Winchester Winchester is the oldest city west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and it was founded in 1744 by Colonel James Wood of England. The town was originally named Frederick Town after Frederick, father of George III of England. In 1752, the name was changed to Winchester in honor of the ancient English capital.

The Apparition Trail The Apparition Trail is a walking tour that is approximately 90 minutes long and covers the area of the Old Town Mall and the spooky entrance gate of Mount Hebron Cemetery. Stephens City Stephens City, five miles south of Winchester, is the second oldest town in the Shenandoah Valley. During the late 18th and early 19th century, the town was renowned for its production of wagons.
