Welcome to the 59th year of the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival!

We are excited to offer eight wonderful concerts this season, beginning July 22nd and running through Labor Day weekend, at one of the most beautiful venues in the Commonwealth. As we continue to focus on bringing quality music to the Shenandoah Valley, this year’s line-up more than delivers in achieving that mission.

Being the longest running outdoor concert series in Virginia has been no easy task. The Festival has survived through recessions, a pandemic, as well as challenging weather events. If it was not for the support of our corporate and individual donors, we may not be celebrating 59 years, as ticket sales only make up approximately half of operating revenue. Please take a moment and recognize those businesses and individuals who provide monetary support so the Festival can continue to offer diverse, professional entertainment in the Shenandoah Valley that inspires people of all ages and backgrounds to make concert-going a lasting part of their lives. Some of these events include luncheons with musical entertainment, held at a different venue each month.

In addition to the luncheons, The Guild organizes Sunday theater matinees four times a year. The dinner-theater events take place at various theaters and restaurants throughout the Shenandoah Valley.

In order to make our concerts enjoyable for everyone, we ask that you please observe the following Festival courtesies:

n Respect your fellow concert-goers. Avoid blocking aisles, stairways or sight lines. If you are using an umbrella, please stay along the fence and take care not to block anyone’s view. Obey all signs in the concert area.

n Canopies and tents are prohibited.

n Unauthorized photography and recording of any kind during the artists’ performances is strictly prohibited. (Members of the media must show proper credentials and abide by the Festival’s and the artists’ rules.)

n Children must be supervised and remain with their parents at all times.

n All animals are prohibited except service dogs, as defined by the ADA.

n Smoking, vaping or the use of any electronic smoking devices is prohibited inside the concert area fence, including the lawn section.

n Lawn seating is divided into three sections: blankets in front, low beach chairs behind the blankets and regular lawn chairs in the back.

n Picnics are welcome on the lawn prior to the concert. Please do not obstruct the view of others with any part of your picnic setup. Pavilion ticket holders who picnic on the lawn should remove their items from the lawn area and stash them under their seats, set them along the fence or take them back to their cars before the concert.

n Cell phones, pagers, watch alarms or any other device that rings, chirps, beeps or makes any other kind of noise should be silenced during the concert.

n Do not congregate on the concrete next to the pavilion. Unless the dance floor is open, please stay close to your seats on the lawn or the pavilion.

Covid-19 Safety Measures

Here is what SVMF is doing to help concertgoers minimize their risk:

n We strongly encourage anyone who is not fully vaccinated to wear a mask at all times while attending a concert. For those fully vaccinated, masks are optional in the pavilion and in all outdoor areas of the concert venue. Masks are recommended inside all buildings on the property. Masks will be available at no charge.

n Please maintain some distance from fellow concert-goers whenever possible, including in lines or when selecting a place on the lawn.

Further measures SVMF is taking to minimize everyone’s risk include:

n Touch-free ticket scanning methods.

n Eliminating food sales. As always, you are encouraged to bring your own picnic dinner to the event or to make a reservation with Shrine Mont at 540-856-2141 to eat dinner in the dining room. Or consider take out or dine-in options at any of our area’s restaurants.

n Cleaning high-touch areas regularly.

n Abiding by whatever restrictions the governor or Virginia Department of Health has in effect at the time of the concert.

Shenandoah Valley Music Festival Presents Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives

With legends like George Jones, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard, who have all passed on, country music purists often echo the question that Jones himself once asked: “Who’s going to fill their shoes?”

The answer, in part, is Marty Stuart. While he’s too gracious to admit it himself, the Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and musician is living and breathing country-music history. He’s played alongside the masters, from Cash to Lester Flatt, who discovered him; been a worldwide ambassador for Nashville, Bakersfield, and points in between; and safeguarded country music’s most valuable traditions and physical artifacts. Meet the Artists

Symphony Pops, family concerts, and a record crowd exceeding 19,000 for Henrico County’s “Red, White, and Lights” Independence Day celebration in 2018. After Lin’s RSO Masterworks in November 2019, Clarke Bustard wrote, “I’ve heard the Brahms Fourth [Symphony] played in concert by half a dozen great orchestras, led by some of the most esteemed conductors of the past three generations. I’ve never heard a more compelling live performance than this one.” (Letter V)

Chia-Hsuan Lin, Associate Conductor

Hailed by the Virginia Gazette as “a rock solid” and “animated” conductor, Chia-Hsuan Lin delights audiences throughout the world with her trademark energy and command. Formerly the assistant conductor of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, she is in her sixth year as associate conductor of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, and she was named the interim music director of the Contemporary Youth Orchestra of Cleveland in 2020.

Highlights of her tenure with RSO include appearances on the Masterworks and Metro Collection subscription series, Handel’s Messiah,

Lin made her Minnesota Orchestra debut in 2020, and has also led the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Virginia Symphony, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Williamsburg Symphony, Richmond Ballet, Peninsula Music Festival Orchestra, Academy of Taiwan Strings, and Taipei Philharmonic Chorus. A former member of the Taipei Percussion Group, Lin’s innovative streak continues with premieres of new works by Chris Thile, Stephen Prutsman and Laura Schwendinger. She has also been a featured guest with Classical Revolution RVA, bringing classical music to unconventional settings.

Lin is a trained percussionist and holds a Doctorate in Orchestral Conducting from Northwestern University.

Curtis Nolley, Choral Director

In his 21st year as director of the Shenandoah Valley Choral Society, Curtis Nolley leads the distinguished ensemble in its 51st season. In

addition to his responsibilities with the SVCS, Curtis serves as church musician and free-lance choral conductor. For forty-three years he served as music educator serving students as choral director and music specialist at every level.

Emily Casey, Soprano

American soprano Emily Casey has been praised for the clarity, range and flexibility of her voice as well as her skillful dramatic and acting abilities. Ms. Casey, reviewed as a "red haired vixen with a sparkling voice" by Opera Canada in a recent performance as Musetta in Puccini's “La Bohème,” has performed many leading roles with companies across the United States, Canada, and Italy. She has been hailed as a “standout” and praised for her “musical lyricism” and has been noted for her talent in embodying both

bearing ballads, America displayed a flawless blend of disparate genres and styles as wide-open as the great American plains.

Enjoying massive success early in their career, America earned their stripes as musical soldiers on the battlefield amidst the excess, craziness and chaos of the 70s. The trio won the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1972 and began working with George Martin and Geoff Emerick in 1974. This successful team went on to record seven albums and several Top 10 hits, including "Tin Man," "Sister Golden Hair" and "Lonely People."

America, the perennial classic rock band comprised of Gerry Beckly and Dewey Bunnell, is continuing to celebrate more than 50 years together with their powerful performances.

Beckley and Bunnell started the band with former band mate, the late Dan Peek, in high school in the late 1960s and quickly harmonized their way to the top of the charts on the strength of their signature song "A Horse With No Name." The song made America a household name and the band continued to pave the way with an impressive string of hits following the success of their first No. 1 single.

America's journey has found them exploring a wide variety of musical terrain. Their best-known tunes "I Need You," "Ventura Highway," "Don't Cross The River," "Tin Man," "Lonely

People," and "Sister Golden Hair" were cornerstones of 1970s FM rock radio. Yet beyond their impressive catalog of hits, listeners would discover there was always much more to America than surface perceptions. The combination of Gerry Beckley's melodic pop rock and Dewey Bunnell's use of folk-jazz elements, slinky Latinleaning rhythms and impressionistic lyric imagery contrasted well with Dan Peek's more traditional country-rock leanings and highly personal lyrics.

Shenandoah Valley Music Festival Presents Village People

recorded by Willis with other professional background singers and released as the debut album “Village People” in 1977. The album quickly climbed to the top of the dance charts and became an international hit.

The original lineup of Village People first appeared with Victor on American Bandstand, and then Casablanca

Village People is one of the most wellknown disco groups in the world. The group’s music is featured in dozens of major motion pictures, on Broadway, in commercials and in “Village People Party” slot machines. Of course, Y.M.C.A, along with its dance, is played at almost every party, wedding, bar mitzvah, and sporting event in the universe.

The Village People began in 1977 when producer Jacques Morali and his partner Henri Belolo, known collectively as Can’t Stop Productions, needed background singers for the recording of a new album for their hit group the Ritchie Family. Horace Ott, the arranger/conductor who was working with them, suggested Victor Willis, a singer he was working with, who was also performing in the Broadway musical The Wiz at the time. Morali was so impressed with Willis, he approached him about another musical project he and Belolo

were planning, which turned out to be Village People.

“I had a dream that you sang lead vocals on an album I produced, and it went very, very big,” Morali told Willis. “I have four tracks. I can’t pay you much right now, but if you agree, I’ll make you a star.” Willis agreed, and the rest is history.

Those initial four tracks, “San Francisco (You’ve Got Me),” “In Hollywood (Everyone’s a Star),” “Fire Island,” and “Village People,” were

Records and Filmworks, the group’s label, got behind their second album “Macho Man” with full promotion and marketing. Village People became an international phenomenon and quickly followed with their third album, the double-platinum “Cruisin,” which featured the blockbuster “Y.M.C.A.” They embarked on a worldwide tour in 1979 to coincide with the release of their fourth album, “Go West.” The group has received many honors and awards, including the American Music Award for Favorite Musical Group and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They also made it on the cover of “Rolling Stone” magazine.

After the release of “Go West,” Willis exited the group, but returned to the helm in 2017 to lead the Village People in a 40th anniversary tour. With hits like “Macho Man,” “Y.M.C.A.,” “In the Navy,” and “Go West,” the group has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and continues to break records. Backed by a live band, they also continue to thrill concert-goers around the world with their live performances.

Shenandoah Valley Music Festival Presents The Spinners

with Atlantic Records in 1972 to team up with producer Thom Bell in Philadelphia, where they blossomed under his masterful productions. The Spinners had another classic hit single, “Working My Way Back To You” topping the Pop and R&B charts, earning the group its 12th gold record. The release of the album “Love Trippin” included “Cupid” one of the fastest-selling records in The Spinners’ career.

Timeless in a way that few other acts are, The Spinners are one of the most iconic and enduring groups in R&B history. With a towering legacy spanning over six decades, The Spinners have never lost their universal appeal.

In 2021, they returned with their first all new original album, aptly titled “Round the Block and Back Again.” The group created and came to define the smooth sound of Philadelphia Soul, channeling the highs and lows of romance and heartbreak into a catalogue of classic hits, beloved across generations.

Throughout the years, The Spinners have continued to top the Pop, R&B, and now Adult Contemporary Charts with smash singles like “I’ll Be Around,” “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love,” “Then Came You,” “The Rubber Band Man,” and many more. The group has earned six Grammy nominations, recorded 18 Platinum and Gold albums, and received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, selling millions of records worldwide in the process.

The Spinners popularized and came to embody the lush sound of Philly Soul in the 1970s. They got their start in Detroit at Motown in 1954, then signed

Béla Fleck – My Bluegrass Heart

featuring Billy Contreras, Jacob Jollif, Justin Moses, Bryan Sutton,and Mark Schatz

over the musical map and on a range of solo projects and collaborations. But his roots are in bluegrass, and that’s where he returns with his first bluegrass tour in 24 years, “My Bluegrass Heart.”

“My Bluegrass Heart” is the third chapter of a trilogy which began with the 1988 album, “Drive,” and continued in 1991 with “The Bluegrass Sessions.” Fleck’s band will spotlight a multi-generational gamut of the best of bluegrass players, all sporting a myriad of Grammy Awards and nominations, as well as gigantic piles of IBMA awards for their instruments: fiddler Billy Contreras, mandolinist Jacob Jolliff, multi-instrumentalist Justin Moses, bassist/multiinstrumentalist Mark Schatz, and guitarist Bryan Sutton.

Billy is incredibly honored to be a part “My Bluegrass Heart” record. He has recorded or performed with Crystal Gayle, George Jones, Lionel Hampton, Doc Severinsen, Marty Stuart, Ray Price, and The Texas Playboys among others. Billy is the fiddler for Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder and teaches at Belmont University as well as performing and recording in Nashville and around the country.

Jacob Jolliff

Over the last four decades, Béla Fleck has made a point of boldly going where no banjo player has gone before, a musical journey that has earned him 15 Grammys in nine different fields, including country, pop, jazz, instrumental, classical, and world music. Just in case you aren’t familiar with Fleck’s music, there are many who say he’s the premiere banjo player in the world. Others claim that Fleck has virtually reinvented the image and the sound of the banjo through a remarkable performing and recording career that has taken him all

Billy Contreras

After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Jacob Jolliff won the National Mandolin Championship. In 2014, he joined the progressive bluegrass group, Yonder Mountain String Band, whom he toured with through 2019. Currently the mandolinist is focusing on his own group, The Jacob Jolliff Band, which includes some of the most virtuosic young acoustic musicians in the world.

“I would play this record for Hank Williams, Merle Haggard or Ernest Hemingway and never bat an eye,” says Stuart. “There’s something in there that would entertain each of them.”

But Stuart also made “Way Out West” for those who come after. As he sees it, there is no greater responsibility in

music than to share what you’ve learned.

“Lester Flatt saw something in me and gave me his wisdom, wit and music. Johnny Cash was my best friend. But all of that doesn’t come for free. The job is to pass it along,” says Stuart, stretching out his arms. “That’s the way it’s supposed to be in country music.”

With “Way Out West,” Stuart holds up his end of the deal.

Nakia Verner, Alto

South Carolina native Nakia Verner is praised for her sumptuous sound and spontaneous passion in recital performances and operatic portrayals which have delighted listeners from San Francisco to Rome. Her notable roles include Mother in “Hansel und Gretel,” “Madama Butterfly,” the First Lady in “Die Zaüberflote,” Magda in “La Rondine,” and the title role of “Suor Angelica.” Verner has also sung the role of Fiordiligi in “Cosi Fan Tutte” and the title role in “Ariadne Auf Naxos.” Nakia has degrees from Winthrop University, The University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and the Peabody Conservatory. Nakia also graduated from The Catholic University of America with a D.M.A. in October 2014.

Nakia has performed both the soprano and alto solo in the “Verdi Requiem,” “Brahms Requiem,” and the alto solo in Bach’s “Magnificat.” She performed

the role of the Countess in “Le Nozze di Figaro,” the title role in “La Voix Humaine,” Dottie in Finian’s “Rainbow,” and Bloody Mary in “South Pacific.” She is the winner of the George Woodhead Prize for Voice, first place winner of both 2010 Washington Summer Opera Theater Scholarship Competition and the 2012 CUA Concerto Competition. Ms. Verner made her debut with Maryland Lyric Opera as Santuzza in “Cavalleria Rusticana” in July 2014. In March 2016 and June 2017, Ms. Verner performed the Brahms’ “Alto Rhapsody” with the Maryland Lyric Opera and the Piedmont Symphony Orchestra. Nakia played the role of Mother in Maryland Lyric Opera’s production of “Amahl and the Night Visitors” in December 2016. Ms. Verner made her debut in the title role in Richard Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos” in Berlin, Germany, in August of 2017.

Joel Ricci, Tenor

Born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, he began his studies with a bachelor’s degree in theater and film at McMaster University and earned a Bachelor of Education at the University of Ottawa. Joel began his vocal studies in 2011 with accomplished soprano Dr. Maria Vetere in the Vetere Studio in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Joel has participated in several masterclasses and six Operavision Academy summer programs where he worked with legendary Bel Canto maestro Richard Bonynge and iconic soprano Aprile Millo in Canada and Italy. He performed in concerts at the Museo Renata Tebaldi, Casa Barezzi, Castello Malaspina di Massa, Teatro Bramante, the Casa di Riposo – Verdi, and the Villa Puccini in Torre del Lago, Italy in a private concert by special invitation from Simonetta Puccini, the granddaughter of famed Italian composer Giacomo Puccini. Joel performed the role of Corrado in “Il Corsaro” with Operavision Academy at the Museo Renata Tebaldi in Busseto, Italy. He has performed many times with Opera Niagara and his recent credits include Rodolfo in “La Boheme,” Elvino in “La Sonnambula,” Nemorino in “L'Elisir D'Amore,” Macduff in “Macbeth,” El Remendado in “Carmen,” and Tinca in “Il Tabarro.” Joel traveled to the historic village of Pienza, Italy, to compete in the prestigious Benvenuto Franci International Opera Competition in 2016. In front of a jury that included Adua Veroni, the wife of Luciano Pavarotti, and a host of musical luminaries, he won second prize. Joel’s current roles are Rodolfo in “La Boheme,” Alfredo in “La Traviata,” Duke of Mantua in “Rigoletto,” Edgardo in “Lucia di Lammermoor,”

Nemorino in “L’Elisir D’Amore,” Federico in “L'Arlesiana,” Des Grieux in “Manon,” Arturo in “I Puritani,” and Elvino in “La Sonnambula.”

Kevin Paton-Cole, Bass

Kevin is a second-year master’s student, who is studying voice performance with world-renowned American baritone William Sharp and organ performance with Dr. Daniel Aune at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. He made his Peabody opera debut in 2018. He is currently the organist at Our Lady of Grace Parish, Parkton, Md., where he also serves as music director.
