he National FFA Organization is an American youth organization known as a Career and Technical Student Organization, based on middle and high school classes that promote and support agricultural education. The organization was founded in 1928 as National FFA Organization, but in 1988 the name was changed to the National FFA Organization, now commonly referred to as simply FFA, to recognize that the organization is for those with diverse interests in the food, fiber and natural resource industries, encompassing science, business and technology in addition to production agriculture. Today FFA is one of the largest youth organizations in the United States. MOTTO Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve. THE FFA CREED I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words but of deeds : achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturists; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us from the struggles of former years.

FFA EMBLEM The cross section of the ear of corn provides the foundation of the emblem, just as corn has historically served as the foundation crop of American agriculture. It is also a symbol of unity, as corn is grown in every state of the nation. The rising sun signifies progress and holds a promise that tomorrow will bring a new day glowing with opportunity. The plow signifies labor and tillage of the soil, the backbone of agriculture and the historic foundation of our country’s strength. The eagle is a national symbol which serves as a reminder of our freedom and ability to explore new horizons for the future of agriculture. The owl, long recognized for its wisdom, symbolizes the knowledge required to be successful in the industry of agriculture. The words “Agricultural Education” and “FFA” are emblazoned in the center to signify the combination of learning and leadership necessary for progressive agriculture.

Along with an established Program of Activities, the ABMS members participate in many Career Development Events (CDE) such as agricultural mechanics, small animal care, plant science, horse, dairy, and livestock judging events. As the year progresses members will attend state sponsored leadership events, federation and school wide programs throughout the year. Each month members attend an FFA meeting with topics such as a family covered dish, team building, fundraising events, bowling, state officer guest speaker and end of year banquet recognition. Each month a student is recognized as student of the month. * * * Students made dog treats and collected donations for Esther Boyd Animal Shelter.

The FFA chapter stationed in Clarke County embodies the FFA motto “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve”. Though little in number, the chapter strives to educate the community about agriculture and serve to better the environment that we live in. We host monthly meetings, filled with fun activities members can participate in. A few activities in the past that we have done include a cornhole tournament, Friendsgiving, and a movie night. At our meetings, we inform members of what events are coming up for our chapter. It also serves as a time to build a bond between members and to get to know one another more. We also go to State Convention every summer which is held in Blacksburg, Virginia. For four

days, FFA members across the state of Virginia compete in all kinds of competitions. We are so proud of the numerous plaques and titles members from our chapter have brought home and the range of events our chapter has competed in over the years. Our current advisors are Mary Hardetsy and Shanan Hambrick who support the officers and members by opening up opportunities while maintaining the ideology that this is a student run organization. This means if we want something to happen, they will give us the resources to be successful, but it is up to us to put in the work. Through them, we continue to come up with brand new ideas to fundraise to help our classroom adventures and to pay for State Convention

so that no member has to. For example, Mrs. Hambrick came up with the amazing idea of making natural soaps for both humans and pets! Members will learn how to make soap and also learn the process of marketing. It’s not only a great investment but a great teaching outlet as well. That’s the main goal of our chapter: to expose our members to things that they never would have if

they hadn’t been a member. FFA is about branching out and experiencing the amazing world around us. Clarke County FFA wants to make sure that our members enjoy the time that they have here and can look back on the experiences and they people they met while being a member. The James Wood Middle School FFA chapter has approximately 50 members. We have had some awesome meetings so far such as a barn building contest, school cleanup, a Christmas party, and a Mock CDE joint meeting with James Wood High School. We have participated in multiple community service projects this year. At Christmas we sponsored a sock tree to collect new socks for the area homeless and we are also in charge of the recycling program at our school. At our most recent meeting we did a barn building contest made out of popsicle sticks! Not only was the contest fun but the ice cream sundaes and pizza were pretty good too! Our next meeting is going to be at the Polka Dot Pot, the members will be making some cool pottery that the students get to take home. We also love participating in contests such as Food & Fiber, Small Animal Care, Plant & Seed, Livestock Evaluation, Stockmans, and Ag Mechanics. We have travelled to the State Fair of Virginia and will be going to Virginia Tech in March for the Block and Bridle Livestock and Stockmans Judging contests. We are super excited for FFA week and getting the opportunity to tell others all about the FFA!

Peter Muhlenberg FFA has had a busy year since State Convention in June. At State Convention, we had 4 teams competing in Small Animal Care, Quiz Bowl, Agriculture Mechanics, and Food and Fiber. All teams brought home blue, red, and yellow ribbons to show their hard work. To top it off, Weston Copp was high individual overall in the FFA Quiz Bowl CDE. 8th Grade members that went to State Convention were also able to attend National FFA Convention in October. Our officer team was elected in the Fall and hit the ground running. The first chapter meeting consisted of 43 members and celebrated the start of the school year with team building games. Since our meeting in September, students have held meetings to help build leadership skills and promote participation in FFA. Meetings included a visit from State FFA officers, working with Central FFA to have a November Harvest Meal, and entering a float in local Ole Time Festival and Christmas parades in Edinburg and Woodstock. Members have also competed in Career Development Events, including Agriculture Mechanics and Food and Fiber. We also have teams preparing for upcoming competitions including Small Animal Care,

Public Speaking, Meats Evaluation, and Poultry. Our upcoming events include FFA week celebrations, a service project, and end of year banquet. FFA week events don’t only benefit our members, but are going to show our appreciation for our Educators through a Faculty Breakfast, and encourage school wide celebration through dress-up days. We will also have a large celebration with all of our county middle school chapters at Peter Muhlenberg where we will have games and a service event that will allow students give back. Our community service project is a continuation of the Giving Garden created from last year’s members. Our 6th Grade members will plan our garden and plant seeds inside while 7th and 8th Grade members will be responsible for planting in the garden. The food we harvest will go to a local food bank. Looking at the end of our school year, we will have a recognition banquet for families and supporters of our FFA members where new members will receive a membership pin, 7th Grade members that meet the requirements will receive their Discovery Degree, 8th Grade members that meet the requirements will receive their Greenhand Degree, and students that compete will be recognized for their work.

In three short years, Agriculture Education & FFA has become a staple program within our Warren County community! The outstanding young leaders who engage in our program share a devotion to agricultural advocacy, leadership and community service, and partnering this with a strong passion for teamwork and setting goals for growth, we are beyond blessed to share with readers some highlights of this year for our chapters! Both Skyline Middle School and Warren County Middle School have experienced tremendous growth in our organizations, much thanks to the phenomenal kids who represent our group! This year, we have traveled to the State Fair of Virginia, visited with our State FFA Officers, and engaged in several exciting chapter activities! We are excited to continue to celebrate a great year as we plan for our Leadership & Career Development Events, conferences, and service activities to come! Our chapter invites you to keep up with our adventures by following our county Facebook page (FFA of Warren County) and help us celebrate the achievements of the blue and gold as we continue to grow our roots in Warren County!
