We want to introduce everyone to Napa Integrated Medicine! The first of it’s kind regenerative clinic devoted entirely toward improving the movement and functionality of patients without the need for narcotics or surgery! Our team is devoted to establishing the first of it’s kind Functional Medicine Regenerative clinic in Napa. We focus on the maximum results for injury recovery, joint rehabilitation with out surgery, and post-surgical recovery. No other clinic in Northern California offers the type and quality of care that we are pioneering! What makes us different? The corporation was founded on the golden rule... “We treat each and every patient how we would like to be treated.” We do this by providing unique care for: ✓ Hip Pain

✓ Hand Pain

✓ Knee Pain ✓ Foot Pain

✓ Shoulder Pain ✓ Ankle Pain ✓ Arm Pain

✓ Chronic Spinal Injuries

Our patients see amazing results! It starts with the highly detailed examination – allowing us to get the original cause or causes of your problem. By utilizing functional medicine, regenerative medicine, chiropractic, physio-therapy, sound nutritional guidance and state of the art therapy equipment our patients experience one of the best and quickest recovery processes available. By screening our patients and providing a thorough examination the doctors then meet to review viability and the treatment protocols to best get this patient from their current state to where they can feel and do the most! It’s unlike any practice in Northern California because the patient care is truly a “Team Effort”! Jonathan Figg MD, Karsten Garduce NP, and David Eade DC, have a combined 34 years of technical, practical and “old fashioned” serve the patient experience. It’s our attitude and commitment that are the driving forces of this new Medical Office. What makes it different is that from the moment the patient enters care they are supervised at every step along the way. From Pre-Therapy, to Procedure to PostTherapy you are a person that is inspired. Not just given an insurance number and told to wait indefinitely! You are delivered a new protocol in health care. One that seeks to challenge the standards of care and lift them to a new level! Napa Valley Integrative Medicine is truly unique. And we look forward to working with our community to establish an ongoing level of trust and outcomes that will help to change the field. We seek to educate the patient on the possibility of cartilage preservation. Returning to a level of living that wasn’t possible before is what we are working to achieve. We do this without long term use of narcotics, opiates and costly replacement surgeries. When we get down to the basics of why we live it’s truly about enjoying each and every day wth all of our faculties working at their best! Not everyone is a candidate. Sometimes the need for surgery is present and when it is, we make sure we refer you to some of the best to perform the procedures but most importantly we work with you to get and maintain the best outcomes. That’s why we have our initial consultation and examination to see if this process is right for you.

Owning rental property, whether it’s a single-family home or a large commercial property, can be a great long-term investment. Real estate provides an owner with immediate income and asset appreciation that has consistently increased over time; especially here in the Wine Country. But, it can also be a real headache. Aspects of owning investment property can sometimes be problematic for an owner who isn’t a full time property manager. “A lot of people may not understand how much time goes into maintaining an investment property or how essential it is to keep up to date on the latest Landlord-Tenant laws.” says Jessica Buurma, who,

Jessica and Damian

with business partner Damian Bennett owns the newly opened First & Main Property Management in Napa. The two share a wealth of knowledge and have years of experience in managing residential and commercial properties. Buurma and Bennett take the fiduciary responsibility that comes with their role in property management seriously. “We’re here to protect an investment, grow it, and make sure that the owner & tenant are both treated fairly,” said Bennett. “A property manager does more than just find a qualified tenant and sign a lease. They keep the owner informed of local market trends and vacancy rates, both of which will impact a property’s

overall performance,” she added. Besides Landlord/Tenant matters, it is also First & Main Property Management’s responsibility to oversee the physical asset. “We continually evaluate the properties we manage, evaluating maintenance issues and looking for opportunities to upgrade properties in order to maximize the owner’s investment,” said Bennett. For example, they recently helped one of their new owners completely remodel a small apartment property, and are now re-leasing the property for them. “The transformation was amazing, and the returns will no doubt reflect their capital investment.” said Buurma. Buurma grew up in Napa, and

began her property management career nearly twelve years ago. Over the years she’s built a large portfolio of commercial and residential properties and created great relationships with many local vendors. Bennett spent nearly two decades working as an executive for tech giants like Hewlett Packard and Apple. After leaving the tech industry and moving to Napa he started managing his own vacation rental. Bennett took a job doing accounting and administrative work for a property management company, implementing ways to automate and streamline their operation. When told that the company they worked for would be sold to a San Francisco based company, After Before Jessica and Damian saw it as the perfect time to start First & Main Property Management. “Property at all times”. Bennett nodded in agreement, adding, “We management is very hands-on. If a problem arises we need want people to know that we’re responsive. MIC napa valley By Lisa Adams Walter

Most Sunday afternoons in downtown Napa near the Oxbow, live music can be heard rising from Feast it Forward—the hip, multi-faceted event venue, that is also a wine tasting destination and community gathering space on McKinstry Street. Rather than a booked and scheduled rotating roster of artists and bands, the Sunday afternoon music meetups are Open Mic Napa Valley live performance sessions, often hosted by singer, musician and songwriter Patti Quinlisk. Open mic and open jam sessions are a natural long-standing format for musical artists to collaborate and perform. Other open mic sessions across the globe include genres such as book readings, poetry, stand-up comedy, rapping and DJ spinning. Local musical open mic performances are not new, and in recent years

several regularly scheduled sessions have been taking place at venues such as wine tasting rooms, outdoor parking lots and the Napa Elks Lodge. In mid 2018, Quinlisk remembers an ongoing Thursday night open mic ran primarily by Brian Couch, ending as the hosting venue had closed down. “These open mics had become more of a pro jam and didn’t consistently follow an open mic forum,” she added. Quinlisk came up with the idea to create her own open mic—one that would not become a pro jam, but one that would follow the guidelines of a true open mic. Performers would sign up and perform in that order. To get started, Quinlisk reached out to Clark Harding of Napa Music Collective, a non-profit founded in 2015 to promote local music and provide a network and support

“All things food, wine and philanthropy with a taste of music.” for Napa County professional musicians. They understood that the need for more free concerts, music education and enrichment programs for adults and youth would benefit local citizens and visitors alike. Harding connected Quinslik with Katie Hamilton Shaffer of Feast it Forward in the Oxbow District. These creative leaders, each an artist in their own right, brainstormed the possibilities. “The three of us sat down and collaborated,” Quinslik recalls, “How would this open mic look? Could it be done and could we pull it off?” Feast it Forward, with a main building and showroom on McKinstry Street, now also

includes The Studio, as well as The Yard, an outdoor event and entertainment venue—a fitting place for emerging musicians and songwriters. Open Mic Napa Valley was born there on March 7, 2019. “It was a huge success on opening night,” which was on a Thursday, Quinslik said. Eventually the free sessions moved to Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. sign up time, followed by live music every Sunday (except the second Sunday of the month) from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Quinslik then took on full responsibility for either hosting or “hosting out” the meetups, with an idea that more hosts from a wider geographic area would expand the audience, which has worked. “We have had hosts from

San Francisco, Benicia and other nearby regions, not just Napa.” “Walking into Open Mic at Feast it Forward is kind of like walking into Cheers,” said Hamilton Shaffer, referencing the place where “everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came” on the hit sitcom of the same name. “It is a celebrated Sunday experience where somebody may not want to go perform on the big stage, but they get to be heard on our intimate stage. We have also had spoken word and comedy open mics. It gives us the opportunity to support people that want to create. There is no judgement, and there is an immense amount of talent. Plus, it’s just a fun place for people to relax and hang out.” Recently the Open Mic Napa Valley Facebook page @ openmicnapa was established, working collaboratively with The Napa MUSE to include content and information from artists, singers and songwriters— and provide a platform for musicians to submit their original music and share videos of their recent performances. “It has grown to a following of close to 500 people and it continues to grow every week,” Quinslik exclaimed. “Open Mic Napa Valley has grown so much that I had to ask three other musicians I met through the West Coast

Songwriters to come in and help me host, so that we’d never be short a host on a Sunday.” While the timeframes may evolve at Feast it Forward based upon longer daylight hours, Open Mic Napa Valley is right at home where they have landed. “Our tagline is ‘all things food, wine and philanthropy with a taste of music.’ Our site is a culturally-stimulating playground where people can create music and enjoy food, wine and art,” Hamilton Shaffer concluded. Interest in Open Mic Napa Valley is continuing to evolve. Quinlisk continues to host the events as a service and gift for the artist and songwriter community. Meanwhile, as venues are opening up around the valley, she will be busy not only hosting others, but performing as a solo, duo and full band artist on her own. To hear Quinlisk’s music check out Poppy House Tarot on YouTube. For more information send an email to sweetpattycake@icloud.com or call 707.286.9556.

Service

DO YOU: 1. Want to make new friends, and 2. Want to be a positive contributor to your community? Then, joining a service club may be for you. But where do you start? What’s the difference in the clubs in our area? We asked several Napa service clubs these questions and encourage you to check their websites for further information. Both Rotary and Kiwanis have more than one group that meets at different times and days of the week. The first club we asked was the lunchtime Rotary Club of Napa, which meets each Wednesday at 12 noon at the Napa Elks Lodge. Their website is naparotary.org. It was first chartered in 1920. Since then, it has dedicated itself to the goals of Rotary International, which includes the worldwide eradication of Polio. “We have been around the valley for over 100 years,” says Rotary Club of Napa President Jim Lyon. “We have 24

a history of service. But it is not just the projects, it is the membership and things that we do every day both professionally and personally. We take pride in our club for the diversity of membership and service. Rotary is a family. The bonds within our club are strong and the Rotary Club of Napa networks with the two other clubs in Napa plus the thousands of other clubs around the world.” “We have raised millions of dollars for both the Lighthouse for the Blind and the Enchanted Hills Camp on Mt. Veeder Road plus services for veterans.” How are they different from other service clubs? “We are different because of our membership. The Rotary Club of Napa Rotarians are men and women who live, work and play in Napa Valley. We are people who care deeply for the health and welfare of all people and the life on this planet. In the end it is all good.”

The Rotary Club of North Napa meet on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. at 801 8th Street, northnaparotary.org. This club was chartered in 1975 with 26 members. The club has grown since then but still describes itself as “small but mighty.” Their first fundraiser was a Pit Barbecue which raised $2,500 for playground equipment and that tradition has continued through the years. Their current fundraiser is the Rotary Club of North Napa Homebrewers Classic which showcases Bay Area Homebrewers and their beer with funds raised going to various local nonprofits. “We have over 40 years of giving back to this community through our local nonprofit organizations, in both financial donations and hands on work projects,” says Sherry Webber, Rotary Club of North Napa president. “One of our long-time members said, “We really have made this a better place to live.” “Our biggest accomplishment is the support we’ve given to NEWS Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse Services. We’ve renovated and maintained their living conditions where over 100 women, men and children go to seek shelter annually.”

Clubs

IN NAPA By Kathleen Reynolds

“We have many members who know Napa well and care deeply about our community. I think it’s who the people are that make us different from other clubs, their willingness to care and give back regularly; their caring nature to make people feel worthy of living in a better environment.” The third Rotary group is Rotary Club of Napa Sunrise, napasunriserotary.net, which meets at Silverado Country Club on Thursdays at 7:00 a.m. The Kiwanis Club of Napa, kiwanisclubofnapa.org, is another large organization. It meets every Thursday at 12 noon at the Elks Lodge in Napa.

The Kiwanis Club of Napa is within Division 8 of the Cal-Nev-Ha District of Kiwanis International. Founded in 1922, it is the oldest club in Division 8. The Club’s priority is to assist the youth and seniors of the community in two primary ways: by community giving and by performing direct community service. To support its community giving program, the Club holds two major annual fundraisers. The Crab Feed is held in February and the fall fundraiser is held in October, each of which typically net approximately $40,000. These funds are then distributed throughout the year to youth and senior-oriented community programs and to graduating high school seniors via scholarships. The Club also provides direct community service. Jill Cadloni is the Kiwanis of Napa president. “What makes our club so special is that we are one big happy family of 120 members who enjoy having fun doing service projects for our community,” says Jill. “Our club’s biggest achievement is having built over 75 playgrounds for the children of Napa County. The Club also built benches along the River Trail, so users have a place to sit.” They take handicapped children on special trips throughout the year and participate in the annual Salvation Army holiday bell-ringing fundraiser. In the past, they have built a greenhouse at Connolly Ranch, provided holiday gifts to needy families and participated in Rebuilding Together. The Club focuses on helping people that need a hand and not a handout. And most recently, The Kiwanis Club of Napa organizedthe very successful “Napa Valley To Ukraine Benefit Concert” held at the Napa Valley Expo. It was a very intense three weeks of planning, with the help of many community members joining in the effort. Over $102,000 was raised for the refugee humanitarian relief, a proud accomplishment. “We are different from other service clubs in that we provide a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities all the while with volunteering our skills, rather than just writing a check.” Another Kiwanis organization is Kiwanis of Greater Napa, kiwanisgreaternapa.org, meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 a.m. at Downtown Joe’s in Napa. The second and fourth Tuesday of the month, they have a Zoom meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Soroptimist International of Napa, soroptimistnapa.org, meets on the second and third Tuesdays of the month, at 12 noon, at the Embassy Suites. Soroptimist is a service club that supports women and girls with access to education and training. “I feel our club is special because of how long we have been a club,” says President Leigh Krieger. “We are celebrating our 100-year anniversary this year. We’ve been a chapter here in Napa for 81 years. Also, the women in the club are amazing.” “It’s hard to choose the most important contribution we make because there are so many. I would say it is the money that we have been able to continuously give out every year in scholarships. The last couple of years we have been able to give out almost $10,000 in scholarships to eight women, as well as awards for girls in the community.”

“Our club is a bit different because our focus is on women and girls both here and throughout the world. We’re making lives better for them and their families.” Do these organizations sound good to you? Check their websites for membership information.

Growing Roses “There is perhaps

no better time for roses in the Napa Valley than the month of May.”

There is perhaps no better time for roses in the Napa Valley than the month of May. All over town rose bushes are sporting their shiny new leaves and their first flush of flowers. Growing roses in our climate is not difficult at all, but can often become overly complicated if you source your advice online which may be aimed at an audience who lives in colder climes. Here is the information you need to know to grow great roses in the Napa Valley.

Be sure to mark your calendars for rose success. Roses follow a predictable schedule here in the Napa Valley. Bare root roses arrive at garden centers in late December and are sold as bare root until the end of January. March is when you want to give your existing roses their first dose of fertilizer for the year. New roses should remain in their black nursery containers until April 1st, which is when they have rooted out properly. Roses burst into full bloom in May and need to be deadheaded after their first

blooms fade in order to encourage the maximum number of flowers in June and July. As long as we’re not in the middle of a heat wave, fertilize monthly with a balanced fertilizer up until late summer. December is the perfect time to prune your roses in the Napa Valley. VAN WINDEN GARDEN CENTER’S

on your rose in March, mix 2 tablespoons E. B. Stone Sul Po Mag with 1 cup Alfalfa Meal and ½ cup Master Nursery Rose & Flower Food. Scratch this mix into the soil at the base of your rose and water it in well. When shopping for a rose, consider inspecting the canes. Roses come in grades. You can find all grades of roses sold around the valley in the winter but only reputable locally-owned garden centers stock the highest quality roses these days. It is fair to be wary of cheaply priced roses that have few canes or are dipped in wax. Here’s how roses are graded: #1 is the best of a variety. These have three or more healthy canes and a strong root system.

#1.5 roses have two or more thin canes and usually take longer to develop. #2 roses have one or two small, thin canes and may require extra care to establish. Iceberg is the most popular rose variety in the Napa Valley and for good reason! This variety is covered in romantic white blooms May through December as long as you deadhead it (cut off the spent blooms) every once in a while. Icebergs, like all roses, like to stay evenly moist at all times. In drought-conscious California, know that a three inch layer of mulch around the base of the plant can cut water needs back by up to 40%. Water all your rose varieties before 10am and avoid getting

moisture on the foliage to lessen the chance of fungus spores taking hold. Deadheading is necessary for a full summer of blooms. When looking at the flowering stem of a rose, you will notice that the leaves have fewer leaflets closer to the flowers. When snipping off the spent blooms, you want to make a sharp diagonal cut just above the highest leaf with the full number of leaflets. This will encourage the growth of a new flowering stem for a full season of rose flowers. When breeding roses, it is difficult to have it all. Often rose breeders have to choose between scent, disease resistance, reblooming, and a long vase life. There are a few different classes of hybrid roses, some of which are more floriferous and some of which may have fewer flowers but work better for cutting and bringing inside. Hybrid tea roses are the classic choice for cut flowers as they mostly bloom singly on a long stem, while floribunda roses bloom in large clusters for an impressive show on the shrub. Roses sometimes come in series with a range of bold colors but all sharing common traits. Veranda® roses have been bred to perform well in containers and still give you the look of English garden roses. The Eleganza® series is comprised of a wonderful collection of modern hybrid tea roses with a renowned disease resistance. Knock Out® roses are ‘self cleaning’ and continue to put on new buds even if they’re not deadheaded. The Drift® series are some of the smallest roses available and grow to be only a foot and half tall. Our winters are not normally cold enough to trigger roses into a dormant state on their own so it is necessary

to force them into dormancy by pruning them back and removing all their leaves by hand. This can be akin to ripping off a bandaid because here in the Napa Valley, roses are often still blooming and the foliage may look great in December if we’re having a mild winter! But please trust that giving your rose a fresh start for the new year is what is best for your plant. Leaves that look great in the winter will surely be covered in fungus by the following summer. Pruning roses can be intimidating but is necessary for the plant to be refreshed each year and keep disease at bay. The staff at your local garden center are wonderful sources for information about pruning roses, choosing varieties for your garden, managing disease, and more! Sourcing your gardening information from professionals that have experience growing in your same locale will lead you in the right direction and set you up for gardening success. May is an ideal time to shop for roses since you can see the blooms and smell the scents for yourself. Enjoy this beautiful season and get out in your garden and have some fun.

M as in Margaret By Linda Bausch

Empress M, an authentic Chinese restaurant, is situated at the curve of Silverado Trail just off of Imola—the setting chosen by a knowledgeable and ambitious group of people who love food and Napa Valley. The owners and executive team of culinary professionals have utilized their expertise to create “meaningful and sustainable exchanges involving culinary, education and historical programs.” As quoted for their website empress.us. Margaret Wong, the owner and driving force behind the endeavour is an expert in global trade and US China relations. At Empress M, her intent was to present a unique, yet traditional, Chinese culinary offering and peek into the Chinese culture. Relating her own personal journey to that of Empress Wu ZeTian, the only Chinese Empress, who had three distinct stages of her life—from concubine, to wife of Emperor, then Empress—here, in Napa, Margaret Wong created Empress M—M as in Margaret. Tucked in the courtyard, surrounded by mature foliage, is an open patio with outdoor seating for casual dining. There is plenty of indoor seating, and the décor

keeps your eye wandering. A huge, wooden carving mounted on the main wall is a conversation piece on its own. On this early spring afternoon, the weather was the perfect temperature for sitting outside. We arrived between lunch and dinner and were pleasantly surprised to learn the previous “Happy Hour” process had changed. Up until a few weeks before our visit, there were only limited menu items available during Happy Hour, as the chefs were out of the kitchen at that time. Well, sometimes change is good, but in this case, change was great! Our server, Jeff, informed us we were now able to order off of the Happy Hour menu or from the full menu any time of the day. The chefs were in the kitchen. We ordered our drinks and took a little time to peruse the menu options. My martini came exactly as requested, Tanqueray gin, straight up and pretty dirty! It was perfect. My guest was happy to have his iced tea delivered—with lime—his preferred citrus of choice. (I know, it seems silly to mention, but in all honesty, he almost always has to ask for lime a second time, so when it the iced tea comes with it the first time, we notice!) After the drinks arrived and we placed our order, Jeff brought out the selection of sweet, spicy, and tangy condiment sauces which promised to pair well with the Pan-Fried Pot Stickers

Crispy Walnut Shrimp

menu items we selected from the Dim Sum and Small Plates menus. Our appetites were definitely piqued at this point. The table was then set with elegant share plates—a grey-toned floral graphic and a tiny hint of red which pops the logo—and the enamelled chopsticks added to the ambiance. We began with the Pan-Fried Pot Stickers, they were as expected; the tender noodle packets which had a tasty filling of pork and cabbage were steamed and then crisped on one side. The spicy sauce and soy was an excellent accompaniment. Our shared Beef Chow Fun was prepared generously with rib eye steak, bean sprouts, onion and wide rice noodles. The brown sauce was silky and savory, a classic rendition that we will enjoy again. Before we came to the restaurant, we were told by our friends not to miss the Phoenix Fried Shrimps. This was decidedly an excellent suggestion. The size of these succulent shrimps—delicious crunchy morsels—was impressive. There were two on the plate and they were very filling. We didn’t get to these until quite a while after they arrived at the table, but when we did they were still piping hot and oh-so-good.

To us, no Chinese restaurant outing is complete without Crispy Walnut Shrimp; it is always one of our favorites. The shrimp are well battered and bathed in a subtle, vanilla honey sauce. Looking at the menu, we chuckled when we saw Empress Banana Cream Pie in the dessert column. That was a little unexpected, but we knew right away we were going to have dessert tonight! We were happy when the huge piece of pie came to the table. We were already full, but who cares when such a tasty piece of creamy, banana goodness shows up. The pie is made in-house, piled high with luscious whipped cream, banana custard and chunks of ripe banana; it was the perfect ending to our meal. The service and food were excellent.

Patio Parklet Seating

The full menu is extensive and boasts many familiar items prepared in the classic Chinese style, using only the freshest meat, seafood and vegetables. Vegetarian options are noted. Our next visit will include a variety of items, starting with Lettuce Cups and Hot and Sour Soup, Mongolian Lamb Chops, Dan Dan Noodles, and Emperor Baked Sea Bass, I can’t wait! Empress M welcomes guests seven days a week. Happy hours are hosted between 3pm and 5pm every day. There is fun to be had in the bar for industry locals with a discount on Monday nights. Tuesday is Locals’ Night. Wednesday is Karaoke Night in the bar and Thursday night— Ladies Night, come on in for a 10% discount on cocktails. On Friday evening enjoy your favorite local bands and featured musicians playing. Ask about their special Chef ’s Menu available only on Sunday, details are on the website. There are special perks with Empress M Dynasty Club with exclusive rewards and special member benefits. Empress M welcomes private events including weddings, business lunches, dinners, or cocktail receptions. Call for details.

“While voicing concerns regarding her current trust and making sure her daughter with special needs was taken care of; I suggested my mom make an appointment with Celaya Law, as I know Anthony Celaya, and felt they could offer her better advice than I could. We scheduled an appointment and met with Meghan Avila, who treated us like family! She listened intently to my mom’s thoughts regarding her initial trust. Meghan made some suggestions and showed how a few small changes in her existing trust could help ease the transition of care and cost for my sister with special needs, as well as avoiding any potential family conflict regarding the distribution of her estate. I was very appreciative for Meghan’s insight and thoughtfulness in handling the details of my mom’s estate; she was keenly aware of family being the priority! Moreover, my mom was extremely grateful and downright amazed at the lifetime of – Kimberly Sykes, Napa Valley client care! The experience has been a great relief and a blessing.”

When literary editor Alice Murphy meets a young soldier just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past—and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives. With beautiful melodies and powerfully moving characters, the story unfolds as a rich tapestry of deep emotion.
