Get Outside! DO THINGS OUTDOORS By Lisa Adams Walter

Biking Photo: Napa Valley Bike Shop

W

While we did not experience a fair share of rainy days over our most recent winter and spring seasons, a trademark of Napa Valley living is that, drought or not, raindrops are rare from roughly mid-May through October. This means that most days are perfect days to leave those four walls behind and get outside. Our ideal, temperate climate, coupled with outstanding scenery and vast accessibility, naturally create

10

August 2021

opportunities to do things outdoors. From strolling through towns, to parks and trails, to waterways, here are some ideas for this and the coming months, to “do things” outdoors.

Rather than sit and talk on the phone with a friend, it can be much more fun to arrange a meet-up, and then catch up on the latest while walking a neighborhood or trail.

Getting out and about immediately creates visions of healthy activities, that simultaneously get the heart pumping while feeding the mind and soul. A standard activity for me all year long is to go on a hike or simply take a good, long brisk walk.

Downtown Napa is an extremely walkable destination, with neighborhoods that boast an eclectic array of historic buildings. When walking, everything looks a bit different than when cruising by in a vehicle.

Feel free to explore, yet there are also guided tours around town, focused on several topics. I discovered that the UC Master Gardeners of Napa County host monthly guided “Tree Walk Tours” at Fuller Park. Private tours are also available, as well as selfguided tours that you can enjoy at any time with the assistance of your mobile smart phone. If getting out on the water is appealing, you can of course selflaunch a boat, kayak, paddle board or canoe. Enjoy Napa Valley is a local business, however, that rents supplies such as kayaks and paddle boards, as well as, offers guided tours on the Napa River. Fishing kayaks and bicycles are also available. Many of us own bikes, and if not, they can be rented as mentioned. Another great spot for renting bikes or booking a guided tour is Napa Valley Bike Tours (with locations in both

Yountville and Napa). I love to trek up and down the Vine Trail. While the trail is not yet complete (at some point in the future, the goal is that it will stretch all the way to Calistoga) there are miles of quite level, paved trails for walking, biking running and even skating! Yes, roller skating… read on. Lately I have noticed rollerblading as a retro activity, that seems to be on the rise. Up and down the Vine Trail, all about town, even in my own neighborhood I have noticed adventurous types on roller skates. Rollerblading, more appropriately known as “inline skating,” is a thing! The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is a terrific resource for discovering trails appropriate for different outdoor activities ranging from inline skating, to dog-walking trails, running trails and walking trails in our region, as well as nearby regions.

Even without searching online, there are plenty of local hikes that have been some of my favorites for years. Westwood Hills Park, Skyline and Alston Park are all easy, pretty much “beginner level” hiking parks that are available to everyone for free. Each provide differing vantage points of Napa, with pleasing and gratifying views from top spots in the parks. While created for tourists, the hiking recommendations from Visit Napa Valley are pretty incredible and will provide months of weekend hikes by searching “Things to Do” on their website, and then selecting “hikes.” Tennis has long been a popular activity, yet the emergence of pickleball in the past few years has not gone without notice. Several tennis courts have been converted, and clubs exist all over for this easy-tolearn sport. Napa Valley Pickleball is described as fun, friendly and inclusive. I have witnessed a similar attitude with

the Yountville Pickleball group, in that all levels of players are welcome. Pickleball is a life-size paddleball sport that in a way combines badminton, ping pong and tennis. Recently, we had relatives visit, which as a local always creates occasions to do things that are considered to be a bit more typical for tourists. In addition to supporting some restaurants while dining al fresco, we also imbibed in some shopping therapy on both Main Street in St. Helena, as well as, First Street Napa (the actual street and shopping complex) and the emerging 1400 block of Second Street (also in Napa, which includes Grace’s Table, Be Bubbly, Monday Bakery, Jeffries General Store and Muguette Renee Boutique) to support small businesses and merchants in both towns. While shopping, part of the time is naturally spent “inside.” Yet each of these shopping options offer the chance to leisurely stroll the streets while meandering indoors and out, with opportunities to stop and taste wine at an “urban” tasting room, if desired, along the way. We will likely have hot spot weather days here and there, but most around here are indeed pleasant. A few months of prime weather remain, so get out there and do things in the Napa Valley outdoors!

COMMUNITYSPOTLIGHT

“We thank our season ticket holders for being so patient and will have seats for them.” By Kathleen Reynolds Pictured above: Lucky Penny Co-Founders, Barry Martin and Taylor Bartolucci

20

napavalleymarketplace.com

August 2021

Was Barry Martin just a simple boy with a dream from Joplin, Missouri, who wanted to become a radio personality and act on stage?

“I went to college to be a teacher,” says Martin. “I majored in Education when I started at University of Missouri in Columbia. Quickly I found the curriculum wasn’t for me and became a theater major.”

where he got a job as a part-time announcer at a radio station. It led to full-time work in programing. At 21, he married and decided to locate somewhere with a good theater scene. That brought him to Minneapolis, and he landed a job at KSTP writing and producing commercials. He was offered an opportunity to work at a new station opening in Bettendorf, Iowa. Bettendorf is part of what’s known as the Quad Cities, which is a thriving cultural mecca in Iowa and Illinois.

His senior year this new direction took him to southern California,

“However, it was the ‘80’s and that was farm country,” says

Nope.

COMMUNITYSPOTLIGHT Barry. “The farm economy was floundering. Not a good time to start a new job in a new market.” He could see the handwriting on the wall. Relatives had moved from Joplin to San Francisco by then, so he sent out demo tapes. Before long, Barry learned that a radio station in Napa was interested. “Tom Young owned KVON and recognized the name of one of my Midwest references. That was May 1986. I knew nothing about Napa; I’d never been to northern California.” That was the start of Barry’s career in the Napa spotlight.

“I was a DJ for KVON-AM and KVYN-FM and worked with Mike Savage and George Carl,” recalls Martin. “I became program director and, despite some resistance from existing employees, reformatted programming and built-up live shows.” As happens often in radio, the station was sold to someone who had new ideas. Owner Charlie Moss planned to build a network of radio stations in resort markets. “In 1996-97, I transferred to Moss’s station in Taos, New

Mexico. Six months later, I was back at KVON.” Martin took on a new role in 2001, working as the Public Information Officer for the Napa River Flood Project, but continued as the morning show host on KVON until 2003. “The station sold again, and I asked to be let go. I had other work lined up and spent 15 years doing public information, including nine years of Community Outreach for the City of Napa and consulting.” 2009 brought more changes when he co-founded Lucky Penny Productions with Taylor Bartolucci. He has written several successful short plays. Currently, he’s back on KVON with his morning show and is writing the upcoming holiday show for Lucky Penny. “It’s called “A Napa Valley Christmas Carol,” and is a modern day take on the Dickens classic with a local twist. Rob Broadhurst, of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, has written original music, but it’s a different type of musical. We think people will enjoy it.”

“Lucky Penny weathered the pandemic by turning off all unnecessary expenses. We don’t have payroll. We got an Economic Injury Disaster Loan as a cushion. Our video theater was “pay what you can” in donations. This summer we are once again able to hold the Napa Academy of Performing Arts sessions for kids.” “I love teaching; after all, I started out as a teacher. Our intention was always to have an education portion of Lucky Penny and we have that with the Napa Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA).” They’re gearing up for their first full production back in their theater since COVID; a production of “The Little Mermaid” September 10 through 26. “We thank our season ticket holders for being so patient and will have seats for them.” With such a varied resume and work history, what is his proudest professional achievement? Lucky Penny House Managers

“Co-founding Lucky Penny,” he says. “Even before we had our own place, we made something out of nothing.

Now we have a physical location including 7200 square feet of rehearsal, storage and performance space. Most theater company must truck stuff around in and out of storage.” “We had a BHAG—Big, Hairy Ambitious Goal. There were many renovations needed, we salvaged stuff through donations. Dreamweavers and the Opera House gave us equipment and drapes. Now our equipment is getting better. We feel if we do good work, the money will come. We don’t do a lot of fundraisers; we earn our way.” “Brian Watson does all the scenic work that I used to do and it’s an enormous help. There aren’t enough hours in the day to do administration, teaching and directing.” “I’m happiest when I’m not in a show, but in the office listening to the audience. To see people as they leave and knowing we made them happy.”

What don’t we know about Barry? “I spent 15 years as a national level soccer coach. It started getting harder as I aged,” he says and laughs. “I phased soccer out and got back into theater. There’s a line in a play I did 10 years ago, “The Lion in Winter.” Henry says there’s a stage in life where there’s a burst of vigor before inevitable decline. Well, I might be in a slow decline.” We doubt that, but will he ever retire? “I can’t imagine doing nothing all day. I feel blessed to have been able to live for 35 years in Napa and grateful to those who gave me work in radio and for the city. People are surprised that I’m not the most social person. But I’m grateful that my family is thriving and that I get to wake up to this place and lifestyle.”

“I’d like to write more and travel more. My daughter and her four-year-old live in Brooklyn and I haven’t been able to see them. My son has two children and lives in Sacramento.”

Race Across the West

930 miles - Oceanside, CA to Durango, CO Race Across the West (RAW) attracts ultraendurance cyclists from around the globe to take on some of the finest terrain the Western USA has to offer. The route travels west to east from the sandy beaches of Oceanside, CA, over the Sierra Mountains and into the scorching Mojave and Sonoran deserts. It continues climbing into the mountains surrounding Flagstaff, AZ, through the expanse of Monument Valley, UT and eventually ending up in the Rocky Mountain town of Durango, CO.

Team Adagio: Dave Rosentha Ron Whitmill, C l, huck Olson & G lenn Hughes.

Team Adag io

Team Adagio, a four-man cycling team based out of Napa, cycled non-stop, completing the 930-mile race, with 56,000 feet of climbing in 63 hours, 40 minutes. The riders were Dave Rosenthal, Ron Whitmill (captain), Chuck Olson and Glenn Hughes. Their ages ranged from 64 to 70 years old. Eight crew members in two vans and an RV also worked around the clock to support the racers, by transporting the teams, providing mechanical support, encouragement, food and hydration. The team persevered throughextreme heat up to 117 degrees, against numerous sections of headwinds, and the misfortune of some bicycle mechanical issues. So why train for months and log thousands of miles in the saddle for such a grueling challenge? We are enthusiastic about cycling and we enjoy the training aspect as much as the race itself. Most importantly, we get a chance to push ourselves outside of our daily comfort zone while sharing an epic adventure with a group of friends that cannot be explained, only experienced.

Imagine that you have a smart, talented, beautiful daughter who is attending her first year at a prestigious university. Then imagine that same cherished child is snatched from the world by a senseless, brutal act of violence.

For Arik and Hannah Housley, that nightmare became reality when their daughter, Alaina, was killed in a mass shooting while out dancing with her college friends.

What would you do?

After a period of reflection, the Housley family started the Alaina’s Voice Foundation to be a positive change in mental health. “Alaina’s Voice Foundation has a mission to inspire hope and kindness through education, music and mental health initiatives,” says Arik. “We believe this is the best

way to inspire hope and kindness is by listening to music, together, outside with our community.’ On Sunday, August 15, on the Oxbow River Stage in downtown Napa, Matt Nathanson will headline a benefit concert for Alaina’s Voice. Tickets are limited and are $25 per person, available online at AlainasVoice.org. The doors open at 5 pm and the show starts at 6 pm. Producers of the show are BottleRock Presents, the producers of BottleRock Napa Valley, in partnership with Blue Note Entertainment Group and Another Planet Entertainment. “The night Alaina lost her life, along with 11 others, our world changed in an instant,” recalls Arik. “But in that moment of sorrow, we felt so much love from everyone around us. Some of our closest friends and perfect strangers showed kindness for which we could never thank them enough.” He and the board of Alaina’s Voice Foundation discussed what they could do to follow the vision of “Be the positive change.” They realized that people had a difficult time coping during the COVID pandemic due to isolation. People felt alone, sad, anxious and uncomfortable. They’d lost their jobs and had no access to mental health or were afraid to tell others of their fears.

“Many found themselves needing mental health support and therapy. However, there weren’t appointments available through their providers. Many were out of work and had no access or money to pay for therapy. We set up a small network of some amazing local therapists with all different specialties and allowed them to provide the services to people in the Napa Valley that were in need.” Arik says there’s no intention for Alaina’s Voice Foundation to build anything that will get in the way of or conflict with local organizations in the Napa Valley. Rather, they receive referrals, offer support, promote and spread the message of many such services as Mentis, COPE and NEWS. Patients aren’t told their help is coming by way of Alaina’s Voice.

“Shootings in our country are running rampant and suicides are significantly higher,” says Arik. “This is why Alaina’s Voice Foundation focuses on bridging the gap to get individuals the support they need. We want people to know, ‘It’s ok to not be okay. It’s ok to ask for help. It’s ok to be different.’ We are all human and sadly technology has removed so much of humanity in our daily lives.” All the money received from the fundraising concert goes to support the therapists who help the Alaina’s Voice Foundation. Also, all the efforts remain in the Napa Valley. Michael Franti headlined the first event, held at Blue Note in 2019,

attended by 600 concertgoers. The second event, supposed to be held in 2020, was to star Matt Nathanson. That show was postponed due to the pandemic. “Now we are excited and so incredibly grateful Matt Nathanson was still on board to play his music and help us spread Alaina’s Voice. He’s an amazing musician and great performer who plans to work with us to help promote hope and kindness. BottleRock, Blue Note and Another Planet have been unbelievably supportive to help spread the message with us, that we are all in this together.”

performers on the music scene today. His 2007 album “Some Mad Hope” yielded his breakthrough multi-platinum hit “Come on Get Higher.” His latest album, “Sings His Sad Heart” had the hit single “Used to Be,” which was a chart climber and hit the top 20 on Adult Top 40. Housley adds that there will be no VIP seats for this performance.

“There’re no private reserve seats. We are all there to smile, laugh, sing, dance and be together. Because we are

Should You Borrow or Take a Distribution from Your 401(k)? You might want to consider alternatives first. In this article, Bank of America explains why and how. When there’s a sudden need for a substantial amount of cash, many people think about taking money out of their 401(k)s. “It is understandable that people may want to consider doing so in extraordinary circumstances such as the coronavirus pandemic,” says Sylvie Feist, director, Retirement & Personal Wealth Solutions at Bank of America. What’s more, provisions of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act have eliminated potential additional penalties when taking an early distribution, and increased the portion of the vested assets that could be taken in a loan from a 401(k) plan account. “In some circumstances, your 401(k) may be your only choice. But as a general rule, dipping into your retirement funds to cover a short-term need could cost you more in the long run.,” Feist says.

Under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, you must repay the amount to an IRA by the federal income tax filing deadline for the year in which the offset occurred.

“Before you consider making a withdrawal from your future self, make sure you have explored other options.”

(SPOILER ALERT:

We hear all the time, how kids don’t want to play outside anymore, and just want to sit, slack-jawed, behind a gaming controller, in air-conditioned comfort, with mom on call for PB&J (with the crusts cut off).

to read, “you never forget how IT FEELS to ride a bike” and we would be just as accurate. The wind in one’s face. The bursts of speed. The freedom of going where YOU want the vehicle to go. For a kid, there is no substitute.

OK, maybe SOME of that, on some days. But the bottom line is that when provided the opportunity to get out there, and get active, it’s not too hard of a sell—especially when it involves riding bikes.

It’s true that bicycle riding among kids 12-under had fallen considerably in the years leading up to 2020, but COVID-19 changed all that, in an unexpectedlypositive way. Suddenly, bicycle riding was one of the only outdoor activities that families could do together, as soccer pitches, baseball diamonds and football gridirons all fell silent.

The old saying goes “you never forget how to ride a bike.” We could easily change that generational truth

The United States has experienced a “Bike Boom” unlike any seen since the 1970s, and local bike shops—once clawing their way from payroll to payroll—now have “dibs” deposits for bikes well-into 2022, as global supply chains strain to keep up.

In each of five sessions, the League features instruction, which teaches fundamental bike handling skills, and valuable life lessons like goal-setting, dusting-off and getting back on the bike in those rare instances when you fall, and “listening” skills, as riders receive their lessons from Coach Donny.

BMX LEAGUE FOR BEGINNERS BOOMS WITH BIKES

After a mid-session snack break, the riders line up in their age-appropriate groups, and race a four-start-fourfinish race. Points are accrued each lap, toward a season-end trophy.

Here in Napa, Olympic Medalist, Donny Robinson (BMX Racing, 2008) has seen unprecedented, and nationally-acclaimed participation in his beginners-only “BMX League” program, run at North Bay BMX in Kennedy Park.

And while all riders in the League earn a trophy, there are no “participation trophies” here. First, Second and Third places over the five weeks earn a “podium award,” while fourth through eighth place earn a “progression award,”

that recognizes and rewards the individual achievement of the racers. The “individual” aspect of BMX Racing is one that parents (and their riders) find very appealing. Each rider goes at their own pace and ability. Everyone “plays,” every time, in this League. Robinson gives us insight into the impact the League has on kids and their families. “It’s heartwarming to hear a mom talk about her family’s experience, with tears of joy in her eyes, now that her son or daughter has finally found their ‘thing.’ And, then have a nearby dad chime in that they tried every sport under the sun, but BMX Racing has been the

activity that has his kids keep asking ‘how many more days til BMX?’”

PEDDLING PEDALS After retiring from competition in 2016, Robinson has made it his life’s work to bring the sport he loves, and gave him so much, to families across the country. His now-trademarked rallying cry “Let’s Get Kids Back On Bikes” has brought thousands of families closer together, and untold numbers of new friendships and improved school grades as a result of his efforts, and those of volunteers at dozens of BMX tracks. Riding bikes is the fun part, of course, but it is just as much about

teaching young people the values that got him to the highest stage in sports. In a recent interview Donny told us, “Every week, we see kids breaking through their fears and gaining confidence that they use to build from. That shows up off the bike, in ways that parents never thought possible.” And he is just getting started. The Late-Summer season of his Napa BMX League is in the final stages of enrollment, and a fall season will soon be announced. But his eyes are set on growing the program beyond Napa Valley, with the dream being a network of beginner-level tracks dotting the map. “There are so many families who don’t have ready-access to a program

like this—whether due to their location or financial situation. I want to bring the program closer to those families, so they can experience all the positives we deliver here in Napa,” Robinson told us in a phone interview. That has been slow in coming, mostly due to his heavy commitments here. But connections are being made, and municipalities, private foundations, schools and community organizations are starting to take notice, reaching out to see how they can get in on the action. He leaves us with some important thoughts on “these kids today,” based on his five years of running the League program, and in his decades of prior experience running camps and clinics for more experienced racers: “Kids today are awesome...but they don’t usually go out and ride with their friends ‘til the street lights come on,’ like prior generations did.
