Takin’ Food to the Streets Takin’ Food to the Streets

TAKIN’ FOOD TO THE STREETS will be funded by a series of cooking marathons at Megna’s food truck, Asian Flavors by TJ Dim Sum. He’s inviting some of Napa’s best-known names to show off their culinary prowess, bringing their specialties to l an Asian twist.

Family, friends and fans will place their orders in advance. Celebrity guest chefs will have their hands full, cooking the meals onsite assisted by the TJ Dim Sumteam. Diners will pick up their feasts at an appointed time, with the proceeds split 25% to cover food cost and 75% going to the program.

TAKIN’ FOOD TO THE STREETS will gather a consortium of food trucks every other week to feed those in need at locations approved by local authorities. The initial target is 150 meals per gathering, increasing to more than 500 per by the end of the year.

If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Thomas at thomas@tjdimsum.com You can follow them at @tjdimsum on Facebook and Instagram

Enhancing Your Quality of Life through Targeted Interventional Pain Management

ON THE COVER

Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS): SCS involves implanting a small device that delivers electrical pulses to the spinal cord. These pulses interfere with pain signals, relieving conditions like failed back surgery syndrome or complexregional pain syndrome. SCS not only diminishes pain but also enhances patients’ quality of life by improving their ability to participate in physical and social activities.

Benefits of Targeted Interventional Pain Management

Reduced Reliance on Medications: One of the critical advantages of targeted interventional pain management is its potential to reduce the need for long-term medication use. This is especially important given the potential side effects and risks of certain pain medications, such as opioids. Patients can rely less on drugs by directly addressing the source of pain, minimizing the risk of dependency and adverse reactions.

Improved Physical Function: Chronic pain often limits patients’ ability to move and engage in physical activities. Targeted interventions can alleviate pain, allowing patients to participate in exercises and therapies that promote physical rehabilitation. This improved mobility enhances patients’ physical wellbeing and positively impacts their mental health and self-esteem.

Enhanced Psychological Well-being: Chronic pain can lead to depression, anxiety, and other psychological issues. Targeted interventional pain management can break the cycle of pain and negative emotions by offering effective relief. As pain diminishes, patients experience improved mood, reduced stress, and a better outlook on life.

Faster Recovery: Unlike major surgical interventions, interventional pain management procedures are minimally invasive and often require shorter recovery periods. This means patients can experience significant pain relief without the prolonged downtime associated with more invasive treatments, enabling them to return to their daily routines and responsibilities more quickly.

Targeted interventional pain management represents a paradigm shift in the approach to chronic pain treatment. By directly addressing the root causes of pain, these techniques offer patients a chance to regain control over their lives, improve their physical function, and enhance their psychological well-being. The reduction in reliance on medications, coupled with the potential for long-lasting pain relief, makes

EEvery year around the harvest, artists in Napa Valley join together to present their artworks. Open Studios Napa Valley is a free, self-guided, art discovery tour that takes place over two weekends every September. This year, for 2023, 70 participating artists share their artworks with visitors from all over the United States.

Whether you’re an avid collector or just curious about art, this is an opportunity to see the creative talent of Napa Valley, meet the artists, watch demonstrations and buy local art right from the source!

Open Studios Napa Valley is committed to bringing you the best Open Studios event ever! The program exists today because the artists believe in the importance and value of opening their studios to visitors and sharing a unique artistic experience.

Read the Constitution It Wi’ll Surprise You!

When you think of the U.S. Constitution, do you picture a bulky, cumbersome tome, laden with obscure words?

The Constitution of the United States is only four pages and the original is on continuous display in the National Archives. For Constitution Week (September 17-23, 2023), a copy will be displayed in the front window of the Napa County Historical Society Goodwin Library on First Street in Napa, courtesy of the Vineyard Trails Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

22 napavalleymarketplace.com September 2023
“It’s surprising to many people to hear that the United States isn’t a Democracy but is a Democratic Republic.”
~ Dana Baumgardner

“The week is commemorated on September 17, when the US Constitution was first signed in 1787,” writes Margaret Beaubien, DAR Vineyard Trails Chapter Regent, in an email. “It also recognizes those who have become US citizens. Many areas of the country hold mass naturalizations on the 17th as well.”

While written in 1787, the Constitution wasn’t official until 1788, when all nine states had ratified it. Our Constitution is the shortest and the oldest of any in the world.

“It’s surprising to many people to hear that the United States isn’t a Democracy but is a Democratic Republic,” says Dana Baumgardner, Vineyard Trails Chapter member and treasurer. “That’s why we don’t vote directly, but select representatives to vote, the Electoral College. It’s an important document to read.”

“The Constitution is not huge, unlike the Tax Code or Amendments. I have a copy that’s on a single 20” x 17” sheet and I’ve seen wallet sized copies. The only huge thing is that it gives us so much information and understanding about our day-to-day lives.”

On September 17, the Vineyard Trails chapter will also bring Bells Across America to Napa, an annual celebration of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. Participants gather

to ring bells, much as the church bells of Philadelphia rang out when the U.S. Constitution was first signed on September 17, 1787. To herald the beginning of Constitution Week, Vineyard Trails has asked several churches in the area to ring their bells for one minute at 1 p.m. on September 17. They will read a Proclamation from the City of Napa, provide small bells for participants to ring, and hand out copies of the Preamble to the Constitution, it also will be at the Goodman Library building.

“People should keep in mind that the Constitution is not perfect,” Dana says.

“We may not have reached the goals written, but we aspire to them and see what we can do to get there. I was unhappy to read that Civics is no longer taught in high schools in many areas. If young people don’t learn their responsibilities, they won’t know how to be part of society.”

The Vineyard Trails chapter of the DAR has 77 members and meets the third Saturday of the month in person at the Napa Senior Center.

“We have different speakers on multiple subjects every month,” says Dana. “Amelia Ceja spoke to us about coming to Napa and eventually opening a winery. We had a former guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier talk about what he learned from his experience. We had a speaker who had been in the Ukraine discuss the humanitarian crisis. We also have fun. For our last meeting, one of our members

wrote a play about the Constitution and members had parts; one played Benjamin Franklin. We’re a congenial group.”

If you attended Napa’s Fourth of July parade, you saw the Vineyard Trails DAR float.

“We enacted characters in a book called ‘A Girl Called Samson,’ about a woman pretending to be a man to fight in the Revolutionary War. She was successful and even got a pension for her work. We got that book from the State Librarian and had it as a members’ book club selection.”

The three pillars of the DAR are education, patriotism and service to veterans. The Vineyard Trails chapter is busy with many civic activities.

They donate and help lay wreaths at the graves of veterans buried at the Sacramento Valley Veterans National Cemetery in Dixon and the California Veterans Home in Yountville during the annual national Wreaths Across America event in December. This place

in cemeteries across the country including the Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC.

The group gives gifts and cards to veterans at Christmas time as well as volunteering with assistance on various projects there, honor high school seniors with DAR Good Citizens Awards, sponsor Boy Scout Projects, conduct official flag burning ceremonies for unserviceable flags, participate in Operation Love from Home organizing boxes of personal supplies to deployed troops and many more activities.

Announces Their 2023-2024 Season

We’re so happy to bring you another exciting season of musicals and plays in our special black box theatre. It’s our 15th season of producing shows in Napa Valley, and we think the season ahead is a solid winner. We look forward to seeing you at the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY MUSICAL

September 8 – 24, 2023

Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family—a man her parents have never met. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before—keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents. “The Addams Family Musical” is a comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family!

THE REVOLUTIONISTS

Oct. 20 – Nov. 5, 2023

Four beautiful, badass women lose their heads in this irreverent, girl-powered comedy set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. Playwright Olympe de Gouges, assassin Charlotte Corday, former queen (and fan of ribbons) Marie Antoinette, and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle hang out, murder Marat, and try to beat back the extremist insanity in 1793 Paris. This grand and dream-tweaked comedy is about violence and legacy, art and activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and chosen sisters, and how we actually go about changing the world. It’s a true story. Or total fiction. Or a play about a play. Or a raucous resurrection…that ends in a song and a scaffold.

THE GREAT AMERICAN TRAILER

PARK CHRISTMAS

December 1 – 17, 2023

MUSICAL

It’s holiday time down in Armadillo Acres (North Florida’s premier mobile-living community), and everyone’s filled with warmth and beer. But when a freak bout of amnesia strikes the trailer park Scrooge, neighborly love is put to the test. Be on hand as Betty, Lin, and Pickles jingle all the way with some new neighbors in an all-new, all-trailerpark musical! This companion to the original “Great American Trailer Park Musical” is just as much of a cat-fightin’, sun-worshippin’, chair-throwin’ good time—but with tinsel and Keg Nog.

SAVING SANTA 2023

December 2 – 23, 2023

What happens when Santa’s sleigh has a hard landing on Mt. St. Helena on Christmas Eve? Can a frantic elf get help from the people of Napa Valley to save Santa and save Christmas?

“Saving Santa” features new original songs by Rob Broadhurst with a book by Barry Martin, inspired by a story idea from Taylor Bartolucci. This oneact show with a running time of around one hour premiered in December 2022 and returns for more music and laughs this Christmas season. We hope to see the theatre packed with kids and their families once again!

ALMOST, MAINE

Jan. 26 – Feb. 11, 2024

In the town of Almost, Maine, people experience the life-altering power of the human heart. In a series of playful and surreal experiences, relationships end, begin, or change beyond recognition, as strangers become friends, friends become lovers, and lovers turn into strangers.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC

March 8 – 24, 2024

One of the most beloved musicals of all time, “The Sound of Music” takes place In Austria in 1938. Maria is an exuberant young governess who brings back music and joy to a broken family, only to face danger and intrigue as the Nazis gain power.

THE GLASS MENAGERIE

April 19 – May 5, 2024

No play in the modern theater captured the imagination and heart of the American public as did Tennessee Williams’s “The Glass Menagerie” in 1944. The Wingfield family lives in a dingy, cramped apartment in St. Louis. Amanda Wingfield, her frustrated son Tom, and fragile daughter Laura inhabit a world where a visit from a gentleman caller seems to offer the only hope of redemption not just for Laura but for the whole family. This great play is mid-century American literature at its best.

THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF NAPA VALLEY

May 31 – June 16, 2024

Five “real housewives” are living a famous life in the Napa Valley and beyond. Their reality show is a popular hit—or is it? When the Huzzah Network decides to cancel the show, they embark on a do or die mission to raise the ratings and hang onto their posh lifestyles. The new musical parody is the latest from the writing team of Barry Martin and Rob Broadhurst, creators of Lucky Penny’s musical hits “A Napa Valley Christmas Carol” and “Saving Santa.”

CCompetitive Gardening is a big, big deal. Big, meaning large or giant. Vegetables range from humongous tomatoes at more than 11 pounds, long gourds at 173.75 inches, 350.5-pound watermelons and 14-inch chili peppers.

fellowship and education for all participating growers and weigh-off sites.”

Grove Giant Pumpkin Festival. But there are competitions worldwide.

Most of these competitions are sanctioned by a group called the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth. The mission of this group, according to their website, is to “…cultivate the hobby of growing giant pumpkins and other giant fruits throughout the world by establishing standards and regulations that ensure quality of fruit, fairness of competition, recognition of achievement,

One active Napa member of the GPC is Gary Miller. Born and raised on a farm in Ohio, he’s spent the unfenced part of the site.

“When you’ve experienced farming firsthand, I thought growing giant pumpkins would be a piece of cake,” says Gary. “Boy, was I wrong.”

“I admit to being wrong, though, because that’s how you get good.”

He did better than “good.” He won the 40th Annual Safeway World Championship Pumpkin WeighOff 2013 in Half Moon Bay with

a pumpkin that tipped the scales at 1,985 pounds. This year, he was inducted into the Pumpkin Growers Hall of Fame, the highest honor for folks who grow this amazing fruit—yes, pumpkins are classified as a fruit.

He started growing giant pumpkins

“At the time, I was a landscape designer,” he says. “I received a commission from Mr. and Mrs. Mondavi to grow a pumpkin that was around 500 pounds. I had no idea if I could. But I did and went on to deliver one to them every year afterward.”

The Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas requests about a dozen of his pumpkins annually for display. Each of those averages about

He says there’s no dark secret to growing such behemoths. Good seeds, rich soil and cooperative weather help, but beginners

“Beginners can overcompensate with fertilizer,” he says. “You must check the leaves to determine if you need to fertilize. If so, use it first thing in the morning. You apply a progression from nitrogen, then potassium to potash. Everything I grow is 100% organic.”

The only seed he uses is the Atlantic Giant and he starts them in small pots.

GROWING GIANT PUMPKINS

be crazy!”

“I put them in a cooler that I keep at 85 degrees by using a 15-watt lightbulb. You adjust it if it gets too warm. I’ve learned over the years to vent a corner of the cover to keep a consistent temperature. Planting starts in the vicinity of April 15 and May 1 is the deadline to have them in the ground.”

Then comes tending to the plants. They must be protected from wind, blanketed against the cold, tented for shade when it gets warm and plucked of smaller pumpkins along the vine. Gary says his best advice is to watch the weather all the time.

“What surprises people is that I always water when it rains. We usually get ¼” of rain, that won’t even soak the soil for one inch. So, water in the rain.”

“My pet peeve is the hose sprayer,” says Gary. “They’re a waste of water. You’re moving the soil, not reaching the roots. They’re only good for spraying your kids— or your spouse. Set the hose on low and move it from plant to plant.”

“I tell people to learn as much as they can. That’s what I do. Back when I started, there were very few knowledgeable growers. One couple who mentored me was Pete and Cindy Glasier. They helped me acquire seeds and educated me on the basics of growing these giants. Now there’s the Internet and you can learn about growing for free.”

He’s not optimistic about his chances at this year’s weigh-offs.

“You can set your clock by whoever has the best weather will have the best pumpkin. I don’t have a chance this year mainly because of the wind. But I encourage everyone to enter even if they know they won’t win. Weigh-offs are fundraisers. There’ve been hundreds of thousands of dollars raised for charity over the years. Everybody should attend and participate if you can.”

When harvesting is finished, Gary puts any discarded pumpkins to good use. He feeds them to his chickens. He says they make great eggs that he sells at his wife’s art gallery, Jessel Gallery, on Atlas Peak Road.

“Pumpkin growing is a lot of work, but it’s fun. When people ask me why I do it, I tell them, ‘You have to be crazy.’”

For information about pumpkin growing and seed exchanges, check the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth’s website, gpc1.org.

almanac.com

The secret is in the seed. Most giant pumpkin growers use the “Atlantic Giant.” With plenty of water and lots of space, it’s possible to grow a pumpkin between 200 to 300 pounds.

Prepare the soil well in the fall. Think up to 1,200 square feet or about a 40-foot diameter circle. Make sure the area gets full sun, 8 hours per day. Till a 10-foot diameter bed and till in 6 inches of compost. Shape bed into a low broad mound and cover it for winter with straw mulch. Take a soil test and apply amendments to bring soil to neutral pH.

Since pumpkins take about 120 days to mature, get a head start by planting seeds in small pots indoors.

Pumpkins need a LOT of water; check the soil daily and make sure it stays moist, not soggy.

Put your energy into one pumpkin on the vine, pull off all flower buds until the pumpkin vine is about 10 feet long. After this, let several flowers develop into pumpkins, but remove all but the largest fruit after several weeks of growth.

Bury leaf nodes along the vine which will root and anchor the vine in the ground.

As the pumpkin gets larger, slip a large piece of cardboard or wood under the fruit to avoid rot and insect problems.

Add a canopy of shade cloth over the chosen pumpkin to keep the pumpkin from developing a hard shell which ultimately will restrict its size.

Harvest the pumpkin at the end of the season before the first frost. It will appear pale yellow to orange-red when it’s ready.
