Dance instructor helps couples step to the music By Melissa Topey • The Northern Virginia Daily

Lee Santos is helping couples make their first dance together a wedding moment to remember. Santos said a couple usually will come to him with a piece of music already selected for their first dance. It is up to Santos to work with the couple to come up with the choreography and teach them to dance. He can teach just about any style of dance to fit the music.

Lee Santos

“They want to learn how to dance for their first dance together, do a little performance,” Santos said. Sometimes a couple will come to him just a couple of weeks before the wedding, which he said is not really enough time. “Once a week for eight weeks is probably a good number of lessons but the more lessons the better they are going to feel about dancing,” Santos said. Santos, with his wife Peggy, began teaching dance in Minnesota in 1971. Learning how to dance has gained in popularity, especially with dance shows on television in recent years, he said. Santos holds his classes in the dance studio at Valley Health & Fitness at 1195 Hisey Ave. in Woodstock. Pricing varies depending on a number of factors, including the number of classes and whether classes are private or group classes. “It’s their first dance. They should invest in it and they will learn how to dance for a lifetime. They will dance at other events,” Santos said. Contact Santos at 540-335-4800. Often, guests attending an onsite ceremony will then head off to a reception elsewhere, such as the nearby George Washington Hotel, but guests with extra time enjoy sticking around the museum to explore for a while. “We’re a really unique venue with a lot of options and beautiful gardens,” said Bogaty.

Pastor discusses using churches as wedding venues

Rich Cooley/Daily nate Robinson, pastor of emanuel Lutheran Church in Woodstock, stands inside the church sanctuary recently. Robinson claims couples of faith tend to trend to wedding venues outside the sanctuary doors compared to years ago.

WOODSTOCK - One of the important things couples have to deal with when planning a wedding is where they should have their ceremony. According to a 2018 Sound Vision article, 80% of all weddings in the United States are held in churches or synagogues. The question is why are the other 20% not doing ceremonies in churches?

He said that he wouldn’t rule out officiating a wedding with couples of different faiths, but he would need to talk to the couple first. “It would be helpful if I had some relationship with one that attended church and I had a conversation with their fiancee,” he said. “If it were somebody I didn’t know, I would still explore pre-marital counseling, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll officiate the wedding.” Robinson said there is no cost to a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church to hold a wedding ceremony or reception at the church. He said there is a $50 fee for those who use the church for a ceremony. Robinson said the church does accept donations. Contact Donald Lambert at dlambert@nvdaily.com

Describing the experience as a weekend adventure and wedding all in one, Clements said people love that the resort offers everything in one place.

Those looking for a mountain retreat and wedding destination with great views will find that at Massanutten Resort in McGaheysville.

Asked about the biggest perk of a resort wedding, he said, “I have to say it’s probably the convenience of having lodging there at their venue.”

“We do have a beautiful venue here. It’s located at the top of the mountain,” said Matt Clements, wedding and catering specialist.

Massanutten sometimes hosts weddings for people who own timeshares at the resort and use their timeshare week to get married. Other times, he said, people who have visited the resort and loved it return to get married there.

With a veranda for the ceremony, indoor cocktail hour and reception, and hotels “literally walking distance” away, Clements said the resort is an exciting and relaxing all-inclusive weekend getaway for couples and guests. The resort offers areas for the wedding party to get ready, and condos are also available for lodging, he said.

Winter weddings are also available, said Clements, who was preparing for a February wedding recently. Wedding packages start at $3,000. For more information about Massanutten Resort, which is located 1822 Resort Drive, McGaheysville, call 540-289-9441 or visit massresort.com/ groups/weddings

An event center with an onsite chapel, Historic Jordan Springs offers an all-inclusive experience to couples. “People are traveling a lot,” said Executive Director and Senior Event Producer Colt Nutter. “This is one of the biggest trends that we’re seeing now.” Couples he has met are often looking for a location that does it all. Though the event center doesn’t have lodging, Jordan Springs partners with the Hilton Garden Inn in Winchester to shuttle guests to the wedding and back. INTIMATE WEDDINGS WITH SMALLER GUEST LISTS Destination weddings are high in demand as luxury is more attainable than ever. Places like Hawaii, Mexico, and California continue to impress and stun from afar. If you were already dreaming about a honeymoon filled romantic views, why not go all in and bring your wedding to a dream location? Transport yourself into another world. Culture and local cuisine is at your fingertips. Certain customs or traditional ceremonies will feel even more authentic. Daisies Just in case you are planning a traditional wedding, daisies are the perfect flowers for you. They are simple, delicate and are available in various colors. The themes of purity and innocence associated with daisies make them spectacular.

The Northern Virginia Daily • Spring Bridal 2020 • Page 23

Orchids These exquisite flowers are your go-to flowers for nuptials. Their delicateness and unrivaled beauty make them perfect for your wedding. If your eyes are a shade of green, you can carry a full arrangement of green orchids to accentuate your regal look.

Carnations If your wedding theme is vintage, the ruffled texture of carnations will add an excellent touch. If you are going for a monochromatic look and don’t want to break the bank by getting a centerpiece made of only roses, you can add a couple of carnations. The rich mix of pink and green carnations will give a warm touch to your wedding. You will be saving some money and still get the best of both worlds.

A subtle mix of painted leaves and succulents will add life to your bouquet: A little deviation from common practice can make a brilliant addition to your flower bouquet. A couple of gold or silver painted leaves will add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your collection of flowers.

Tulips A delicate arrangement of long stemmed tulips can make the whole difference in your wedding ensemble. They are not too big or small, they are perfect. Red, purple, yellow or white tulips have striking color patterns and they are enchanting in their simplicity.

Calla lilies The beauty of calla lilies cannot be overemphasized. Just a handful will make an exquisite bouquet on your wedding day. They are associated with good luck charm for a happy home. So, you might want to grab a couple of calla lilies just before you say your vows. They come in different colors ranging from white, yellow, red, pink, purple and black.

GROOM'S STYLE Trends 2020 By SHirin MeHdi

1. PICK a PLaYFuL tIe It’s a big day! While it is all formal and solemn, it is also fun and exciting and this 2020 trend perfectly reflects that emotion. You can pick any color you like and then let loose with the choice of patterns – dots, flowers, stripes, checks – or a combination of them all, and you are all set to take the center stage.

If you thought that planning a wedding mainly entails a quest for that perfect white dress, you might be wrong. It takes the yang to complete the yin and therefore the union of man and wife requires the groom’s outfit to be just as perfect as that pristine gown. traditionally, the groom always opts for a dapper black tux, but today there are more than a few options available for men to get fancy at their wedding. With the onset of a new year and a new decade the style quotient only gets higher. Let’s take a look at how men can be trendy grooms in 2020.

2. WoRK WItH ContRaStInG vESTS It’s a big day! While it is all formal and solemn, it is also fun and exciting and this 2020 trend perfectly reflects that emotion. You can pick any color you like and then let loose with the choice of patterns – dots, flowers, stripes, checks – or a combination of them all, and you are all set to take the center stage.

Let us put a little whimsy in your SPECIAL day!

3. Amp up the luxe factor with velvet Velvet was cool in the ’80s and it is cool today! If you are not comfortable with wearing a velvet blazer, wear a velvet bowtie instead – but you must give your wedding attire a sprinkle of velvet. It is a little “extra”, but then it’s your wedding.

4. Pick jewel tones Want to break from traditions? To add a little twist and a modern edge to your wedding day add some color to your wardrobe. A rich burgundy, a deep maroon, or an emerald green are great colors to pick – this will definitely add to the pomp of your wedding and make you feel extra special.

5. Stay grounded with Navy If you are a traditionalist and want to stick with the classics, you needn’t be disappointed with this list. Navy is the color of the year for a groom’s tuxedo. You can never go wrong with a crisp blue suit.

Tablescapes Captivating

It’s going to be a dazzling decade!

And your one-of-a-kind love story deserves its own unforgettable moment at your wedding reception. What’s trending in 2020 tablescapes? The “Wow” factor. A mixture of bold, modern, and simplistic style. Whether a sweetheart table just for the couple, head table for the entire wedding party, or the guest tables — it’s all about telling a story, creating a mood, letting your personal taste shine through. Simplistically Bold

Couples are choosing to infuse their own creative touch and whimsy to every aspect of their wedding. And creating a truly unique and dazzling tablescape can easily be achieved on a budget. A bold pop of color can be stunning when set against a neutral background. Inexpensive, yet rich in drama: Pare a white table and place settings with bright red zinnias, roses, or hibiscus. The singular red splash of color, although simplistic in style, conveys a modern elegance.

Festive Flare

Mix and match orange and pink napkins and vibrant flowers to create a festive yet uncomplicated tablescape. Colors can create the mood you want for your reception— upbeat, happy and ready for fun. Perfect for an outdoor summer wedding! To add an artfully contrived flare to the tables, push multiple tables together to create a “snake” shape or curve. Or, arrange them into an “X” or the first letter of your last name. Forget the “rules”—this is your day to let your imagination run wild; let your friends see your style and voice shine through. It’s time to let your inner artist and architect out of the box and guide you in designing the wedding reception of your dreams!

Breaking all the Rules

The only rule you need to abide by is to be true to your personal style. Integrate your forward-thinking approach to life by mixing dark colors and a bold pattern. Add an overhead installment of white lights or hang string lights vertically behind the head table for added drama. Adding delicate flowers in clear glass vases provides a visually softening effect.

By JULie MaddOCK

a tapas bar is a culinary mini moment! vivid and colorful in presentation, offering a little something for everyone, this is a delicious and budget-friendly way to break bread with your wedding guests. it’s all about the presentation, flare and flavor. Whether it’s cocktail-hour hors d’oeuvres or an innovative alternative to a formal, sit down meal, tapas-style food bars offer your guests delectable treats and numerous small plate options to feast their eyes and taste buds on. Tapa bars lend themselves to relaxed conversation, a chilled-out atmosphere and the ability for guests to mingle about freely. Embrace a Venetian theme with a cicchetti bar. These bite-size delights are easy to eat while standing and moving about conversing with guests. Have an array of offerings: Six to eight pieces make a meal. But don’t be surprised if your guests sample more of these irresistible treats — crostini topped with gorgonzola, sliced pears, and walnuts, polpette (fried meatballs), slices of roast beef with salsa verde, fig and ricotta, or crispy calamari with lime and chili salsa. Break tradition and say hasta la vista to cracker-andcheese plates and surprise your guests with a festive Mexican themed guacamole bar. Provide crisp, sturdy tortillas for dipping and scooping multiple versions of guacamole — creamy, chunky, or even spicy charred pineapple guac. Additional Mexican dip options such as chili queso, chipotle street corn dip with goat cheese, and hearty warm shredded chicken or beef nacho dip will keep this bar hopping.
