Who’s Fede?

What does represent Nvayrk for you?

I’m one of the thousands of bloody Italians living in London. I’m 28 and I left Italy when I was 21. I love this city. It’s so inspirational and, I think, I will never get tired of it. I’m vegetarian (good excuse if I’m slower than other people, haha), I love music and travelling, with my bike of course.

NVAYRK represent a worldwide community of people standing for the same passion. Ride and have fun. Thanks to this community I had the chance to meet people, for the first time, in places such as Mexico City, LA, San Francisco and it felt like we were friends from ages. This is what the community is all about.

What’s passion for cycling for you? Cycling for me it’s all about sharing a passion with other people. With a bike you can race with your mates, suffer with your mates, travel with your mates, and get drunk with your mates… So many things you can do with a bike. It makes you feel free, and I love it. We all love it.

How did you get into fixed gear and NVAYRK team? When I arrived here in London (I’m from the countryside so I had no idea what’s a fixed gear is) I noticed, straight away, so many people riding weird bikes around the town as fast as they could, using a walkie-talkie to communicate and I was so fascinated by them… That much, that I became a messenger too. I spent 2 years delivering stuff all around London and it was the best time of my life. During that period I met Peter. We became friends and we started to build our fixes and ride them. Thanks to him I had the chance to meet Beto, the man behind the project NVAYRK. It has always been our dream to race the Red Hook Criterium together, in the same team, and we feel glad and blessed to have realized it. 2k16 will be a great year for us.

How did you train for criterium? We usually train in a homemade circuit, in a park, here in London with track bikes. It’s really good because we can get confident with corners, sprints and braking. I just got myself a cyclocross bike which I will use to get resistance training as well.

What’s your rider profile? I’m a cyclist who just wants to have fun. I don’t take it too seriously to be honest. I believe in the team and on a race day it’s like a party. If we win we drink to celebrate, if we lose we drink anyway…

Who’s Michael? My name is Michael Stromberg and I ride for NVAYRK. Some people, particularly my mates in London, know me as ‘Shit Bag’. This self appointed nickname developed there when I was living in the UK, working and getting my Masters degree. It is meant to be somewhat Ironic, because I am a good dude, and well educated, but at the end of the day I am really just a tattooed, shit bag cyclist. So I gave myself the forum name ‘Yankee Shit Bag’ when joining the LFGSS forum, as a way to preemptively take the mick. It has gotten shortened to ‘Shit Bag’ over time, which is suiting now that I am back stateside, ‘Yankee’ doesn’t have the same cache over here.

What’s passion for cycling for you? Man, cycling is the most important thing in my life. Unlike people, I can always rely on my bikes, not to mention riding gives me more joy than anyone or anything ever has in my life. When people expect me to blow off my 6:00 a.m. ride to spend the evening with them, I just laugh. Bikes are my one true love, and they will always be around. People, money, and other things come and go.

How did you get into fixed gear and NVAYRK team? I started riding track bikes about 5 years ago, just as kind of a Tattooed punk around Las Vegas. Though I have always ridden bikes at some rate or another, this is when my passion for cycling really took off. The purity and fluidity of fixed gear gave me that feeling that is totally unique, on the edge of control at times, fast, and tough. A feeling that quickly reminded me of my roots as a competitive ski racer in Colorado. I got into NVAYRK shortly after moving to NYC, just from riding bikes. I rode with my friend Shelby quite a bit around Brooklyn and Manhattan. She soon introduced me to Beto, and informed me about the project. When they asked me to be a part of it, I said of course. This was all in the fall of 2014, I had never even raced a bike yet. In fact, my ‘friend’ profile on NVAYRK.commakes me sound like a ‘Fixie Skidder’ ha. But this is where I come from, riding bikes around the city, really fast, listening to deathcore and skitching busses, I still love that shit. But I love distance and racing.

What does represent Nvayrk for you? NVAYRK represents a collective of cyclists worldwide. That is why I am so stoked to be a part of it. The more I ride, race, and

travel, I am finding out that the cycling community is small and tight knit, worldwide, and the fixed gear scene is even smaller. I have friends worldwide and it is all because of cycling. This is what NVAYRK is all about, cycling connects.

How did you train for criterium? The way I train for the Crit, I don’t really consider training. Simply because riding bikes hard and fast is my favorite thing to do, and every free moment I have this is what I want to be doing. I usually ride solo, road bikes mostly these days, hard and fast for 75+ miles, listening to deathcore for a few hours straight. People call me crazy, I love it. I owe a lot of my progression as a cyclist to tough bands like Carnifex, The Black Dahlia Murder, The Acacia Strain, Parkway Drive, and of course Slipknot. Ergo, I am inadvertently doing a lot of threshold training, ha.

What’s your cyclist profile? IF you have one... My cyclist profile can be found on NVAYRK, in the ‘friends’ section. http://www.nvayrk.com/friends Even though people change, and I spend most of my time on road bikes these days, much of it still holds true, and of course it is where I come from. One thing that will always hold true is my motto. Ride your fucking bike mate. So many people in the scene these days want to do everything but ride their bike it seems, take photos, pose, blog, whatever. That’s fine if that’s what you’re into, but at the end of the day it is all about bikes, ergo just ride your bike mate, save the talk, it’s whatever. I don’t have a garmin, a power meter, or even a cycling computer for that matter, I just want to ride my bikes man.

Who’s Peter? I’m 29 born in Slovakia city (Martin) city surrounded by Mountains 25km away where Peter Sagan was born and currently i live in London. I left Slovakia when just when i turned 19, i used to play professional ice hockey. Platform Ice Hockey and cycling i love spending time with my girlfriend, family and friends, traveling, hiking and snowboarding. I think what stand best for me is that i’m sport freak (not the one in front of TV) .

What’s passion for cycling for you? Cycling is giving me freedom and best way to escape from stress. There is not better way of discovering new places in world than on bicycle (unless you keep looking at your gps screen haha).

How did you get into fixed gear and NVAYRK team? First time when i came to London 10 years ago i noticed weird bicycles around the town and i always wanted to have one so one day i just build my first fixedgear i found that something unique, amazing i always loved Adrenalin sports and this was the one (Riding fast, one gear with no breaks through traffic in London). I got to know NVAYRK i think year before it was created, i knew Beto our friend and Manager through social media few weeks before me and my team mate Federico went from London to Amsterdam on fixedgear bikes and Beto was already that time supporting us.

What does represent Nvayrk for you? NVAYRK represent friendship, community of people from around the world sharing same passion. Cycling connects people around the world thanks to NVAYRK.

How did you train for criterium? On first red hook to Barcelona i didn’t train as much on track as i should i basically trained once on Track bike after year and a half brake from track (fixedgear) and week and a half before race i did one challenge (my dream) on road bike to go home to Slovakia from London on road bicycle which was 1768.8km with 18 397m elevation gain, across 6 countries in 9 days (75hours) with one friend of mine Alessandro and day after we arrived to Slovakia i went to Barcelona for Red Hook which was not the smartest move first because i didn’t train on track for over year and second because i was exhausted from big ride so in qualifying in first lap i crashed. For last Red Hook of this season in Milan i trained only on track bike with my team mate Federico and few other friends on our circuit in London.
