CHOOSING A PRIVATELY OWNED VETERINARY HOSPITAL

T

There are basically two types of veterinary hospitals ownership, privately owned and corporate owned. Privately owned hospitals may be incorporated, their board usually includes one or two owners. Corporate owned hospitals consist of large corporations, a board of directors, and multiple shareholders. Some are publicly traded and sometimes they own thousands of hospitals. Privately owned hospitals are typically locally and family owned, as are both Napa River and Napa West Pet Hospitals. Private ownership offers many advantages to your pets and to you as a consumer: • Most importantly, each veterinarian can individualize your pet’s care. Corporations dictate what their veterinarians must recommend, what diagnostic test they should run, and even what medications they can use. Private practices are not tied to a single drug or pet food company.

Registered Veterinary Tech, Julie with Bristol

• If you visit your local veterinarian every time your pet needs a vaccine, check-up or treatment, you can request to see the same veterinarian each time. Familiarity can reduce pets’ anxiety and stress and improves the quality of your visit. • Smaller practices can provide more personalized pet care. If our patients are happy and our veterinarians are practicing good medicine, we allow them to practice with what makes them feel comfortable. The staff at private clinics usually have more time to take care of your pet.

The Hutson Hydrotherapy Tub is back open for appointments.

You are not rushed in and out the door just because the veterinarian has back-to-back appointments and quotas to meet. • Your local veterinarian can usually get you in for a visit sooner. If your pet is sick or injured, time can make a difference. Often you can even get a same day appointment. • Privately owner clinics are more concerned about their own veterinarian’s performance not their productivity. Corporations give their veterinarians quotas and quarterly reviews where their financial performance dictates their production bonus. Private hospitals usually pay their veterinarians a fixed salary. • Smaller locally owned veterinary hospitals can change and pivot with the times, what new, better, or what is needed for your pet and what fits your budget.

Love to Love N a pa Va l l e y T e n n i s A s s o c i at i o n By Kathleen Reynolds

“I took to tennis like a fish to water... Up until the day I stopped playing, tennis made me full of endorphins. I never had a down day.” Sarah Gianelli, age 93 Silverado Country Club’s tennis champ for 13 years.

“I’m the ‘Old Guy’ with the Napa Valley Tennis Association (NVTA),” says Bruce Lamoreaux, vice president of the club. “We started in 1967. Now we have 245 members, plus additional lifetime members.” “When the club started, tennis was booming the U.S. but there weren’t many public courts. Back in the day, I remember playing with Robert Mondavi at the Napa High courts. Now there’s only one public court that isn’t on school grounds, at Los Flores Center. They had a second court, but it was converted into four pickleball courts.”

While the group was organized in 1967, their idea to promote the sport and create public courts wasn’t fully realized until 1976. Most of the funding for the project came from a California Recreational Bond, Napa Community Projects and the NVTA. “At first, we included the whole valley, but then we concentrated on the Vintage High School courts,” Bruce explained. “Our big fundraiser in 1975 featured Rudy Vallée (a wildly popular singer, actor and bandleader from the 1930s), who was a tennis player. We had a terrific response.

Along with money raised from that, the State grant was about $70,000, Community Projects gave us $15,000, the association put in $21,000 and individual donations brought us up to what we needed to put in 11 courts. At the time the estimated cost was $100,000.” The website states: “The NVTA’s major contribution, however, was the huge effort by the hundreds of members who volunteered time and energy to do everything from installing the fencing to bringing in the plumbing. Today the

responsibility of maintaining the facilities and scheduling activities is the sole responsibility of the NVTA. We are continuing to make improvements and we are very proud of our public tennis park.” “Our goal is to make tennis available for all. It’s good exercise, you’re around people, there’s a lot of laughter and activities,” says Bruce. “Tennis enables you to make quick decisions, be outside and there’s the social part. Older folks, especially,

TENNIS

need social interaction. There’s a Copenhagen study that says tennis is the number one sport to add nine years to your life span.” Sarah Gianelli, age 93, was another longtime member of the association. She agrees with the Copenhagen study conclusion. “I took to tennis like a fish to water,” says Sarah, who once reigned as Silverado Country Club’s tennis champ for 13 years. “I terribly miss playing. Up

until the day I stopped playing, tennis made me full of endorphins. I never had a down day. It changed my life; got me outdoors.” “Around 1965, there were a group of us who wanted to play. We had to go to Napa High School and hit against a wall for our backboard. The court surface there was too cracked and dangerous to play on. I remember when Silverado Country Club opened and built courts, there was a scramble to join. That’s when the group decided to raise funds to improve the high school courts. People were eager for lessons. Vintage added a couple of courts and the NVTA had an agreement to use them.” Volunteers are the lifeblood of the organization says both Bruce and Sarah. Costs of upkeep are high. “One of my daughters is there now, painting the bathrooms,” says Sarah. “We’re trying to increase the access and make improvements.”

What’s in the works? “We’ll have our Fourth of July tournament fundraiser, the Tennis Classic’s 43rd Anniversary. People come from all over California, Nevada and Colorado. It’s been named the ‘Tournament of the Year in Northern California.’ It’s really popular.” For more information, visit napatennis.org. What would Bruce say to anyone who used to play tennis, wants to learn or just don’t know if they should get involved in the game? “We have a great pro, Mike Fischer Jr. the owner of Fischer International Tennis Training (FITT). Come out, meet the pro and talk to him. He can set you up, show you what to do. Volunteer to help. We have all kinds of adult classes, including an aerobic one.” Fischer is a certified USPTA Elite Professional. He established a multi-level junior program, holds weekly adult clinics and helps adults better their individual and team skill levels as well as reach and work on their playing goals. For

information about adult and junior lessons, email info@trainatfit.com. NVTA promotes tennis in several ways. It offers assistance to elementary school teachers for grants, equipment and coaches, obtains grants from the USTA for new and continuing programs and offers the HITS program free to youth in the Napa communities (HITS trains youth 10 and under in team fundamentals and life enrichment). If you are interested in joining NVTA, there are several annual membership options. All plans are valid for one year, except for the limited membership available to USTA teams that want to use NVTA as their home court.

neighborhoods on foot, bicycle, roller skates... or? One year I spotted a guy in a motorized living room recliner chair cruising right by Fuller Park. No joke!

Hooray, Porchfest is BACK! I cannot wait to get out and soak up the sun and the tunes. Per tradition, Napa Porchfest is held on the final Sunday of the month; this year, Sunday, July 31. Fun fact, porchfest events originally began in the eastern United States, and Napa Porchfest was the first-ever held west of the Mississippi!

Several streets are fittingly closed off to traffic, and many homeowners generously make their picturesque porches available for local Napa musicians and bands to play full sets of diverse music styles. Past years have featured genres such as Rock, Chamber, A Cappella, Country, Folk, Jazz, Rhythm and Blues! Truly, there is something for everyone.

Presented by Napa County Landmarks, Porchfest takes bands out of the garage and onto the porch, while simultaneously providing the opportunity to experience some of the most historic downtown Napa

Again, this is a completely free oneday event. A Porchfest veteran

would recommend bringing plenty of water, sunscreen, a picnic and snacks, or cash for food trucks and merch, lightweight portable chairs, a hat, sunglasses and plenty of friends. There is something for everyone at Napa Porchfest, and for me it is one of the only times I get to slow down and really take in the beauty of the eclectic, antique neighborhoods that I normally drive through to simply get through town. money sense

The Joy of Caring for Loved Ones As They Age By Iván Rothkegel Being able to support their elders is the most important financial goal for many families — and that is especially true for Hispanics/Latinos. Bank of America offers these steps that can help you prepare. I am a U.S. citizen of Chilean descent. But there is one allegiance that, for me and many Hispanic people, supersedes nationality. That is family. It is a key value in our culture to protect and care for parents, grandparents, even aunts and uncles. It is no surprise to me that affluent Hispanic/Latino individuals are four times more likely than the general population to cite assisting aging parents as one of their most important financial goals. That is one finding of Merrill’s recent indepth study, “Diverse Viewpoints: Exploring Wealth in the Hispanic/Latino Community.” In total, 8 million — or about 17% — of family caregivers in the U.S. are Hispanic/ Latino, according to research from AARP.1 “No one tells you that you have to take care of your parents. It is just what we do,” says Kenneth Correa, a managing director and market executive at Merrill, whose mother — now 71 — emigrated from South America as a young widow to raise her son alone. “When you are taking care of your parents and your own kids, the margin of error is often small,” Correa adds. “That is why planning is critical, and the sooner you can start, the better.” Working with an advisor, anyone who anticipates caring for elders as they age can begin to put a plan in place. Here are some steps you can take to get started: Talk openly with family members Bring your family members together to discuss how your parents or other aging family members want to be taken care of. Do it before anyone needs help, so that you can make thoughtful decisions, says Ben Storey, director of retirement thought leadership for Bank of America. Strongly encourage your parents to get a will and power of attorney if they do not already have one, as well as a health care and financial proxy to spell out who will make key medical and financial decisions if they can no longer do so themselves. “And do not assume both parents have the same idea,” Storey says. “Hear everyone out

and try to find common ground.” In addition to the legal documents, he suggests setting down in writing everyone’s shared responsibilities. Include a contingency plan in case the designated caregiver is not able to assume — or has to leave — the role. Set savings goals and stick to them “When you are focused on immediate financial needs, like caring for your parents, you can end up diverting funding from your future,” Storey notes. To help avoid that risk, you may want to set up two separate portfolios — one for your own retirement, one for your parents’. Consider long-term housing needs “Many Hispanic/Latino families prefer having elderly parents move in with them rather than entering a care facility. That can require a bigger house,” Storey notes, or elder-friendly renovations to an existing home. Your advisor can help you prepare for the costs. Looking after elders can put a disproportionate burden on women, who often wind up shouldering the bulk of in-home care, notes Cynthia Hutchins, director of financial gerontology at Bank of America. “Women sometimes wind up cutting back on work in order to manage elder care, which can affect their ability to advance in their career and save for retirement,” she notes. One answer for both men and women managing caregiving needs is hiring in-home help, but that can be expensive. To make in-home care more affordable, consider pooling your resources. Having siblings or cousins contribute a set amount to a joint account every month can help. It can also save the designated bill-payer from having to go to everybody for a handout every time an invoice comes in. While some families choose to have older relatives under the same roof, others may prefer providing them with a nearby house or apartment. That gives the parents a measure of independence while making it easier for you to help when needed. Make

sure older relatives have a chance to express their preference. Treasure all the special moments Remember to treasure the special moments that happen when aging family members are an integral part of your life. When I think about Hispanic/Latino families, I think about the weekly ritual many have maintained for generations: Sunday lunch at the parents’ or grandparents’ house. It is a noisy gathering that includes siblings, everyone’s kids, aunts, uncles, cousins and so on. It is also a deeply reassuring tradition and one that generally does not end when one generation gets too old to host it. It simply shifts to someone else’s home. Taking care of elders as they age is a continuation of that tradition in our culture. As Correa puts it, “Being able to help your elders is not just an obligation, but a joy.” Iván Rothkegel is a freelance writer and translator covering Latin American and business and finance issues at many publications, including The Wall Street Journal.

Their educational video was informative, and we received a discount for watching it. We tried going through another law firm, but it was hard to get in touch with someone to set anything up. Celebrating 20 Years in Downtown Napa

Ristorante Allegria “This country has given me everything I wanted. If you can’t make it here, you probably can’t make it anywhere. This country is a land of opportunities.” ~ Baris Yildiz

By Craig Smith

R

Ristorante Allegria celebrates their 20th year in business this year, a milestone not many make. They got one of the best presents a business could get – in March, the Napa Chamber of Commerce named Allegria the Small Business of the Year for 2021, honoring them at the Chamber’s Annual Luncheon. The prepared video accompanying the honor included a half dozen downtown restaurant owners speaking not only to the quality of the restaurant, but to the character of Baris Yildiz, who owns the business with his brother Rodi. Baris called winning the award a humbling experience, one he treasures. He loves the restaurant business, and can’t imagine doing anything else.

1026 1st St, Napa | 34

July 2022

That wasn’t always the case. Shortly after coming to America from a small village near Kurdistan, a young Baris and Rodi went to work as busboys in their uncle’s restaurant. Neither of the boys spoke English, and every customer encounter was confusing and a little frightening. “Always say ‘yes’ to the customer,” his uncle told Baris, so he did. Once, when a patron asked for butter, Baris confidently said, “yes,” having no idea what he had been asked. It was only later, when Baris’s uncle asked him why he didn’t take the man his butter, did Baris understand what had happened. After a couple of weeks, he wanted to leave the restaurant and go into construction.

707-254-8006 | ristoranteallegria.com

Fortunately, Baris isn’t afraid of a challenge and decided not to change jobs. He spent a year and a half learning English, and the more he learned, the more he liked the restaurant business. After a year at his uncle’s, Baris moved on to work at a French restaurant. He took business classes at Canada and Foothill colleges, focusing on restaurant and hotel management. He joined the Kimpton Restaurant and Hotel group out of San Francisco for six years. Baris is also a very good soccer player and made his first trip to Napa for a tournament. During the game, he broke his leg, and couldn’t walk for six months. While recovering from his injury, he and Rodi talked about opening their own restaurant. Baris’s impression of Napa was positive – a small town, unlike LA or San Francisco, with lots of fields and mountains, much like his native country. The brothers decided to look for a place in Napa, and found the former bank building at 1026 First Street, next to Dwight Murray Plaza. Lease negotiations took six months, followed by a year of construction. The menu was never a question – the brothers know Northern Italian food inside and out. They opened on July 19, 2002. “It was a Chefs Market Friday, and we were packed that first night,” said Baris. “Many of the diners from that first night became regulars.”

or personal reasons. His mom taught he and Rodi what was and wasn’t important in life. “’Never let money come between you guys,’ she told us over and over. If you work here, you’re part of the Allegria (which means ‘Happiness’ in Italian) family.” Although he loves the restaurant business, he’s not sure he would advise his kids to do it. “The restaurant business is like a baby – anything can happen at any time if you don’t watch it. It’s a stressful job. But if you love it like I do, there’s nothing else like it.” Giving credit where it’s due, he added, “Having a brother like Rodi as a partner has been priceless.” For five years, Baris, which means “Peace,” joined a “Teach Peace” effort. He traveled to refuge camps and tried to help kids get out of terrorist groups. “The kids had to trust you, and we put in all that time to get them to trust us.” He felt like it was the least he could do. “This country has given me everything I wanted. If you can’t make it here, you probably can’t make it anywhere. This country is a land of opportunities.”

This is a long way from where and how Baris grew up. “People talk about growing up with nothing? We had nothing.” “Nothing” means no running water, electricity or any kind of stability. “When I was fifteen, my father said, ‘You are going to America tomorrow.’ I didn’t even know where America was.” After an eighteen-hour bus ride to the airport in Istanbul, Baris tried to hide so he would miss his flight, but his dad made sure he got on the plane. Once here, he moved to San Mateo and lived with ten people in a three-bedroom apartment. It was there that he went to work for his uncle. He didn’t see the rest of his family for five years. His experiences growing up informed how he has lived his life, both professionally and personally. He treats his staff like family, “We have guys in the kitchen who have been with us since day one. Our chefs even helped us paint the place.” If an employee or family member needs help, they get it, whether its for business

We want to introduce everyone to Napa Integrated Medicine! The first of it’s kind regenerative clinic devoted entirely toward improving the movement and functionality of patients without the need for narcotics or surgery! Our team is devoted to establishing the first of it’s kind Functional Medicine Regenerative clinic in Napa. We focus on the maximum results for injury recovery, joint rehabilitation with out surgery, and post-surgical recovery. No other clinic in Northern California offers the type and quality of care that we are pioneering! What makes us different? The corporation was founded on the golden rule... “We treat each and every patient how we would like to be treated.” We do this by providing unique care for: ✓ Hip Pain

✓ Hand Pain

✓ Knee Pain ✓ Foot Pain

✓ Shoulder Pain ✓ Ankle Pain ✓ Arm Pain

✓ Chronic Spinal Injuries

Our patients see amazing results! It starts with the highly detailed examination – allowing us to get the original cause or causes of your problem. By utilizing functional medicine, regenerative medicine, chiropractic, physio-therapy, sound nutritional guidance and state of the art therapy equipment our patients experience one of the best and quickest recovery processes available. By screening our patients and providing a thorough examination the doctors then meet to review viability and the treatment protocols to best get this patient from their current state to where they can feel and do the most! It’s unlike any practice in Northern California because the patient care is truly a “Team Effort”! Jonathan Figg MD, Karsten Garduce NP, and David Eade DC, have a combined 34 years of technical, practical and “old fashioned” serve the patient experience. It’s our attitude and commitment that are the driving forces of this new Medical Office. What makes it different is that from the moment the patient enters care they are supervised at every step along the way. From Pre-Therapy, to Procedure to PostTherapy you are a person that is inspired. Not just given an insurance number and told to wait indefinitely! You are delivered a new protocol in health care. One that seeks to challenge the standards of care and lift them to a new level! Napa Valley Integrative Medicine is truly unique. And we look forward to working with our community to establish an ongoing level of trust and outcomes that will help to change the field. We seek to educate the patient on the possibility of cartilage preservation. Returning to a level of living that wasn’t possible before is what we are working to achieve. We do this without long term use of narcotics, opiates and costly replacement surgeries. When we get down to the basics of why we live it’s truly about enjoying each and every day wth all of our faculties working at their best! Not everyone is a candidate. Sometimes the need for surgery is present and when it is, we make sure we refer you to some of the best to perform the procedures but most importantly we work with you to get and maintain the best outcomes. That’s why we have our initial consultation and examination to see if this process is right for you.

“We’re excited to get back to our original version of the Walk for Animals,” says Wendi Piscia, executive director of Napa Humane. “For the past two years, the walk has been virtual and now we’re returning to a short, in-person stroll from the Oxbow Commons (on McKinstry Street) through downtown and back.”

Registration fees are $65 with a t-shirt, $46 without the shirt; youth 10 and younger receive a t-shirt for $20 when registered by a parent or guardian. Youth are free without receiving a t-shirt when the parent or guardian registers and they walk together. There will be registration the day of the event for $50 without a t-shirt. T-shirt sales on the day of the walk will be based on availability.

“We’ll have fun pet contests such as tricks and costume competitions. There’s a great silent auction (for registered walkers) with a wide variety of items and vendor booths.” All registered walkers receive a goodie bag and there’s an option of whether you want to get a t-shirt. Walkers can also enjoy music, pet-centric activities and photo opportunities. Organizers expect 450 to 500 walkers the day of the event. “This is our main fundraiser of the year for Napa Humane,” says Wendi. “Our goal is to raise at least $75,000. JULY 28 RICHARD MARX For Richard Marx, his 12th studio album, Limitless, came as a surprise for several reasons. The chart-topping, Grammywinning artist, whose last solo album Beautiful Goodbye was released in 2014, didn’t sit down to create new music with a specific set of goals. Instead, Marx found himself reconnecting with that innate love for songwriting that set him on his successful career over 30 years ago. Richard spent nearly four years writing and recording over various sessions in between tour dates. The process started with Let Go. This mid-tempo pop number arrived during a pivotal time in Richard’s life, coming to fruition just as everything around him was shifting. uptowntheatrenapa.com JULY 29 & 31 TULOCAY CEMETERY WALKING TOUR This 90-minute walking tour starts at 11 am at the historic
