Earth Day

NAPA

We’re all well aware at this point that the planet is in trouble, and desperately needs our help. We need to focus on what we can do about it, and Napa residents have an opportunity to do so. “City leadership is supporting Napa achieving net zero climate pollutants from public and private operations within the city by 2030, but what can local residents do to help?” said Erin Corona.

Corona is with the Environmental Education Coalition of Napa County (EECNC), the group that hosts Napa’s Earth Day Celebration. “At this year’s Earth Day event, we are going to showcase climate actions that everyone can take, so that we can achieve the 2030 goals the City has set.” Whether you’re a homeowner or a renter, rely on a car or bicycle for transportation, there are steps you can take to make a meaningful difference. “Effective change starts with each individual, because as cliche as it is, together we can make a difference” said Corona.

This year’s Earth Day Celebration is on Saturday, April 20 from 11AM to 4PM at the Oxbow Commons. This annual event

people to local businesses and organizations who provide earthfriendly and creative pathways towards a sustainable future for generations to come. Earth Day Napa is a time to honor and celebrate this planet that we all share.

While the focus remains on environmental education, the Earth Day Celebration promises a lively atmosphere. Live performances from Rock Busters, Shadow Six, and Napa School of Music’s Garage Band will begin at 11AM and continue until 4PM. In addition to live entertainment, there will be delicious local food and beverage vendors. Individuals of all ages can explore regional businesses and organizations through hands-on displays, games and crafts. At this event, there is something for everyone and admission is free.

Originally, this was more of a ‘table-only’ affair, but after a few years, the organizers decided to add entertainment. “We want attendees to leave not only with practical tools for supporting the planet but also with fond memories of a fun-filled day,” says Corona.

Those wishing to help on the water will have the opportunity to do so through a partnership with Enjoy Napa Valley Kayaks. Although some of the stuff people will pick up can be muddy, it’s mostly manageable. “People are much more responsible with their large waste items, and now our main focus is micro trash- those little bitty pieces of plastic that look like fish food when they make it into our waterways.”

The first Earth Day in the country was held in 1970, in response to several environmental catastrophes, particularly the Santa Barbara oil spill and the Cuyahoga River fires of 1969. Many Americans felt it was time to take a

Neither Rain nor Snow nor Sleet

THE DOWNTOWN POST OFFICE IN DEPRESSION ERA NAPA

In the Thirties, life expectancy in America was 58 for men and 62 for women. The average worker earned $1,368 per year, while 25% of them had no jobs at all. Milk cost l4 cents a quart and bread, 9 cents a loaf.

Rita Bordwell’s father had helped organize the original volunteer fire department here in the late l800s. She later wrote a history of Napa’s firemen. For the Register, she described the plight of jobless workers in Napa:

John Steinbeck, when he wrote Grapes of Wrath, must have met some who came to Napa in broken down machines wired together, and in trucks with undernourished and sick little children. Mr. Bobst [first business agent, Napa Central Labor Council] went to the Red Cross and begged funds and his wife Flossie made baby layettes for them. I will admit the local boys did try to keep their workers busy, Sawyer Tannery, the prune plants and fruit sheds… but the waiting room in the Labor Temple was filled with unemployed men and women.

Mrs. Otterson [the longtime Fire Chief’s wife] had a kettle of beans and stew on the stove all the time to help feed those unfortunates. Union men’s wives donated blankets and Mr. Bobst put cots in his rumpus room; other families camped in tents on jobsites. Work was so scarce and we had so many unemployed workers that we had to divide the work, giving each two days and Mr. Bobst would say, “Well that will give them bread.”

Just outside of the city, the local Unemployment Relief Committee established four camps where men cut trees and sold firewood. After his inauguration in l933, FDR founded the Works Progress Administration, employing 8.5 million jobless Americans on public works of all kinds, including 650,000 miles of roadwork and tens of thousands of artworks for public places, including post offices. The government constructed about 1100 post offices during the Depression, including in Napa and St. Helena.

The Napa Register reported in October l93l that:

The federal government today purchased from the Misses Esterby the fine big lot on Randolph second and Franklin Street that is to be the site of Napa‘s handsome post office building. A check in the sum of $20,000 was duly paid over to the owners of the property, and the government received back a deed for the property.

The house was built in l856, about when the town was founded. The site of the Esterby home was two feet below sidewalk level; after heavy rains, the family had to place plank walkways. Rows of trees, known as Osage orange trees bearing a greenish fruit resembling somewhat larger than a Valencia orange, grew along the Second Street frontage.

The Napa Daily Journal reported in May 1933 that:

The cornerstone of Napa’s new $100,000 post office was laid yesterday afternoon with appropriate ceremonies by officers of the Masonic grand lodge in charge of the event, with Grand Master Frank W. Mixter officiating.

The St. Helena Star added:

A large group of St. Helena Masons attended the laying of the cornerstone of the new Napa post office Saturday afternoon, with the Grand Lodge of Masons performing the ceremony. The Masons marched, drummed, and sang from Main and Pearl Street. The grandmaster of the Masons sealed a time capsule with the city directory and newspapers in a metal box in the stone.

The Sacramento Bee announced in August that:

The new $100,000 Napa post office will be ready for occupancy about November 1st. This has been announced by Postmaster James Gillies. [$100,000 in 1933 is about 2.4 million in 2024 dollars]

NVMP | April 2024 17

The Napa Register noted that:

Fred Pond, CWA director in Napa County, tomorrow will occupy room 13 in the new Napa Post Office building, where his headquarters are to be established.

CWA, Civil Works Administration, operated from about November 1933 to April 1934, employing about 4 million jobless workers. From Room l3, CWA initiated l7 projects, offering much needed work to 399 Napans.

The year ended with the Register reporting that Napa Post Office Handling Holiday Rush in Fine Style:

For decades since, our post office centered the town, a place to run into friends and make friends of strangers. It cracked from the devastating earthquake in 2014, and efforts to demolish it were unsuccessful. Let’s cherish what we had: Downtown Napa Post Office, 1933-2014.

The Christmas rush was in full swing today at the Napa Post Office. With 13 extra carriers and clerks hired for the peak period, the volume of mail and parcel post is being handled efficiently and without confusion, Postmaster James Gillies said. The public is getting quick attention in package mailings at the post office, and the waiting lines which formed at the old post office will not be present this year. This situation has been remedied by having clerks on duty at three windows, and a weighing clerk who also sells stamps in the corridor. Postmaster Gillies has installed a new permanent mailbox on the sidewalk in front of the post office for the special accommodation of motorists. The box can be tilted and mail can be deposited in it without necessity of having to step out of the automobile.

I never thought my father would prefer someone else’s cooking.

But after moving in to The Watermark at Napa Valley, he enjoys steaks exactly as he’s always liked them and has even added Mediterranean flatbreads and fresh salmon with seasoned asparagus to his list of favorites. Honoring the Service & Sacrifice of America’s Four-Legged Fighters WARRIOR DOGS:

Napa Valley Museum Yountville celebrates the opening of another world-premiere exhibition, WARRIOR DOGS: Honoring the Service & Sacrifice of America’s Four-Legged Fighters, presented in partnership with the Tug McGraw Foundation. The exhibition will be on display in the Main Gallery through August 25, 2024.

This emotional, inspiring exhibition takes a deep dive into the heroic

partnership between military dogs, their trainers and handlers and veterinarians, and other soldiers with whom they serve. The exhibition includes 17 life-size wooden sculptures by acclaimed artist James Mellick from his “Wounded Warrior Dog” project. On display are Cairo, who deployed to Afghanistan with the U.S. Navy SEAL Team, and the debut of Mellick’s sculpture of Torque, the Huey Helicopter dog who represents the

4,000 canines who did not return from Vietnam after the war. A kidfriendly “petting dog” sculpture by James Mellick is also included.

Visitors of all ages will learn about the history of dogs in combat, about puppies “born to be brave,” their selection, training and specialized combat gear, and the handlers and trainers who make them battle-ready. Discover, through rare photos and stories, the extraordinary bonds warrior dogs share with the armed forces they serve and protect. A portion of the exhibition is dedicated to working dogs serving with Veterans suffering from PostTraumatic Stress, First Responders, Law Enforcement Firefighters, and other civilian forces.

“Warrior Dogs shines a light on the training, bravery and the bond they share with the U.S. Armed Forces they serve alongside. To be able to tell their stories, with the support of the Napa Valley Museum, is a true honor. Through Warrior Dogs we

are giving back. It is a thank you to all the Military Working Dogs and their handlers for their dedication and service,” says Jennifer Brusstar, Co-Founder and President of The Tug McGraw Foundation.

Laura Rafaty, Executive Director of Napa Valley Museum Yountville, explains, “The Museum is excited to present another original exhibition, particularly one that honors and we hope resonates with our Veterans Home neighbors here in Yountville. The Museum team are all dedicated dog lovers, so the chance to tell this story, and to honor the role of dogs in service of our country, has been incredibly moving for all of us working on its creation. It is a very emotional exhibition, with some very serious content, but also including kid-friendly elements like a petting dog sculpture for kids. We are so grateful to our partners at the Tug McGraw Foundation and to America’s Forgotten Heroes for gathering an amazing array of gear used by military working dogs in training

and combat. And we are thrilled to bring James Mellick’s moving ‘wounded warrior dog’ sculptures to California for the first time. We believe this exhibition is going to be one of the most inspiring and emotionally satisfying ones we’ve ever presented.”

Uncle Bully’s Surf Skool

When a global pandemic decimates the tourism industry across the Hawaiian Islands, it means no travel, no tourists and no surf lessons for the kids.

Maui surf instructor and life coach Bull Kotter (affectionately known as “Uncle Bully”), suddenly found his small business pushed to the brink. He turns to his community, not for help or a handout, but to give back.

A new documentary short about the life of Bull Kotter is holding its theatrical premier, April 12-14, at the Cameo Cinema in St. Helena. Each of the three screenings will be followed by talk-backs featuring the director/producers (Inflatable Film) and Kotter in attendance. The film is 40-minutes in length and rated PG-13. For tickets, visit: CameoCinema.com/movie/unclebullys-surf-school.

Kotter had been mentoring underserved and homeless youth with free surf lessons in the Lahaina encampments while the pandemic was forcing schools, kids and daily life to dramatically adjust. “Homelessness is very rampant in our area,” said Kotter on a recent ‘Good Morning America’ interview.

“I saw this as an opportunity to build something community strong.”

When the fires hit Maui on August 8, Kotter’s Lahaina home and business were destroyed leaving him and wife Ashley homeless among the thousands who continue to experience the tragedy.

“Life is the most precious gift we have,” shared Kotter. “We lost everything but all of that can be replaced.”

“Being in the water with the kids is my ‘happy place,’” Kotter said. “It’s about giving in to the sense of love and acceptance and using the ocean as a way of venting and finding joy again. I don’t feel homeless if I have the ocean that takes care of me. As long as I have this, I’m feeling like a king!”

Mayhem Poets

In celebration of National Poetry Month, E & M Presents welcomes the Mayhem Poets, Sunday, April 28, at the Yountville Community Center, with performances at 1pm and 3pm. Shows are appropriate for ages 8 and up. For tickets, visit: EandMPresents.org.

During a recent interview, Mason Granger, a 20-year veteran of the troupe (along with Scott Raven and Mikumari Caiyhe), shared some tips for enjoying this new-to-Napa Valley, interactive experience.

“One great thing about a Mayhem Poets show is the ‘sneak attack’ effect, where the

to see or they think it’s going to be three guys standing on stage reading poetry for an hour.”

“Then, when the show starts, and they see this poetry/comedy/hip hop hybrid thing happening, that’s when they light up like, ‘Oh, this is FOR ME!” And then to the parents who are the ones paying for the tickets, I promise it’s for YOU too. Like a Pixar movie except it’s three guys from New Jersey.”

“The most fun parts for me are when the tiny moments land with an audience. Our show is full of winks and nods in addition to the traditional poetry snaps and claps. The show is mostly scripted with moments of improvisation built in. Also, when you’ve been performing for young audiences for as long as we have, you learn that punchlines are forever evolving. We always keep it fresh and keep it fun, for both the audience and ourselves.”

“Our shows are comprised of spoken word, stand-up comedy, and hip hop, then … the rest. Some poems are funny, some are serious, some are silly and some are inspiring, just like life. We all contain multitudes, and by the end of the show, we want people to feel like they got what they came for and got to reconnect with a side of themselves they never would’ve guessed.”

3RD ANNUAL

The Napa Table

SATURDAY, JUNE 8 AT 5PM

The 400 tickets to the 2023 Napa Table, only the second year it was held, sold out in just a day and a half. Why, you ask?

“It’s a party with a purpose,” said Peter Triolo from Archer Hotel, “and a great party at that.” Peter is also President of the Downtown Napa Association (DNA), which organizes the event, and is very involved in every aspect of it. “Where else can you sit down at a 250 foot-long table with 400 friends and enjoy great food from half a dozen quality restaurants, dozens of amazing wines, entertainment, and raise over $50,000 for the Food Bank?” said Peter. “The Napa Table has a tremendous community feel. You’ll run into lots of people you know, and if you don’t know anybody, you definitely will before the night is over.”

Tickets will again be $295, and go on sale at 12 noon on April 1. Use the QR code shown to order. And seriously – don’t put it off thinking you can get tickets the following week.

While some aspects of the event, including a new location on Main Street, will be different, much will remain the same. “We asked a lot of people what needed changing,” said Peter. “What we heard was, ‘If it isn’t broken, why fix it?’”

The event begins at 5PM on June 8 with a reception at Arch and Tower, at the corner of Third and Soscol. It’s a beautiful stone building situated right on the Napa River, directly across from Veterans Park. “The Arch and Tower folks will pour celebrated wines, paired with delicious hors d’oeuvres,” said Bill LaLiberte, the Executive Director of the DNA. “It will be both indoors and out,

with the Napa River serving as back drop for both.”

At 6 PM, the crowd will cross the Third Street Bridge to Main Street, where the Napa Table will be set. “The full menu with a vegetarian option will be on the website, but we can promise you a meal to remember from some of the best restaurants in in Downtown Napa,” said Bill. “Last year we served both plated and family style, which was well received. And this is Napa after all, so you know the wines will be exceptional.”

A short, live auction, featuring Liam Mayclem as auctioneer, will take place during the dinner service as well as an online auction, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Food Bank. “I may be shooting too high, but I’d love to see us double last year’s Food Bank donation,” said Bill. The online auction items will be at DoNapa.com, so people can view and bid beforehand. “Timewise, the live auction is a small part of the event, but very important,” said Bill. While most of the ticket sales will offset event costs, some will help fund the Napa Christmas Parade. “It’s all part of the community aspect of the Napa Table.”

As soon as dinner is finished, diners are invited to continue the evening in Veterans Park for more dessert and wines. DJ Adam will provide music that will have you dancing, or you can enjoy visiting with fellow guests. It will be the perfect cap to fine evening.

None of this would be possible without the support of The Table’s generous Premier Sponsors. Both the downtown property owners, through the Property and Business Improvement District, and the City’s lodging establishments, through the Tourism Improvement District, have generously supported The Napa Table for all three years. “It’s one of the things I love about Napa,” said Peter. “When there is a need, everybody steps up to help. It’s even better when we can have a good time doing it.”
