Burnett Therapeutic Services (BTS) was founded by Marriage and Family Therapist and Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Dr. Mitze Burnett to provide services in partnership with local doctor offices to ensure that members of the community can access mental and behavioral (autism) health services in a timely manner.

We firmly believe that the amazing team of professionals at BTS is the reason we are able to make a difference in so many lives and we are so grateful to each one of our staff! It’s important for all staff members to know they are truly cared about and that we honor their decision to be a part of something bigger while working at BTS.

Dr. Burnett graduated from Pacific Union College with a Bachelor of Social Work degree and then obtained her Master of Arts and Doctorate in Psychology, Summa Cum Laude. During her professional career, she fell in love with serving families affected by a loved one with Autism and/or intellectual/developmental disability. This passion and love drove her to start Burnett Therapeutic Services. Mitze is married to her husband Clay and they share two children, Myles, age 6, and Macy, age 4.

The team at Burnett Therapeutic Services would like the community to know that “There are services and supports out there for you, your family, or someone you know! No matter what you are going through or dealing with, you do not have to face it alone. Everyone universally has struggles and difficulties, but there are people in the community here who can help!” “If you suspect that your child might be delayed or on the spectrum, don’t wait to reach out! Early intervention provides the best outcomes for children with delays. And if you are a parent of a child with delays or on the spectrum, you deserve to be able to talk to someone as well. It can be difficult on parents and marriages, don’t take it on alone. Reach out for support and realize that there are people out there that want to help and are trained to help!”

Dr. Burnett feels a huge sense of gratitude to have two of her colleagues from pre-BTS days work alongside her! Amy Montanez and Melissa Holbrook, along with countless others work endlessly to make BTS a favored place to work. The management team combine their professionalism, teamwork, and leadership to make it possible for BTS to deliver excellent services. “It seems that they think of ways to better our services every day and they push me to be the best leader and clinician that I can be”.

We are hopeful, above all else, that our practice can make a difference in the community and that those who need help can find, and get, that help promptly!

~ 32ND ANNUAL ~

Holiday Candlelight Tour by Rebecca Yerger

2288 THIRD STREET

T

To boost your Yuletide mood, stroll along First, Seymour and Third Streets to tour nine historic Napa buildings during Napa County Landmarks 32nd Annual Holiday Candlelight Tour. On Saturday, December 9 from 2 to 6 pm, enjoy the charming to sophisticated interiors

of these private homes, an intimate boutique hotel and the neighborhood’s sacred place all decked out in their holiday finery. Set against the backdrop of a brisk December afternoon that fades into a chilly dusk, the longstanding seasonal tradition will also

showcase locally owned antique, classic and vintage vehicles (weather permitting). The air will also be filled with holiday music performed by local talent. Another treat for the senses will be tasty sweets from local purveyors served at the reception. Held in

Turnbull Hall of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, the Holiday Candlelight Tour begins at this location. Before embarking on the self-guided tour, you will need to check-in and receive your tickets at the hall, and brochure filled with details about each featured property. Architecturally, Turnbull Hall is in stark contrast to the Old World inspired Gothic Revival style of the church. The hall is of the MidCentury Modern style designed by Napa’s noted Modernism architect, the late Robert Keenan. The St. Mary’s Church Sanctuary will be open for three hours, 2 to 5 pm. (St. Mary’s holds an evening mass every Saturday from 5:30 to 6:30 pm within their church.) However, while open, the richly appointed sanctuary will be open to view. Within the church, and at every Holiday Candlelight Tour location, docents will be on-site to share historical and architectural information about the property. Live music will be performed by parishioners of the church: Ingrid Foster, Alchemy Crystal Singing Bowls with Michael Pratt and Rylan Nikolai Bates. Three private residences on Third Street will welcome the Holiday Candlelight Tour ticket-holder. The charming farmhouse at 2288 Third Street is modest in size and Queen Anne details. However, its interior possesses an array of details and features too numerous to list. It’s kitchen is a must see! It’s a foodie’s dream come true with a fully appointed chef’s kitchen.

“After 32 years, the Holiday Candlelight Tour is a Close by is the elegantly detailed 2265 Third Street residence. Both its interior and exterior are adorned with elaborate wood trims, moldings and other decorative elements. The front porch leads to double solid wood doors. Just inside in the foyer is the intricately detailed interior staircase. While the home features architectural detailing from the 19th century, the furnishings and interior appointments are thoroughly modern. The final home along this street is 2110 Third Street. Its architecture is inspired by the Tudor style. Typical of a home with its design rooted in England, the exterior entrance onto the property is through a vine-covered garden gate. The interior of this modest sized home retains many of its original details including solid oak flooring, barrel ceiling and an eight-foot tall, peaked,

multi-paned window. The serene gardens and exterior spaces of this property will also be included on this tour. Nearby at 817 Seymour Street is a Tudor Revival home. Although kindred in spirit architecturally, it does differ from 2110 Third Street in design and detailing. Its distinctive features include Medieval English details, such as a turret and decorative chimney. The interior features cove ceilings and hardwood flooring. And true to its English design heritage, the property has a charming rose garden. For the event, the current property owners will be paying homage to a previous owner of their home by adorning their table with settings of blue, silver and crystal similar to those used for a 1936 post-Yule party. About a block away, or so, is 2117 First Street. This Queen Anne cottage

was built for John Edward O’Neill in preparation for his marriage to Harriet Neilsen in 1893. While modest is size, it retains much of its original details and features including redwood woodwork, dark amber relief tiles and brass surround on the walnut coal burning fireplace. The current owners love the holidays and decorate the home until its brimming over with special collections of Christmas decor. The final two 2023 Holiday Candlelight Tour sites are at 1755 First Street, east of Jefferson. And located on the southeast corner of First and Jefferson Streets is the Blackbird Inn. It served as a private residence from 1902-1970s before becoming an office. About 20 years ago, Scott Warren began the arduous process of refurbishing the Craftsman residence into an eight-room inn. He spent countless hours handcrafting

festive Yule time tradition.” - Jonathan Franz every detail. Completed in 2000, the final results was (and is) an ambiance synonymous with Craftsman – rich and warm details that flow naturally, effortlessly, throughout the building. Warren’s exceptional work and stewardship garnered him a Napa County Landmarks Award of Merit in 2001. Adjoining the Inn to its south is the Finch Guest House – a Queen Anne cottage. Once again, Warren meticulously transformed the small residence damaged by the 2014 Napa earthquake into four guest rooms. While elegantly appointed, a bit of humor was subtly incorporated into a Finch Guest House artglass window. It is the Star Trek Next Generation’s U.S.S. Enterprise spaceship. Surrounding the guest

house is a beautiful year-round garden designed by Warren. Although completed and ready to open for business in early 2020, the pandemic delayed its grand opening. However, when it was finally opened, it was part of the twelve-room Blackbird Inn & Finch Guest House boutique hotel. Regarding the upcoming event, one of the property owners, Jonathan Franz, said, “The Holiday Candlelight Tour allows us to step back in time as we tour through these primarily private homes to give us a sense of connection to Napa’s history and heritage.” He added, “After 32 years, the Holiday Candlelight Tour is a festive Yule time tradition.”

Wanderland DOWNTOWN NAPA

Christmas awakens the senses in all of us – the smell of Christmas candles, the sound of caroling, the site of Christmas cards on the mantle. And then there is the Christmas Tree. There is something magical about Christmas Trees that makes even adults take a lingering look. Now you can come to Downtown Napa and look at over fifty trees, plus earn up to $300 for doing so. Over fifty Downtown Napa businesses will be going all out to decorate their trees, all part of Wanderland of Trees. The idea is to “wander” and look at them all. A map of the tree locations will be listed on DoNapa.com. From December 1 until Christmas Eve, you and your family can visit as many as you wish – all fifty if you’d like. If you see a tree that catches your eye, you can vote for it. In fact, you can vote for as many trees as you wish as often as you wish. Each time you do, you’ll be entered into a drawing with the other people who ‘vote’ on trees, one entry each time you vote. From those entries, one will be chosen to receive $300 in gift cards, which can be redeemed anywhere. One runner-up will get a $100 card – just for looking at beautiful Christmas trees. And when you go downtown, be sure and stop by the 30’ tall lighted tree in Veterans Park. It’s a gift from the property owners in downtown through their Property-Based Improvement District. It’s the perfect place for a family photo, to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, or just

by Craig Smith

take in the beauty of the tree and the surrounding lights adorning the bridges on First and Third Streets. Walk along the riverfront and enjoy the many outdoor decorations there as well. If you aren’t in the Christmas spirit after that, well, maybe Scrooge is a not-to-distant relative. Christmas Trees are probably the most ubiquitous icon of the Holiday – one stands in virtually every house in America. The tradition of a decorated tree originated in Germany, where decorations included “roses made of colored paper, apples, wafers, tinsel and sweetmeats.” Moravian Christians began to illuminate Christmas trees with candles, which were soon replaced by Christmas lights once electricity was in use. Today’s decorations range from homemade, gifts from others and store bought. To each family, their tree is unique, beautiful and worthy of long, lingering looks. In addition to viewing trees, a visit with Santa is a Christmas must-do. He’ll be at the Cork Oak in First Street Napa on Saturday, December 17 from 11 am to 4 pm. He’ll be back the next day, Sunday, December 18 at Milo and Friends Pet Boutique, from 11 am to 3 pm. All pets will be gifted a free bag of treats and Journey Day will be on-hand to perform Holiday music. Natalie Syverson Photography will make sure you get a photo with Santa and your dog, which is free with a $50 purchase. It’s going to be a great Holiday Season. Visit Downtown Napa and enjoy it!

Salmon Mousse

Stuffed Mushrooms

INGREDIENTS 4 oz smoked salmon 8 oz cream cheese, softened 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice 1 Tbsp minced red onion ¼ cup fresh dill sprigs Dill for garnish Salt and pepper to taste

(adapted from Allrecipes.com) INGREDIENTS 12 fresh mushrooms ½ pound ground beef, turkey or sausage 1 Tbsp minced onion 1 clove garlic, minced 1 Tbsp butter ¼ cup breadcrumbs salt and pepper to taste ¼ cup heavy cream ¼ cup butter, melted 1 tsp chili powder

Mousse can be molded on a plate or piped from a bag onto crackers or croutons. 7. Garnish with additional dill and a slice of lemon

Almost Lost in the Slipstream:

THE LIFE OF

It began with a message about a bottle from Sara Courtney: I was one of your students at NVC 20+ years ago. I loved your class! You used a photo of my grandfather and aunt in one of your textbooks about California history. I’m wondering if you know anything about a 19th century drugstore in Napa called E.N. Apothecary. I pulled a small, old bottle out of the mud by the Napa River today. It had “E.N. Boynton Apothecary Napa City Cal” embossed on it. Sara explained: We were fishing in the river last weekend and saw the bottle partially exposed in the mud along the bank. This was along the West side of the river a little way past Moore’s Landing. We have found old bottles along that portion of the river before. My partner usually says where there are old bottles. It’s likely folks used to back up to the bank and dump, or sometimes the bottom of the river would be dredged with a clamshell bucket and the mud would be dropped on the bank along with bottles and other debris. A lot of the bottles found around there are old medicine bottles. Our research reveals that Edwin N. Boynton was born on July 14, 1822

in Elmira, New York. He studied medicine and graduated in 1843 from the Medical College at Geneva, New York. He practiced his profession there successfully till 1850, when he emigrated to California. He crossed by way of Santa Fe and Arizona and arrived in San Diego in September. After working as both a physician and miner on the Feather River near Auburn for about three years, he arrived in Napa County in 1853 to practice medicine in Napa and Lake County. Next, he moved to Vallejo in 1855, establishing himself as an apothecary and physician. Early American pharmacies were referred to as apothecaries, and pharmacists were often called druggists or chemists. The role of the pharmacist then included preparing and dispensing remedies and counseling patients. By the 19th century, Edward Parrish of the APhA standardized the name “pharmacist” for all pharmaceutical practitioners. Until the 1950s, pharmacists prescribed, made, and dispensed medicines and provided patient counseling. Boynton married Winifred (Winnie) Morrison, ten years his junior, on April 25, 1859, and the new couple moved back to Napa, where he formed a partnership with Dr. W. W. Stillwagon. Soon after, they purchased the stock of medicinals of L.J.Walker.

(Orange Flower Toilet Extract, A most delicious addition to the bath) Toilet Soaps of ad grades and prices. Physicians’ prescriptions accurately compounded.

Boynton made his mark on Main Street. He stood high in the ranks of the Oddfellows, listed as a member as a past Grand in 1872. Early historian CW Menefee notes that he was “considered one of the most zealous laborers to get the Oddfellows building erected across the street on the west side from the Opera house.”

Doctor Angel had an office on the corner of Main and First Street. Pioneer Drugs was the competition across Main Street. Both stores had doctors with offices in the building, Dr. Stillwater in Boynton’s and Dr. Ponds in Pioneer’s. The legend on the Sanborn Fire Insurance Map of 1886 shows Boynton‘s drug store colored pink denoting that it was built of brick; behind it was a wooden storage area and laboratory shown in brown. On the bank of Napa Creek stood a wooden platform directly facing the Joss house (temple) on the south end of the Chinese community.

Boynton‘s store at 95 Main Street stood on the east side, among a district of medical practitioners including pharmacists, physicians, and a homeopath. Dr. Dodge had an office right next door to Boynton, and the homeopathic Sarah and her son with the E. N. Boynton bottle.

Common medicines used in 1800s included antipyretics (for fever) such as willow bark and meadowsweet, along with cathartics from various plants as a cleanser of the lower gastrointestinal tract; Opium to combat diarrhea and cough; Cocaine to relieve toothaches or oral pains; Camphor to soothe itchy skin; Arsenic and mercury to treat venereal diseases, primarily syphilis, and Disinfectants such as carbolic, chlorine, lime, charcoal, and sulfur.

Dosage methods included powders, pills, tablets, gelatin capsules, pastilles, lozenges, mixtures, tinctures, and emulsions. What do we know about the actual bottle that Sara found? E.N. Boynton Apothecary Napa City, CAL was embossed on the front along with a mortar and pestle logo. The style of the bottle is known as a Philadelphia Oval. This style ranges from 1/2 ounce through 32 ounces. In the decades immediately following the Revolution, American glassmaking flourished because of restrictive tariffs and rising domestic need. In 1806, the parent firm of Whitall Tatum began to produce both window glass and bottles in Millville, New Jersey. The families were devout Quakers and refused to produce liquor bottles; they were most famous for colorless “flint” glass apothecary bottles. In 1857 the company, which produced the bottle found in the Napa River, was named Whitall Tatum and Company.

Beginning in 1806, at the first Glasshouses in Millville, bottles were still completely hand blown as they had been for centuries. A workman gathered a globe of glass at the end of a hollow rod; he next smoothed it by rolling it over a flat, metal plate or stone, meanwhile blowing into the rod to form a bubble of the molten glass. Finally, he shaped the bottle by swinging and swirling his blow pipe. Such hand-blown bottles were produced in fairly large quantities by Whitall Tatum and other companies up until the Civil War. The name Whitall & Tatum and Co. was used from 1857 to 1901.Flint (clear) glass bottles that were embossed with Company name and decorative design likely came after 1862. In 1861, Dr. Boynton was elected County Coroner, and in 1869 he was elected County Supervisor of District 1, serving Napa and Lake Counties for three years. He died on June 19, 1876, aged 53. He is buried at Tulocay Cemetery. The Corning Journal, New York - June 29, 1876: We have received from Miss R. M. Stacey, now of Napa, California, a copy of the Napa Daily Register, in which is announced the death of Dr. Edwin N.

“The role of the pharmacist then included preparing and dispensing remedies and counseling patients.” Boynton, formerly of Elmira. He was one of our near friends. He was a son of Dr. Nathan Boynton, deceased, of Elmira. He left for California twenty-seven years ago. He was a very skillful physician and surgeon, but mainly relinquished the practice, and became a druggist at Napa City twenty years ago, but his eminent skill made him to be often called in counsel. He was at Elmira on a visit in 1869. We have only time now to say that he was one of the most amiable and genial men of our acquaintance, beloved by intimate friends, and esteemed by all who knew him. Winifred Morrison Boynton lived almost a half century longer and passed away in l920. Their eight children, two of whom died in childhood, included Winnie M Boynton 1861-1878, Edwin A Boynton 1862-1932, John Morrison Boynton 1865-1929, Harry L Boynton 1865-1876, Ella Sarah Boynton 1868-1958, Charles S Boynton 1870-1909, Lillian Emily Boynton 1871-1954, and Daisy M Boynton 1872-1955. Dr. Boynton’s bottle would have remained in the Napa River if not fished out by Sara Courtney. Lauren Coodley was entering kindergarten when his daughter Daisy died. History is so easily lost in the slipstream; thanks to Sara Courtney for restoring some of Napa’s past. The Pollyanna Valley exhibition will be on display through February 25, 2024. Napa Valley Museum 55 Presidents Cir. Yountville Wednesdays - Sundays 10am to 4 pm napavalleymuseum.org By Kathleen Reynolds

In the year 1959, the voices of Bobby Darin and Frankie Avalon crooned from the jukebox, Alaska and Hawaii became states, Maverick and Rawhide were required TV viewing. Cinched waists and flared dresses adorned the ladies while the men tooled through town in their shiny Ford Fairlanes or Galaxies; Chevrolets introduced batwings. That July was hot, with drought conditions in the area. In St. Helena, though, the year was 1912. The train station welcomed a steam locomotive, luggage was unloaded from the train onto horseless carriages and women carried parasols and wore largebrimmed hats to shield them from the sun. A young girl alighted from the train as steam from the engine billowed around her.

The girl was Hayley Mills. Disney’s production of Pollyanna had started filming in St. Helena. The newest exhibition at the Napa Valley Museum in Yountville, Pollyanna Valley, celebrates Hollywood arriving in the Napa and Sonoma valleys to shoot exterior scenes for Pollyanna; the movie released in 1960. Other stars of the film were Jane Wyman, Richard Egan, Agnes Moorehead, Karl Malden and child actor Kevin Corcoran. While clips from the film play on a continuous loop at the exhibit, guests can peruse still shots from the movie, a Pollyanna doll and other mementoes from that time. Through close ties with the Disney museum at the Presidio in San Francisco, the Napa Valley Museum’s Executive Director Laura Rafaty was able to secure permission for the displays. “I’ve wanted to do this for a long time,” says Rafaty, whose favorite Hayley Mills’s film is Parent Trap. “What takes the longest is getting all the permissions to display items such as the still photos and video clips. It took years largely because we started during Covid shutdowns and it took some time for everyone to respond to everything, but it was worth the wait.” The relationship with the Disney museum and the Napa Valley Museum dates to the 2018 exhibit of Disney trains. Rafaty recognized a friend in her law school’s alumni magazine and got in touch. That friend introduced her to Diane Disney Miller, the elder daughter of Walt Disney, and a collaboration soon began. “A lot of people either adore Hayley Mills or don’t know who she is. We hope this exhibit will let those folks either remember her or find out what they were missing. The term ‘Pollyanna’ is often used in a derogatory way about someone who is eternally optimistic. I don’t feel that way. Looking at things through ‘rose-colored glasses’ is

POLLYANNA TRIVIA according to online source Internet Movie Database IMDb:

Writer and director David Swift wanted to trim this movie by about twenty minutes and rearrange some scenes (most notably the acquisition of the doll in the town bazaar sequence). But producer Walt Disney, who had fallen in love with this movie by watching the dailies, would not allow it, and Swift did not have final-cut privileges.

Hayley Mills was awarded a special juvenile Oscar for her role in the film. This would be the last juvenile Oscar awarded. She was not present to accept the award, so Annette Funicello accepted it for her. Her father, i.e Sir John Mills, would not pull her out of school for the event. Hayley Mills told Entertainment Weekly in 2018 that she had no idea she’d won an Oscar until it arrived on her doorstep. She also had no idea the 1961 ceremony was being held or that she had been nominated.

According to writer and director David Swift, after looking at 362 girls for the part of Pollyanna, they still did not have anyone to play the part. One day, producer Walt Disney’s wife Lilly went shopping with Disney studio head Bill Anderson’s wife while they were in London, England, on business. The two ladies saw Hayley Mills in Tiger Bay (1959) and thought she was perfect for the role of Pollyanna. The two men didn’t listen to them, but they were so persistent that the men finally agreed to watch the movie and immediately decided to cast Hayley.

not without its uses. It’s a positive thing to look for good in people; it’s not being unreasonably positive.” “I think the display will resonate with moms and daughters. Boys will like the movie, too, especially scenes where co-star Kevin Cocoran is swimming and playing in the creek. I think it will remind boys of a time when they were free to swim in the local creeks and rivers, fishing and hunting for frogs. So many of my neighbors in St. Helena tell me that they recall being here in the 50’s and long for a simpler, more innocent time. I think this exhibition will remind them of those days.” December 2023

adapt Eleanor Porter’s novel Pollyanna into a liveaction feature film, he needed to find the perfect location for Harrington, the turn of the century town that Pollyanna would forever transform into “the glad town.” Walt found the rural charm he was looking for in the city of Santa Rosa, California, and in the surrounding countryside of the idyllic Sonoma and Napa Valleys. In July of 1959, the Pollyanna cast and crew members made the 500-mile trek north from the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank to the San Francisco Bay Area to begin the two months of on location filming.”

“Napa Valley in 1959 was a perfect stand-in for oldtime small-town American living,” she said. From Joseph Titizian’s 2012 magazine article Walt and Wine Country: On Location with Walt from Disney Productions: “When Walt Disney decided to

Among the Napa spots used for the fictional Harrington were the Sulphur Spring Railroad trestle at the entrance to St. Helena, the Bale Grist Mill, the Manor House at Stag’s Leap Winery and the St. Helena train depot. The number 94 locomotive used in this movie is intact and on display at the Western Railway Museum in Suisun City.

People familiar with Santa Rosa may recognize the 1877 McDonald mansion as the home of Aunt Polly. While the mansion, now known as Mableton, is two stories, the production needed the home to be larger. Through the talents of Disney matte painter Peter Ellenshaw, the home became three stories for the movie. The tree Pollyanna climbs was brought to Santa Rosa for the shoot and transported back to the studio for close shots when the location filming was finished. More movie magic was used when a pond needed for the shoot had to be filled by the local fire department because of the drought. “Pollyanna Valley” is presented in collaboration with The Walt Disney Family Museum with text by Disney historian Joseph Titizian, curated by Bri Bertolaccini with Joel Kurtz. were provided by the Walt Disney Archives Photo Library. As Titizian writes in Walt and Wine Country: “In the decades since the filming of Pollyanna, much has changed as the Sonoma and Napa Valleys have evolved into internationally renowned winemaking regions and Santa Rosa has grown into a bustling city, but the simple beauty, charm, and community spirit found in the fictional town of Harrington live on in Pollyanna. Walt Disney’s film has become a family classic beloved around the world and reminds all of us to look for the good in life and to be glad.” The Pollyanna Valley exhibition will be on display through February 25, 2024. An exhibition-themed event will be scheduled in the holiday season. Admission to the History Gallery includes the Museum’s other current exhibitions: Tiki Dreams: From Far-Away Fantasy to Pop-Culture Phenomenon. This immersive exhibition, curated by Baby Doe and Otto von Stroheim of Tiki Oasis, illustrates how California’s iconic tiki lounges and restaurants, including many in the Bay Area, inspired a global art and design movement; and Napa Valley Museum Mini-Masterpieces, featuring original works for sale to benefit the museum’s nonprofit arts education programs. Both these exhibits are scheduled to end December 31. The Napa Valley Museum Yountville is located at 55 Presidents Circle in Yountville and is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 10am to 4pm; closed major holidays.
