WINSTON’S Cafe & Bakery by Craig Smith

Winston’s Cafe & Bakery, located at 1317 Third Street in Downtown Napa, opened in February of last year for breakfast and brunch, and it’s been a hit with locals since the first customers walked in. The food is fantastic, which mostly explains the popularity, but it also has a strong community vibe that makes diners want to come back. “Community was important to me when we first started talking about opening a restaurant,” said owner Alex Macaraig, “but I didn’t know just how powerful and important would prove to be.” Alex grew up in Napa. “We want this to be a wholesome place. We’re trying to do the right things the right way, always striving for good food at a reasonable price.” Opening his own restaurant has been Macaraig’s goal for years. “We’ve been together

fora decade,” said wife and Winston’s co-owner Cassan, while holding their new-born daughter Aeva. “And he always talked about his own restaurant.” That it would be a café focusing on baked goods and breakfast wasn’t even that important. Fortunately for diners, that part fell into place nicely. Macaraig was a chef at Miminashi were Paul Brown frequented as a patron. Paul was operating Paulie’s Bagels and looking for an opportunity to expand his bagel following. It was very popular, but he didn’t have enough space to bake all that he could have sold. In a selfless act, Curtis De Fede, Miminashi chef and owner, suggested the two chefs move on and go into business together, even though it would cost Miminashi a chef. “We wouldn’t be here without Paul,” said Alex. “We literally sell out of his baked goods every day.” Paul will probably always be known for his bagels, arguably some of the best in the Valley, but the other twenty baked offerings at Winston’s – including scones, donuts, sticky buns and chocolate chip cookies – are just as in demand.

Winton’s Owners Alex & Cassan Macaraig

Asked why they don’t just make more of everything so they don’t always sell out, Alex is quick to answer, “Everything is made by hand. We try to keep the passion in it.” The all-day menu ranges from sandwiches to traditional breakfast foods: a variety of prepared bagels and egg-based entrees, salads, burgers, even spam sandwiches and lumpia. Customers love their Eggs Benedict and Huevos Rancheros, and lately they’ve been serving rice bowls. Alex and Cassan are an engaging couple, each with an easy laugh and relaxed conversational style. They met in San Diego, where both were working. Alex wanted to move back to Napa, and once a wedding was on the horizon, they did so. COVID forced postponing their June 2020 wedding to August, then September. Their son Arlo couldn’t wait

that long – the couple got pregnant with him in September. “We had a shot-gun wedding in October,” laughed Cassan. She was pregnant again shortly after Winston’s (named after their rescue pit bull mix) opened. Customers fawned over Cassan during her pregnancy with Aeva. “I told everybody I was going to be out of the restaurant for a while after she was born, and they wouldn’t hear of it. ‘No, you have to bring her in.’ So, here she is,” Cassan said, looking at her daughter with a smile. The Macaraig’s are humble people, yet proud of their restaurant. The wholesale bakery business has grown beyond their initial expectations. “Paul’s potato buns are in a lot of local restaurants,” said Alex. There have been learning curves. “The back of the house, where I’ve always been as a chef, is different than the front,” said Alex. He watches people as they walk in the door, and likes that they seem comfortable. There are more plans on the horizon, but the couple laughs when asked for specifics. “You mean besides running Winston’s and raising

two small children?” said Cassan. Still, they have experimented with operating a pop up at night. “On weekends, we could open for dinner, maybe serving Filipino food one night and something else the next.” Alex laughs, seeming to have caught himself getting too far out there. “There’s time for all that. Whatever we do, we want to do it right.”

WHAT IS

INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE? by Kathleen Reynolds

Newer medical terms can be confusing. Do the words “integrative,” “alternative,” “complementary,” “natural,” “functional” and “holistic” mean separate things or are they interchangeable? Let’s look at the first term, “integrative.” The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) defines “integrative medicine” as “the treatment of patients through spiritual, emotional, mental, and environmental in addition to the physical means, while still being rooted in scientific discovery and inquiry.” The general principle is that all aspects of the patient are considered in the treatment plan to optimize health and treat illness.

Treatment strategies utilize natural and less invasive alternatives when possible but combine this with conventional therapies as needed. The patient and health care provider form a partnership that allows for a holistic approach, with the goal of overall wellness for body and mind. Specific techniques can include lifestyle advice, including nutrition and exercise programs, specific nutritional supplements, herbal medicines, acupuncture, mindbody and stress management therapies, chiropractic, massage and other bodywork, and the use of restorative hormones when indicated. Napa has several integrative professionals. We asked one of them, Wendy Pomerantz, L.Ac, PA-C, to help us sort out what that means. She has practiced since 1978 with a focus on integrative medicine since 1991. She is licensed both as a PA-C (Physician Associate Certified, previously known as “Physician Assistant”) and L.Ac (Licensed

“In my practice I look at your health history and medications, lifestyle and food choices, sleep quality, ability to handle stress, level of physical activity, family history and genetics” — Wendy Pomerantz, L.Ac, P.A.-C.

Acupuncturist). As a PA-C she can write prescriptions under the medical practice umbrella of a physician. She splits her clinic time between Napa and Sacramento. “Integrative, holistic, nutrientoriented and functional medicine are terms that basically mean using all the tools we have to treat each unique person. Patients often come because they have problems that have not been fully addressed elsewhere: fatigue, digestive issues, menstrual problems, brain fog, chronic pain, or they just “don’t feel right.”’ “In my practice I look at your health history and medications, lifestyle and food choices, sleep quality, ability to handle stress, level of physical activity, family history and genetics. I also discuss ‘epigenetics,’ which is a term that refers to factors outside of genetics that can influence the expression of your genes. Patient evaluations start with taking an extensive history, and may include comprehensive blood tests, physical exams, functional intestinal health assessments and more.” “My biggest focus right now is using bio-identical hormone therapy. Our hormone levels can get depleted or go out of balance due to age, stress, illness, medications, environmental and lifestyle factors. I mainly treat women in menopause, though

I also treat men as they also go through age-related hormonal changes. I have found nothing as powerful as this therapy to restore physical and mental wellbeing, especially as part of a comprehensive health plan.” According to the Cleveland Clinic, “Hormones are chemicals made by your endocrine glands. They are messengers that tell other parts of your body how and when to work.” “Bio-identical” hormones refer to substances that match human hormones on a molecular level and are therefore an exact mimic of the originals,” says Wendy. “They are derived from plant bases and have been available since the late 1930s. Our bodies recognize and can easily process these hormones, because their structure is the same as the hormones we produced earlier in life.” Hormone loss in menopause in women typically leads to symptoms of hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbance, loss of libido and moisture, depression and anxiety, joint pain and stiffness. Behind the scenes, bones lose support and decline in density, arteries tend to become stiffer, and mental clarity can decline. In men hormone decline can result in of loss of vitality and muscle, loss of mental clarity and sexual dysfunction.

“Many of my female patients come to me when they’ve reached menopause and aren’t getting what they need from their practitioners. They complain that they don’t feel listened to, feel dismissed and ignored. Practitioners are often rushed or misinformed and afraid of hormone therapy,” says Wendy. “Most medical practices, especially when part of large institutions, have time constraints, and even the best-intentioned doctors must work within those constraints. In contrast, the first visit with me is a one-hour consultation. This allows enough time to look in-depth at the person’s history, triggers and influences. Followup appointments are usually half an hour. I see patients every 2 to 3 months at first, then when they’re stable, every six to twelve months.” “Primary care providers order lab tests, but I usually go into more depth: in addition to basic chemistries, I usually check sex hormone and thyroid levels, markers of autoimmunity, certain vitamin levels and bone turnover markers as indicated. I’ll then use that information to guide people about what they need to do to address symptoms but also for the long term to increase their ‘healthspan’ and decrease sick time. The goal is to stay healthy for as long as possible, although personally I don’t like the term ‘anti-aging.’”

Celebrate our 8th Anniversary The NCCIH reports, “Integrative health aims for well-coordinated care among different providers and institutions by bringing conventional and complementary approaches together to care for the whole person.” Wendy agrees. “I don’t provide acute care; it’s better to have a regular physician for that. I do wellness care. I don’t do emergencies and I’m not affiliated with a hospital. I also don’t treat serious chronic Lyme disease, because those patients are better served by specialists who have more in-depth knowledge of the subject.” “The term ‘alternative medicine’ causes a misconception. If the word ‘alternative’ is used, we get painted with the same brush as every other practitioner. People ask me if I’m like the Naturopath who was printing false vaccine cards. I’m not antivax, I focus on nutrition and lifestyle needs. I’m not a dietician, I give general information on nutrition and vitamins.” What has been Wendy’s experience with conventional physicians? “I’ve seen medical practitioners hungry for this knowledge.” “The idea is that I’m at patients’ service to keep them healthy. I can suggest, but not to beat them up over what they eat or drink. Integrative medicine involves collaborating with people to stay healthy. I can help optimize what your body can do for you. Patients can take prescription drugs, but also have healthy practices.” “You are better off being motivated than coming in thinking there’s a quick answer. There’s ‘no magic bullet’ which will fix every problem and patients need to be an advocate for their own healthcare.”

TOYS FO R TOTS

Providing Hope and Happiness to Children for Over 75 Years by Kathleen Reynolds

Remember the tickle of expectation on Christmas morning when you peeked to see what anticipated toy was under the tree? For literally thousands of kids in Napa County, though, that excitement is mixed with the nagging knowledge that their parents can’t afford groceries, or that they’re sleeping in the family car. For them, there will be no toy this year. For 76 years, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program has sought those disadvantaged children so that they, too, can have a new toy to brighten their holiday season. “Last year, we collected 13,342 toys and supported 3,000 children in Napa Valley, and we are hoping to do even better this year,” says Kristofer

Chun, leader of the 2023 Toys for Tots campaign in Napa, in an email. The history of Toys for Tots program began in 1947, when Marine Reserve Major Bill Hendricks created the program with his wife in the Los Angeles area. His friend Walt Disney designed the train logo the following year and the program expanded nationally.

Program also provides year-round support to families experiencing challenges and exceptional circumstances, thus helping to fulfill the hopes and dreams of millions of families and children in need.

Since its founding, Marines and volunteers have distributed 627 million toys to over 281 million children. In 2021, Toys for Tots distributed a record 22.4 million toys to nearly 8.8 million less-fortunate children in America.

Napa’s Marine Corps Toys for Tots organization partners with many other not-for-profit agencies throughout the Napa Valley to determine which families need help during the holiday season. The national group does not take toy requests directly, but if you know of a child in need, Napa’s Salvation Army usually has information and applications in October every year.

People may not realize that the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots

The most familiar way to donate is to bring a new, unwrapped toy to one of

You can donate funds online or choose an item from their virtual toybox. More ways to contribute include peer-to-peer fundraising, donating through PayPal, having a holiday recognition program for your clients, giving in honor of someone and making a vehicle, stock or even cryptocurrency donation. If you prefer the traditional way of donating your children enjoy picking out a toy for an unfortunate child, Kristofer says there are many local opportunities to give. “This year in Napa, we will be dropping off boxes the first week of November to nearly 100 locations from American Canyon to Calistoga,” he says.

“The final pick-up of toys and the boxes will be between December 5-9. However, we will accept donation at the firehouses in Napa until Christmas.” For this Toys for Tots diamond anniversary, why not start or continue a tradition of giving to a needy child to brighten their holiday? Last year, Napa’s Holiday Assistance Program with the support of the Marine Corps Toys for Tots and the Salvation Army, fulfilled the holiday wishes and dreams of over 3,000 children here in Napa with over 12,000 toys! Since its inception in 1947, this the Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign has distributed over 604 million toys to over 272 million children across the United States. Toys for Tots, a 76-year national charitable program run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, provides happiness and hope to less fortunate children during each Christmas holiday season.

The toys, books, and other gifts collected and distributed by our Marines and volunteers during the Christmas season offer these children recognition, confidence, and a positive memory for a lifetime. As the holiday season approaches, there’s no better time to ignite the spirit of generosity and spread joy throughout our communities. We invite you to be a part of this heartwarming journey that has the power to make a significant difference in the lives of children in need, including those who are unhoused, in foster care, or have parents who are incarcerated. If you or you know of a family that could benefit from our program, the Salvation Army is doing two in-person application events. October 13th from 3-7pm and October 21st from 10am-2pm. The joy of giving is immeasurable, and it multiplies when we come together as a community. Thank you for your unwavering support, and together, let’s make this holiday season a truly magical one for every child. Remember, the true magic of the season lies in giving.

Hometown Christmas Traditions by Craig Smith

Picking a theme for this year’s Napa Christmas parade was easy. “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of The Year” is a sentiment that any child would embrace.

The Christmas celebrations begin with the annual Christmas Tree Lighting in Veterans Park. Wednesday, November 22nd at 6 p.m., Mayor Scott Sedgley will lead the community in a countdown to light the tree. Boy scouts will be on-hand giving out free cookies, provided by Sweetie Pie’s. Hot chocolate will be donated by Downtown Joes. Entertainment will come from local children’s groups, who will dance and sing before the Mayor leads the countdown to light the tree. And speaking of trees, Wanderland of Trees returns in December. Check DoNapa.com for the list of businesses that will be decorating trees, whether large or small, and vote for your favorite. Heck, vote for as many as you want. Every vote will earn the chance to win $300 or $100 in a drawing.

36

napavalleymarketplace.com

November 2023

The Christmas parade is Saturday, December 9th at 5 p.m. Three cash awards of $500 each will be given to the Kiwanian parade judges’ choices in three categories: Best Use of Lights, Best Theme-Oriented, and Best Use of Music. Anyone can enter the parade, and it’s free. Napa’s Christmas Parade is a hometown tradition that has grown over the years.

Welcome Center will have plenty of hot chocolate on hand for everyone. All the little ones have to do is bring their wish list and tell Santa what they want. Santa will do his best to fill all those requests.

The parade begins on Second Street at School, heads east on Second to Brown, then north to Third, and finally west back to School Street. Judging takes place on Third Street in front of the courthouse, across from the Second Street garage. All groups are recognized and introduced at the stage.

The Kiwanis Club of Napa helps with parade set-up, emcee and judging for awards. And a special shout out goes to the staff and elected officials of the City of Napa. Most of what they do is largely unseen – planning to make sure the event is safe, road closures and overseeing closed intersections during the parade and clean up. Sponsors include the Bank of Marin, City of Napa, Napa Valley Marketplace Magazine and Downtown Napa Association.

Old Saint Nick will set up shop in the lobby of the Welcome Center near the corner of First and Randolph Street this year, as soon as he wraps up the Christmas parade, probably about 6:30 p.m. He’ll bring a staff of Elves who will pass out candy canes, and

Grand Marshal this year is Napa Police Chief Jennifer Gonzales. Join her and her family as they great all parade onlookers.

Everything is free. Parade applications can be found at DoNapa.com or by calling 257-0322.

MEGAN DOMINICI

A HEART FOR SERVICE by Kathleen Reynolds

S

Sophie Dominici was in fifth grade when she saw someone on television talking about throwing birthday parties for homeless children. “That’s cool; we should do that,” Sophia told her mother. Most harried moms would probably smile and say something non-committal. But Sophia’s mother is Megan Dominici. Professionally, Megan is the Director of Outreach for JustinSiena High School. Her life is devoted to helping others.

“Service has always been a part of our lives,” says Megan of her family: her husband, Jason and children Nick and Sophia. “Our family likes to be of service, especially to kids. Acting on Sophia’s suggestion, I reached out to someone at what was then called the Samaritan House that sheltered families experiencing homelessness. I asked if they’d be interested in us organizing birthday parties for the children

there. They said yes and so we started.” The “we” Megan refers to is the nonprofit organization she founded in 2015, the GIGG (the God is Good Group). The GIGG has as its mission, “To inspire and empower community through active leadership & service to others.” She is the Executive Director. “For years I ran a youth group who loved to serve the community. Through them, it was easy to get people interested in hosting and decorating the birthday parties. We go to different locations and set everything up, decorate and sneak out. We’d leave the wrapped gifts, which allowed the parents to throw them a party. We coordinate with Abode Services, Napa County and Catholic Charities to let us know the particulars of each child. With the continued support of our Youth Ministry friends, their families, and so many new connections, we continue to host these birthday parties today.” The group doesn’t keep track of how many parties it has facilitated,

but Megan believes it’s in the hundreds. Sophia is now a Junior at Justin-Siena and continues to take the lead. “We’ve done parties for kids from one-year-old to 18. For the older kids, it was usually a dinner somewhere. Initially, COVID halted that, but we knew that homeless kids still had birthdays, so we literally put everything in a bag and dropped it off.” The Savage (Megan’s maiden name) family’s community involvement spans decades. In 2004, Megan’s 22-year-old brother, Patrick Savage, died in an alcohol related car accident. He was the only boy in a family of six girls. His family set up the Patrick Savage Memorial Corporation to bring awareness to the dangers of drinking and driving and to keep his memory alive. Patrick had been the student body president at Justin Siena in 2000 and was active in the Leadership Club. The Memorial Corporation keeps Patrick’s commitment to leadership and love for service at the center of what it does, along

with continuing to educate on the dangers of drinking and driving. Megan explained that the idea of the GIGG came up to grow and develop a service group as part of the Memorial Corporation. She reached out to some of her former Youth Ministry Alumni and had a positive response of interest and excitement. The group continues to grow with people of all ages throughout the community looking to be of service and to learn leadership skills. To that end, the GIGG developed a leadership development group. Her son, Nick’s interest in young leaders inspired the Youth Leadership Academy of Napa. It focuses on growing leaders in our community through service for Napa County School students in 6th, 7th or 8th grade. It helps students to boost their self-esteem, improve communication skills, identify their strengths and weaknesses and develop organizational skills while teaching them to work with others. The service work of Megan and her

teams of volunteers doesn’t stop at birthday parties. The GIGG organization has also helped to start the Better Together Prom for students with special needs, helps annually with Napa Grad Night and organizes a local Relay for Life. They respond regularly to various service organizations in town that need volunteers and support. “For the last couple of years, we have hosted Relay for Life at JustinSiena in partnership with our other local high schools,” says Megan. “This last year it was Napa High, Vintage and Justin-Siena, three schools working together for one cause. We walked for a Napa High graduate who is battling cancer. I love it when the high schools come together—it’s my favorite thing.” The Patrick Savage Memorial Corporation also creates scholarships. For years, the Savage Family has held an annual Memorial Card Tournament fundraiser to support the scholarships and various projects.

“We play a game my family played, called 99. Most people don’t know anything about it their first time, so we explain the rules of the game and how it’s played. We have regulars who participate, like City Manager Steve Potter, and several council members. Over the years, we have benefitted from the sponsorship of our local law enforcement: the Napa Police Officers Association, the Napa Sheriff’s Department and the California Highway Patrol, as well as our Napa Fire Department. It’s a lot of fun and has gotten quite competitive. The Tournament is always held the first Saturday after New Year. It’s a sober event, with no alcohol served. It’s a blast.” Last year, some of the funds went to support the “Every 15 Minutes” Mock Drinking and Driving Car Accident that Justin-Siena hosted with the CHP. The Dominici family suffered another tragedy in 2019, the loss of their six-year-old child, Addie, who died when a stack of heavy chairs fell on her. Megan explains how the family survived the unimaginable heartbreak. “We were so loved upon after the accident by friends, neighbors and community members we did not even know. I found myself saying that God must have known how weak I was, so He made sure to smother me with love. Addie was in the middle of all that we did, from service to leadership. I think her memory in it all helps us to keep doing what we do.” “Giving back to the community that gave so much to us was natural.”

“My advice to anyone who wants to start something new is to talk to people. It’s all about making connections. Don’t be afraid to pull people together because we are truly ‘Better Together.’” “There’s a need for service in this world and I just love it when we can all come together to do it. When we serve others, we most certainly feel better about ourselves.” To volunteer or learn more about the GIGG, email Megan at megandominici@gmail.com.

Cold and f lu season is here AND WE ARE, TOO. This season, protect yourself and those around you by getting your family their flu and pneumonia vaccines. Getting your annual shot is your best bet for avoiding the flu. Most adults and children as young as six months old can get their flu vaccine. If you haven’t gotten you a pneumonia vaccine shot in the last 10 years, you should consider getting that updated at the same time you get your flu shot.

CALL YOUR PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN’S OFFICE TODAY TO SCHEDULE A FLU SHOT APPOINTMENT.
