E & M PRESENTS
Three for Three “A hipster Mr. Rogers,” a stage bursting with bubbles, and a Canadian trio of siblings that fiddle, step dance and sing their way into your hearts.”
Over the next three months, E & M Presents will bring three extraordinary shows for kids and families to the Napa Valley College Performing Arts Center. Here’s a sneak preview.
THE JOSHUA SHOW
Sunday, January 30 | 1pm & 3pm Napa Premier Hailed as “The Ambassador of Joy” and “A Hipster Mr. Rogers,” New York-based puppeteer Joshua 16

Holden – with his puppet soulmate Mr. Nicholas and musician Jeb Colwell – brings warmth, wisdom and whimsy to the stage with a show recommended for ages five and above. Using live music, physical comedy, tap dance, storytelling and acting, Holden aspires to make the world a better, happier place with his message of celebrating our differences, finding joy in everyday life and respecting the feelings of others.
Under The Rainbow Bubble Man
“Joshua finds a way to allow every audience member to find a way in – to see themselves in the theater that’s unfolding,” said Aretta Baumgartner, education director at the Center for Puppetry Arts.
and managing my own award-winning one-man show” (joshuashow.com).
THE AMAZING BUBBLE MAN
Sunday, February 13 | 1pm & 3pm Holden reminisces about his entry into the world of puppets: “My mother took me to see ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at the North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Mass. when I was seven years old,” he remembers, “and by intermission I was begging to join the cast onstage. I began studying acting soon thereafter, but it wasn’t until after college that I was serendipitously hired to work with a master puppeteer on his newest puppet show.” “At first I took the job because it was a good paycheck but I’ve gone from a reluctant apprentice to creating
with Jet Black Pearl on accordion See it to believe it! If you missed the bubble art, tricks, science and fun in Louis Pearl’s first appearance with E & M Presents in 2016, you won’t want to miss experiencing his latest creations floating into Napa – the “Honeymoon Bubble” and “The Floating Caterpillar Bubble”! Pearl is one of the world’s leading bubble-ologists.

The Joshua Show
“Louis doesn’t try to hype up the kids or milk gags, or applause. Instead this fascinating and passionate bubblelover chooses to let the bubbles speak for themselves. He could also be described as an accessible scientist who creates performance art or an unusual visual artist who creates science” (amazingbubbleman.com)
THE FITZGERALDS Sunday, March 6 | 1pm and 3pm Napa Premier Gorgeous fiddle music and top rate, absolutely exhilarating step dance routines – that just about sums up this unique sibling trio from just outside Canada’s renowned Ottawa Valley, a town with a heavy influence of Scottish and Irish culture. Tom, Kerry and Julie Fitzgerald have come a long way from their small town Bancroft roots winning titles like Canadian Grandmaster Fiddle Champions (three times) and Ontario Open Step Dance Champions.
The Paving Specialists in Wine Country... He began in 1980 by making, demonstrating and selling a toy called the Bubble Trumpet on a street corner in Berkeley, CA. Eventually his toy company had 147 products with international manufacturing and distribution, but Pearl found that he preferred playing with the toys over selling them. He sold Tangent Toys in 2002 and has been touring the world performing hundreds of shows every year. “Oh my lord” wrote a reviewer from the New Zealand Performing Arts Review, “science has never been such fun, so entertaining, artistic and cool. Louis Pearl is extraordinary, Geek-ish in a good way, lowkey and almost shy; he is not your usual energized, overly-happy children’s theater performer. Quite the opposite.”

Their unique act features high-energy fiddling and mind-blowing dance – a rare combination that includes audience interaction, an obvious love of performing, and a genuine sibling connection that resonates with audiences.
Please visit the EandMPresents.org website for up-to-date information on COVID-19 protocols as required by Napa Valley College. Masking will be mandatory with seating in pods on a first-come, first-served basis. No eating or drinking is allowed once inside the venue.
“Music was never something that was forced,” Julie Fitzgerald said. “We all loved it. We’re fortunate that this is something we knew from an early age that we were really passionate about.” “There was a community of musicians, kids we grew up with, who all fiddled, step danced, played piano and took part in a lot of fiddle and step dance competitions in Ontario. Every weekend in the summer, we would go to these competitions, but after they were over, it was just jamming and then we played soccer. It was just a really good environment.” (thefitzgeraldsmusic.com)

Y E L L A V A P A N , ALOHA Napa’s Connection to Wilfred’s Lounge Runs Deep
By Linda Bausch
A trip downtown Napa to Wilfred’s Lounge is all you need to transport yourself to a place where the day quickly evaporates into island time. With offerings of tropical cocktails, a solid Napa Valley wine list, and an enticing, island inspired menu—Napa’s new Tiki bar draws you in. The Aloha Spirit, evident at the edge of the First Street Bridge, is another chapter in a sweet story, which began in the islands in 1929. As a young lady named Flora left her Honolulu, Hawaii home, her brother Wilfred stood with their family members and bid her farewell. She traversed the wide Pacific Ocean, bound for the mainland. Flora boarded a ship on her way to San Francisco. In due time she completed an education at St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing, where she met and later married Jerry Komes. After many other accomplishments for both, before long they made their way to Napa Valley and embarked on a family, venture—making wine with their son John, their daughter Julie, and Julie’s husband Pat Garvey. Established in 1977, Flora Springs Winery continues to thrive in 2021, under the family’s watchful eye. I never thought writing about a newly opened establishment is fair game, especially in the first week or two. You have to give ‘em a fair chance to work out the kinks. Wilfred’s Lounge changed my mind about that; they raised the bar for excellence in hospitality, delicious food and beverage, right out of the gate.
An unexpected, quick visit home limited my window of opportunity to enjoy Wilfred’s Lounge, which had a surprisingly quick start. “From zero to open in about four weeks,” was how opening consultant Sean Meyers said it. It took the coordination of an experienced team: Doc Parks in the General Manager role, Chef Max Ackerman, and of course John and Nat Komes (President and CEO of Flora Springs Winery, General Manager of Flora Springs Winery, respectively.) With a bit of lucky timing, we were seated at a dinner table early Saturday evening. In the long run, it didn’t matter one little bit that it was opening week; this was a staff on fire. I mean that in the very best way possible. The only description that fits the service and food was—impeccable. That’s saying a lot, I know.

A Tiki bar is just what Napa needed. But, it was true. This brings us back to Wilfred. His spirit migrated west, across the Pacific, as Flora’s son John and grandson Nat have lovingly brought Tiki bar life to Napa. Honoring Uncle Wilfred‘s playful spirit, blending it with Flora’s deep flowing Napa Valley heritage, the result must bring a sense of great accomplishment and pride to everyone who has who has had a hand in the project.
One of the first things our server Shanie did, was assure us that her time was ours and that we should feel free to relax and enjoy ourselves. No rush. Now, we were on island time. The ultra-comfortable, tropical-print chairs at our table made relaxing all the easier.
From the massive orchid displays on each end of the bar, framing the welcoming hosts, to the band playing Hawaiian tunes on the downstairs patio, the evening was without a doubt, one of my favorites.
Shanie was well-versed in every aspect of the food and beverages listed in the leather-bound menus. The impressive cocktail list was more than tempting with its fruitful options and rum galore. But when we saw the wine list was composed solely of Napa Valley wines, we chose to honor Flora Springs and selected the Merlot. It was a fine complement to our entrées which came to the table visually impressive.
Your eyes can not help but roam the brightly colored décor. Proudly overseeing the space, portraits of Wilfred and Flora remind us of the family history which was rooted from afar. Wilfred’s bamboo framed picture graces the main dining room, and Flora’s image is featured upstairs.
There were quite a few items we wanted to try, but knew our eyes could be way bigger than—well; you know where I’m going with that . . . I promise there will be a return visit for all the things we didn’t try this time around, like the Salmon Candy Rangoon, Portuguese Bean Soup or Akaushi Flat Iron Steak.

December 2021
We started our meal by sharing the Coco Me Loco Coconut Shrimp appetizer, accompanied with lemon slices and a Ginger-Mango Sauce, which was flavorful without being too spicy. The coconut was crisp fried to a golden brown, while the shrimp remained perfectly tender inside. In addition, we had the Papa’i Crab & Avocado Salad served on a bed of greens with tropical vinaigrette; the flavors are well-balanced and complimentary. For entrées, we selected two—the Five-Spice Sticky Ribs (a half rack of baby back ribs with five-spice and hoisin barbeque sauce) and the Honolulu Burger. The ribs were meaty, oh-so-tender and delicious. The sides were fluffy, steamed rice and a macaroni salad with bright flavor in each bite—with the addition of finely diced red pepper, onion and carrot, and just the right amount of sweet and tangy dressing. The servings were generous and no one was disappointed to have leftovers the next day. The Honolulu Burger is described on the menu as: half-pound burger, smothered in island teriyaki on a
Paulie’s Hawaiian bun, topped with Swiss cheese, grilled pineapple, red onion, lettuce and tomato. The beef was juicy and the burger was stacked pretty high with a good bun to burger ratio. The bun held up well all the way to the end; that’s a bonus right there. Although it isn’t noted on the menu, sweet potato fries were a welcome addition to the plate. As I said in the beginning, a trip to Wilfred’s Lounge will transport you to a place and time where slowing down a bit and enjoying life on island time is the point. The atmosphere was upbeat and exciting. Every single detail has been thought through to create an authentic island vibe. (Be sure to make your way to the bar and patio upstairs!) The food and service couldn’t have been better. Wilfred’s Lounge was run like a well-oiled machine where everyone involved was happy to be there, it was evident by the comfort and care shown to each guest. A Tiki bar is just what Napa needed. Getting a Tiki bar that has such a long and valued connection to another Napa Valley treasure, Flora Springs Winery, is a blend we can all enjoy until the next ship sails.

No One Should be Hungry in Napa! By Kathleen Reynolds
“There’s no reason for anyone to be hungry in Napa County,” says Drene Johnson, executive director of Community Action Napa Valley (CANV). CANV runs an impressive array of feeding programs so that everyone in Napa County has enough food for themselves and their families. They also run two locations for CANV Kids, a California State licensed Department of Education program to prepare children for kindergarten. “COVID necessitated a few changes to our programs, but we were able to adapt to continue to serve Napa County,” says Drene, who has been CANV executive director for 14½ years. “The biggest change is that our senior congregate meals program is on hold until the State of California gives us the approval to resume. These were the hot meals

served at The Rianda House in St. Helena, the Community Center in American Canyon and the Napa Senior Center in Napa. Now the people who used to attend the congregate meals receive two flash frozen meals each day, three days a week at a drive-thru.” Meals on Wheels and Wellness on Wheels, two other CANV options for seniors who are homebound, have altered their delivery methods. There are approximately 65 volunteer drivers on a rotating basis. Originally, a volunteer driver would take the Meals on Wheels directly to the recipient’s home, wait until the person answered the door and stay to chat and visit with them. CANV’s wellness nurses would do similar in-person visit. Now, the volunteer drops the meals at the doorstep and waits in their vehicle until the person retrieves it. If no one comes to the door, the volunteer
notifies the office, and someone will telephone the person to make sure they are fine. The Wellness Team also currently does their checks by phone. “The biggest challenge with the new procedure is they’re missing human contact,” says Drene. “The seniors are facing isolation, loneliness and depression. For our volunteers, it’s hard to see someone they’ve gotten to know in distress. It’s difficult.” Five services run under the CANV Food Bank: Senior Brown Bag/Box, the Emergency Food Pantry, Free Food Markets, Non-profit Agency Access and USDA. It has seen an uptick in the number of people needing food and the corresponding food products needed. “Pre-COVID, we did two million pounds of food a year. Since COVID, we’ve done four
million pounds a year. This past year, we’ve served 1700 households per week or the equivalent 81,600 households a year, which includes the drivethru meals distributed during the pandemic.” The Senior Brown Box (formerly Senior Brown Bag) helps seniors aged 60 or older to remain independent as long as possible. “Seniors are able to pick up at several spots around the county. Volunteers deliver boxes to seniors with mental or physical disabilities. They receive approximately 10 to 14 food items twice a month,” states Drene. “Items may include fresh fruit, canned vegetables, oatmeal, beverages, pasta and staple items. Currently 335 Brown Bag meals are distributed per month.”

The Free Food Markets provide fresh fruits and vegetables along with other non-perishable food items to the Napa community on a regular basis. There is no income eligibility, and it occurs every Friday at various locations. The Emergency Food Pantries are offered at seven pantry sites to low-income resident of Napa County every 30 days. Food amounts vary according to the household size. Locations of the Free Food Markets are listed on the website: canv.org. The markets serve more than 1,000 households a month. The Food Bank also works with 35 local nonprofit organizations who serve low-income people, allowing them access to a low-cost source of nutritious food. There are also nonperishable items, such as diapers. Once a week these agencies can shop for USDA Commodities

and/or bulk food for only 19 cents per pound or at wholesale cost. “We only charge non-profits our cost when we have to purchase the food,” Drene explains. “Like everything else, the cost of food has gone up. Whatever we get for free, we give away. All the bakery items are free. We do not touch the food, everything is wrapped or packaged.” Volunteers were in shorter supply during the worst of the pandemic. At the start, all food received by the Food Bank had to be separated for 72 hours, then wiped down. “The National Guard has been invaluable to us in this pressing time of need,” says Drene. “They helped with the drive-thru pantries and delivered meals all over Napa County, including American Canyon, Pope Valley, Angwin and

Lake Berryessa. The National Guard also did traffic control. We would never have gotten all the food out without their help. We originally had 12 Guard members, now we have five. We’re hoping they stay with us a while longer. ”CANV is eco-conscious. “We recycle everything we can’t use,” Drene says. “Any food that we can’t distribute is given to pig farmers. We make sure there is no waste at all. There’s hardly any garbage.”
The number of CANV paid staff is tiny; the food programs work because of volunteers and donations. “People are generous and assist us a lot. Local grocers help with food donations. Service clubs like the Boy Scouts, the Postal Workers, the CanDo Green Bag Programs, community food drives and supermarkets help, too. After the Fair, the pig farmers donate a pig to us, and others donate
Anyone familiar with the USDA programs of old may be surprised by recent changes. “USDA items are much more palatable now. No longer are there big blocks of tasteless cheese. Once a month, we give out the USDA produce boxes at eight locations. Lowincome Napa County people are eligible and sign up for them. Residents may choose only one location.”

meat as well. Brown’s Valley Market processes and holds it for us.” While various grants help with food purchases, no grants help with CANV’s operational expenses. “Gas prices have risen as we all know. Our drivers are all over the county delivering food. There’s vehicle maintenance, electricity and rent to pay. Financial donations are needed, and even gift cards are useful. Because of the pandemic, we’ve had no fundraisers. The CanDo Give!Guide helped.”
What are common misconceptions? “That the people who access the food don’t need it. While there were some during the drive-thru phase who took advantage of it, we know the people who need it, really need it. We are Napa’s only Food Bank and Meals on Wheels, and we do a good job with what we have and a small staff.” Food Bank Program Coordinator, Taima Broadhead, says that the biggest surprise to her in the four years she’s worked at the Food Bank is that most people receiving food are employed.

TASKS IN THE
Winter
Plan for pollinators! Flowers with visible yellow stamens like this cosmos are a real treat for all sort of pollinators.
Working outside in the winter garden reflects the season - it’s a slow time, perfect for those projects that get put off during the busy spring and summer. Plants are growing slowly right now, or they’re completely dormant so there is (hopefully) no urgent need to water, fertilize, or deadhead. Winter is also when you should take advantage of the short bare root season for roses, fruit trees, strawberries and more.
Planting
“
Winter is the only time of year when bare root plants are available. Sold leafless and when their roots are exposed, (hence the name) bare root roses, fruit trees, strawberries, asparagus, and horseradish are available for short windows of time in January and February. Experienced gardeners know to take advantage of this hyper seasonal offering because long term plant health and vigor is strongly correlated with the root health at the time of planting. This is when reputable garden centers have their largest selection and lowest prices of the year for roses and deciduous fruit trees.
”
Winter blooming flowers like afternoon-shade-loving and drought-tolerant camellias are ideally sourced now, when their flowers are visible. Winter annuals like cyclamen, pansies, violas and primroses will keep putting out new flowers until the weather warms up around May. Tuck them into pots or in the front of your garden beds for a pretty pop of color.
Pruning
The dormant season is ideal for structural pruning of woody plants, both to maintain aesthetics and to

improve health. Dead or dying limbs should be cleanly removed with a sharp pair of pruners or a saw. Branches with poor attachments to the trunk, or those that have grown to cross each other, should be reduced or removed. Prune roses back to knee height by removing small branchlets less than a pencil’s thickness, taking care to leave at least two thirds of the plant and a foundation of strong canes for next year’s growth. Here in the Napa Valley it is also usually necessary to manually remove all the leaves from your rose so you can have a fresh start with disease threats in the spring. Assess deciduous fruit trees and berry plants for pruning needs as well. Reduce branches to keep fruit trees smaller and stronger. Small trees are easier to harvest from, and
Camellias are stunning winter bloomers that are also drought tolerant once established.
it’s best to establish a small framework in the first few years that the tree is in the ground.
Maintenance
Apply fungicides, such as copper, to plants that are susceptible to fungal diseases in order to reduce the number of overwintering spores. For example, treatment of peach leaf curl for peach and nectarine trees involves multiple applications of copper spray in December, January and February. Apply a horticultural oil spray to help eliminate overwintering aphids and mite pests that shelter themselves in the crevices of plants. If your plum had curly leaves last summer an application of oil now is important! Good fruit tree hygiene includes removing any rotten or mummified fruits and keeping the area underneath your fruit tree free of debris.
Voilas. Tuck them into pots or in the front of your garden beds for a pretty pop of color.
Weeding is also very important in these early months. Catching weeds when they are very small in January will save you a headache in May! On hard packed surfaces, a tool such as a hula hoe is ideal. Areas with loose soil or mulch should be hand weeded or potentially sprayed with a capric acid-based herbicide.
Transplanting
Winter is also an excellent time to assess your planting layout. Relocating plants is best done in the dormant season as the physical trauma to the roots will not be compounded by the higher water demand of spring or summer. When digging up woody plants, excavate as much of the root ball as possible. Use the drip line of the plant, which is the extent of the canopy, as a guide for how wide your root ball should ideally be. Perennials or bulbs, in contrast, do not require as extensive root systems for replanting. Transplanting is best done when the ground is moist but not soggy, and it is important to keep transplants well-watered as they get reestablished.
Water
Dormant and well-established plants in the ground need very little supplemental water in the winter. Turn off or reduce any automatic water systems. Potted plants will need a little more attention. If your potted plants receive rain, check to make sure that the soil is draining properly with no standing water in the pot. For plants that are tucked under the eaves of buildings, water as needed. Perhaps the gentlest of winter tasks for the home gardener is planning for the coming year. Our cold and rainy days are perfect for sitting down with garden sketches and inspirational photos from Pinterest. As the days get longer be sure to notice where and when sunlight touches specific parts of your garden. This information is incredibly valuable when you shop for plants. Making planting plans for spring flowers and summer vegetables will help speed the dark days of winter along!

Napa Squirrels Go Nuts There have been some very entertaining posts on the Napa edition of Nextdoor recently. In addition to all the new sightings of wild life in our little ‘burbs – not just coyotes, bobcats, raccoon, and deer; but mountain lions and bears (oh my!!) – a number of what we would consider regular urban beasts are going all “Animal House” on us. A recent post asked Napa neighbors how to handle aggressive squirrels. Squirrels? Aggressive? Apparently, there’s a growing group of fuzzy little cuties who are just a little pissed off and not afraid to throw down some animal smack on their human neighbors. As most threads start, this one was a seemingly innocent question: what do you do with squirrels that are acting aggressively? In this case, trying to break into the kitchen with the goal of running off the human inhabitants. The squirrel family had moved into the attic and now was not happy with their downstairs
neighbors. Just like on Court TV, this neighborhood conflict was getting a touch out of hand. Comments ranged from opining that some squirrely domain protection was going on, to poo-pooing the possibility of a real threat. Of course, there were those who suggested violent, and not so violent, removal of the miscreants, and others who just wanted the pros called in. Amidst all this there were however, several, who had tales (tails?) of run-ins with squirrels gone nuts. Over by Vintage High School, one woman was assaulted by a local squirrel that launched itself onto her head when she stopped to admire its furry cuteness. “I got attacked this summer by a squirrel. He was up in our tree. I walked by, looked at him, and thought how sweet he was. I said, “hello my squirrel” to him and he jumped from the tree onto my head. I pushed him off my head, only to have him claw my arm on the way down. He then proceeded to chase me into the house. So glad I had a bag in my hand to defend myself. This guy was mean. I ended up at the emergency clinic to get a tetanus shot and be treated for the deep scratches on my arm.” After reading this account, I almost couldn’t stop myself looking up into trees and wondering if I compliment a squirrel will he/she go all critter crazy on me?
Roosters Not Behaving Either By ML Hilton
Less of a stretch, but no less entertaining was the story of the woman ISO of a rooster whisperer. “I am in desperate need of a rooster whisperer, cock wrangler, chicken trainer, someone to tame a wild rogue rooster who has decided my house is home. One of our neighbors dispersed their chickens, leaving them wandering, rogue and wild. I felt bad for them so I started feeding the trespassing colonists,” she said. Gaining courage from all the good free food, “the big rooster attacked my boyfriend, ripping up his leg when he walked out of the front door, because apparently the human was trespassing in their chicken camp territory. I, of course, thought it was hilarious that he was attacked by the big cock on the porch – this big hunting man and this little fluffy non-flying, harmless, egg-making bird – leaving the fierce hunter coming away with the bruises. Little did I know I would soon come to regret my laughter.” Dubbed Sir Cock Squat the feathered devil then committed itself to stalking the human inhabitants of the ranch at every turn. Forcing the adults to leave rakes, oars, bats, and sticks at every available nook. Defending themselves became part of the daily chores. More 200 comments followed this thread, mostly to applaud the hysterical writing and some to commiserate over the bellicose nature of roosters. Ultimately, at the end of the threads, we are left unsure what happened with the squirrels and chicken. One must assume they have been relocated to habitats that aren’t as stressful – on human and pest.
“I am in desperate need of a rooster whisperer, cock wrangler, chicken trainer, someone to tame a wild rogue rooster who has decided my house is home.”

Have you saved enough for future health care costs? Over their longer lives, women spend far more on health care than men.1 These tips from Bank of America can help you cover the costs at every age. When it comes to health and financial wellness, there is one thing women could plan to do: “Save more for future medical costs,” says Nevenka Vrdoljak, a director for the Chief Investment Office, Merrill and Bank of America Private Bank. Consider this number: $194,000. 2 “That is how much more, on average, women end up spending on health care in retirement, largely because they tend to live longer than men and are more likely to have multiple chronic conditions and require long-term care,” Vrdoljak points out. In fact, women are faced with significantly higher annual health care costs throughout their lives,3 she adds. “That is why it is so important for women to carefully plan to cover their present and future medical expenses.” Working together with your financial advisor, you can estimate your future health care costs and develop a strategy for covering them as you grow older. Below are some tips and strategies to consider at various stages of your life. When you are a young adult • Make wellness a habit. “Be sure to take advantage of the health and wellness programs your employer offers. When you are considering job offers, pay special attention to the benefits like maternity and paid family leave,” says Vrdoljak. Being proactive about your health early on can help avoid complicated, costly medical issues later on. Thankfully, the rise of telemedicine means that seeking preventive care, both mental and physical, takes less time out of your busy schedule. At the same time, apps, mobile devices and smart watches can help prompt you to stay fit. • Consider funding a health savings account (HSA). If you sign-up for a high-deductible insurance plan, you are eligible to save a certain amount each year for your health care costs in a tax-free HSA. Funds that are not used right away grow tax-free and can be used for medical expenses anytime in the future.
• Keep saving — even during years away from work. Many women take time off to take care of children, which can have an impact on their retirement savings and Social Security payments down the line. “If your spouse is working, having them contribute to a spousal IRA could help you continue to build up retirement savings during periods spent at home,” says Vrdoljak. “It is also important to consider whether you have sufficient life and disability income insurance,” she adds. As you move into midlife • Explore caregiving resources. If you are taking primary responsibility or helping care for an elderly loved one, be aware of the impact that could have on your own well-being. Half of caregivers surveyed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a decline in both physical and mental health.5 Familiarize yourself with any counseling and stress reduction benefits your employer or insurance coverage offers. • Consider your long-term care needs. Long-term care insurance premiums generally begin to rise as you grow older, but there are other options to consider as well. Talk with your advisor about a range of ways you might prepare for long-term care costs. • Take advantage of catch-up savings. The more you have saved for retirement, the better prepared you will be for future health care costs. So now is a good time to get serious about maxing out your contributions. Starting at age 50, you can contribute an additional catch-up amount to many accounts. When you’re close to — and in — retirement • Keep your fitness routine going. Research has shown that engaging in physical exercise as you age can help keep your body and your mind in optimal shape, reducing health problems — and expenses — both in the present and down the road.6 • Review your asset allocations. Set up time to talk with your advisor about your retirement readiness, including your ability
to manage future health care costs. Will you have enough cash on hand for medical emergencies? Do you have incomeproducing investments earmarked for health care costs? • Think beyond Medicare. Although Medicare helps handle many costs, it does not cover everything. You are still responsible for premiums and copays, and long-term care, vision and dental care generally are not included under traditional Medicare. Beyond answering your questions about Medicare, your advisor can help you compare available Medigap and Medicare Advantage health insurance plans.

Sen. Bill Dodd’s annual holiday charity fundraiser, which for 22 years has been a leading event for Napa County nonprofit groups, set a fundraising record, taking in $1.4 million to support wildfire prevention and safety projects of the Napa Communities Firewise Foundation. This year’s festivities took place on December 3 under enhanced Covid-19 safety protocols at The Meritage Resort and Spa. “Wildfire safety and prevention is critical in Napa County, and I am pleased to be able to support the
work of this essential nonprofit group,” Sen. Dodd said. “I thank all of the donors for their generosity and for recognizing the importance of this work.” “We are grateful for the generosity of donors and appreciate Sen. Dodd for selecting us to receive this support,” said Christopher Thompson, Board President, Napa Communities Firewise Foundation. “These funds will go a long way to protecting our community from the continuing threat of wildfire.”
Napa Firewise is a countywide nonprofit organization that has been operating for 16 years. Its mission is to reduce the risk and impacts of wildfires through fire fuel reduction and community education in Napa County. It achieves this through Fire Safe Councils, through local, state and federal grants and by educating our communities on such topics as defensible space, home hardening and fire preparedness. Sen. Dodd has hosted a holiday party every year since 2000, raising a combined total of $5 million for
local nonprofit groups. Past recipients have been education advocates If Given a Chance and the Fire Relief Fund of the Salvation Army. In addition, Sen. Dodd has been a leader in passing wildfire safety legislation, authoring more than two-dozen laws on the topic including bills to create more defensible space, alert residents of approaching infernos and to set standards for utilities safety. This year, he secured about $7.6 million for Napa County to support wildfire safety, fire suppression, fuels reduction and creation of fire breaks and other vital infrastructure improvements. More than 450 people were in attendance and everyone, including staff and volunteers were Covid tested by OLE Health at the door and required to show proof of vaccination.
