Inside the Queen’s Modern, Renovated Emergency Department
W
When you need immediate medical care, Providence Queen of the Valley Medical Center’s Gasser Emergency Center is ready – now more than ever – to address your critical health concerns in a modern, healing environment. Thanks to generous support from the community in partnership with Queen of the Valley Foundation, the Napa Valley hospital recently began a $14 million upgrade and expansion of its emergency department. Expected to be equipped with updated patient rooms, larger staff areas, a fast-track unit and a state-of-theart diagnostic center, the renovated department will aim to improve care and reduce wait times for the more than 30,000 individuals who visit the ED each year. “The culmination of these improvements will take our emergency department to a new level of functionality, allowing us to provide a high standard of emergency care right here in the Napa Valley,” said Nicholas Lopez, M.D., emergency physician and emergency department medical director. “It’s a great feeling to be proud of the place you work, and we are so grateful for the community support that helps make this all possible.”
ED Refresh From the moment patients step into the ED, they will see refurbished patient rooms, nurses’ stations and public spaces. Upgrades include new lighting, floors, countertops, paint and furniture, as well as a renovated break room, lockers and bathrooms for physicians and caregivers. “These improvements have expanded the size of our emergency department and given us better line of sight into patient rooms,” said Leah Gehri, RN, chief

nursing officer. “The changes also have created a more comfortable and ergonomic environment for our caregivers, allowing them to better attend to patients’ needs.” Additionally, the improvements helped the Level III trauma center increase accessibility and improve care targeted specifically toward an aging population. “We are already Bronze certified under the American College of Emergency Physicians for our geriatric care and the new changes to the department will help set us up for further success if and when we pursue additional accreditation,” Dr. Lopez said.
Napa Valley Vintners Fast Track Unit Along with renovated facilities, the ED now features a seven-bed fast-track unit for patients with minor and non-life-threatening emergencies. Named by the Napa Valley Vintners who supported the project, the micro unit is staffed by a dedicated team who quickly treat and release less critical patients. “The fast track will be a game changer to help patients with less acute symptoms and minor injuries like bumps and bruises and potentially broken bones,” said Queen of the Valley Foundation President/CEO Rachael Poer. “The unit will allow us to decrease overall wait times, leading to a better experience for our patients.”
Barbara Winiarski Stroke and Diagnostics Center Supported entirely by the generosity of the Winiarski Family Foundation, the Barbara Winiarski Stroke and Diagnostics Center features a cuttingedge GE HealthCare Revolution Apex CT machine – the only one of its kind in the region – to help care teams quickly identify a patient’s medical condition and determine which interventions they need. “The gift of the CT Scan and the Barbara Winiarski Diagnostic Center add an entirely new dimension to the Queen of the Valley’s health care, embodying the miracles of scientific research and how they provide the means to heal the patient,” Warren Winiarski said. “In the spirit of Barbara’s generosity and her many contributions to the Napa Valley, these gifts from the Winiarski Foundation also reflect the teamwork and community spirit that has characterized the Queen’s hospital services. Working jointly, the Winiarski Foundation and the Queen of the Valley Foundation have opened another door to deliver the best care possible to the Napa Valley community.” Instead of taking patients down an elevator for imaging – which is formerly where these services were located, the Barbara Winiarski Stroke and Diagnostics Center is located adjacent to the ED, enabling physicians to rapidly identify injured areas in stroke and trauma patients. “This has been a particularly important project because of the care it advances,” Dr. Lopez said. “Better and faster diagnostics will allow providers to make life-saving decisions more quickly and with more information.” Overall, the extensive enhancements in the ED will not only improve the department’s speed and delivery of care, but also will create a more calming, healing environment for patients and their families. Whether you are a patient seeking care or a guest visiting a friend or family member, the Queen is excited to share these enhancements, which reflect the hospital’s reputation for excellence, with the Napa community.

BE MY
Valley Valentine By Kathleen Reynolds
Be Bubbly

With its picturesque mountains and tidy vineyards, we’re lucky to live in such a romantic place for Valentine’s Day. Add to that our vibrant Downtown Napa with bustling eateries, tasting rooms and cocktail lounges, and you’ve got a winning combination for a special Valentine’s evening. The traditional Valentine’s present for your sweetheart is, of course, chocolate and Napa is fortunate to have two delectable candy purveyors.

Visit Anette’s Chocolates where you can find their special Valentine’s confections, classic boxed chocolates, salted caramels, truffles, brittles and a variety of chocolate sauces. If you have no time to stop by on the way to your dinner, Anette’s is available from GrubHub and DoorDash, too. Anette’s has two locations: 1321 1st Street and inside Oxbow Public Market, 610 1st Street, Napa. (707) 252-4228.
Vintage Sweet Shoppe pairs chocolates with wine, which you can sample at their tasting bar. You may have seen their unique chocolate-dipped wine bottles on the Food Network, the Today Show, The Travel Channel or Bay Area Backroads. They are located at 530 Main Street in the Napa Mill building and are open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. See more of their handmade chocolate gifts at vintagesweetshoppe.com. Phone (707) 224-2986. Since your sweetheart’s present is covered, we’ll begin our Valentine’s epicurean tour at one of Napa’s 55+ tasting rooms. Brut from France, Prosecco from Italy, sparkling from California—any of these bubbles can start off your evening with a pop. Be Bubbly has these and more; over 60 sparklers await you at 1407 2nd Street, Napa. They have flights and small bites, too. On Valentine’s Day, Nick Foxer Serenades Valentines while accompanying himself on the piano from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. (707) 637-4532. Housley Napa Valley is tucked into 1038 Clinton Street. SMALL WORLD
RESTAURANT By Linda Bausch
W
When Mike Ali Musa, a native of Nazareth, opened the doors to Napa’s Small World Restaurant almost three decades ago, it came as a great and pleasant surprise how quickly the casual café would become the locals’ favorite Mediterranean restaurant. Featuring an eclectic menu selection, breakfast lunch and dinner options cross continents and cultures—as described on their home page—they serve “Foods from Nazareth and Around the World.” The Ali Musa family had been in the restaurant business for generations before immigrating to America, and Napa is lucky to have the tradition continue here. The name alone denotes the obvious; everyone is welcome. Small World provides nourishing food, freshly made with
loving hands. Mike nourishes our inner-spirit with humble signage—a gentle reminder to all that the Holy Land and the entire world are in dire need of Peace.
Rich aromas of warm and savory Middle-Eastern spices beckon hungry locals-in-the-know or lucky visitors who find themselves passing by the colorful, Coombs Street storefront. Indoors, the atmosphere is set by the eye-catching murals of the Old World which were painted long ago by two, beloved local artists. Showing pride of community, and a connection with the youth of Napa Valley, on the center wall, numerous plaques show the happy faces of young sports teams sponsored by Small World throughout many years.
A bounty of vibrant vegetables are chopped first thing each morning and displayed, up-front-andcenter, to make for speedy service on the line, and more importantly, to visually delight each customer in the queue. The cucumbers, onions, peppers, tomatoes cannot help but catch our eye. Mike and the crew work quickly in the well-organized kitchen, which has been optimized to handle the heavy volume of a busy tourist town.
The front-of-the-house staff keeps things in order as everyone’s needs are met. There’s much to boast about here, as well. This past year, Small World Restaurant and the

staff were recipients of well-deserved local awards. Napa Downtown Association held its annual Best Damn Burger Contest which has a line item to select the best local restaurant server—you guessed it—Rico Gramlich, who is well into his second decade at the restaurant, was the proud winner of that title for 2023. In addition, the Napa Valley Register awarded the restaurant with Napa Valley’s Finest ’23 Winner—Best Quick Lunch Award. The space is always immaculate and kept tidy, which is appreciated in the self-service atmosphere. Guests order their meal at the counter upon arrival, and also pay there when they leave. Beverages and flatware are easily accessible. Once orders are placed, table service is quick and efficient—by numbers. Sauces and condiments are brought to the table before your meal arrives, as the experienced staff looks ahead. Dining at Small World since a year or two after it opened, it is fair to say that I have ‘eaten the menu’ pretty much from top to bottom, being pleased with my meal every
single time. The wide variety of items ensures that Small World is a great pick for a group; there is something to meet everyone’s taste and desires . . . vegan, vegetarian, and those who enjoy meat as well.
Open Monday through Saturday at nine each morning, breakfast items are available until 11:30am. Listing a few selections here, you see the descriptions are mouth-watering. The three-egg omelettes are $14.50. Pitas have a prominent place on the menu as a staple of Middle Eastern fare. Always warm and well-textured, vegan/vegetarian options listed . . . tender pita filled with crisp, sliced vegetables, including these choices: Original Falafel, Grilled Mushrooms, Hummus, Zucchini, Baba Ganouch and Grilled Eggplant—$13.99.
Snacks and desserts are listed with price points between $2.99-$11.25. Greek Fries lead the list, Chicken Strips and Fries combined—$11.25. Generous side of French Fries are lightly battered, served hot and crisp. Following on the list are, Side of Hummus, Zucchini, Baba, Corn Dog, Side of Dolmas, Fish and Chips (one of my favorites, at
Meat Pitas include Traditional Lamb Gyro, Grilled Chicken Breast, Shawarma, Grilled Polish Sausage, Beef Gyro, Chicken Schnitzel or Chicken Kebab—$14.99. If you are hungry—add extra meat—$2.00. Salads and Platters are created using more than generous portions of the same crisp vegetables we have been hearing about throughout and if desired, embellished with the items you see listed above in the Pita section. The Steak Salad is a particularly popular selection. Wellseasoned, tender, thinly sliced steak is piled high upon the salad. Pricing is quite reasonable and varies between $13.99 and $16.50. Burgers made of lamb, beef, chicken or fish are always a favorite, cooked to order and served with the usual vegetable accompaniment and a choice of cheese. A warm, toasted brioche bun puts the sandwiches at the top of my list for a quick and enjoyable lunch. MUSTARD SEASON ONCE AGAIN! By Lisa Adams Walter
Soon after the beginning of each year, bursts of yellow naturally paint the local landscape. Millions of tiny yellow blossoms bloom between rows of grapevines, scattered across hillsides, along paths and roadways, within bright green pastures and even in some neighborhood front yards. Several decades ago and for many consecutive years, a mustard festival was held in the Napa Valley. It culminated in a major weekend event featuring everything mustard, as well as wine, food, performing and visual art. Jessel Miller, a local artist and gallery owner, was a featured artist of that event for a few years. Known for her whimsical and colorful works, it comes as no surprise that Miller has been the driving force behind a new annual event in its second year, the Napa Valley Mustard Celebration. This year, the celebration began in late January and is set to continue through March of 2024. The featured artist is Michael Fitzpatrick, whose commemorative work is centered upon a female pausing to gaze upon a mustard bloom-filled vineyard, while cycling in the Napa Valley. For those of us that live in the Napa Valley, events and specials are offered at restaurants, wineries, spas and hotels throughout the valley.
In Yountville, the Yountville Art Walk is a visual feast that is available for free every day. Art shows are also set for Jessel Gallery, Art Gallery Napa Valley and Gordon Huether’s gallery all in Napa. The Atlas Peak Road Opening Celebration begins at Jessel Gallery, Silverado Resort and Gordon Huether Gallery, February 3 and 4. On the evening of February 28, the Yountville Mustard Celebration, which will feature gourmet bites and mustards from Hurley Farms of The Napa Valley, and splashes of wine from Napa wineries will fill the Yountville Community Center. From March 8 through 10, the St. Helena Mustard Celebration PopUp Artist Exhibit at the St. Helena Welcome Center, will feature bites, sips of wine, and mustard-related art. For the entire month of March, the Napa Valley Mustard Celebration Photo Finale exhibit will be showcased at Jessup Cellars in Yountville, featuring Napa Valley winter mustard landscapes and related subjects. Enjoy Napa Valley when the mustard blooms, as it always feels as if Mother Nature herself is celebrating the food, wine and art of our region. The full list of Napa Valley Mustard Celebration events and event merchandise, visit NapaValleyMustardCelebration.com.
