together for the good, and there is no other space that I know of, that does what we do.”

included playing on a semi-pro soccer team and pursuing a vocal music career in Nashville. “I wanted to go to culinary school, but they didn’t have a sports team,” Shaffer joked, instead heading south to play soccer in San Diego. Following those early vast and varied life experiences, she made the decision to move to the Napa Valley nearly 18 years ago, to fulfill her absolute passion for food and wine, and create the dream career of her own, also becoming a wife and mother. “A lot of people have hobbies but can’t turn them into a career,” Shaffer noted, adding that Feast is now both a marketing engine as well as a global platform for

Napa Valley “When you’re selling to people who live in the same town as you, you have to be an expert offering quality merchandise.” - Kent Gardella
Kent Gardella opened Napa Valley Jewelers twenty-nine years ago, making him the longest operating business owner in downtown Napa. There are lots of factors contributing to the store’s success and longevity, and it all starts with the fact that Napa is Gardella’s home. He raised his family here, has been deeply involved in community nonprofits here, and has become a trusted voice to two generations of Napa customers. “I’ve sold jewelry to folks, watched their kids grow up, and then sold wedding rings to them,” he said. “It’s extremely gratifying to be part of people’s lives like that.” Gardella moved the shop in 2018, opening at 1300 First Street, Suite 365 in the First Street corridor, next to Eiko’s. The new location is open, airy and beautiful. Upon reopening, Gardella added glass art to their product mix. “Jewelry is art you wear, and this is art for the home. I’ve always loved glass
art, and when we found the right artists, adding it to our mix was a no-brainer.” Foot traffic is way up, because First Street Napa is fairly busting with new and exciting stores. “Twelve stores have opened as our neighbors in just the last year.” Through the ups and downs, Napa Valley Jewelers has always offered first class service. “When you’re selling to people who live in the same town as you, you have to be an expert offering quality merchandise. We don’t pressure anybody. It’s not in our nature, and we’ve also worked hard to establish a reputation of being a comfortable place to shop.” Gardella sees that trust in action all the time. He recounts a family that came in on the advice of their friends, themselves twenty-year customers. “It was mom, dad and their soon-to-be married son. The parents helped their son pick out an engagement ring. Later, his fiancée came
in to look at it, put her hands to her face and said, ‘That’s it!’ She was so happy with the ring, I thought she was going to cry. That’s why we do this.” Over the years, Gardella has established relationships with many jewelry designers, which allows him to curate an inventory that ranges from classic to contemporary. He’s seen a lot of changes come and go, and pays attention to what’s happening in the market. “When Princess Diana got married and wanted a sapphire surrounded with diamonds, that’s what everybody wanted. Now, with social media, there are so many influencers out there that demand for a particular style changes all the time.”
Regardless of style, Gardella prefers to stick with real stones, especially diamonds, and gold and silver. That’s the case with lab grown diamonds, which came on the scene four or five years ago. Gardella will sell them, but he doesn’t carry them. “They are less expensive than diamonds but start losing value as soon as you buy them.” After college graduation, Gardella enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Vietnam. There, he worked with drug addicted soldiers, guiding them to rehab programs. After coming home, he became a drug and alcohol counselor, which he did for three years. “It was rewarding work, but it’s really tough, and I burned out. The bank I’d worked for
in high school offered me a job, so I went back there.” He relocated to Las Vegas from his home in Reno, and discovered yogurt shops. “I loved the stuff, and the people selling it were making a killing.” He got out of banking, returned to Reno, and opened his own yogurt shop. He laughed as he talked about that: “I didn’t think about it being so much colder in Reno than Las Vegas. Yogurt didn’t do as well there.” He sold the yogurt shop, switched gears and went to work in the jewelry business, eventually opening a store in Santa Clara. The mall in which his store was located sold to new owners who didn’t renew a number of leases – including his. Gardella found a store for sale in Napa. He and his wife Terri didn’t know anyone here,

Have You Questions About
but she liked the town. “So, we took all my inventory and moved it here. We opened in August of ’92.” Gardella’s nonprofit involvement began with joining the Napa Rotary Club. That group was just starting to work with the Pathway Home at the Vets Center in Yountville, and he immersed himself in the program. “We used to do a bowling night with the guys once a week. That expanded into hiking, filed trips and more.” Gardella partnered with a quilt store and arranged for all the vets in the program to get personalized quilts. Napa Valley Jewelers started a Mother’s Day program, so that everyone’s wife and mother got a gift. He is proud to be part of the Rotary team that sponsors the Cycle for Sight bicycle event. Gardella was also heavily involved with If Given A Chance, serving as president of that board for three terms. “We found and became mentors for the kids, a lot of whom were on probation or just living in bad circumstances. Many of them wouldn’t have finished high school, but some are now lawyers, doctors, police officers and more.” Gardella also served two terms as president of the Downtown Napa Association board. When he looks into his crystal ball, Gardella is certain that, even with the internet, there will be a place for brick-and-mortar retailers, “especially clothing and jewelry. People want to try things on to see how they look, and get knowledgeable feedback. With jewelry, people want a place to go to for cleaning and maintenance. You can’t get that online.” Napa Valley Jeweler is open Monday through Saturday. Stop in, even if just to look around.

SEPTEMBER 18-19 & SEPTEMBER 25-26
Every year at the end of September, local art lovers, art collectors and buyers excitedly anticipate the coming of harvest time, and the 28-year tradition of Open Studios in the Napa Valley. It’s a free, self-guided, art discovery tour that takes place over the last two weekends in September (both Saturday and Sunday). This year, 56 participating artists have been preparing to share their artwork with locals and visitors from all over the United States. Whether you’re an avid collector or just curious about art, this is an incredible opportunity to peek into the creative spaces of Napa Valley, meet the artists, watch demonstrations, and buy local art right from the source! This is your chance to own your piece of Napa Valley creativity and display it proudly and lovingly in your home and business. Open Studios Napa Valley is committed to bringing you the best event to date. The artists have had two years to create new works and many other special items that art lovers are sure to enjoy. The program exists today because the artists, many participating for decades, believe in the importance and value of opening their studios to visitors and sharing a unique, artistic experience. Catalogs include information about the participating artists, along with pictures of their work, studio locations, and a location may. Look for a catalog at many local Napa businesses, including the Art Gallery Napa Valley (1307 1st Street), Jessel Gallery (1019 Atlas Peak Road), and Color Theory Art Supplies (3250 California Boulevard). Summer Camp Guitar at Napa School of Music
Four short years ago, Ralf Lindner and his significant other faced a big decision—whether to settle in Germany or the Bay Area. At the same time, Ralf was also looking for a business opportunity. He had been a traveling a lot and was enticed by the desire to be home each evening. He learned about the successful, well-managed Napa School of Music which was for sale by the original owner, Peter Sykes. Ralf had experience as a musician, playing rock and roll and the blues. He also attended music schools in his youth. Impressed with the quality of the school, the instructors, and the beauty of Napa Valley,
they made their decision, bought the school and began to settle in. The last things Ralf expected to see within a few short months were wildfires lapping at the edge of town followed by subsequent, rolling power outages, and for good measure, a global pandemic to top it off. Ralf credits the Napa School of Music families for their support and patience, as well as the school’s administrative staff and instructors; it was due to their quick action and
flexibility the continued success of the school was ensured during such unexpected and numerous hardships.
Napa School of Music is known in surrounding cities: American Canyon, Fairfield, Sonoma, and Vallejo also send their students to the North Napa campus. Many students have progressed into professional musicians. Two of Justin-Siena music instructors actually oversee the choir and band programs for the high school.
When the fires first burned in 2017, the school had its first shut down, that lasted seven days. Ralf was immediately thankful for the business interruption insurance; who would have known it would be needed so soon? Then came the power outages, maybe better known at the beginning as rolling blackouts; these necessitated the purchase of generators to keep the school fully operational when the power was cut. Then came 2020 . . . for which all the previous hardships were merely good practice, as the months ahead would bring challenges and unforeseen expenses that only the most flexible and most prepared businesses would survive. Within a moment’s notice, the teachers and students went from 100% in-class learning to closed doors, forced by a virus run amok. The staff began discussions of how to most efficiently move from in-person learning to virtual sessions on a Friday afternoon and the program was fully operational by Monday. Utilizing software and Zoom sessions, most of the school’s classes were able to continue uninterrupted. (The youngest students did not participate in Zoom instructions.) Not all programs lent themselves to virtual classes; one example was the Summer Camps. It became obvious the intended ‘camp’ atmosphere didn’t translate. Recognizing what wouldn’t work was just as important as what was going to work well. Virtual band was no fun for the kids. A compromise was made and they turned the class into a recording opportunity where each student’s part was recorded and then digitally mixed. In the end, more than 6,000 lessons were completed virtually during ‘lock-down’. By the looks of things on this summer afternoon, Napa

School of Music rolled with the punches in spite of the many challenges faced in such a short amount of time. All staff and instructors are vaccinated against COVID-19. There was not even a question of ‘if’ it should be required— everyone just did it. Masks are required inside the building. The office lobby was reconfigured to accommodate distance and capacity at the doorway. Physical barriers have been set up in each classroom. Full body length dividers stand between vocal students and the coach. Additional keyboards have been purchased for each piano and keyboard class. Flutes are taught outside at this time and all other brass or wind instructions have been put on hold until further notice. Almost all students have returned to the classroom setting with every possible precaution put in place, protecting health and safety above all else. Ralf purchased twenty air purifiers that are strategically placed throughout the building. Stringed instruments, drums and vocals bring life to the Zeller Building on Maher Street. Most of the sixteen instructors came along with the transition of ownership. A strong connection to community keeps them engaged with the students. Most students are from Napa. But the quality of instruction at
Affordability and easy access to music for students of all ages is of the utmost importance to Ralf. Starting very soon, a new program begins for children as young as two years old. The tiniest brightly colored chairs were being unpacked for the pre-school kids, Music Fun Time, an on-going program, will focus on learning music theory and scales right from the start. Ralf said, “This will be a class where they actually learn about music. They won’t just be jumping and dancing to some rhythm; it’s really learning notes on the scale.” An important part of musical instruction for young kids is gaging their actual interest in learning music. Borrowing an instrument from the school to begin with is an easy way for parents to jump in without a big upfront expense to purchase an instrument. There are a variety of instruments available and a student may explore options as they find their niche. A couple of times a year, the school offers the opportunity for the student to actually own the instrument which has been on loan after three to four months of dedicated instruction. The various, high-quality music programs are structured in threemonth increments, a Musical Ladder System. The students perform scheduled achievement tests, earning colorful wristbands with encouraging descriptors as they progress. They move on to acquiring trophies for achievement which motivate the students as well. “Sometimes you see the children cry when they earn a trophy, many of them never having earned a trophy before.” Ralf, and the staff, beamed with pride when the accomplishments of the students were mentioned. Their website
describes all available instructions and programs offered, as well as recital information and testimonials of satisfied customers. Our Local Partners are imperative to our success . . . The strength of the school is dependent on a strong, local music supply company. Napa Music Supply on Redwood Road fills the needs of the school on a daily basis. Diane Shibley and her husband opened the music supply store on Redwood Road in October of 2005, and they’ve been running full-speed ever since. Along with Diane, who works at the shop during the week, there are two full-time employees; Josh is the assistant manager (and an amazing guitarist) with more than a decade of experience on site, and Brad, their talented guitar tech. Although not formally trained, Brad works closely with a local Luthier to hone his skills. “Brad can repair, restring and upgrade almost any stringed instrument,” Diane said. A wide range of acoustic and electronic instruments are available for purchase and/or rental. Napa Music Supply

Although the doors were closed for ten weeks during COVID, Diane managed to keep the business going by selling items online and making deliveries and utilizing curb side pickup. Safety precautions have been put into place at the shop. To protect the health of their customers, Diane received a formula from Taylor Guitars which is used to sanitize the instruments and will not harm the finish. Customers are very understanding about any limitations due to COVID protocols. The shop is open seven days a week, closed only on Christmas, New Year’s Day, Easter and Thanksgiving. Ralf said that he could save money by purchasing instruments and supplies for the school online, but it is much more important to him that the local music store is supported. Saving ten percent is nowhere near as important as working together within our own community. And— Diane loves seeing the smile on a kid’s face when they receive their first instrument. As the school’s motto reads, “Building Self Esteem Through Music” . . . whether it’s a guitar, bass, drums, keyboards or vocals that piques your interest, give Napa School of Music and Napa Music Supply a call. And then, let the music play. Napa School of Music Recitals 2019
