We want to introduce everyone to Napa Integrated Medicine! The first of it’s kind regenerative clinic devoted entirely toward improving the movement and functionality of patients without the need for narcotics or surgery! Our team is devoted to establishing the first of it’s kind Functional Medicine Regenerative clinic in Napa. We focus on the maximum results for injury recovery, joint rehabilitation with out surgery, and post-surgical recovery. No other clinic in Northern California offers the type and quality of care that we are pioneering! What makes us different? The corporation was founded on the golden rule... “We treat each and every patient how we would like to be treated.” We do this by providing unique care for: ✓ Hip Pain

✓ Hand Pain

✓ Knee Pain ✓ Foot Pain

✓ Shoulder Pain ✓ Ankle Pain ✓ Arm Pain

✓ Chronic Spinal Injuries

Our patients see amazing results! It starts with the highly detailed examination – allowing us to get the original cause or causes of your problem. By utilizing functional medicine, regenerative medicine, chiropractic, physio-therapy, sound nutritional guidance and state of the art therapy equipment our patients experience one of the best and quickest recovery processes available. By screening our patients and providing a thorough examination the doctors then meet to review viability and the treatment protocols to best get this patient from their current state to where they can feel and do the most! It’s unlike any practice in Northern California because the patient care is truly a “Team Effort”! Jonathan Figg MD, Karsten Garduce NP, and David Eade DC, have a combined 34 years of technical, practical and “old fashioned” serve the patient experience. It’s our attitude and commitment that are the driving forces of this new Medical Office. What makes it different is that from the moment the patient enters care they are supervised at every step along the way. From Pre-Therapy, to Procedure to PostTherapy you are a person that is inspired. Not just given an insurance number and told to wait indefinitely! You are delivered a new protocol in health care. One that seeks to challenge the standards of care and lift them to a new level! Napa Valley Integrative Medicine is truly unique. And we look forward to working with our community to establish an ongoing level of trust and outcomes that will help to change the field. We seek to educate the patient on the possibility of cartilage preservation. Returning to a level of living that wasn’t possible before is what we are working to achieve. We do this without long term use of narcotics, opiates and costly replacement surgeries. When we get down to the basics of why we live it’s truly about enjoying each and every day wth all of our faculties working at their best! Not everyone is a candidate. Sometimes the need for surgery is present and when it is, we make sure we refer you to some of the best to perform the procedures but most importantly we work with you to get and maintain the best outcomes. That’s why we have our initial consultation and examination to see if this process is right for you.

Patients can experience significant chest pain, fatigue and shortness of breath and usual therapies may not alleviate their discomfort. Cardiac Hospice plays a unique and valuable role in the end-of-life care of cardiac patients and their families. It reduces unnecessary trips to the hospital, and emergency medical intervention by carefully monitoring the patient, and communicating clearly and regularly with their caregivers. “Plants in keyhole gardens look more natural, not in straight lines, because they grow the way nature grows. It’s more beautiful, with curves and patterns.” ~ Rachel Kohn Obut Owner/Operator of Little Moon Farm

Keyhole Gardens

PRODUCTIVE SMALL FOOTPRINT GARDENS By Kathleen Reynolds

You want to grow vegetables and fruit to feed yourself, but you only have a tiny garden area. What if you wanted to feed your family, your extended family, what about your village? Oh, and there’s a drought.

kneel or bend over to tend to the plants. Some have stakes or rough arbors over the garden so a shade structure can be added in extreme heat or even to protect against frost conditions.

A keyhole garden may be the answer. The garden takes its name from a small, usually circular, garden with a small path, or notch, that dead ends in the middle, resembling an old-fashioned door keyhole. The garden can also be square, V-shaped or in a mound and the walls can be fashioned from any material that can hold soil: sticks, logs, rocks or bricks.

In simplest form, at the end of the path is a wire cage, basket or vessel with drain holes, into which kitchen waste and cardboard is composted. Keyhole gardens hold moisture and nutrients because of the compost pile. The notch makes it easy for the gardener to add kitchen scraps to the compost as well as ease of planting and harvesting. The garden has a drainage layer, a soil layer, and a planting area, everything that plants need to thrive. When it rains or when you water the compost, the nutrients seep into the surrounding planting bed.

The concept was developed and adopted by humanitarian organizations in the 1990s in the sub-Saharan regions of Africa to help combat hunger by teaching people how to grow their own food. It’s been estimated that over 20,000 keyhole gardens have been built there. Most keyhole gardens are roughly six feet in diameter with walls about waist high, eliminating the need to

“Keyhole gardens are good because you devote less space to the pathway and more to the garden,” says Rachel Kohn Obut, owner operator of Little Moon Farm and a teacher of ecological gardening and other topics for Napa Valley College’s

Community Education. “You can have one little garden or a network of keyhole gardens depending on your space.” “A keyhole garden is one aspect of permaculture, a philosophy of gardening in a way that most imitates nature,” says Rachel. “It is built on the principals of sustainability, minimizing pathways and interplanting different plants.” “Plants in keyhole gardens look more natural, not in straight lines, because they grow the way nature grows. It’s more beautiful, with curves and patterns.” Penny Pawl has been a Napa County Master Gardener since 1997 and has mentioned her keyhole gardens several times when she writes for the “Napa Register Master Gardener” column. “I have four keyhole gardens and use worms in them,” says Penny, who explains that the worms decompose the composting material, and their castings enhance the soil around

them. “I grow bonsai and first started using worms because their waste product is good for bonsai moss. I’ve got eight worm beds, including one in each keyhole garden. I use garbage cans as the compost bins, some without bottoms and some with bottoms and holes drilled into them for drainage. The idea is the worms travel back and forth between the compost and the soil.” The compost bin for the keyhole garden uses the same materials as a worm bed: cardboard, kitchen waste, dead plants and newsprint. “They love cardboard and go through it much faster than newsprint,” she says. “They like the taste of the glue used in cardboard. The glue contains formaldehyde that’s tasty to them. Sow and other bugs also thrive in worm beds. I leave them there because they help fertilize the plants, too. One of my gardens has a lizard living in it; another has a frog. I like them because they keep the fruit flies down.” Penny puts cardboard on top of the compost scraps and covers the top with plastic. “You have to keep all the elements moist for the worms to thrive,” she explains and chuckles. “I have to replace the worms occasionally because they run away from home.”

Welcome DR. JEANNETTE H. BARKHURST! Dr. Jeannette H. Barkhurst is very excited to be joining the team at Napa West and Napa River Pet Hospitals. She has over 20 years experience in the field and is looking forward to continuing the philosophy where high-quality medicine is the standard of patient care. Her previous home is in Bend, Oregon and she is a faithful 49er fan. She is looking forward to relocating to the bay area. Jeannette has been surrounded by horses, dogs and cats her entire life and pursued a career in veterinary medicine to ensure their needs were always met. As a practitioner she has always focused on communication and client education so that pet parents will always feel informed and supported in the care of their family members. She equally enjoys medicine, surgery and dentistry, but has special interests in diabetes management, endocrine disease, sports medicine, and rehabilitation.

Another strong proponent and instructor of keyhole garden construction is Deb Tolman, PhD, from Clifton, Texas. An environmental scientist and landscape designer, she co-founded a non-profit focused on sustainability, the Silo Project, and authored the book, “Soiled Rotten: Keyhole Gardens All Year Round.” “There is no compost that goes into the keyhole garden using my method; no native soil,” writes Deb in an email. “It’s complete science which makes the shape not mine, but the method is definitely inspired by me. We make compost in less than four weeks with nothing but cardboard, tons of it, and manure.” Her website (debtolman.com) provides instructions on how to construct a keyhole garden. There are other permaculture variations of the keyhole concept. One of them is “hügelkultur,” a centuries-old, traditional way of building a raised garden from rotten logs and plant debris. These mounds can be 5 to 6 feet high, made of logs, branches, leaves, straw, cardboard, grass clippings, and manure. Over time as the wood breaks down, a “hügelbed” sinks, up to a couple of feet, after the wood decomposes and settles. Because of the base of compostable material, keyhole gardens have been shown to be among the most productive small footprint gardens. For those wanting additional information on keyhole gardens, Rachel Kohn Obut recommends the book “Gaia’s Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture” by Toby Hemenway.

Dine Locally to Donate to Schools

August 2022

The first school bells will ring in the 2022-2023 academic year this month, also signaling the beginning of sports, music, arts and other extracurricular activities. Many of the programs that enrich education need more fiscal support than school districts and tuition programs provide. Those involved, such as room parents, coaches, directors, booster clubs and parent teacher associations, therefore, regularly rely upon fundraisers to make ends meet. Hungry

to help? Get ready to dine and donate. Locally, with our vibrant hospitality industry, thousands have benefitted from Dine and Donate events hosted by generous restaurateurs. A Dine and Donate event is typically promoted by an outside organization, group or team who encourages patrons to dine at a specific restaurant on a certain day and time, the restaurant then donates a portion of proceeds back to the designated group. Everybody wins!

Dine and Donates support Napa County Schools and youth-related organizations, as well as other causes. Why are they so important? “Because most of these programs are not supported by the school district or state funding, so they are forced to fundraise to keep these important programs alive,” explained Tom Finch of Filippi’s Pizza Grotto located in the Oxbow District. “Almost every Dine and Donate event is run by parents and volunteers that are focused on giving back to their children’s education and growth.” At the north end of the city of Napa, Ben Koenig of Heritage Eats said, “We have always looked at our presence as a small business in Napa as a privilege and not something to be taken for granted. So, for us, a decision was made early on to contribute and participate as much as reasonably possible in community-related causes so that we could in some small way do our part to strengthen the foundation of our special community. Fundraising is a necessary evil in many ways for a lot of organizations in the community, and if we are able to use our platform to not only help raise a few bucks for a good cause, but also to bring a sense of camaraderie and togetherness for the participating organization, then we are happy to do our part.”

“As we support the programs, we also build a reputation that we are focused on the kids and the community. In turn we are supported by that same community,” Finch added, listing schools, youth sports, foster programs, housing programs, choirs, churches, elder care and cancer support amongst the many programs that his restaurant has supported.

As a parent and always-eager (Eat out in Napa? Yes, please!) restaurant patron, I have a personal understanding of how every penny counts in terms of making something happen or helping someone out. Not only is it a treat to go out, it feels pretty great to know that I am simultaneously helping out a program in need. Some other local restaurants that give back through Dine and Donate programs include Tarla, Food Shed, Il Posto, Taqueria Rosita, Hop Creek, Ristorante Allegria, Mary’s Pizza Shack and Villa Corona.

successful they become. As well, if you have a child or a loved one who is supported by one of these programs, you will quickly understand why the help is so necessary.” “A large majority of the Dine and Donates are in some way, shape or form tied to a youth-related cause within our community. The kids are really the bedrock of Napa, so it seems to us a no-brainer to want to do whatever is in our power to help enable the various initiatives and efforts that give them opportunities to get ahead,” said Koenig. For both Heritage Eats and Filippi’s Pizza Grotto, they are approached by many groups annually, and again and again the events have been successful. Filippi’s estimates in excess of $350,000 has been donated back to local organizations as a result of Dine and Donate events! Dave Ruane, who directs the Napa High Vocal Music Workshop has worked alongside other music directors and parents to help raise funds for the Napa

High Choral Boosters which benefits several music programs at the school. “We feel very fortunate to have such great community support from restaurants like FoodShed, Villa Corona, Mary’s Pizza, Hop Creek Pub, Heritage Eats, MOD Pizza, Fillipi’s and Oxbow Public Market. Our group has received between 20 and 30 percent of the food sales from these restaurants at our Dine and Donates. Some of these establishments donate additional funds beyond the agreed upon percentage of that day’s ticket sales.” Ruane reports. “This has been an important part of our fundraising efforts for many years. We receive very little funding for new music and enrichment activities for our choir students. It is a fun way to bring our choir families and supporters together to help fund our program. They don’t have to cook and get to feel great about supporting a program that creates life changing experiences for our students.” At Heritage Eats, Koenig says that the Dine and Donates have been nothing but positive. “When it

comes down to it, the success of the Dine and Donate really hinges upon the outreach plan that the participating organization or group puts together to get the word out. Some groups do a great job of spreading the word and rallying their community to support. Others, for whatever reason, have a harder time in finding that sort of traction. No matter the outcome, we are happy to help in any small way we can. Even a few hundred dollars goes a long way!”

“Get involved,” Finch at Filippi’s encouraged, “Unfortunately the state has taken away support for most of these programs that are vital to the development of our youth and those in need.” Contact restaurants directly to set up a Dine and Donate. At Heritage Eats the best way to reach out is through their website HeritageEats.com and then submit a “catering inquiry” or send an email to Ben Koenig at ben@heritageeats.com. MAIN STREET REUNION

Show & Shine

ADMISSION & PARKING

Sponsored by

FRIDAY, AUGUST 19TH

Downtown Property owners through the Property Based Improvement District (PBID), Napa Valley Marketplace Magazine and the City of Napa. Without their generous support, the show would not be possible. Visit DoNapa.com for full details. By Craig Smith

For the first time in three years, the Downtown Napa Association and the Napa Valley Cruisers will host the Main Street Reunion car show on Saturday, August 20, and Show & Shine the Friday night before. “It’s been too long since we’ve been able to have our car show, and people have really missed it,” said Chris Butler, who is running the show for the Cruisers this year. Last spring, when it looked like COVID restrictions were finally being lifted, the hosting groups grappled with whether or not there was time to schedule a full-on car show, and

decided there wasn’t. Wanting to do something rather than nothing, they planned a Show & Shine last October. Car owners quickly filled every available spot, and everybody was excited about getting together again. Instead of getting together, what we got was rain. Almost eight inches of it. “I guess the good news is that we didn’t cancel it and then not get any rain. Eight inches pretty much cancels anything anybody is going to do,” said Allison Hallum, co-owner of Eiko’s, Napa Noodles and Eiko’s

Oxbow, past president and current board member of the Downtown Napa Association. “This year, the show is on.” Memories vary on when the first Main Street Reunion took place, but it was sometime in the late ‘90s. Except for a six-year hiatus about fifteen years ago, it’s been an annual event. And then COVID hit. Main Street Reunion features 400 pre-1978 cars and trucks, and is the only show of its kind in Napa. Most of the cars are locally owned. “I’m always impressed to see how many really great cars there are, that I don’t know about, in Napa,”

said Mike Phillips, who was the president of the Cruisers and ran the show for nine years, staring in 2013. As the show has grown in popularity, it attracts more cars from the Bay Area and the occasional car from Southern California, Nevada and Arizona. “The Cruisers wanted to do a car show for years, but had trouble navigating through the red tape to pull it off,” said Craig Smith, Executive Director of the Downtown Napa Association. “When they first approached our organization, they challenged me to help get it off the ground. Turns out, they only needed me to handle

the Three P’s: Permits, Police and Porta-potties. The Cruisers have always been able to deliver the cars.” The crowds that come out to see the cars gets bigger every year, but it’s never too crowded. “The show covers seven blocks and a large parking lot, which spreads things out nicely,” said Smith. Ten years ago, the Cruisers added a pre-show Show & Shine, the brainchild of Tammy Robinette, a Cruiser and former co-chair of the car show. “A Show & Shine event the night before the car show gives everybody another chance to see the cars in more of a party atmosphere,” said Tammy Robinette, president of the Cruisers. “People can check out all the great cars, enjoy something to eat and drink, plus listen to good music too. How great is that?” That first year, organizers thought they would be lucky if fifty cars showed up. There were 150. Trophies are a part of every show, but the Cruisers can rightfully claim to offer thirty of the bestlooking awards out there. “One guy somehow left the show without his award a few years back,” said Phillips. “We sent him a picture of what he had missed, and he and his wife drove here from Fresno the next weekend just to pick it up.”

THE LITTLE CLINIC

THAT COULD OLE Health Celebrates 50 Years of Caring for Our Community OLE Health now offers medical, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy, optometry, and nutrition, caring for 40,000 patients per year.

Napa Valley is a world-class travel destination, famous for a vibrant and eclectic wine industry. Those who visit us experience the glamour of the swanky tasting room and curated food and wine experiences. But, those of us who live here know that at our roots, we are an agricultural community. Our economic success rests on the farm workers and other service industry jobs that keep this Valley running. OLE Health provides care to these essential workers that power our wine and hospitality industries, and this year it turns 50! While much has changed over 50 years, the most enduring characteristic about OLE Health is that it would not be here if not for the support of this incredible community. In 1972, a group of farm workers in Napa Valley, frustrated by the lack of resources available to the Spanish-speaking community took matters into their own hands.

They rallied together, along with a group of forward-thinking vintners, to create a small clinic that would offer healthcare to the Hispanic community at the Rutherford Information Center. Clinica OLLE, named for Organizacion Latino Americana de Liberacion Economica, was staffed entirely by volunteers. Today, that little clinic has grown into six health centers in two counties, with a staff of more than 300 individuals dedicated to caring for everyone in the community. But this reality was far from guaranteed in 1972. In fact, many times throughout the years, OLE Health almost closed its doors. It was because

of the unwavering support of the community that OLE Health hasn’t only survived but thrived. In its first years, OLE grew rapidly as word spread about the clinic. Clinica OLLE wasn’t just providing healthcare; it was connecting people to other resources and helping them assimilate by learning English, apply for citizenship, and more. By 1975 the space at the information center no longer suited the nearly 250 plus families served by the clinic. Clinica OLLE was given a new space above the La Luna Market in Rutherford. By 1980, the clinic had been finding its footing and had sufficient funding

for three paid staff members, including a director, family nurse practitioner, and assistant. Then, disaster struck when a fire destroyed the facility. Fortunately, it didn’t take long for the community to step in and help OLE keep seeing patients. St. Helena Hospital loaned OLE Health a modular unit that provided a home for the clinic and its patients for 11 years. Despite having a place to see patients, in 1981 Clinica OLE lost crucial funding it has secured from the California Rural Health Division, throwing its existence into question for the second time in less than two years. Once again, it was the

community that came to the aid of the fledgling clinic. The board of directors turned to private fundraising and were able to secure funding that kept the clinic operating.

It was around this time that Clinica OLLE began serving all low-income and uninsured residents of Napa Valley, and it changed its name to reflect that. Community Health Clinic Ole was born. Wanting to create a more secure future for the clinic financially, its leadership sought to add Community Health Clinic Ole as a beneficiary of the Napa Valley Wine Auction in 1984. This signaled a recognition that remains today: without OLE Health, there could be no Napa Valley. Despite expansion and changes over the years, OLE Health always has and always will care for those who make Napa’s economic engine run: farmworkers picking grapes, hospitality workers serving both front and back of house in hotels and restaurants. In 1986, the OLE Health Foundation was created in order to ensure a more stable financial future and provide a consistent way for the community to support us. Thankfully, the days of being on the brink are far behind OLE Health, and it’s been steady growth since.

In 2005, OLE Health became a Federally Qualified Health Center, meaning it would receive federal funding to support operations, have access to participate in federal programs, and operationalize many practices already in place, such as offering a sliding scale and not turning away people without insurance or who are unable to pay. The federal funding and grants help, but its work would not be possible without the continued support of a variety of donors, businesses, and partners. Over the years, one partner has been invaluable: The Napa Valley Vintners. They have given roughly $40 million to support OLE Health’s operations and expansion. The Vintners have helped provide OLE Health adequate facilities to meet our growing needs to serve more patients. With support and leadership from John Shafer and Richard Walton, the Vintners leased OLE Health the Pear Tree Lane building in 2002 to OLE Health, and provided $6 million for its newest facility, the Napa Valley Vintners South Napa Campus, that opened in 2019. Beyond the generosity of NVV, OLE Health relies on grants, donations, and corporate partnerships to help offset more than $10 million needed annually to offer

comprehensive care and to fulfill its mission to help to everyone who walks through its doors, including those unable to pay. OLE Health kicked off its 50th anniversary celebrations May 11-15 with a series of fundraising events to help address that gap. Thanks to the generosity of attendees and the community, $1.7 million was raised to continue to ensure quality healthcare to those who live and work in Napa Valley, regardless of ability to pay. As OLE Health continues to celebrate this milestone anniversary, it does so with gratitude for all the members of the Napa community. Thank you on behalf of everyone who works at OLE Health; everyone who receives care from OLE Health; and everyone who has a little more peace of mind because OLE Health is there when needed.

To thank the community for its support:
