ineyard Dental, which has been a part of our Napa community now for over 20 years, is no stranger to change. During the last few years, like many of our beloved places, they have had to pivot quickly to meet the evolving condition of a pandemic, all while continuing to provide the high levels of care and attention to detail. We recently spoke with founder Dr. Nancy Azizi about how their specific style of dentistry is uniquely set up to meet the needs of its patients. Something I’ve always appreciated is that when I step inside the lounge of Vineyard Dental, I forget for just a moment that I’m heading into a dental appointment. This month marks the two-year anniversary of the Coronavirus shutdowns of 2020. Thankfully, last month we received the good news that the decline in COVID19 cases in California resulted in the softening of mask mandates around the state. Napa County has followed suit, and in many public settings mask mandates for those that are vaccinated against the Coronavirus have been lifted. What does this mean for us as locals? For me, I feel very

optimistic. While I already have a tendency to view most situations positively, even my sunny disposition has been tested over the past couple of years. The data is now showing that the numbers of life-threatening infections have been on the decline. Perhaps we really will move from a pandemic, into an endemic stage. The local requirements are that unvaccinated people are required to wear masks in all indoor public settings. Fully vaccinated

individuals are recommended to continue indoor masking when the risk might be high. There has also been an increase in the number of people at a “Mega Event” to 1,000 for indoor events and 10,000 for outdoor events. This all sounds pretty positive and doable, if we all do our part! We can again shop, dine out, taste wine, socialize, be entertained even in a big setting! Local merchants, restaurants, wineries, entertainment venues and other small businesses that require human interaction, have clearly suffered tremendous losses for two years. Now is the time for all of us to choose to support our community by doing two things: spending locally and interacting with others with gratitude, kindness and smiles. This month, these are some things that you may want to consider:

- Go to see a movie in an actual theater. Whether a small cinema Upvalley, or a modern large venue in Napa—I am craving hot buttered popcorn, a state-of-the-art sound system, cushy chairs or loveseats and the audience reaction that can only be experienced in an actual movie house.

- Alleys have been open, but I haven’t been since 2019. I am gathering my people and heading to the lanes!

- Plan a day of shopping, to check out the local wares. Yes, it will be nice to thank in person and smile at the checkers that have been on the front lines. Yet, it would really be a treat to browse a store, and have a conversation with a shopkeeper, perhaps testing out products or trying on clothes. It’s been far too long—I want to continue to support our community, rather than shop online.

Restaurants continue to need our support, patience and kindness. While I was a frequent “to go” customer over the past two years, I am looking forward to more meeting up with others to eat out. I can’t recall the last time I had an actual “business meeting” at a restaurant or met up for coffee - it was

- Ahhhh… the spa. How I’ve missed that kind of pampering. Even though for me, spa treatments are usually reserved for special occasions. Plenty of day spas dot the valley, so book a facial or massage.

Four times you should always ask: How will this affect my taxes? Considering the tax implications of key financial moves could save you money. Here is what Merrill suggests you know. We make big financial decisions all the time. But we don’t always ask ourselves: How will this affect my taxes? Here are four times when remembering to consider the tax consequences — and possibly adjusting your strategy — could make a difference. 1. Buying or selling a home Did you know that you could take advantage of a capital gains tax exclusion on the first $250,000 of profit — $500,000 if you are married and file jointly — when selling your primary residence? You and your spouse, if you are married, must have lived in the house for at least two of the past five years. With the maximum capital gains tax rate currently at 20%, that exclusion could save you $100,000 or more. (The exclusion can only be used once within the prior two years.) A move to consider: Staying until the two-year threshold has been met, as the capital gains exclusion applies only to your primary residence. Don’t forget: You can add the cost of home improvements you make before you sell to the cost basis of the home. The higher the basis, the smaller your gain — and the less you would have to pay taxes on. 2. Paying for healthcare See if your employer offers a highdeductible health plan that qualifies you to make contributions to a qualifying health savings account. When you enroll in a high-deductible health plan, you may be able to contribute to a health savings account (HSA). Your contributions to an HSA are tax-deductible, or may be made by pre-tax salary deductions if allowed by your employer. Earnings and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are federal income tax-free. A move to consider: If your HSA allows you to invest the money you contribute, its potential tax-free growth could help you pay for healthcare costs as you age and even cover the cost of Medicare premiums. Don’t forget: Money contributed to an employer-sponsored health flexible

spending account (FSA) for health care expenses offers another way to lower your federal taxable income. Participating in certain types of FSAs may have an impact on your eligibility for HSA contributions. 3. Selling stocks and bonds “In most cases, there are tax consequences when you sell investments to realize gains. But not all investments are taxed at the same rate,” says tax accountant Vinay Navani of WilkinGuttenplan.* Bond interest and dividends from real estate investment trusts (REITs) are generally taxed as ordinary income, at rates currently as high as 37% (with a proposal before Congress to raise the top rate to 39.6% for 2022 for high earners). Qualified dividends and gains from the sale of investments owned for more than a year may be eligible for long-term capital gains rates, which currently are capped at 20% for most taxpayers, plus an additional 3.8% net investment income tax. A move to consider: In general it is better to have non-income-producing investments, such as growth stocks, in your taxable accounts, and investments that generate income, such as corporate bonds, in tax-deferred accounts. Don’t forget: It is possible to offset capital gains by selling investments that have dropped in value. You can generally deduct up to $3,000 (or $1,500 if married and filing separately) of capital losses in excess of capital gains per year from your ordinary income. 4. Investing for retirement With a traditional 401(k) plan, your contributions are made on a pre-tax basis, giving you immediate savings by reducing your federal taxable income. In addition, investment income in your account is not subject to federal taxes until money is taken out at retirement, when it is taxed as federal ordinary income. With a Roth 401(k), contributions are made with after-tax income, but then qualified withdrawals starting at age 59½ are potentially federal tax-free.

A move to consider: Splitting your contributions, saving enough in a traditional 401(k) plan to limit your taxable income and keep from rising into a higher tax bracket, then putting the rest in a Roth 401(k). Don’t forget: Be sure to contribute enough to your regular 401(k) to earn the maximum matching contribution from your employer. Because companies can only allocate matching contributions to a pre-tax account in your 401(k) plan, that means at least part of your money will be contributed on a pre-tax basis. Your employer can match your 401(k) contribution and place the matching contribution in a pre-tax account in your 401(k) plan, but cannot place the matching contribution into your Roth 401(k) account. This is just a sampling of the kinds of situations where you might benefit from being more tax-aware, notes Navani. “Remember, too, that tax laws change frequently, and anticipating future shifts in tax rates and rules could help to influence the financial decisions you make today.”

The 17th Annual (and final) Shannon Lemieux Memorial Aquatic Meet will be held April 2 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Vintage High School Pool. Participants in the meet will come from American Canyon, Justin-Siena, Napa, St. Helena and Vintage High Schools. “All the proceeds from the event go to the Shannon Lemieux Memorial Scholarship Fund, benefiting all Napa County High Schools,” says Dan Lemieux, Shannon’s father. “It’s been extremely successful since it started in 2005. We’ve raised about $500,000 so far and are pleased that all the money raised will continue in the Scholarship Fund.” “We want everyone to come out and see the kids. It’ll be a fun day,” continues Dan. “There’ll be fun relays, not timed – costume relays, cannonball contests, and the Marin Synchronized Swimming Team, which used to be the Redwood Empire Synchronized Swimming Team, will be there giving a demonstration.” “We have a great Silent Auction lined up, and everyone will enjoy it. Local restaurants and wineries have been

wonderful, spas and golf courses have contributed. You couldn’t find a more generous group of people.” Shannon passed away after a car accident in 2005 at the age of 17. She’d been active in dance, beginning at age four with the Napa Regional Dance Company. When she started at Justin-Siena High School, she took the skill and grace of her dance training and applied it to swimming and diving. She was named the most improved swimmer in her freshman and sophomore years. Dan and his wife Lori wanted the scholarship to mirror Shannon’s interests. “The first Memorial Aquatic Meet was organized by her coaches and teachers at Justin-Siena, where she’d been a Junior,” says Dan. “Mike Garibaldi was instrumental starting the aquatics meet and the first year it was held at Napa Valley College. I have to say, I had doubts at first that something of that magnitude could be pulled off. Our family was still in shock and not much use to them. But we realized the positives outweigh the hurt. The Meet continues on with everybody on deck having a great time.” Applicants for the scholarships must complete a short essay application on their philosophy of life. “Shannon wrote a beautiful essay on that subject when she was in school, so we thought it was appropriate. They must maintain a 3.0 GPA and have spent three years either on swim team, diving or water polo teams. The scholarships are $500 each, which are made out to their chosen college, 4-year or community college, trade school or any qualified school.” So far, the group has awarded 263 scholarships, amounting to $163,000. The balance between what they make on the fundraiser and the auction goes into the scholarship fund. Since it’s so successful, why is this the last year for the Memorial Aquatic Meet? “We are all volunteers. Basically, except for a few people who had to drop out for various reasons, we’ve had the same Board since 2005,” Dan says and chuckles

softly. “It’s a year-round project, making and reviewing the applications, designing and distributing fliers, getting permits and awards, collecting auction items and writing thank you letters. COVID put a damper on our efforts, and we didn’t hold the event for a couple of years for everyone’s health. That’s when we decided it was time to reevaluate. Frankly, we’re all getting older.” “When we started, our aim was to establish an ongoing scholarship fund and we’ve reached that goal. We hope perhaps the Memorial Meet will continue with others leading it.” “We have a tremendous amount of gratitude to our local community and the wineries, restaurants, spas and golf courses. They’ve been so generous and we’re grateful. We thank everyone involved. We’re glad it is a lasting scholarship fund. But this Shannon Lemieux Memorial Aquatic Meet Grand Finale will be bittersweet.”

The Napa Valley is blessed with the perfect soil and weather to grow wine grapes, but at one time, farmers in the Napa Valley raised a wide variety of crops, and small fruit and vegetable farms were common. Napa Valley Adult Education and Napa Valley College are joining forces to prepare a new generation of Small Scale Farmers to start their own businesses, while increasing crop diversity throughout the valley.

Simultaneously, students will take business classes from Napa Valley College. These classes will cover a range of topics, including: exploring markets and profit, access to capital, writing a business plan, social media and online marketing, financial planning, and QuickBooks.

Two other open spaces will used as a Teaching Orchard and for Small Livestock Production. Shawntel Ridgle, Director of Upper Valley Campus and Community Education, was instrumental in reimagining how the campus could better serve students in Napa County. Ridgle said she is “thrilled to offer this program to our community and play a role in diversifying the agricultural landscape of Napa Valley.” When the pilot farms mature in the spring and summer, students will sell their goods at local Farmers’ Markets and direct to retail outlets. The real strength of the program is realized in years two and three. As a second cohort of students start from the beginning on the Upper Valley Campus, the first cohort of students will continue taking classes at Napa Valley College, working toward an AS in Business Administration or Entrepreneurship while honing their farming skills by

Napa County Historical Society’s

Ask Dr. Sheli Smith for an interview and you’re in for a treat. She’s the Executive Director of the Napa County Historical Society and an anthropologist whose current focus is Napa, so you’ll get tidbits of Napa history that you wouldn’t get from somebody else. For example, asked how long her family has lived in Napa, she answers, “My grandfather, A.V. Smith, moved here and bought the stone mason business on Third Street next door to the fairgrounds in 1924. Newman & Wing, the original owners, built a lot of the bridges and buildings in town, as well as a lot of the mausoleums in Tulocay Cemetery. The first thing my grandfather did was move the business a block away to its current location on Silverado Trail at Five Points.” It makes for a much more interesting interview. Sheli knew she wanted to be an anthropologist from the time she was twelve. Her father was a geologist and spent years in Brazil. When Sheli was fourteen, her parents sent her to Haiti and South America to live with relatives. “People everywhere in the world develop their culture by where they live. It’s fascinating,” she said. She attended Siena High School (“Before it was Justin-Siena,” she points out) and the nuns encouraged her to pursue her passion. She did her undergraduate work at University of Arizona, in part

because her parents wanted their kids to attend a college at least 200 miles from home. As an anthropology major, students can pursue four tracks, one of which is archeology. She did a semester in Greece, and there met three women who became mentors. “This was in the seventies, and I’d never known women to sit down with martinis and talk archaeology.” Like the nuns from Siena, they encouraged her, warning that her life wasn’t going to be easy entering “a man’s world.” Sheli was interested in underwater archeology as a scientific illustrator. “It was definitely a field dominated by men, but I can draw,” she said with a smile. Her graduate studies were at Texas A&M, and she did her PhD work at the University of Pennsylvania. Her work has taken her all over the world. The only sea she hasn’t been in is the China Sea. “Yet,” she adds.

In 2005, Sheli got an opportunity to open an independent R&D educational facility in Columbus, Ohio, the mission of which was to develop new methods to engage teachers and kids to learn. The benefactor promised three years of support and funding, and it was too good for Sheli to refuse. She ended up staying until 2020, then decided it was time to move to Napa to be with family. “I offered to volunteer for the Historical Society at Goodman Library, and told them I’d clean floors or anything else they needed, but pointed out that I had forty years of museum experience.” Interim Executive Director, Liz Alessio, asked her to mentor her and to join the board. In 2021, Liz was ready to leave and Sheli became the Executive Director. The organization pursues a variety of funding sources, including rentals, memberships, grants, and sponsors. Sheli got to add to that right away by opening a gift shop, “Something that’s been

on everybody’s to-do list for twenty years.” “In some ways, I feel like a politician who’s at the end of their last term in office and no longer puts off what they want to do,” said Sheli. What she wants is to establish a network among all the museums in the valley, and to make the Historical Society a well-known show piece. “It takes a village to get this done, but the support is there.” She also has what she calls “a strong exhibit habit,” and will make sure the Museum does two interesting and intriguing exhibits a year. She feels an obligation to tell everyone’s story. To that end, they are hosting a “Hilos Visibles” (Visible Threads) this coming fall. The exhibit will showcase the Napa County Hispanic Network Quilt Project. “It’s beautiful work, an insight into someone’s life and an important part of our collective culture.” Other goals may seem quirky but appeal to her, such as reviving the Firemen’s Corn Booth. “That was always my first stop at the Fairgrounds! It is iconic Napa.” Attendance at the Historical Society increased from 5,000 to 17,000 in Sheli’s year. Some of it has been from exhibits, talks and other out reaches and through social media, and some of it has been more basic. “We put an ‘Open’ sign on the door. We get twenty people a week walking in saying they never knew we were here.” The Napa County Historical Society is in the Goodman Library at 1219 First Street, across the street from Archer Hotel. They are open Wednesday through Saturday in the winter, and will open back up to five days, Tuesday through Saturday, with the change to Daylight Savings Time.
