Feeling

S

Lucky?

W E CO U L D AL L U SE A B IT OF L U CK!

T

By Lisa Adams Walter

The dawn of March makes many of us feel green, in the spirited, let’s have some fun, St. Patrick’s Day is coming, sort of way. Thinking ahead to what here in the United States has become known as a day filled with the frivolity and luck, made me think about the feelings of luck overall. It is a bit exhilarating when one experiences luck! Yet, what is it that defines luck, and what makes one feel... lucky? Of course, there are two types of luck: good luck and bad luck. I will admit, I prefer the first. I am all for good luck! Many sources historically attribute the word luck of Middle Dutch origin, coming from luc, a shortening of gheluc which means “happiness, good fortune,” yet it may have made its way into the English language as a gambling term. Thank

goodness I am not a gambler, I’ve never felt particularly lucky when parting with my cash. The Irish seemed lucky in earlier centuries here in America, as many were involved in mining. Therefore, when a fortune was discovered deep underground, the mining term the “Luck of the Irish” was born due to the heritage of many hardworking miners. There is also a certain amount of superstition associated with luck. Many athletes wear lucky items, such as a lucky jersey or lucky socks, these are known as lucky charms (and not the edible type!). Some fans sport a lucky hat or sit in a lucky area of a stadium or arena to help their hopefullywinning team. Some of us claim that we have a lucky number, I certainly have mine. We all know that there really

Which leads me back to St. Patrick’s Day. It’s always fun to hunt for leprechauns, dress up in green, avoid getting pinched, enjoy some corned beef and cabbage, meet up with some friends, and have an Irish coffee or green beer on March 17.

isn’t anything positive associated with a VERY superstitious number: 13. Have you ever noticed that in hotels and high-rises (not common around here), the thirteenth floor is often missing from the elevator control panel? Clearly, that floor exists. But it isn’t called 13! Architects reassign the floor numbers to appease human distress. I discovered that the superstition associated with that number between 12 and 14 is so common that it even has its very own name, triskaidekaphobia. Thankfully thirteen does not adversely impact me, I have NO idea how that is pronounced.

This year, while we can still meet up in our safe bubbles, public celebrations will not be happening. I am counting my blessings, that we have all made it through this past year all the way to now. Like many of you, my family has suffered some heartbreaking and devastating losses. Let’s think positive, hope for health and safety, and count on a bit of luck. Join me in celebrating at home this month, and feeling lucky that we can be together in our small groups, looking forward to many celebrations to come!

It seems that most of us associate luck with positive feelings. I have been fortunate to find dozens of four-leaf clovers over the years. For some possible lucky reason, I have repeatedly been spotting them near my home over the past three years. I cannot help but to think that there must be a pot of gold nearby too. Fingers crossed! According to Psychology Today, luck may strongly be an attitude, “Clearly, believing oneself to be lucky is a more optimistic attitude than considering oneself unlucky, and can lead to taking greater and more frequent risks that can potentially result in greater rewards.” Definitely, I am a “the glass is half full” kind of gal! Okay, perhaps my positivity is the key that makes me feel lucky. Why not? If I have a choice, I would rather feel lucky than not. “Count your blessings,” I often exclaim!

ANN MCCARTHY CASH

y r i a AF T

The Ireland of Ann McCarthy Cash’s childhood wasn’t a current visitor’s version of green rolling hills and bucolic splendor. Rather it was of dampness, cold and hunger. For Ann grew up in the poorest part of Limerick, the same setting as Frank McCourt’s book, Angela’s Ashes. In fact, her mother knew Angela.

ANN MCCARTHY CASH AND HUSBAND ALAN

“We had no money,” says Ann. “My father left my mother with six children while he joined the British armed service for work. He died when I was six.” The pittance her mother made as a scrubwoman barely kept her children fed. “We lived with my grandmother because she had a small pension,” Ann says. To Ann, school was a reprieve. “I wanted to learn things. But there was no one to guide me.” Yet there was a spark in Ann McCarthy that went beyond her wild red hair.

18

March 2021

“I was always in trouble,” she says, which included an unauthorized trip into town one day. “It was the beginning of my fairy tale,” says Ann. For at Woolworth’s, Ann met a well-dressed tourist who took a liking to her. The feeling was mutual. Unbeknownst to Ann, the woman was the acclaimed novelist and screenwriter Jessamyn West, author of The Friendly Persuasion (shortened to Friendly Persuasion for the film). Jessamyn’s husband was Harry Maxwell (Dr. Mac) McPherson, who at the time was superintendent of the Napa Schools. He went on to found Napa Valley College and had an affinity for Ann because of her interest in learning. At the end of their vacation, Jessamyn and Mac presented Ann’s mother with an unusual request. “She asked if I could come to America to live with

1956 - ANN MCCARTHY CASH

“St. Patrick’s Day here made me sad. In Ireland, we’d wear green ribbons in our hair. We’d visit graveyards and talk about those no longer with us. There were bonfires in the neighborhood square and we’d sing the old songs. It was always lovely.”

them,” Ann says. “My mother didn’t want me to leave, but knew she knew it was a chance at a better life.” After much discussion, Ann’s mother agreed that she could go, if they took her sister Jean as well. Ann says she was frightened yet excited to leave Ireland. “In fairy tales, there’s also a dark side,” says Ann. Ann was raised in the Catholic faith and, in 1956, the Church held great influence over the Republic of Ireland citizenry. Their concern was a Catholic child going to live with West and McPherson, who were Quakers.

After many months of wrangling to obtain visas, West turned to her second cousin, Richard Nixon, then Vice President of the United States, to intercede with the American Ambassador William Taft in Dublin. Two days later, the girls had their visas. Jean didn’t embrace America nor connect with Jessamyn. By 1957, homesick and not adapting, Jean returned to Ireland. Ann stayed and the family moved to Napa. She was happy in school and comfortable with Jessamyn and Dr. Mac, but nostalgic for her family and Ireland.

Ann returned to Ireland a few years later, but was met with no enthusiasm. “Jean had told them that I was the cause of her being sent home, which wasn’t the truth.” Ann was now a stranger in two lands. “I didn’t fit in here or there.” Her only option was to go to work to help support the family. She and Jean found factory jobs in Birmingham, England. A year later, Jessamyn and Mac visited. “They wanted me to return to California and I wanted to go. By then I’d missed a year of school.” Her previous visa problems remained, but ultimately, she returned to the United States. At Napa High she had numerous friends and at 17, met a tall, darkhaired boy named Alan Cash at a

party. “There was something about him and as I stood there talking, I don’t know what came over me. I put my head on his chest.” She told Jessamyn that she was going to marry him. They dated for two years. During that time, Alan attended Napa Valley College and was in the National Guard. Ann worked in San Francisco at the telephone company. They eloped to Carson City when she was 19. In those days, the groom needed to be 21. Alan’s mother had to send a telegram to authorize the marriage. Like many newlyweds, they worked, scrimped and saved, but both attended colleges. “Alan got his master’s degree at Cal Berkeley and I graduated from San Francisco State,” she says. “Education was always important to us.” Alan went on to teach for 16 years at Berkeley Unified School District, then sold real estate before settling into his current career as co-owner of Schrette Insurance. Ann’s varied career included being a member of the Board of Education, Director of the Napa Valley College Foundation, and as a partner of Cash Malmgren Communications, consultants for non-profits. In his final years, Ann left work to care for Mac, who had formally adopted her in 1990. He lived to be 99. died in 1984. Ann’s sister Jean eventually returned to the United States, but neither have visited Ireland since their mother passed away. To update Ann’s fairy tale, the couple have two “amazing” grown daughters, Lysa and Mollie. Both received excellent educations and pass their love of learning on to the Cash’s five grandchildren. Now St. Patrick’s Day is a very happy celebration.

Smart Ways to Transfer the Family Business Three ways to create a meaningful legacy while generating a healthy retirement income for yourself For most business owners, retirement is either a subject they welcome or the last thing they want to think about. If you’re looking forward to that day, you’ve probably already started preparing to move on from your business. “For many business owners, their retirement plan is their business,” says Judith Anderson, senior vice president, Retirement Personal Wealth Services, Bank of America Merrill Lynch. If you’re not thinking ahead, bear in mind that there are very real advantages to beginning to prepare for it now. “Small business owners typically re-invest their profits back into running their business and generally do very little planning ahead for a retirement that may be five, 10, 15 or more years down the road,” says Anderson. Selling your business at retirement will supplement your income, but it shouldn’t be the only asset you have to rely upon, says Anderson. “Instead, in anticipation of that day, choose an actual retirement plan that fits your needs.” Taking the time to plot your company’s future can ensure that you leave on your own terms. It also puts you in a better position to retain control, at least during any transition period, so that proceeds from your business — which in many cases are your biggest asset — have the greatest potential to provide you with strong, steady retirement income. Ask yourself these questions as you begin to create a plan to help meet your needs.

What’s your company’s real value?

Many privately held companies reflect the people who’ve built them. In some cases, the owner is the business, begging the question, “Can your business still survive after you sell it?” As you assess your company, Anderson suggests thinking about what your business is actually worth. Consider if that value could be enough to base your retirement on, notwithstanding other savings and investments that you may have. If you conclude that the company is viable without you there to run it, your next step is to get an accurate valuation of its worth, says Joe Astrachan, emeritus professor of management at Kennesaw State University in Georgia. That’s essential not just for a sale, but also in consideration of taxes and to help you gauge how much retirement income you might expect. A professional valuation and tax expert can help you look past your emotional attachment to the company, gauge its true value as well as the market for such a business, and arrive at a realistic number.

What are your retirement income needs?

million for individuals and $22.80 million for married couples in 2019.) This gives business owners considerable latitude to transfer a part or all of the company as a gift. You may owe taxes on amounts exceeding the exemption, but once the business is out of your hands, it’s no longer part of your estate, and future growth of the company won’t subject your estate to additional taxes. You might sell the business by providing financing assistance. You may choose to sell the business to heirs — or an outside buyer — by lending them the money through a note sale, which allows the buyer to pay you back directly. The advantage to you is a steady stream of income from the principal and interest from the loan for an agreedupon period. You could execute a partial sale while retaining a portion of business assets and income. You may pay capital gains tax on any profit from the sale, but you’ll also get a steady income from rent or lease of office space or other assets. Whatever choice you make, a smooth transition can be the crowning legacy of the years of care and effort you’ve poured into your business. It can also leave you with income to support your life’s next act, or in some situations keep you involved in a business you love. And you can have the satisfaction of knowing that your vision has the potential to live on for generations to come.

How can you structure the transfer?

For more information, contact Merrill Lynch Financial Advisor Eric F. Gonzales in the Napa, CA, office at 707.254.4606 or eric_gonzales@ml.com.

If you’re planning on selling your business, Anderson advises that you determine how much income you’ll need to support your lifestyle and retirement goals, and what portion of that will come from the sale of the business — as compared with your investments and other assets. Keep in mind, too, that merely matching your current salary in retirement may not be enough if the business has also been paying for things like health insurance, car leases, club memberships and tax preparation — expenses that you’ll have to start covering yourself. “Some owners may be used to living a $400,000 lifestyle on a much smaller income from the business,” Anderson says. “It can be a shock to discover what it costs to replace those things.” Consider that selling your business at retirement will supplement your income, but it shouldn’t be the only asset you have to rely upon, says Anderson. “Instead, in anticipation of that day, choose a retirement plan (such as a SEP IRA, individual 401(k)/401(k)) that fits your needs.” Even after receiving a lump sum from a sale, many former business owners can stay involved and earn income by serving on the board of directors or consulting. You might even continue helping out in day-to-day operations in a reduced but vital role such as serving clients who’ve been with the company for years and are used to working with you. If you own an office building or other physical assets, another option for generating retirement income is to retain those assets and lease or rent them back to the business. Astrachan recommends that such arrangements be agreed upon beforehand and spelled out clearly in the formal transfer or sale agreement with the new majority owners. That should also be the case if you’re turning the business over or selling it to other family members. If you plan to transfer the business to family members or longtime employees, rather than sell to an outside buyer, weigh these options. Each has its own advantages. Consider transferring the business as a gift, and drawing an income from the new owners. In late 2017, Congress increased the lifetime gift exemption to $10 million for an individual — $20 million for married couples — and set it to adjust annually for inflation. (The exemption is worth $11.40

Goodman House “ THE

GE O R G E ”

THE HA NDSOMEST HO USE IN TOWN

by Craig Smith

W

When it was nominated for the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, the Goodman House at 492 Randolph was described as “one of Napa’s most successfully executed examples of late nineteenth-century residential architecture.” The write up went on to say, “When compared with the hundreds of other residences from that period in Napa, the George Goodman Jr. House emerges as one of the ten or twelve most significant.” Shortly after the house was built in 1891, a local journalist called it, “the handsomest house in town.” Although it was widely reported that banker George Goodman Sr. built the home as a wedding gift for his son George Jr., this was a misconception. The house was actually financed by George Jr. himself. Construction took

ten months, and was noted at the time for “its modern conveniences, including fire hoses discreetly located at each floor; electric start buttons (or switches) for the gas-electric combination lights, a security system with alarms and special non-skeleton key locks, and indoor plumbing that was eventually connected to the city’s future sewer lines.” The Register made a point of noting there was no outhouse located on the residence’s 3/4-acre parcel. Unfortunately, after living there with his family for only 2 ½ years, George Jr. died of tuberculosis. His wife and daughter returned to San Francisco, and the home was sold several times in the following decades. Sadly, the building, which was already suffering signs

of disrepair, was badly damaged by the 2014 earthquake. It might have been left to further decay if Patty Theodorides and her daughter Kiki hadn’t driven by it several times. “We used to see this place and think, something like this would be great to bring back to life,’” said Kiki, “but it wasn’t for sale.” Until it was. In 2016, the house went on the market and was purchased by Patty. Together with her daughter Kiki and son George (all three coincidentally bankers, just like the Goodmans), 28

they began an extensive renovation of over $3 million dollars and converted it to a boutique luxury inn. “The house was dilapidated,” said Kiki. “The foundation was badly damaged and there was lots of dry rot and earthquake damage. Besides having to repair all that, the building needed all new electrical, HVAC, fire sprinklers and plumbing. The property presented a lot of original architectural details that were able to be restored, such as inlay hardwood floors, main staircase wooden banisters, and stained glass

windows, including one depicting doves, a feature touted when the house was first built. On the first floor, the Theodorides family added a gorgeous demonstration kitchen which is open to the grand living room. “The third floor needed a lot of thought and planning”, said Kiki. “Being the attic, we needed to make sure it was appealing, so we opened up the space by exposing the interior ceiling peaks and uncovering the beautiful wooden support beams. These decisions have now made these some of our most welcoming rooms.”

One of the alterations done many years prior to the Theodorides ownership was the enclosure of the front porch. This is now the dining room where local Italianborn artist Fabio Sanzogni painted an amazing mural, which is a true work of art. As for the exterior paint, the level of detailing called for a color expert. “We brought in Bob Buckter of San Francisco to select the color pallet. He has the experience and does a lot of fine detail work on Victorians in San Francisco,” said Patty. The Theodorides used mostly a local craftsman for the project. Juan Chavez with JMC Construction. “Juan Chavez was amazing, he really worked well with our family,” said Kiki. “Juan and my father Jim, who project managed March 2021

along with my mom, remedied many critical obstacles.” This month, “The George,” as they named it, will be set to open for guests. The name is homage to the late George Goodman Jr. Or is it? Patty jokes that the name could come from her family’s Greek heritage. “George is a very Greek name,” she noted. “My father, my son, my grandson, my uncle, my father-in-law are all named George.” Either way, the newly refurbished boutique luxury inn is stunning, and adds even more character to the neighborhood. “We were aware when we started that making these kinds of changes could be emotional for many of our neighbors. Fortunately, we’ve had a lot of really positive support,” said Kiki.

WINTER GARDENING by Jane Callier, UC Master Gardener

HOT LIPS SALVIA

A

wet El Niño would be abundantly welcome and would bring great peace of mind. A well-watered plant is better equipped to withstand cold weather, and it’s time to start thinking about frost protection for sensitive plants. A priority for most gardeners is to protect their citrus trees. Siting

plants according to the best, local microclimate available is a valuable boost to success in growing them. The sun is further south in the winter time, so frost-sensitive plants such as citrus benefit from a warmer, sunny, southern exposure. Other microclimate factors affecting heat retention are plants or fences that work as windbreaks,

proximity to walls or a swimming pool that retains heat. It can be a matter of the only one or two degrees this protection offers that might determine whether 20% or 80% of your fruit freezes during a cold snap. Fall is the best time to plant perennials. They will establish their roots and be ready to grow in the spring and more able to withstand the oncoming heat of summer. Selecting plants that are suited to California’s summer; dry, Mediterranean climate are the best candidates. Also, select plants with the goal of providing pollinators with year-round pollen and nectar. Some very easy-to-grow and easy-to-care–for, “bulletproof” plants, that meet both of these qualities are in the salvia family. Consider ‘Hot Lips,’ a plant that is always smiling, or ‘Black and Blue’ with its dramatic, black calyces (the part that hold the petals). They bloom from early spring until very late in the fall and the bees seem to be dizzy with happiness gathering their nectar. Salvia is a huge plant genus, with an almost–unlimited, color palette that will suit every taste. For pollinators still active in the dead of

BLACK AND BLUE SALVIA

winter, some flowering plants are clover, often grown as a cover crop, camellia, manzanita, flowering quince, flowering currant and witch hazel. Intrepid gardeners might also try a winter daphne. The daphne has a well-earned reputation of being finicky to grow, but if it’s successful it will be one of the most cherished plants in the winter garden. Their out-of-this-world fragrance is discernable many feet away from the plant. In the best of conditions it is a relatively short-lived plant, rarely lasting more than 8 years. Winter daphne has been described as “at least having the decency to usually die quickly instead of lingering for years.” A garden landscape changes over time, and maybe some plants need to be transplanted to a more suitable site. For example, maybe a neighbor’s tree has grown too large and now shades plants that need to be in the sun. If plants aren’t too large to move, a transplant shovel that tapers to a narrow blade can be used for precise digging around the intended candidate without

RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD AND BLACK AND BLUE SALVIA

disturbing neighboring plants. Fall is the perfect time to divide and transplant perennials. Dividing a large perennial will reinvigorate the plant. In general, springblooming plants should be divided in the fall, and fallblooming plants should be divided in the spring. Keep your transplants cool and moist. It’s too late to start winter vegetables from seed, but you can try starts that are still available at nurseries. Harvest dates depend on weather and continue until hot weather comes. Warm soil conditions favor growth, and Napa County has had a very warm fall. When frost comes, it’s welcome in crops like kale, bringing out its sweetness. When the temperature drops too far, growth will stop until the weather warms. Chard can be planted any time. Garlic, shallots, leeks and onions can be planted in November, and spinach can be planted from September through April. Plant some bulbs for spring bloom. Prepackaged bulbs are less expensive, but they are usually smaller and may produce less reliable blooms. Instead, choose heavy, dense bulbs with no decay, mold or fungus. Many gardeners in mild climates practice “pre-chilling” such bulbs as crocus, hyacinth and tulips in order to produce longer stems and better flowers. Tests done in Northern California by Sunset magazine with the UC Master Gardeners showed some surprising results. Pre-chilling these bulbs produced normal blooms and very little difference in height. Chilling is optional for Bay Area gardeners. For best selection, now is the time to place orders for dahlia tubers. Many popular varieties sell out 38

quickly, and growers can only predict the number of tubers that a plant will produce. Check the UC Master Gardeners of Napa Valley website: ucanr.edu/sites/ucmgnapa/ for more gardening resources, including A Month By Month Guide to Gardening in the Napa County.
