Purpose and Vision

Public art challenges our senses and brings joy to our lives. It ignites our imagination and interest in fresh new ways, and gives us a chance to consider our city from a new perspective. It educates and inspires. It highlights beauty and innovation.

Public art is located in a space where residents and visitors can view and enjoy it. It has the power to reach more viewers because it is located in the path of our everyday lives.

Public art may illustrate history and tell a story. It welcomes tourists to our community and invites them to feel connected. It unifies. It summons reflection and celebrates our beautiful Napa Valley.

The Stage is Set. Now Prepare for the Impact!

Local visual artists are invited to submit a proposal to create a monumental mural to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Napa Valley Community Foundation (NVCF). The challenge is to design and paint a mural for the Sato Family Nonprofit Center in Napa, a hub for various nonprofit organizations.

The mural must reflect the Foundation’s mission and values, plus celebrate community spirit and the generosity and resilience of Napa Valley.

This is a competition, and the commissioned artist must fulfill specific project goals.

Artist Reward

The selected artist receives $15,000 to design and paint the artwork. The commissioned artist(s) will be reimbursed for materials, equipment rental, and permit costs.

Garden Party!

Warm weather makes us want to gather in our gardens. In order to throw the best garden party ever be sure to invite the birds, butterflies, and bees! Laying out a banquet for these party guests means planting trees, shrubs and perennials with flowers, berries and (sometimes) delicious leaves. While it’s true that the ultimate feast for our local wildlife is a native oak tree, not everyone has space for one of these majestic giants. A shame, because an oak tree supports more butterflies, birds and bees than any other plant! Tagging just behind, in terms of importance to local fauna, is none other than poison oak! It’s a rare gardener who is willing to invite this plant into their garden space though. Here are some suggestions for easy dinner fare for some of our favorite garden guests. Adding the following plants and features will make garden party attendees feel welcome and right at home.

Butterflies...

Perhaps the best dressed garden party guests, butterflies put on a fantastic show with their colorful wings. Plants with broad ‘landing pad-shaped’ flowers like yarrow and milkweed are exactly what so many butterflies are looking for. Of course, kids are welcome to this garden party too, so be sure to plant for caterpillars. Narrow-leaf milkweed is great for monarch caterpillars,

maypop passionflower is a favorite for Gulf fritillary caterpillars, and bronze fennel is a choice snack for swallowtail caterpillars. Painted lady caterpillars eat calendula, hollyhock, and mallow leaves while acmon blue caterpillars eat buckwheat and lupine. There are more than 137 types of butterflies and moths in Napa County, so consider planting a wide variety of flowers to appease all appetites. Also consider: California lilac, lupine, purple needlegrass,

monkeyflower, manzanita, coyote mint, zinnias, Mexican sunflower, echium, or salvia.

Birds...

Every party needs a raucous group of extroverts to liven things up! Birds do just that with their calls and songs. Now, we’re not calling hummingbirds lushes, but it dosen’t take much to get them to hang around. It’s true that hummers prefer red flowers like

cardinal monkeyflower and abutilon, but so long as there is a steady supply of nectar, they are happy! Other birds prefer the insects that hang out with flowers. Goldfinches love tall verbena for this very reason. Seeds are of course a happy bird snack. Sunflowers and buckwheat are sure to bring in finches, sparrows, juncos, and towhees. Shrubs with berries like toyon are a favorite for western bluebirds, and robins. Lastly, a water source like a fountain or birdbath is a sure way to support birds and supply them with what they need to hang around for a while. Also consider: columbine, coffeeberry, manzanita, artemisia , ceanothus, dogwood ‘Eddie’s White Wonder’, CA fuchsia, lupine, Oregon grape, and elderberry.

Bees...

Bees really know how to belly up to the bar. Did you know that there are more than 1,600 species of bee in California? Don’t worry, you don’t have to host them all. But if you want to get the bees really excited then be sure to plant California fuchsia. These tubular flowers are too long for short bee tongues but they

have a trick up their tiny sleeves. Larger bees come along and punch holes in the base of each flower. This “backdoor” is then used by a veritable parade of smaller bees! Another popular nectar source that grows well in the Napa Valley is nepeta. Plant a few nepeta perennials and you are likely to see digger bees, blue orchard bees, and even leafcutter bees. While nectar and pollen are often what bees are chasing, certain species of bee actually look for the leaves of roses and redbuds! These “leaf-cutter bees” snip tidy half moons from their favorite plants and use them to build homes for their young. The lacey foliage that remains might be considered ‘decoration’ for your garden party. Also consider: salvia, penstemon, yarrow, alyssum, russian sage, aster, ceanothus, CA poppies, gaillardia, lavender ‘Goodwin Creek’, coffeeberry, toyon, coyote mint, buckwheat, primrose, and verbena. There are many others you can invite to your garden party such as the delicate lacewings, the all-business soldier beetles, and the elegant snake-neck flies who all prefer to dine on aphids. Ladybugs and honeybees will of course be in attendance. Some of these may end up being dinner for the birds but, as they say, all’s fair in love and war.

EVERY THURSDAY EVENING IN JUNE

For the second year, the month of June means Shop, Sip and Stroll in Downtown Napa. Locals loved it last year, and attendance grew each week as it spread via word of mouth. “It’s really unique,” said Paul Kelaita, who missed the first one last June, but attended all the others with his wife. “It’s a chance to visit stores we’d never been in and taste wines we might have never tried.” He laughed and added, “I think downtown should do this

The concept is simple – for ten bucks, attendees get a glass and a wristband. From 5 to 7PM each of the four Thursdays in June, people can visit stores (usually a dozen or so each week) that have balloons displayed in front of them, and get a taste from whichever tasting room has paired with that store. Shop a bit, enjoy a splash, visit with friends and then walk to the next store, where you can do it all over again. Visit every place if you wish and drink wine at all of them – it’s all covered by the initial $10. There’s also outdoor music each week, a great

opportunity to visit friends while enjoying mild Napa summer nights. “It seemed to be mostly locals,” said Kelaita. “We saw a number of neighbors there.”

Mike Greensill and Kellie Fuller have received a Napa Valley Presents grant to create a time machine to take you back to the 1940s Dream Bowl with a live band and dancing. If you did not get enough of Stevie Nicks at BottleRock this year, a magical dose of the music of Fleetwood Mac will be played live at Napa’s JaM Cellars Ballroom by Fleetwood Macramé: A Fleetwood Mac Tribute Band on Saturday, June 15 to benefit Congregation Beth Shalom.

More than a tribute band, Fleetwood Macramé takes audiences on a musical journey flashing back to the late 60s and extending all the way to today. The original Fleetwood Mac band was a British-American rock band founded in 1967 in London.

Together the members released a string of hits primarily in the late 70s and 80s.

What had begun as a blues band, evolved into a folksy pop rock musical style. Their 1975 album Fleetwood Mac topped the Billboard 200 chart in the United States and then in 1977 the album Rumours featured four U.S. Top 10 singles and long-recognized tunes including Dreams, Go Your Own Way, The Chain, and You Make Loving Fun.

that perform the beloved hits and deep cuts from the legendary band’s extensive musical history. The show will fill the JaM Cellars Ballroom with live music, to which fans typically sing and dance to all night long.

The members of Fleetwood Macramé include Linda Moody, a multifaceted musician and singer who emulates Stevie Nicks. Joining her is drummer Jai Bird, bassist Tori Fulkerson-Jones, guitarist Owen Adair Kelley, and Lindsay Everly, an adventurous singer and songwriter, as well as dueling pianos entertainer.

Congregation Beth Shalom is a Jewish Reform synagogue that has been central to Jewish life in the Napa Valley for more than 70 years, and a participant in the Napa Interfaith Council. The congregation is producing this concert, building upon the success of a Jim Curry concert at JaM Cellars Ballroom held in the past, which was a tribute to the late John Denver, said Maura Sparks “We wanted to repeat the fun and excitement of offering another concert for the community.”
