money sense
Health & Aging: Is Your Family Ready to Cover the Costs? Use these four questions as a guide to help you plan ahead for future medical and caregiving needs. Most people don’t want to think about the health-related what-ifs that come with aging, let alone talk about them — especially with family. Nonetheless, that conversation is critical to have. Having a plan in place that you’ve put together as a family can free everyone up to focus on each other, instead of worrying about where the money will come from should you, or an aging parent or spouse, fall ill. “The best time to talk about these matters is before you need to,” notes Cynthia Hutchins, director of financial gerontology at Bank of America. Below are four questions to help you start having these important family talks with your spouse, your children, your parents and your siblings. Use them to share your expectations with your family. Consult your financial advisor about ways to prepare financially for the healthcare costs that may occur. And keep talking as years go by and circumstances change. While no one can know the future, being prepared for what might come next can make the road ahead easier. Here are four questions that can help you start having these important family conversations. 1. Where will the money come from? Talk about potential expenses associated with a long-term illness, such as home healthcare or modifications
to the family home to accommodate a future disability. Should your parents purchase disability or long-term care insurance, consider choices such as hybrid forms of life insurance and health savings accounts, or simply save and invest more? Review your choices with your financial advisor, who can help you ensure that your retirement and any other goals aren’t put in jeopardy. 2. Will our parents have the care they need as they grow older? Many people struggle with aging parents’ unwillingness to face their limitations. That’s why it can be wise to bring up these issues early. Ask specific questions like: At what point would it make sense for you to stop driving, or to have a caretaker come in to help with the meals? Kate Wilber, professor of gerontology at the University of Southern California — Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, says. “Often, at first, you’ll be rebuffed. This will likely take more than one conversation.” 3. Who will provide the caregiving, if it is needed? Hutchins recommends that siblings should talk among themselves about how they’ll share the caregiving role. “You want to be sure that both your parents and your own needs are considered. Sometimes it makes sense to cobble together a combination of in-
home and outside care,” she says, where siblings can at least share costs, if not the hands-on responsibilities. 4. What about end-of-life issues? Among the things to consider: Which medical treatments do you and your parents want to be used or avoided at the end of your lives? Whom do you want to be your healthcare proxy if you are unable to communicate your wishes? You can use a healthcare power of attorney and a living will to document your choices. And begin thinking about how you want to pass on your legacy — financial and otherwise.

CELEBRATING EARTH DAY NAPA’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY “We’re very excited for the belated 50th anniversary of Earth Day and hope the community will come out even more than in 2019 to help us celebrate.” ~Taylor Radek Teague

April 2022
Again! By Craig Smith
With tongues in cheek, the folks who organize the Earth Day Napa celebration invite you to join the third 50th Anniversary on Sunday, April 24 at the Oxbow Commons from 11am to 4pm. The first two, of course, were cancelled by COVID. “We had big plans for the 2020 event,” said Taylor Radek Teague, event organizer since 2016. The two unavoidable cancellations disappointed a lot of people – the event draws big crowds, with an
estimated 8,000 to 9,000 attended in 2019. The good news is that all the pent-up energy from the past two years of cancellations have the organizers psyched up. “We’re very excited for the belated 50th anniversary of Earth Day and hope the community will come out even more than in 2019 to help us celebrate. I think we all need a reason to gather,” said Radek Teague. This is by no means a dry, stuffy, preachy event. While attendees will have the chance to learn more
SUNDAY, APRIL 24 OXBOW COMMONS | 11AM-4PM about alternative energy, supporting local agriculture, watershed health, pollution prevention and more, fun is a key element of the day. Live music, arranged and provided by Latitude 38, the folks behind BottleRock Napa Valley, begins at 11:30 a.m. and continues to 4:00 p.m. Delicious local food, beer and wine will be available. Activities include karate demonstrations, interactive booths with games and crafts, aerial dancing and more – activities for all to enjoy. As always, admission is free. Originally, this was more of a ‘table-only’ affair, but after a few years, the organizers decided to add entertainment. “We didn’t want to be just preaching to the choir,” said Radek Teague. “We want people to walk away with tools they can use to support the planet, but we want them to have fun as well.”
who is planning to pursue a career in the environmental sciences. Ride your bicycle to the Oxbow Commons in Downtown Napa and take advantage of free bicycle valet parking, provided by the Napa Bicycle Coalition. To keep in the spirit of the day and to help organizers achieve their goal of being a zero-waste event, bring your water bottles and stop by the “Water Bar” filing station. And don’t miss the pre-party. Over the years, an increasingly popular aspect to the celebration is the Earth Day Napa Community Cleanup, which runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. “We had 250 participants at the 2019 Cleanup,” said Ashley Kvitek, who has organized it for the past three years. “People should bring gloves, a bucket and sturdy footwear that can get dirty.” Those wishing to help on the water can bring their canoes and kayaks, and
meet at Kennedy Park. Although some of the stuff people will pick up can be muddy, it’s mostly manageable. “We used to find washers, dryers, sofas, all kinds of junk. People are much more responsible now.” The first Earth Day in the country was held in 1970, in response to several environmental catastrophes, particularly the Santa Barbara oil spill and the Cuyahoga River fires of 1969. Many Americans felt it was time to take a more active approach in the stewardship of the planet. According to Kendra Bruno, the City of Napa’s recycling expert and another event organizer, Napa held its first Earth Day celebration in 2008. For more information on the event, . visit
earthdaynapa.com
The sales of beverages have also made this a money-making event. Beer and wine are donated by local breweries and wine is provided by Napa Green certified wineries. All of the proceeds from those sales fund the Field Trip Bus Grant program run by the Environmental Education Coalition of Napa County (EECNC), the event host. EECNC funds field trips for Napa County students to visit sites such as Skyline Park, Connolly Ranch, Carolyn Parr Nature Center and Bothe State Park, where they can gain an appreciation of the local environment. Proceeds also support the Darcy Aston Environmental Advocacy Scholarship, which is awarded to a local high school student

Iverson & Schrette Insurance
Kyle Iverson Takes the Helm at Iverson & Schrette Insurance
Most locals are familiar with Schrette Insurance Services; after all, Tom Schrette partnered with his parents in the business over forty years ago. As he would advise his clients about planning, Tom started thinking about a succession plan for the business a few years ago. That’s when Kyle Iverson came in. Kyle has taken the reins of Schrette Insurance, which has become Iverson & Schrette Insurance Services as of December 2021. “I met Tom through working within the community and helping people,” says Kyle. “We both have similar philosophies of service above self. It took two years to decide it was the right fit for both of us. It is a big step for us both as well. One of us is winding up and the other winding down.” Tom explains why Kyle is the right person to step into his role. “Kyle has worked tirelessly for the past two and a
half years to fully integrate himself into this practice in every way,” says Tom. “Our ability to work together bringing his younger perspective and my 41 years of experience. Kyle is from Napa and knows many of our clients already. I see him taking the initiative to meet and introduce himself to existing clients he does not yet know and understand each client’s needs. He is a good listener, an ability that helps him match clients with their best possible insurance needs. He is eager to help people resolve issues a client may have with an insurance carrier or coverage questions, as these are common.” “This is his baby,” says Kyle. “It’s not easy to walk away from a business you have built from the ground up, and I welcome the mentorship. He, of course, still has a lot of connections and I’m still meeting many of our clients. We don’t sell; we listen for what’s best for the people.” The insurance products offered by the company won’t change.
“We’ll still have plans for individuals, families and small businesses. We offer health, dental, vision, disability and long-term care. For health options, we have PPO, HMO, high-deductible, selffunded and federal premium tax credits. I have a particular interest in specialty Medicare supplement and advantage plans. One area that can be confusing to clients is the Affordable Care Act versus COBRA, but we are experts. Along with traditional plans, we want to analyze and create what’s best for your needs.” “For small business, we have a Human Resources component that can be invaluable. Terminations and hiring can be challenging, but we’ll guide you along the way.” They will be modernizing some of the elements that go into the business. “Clients will be able to log themselves in to their plan, keep track of policy and claims information, compare options and more. Of course, we’re always just a phone call away.”

“The nice part about this business is you become family with the clients. You see them grow their business and family and then retire. It’s all the way through; kids go from kindergarten to college. You’re able to help families for generations.” Kyle’s family is his wife Tiffany, who is a licensed marriage and family therapist, their four-year-old son and two-year-old daughter. Kyle attended Mt. George Elementary, Silverado Middle and Napa High School. His Bachelor of Arts is in Government from California State University, Sacramento. An active member of Napa Valley College’s Board of Trustees since 2016, Kyle is past Chair and current vice chair of the organization with Jeff Dodd. He is the first Trustee to serve on the NVC Foundation, the philanthropical non-profit that raises funds to help with NVC student education and success. He is a former board member of Mentis. “Something that was instrumental to my life and love of service to the community happened when I was 16 years old and a junior in high school. My dad, Bill Iverson, was in a car accident that broke his neck. From that experience, he started the Napa Spinal Cord Injury Network in 2002.
I got involved in fundraising for the Network, including the car raffle downtown.” “From that accident, my dad also became an advocate to have cannabis sales legalized. He additionally worked many years in the car business as a reinsurance sales rep, supporting car dealerships in northern California with their aftermarket sales needs and goals. One small change he has made to Schrette Insurance Services was refurbishing the office décor. Agent Alan Cash works alongside Tom and Kyle and they write a

He’s helped individuals, families, small groups and seniors with the routine and the complicated. Each one takes a different skill set and he’s mastering it.” Pictured below L to R: Tom Schrette, Kyle Iverson and Alan Cash

Lucky Penny Productions Announces Their 2022-2023 Season! With confidence that pandemic disruptions will soon be behind us, Lucky Penny Productions is excited to announce their 2022-2023 season of plays and musicals. The company’s 14th season is expected to be (fingers crossed!) their first full season since 2018-19, launching in September 2022 at the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center in Napa.
VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE
A NAPA VALLEY CHRISTMAS CAROL December 2-18, 2022
Sept. 9-25, 2022
Siblings Vanya and Sonia have spent their adult years trapped in mundane lives at their family’s cottage, caring for their ailing parents. Meanwhile, their self-involved sister Masha has become a glamorous movie star. After their cleaning woman Cassandra warns Vanya and Sonia of impending doom, Masha arrives unannounced, accompanied by her hunky young lover Spike, who sparks a friendship with the beautiful girl next door much to Masha’s dismay. When Masha reveals plans that will upend the family, long-repressed resentments bubble over in a weekend full of wild costume parties, voodoo dolls and surprise romance. The Tony Award for Best Play and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play went to this brilliant black comedy by Christopher Durang in 2013.
SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET Oct. 21-Nov. 6, 2022

It’s back for more Christmas joy! In Napa’s high stakes wine business Alexander Yuge is a financial success but his heartless attitude earns him few friends. Even his loyal nephew Joe Patchett wonders what’s gone wrong. But a familiar yet mysterious group of Christmas Eve visitors help Yuge remember what really matters. This new holiday show for the whole family was a smash hit for Christmas 2021 and returns for another holiday season. Written by Lucky Penny co-founder Barry Martin, with original music and lyrics by Rob Broadhurst.

DISNEY’S DESCENDANTS: THE MUSICAL A Young Actors Production
Jan. 27-Feb. 12, 2023
It is present-day, and in the kingdom of Auradon, all of Disney’s beloved heroes and royalty are living happily ever after, safe from the terrifying villains and troublesome sidekicks they have banished to the magic-free Isle of the Lost. That is until Ben, the benevolent teenage son of Belle and King Adam (The Beast), offers a chance of redemption for the troublemaking offspring of the evilest villains. Mal, Evie, Jay and Carlos – the children of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Cruella De Vil, and Jafar – are welcomed to Auradon Prep to attend school with the children of their parents’ sworn enemies. The four Villain Kids have a difficult choice: should they follow in their parents’ wicked footsteps or learn to be good? Based on the popular Disney Channel Original Movies, Disney’s Descendants: The Musical is a brand-new musical comedy featuring the beloved characters and hit songs from the films!
AND THE WORLD GOES ‘ROUND Co-Produced with Napa Valley College Theatre Arts
March 10-26, 2023
This musical showcases the songs of John Kander and Fred Ebb, Broadway legends who brought the world the music of “Cabaret,” “Chicago,” and “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” and collaborated on classics including “New York, New York” and “My Coloring Book.” Love songs, torch songs, and acerbically witty comic numbers have made this a favorite with music lovers around the world for decades.
SILENT SKY
April 21-May 7, 2023 When Henrietta Leavitt began work at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s, she wasn’t allowed to touch a telescope or express an original idea. Instead, she joined a group of female “computers,” charting the stars for a renowned astronomer who calculated projects in “girl hours” and had no time for the women’s probing theories. As Henrietta, in her free time, attempted to measure the light and distance of stars, she also took measure of her life on Earth, trying to balance her dedication to science with family obligations and the possibility of love. This true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt was written by the Bay Area’s Lauren Gunderson, who has become America’s most produced playwright. It explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries, when women’s ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them..
“THE GREAT AMERICAN TRAILER PARK MUSICAL” 10TH Anniversary Revival
June 2-18, 2023
In 2012, Lucky Penny brought this one-of-a-kind, blow-theroof-off musical to the Napa Valley Playhouse in Napa. Now it’s time for a tenth anniversary revival starring much of the original cast! Break out your best Trailer Trash attire and get ready for the show the creators David Nehls and Betsy Kelso call “an all-American musical odyssey through agoraphobia, adultery, hysterical pregnancy, strippers, huffing, electric chairs, flan, roadkill, toll collecting, spray cheese, guns, and disco.” The gang from Stark, Florida’s ‘Armadillo Acres’ might be even more raunchy and hilarious 10 years later. Sure to be Napa’s adult-oriented theatre event of the year.

ARTS IN APRIL
Painting Pictures ... a poet will capture the same glint, or twinkle, or sparkle or flare, painting the picture with words.
We often consider art as visual. Whether it be a sculpture, a painter’s creation on canvas made from oil and color, tints and hues, the composition itself leading our eyes through the scene. But the words of a poet, written on paper, take form we may see as we read, but hearing the words, the rhythm . . . the speed . . . the work of a poet paints a picture we see—even though our eyes may be closed. Just as an artist captures the shimmer of light on the crest of a wave, a glare—a poet will capture the same glint, or twinkle, or sparkle or flare, painting the picture with words.
Marianne Lyon
Napa County’s Poet Laureate (2021-2023) Author of over 240 published poems, Marianne encourages others to “ignite their inner poet.” As she notes in her comments on the Napa County Poet Laureate website, “Through my teaching career, there are few people I have met who have not been brushed by poetry. Their stories inspired songs, verse, even quirky rhymes. Often their memories haloed their verse. Poetry is part of everyone’s life even if they are not aware of it.” When I asked Marianne how she conjures the words with which she crafts her work, she replied with a poem. A POEM SUMMONS ME She summons me to converse with her seeks me out from I don’t know where maybe India’s Ganges Montana Rockies Words open my eyes I see myself Verbs climb me up to jagged top of highest mountain below my childhood ripples like a stream fed from snowy peak Her voice is true song of my speechless soul I feel myself break loose into an abyss wait for another verse of my life to appear Poetic inspiration takes form in subtle ways for Marianne. VIBRATO TAKE 2 Do you have a moment to listen for just a little while away from your daunting to-do’s Lean into that which is beyond words Go even farther than the melody Where sounds become a threshold into a way of being Harmony renders as if breathing over me like a god I can’t comprehend the immensity any more than a teacup can collect a waterfall My own breathing captures imitates magnified trembling phrases Gorgeously I drink from minor timbre inviting me on journey Enthralling seconds carry entangle me in pain and joy sounds seem to unshutter my soul I feel myself seeing flowers unwrapping their petals Sounds trails off like skywriting Can you still taste canorous current smooth like honey from a spoon Do not forget this moment It could mean everything

Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition for high school students across the country. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has grown to reach more than 4 million students and 65,000 teachers from 16,000 schools in every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa.

The first runner up winner and recipient of a $100 award is Paige Rosal, 10th grade (American Canyon High School). The competition, presented in partnership with Arts Council Napa Valley, California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. County virtually participated in the Poetry Out Loud County Competition produced by the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center and sponsored by the California Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, The Poetry Foundation, Napa Bookmine, and The Robert Louis Stevenson Museum. Bankole, who will now move on to the state competition, recited an impassioned yet powerfully graceful rendition of “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou. On her second recitation, Bankole narrated, “Brother, I’ve seen some” by Kabir with a clever repartee—it felt as if she lived the story herself and was telling it first-hand. Rosal, our first runner up, started with a strong performance of “Idea 61: Since there’s no help, come let us kiss and part” by Michael Drayton, and finished commandingly with “The Contract Says: We’d Like the Conversation to be Bilingual” by Ada Limoń. A complete list of the contestants and the poems recited can be found on the Arts Council Napa Valley website. Gabrielle George (Justin-Siena High School), Emma Ordonez-Enos (Vintage High School), and Jenifer Canseco and Veronica Morris (Napa High School).” Mistura Bankole, the Napa county winner, advanced to the California State contest. Each champion at the state level will receive $200 and compete virtually for the national championship, at a date to be determined this spring. ~ Kerry Ahearn, Aldea’s current CEO and first female leader in its 50 year history, with her staff.
Aldea Celebrates 50 Years as the Essential Community Partner for Children and Families in Napa, Solano and Sonoma Counties If you had asked Harris Nussbaum in 1972 whether he would still be involved with Aldea in 2022, he’d have laughed at you. “I didn’t think about Aldea being around for 50 years; I only saw the immediate need and wanted to have an impact,” says Harris, reflecting on his role as concerned citizen and one of Aldea’s founding board members. In 1973, Harris became Aldea’s second Board President to ensure the group’s vision of providing housing and extra support for foster youth in the Napa community Shortly after, the Board hired Allen Ewig to serve at Aldea’s first Executive Director. “Allen created stability and brought a high level of expertise that was needed. We started expanding. Allen’s vision took it to the next level, to what Aldea is today,” says Harris. In 2007, Allen became ill. “He expressed concern for Aldea’s future,” shares Harris. “Allen told me that he thought Aldea’s

Deputy Director Mark Bontrager would continue the vision and essence of Aldea.” Mark served as Executive Director for 14 years. During his tenure one of his top accomplishments includes strategically growing Aldea into the region’s largest foster care provider and specialty mental health clinic. Kerry Ahearn, LCSW was hired as Aldea’s Chief Executive Officer in December 2018. Current Board President Sandra Re Sims is excited for this next chapter, “It’s clear that Allen’s goal for helping children and families in need at Aldea lives on now through CEO Kerry Ahearn and Aldea’s staff.” Kerry Ahearn, a highly experienced, successful, and wellregarded leader, has an extensive track record of success in senior management of social services and behavioral health operations, as well as in health and human services departments of governmental agencies. While managing through a pandemic for the last two years, Kerry has been instrumental in expanding the SOAR program offering early detection of psychosis treatment to Sonoma County. Also, through her leadership, Aldea is expanding substance use disorder services that have only been available in Napa, into Solano County.
“Kerry has committed her entire career in managing community-based, behavioral health, social services and entitlement programs for children, adolescents, families and elders. We are grateful to have someone as experienced and community-focused to lead our organization,” said Aldea Board President, Sandy Re Sims. Sandy was appointed Board President in July 2017, after serving as board member since 2015. community partner for children and families. We believe that in a family’s most critical moments, the company of a trusted professional can mean the difference between strength and suffering. Every day, our expert staff walk with young people on their journey to healing, providing the care that brings both short term comfort and long-term resilience. Because with a community of support, they discover their own ability to create a new life, one moment at a time. As we make plans for the future of Aldea, we are also reflecting on its past. Over the last 50 years, a group of determined spirits, our talented staff, along with the help of donors, volunteers, supporters, and advocates – like you – have been altering the personal stories of thousands of abused and neglected children, their families. In our programs, hundreds of children a year experience healing. Aldea translates to “little village” in Spanish. The little village of Aldea’s staff, board, donors, volunteers, supporters, and advocates are committed to building a community that works for everyone; where people have their needs met so they can actively participate and contribute to this dynamic place we call home. The community was instrumental in Aldea’s development, and the community will be involved in helping Aldea meet its mission for years to come.

A CELEBRATION OF OUR
D
175th Anniversary
Different accomplishments call for different kinds of celebrations. For some, a simple fist bump fits the bill. Maybe what’s called for is a greeting card, a toast at the bar or a round of applause in the office. But we’re talking about Napa celebrating its 175th anniversary here, and that deserves to be shouted from the rooftop. And that’s exactly what Napa will do. Because whether you call it a demisemiseptcentennial or septaquintaquinquecentennial, a hundred and seventy-five

years is a long, long time. It calls for not one but two big events, both of which the Downtown Napa Association will host this summer. But first, let’s talk about that rooftop. On Saturday, June 11th, 300 people will attend one of two 5:00 p.m. receptions. The first will be at Sky & Vine atop Archer Hotel for pizza from Oenotri and sushi from Eiko’s, both enjoyed with premium Napa Valley wines or a cocktail. Some people will prefer the VIP experience

Those guests, will be able to taste through the wines of one of Mia Carta’s nine small-production Napa winery gems. After that, it will be time to sit down at a long table for dinner. A very long table, actually – it will stretch along First Street from Randolph down to and past Coombs Street, and will feature some of the best and eclectic menu items found downtown. Whichever reception you attend, save room for dinner. Guests will be seated at a long table. House. The main course? The acclaimed Paella del Dia from ZuZu. And what pairs best with it? The celebrated Duck Fat Fries from Compline and a Composed Summer Salad from Norman Rose, again, all to be enjoyed with wines that made Napa famous. Now let’s talk desserts. Sweets from Anette’s Chocolates, Sweetie Pies, Vintage Sweet Shoppe, Monday Bakery and Earth & Sky Chocolates will be everywhere. The California Brandy House will pair brandy with cigars from Napa Cigars, or enjoy a cocktail from The Arboretum by Napa Valley Distillery. Oh, and there will be musical entertainment everywhere, at just the right level and moods to make everything go down easy.
