Napa PBID Committed to

Downtown Beautification for Locals and Visitors Alike by Craig Smith

The Downtown Napa gallery show was still being curated, and already people had picked their personal favorites from the works on display. Is your pick the painting of birds by Ann Nunziatta, presented at Pearl and Soscol? Perhaps you like the Lilies by Katie Salenfriend, at the corner of Second and Randolph? If you lean towards abstraction, you’re favorite could be a work by the Baker Sisters, at the corner of First and Franklin. There are thirteen pieces for your viewing pleasure, all from local artists. Some compositions will touch your heart, others will challenge your mind. Odds are, you’ll find many of them to your liking. Oh – and all this beautiful art? It’s being displayed on the sides of utility boxes. Walk down just about any sidewalk in a commercial area, and at many intersections, you’ll come across utility boxes. Some house phone lines, others the controls for traffic lights and what not. All are usually grey or khaki green, terribly faded from the sun, and ugly. None of them are even close to appea ling or interesting. That’s no longer the case in Downtown Napa. This year, thirteen of those boxes have been covered with artwork from local artists. For their artwork to be considered for this project, artists submitted copies of their proposed art work. That was reviewed by two panels, one made up of city staff and community-based artists, and another by the PBID committee, which is funding the effort. PBID is the Downtown Napa Property Based Improvement District. PBID membership is comprised of all property owners in the Downtown and Oxbow areas. That board, Left: MELISSA & MERCEDES BAKER

sort of the property owners’ counterpart to the Downtown Napa Association, is always looking for ways to help downtown businesses. When the City of Napa rolled out its Parklet program, the PBID Committee set aside $190,000 to provide grants for businesses to build them. PBID introduced the hanging flower basket program downtown five years ago and is also responsible for rooftop lighting, holiday decorations and the Christmas tree in Veterans Park. “PBID members are committed to making downtown an interesting and aesthetically pleasing experience for Napa residents and visitors,” said Ryan Gregory, PBID Committee Chair. “The utility boxes provided an opportunity to turn the ordinary into something special that people can enjoy. The artwork that we selected is varied – some of it whimsical, some thought provoking while others are simply beautiful art. It’s the proverbial turning lemons into lemonade.” ANN NUNZIATA JULIA CRANE

Michael Holcomb Jr., a member of both the PBID committee and of the Napa Rail Arts District (also known as RAD) brought the idea of wrapping utility boxes to PBID. For him, it began personally. “My son was born prematurely, and spent his first five months in Walnut Creek. We were there constantly.” Holcomb noticed that many boxes in Walnut Creek were wrapped in art. “It’s a big deal down there.” Bringing that to Napa was a natural for him. “The art in Napa is already fantastic, and PBID is the perfect vehicle to provide this,” said Holcomb.” It’s an improvement to downtown that locals can appreciate and enjoy, and visitors will like it as well.” You can enjoy the art from your car, bicycle, or on your own walking tour. For a list of all the locations and the artists biographies, visit DoNapa.com. And this is probably just the start – look for more artwork from PBID in the months to come.

APRIL IS

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH BLUE RIBBON MONTH by Harmony Plenty

E

Every April, the Napa County Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAPC) commemorates Child Abuse Prevention Month by bringing awareness to this important issue and raising funds to support families and keep children safe. Led by Cope Family Center and comprised of representatives from nonprofit organizations, the faith-based community, and law enforcement and government agencies, CAPC coordinates Napa County’s efforts to prevent and respond to child abuse and neglect. Each year, CAPC reports on the state of the health and wellbeing of Napa County’s children and families. In 2020, there were 162 confirmed cases of abuse or neglect, but since child maltreatment is greatly under reported, the true number of victims is estimated to be closer to 500. 20

napavalleymarketplace.com

April 2021

“We know that the COVID-19 pandemic and efforts to contain it are taking a serious toll on families,” said Michele Grupe, CAPC Co-Chair and Cope Executive Director. “Parents who are trying to get by must make hard decisions like choosing between prescriptions and food. They struggle to find safe and reliable childcare. They have become part-time teachers, often facing language, technology or educational barriers to helping their children.” The extreme stress that parents are facing puts their children at greater risk of maltreatment, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, and exposure to family violence. Children are further vulnerable to abuse and neglect during the pandemic because they are largely hidden from view. Shelter-at-home orders and school closures have left far

too many at-risk children isolated at home, without the watchful gaze of teachers, coaches and friends. “In a virtual school setting with limited contact with students, for example, teachers have a harder time noticing bruises, changes in behavior, consistent hunger or other signs of abuse or neglect that would normally be reported,” said Grupe. The good news is that we can all help keep children safe. “Kids need strong families to grow and thrive safely, and families need supportive communities to lean on when tough times come,” said Julie Murphy, Program Director at Cope. “We can all play a role in building a strong and resilient community for Napa Valley’s children and families.” Blue Ribbon Month is an opportunity to learn more about child abuse in our community, raise awareness about how it can be prevented, and find out how we can each take small actions that make a big difference. “With the pandemic still limiting in-person activities, we’ve created opportunities that will allow the community to get involved while staying safe,” said Grupe. New this year is a virtual walkathon that encourages the community to walk 40 miles in April in honor of the estimated 40 monthly victims of child abuse in 2020 while also raising funds for Cope’s prevention programs. People can sign up as individuals or as a team and set their own fundraising goal. Another way to spread the word is to participate in the Blue Ribbon Scavenger Hunt and Instagram contest. Visit the scavenger hunt locations, snap a selfie and post it on Instagram to raise awareness and be entered to win weekly prizes. Local businesses are helping “Paint the Town Blue” to bring awareness and raise funds. There are dine-and-donates (or shop/sip/caffeinate -anddonates) throughout the month when businesses will donate a portion of proceeds to support Cope’s programs.

Contest: Spread the word about child abuse prevention and enter to win weekly prizes. Walk With Me virtual walkathon: Walk (or run, hike or bike) 40 miles and collect donations for prevention programs. Tree of Life Community Art Project: Create public art to inspire hope and healing. Procrastinating Your Estate Planning?

“I have been contemplating getting a trust done for many years. That was until I spoke and met with Meghan and Anthony at Celaya Law. They explained the process in such simple terms that I felt compelled to take action. Upon retaining the firm, they immediately provided me with a concise list of things to gather, which I delivered, and voila…my trust was established! Thanks, Anthony and Meghan for protecting my estate and making the process so simple and sensible.” – Robert Kranson

Where Around the World Meets Home

HERITAGE EATS

T

by Kathleen Reynolds

The motto of Heritage Eats restaurant in Napa’s Bel Aire Plaza is “Where Around the World Meets Home.” Owners Benedict Koenig IV and his wife, Ali, believe in the motto when it comes to serving customers at all their establishments. “In 2014, I traveled to Israel, Thailand and India, which is when I conceived the idea of serving the food I’d enjoyed in each region,” says Koenig. “Both Ali and I have multicultural backgrounds and grew up with varied culinary traditions.”

Heritage Eats was so successful when it opened in 2015 that the pair soon decided to expand the business to Walnut Creek. “Once COVID hit,” says Koenig, “we temporarily, then permanently, closed the Walnut Creek store. We doubled down on Napa.” When they realized the pandemic was long-term, they wanted to do more to serve the Napa community.

“We had to think creatively and develop business opportunities to grow. We purchased a food truck, came up with a chicken wings concept and developed a lobster company brand. Now they have four different businesses: Heritage Eats, Best Food Truck Ever, Haven Napa, and, most recently, Napa Valley Lobster Co—all of which have catering options. Heritage @ Home offers meal kits Thursday through Sunday for folks to whip up Heritage Eats dishes in their own kitchens. The Best Food Truck Ever offers breakfast, burgers, chicken sandwiches and fries. They can be found at the Napa Farmers Market and soon on Soscol Avenue. Haven Napa on Industrial Way specializes in chicken wings with a myriad of sauce options. Napa Valley Lobster can set up for six or 600 in a customer’s backyard with a full lobster boil—including all the vegetables, bibs, wipes and instructions or staff to cook for you. Each of the businesses have their own social media, work with DoorDash or Uber Eats, and take online orders. “The restaurant was going well, even in COVID, because we had outdoor seating already set up to care for our customers. People want to get out of the house and have ‘normal experiences’ again.” They brought on Charles Whittaker as their business partner and General Manager of the restaurant. “Charles is the driving force of our culinary influence. The concept hasn’t changed, and we still have our original recipes in use. Our initial spear and spark remain.” SERVING NAPA DAILY, 11AM-8PM | HERITAGEEATS.COM April 2021

Koenig and Whittaker say that customer favorites are the Spicy Jerk Chicken Tacos, Lemongrass Pork Bao Buns and limited time offerings like the Papa K Burger.

ALI KOENIG AND BENEDICT KOENIG IV

While they were unique when they opened six years ago, Whittaker says, “Now the rest of the food culture has caught up with us. Over time, Heritage Eats rounded out its menu, repackaged itself and now it’s part of our whole line.”

Whittaker estimates that about 50% of the diners are loyal repeat customers. “We recognize the faces and know we don’t have to introduce the concept.” Koenig agrees. “We’ve always wanted to be a ‘locals first’ place with a community-centered brand. We’ve worked with the Rotary, Little League and the

school systems. On weekends and holidays, we may see unfamiliar faces, although many of those become repeat Heritage Eats customers returning when they next visit Napa.” “We’re proud of how the business has sustained itself, especially after last year. I see kids now entering college who, when they first came in, weren’t even in high school. It also speaks volumes, I think, to be able to hire local people who’ve grown up with the community. We have one young woman who went from this being her first job to now managing our food truck. “We’re part of their lives,” he continues. “Last year, everyone’s world ended. We were extremely nervous in those tense moments, but we have the strength of our team character. The community embraced and supported us. Here

we are a year later and are optimistic and feeling gratitude to the community.” In 2015, Heritage Eats was named Napa Chamber of Commerce Small Business Member of the Year. The following year, Zagat listed them as one the 10 Hottest Restaurants in Napa Valley. In 2020 Senator Bill Dodd recognized them as Small Business of the Year. Koenig is humbled by the accolades. “We have angels watching over us,” says Koenig. “Travis Stanley of the Napa Chamber has been a strong advocate. Linsey Gallagher, CEO of Visit Napa Valley, has been great. The Napa Register folks give us a platform when we have news to share.” We at Napa Valley Marketplace Magazine wish Heritage Eats and its sister companies much longevity.

Thelma Taylor

COMMUNITY IS HER PRIORITY by Kathleen Reynolds

“Community is everything to me,” says Thelma Taylor of Yountville. “It’s so important, I can’t leave.” Thelma has been part of the Napa community since 1984 and to say she’s a colorful character is no exaggeration. “I’ve been married nine times,” she says. “I was 15 years old the first time I got married.” She ran away from her home in Norfolk, Virginia, with her 16-year-old fiancé in tow. “My cousin drove us across state lines so we could get married in North Carolina.” The marriage didn’t last long before she divorced. “I was married again when I was almost 17, to a sailor,” she says, her inflection still hinting of a Southern drawl. The couple moved to Baltimore, and she began to drink alcohol. “He was physically abusive,” she says, “like my father. Both of my parents were alcoholics.” They moved to Southern California in 1957 after the birth of her first child, but the drinking continued. There were several more moves around California, and five additional 34

children—along with more divorces. What brought Thelma to Napa involved a few steps on the way. “I was living in Dublin and ended up with three DUIs,” she says. “I was told either addiction treatment or jail. Husband number eight got me into a six-month treatment program at Serenity House in Loomis.” At Serenity House, she found her calling. “I began taking classes at Sacramento State in Alcoholism and Drug Addiction which resulted in an internship that brought me to St. Helena.”She’s been sober and single since 1984. “I didn’t know what love was,” Thelma says. “I was trying to fill a gap in my heart.” Thelma turned her heart and her attention toward helping others. As a Mental Health Counselor at the Yountville Veteran’s Home, she worked with substance abuse clients

prior to retiring 11 years ago. Her new life included volunteering at the Lincoln Theater and the Yountville Visitor’s Center. She’s also helped at the Veteran’s Home Dementia and Memory Unit.

six children range in age from 51 to 61: four boys and two girls. Her 25 grandchildren have produced 28

Her hobbies don’t end there, although joint problems have slowed her down somewhat. “I love bocce ball, but my knees have prevented me from playing. I used to hike and do rock finding; especially the heart (shaped) ones.

In December 2009, Thelma joined Project KIKS, which stands for A Kind Initiative for Kids Shoes. She has served as a Founding Contributor, Board Chairwoman and volunteer. KIKS is a 501c3 charitable organization which began by distributing shoes to children in Africa and has expanded into supplying rice and installing water tanks there. The organization helped during the 2014 Ebola virus crisis, teaching Ebola prevention, hand washing and sanitation. It has donated approximately a dozen 500-gallon tanks for safe drinking water to schools for the children. In addition, they donate and distribute books to elementary students.

“I love to camp and swim,” says Thelma. “As a youth, I did a lot of skating and my first job was as a curb service waitress on skates in Norfolk at Stoney’s. I also like bingo.” Currently residing in Rancho Napa, she reiterates that community is everything to her. “All my neighbors are volunteers and I love being part of that.”

Project KIKS doesn’t overlook the needy closer to home.

great grandkids and one great-great granddaughter.

“During the fires, we delivered shoes to local schools; we’ve supplied coats and shoes to the women at the Veteran’s Home and provided shoes to children from low-income families during Shop with a Cop at Christmastime. We often work with the Kiwanis Clubs in Napa and Yountville.”

Not content to interact only through volunteer work, Thelma leads an active lifestyle which includes dancing.

Thelma was recently honored with a Humanitarian Award celebrated in Liberia, Ghana and South Africa on Christmas Day. “They call me ‘Mama Thelma’ in Africa,” she says and chuckles. In her personal life, ‘Mama Thelma’s’

around. If your birthday has a zero or a five as an ending, everyone brings you a present.”

“I have been tapping for 25 years with Dolly’s Tappers,” she says. “We’ve performed all over. The last time was at the Lincoln Theater with the Veterans in Yountville. We were at every Fourth of July at the Veteran’s Home and at the Napa Valley Follies. “Our dancers are a very close group. We get together every three months and celebrate our birthdays. We all bring funny cards and pass them

A public speaker for Alcoholics Anonymous for ten years, Thelma has traveled often but mostly speaks locally now. She is active in the Mormon Church with the Women’s Relief Society, teaching classes on spirituality and other subjects. She will be 37 years sober this June and enjoys helping any way she can. People often come to her for advice. “I want people to know there’s always a place for them to go if they need help.” Through volunteering or entertaining, Thelma makes commitment to the community her priority. The local area and the world at large are better, more compassionate places because of people like Thelma Taylor.

Health & Aging: Is Your Family Ready to Cover the Costs? Use these four questions as a guide to help you plan ahead for future medical and caregiving needs. Most people don’t want to think about the health-related what-ifs that come with aging, let alone talk about them — especially with family. Nonetheless, that conversation is critical to have. Having a plan in place that you’ve put together as a family can free everyone up to focus on each other, instead of worrying about where the money will come from should you, or an aging parent or spouse, fall ill. “The best time to talk about these matters is before you need to,” notes Cynthia Hutchins, director of financial gerontology at Bank of America. Below are four questions to help you start having these important family talks with your spouse, your children, your parents and your siblings. Use them to share your expectations with your family. Consult your financial advisor about ways to prepare financially for the healthcare costs that may occur. And keep talking as years go by and circumstances change. While no one can know the future, being prepared for what might come next can make the road ahead easier. Here are four questions that can help you start having these important family conversations. 1. Where will the money come from? Talk about potential expenses associated with a long-term illness, such as home healthcare or modifications

to the family home to accommodate a future disability. Should your parents purchase disability or long-term care insurance, consider choices such as hybrid forms of life insurance and health savings accounts, or simply save and invest more? Review your choices with your financial advisor, who can help you ensure that your retirement and any other goals aren’t put in jeopardy. 2. Will our parents have the care they need as they grow older? Many people struggle with aging parents’ unwillingness to face their limitations. That’s why it can be wise to bring up these issues early. Ask specific questions like: At what point would it make sense for you to stop driving, or to have a caretaker come in to help with the meals? Kate Wilber, professor of gerontology at the University of Southern California — Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, says. “Often, at first, you’ll be rebuffed. This will likely take more than one conversation.” 3. Who will provide the caregiving, if it is needed? Hutchins recommends that siblings should talk among themselves about how they’ll share the caregiving role. “You want to be sure that both your parents and your own needs are considered. Sometimes it makes sense to cobble together a combination of in-

home and outside care,” she says, where siblings can at least share costs, if not the hands-on responsibilities. 4. What about end-of-life issues? Among the things to consider: Which medical treatments do you and your parents want to be used or avoided at the end of your lives?
