This Woman-Owned Flooring Company

Brings the Showroom to You

Why Floor Coverings International of Napa is your ultimate flooring solution.

Napa resident Liz Edwards opened the Napa/Sonoma branch when she realized there was a gap in the marketplace and residents were being underserved. “As a working mom, I know what it’s like to have limited time to deal with the hassle of a home project…and even small barriers can make me want to opt out of the project completely. When you decide to work with Floor Coverings International of Napa, we’ll manage the timelines for you and keep you involved as little or as much as you’d like.”

In the realm of home improvement, few decisions are as crucial and impactful as selecting the right flooring with the right partner. It’s not merely about aesthetics; it’s about durability, functionality, and adding value to your space. With a commitment to exceptional customer service, here are a few ways that Floor Coverings International of Napa needs to be your next flooring partner:

ONE TEAM FROM START TO FINISH

From the initial complimentary in-home consultation through to the final installation, you’ll have the same dedicated team there to help you along the way. This integrated approach fosters clear communication, consistency, and accountability throughout the entire project.

LOCALLY OWNED, BUT WITH COLLECTIVE BUYING POWER

Founded in 1988, Floor Coverings International has grown into one of North America’s largest flooring retailers, boasting 200+ locations and serving 400,000+ happy customers (with an average review of 4.8/5 stars as well!). Leveraging this expansive network is one of the ways that Floor Coverings International of Napa can secure competitive rates on quality flooring products for their clients.

FLOOR COVERINGS

MOBILE SHOWROOM PROVIDES A SUPERIOR ONE-STOP-SHOP EXPERIENCE

While other flooring retailers have you go to a showroom to check in/out their samples to bring home, Liz and her team drive the mobile showroom directly to the client’s space. And while the mobile showroom has 3,000+ samples inside, most clients don’t see anywhere near that many. “By listening to the client about what they’re looking for, we’re able to curate the offerings and find something quickly that our clients love. Otherwise it’s easy to be overwhelmed with the amount of options out there – and it’s our job to simplify that”, Liz added.

SAME-DAY QUOTES

At the initial in-home appointment, the Floor Coverings International of Napa team will listen to the client’s needs, measure the project space, showcase flooring samples, and often can provide down-to-the-penny quotes during that appointment. Even sales tax is included in the rates provided. The team moves as quickly or as slowly as the client desires.

Water-Smart Landscaping

Water-smart landscaping produces attractive landscapes because it uses designs and plants that are well suited to local conditions.

Water is our most precious natural resource; without it, there is no life. Yet judging by our water use and consumption practices, many Americans take it for granted.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the average American uses approximately 80 gallons of water per day— that’s nearly 260 gallons used every day by the average family. More and more Americans are demonstrating their water smarts indoors by retrofitting their homes with WaterSense labeled plumbing products and ENERGY STAR® certified appliances. But outdoors, especially in the summer, the amount of water used by a household can exceed the amount used for all other purposes in the entire year. This is especially true in hot, dry climates.

Gardening and lawn care account for the majority of this seasonal increase. Of the estimated 26.6 billion gallons of water used daily by households in the United States, nearly 8 billion gallons, or 30 percent, is devoted to outdoor water use. In dry climates, a household’s outdoor water use can be as high as 60 percent. The majority of this is used for watering

lawns and landscaping. In fact, it is estimated that the average American home uses 50,500 gallons of water outdoors each year, mostly for irrigation (DeOreo et al., 2016).

Many mistakenly believe that stunning gardens and beautiful lawns are only possible through extensive watering, fertilization, and pesticide application. As this brochure demonstrates, eye-catching gardens and landscapes that save water and protect the environment are, in fact, easily achieved by employing water-smart landscaping.

For specific information about how to best apply water-smart landscaping principles in your geographical area, consult with your county extension service and local garden and nursery centers. Local governments and water utilities also possess a wealth of information, suggestions, and sometimes incentives for using water more efficiently in all aspects of your life, including landscaping.

Napa water customers should visit cityofnapa.org/water to find the latest incentives to make their yards water-smart, including the Cash For Grass Rebate and our generous discount on the Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller.

“Having a beautiful yard doesn’t have to mean using a lot of water or spending a lot of money.”

Key Tips To Remember When It Comes To Water-Smart Landscaping:

• Go native or choose plants that need less water. Once established, native, regionally appropriate, and low waterusing plants require little water beyond normal rainfall. If you’re designing a new landscape or just sprucing up your current landscape, be sure to consider the water needs of the plants you choose.

• Group plants according to their water needs. Grouping vegetation with similar watering needs into specific “hydrozones” reduces water use by allowing you to water to each zone’s specific needs. Turf areas and shrub areas should always be separated into different hydrozones because of their differing water needs.

• Maintain healthy soils. Healthy soils are the basis for a water-smart landscape; they effectively cycle nutrients, minimize runoff, retain water, and absorb excess nutrients, sediments, and pollutants.

• Be selective when adding turf areas. Turfgrass receives the highest percentage of irrigation water in traditional landscaping. To improve the aesthetics of your landscape and better manage outdoor water use, select droughttolerant turfgrass and plant turf only where it has a practical function, such as children’s play areas.

• Water wisely. Know your plants’ water needs and avoid watering during the heat of the day. If you have an irrigation system, make regular adjustments to ensure proper watering. And be sure to look for the WaterSense label on components for your system.

• Go small. Use microirrigation on plant beds, shrubs, and trees and reserve spray irrigation for turf areas.

• Use mulch. Incorporate mulch around shrubs and garden plants to help reduce evaporation, inhibit weed growth, moderate soil temperature, and prevent erosion. Adding organic matter and aerating soil can improve its ability to hold water.

• Provide regular maintenance. Replace mulch around shrubs and garden plants at least once per year, and remove weeds and thatch as necessary.

• To see how some of your neighbors have become watersmart, be sure to attend the Climate-Friendly Garden Tour on Saturday, May 18. Details can be found at naparcd. org/gardentour2024.

In short, plan and maintain your landscape with these principles of water efficiency in mind, and it will continue to be attractive and healthy while requiring less maintenance and less water.

Don’t let your

yard control your water bill.

With today’s common watering practices, up to 50 percent of the water applied to lawns and gardens is lost through evaporation, wind, runoff, or being pushed beyond the root zone because it is applied too quickly or in excess of the plants’ needs. The goal of efficient irrigation is to reduce these losses by applying only as much water as is needed to keep your plants healthy.

To promote the strong root growth that supports plant health, water deeply and only when the plant needs it. For clay soils, it is recommended to split watering into multiple shorter cycles to allow water time to soak deeper. Irrigating with consideration to soil type, the condition of your plants, the season, and weather conditions—rather than on

a fixed schedule—significantly improves your watering efficiency and results in healthier plants. Grouping plants according to similar water needs also makes watering easier and more efficient. Lawns, gardens, and landscapes can be irrigated manually or with an automatic irrigation system. Manual watering with a handheld hose tends to be the most waterefficient method. Research suggests that households with in-ground sprinkler systems used 50 percent more water than those without. (Mayer and DeOreo, 1998).

By any measure, Napa sisters Mara and Tama Adelman are accomplished. Mara has a Ph.D. in Communication, has been a professor at Northwestern University and Seattle University, a Fulbright Specialist in Ethiopia and China, taught aboard Semester at Sea and for Sony Co. in Japan. She is a speaker at conferences and author of numerous trade articles and several books. Tama is a Registered Nurse who served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. Rather than resting on their laurels when they reached retirement age, both decided to devote themselves to helping others.

Tama travels worldwide 10 months a year, volunteering with Hands on Global, an organization that serves disadvantaged, underserved and displaced people by providing medical support. Mara enjoyed making jewelry as a hobby and now makes jewelry and teaches jewelry making classes, sending the profits to Hands on Global.

Lives of Tama Mara

“My jewelry found philanthropy. It’s beyond my wildest fantasy to convert a hobby into a fundraiser. It was a natural fit. I never have burnout.”

“As children of the 60’s, it was: ‘Be part of the solution’ and, ‘If not now, when?’” says Mara. “In Jewish tradition it’s tikkun olum, ‘to repair the world.’ It’s not even an overt act, one simply does it and asks for no acknowledgement. It’s up there with eating and sleeping.”

Tama knew of Hands on Global through one of her good friends, who was the executive director.

“The mission of Hands on Global is to bring healthcare to unserved areas throughout the world,” says Tama, who has volunteered with the organization for 10 years.

“Making earrings is one of my passions, but how many can you wear?” asks Mara. “My dear friend, Nikki Stessin, owner of Beadworld in Seattle, donates supplies which enables me to give 100% to

Hands on Global. Plus, as a retired professor, I still love teaching. It’s so much fun to teach a skill or an art form. So different from theory.”

She estimates her jewelry classes, lessons and parties generate at least $5,000 a year in donations to Hands on Global.

“As a retired nurse and lifelong traveler, their mission fit with how I wanted to be in my retirement–doing service to those in need and immersing myself in different cultures.”

Hands on Global sends her where her skills are most necessary. She’s currently volunteering in the Ukraine.

“I worked in the refugee camp on Lesvos (in Greece) for over five trips lasting from two months to six months,” Tama says. “The Greek government decided to close the camps to volunteer groups otherwise I would still be working there. I did not go to the US/Mexico border as my Spanish isn’t good enough to work in the medical setting. Ukraine had a different calling for me. As a U.S. Army nurse who previously served in a war zone, I knew the types of injuries soldiers would be sustaining. In addition, part of our family came from both Kiev and Odessa.”

Growing up in a Marine Corps family as “military brats,” they moved every two years.

“Then at the tender ages of 11 and 15, dad left the service, and we settled in San Francisco in the early 60s,” says Mara. “We were at a very impressionable age and San Francisco was definitely not a military base. It was difficult for our parents, who were unaccustomed to the mantra ‘sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll.’”

They consider Napa their home base. A third sister, Mara’s twin,

resides in Mexico and the eldest lives in Murphys.

“We love it in Napa. We built a compound for the sisters, where we could retire. As political activists, we call it ‘The Home for the Unrest.’ We feel very privileged to live here, but also Napa Valley is a very caring community. People of Napa have been amazingly responsive to our call for needs for the Syrian and Afghan refugees and especially for Ukraine. They’ve donated over 1,000 toothbrushes, over 40 pieces of luggage to take medical equipment, even baby onesies for Mexico hospitals. We’ve been very touched by our community’s responsiveness and are very grateful.”

The website for Hands on Global (handsonglobal.org) talks about volunteers and how they can “protect their hearts” from getting emotionally involved with the needy patients.

“Sometimes you can’t just sit with the pain and let it seep through you—by crying or feeling paralyzed by grief,” explains Tama. “That was my response my first time working in the refugee camps. I knew that was unhealthy and not sustainable

coping. I reframed my coping. I now focus on the person in front of me and doing what I can to help that one person—the starfish metaphor; you can’t save all the starfish, but you can save the one. In addition, I have an active breath practice I learned through yoga.”

“My belief is we all just need to do something of service for others-this path fits me,” continued Tama. “I work with a committed core of experienced healthcare workers who are also experienced world travelers.

NVMP May 2024 17

“Even small actions make a difference.”~ Mara

We work as a team, taking on the challenges of providing healthcare in very challenging circumstances throughout the world.”

“We think opportunities to repair the world abound,” says Mara. “We read recently that volunteerism is down, even among retirees. But given the state of global affairs, how can we not do anything? That’s not an option.”

When not helping people, the sisters help our furry friends by running the San Pancho Animales fundraiser auction, helping Mexican street dogs by providing clinics for animal sterilizations, emergency medical help and rescue.

“We call those who bring the dogs to the U.S. for adoption ‘Flight Angels,’” says Mara.

Mara and Tama want to remind everyone that time’s not up as you get older.

“We want to reinforce that once you turn 80, there are other additions to golf, Mahjong and cooking,” says Mara. “People should think about what inspires them to get out and do something. Even small actions make a difference. A meaningful life of service is an asset to yourself and your community.”

NAPA’S PUBLIC ART POWERHOUSE

KLY & Izzy

“I always see a healthy public art presence as a sign that working artists have a voice and are a valued part of that community.”
~ Kristina Young aka KLY

TTo say Napa Valley has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to talented artists would be an understatement. The list is long and admirable—a few are more high-profile than others. That’s because these people are prolific and relentless not only in their quest to create art but to share in the public displays for the beautification of the environment. Some of our public artists have garnered global recognition. Gordon Huether and Jessel Miller easily come to mind; there’s no doubt that their contribution talents and leadership have influenced the subjects of this feature.

Kristina Young and Israel Valencia, (aka KLY and Izzy) have been well-known and highly respected as members of the professional art scene for many years. They have added cultural

enrichment, from one end of the Valley to the next, all while being full-time professional artists— because, as Izzy reminds us, “Exposure doesn’t pay the bills.”

For an artist to provide a good living can be difficult, especially in a place as expensive as Napa Valley. To maintain a professional level of income by making art encompasses much more than the word ‘artist’ implies. Besides making work, they must become competent business people: managing budgets and contracts, marketing, grant writing, paying taxes, fundraising, garnering volunteers. The list seems endless some days—KLY & Izzy’s efforts are at the heart of it. KLY did remind me, although they work nonstop at times to keep things going, the couple appreciates the flexibility they enjoy being artists, because they

ultimately are in control of their own time.

They have enriched private collections and created public art, large-scale and small—KLY as a painter, book illustrator, printmaker, tile maker, or in Izzy’s case as a multi-genre photographer, and because they work well together—both have become mosaic artists. Of course, their disciplines are far wider than my short list.

KLY’s early ambitions were of becoming a commercial artist with the drafting table and tools that go with it; or maybe as an art therapist—connecting deeply with others and helping them heal. The second choice was thwarted when her empathetic leanings kicked in, drawing a shadow on her spirit as she fostered healing for others. She

Napa Through New Eyes Israel (Izz) Valencia Artist Bio & Statement Napa is my home and have photographed its many phases of development since 1993, after my family immigrated here from Mexico in 1990 We lived on Riverside Drive, just south of downtown and even then, noticed that Napa was changing. As young photographer, I was still learning my craft and took many image like these between 1993-1998 of the buildings and streets that surrounded my home. I love to share these images with my neighbors, locals, and visitors to offer a glimpse of a not so long ago past of this special place in the world. I invite you to scan the QR code to view maps and descriptions of where took these photographs. Walk to the locations and take your own picture! received her degree in painting from a small arts college in London and studied illustration and design in the States. But she was destined to become immersed in community art once she was hired in 1999 to design ARTscan, an Arts Council Napa Valley (ACNV) publication.

Eventually, after years of working at ACNV as Program Manager and Director, she struck out solidly on her own.

KLY said, “I really dove into public art at ACNV when we were

working to pass the percent for art ordinance in the City of Napa, the first in Napa County. But I have always loved murals—how they make me remember a place and tell me about the greater community and what they care about. I always see a healthy public art presence as a sign that working artists have a voice and are a valued part of that community. Public art can do so much more than decorate.”

Kristina’s creativity took a backseat for quite a few years while she supported the blossoming art

scene in Napa with the Arts Council. One day someone said to her, “I didn’t know you were an artist.” That changed everything. It was then she knew... it was time for a change.

In 1997, after a couple of successful years as staff photographer for the Saint Helena Star, Izzy received a diagnosis of leukemia which he confronted for four years to persevere and claim his future. “Sometime between my first and second autologous transplants, I worked for Gordon Huether off and on, for five years.

It was at his studio that I first learned about public art.”

This time was followed by eight years as an event and wedding photographer, after which Izzy stepped back to hone his fine art photography skills. He has since earned a valued, sustainable client base.

When Kristina began her work on the Napa Quake Mosaic, Izzy rekindled his appreciation of public art. He told me, “It has been really inspiring to see how Kristina involves and works with the community to produce meaningful public art installations. This inspired me to add the same elements and values to my work to produce photography exhibits, and potentially more public art installations. Creating public art for personal and financial enjoyment goes hand-in-hand with doing what I love,” Izzy said, “and at the same time, I am

expressing myself, my values, and what I believe is important in life with the goal of having a positive impact.”

No sooner than Izzy made the transition from wedding photographer to an eventscentric calendar, well, you know what came next, the pandemic. Quick to act, Izzy went back to his creative roots of fine art photography and developed a focus in social and environmental justice. “In the last three years, I’ve had the opportunity to volunteer and provide my photography to indigenous immigrant organizations and the indigenous communities they help in northern California. I have been fortunate to be invited to their home countries to document inter-tribal gatherings. In the spring of 2023, I accompanied one of the organizations and their members to The Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues event

at the United Nations in New York.”

Izzy spoke of his current display, “It is very exciting for me to have my photography beautify the Napa post office landmark building, especially after the building has been in disrepair and unoccupied since the 2014 earthquake. My piece is one of four public art installations for sites identified as part of the Napa Downtown beautification project.” The display consists of more than eighty photos Izzy took in the early 1990’s when he first came to Napa Valley.

“Recently, I received a grant from Arts Council Napa Valley to produce a photography exhibit honoring indigenous immigrants and their contribution to the wine industry. The exhibit consists of portraits of people from indigenous communities of Napa and Sonoma counties, printed on grape leaves, in a sustainable printing process utilizing photosynthesis.”

You will be stunned by the up-close-and-personal compositions, electrifying colors, and culture Izzy has captured, one frame at a time in his remarkable, commercial, and documentary images. See them at infinityvisuals.com

The art duo has been involved—individually or collectively—in multiple major installations out of the area: Greater San Francisco Bay Area, Sonoma, Oakland, West Sacramento, Lake Tahoe... to just name a few. You can see KLY’s extensive past exhibitions,

murals, large-scale mosaics, and current projects featured on her website, studiokly.com.

Kristina travelled to France last spring assisting Nancy Willis’s, “Path of an Artist” painting trip; they went to Paris and Coullioure (in the South where Matisse and many of the Fauves painted). Nancy is planning a new trip in the Hudson Valley this June. “I can’t go this time, but highly recommend it.” Here’s the website: nancywillis.com/path-of-an-artist-trips-and-tours.

“Last fall, I also worked at Ann Trinca’s “Colores Retreat,” a weeklong creative reset specifically for women in Playa Troncones, Mexico. We just announced the next one in Mérida, Mexico happening October 23-29.”

Kristina and Izzy spoke of the importance of many great teachers who recognized in their students’ talent and one’s drive to create, then steering the student into the path of creativity.

We discussed writing grants and winning the awards of financial support. Advice to artists who want to create art as a livelihood—develop these important, business skills if you want to garner support and financing from entities willing to foster private and community art.

Lend your voice, there’s room for everyone’s creativity to shine. Also, Izzy added, “As a new artist, it’s OK to offer your work for free to gain experience and network, but once you are established, don’t be afraid to be more choosey when prospective clients or friends tell you about the great ‘exposure’ you will receive in exchange for creating art for very little (or no) money...”

There’s a lot of exciting news on the horizon: plans for the Quake Mosaic installation to be overseen by the Rail Arts District. Kristina has many irons in the fire, including a project with Burbank Housing and

the Gasser Foundation: ninety-nine small paintings depicting species of plants and animals indigenous to our county. These will be installed as markers for each apartment, granting each resident original art in their space. Israel’s ‘Native Sun Leaves’ exhibition kicks off a series of three, using a natural (almost no chemicals) photosynthesis photography printing process using fresh leaves, distilled water, stencils and the sun to produce images naturally. They have also just joined 100 Coombs Creative Collective where they share an art studio (100Coombs.com).

Congratulations, on all your efforts, KLY and IZZY, your community appreciates you.

CROSSWALK COMMUNITY CHURCH Pastor Pete

It was in 2015 that Dr. Peter (Pete) Shaw, Pastor of CrossWalk Church in Napa, delivered what he knew would be a “whopper” of a sermon. After the service, it became a topic of discussion throughout the Napa faith community, and lit up online discussion around the country. He had expected some fallout, but couldn’t have anticipated that, within a few years, he would be discharged from a position he held within the church’s regional office, or that CrossWalk would be asked to leave the region. Giving that sermon was a life changing event for Pete and CrossWalk, yet if he had it to do over, he would do the same thing.

Being a Pastor is, so to speak, the family business for the men in Pete’s family. His father and both grandfathers were Pastors. Pete knew before his sophomore year in high school that he would follow their path. He got an undergraduate degree and later attended Northern Seminary, an American Baptist school in Ottawa, Kansas,

where he got a Masters in Divinity. He accepted a pastorate at a small church near Chicago. An American Baptist, Pete does not consider himself Evangelical. “I’ve always believed in women’s equality and social justice,” he said. Under his leadership, the church became the first to do “contemporary church” well, from how they spoke about faith to the music in the services. Word of what was happening in that church spread rapidly, and membership was growing quickly. “I think we were on track to keep growing. It was a positive experience for all of us.”

At the same time, CrossWalk Church in Napa was dying (then known as First Baptist Church). Founded in 1860 as what we would call today an Evangelical church, in the 90’s they suffered two crises, including the Pastor being involved in a scandal and being practically, “run out on the rails,” said Pete. “There were less than a hundred parishioners, and the average age was seventy. It was a

challenging environment. The situation was a crucible of suck.” The regional office knew that CrossWalk needed a new Pastor, and recommended only one person for the job: Rev. Peter Shaw from Princeton, IL, the Pastor who had turned his church around in under four years.

Pete agreed to the assignment, but only after being given carte blanche to do what he felt was needed, and only after the CrossWalk board agreed to put the bylaws on hold. He came to CrossWalk in 1999. Still, it was a bleak situation, the reality of which hit him after about six months of being here. “My wife knew it immediately. In the early days, she would cry on the way home every Sunday.”

Concurrent to that, Pete felt that his theology “wasn’t working anymore,” and by the early 2000’s, “I wasn’t sure I still wanted to be a Pastor.” He decided to immerse himself in his uncertainty by pursuing a doctorate, and did his thesis on soteriology, the “Study of Salvation.” He emerged from his studies with his faith renewed and his commitment to the church strong.

“I wanted CrossWalk to be about equality and equity, and being 100% inclusive.” In around 2008 or 2009, he started “dropping seeds,” as he put it. About homosexuality, “I suggested that we stop making this such a big issue and that there is so much more to talk about. I suggested that we take the Bible seriously but not literally.” He continued to preach like this over the years, and in 2015, after much praying and consultation with the board, decided it was time for the Big Sermon.

“I asked the question, ‘Is God OK with same sex marriage?’ I went through the seven Bible verses people use to dispel homosexuality, pointing out how they didn’t really apply to our contemporary question or context. I reaffirmed that CrossWalk is open to everyone on a spiritual path.

Word of that sermon spread quickly. Two gay men began attending, and eventually asked if they could join the church. Pete said yes. “That’s not what got me fired though,” he said. After attending the church for some time, the two men fell in love and decided to get married. They wanted Pastor Pete to perform the ceremony. For their denominational region, this was crossing a line they wouldn’t allow. “I talked to our

board about it, and they were 100% behind whatever I decided to do,” said Pete. He also told the Executive Minister from the Region, who told him it could cost him a part time paid position he held with the Region. “When I told my wife, her first reaction was, ‘You’ll lose that job?’ but she immediately said, ‘Of course you have to perform the ceremony. It’s what we believe in.’” So, with joy in his heart, Pete married the two men. And then the Executive Minister, the same man that had recommended Pete to CrossWalk twenty years earlier, fired him, and told him the church would have to leave the region. CrossWalk has since become part of ABCUSA’s Evergreen region, a good fit for them.

The CrossWalk website says, “CrossWalk is a progressive Christian church in Napa offering an alternative orthodoxy that many people leaving the faith find attractive and compelling. American Baptists, in particular, have been proponents of equality, from the emancipation of slaves to gender equality, and now a growing number of churches on the LGBTQ front.” CrossWalk is very involved in the community. They work with the City and County to serve as an evacuation shelter, and host over 40 twelve step recovery programs each week. Attending CrossWalk is a consciously made choice. “Nobody comes to us by accident, and it’s been that way since 2008,” said Pete. He is proud of how the church has grown, something parishioners would agree is a direct result of his leadership.
