Integrative dentistry recognizes that oral infections and toxins can cause oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. For example, cavities, root canal infections, and periodontal disease can be a source of toxins that travel elsewhere in the body. Some examples include cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, and pregnancy complications. Not only is it important to know how to test for these stressors, but also how to mitigate them.

HEALTHY MOUTH, HEALTHY BODY

Every day, thousands of people succumb to preventable diseases. As a result, many people have been integrating preventative, functional medicine into their wellness routines and medical care. Functional dentistry builds on this idea, applying a whole-body approach to dental care.

A whole-body approach or Integrative Dentistry means treating the whole patient rather than just the patient’s mouth or teeth. Dr. Azizi takes an interdisciplinary approach to healthcare. She views the patient holistically, mind, body, and soul. This approach is not only used in her comprehensive diagnosis but also for reducing the anxiety of dental treatment. The doctors at Vineyard Dental have been trained using various methods, such as acupuncture for TMJ pain reduction and anxiety.

Educating her patients so that they can be actively involved in their healthcare decisions is very important to her.

“The traditional way of dentistry is to restore and repair teeth and gums,” Dr. Azizi said. But now, we need to concentrate on education, prevention, and maintenance more than just drilling and filling teeth. The initial step toward any treatment should be to find the underlying cause, which often is nutrition and habits. ”

For Dr. Azizi, nutrition is an important aspect of oral and systemic health. She studied nutrition at UC Davis before becoming a dentist. She doesn’t shy away from dietary conversations, as they help her achieve her practice goal of addressing “the complete foundation of health” for her patients. Nutrition and digestion start in the mouth, and it’s the gateway to the rest of the body.

• TMJ & TMD Therapy – Jaw joint disorders relate to the bones that connect the jaw to the skull. Difficulties can impact your speech, eating, and general comfort. TMJ and TMD therapy are usually the best solutions. These can improve the function and esthetic of your mouth as well as your health and well-being.

We’ve spoken about how things have shifted for your patients – but how have you been moving through this personally? During the shutdowns and heaviest parts of the pandemic, a lot of us found solace in our hobbies. Is there sourdough starter in your kitchen?

Dr. Azizi: No sourdough starter – but my gardening skills were elevated to edible flowers and exotic greens! I was able to focus more on my fitness practices and became certified with ACE as a personal fitness trainer. As an integrative dentist I find healthy practices are part of my personal life as well as my work.

Your health is imperative for a long, happy life. Adopting a complete approach to whole-body wellness should be a priority. Take control of your health and happiness with treatments that are designed to support your mind, body, and soul.

Napa's Dynamic Gay Power Couple: Making an Impact on Napa Valley

Napa Valley is known for its stunning vineyards, world-class cuisine, and thriving art scene. It’s also home to some of the most dynamic and inspiring individuals. One such power couple is Ervin Hechavarria, a realtor of 22 years, and William Hasson II, MD, AAHIVS, a family medicine physician and HIV specialist. Since relocating to Napa, Ervin and William have made a lasting impact on Napa’s business and LGBTQ communities.

Ervin and William’s journey began in May 2017 when they met in Florida. Ervin was already a successful realtor and William was in the final stages of training to become a physician. On their first date, both knew they had found true love. As Ervin explains, “I was so confident in my feelings that halfway through the date I invited William to come to Havana, Cuba with me and my family.” William purchased his airline tickets that evening. Three weeks later in Havana, Ervin proposed. William said “yes,” and five months later they both said “I do.”

In 2020, William was asked to join Kaiser Permanente Napa Medical Offices. Although he was eager to accept, he was hesitant to leave their families on the east coast. “Family is everything to us,” says William. “We couldn’t imagine being so far away from those we love.” But after much research and discussion, they decided that Napa was the right move for them. Because William has a passion for LGBTQ and HIV care, and the LGBTQ community in Napa was vastly underserved, William’s medical practice grew quickly. His presence filled a gap, and the area now has a physician who understands LGBTQ concerns and can support their medical needs.

Meanwhile, Ervin immersed himself in the community. He joined Leadership Napa Valley, the Rotary Club (Napa Sunrise), and the Napa, Yountville, and Hispanic Chambers of Commerce. Additionally, both Ervin and William became active in numerous causes and nonprofits, including LGBTQ Connection and NEWS (where William currently sits on the board).

As a result, Ervin established deep connections within the area and quickly built his real estate business. “I’ve always been a people-person and relationship builder,” he says. “I have a genuine passion for helping others and doing whatever it takes to support my clients.” No wonder he has become one of Napa’s most sought-after agents! Today, Ervin works with Homestead Real Estate and enjoys helping clients from all walks of life make the best real estate investment decisions. When they’re not working or volunteering, Ervin and William enjoy all the food, wine, and cultural opportunities Napa has to offer. And even though they are 3,000 miles away from family, they have established a diverse “family of friends” and regularly host gatherings in their new home.

For the future, William is focused on growing his medical practice and helping more people achieve their health goals, while Ervin aims to get involved in local government and take an active role in shaping the city’s future. Ultimately, this power couple is dedicated to making Napa an even better place to live and work for everyone. They are an inspiring example of what two people can achieve when they come together to pursue their passions and make a difference.

REMEMBER OUR FALLEN MEN

The Daughters of the American Revolution is a national organization formed by women in 1890, to keep the memory of the wars, the patriots and the service needed to support our country when in crisis. Our goal is to educate and keep the public eye on those historic deeds by our military and to also provide service to our active servicemen and veterans.

On March 29, 1973, the United States formally pulled out of Vietnam. 58,220 men from America had lost their lives. Young men, never to tell their own story or to live their lives. Of those men, twenty-eight were from Napa County.

Napa’s Vineyard Trails Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution have not forgotten them.

Their heroism and valor will always be remembered. Below are the names of those local patriots who answered the call of duty and sacrificed their lives in combat.

Most of these men were right out of high school or college, responding to a call that could not be refused. Many of those who came home still wear the scars that continue to haunt them. Some have come home and been able to pick up the pieces. Many of them became leaders and successful benefactors to our County.

We thank you all, for your service, your sacrifice, and your survival. Please take a minute to say each name aloud and thank each man for his service and sacrifice.

PLAYING BINGO

I N N A P A

The woman can hear the beating of her heart as she waits for the man to speak. She feels the thrill of pending fulfillment. She shouts with all her might, “BINGO!”

This scenario and others like it play out every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening at the Bingo Emporium at Zinfandel Hall at the Napa Expo, which during the fair is the Bunny House. The groups who run Bingo to raise funds for kids’ programs rent the hall from the

Denise Parks, the general manager of the Saturday night games. “Friday profits go to Napa United Soccer; Saturday is for Napa High Band Boosters, and Sunday goes to the Vintage High Music Boosters. The monies from Saturday nights pay for things like instrument purchase and repairs, buses to out of town events and uniforms.

It also funds tour scholarships when the band travels and end-of-the-year

to play at a game at Cal Berkeley, the bus cost was $3,000. When Napa High changed their mascot, the school paid a portion of the cost to replace part of the band’s uniforms. The Boosters were responsible for the rest of the cost.”

“We usually have about 70 to 90 players,” she says. “We often have more people for special events. For instance, this past New Year’s Eve, 120 people braved the rain and cold.”

Denise, who is an accounting clerk in her professional life, says her group holds special events throughout the year that include complimentary dinners, drawings for prizes and high payout games.

Regular Bingo nights start at $25 per person for 18 games, which pay winners $250-$400. With a $40 buyin, the Turbo machine is included, which easily plays 72 more cards for players with the push of a button. Then there’s Flash, games of chance that sell for $1 each, which are like California Scratchers. The winnings for these games range from $100$1,199. Friday games start at 6:30 pm, Saturday games begin at 6:15 pm, and Sunday starts at 4 pm.

Volunteer workers love the atmosphere and the people.

“I began volunteering while my daughter was in band and, even though she graduated in 2019, I kept helping,” says Denise.

Heather Watson-Troedson, a 6th grade teacher at Browns Valley School, began volunteering several years ago. “I’d never played Bingo and

it seemed mysterious. But I knew it was a major funding opportunity for the Napa High Instrumental Music Program when my son started in the 9th grade. Even though my child graduated and is no longer in the program, we enjoy it and have fun. My husband and I volunteer on a regular basis on Saturday nights. I started by selling Flash and now work in different positions. My husband is often one of the Callers on the stand announcing the numbers.”

“We like to go because of the community camaraderie,” says Heather. “These are dedicated people who are happy to support the kids. When people win, they often choose to give a donation back to the program. The die-hards would go through sleet and hail to play.”

“Napa High Band Bingo is truly blessed to have a core group of seasoned volunteers who support our program; some of these individuals are Alumni, while others have no connections with Napa High,” says Denise. “Within our parent base, we also have amazing individuals who sign up and volunteer to keep our Bingo fundraiser successful and running. We are all working to make a difference for our students and program needs.”

Superstitions have a high priority with many players.

“They want the Flash that’s fifth from the bottom, or third from the top, or only from loose packs,” Heather explains. “Many have tchotchkes or lucky items around them when they play.

They may have a special spot to sit, or they only play specific games.”

“Mainly they come for the friendships they make playing and have been coming for 20 years. They check in with each other. The doors open at 3 pm on Saturdays, so there’s a lot of social time for visiting and catching up on the week.”

“One reason my husband and I still volunteer for Bingo is because of the diverse group of players we have come to know, and it makes for an enjoyable evening. We truly have fun; it’s our Date Night.”

There is no alcohol or smoking. Vintage hall is divided into North and South halls, one of which was used when smoking was allowed, but now smokers go outside. A café called B Spot opened last October, run by Tim Brown, who has worked in restaurants throughout Napa Valley.

“The food is really good and at a reasonable price,” Heather says. “Before the café opened, we used to have a food truck or sell pizza by the slice. Players are allowed to bring in their own food, too.”

The age range of players is across the board, from 30 to 90. Often, a player’s birthday is celebrated with cake, festive tablecloths and decorations provided by their friends.

Some veteran players tape together Bingo papers, so they play six to eight cards at the same time.

Depending on the game, seasoned players have a system in their head. “It’s all about patterns,” says Heather.

“You must make sure you’re looking at your cards and paying attention as you’re dabbing the numbers to see if you have a Bingo. When I’ve played, I don’t go overboard, my speed is four cards.”

Between the basic buy-in, the Turbo machine, Flash and specific games, how does a newcomer keep it all straight?

Denise chuckles. “New players are given a sheet that is an introduction to Bingo Lingo. It does sound complicated and can get a bit confusing with terms like Hot Ball,

Napa Bingo

Drum Major, Jackpot and Wild Numbers. Our workers spot the new people and stop by as often as they can to answer questions. Our other players are generous and help the new players around them. Once you’ve played a couple of times, it gets easier.”

“Napa High Band Bingo started in 1983, so this year we’re celebrating 40 years,” says Denise. “We will have a special event on May 6 with dinner, drawings and lots of winnings.”

She says their biggest challenge is that many people don’t know that there’s

a Bingo Emporium in Napa. “They think they must go out of town to play. That’s not the case. We need to spread the word.”

Denise says there are a lot of reasons people like playing Bingo. “It’s the excitement, especially when you’re close to winning. It’s full of energy. Of course, they’re happy when they win. I’d encourage everyone to try it. Come here to be with friends, relax and get something from the café. If you win, it’s a bonus. If not, at least you’re not sitting at home staring at the TV.”

Q&A: How can I make the most of my inheritance?

Most heirs face many complex decisions — and potential tax consequences. These insights can help you avoid common mistakes and make smarter choices.

An inheritance can seem like a mixed blessing, coming as it often does after the loss of a loved one. At such an emotional time, it can be difficult to think through what you need to do to manage the gift. But even if your parents decide to give you your inheritance, or a portion of it, while they’re still living — as many parents increasingly prefer to do — you’ll likely have many questions, says Kevin Hindman, managing director and wealth strategies executive, Bank of America Private Bank.

You might want to schedule a conversation with a financial advisor and your personal tax professional in advance to discuss the potential tax consequences and how the gift could help you pursue your goals. It can also make sense to talk with your parents about their hopes for your financial future. Read the insights below for a better sense of how to prepare for the many issues heirs can face.

Q: How do I begin a conversation with my parents about their estate plans?

A: It’s not necessary to ask how much money your parents might leave you. Start the conversation by asking about their values and what wealth means to them. That can lead to productive conversations about the role an inheritance could play in your financial future and what your parents’ expectations might be. This sort of conversation also provides you with the opportunity to share your preferences and priorities. For instance, if there’s a family business, or even a family vacation home, and you have no interest in owning either, be upfront about that. When everyone understands the expectations, the outcomes tend to be better for everyone.

Q: I just found out I’m receiving an inheritance. How quickly do I need to make decisions?

A: You’ll likely have some time before you receive the funds; depending on the complexity of the estate, the probate process, if applicable, generally takes at least six months to a year. That’s often for the best. Too often beneficiaries make large purchases or sweeping decisions that they later regret. Even paying off debt right away may not be in your best interests, says Hindman. “Does it make sense to pay off a mortgage at a rate below 3%? You might do better than a 3% return elsewhere,” he notes.

Instead, consider setting up a meeting with your advisor to discuss your competing goals and how you could manage your newfound wealth to help you pursue

them. Bank of America Wealth Strategist Victor Diune suggests looking at four buckets — spending needs, short-term goals, long-term goals and philanthropy.

“How you allocate your inheritance to these buckets depends on your situation,” he says. If you have young children, a portion could go toward college costs in the long-term bucket. But if you’re looking at renovating your home or relocating, you’ll probably want to put those funds into a short-term bucket and make sure they’re easily available.

Q: What if my inheritance isn’t in cash?

A: Most inheritances aren’t, says Hindman. You might be named the beneficiary of a retirement account — or you could inherit the family home, for instance. If you’ve inherited a tax-deferred account like an IRA or a 401(k) account and you’re a non-spouse designated beneficiary, 1 you’ll have 10 years after the death of the original account owner in which to fully liquidate the account (depending on your age relative to the original account owner and certain other circumstances). The rules are complex, and you’ll want to consult with your tax professional to help you understand them and decide on a strategy to address them.

“Things can get more complicated when converting real assets such as a family home or business into cash, especially when multiple beneficiaries are involved,” notes Hindman. If there are disputes over a will, it could take years for the issues to be resolved. In the bestcase scenario, parents have worked with their advisor and estate attorney to construct a will or trust in such a way that its provisions account for the beneficiaries’ desires — for instance, which child wants to keep the family home or work in the family business.

Q: How could my inheritance affect my taxes?

A: For tax purposes, inheritance generally isn’t considered income, but there are some exceptions. If you inherit certain tax-deferred accounts like a traditional IRA or 401(k) account, you’ll pay taxes on your withdrawals, including RMDs, as ordinary income at whatever your rate is.

When it comes to taxable accounts and other assets like real estate, there’s the possibility you’ll owe no income tax, because the cost basis of the asset gets stepped up (or down) to current fair market value upon its owner’s death, thereby wiping out any taxable capital gains on appreciated assets, says Hindman.

Keep in mind that if you inherit an asset that provides income — say, a trust that pays out annually — it may put you in a higher marginal tax bracket.

Q: Could my inheritance require changes to my own estate plan?

A: Whenever your net worth changes, you should update or revise your estate plan, says Diune. You may need to consider how to protect certain newly acquired assets — for instance, a family home or business that’s been passed down to you that you want someday to go to your children.

“Ask yourself, if something happens to you, how will your assets flow to the people you care about?” he adds. A trust might be one way to accomplish that aim. To learn more, you might want to engage with an advisor about ways you might want to use your inheritance to further your own legacy — and help make your beneficiaries’ future more secure.

1 An eligible designated beneficiary (EDB) is a surviving spouse, disabled or chronically ill individual, an individual who is not more than 10 years younger than the decedent, or a child of the account owner who has not reached age 21. Distribution rules differ based on the date of death, whether or not the beneficiary is an EDB, and whether or not the original account owner died before or after their required beginning date for Required Minimum Distributions.

SAVE THE DATE. ACTUALLY, SAVE TWO OF THEM…

You’ll want to save both of these: June 10th is the date of what now looks like the annual Napa Table event – a chance to sit down for dinner with 400 people, at one long table in the middle of First Street in Downtown Napa. The second date is April 1st at Noon – that’s when tickets for the event go on sale. That date is important – last year, tickets sold out in one day.

Last year’s Table was held in celebration of Napa’s 175th anniversary. It was intended as a one-off (well, it could have been scheduled again for the 200th anniversary) but it turned out to be possibly the most well received event ever held in Downtown. The evening began with two receptions, one at Mia Carta and the other at Sky & Vine, with hors d’oeuvres from Hog Island Oysters, Bounty Hunter, Eiko’s, Contimo and Oenotri, along with dozens of wines. Dinner started with gazpacho from Grace’s Table, followed by a Wedge salad from Cole’s Chop House, then the main course of Paella from ZuZu served alongside grilled vegetables from Norman Rose/Azzurro Pizzeria, accompanied with fresh bread from The Model Bakery. All of it was served with a seemingly unlimited supply of great wines.

And for dessert? Diners enjoyed generous samplings from Monday Bakery, Sweetie Pies, Anette’s Chocolates and Vintage Sweet Shoppe at four different locations – Acumen Wines, California Brandy House, Buena Vista Wines and Arbaretum. If you left either hungry or thirsty, it was on you.

For the organizers, the event had a few behind the scenes hiccups that are unavoidable for a first-time event, but no one seemed to either notice or mind. The only comments that were heard were “You have to do this event again next year.” Call it “a celebration of Napa’s 176th anniversary,” but it is definitely an affair not to miss. Again, mark your calendar.

And don’t forget to circle Noon, April 1st, which is the date and time the tickets will go on sale at DoNapa. com. Seriously, you don’t want to miss this one.

This year’s menu is still in development, but you’ll be able to preview it before buying tickets. So far though, it looks scrumptious. If you were disappointed not to get tickets last year, don’t let it happen again!

GONZALES Jennifer

TAKES THE REINS AS POLICE CHIEF

“Integrity is key in being a police chief or for any law enforcement position,” says Napa’s Police Chief Jennifer Gonzales. “We all must project a standard above minimum. The public expects and should receive superior service. I ensure that our officers know what

Jennifer, which is how she introduces herself, says she had a sense and appreciation for rules and order as early as grade school. When she was a junior in high school, she took part in a program called “Walk a Mile in My Shoes,” which matched high school students with people in different professions for a day.

“I was paired with Lucy Carlton, the police chief of Los Altos. Although I was too young for a ride-along in a patrol car, I got hooked. We’ve stayed in touch ever since. She came to my swearing in as a Napa police officer and came again when I was sworn in as chief. I’ve had (law enforcement) mentors all my life who took me in and guided me.”

She became a community service officer at CSU Chico for two and a half years, then joined the Police Academy. When she started applying to police departments, the process was competitive with few openings and many applicants. Chico’s police chief “took a chance” and hired her. She worked there in several roles for 20 years.

Among her many educational accomplishments, she has a master’s degree in Behavioral Science: Negotiation and Conflict Management from CSU Dominguez Hills and a bachelor’s degree in Latin American Studies from CSU Chico. Jennifer also was part of the 271st class of the FBI National Academy.

“My biggest surprise and disappointment now are the lack of people who want to

join this profession. I can understand and justify the reasons; there’s more money elsewhere, other jobs are less dangerous, and so on. There are many alternative law enforcement positions, though. We need dispatchers and community service officers.”

Napa City Manager Steve Potter worked for 31 years with the Napa Police Department and spent three years as police chief. He agrees that staffing the department is a primary concern now. “This is a challenging time for recruiting people into a law enforcement profession. Communities have so many needs—mental health, the ability to have civil conversations, homelessness, changing laws and so on, and not everyone is willing to or able to do the job. Keeping positions filled and adding to our depth of quality officers is a number one priority and a challenge.”

We asked what he felt were the qualities of a good chief. “A police chief needs to have strong morals and ethics, a community caretaker attitude, a vision of what community needs will be and where policing in America is going,” states Steve in an email. “The chief should be able to work with all people have the leadership skills needed to lead a diverse group of officers and professional staff through critical situations, disasters and through normal daily activities in the community they serve.”

“Jennifer shows a great deal of care and compassion for the employees in her charge and the members of the community. She is highly educated and has a

community service mindset. She possesses the skills and abilities to handle the job.”

“In Napa, we are blessed,” Jennifer says. “Many community members know officers by name. They live here, their children go to school here, they are coaches, scout leaders, they stop by block parties. The community shouldn’t know the officers by just their title.”

“This area also has a tightknit group of chiefs and sheriffs who work together with probation, the college and upvalley, all ready to take on common concerns.”

Napa isn’t without its problems, though, some of which we may associate only with big city life. “The two biggest concerns are Fentanyl and ghost guns,” says Jennifer. “Using drugs recreationally

leads to overdosing and death. The whole family is impacted. In part, it’s a mental health component because people self-medicate. We meet with Napa County Health & Human Services monthly to discuss mental health issues.”

“Ghost weapons are not safe and they’re in the hands of people who shouldn’t have them. We must get to the manufacturers of illegal weapons. We need to train people about the danger. We’re seeking a way to talk to parents about them and create awareness.”

What does she wish the public knew about law enforcement?

“That we are humans before we are cops,” says Jennifer. “People see the uniform, the vest, the badge and the belt. Those are tools we use to do our job. Everyone has tools for their jobs. Our tools help protect and serve the community. Law enforcement is a noble profession. We are your neighbors, your relatives and we make mistakes. But

we have high integrity and expectations of ourselves as well as accountability.”

“What I like most about my job is the connection with amazing people, every day, in the building or in the community. I enjoy interaction. The cool part about the job is that I talk straight and hear it straight when someone is not happy about something. We teach our officers about things like mindfulness and meditation, which 30 years ago would have never happened. It makes for better policing when they can control their energy and mind. It’s critical to their safety.”

“We train beyond the state standards in principle skills that are less lethal, like diffusion tactics. We’re human-centric.”

The department also uses the assistance of comfort dogs from the volunteer group St. John’s Comfort Dog Team to help in emergencies, if an employee needs help or in critical incidents.

What does Jennifer do in her off-hours?

“I’m a Star Wars nerd,” she says with a laugh. “I know Star Wars is a fictional movie, but I can see leadership, public trust, choosing right from wrong, and finding motivational moments in it. Plus, Star Wars is an easy way to build rapport with kids or folks who are not immediately comfortable interacting with the uniforms. If I can pull out a sticker and ask a child, ‘Do you know who this is?’ and they reply, ‘R2D2,’ I’ve made a connection.”

She wants her officers to participate and mingle at local events, too.

“We’re there at the Oxbow Stage and at BottleRock not to arrest people but to be ambassadors. The community wants that. I love Napa parades and events, interacting with folks and hanging out. It’s why we’re here; to be part of the community.”
