Holocaust Violin Donated
A violin which was played in a concentration camp during the Holocaust was donated to King David High School at its winter concert. The instrument was owned by Siegmund Feitl, who was born in Vienna in 1876. When the Nazis occupied Austria during the Second World War, Siegmund, who performed in nightclubs throughout Vienna, was sent to Theresienstadt, in the present-day Czech Republic. The violin eventually passed to his daughter, Margaret Gibson, who died 10 years ago. Margaret’s husband, Peter, donated the violin to King David School after meeting head teacher Tracy Basger on a cruise. The donation took place at the winter concert where Dr Andrew Walker played the Schindler’s List theme on the violin.
Exhibition Enlightens
Hundreds of schoolchildren and members of the public learned about the Jewish way of life at the Jewish Living Experience Exhibition, hosted at Eccles Library, Salford. Local faith leaders, councillors, and Salford Ceremonial Mayor, Heather Fletcher, were among those who attended the launch. The event was organised by Board of Deputies’ Communities and Engagement Manager Sara Radivan and Education Officer, Anna Silver, who delivered an inset training for local teacher on how to teach Judaism effectively. Also attending were Board VicePresident Jeremy Michelson, and deputies Sheila Gewolb, Gillian Moonman, and Owen Power. Jeremy said: “In these days of rising antisemitism and social media disinformation, it is important that everyone learns about Jewish life, practice and what it is to be a Jewish person in modern Britain.”

Rabbi Daniel Walker of Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation recently joined a Chanukah celebration led by Michelle Ciffer at the Hershel Weiss Centre. In the wake of the horrific terrorist attacks in Bondi and at Heaton Park, the gathering celebrated Chanukah – united, resilient, and proud.
Chief Constable At CST Lunch
The Jewish Representative Council (JRC) attended the Community Security Trust (CST) lunch, an emotional occasion as they marked the terrorist attack on Yom Kippur and the appalling atrocity that took place in Sydney. These appalling acts underline the ongoing threats faced by the Jewish community and highlight the critical importance of the work carried out by the CST. Its role in safeguarding the Jewish way of life, monitoring antisemitism, and working in close partnership with the police and authorities is more important than ever. The JRC also expressed sincere thanks to Greater Manchester Police whose Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson spoke powerfully for their continued dedication to the safety of the Jewish community.
Police Step Up Visible Patrols
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has put out a statement to say it will be more assertive in the way they deal with antisemitic protests across the city. In a joint statement issued by the Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley and the Chief Constable of GMP, Sir Stephen Watson, they emphasised that visible patrols and protective measures around synagogues, schools, and community venues have been stepped up around Manchester. Part of the statement said: “These measures are practical and immediate – designed to keep communities safe, deter intimidation, and enforce the law. Our intent is clear: create a hostile environment for offenders and a safer environment for Jewish communities, while protecting lawful protest. We want you to hear this clearly: we see you, we hear you, and we stand with you. Your safety and wellbeing matter to all of us. Please keep talking to us and to each other; report incidents promptly; and make use of our dedicated neighbourhood teams.”
MJM Hosts Manchester Genealogy
On 18th January from 12pm to 4pm, Manchester Genealogy will be hosting a help desk at Manchester Jewish Musuem (MJM). The organisation will have access to online resources that may help with your research into your family history. The team will be happy to answer questions or discuss your research, completely free of charge!

Raphi Bloom – Director of Fundraising, Marketing, and Communications at The Fed – recently spoke at a House of Lords event, delivering a powerful update on the organisation’s vital community support work across Greater Manchester. He highlighted the complex social care being provided to victims of the Heaton Park Synagogue terrorist attack, noting that The Fed remains the only Jewish organisation in Manchester equipped to deliver such specialised support. He said: “Supporting The Fed is one of the most powerful ways we honour our past and secure our future. It’s how we say: ‘I may live elsewhere, but I haven’t forgotten who I am or where I come from. Once a Manc, always a Manc’.” The Fed welcomed 110 Mancunian expats and others with Manchester connections to the House of Lords for an awareness event hosted by Lord Stuart Marks of Hale CBE.

IN THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
Camp Simcha held a Chanukah celebration to provide an afternoon of fun and respite for its families.
PHOTO: TANYA DUMAN PHOTOGRAPHY
A Chanukah celebration brought families together for an afternoon of fun and community hosted by Camp Simcha, the Jewish community’s charity for seriously ill children and their families. Stepping into a mini carnival at Holy Law Synagogue in Prestwich, more than 115 family
members and 30 volunteers were greeted with a ‘festival within a festival’. Kids jumped between inflatables and a bouncy castle, while the arts and crafts corner became the go-to spot for budding artists to craft handmade Chanukah keepsakes. Nearby, the photo booth captured fun poses, a caricaturist roamed the room capturing guests and turning them into works of art, and a balloon modeller kept the children entertained with their menagerie of animals, swords, and flowers. And for the first time therapy dogs from Pets as Therapy joined the fun, greeting children with wagging tails and instantly putting smiles on faces. Of course, no Chanukah party would be complete without something to eat and this year a pasta bar was on the menu with families choosing their own pasta, sauce, and toppings – and for dessert, the doughnut station was a massive hit, serving everything from the traditional jam-filled to drizzled chocolate and iced rings. One less thing for the families
to worry about when they got home. Goldie Benedikt, Camp Simcha’s Manchester Services Coordinator, said: “For families navigating daily medical challenges, the Chanukah party offers much-needed respite; a chance to relax and catch up with other Camp Simcha parents over a hot drink and a doughnut, or two! All in the knowledge that their little ones are having the best time and being well-loved by our volunteers – in equal measures.”

A TOUCHING TRIBUTE
A new memorial has been unveiled at Hillock shul’s Garden of Remembrance. A new granite memorial honouring Lieutenant Colonel Geoffry Rothband, a former commanding officer of The Lancashire Fusiliers, has been unveiled in the Garden of Remembrance at Hillock Hebrew Congregation. Col. Rothband, a proud lifelong Mancunian, died in 2023 at the age of 103. Commissioned into his regiment in 1938, he followed his father into service, saw action in East Africa, and later served as a Chindit in Burma. He remained in the reserves until 1962, eventually commanding his battalion and receiving the Territorial Decoration for his service. His son Nigel Rothband travelled from London to unveil the memorial, joined by his son Harry and family: “We applaud the Hillock initiative in dedicating a space to remember those who have served this country across generations, in war and in peace,” he said. The Garden of Remembrance and Commemoration was officially opened by His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant, Diane Hawkins, following a special Remembrance Shabbat

service. Alongside the new memorial are metal poppies honouring community members, and a second granite stone donated by AJEX, commemorating the officers and men of the Zion Mule Corps and the Jewish Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers. Shul President, Ron Vosk, said: “We are grateful to The Rothband family, AJEX, and others who have donated memorials in memory of loved ones or to mark their own service to our country. The garden is for the
whole community and anybody wishing to commemorate a friend or family member’s service can get more information by emailing us.” hillock.shul@ntlworld.com

COMMUNITY CHAT
Two friends explore the peculiarities of British Jewish life in their authentic, uplifting podcast, Nisht for Me. When Manchester’s Arron Ferster and Abigail Radnor launched their podcast celebrating British Jewish life, they expected their friends and family to listen – at least for a while. What they didn't anticipate was feedback from Jewish and non-Jewish listeners both in the UK and America, and a growing community of fans who've discovered what the longtime friends felt to be true: there's something special and necessary about sharing Jewish joy. "We're shocked really," laughs the duo, who've been friends for over 30 years. "The feedback has been really lovely and from surprising places. Someone on a ranch in Texas keeps commenting on our YouTube videos, saying it feels local to them even though they're all the way over there." The podcast emerged from the dark days following October 7th, when the pair found their conversations becoming increasingly depressing: "Everything we talked about was centred around what we're reading and what was frustrating and upsetting us," Arron explains. "It was taking its toll, as it did on so many."
10
In response, they decided to create something that puts Jewish joy out there, and so Nisht for Me was born: "We don't pretend that October 7th never happened, and we don't pretend that antisemitism doesn't exist," Abigail clarifies. "It's just that we don't dwell on it. There are so many other content providers that do great analysis and reporting. That's not what this is here to do." Both Abigail and Arron were members of the Habonim Dror Jewish youth movement, both have married Mancunians, and have children the same age, keeping them socially close. The pair's long friendship provides the authentic dynamic that listeners respond to. But what makes Nisht for Me resonate so widely is its ability to blend hyper-local Jewish references with universal themes: "A lot of the stuff we get under the bonnet of is really about relationships, family, and friendships," Abigail says. “The episode on sitting Shiva, while uniquely Jewish in practice, explores the broader theme of friendship during tough times. It's about universal themes with a Jewish hue and works across the board.” "Lots of people say that the wedding episode is a particular favourite," says Arron. "After we finished recording, we were like, 'Oh God, I'd love to go to a good simcha!' You remember all the good stuff. Jews are great at celebrating." Arron is a writer and producer, a former Manchester Grammar School pupil who read History at Oxford, and now works on television series including Never Mind the Buzzcocks, QI,
and Keith Lemon’s Through the Keyhole. Withington Girls’ alumni Abigail, who read English Literature and American Studies at the University of Birmingham, has worked for various fashion magazines and is now lifestyle editor for The Guardian’s Saturday magazine. The hosts bring professional creative backgrounds to the project but they've deliberately kept the production relaxed: "We have a loose script for each podcast, just so we have some sort of structure, but we're not tied to it," Arron explains. "We'll often have an idea, and then we'll literally just jot down a few points. That becomes the podcast." This casual approach is also present in their social media: "We joke about the fact that we're like two Yiddish grandmas trying to work out social media," Abigail laughs. "There’s a lot of panicky messages back and forth just going, 'I don't know how to do this!'" Having wrapped their first series of 10 shows, they're already working on series two. They're also looking to expand their guest roster, having already hosted Abigail's fellow Guardian Journalist, Jonathan Freedland. As they look ahead to the future of the podcast, the two aren’t worried about running short of inspiration and material. They’re keen to keep talking and discovering new areas to explore: "Hope and joy – it's been hard to come by, but it's what keeps people ticking," Arron reflects. In creating Nisht for Me, he and Abigail have tapped into something communities everywhere needed: a reminder that celebrating Jewish life, with all its quirks and joys, is itself an act of resilience. NATIONAL DRINK WINE DAY
Wine O ’ Clock For National Drink Wine Day (18th February), kosher wine expert Gabriel Geller of Kedem Wines shares his top picks for the best wines to gift. National Drink Wine Day is just around the corner, and the long winter evenings are great occasions for spending quality time with one’s spouse, friends, or family around some good bottles of wine. Here’s a curated selection to delight the wine lovers on your gift list.
1848 Winery | Orient, 2022
‘Orient’ is a Mediterranean blend named in reference to the Middle East. It’s a food-friendly, medium-bodied red with juicy notes of blackberry, cherry, clove, and nutmeg. Its lively acidity and soft tannins make it a great match for grilled veal chops or dark meat chicken.
Terra di Seta | Guiduccio, Toscana IGT, 2020
This flagship wine from the celebrated estate in the heart of Tuscany is a blend of Sangiovese, merlot, and cabernet sauvignon. It marries the vibrant character of Italian wines with the elegance and polished power of Bordeaux. Expect concentrated notes of red and black forest berries that are accented by hints of fine balsamic and black truffle. It’s an iron fist in a velvet glove – rich and expressive now, with the potential to evolve beautifully over the next decade if cellared properly.
Shiloh | Secret reserve, 2023
While I like serving or gifting lesser-known wines, sometimes you need a bottle with strong brand recognitions – something that’s on every store shelf and restaurant list. Shiloh’s secret reserve cabernet sauvignon fits the bill perfectly, consistently delivering style and quality. This full-bodied cabernet is rich and layered, with ripe notes of blackberry, black cherry, toasted oak, black liquorice, and espresso. Chewy tannins and a plush, lingering finish make it a wine that practically demands a hearty meat pairing.
Herzog | Special reserve Russian River, 2023
Like the Shiloh, Herzog’s Russian River chardonnay is a well-known and widely appreciated white wine. It’s a classic California barrel-aged chardonnay, offering creamy textures and aromas of lemon, tart apple, vanilla bourbon, and a touch of nuttiness. Generous and concentrated, it pairs beautifully with veal roast, baked salmon, or ahi tuna steak.
Château Gazin Rocquencourt | Blanc, Pessac-Léognan, 2023
One of the finest white wines available, this Bordeaux Blanc is robust yet refined. It’s less opulent than the Herzog, with high acidity that balances the creaminess from malolactic fermentation and oak aging. Expect intense notes of citrus, white peach, and tart pear, complemented by subtle hints of fresh almond and earthy minerality. It’s an excellent match for tartare – either salmon, tuna, or beef – or even a plate of crispy latkes. Kedemeurope.com

CATCHING UP
A lot has been been happening at The Fed and Heathlands Village in the last couple of months.
At the end of October, The Fed’s Indian colleagues proudly hosted a celebration of Indian culture, offering a vibrant glimpse into the traditions of India, with a special spotlight on the festivals of Onam and Diwali. Dressed in colourful traditional attire, colleagues captivated the audience with a series of dances that showcased the rich diversity of India’s regional cultures. The festivities continued with two charming performances by their children, culminating in a heartfelt rendition of the Indian national anthem. The team thanks everyone who generously donated to its Big Birthday Appeal – Lights and Love Holiday Toy Drive as over 500 toys were donated! Your kindness is bringing joy to hundreds of Jewish children The Fed supports
across Greater Manchester including those who are part of its Smile Children’s Group as well as to young patients who spent Christmas at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and Royal Bolton Hospital. A group of Year 13 students at King David High School have proudly become Fed My Voice guardians, dedicating themselves to preserving and sharing the stories of Holocaust survivors through the My Voice Project. In December, the school welcomed three remarkable survivors – Marianne Philipps, Gerda Rothberg, and Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines MBE. They were deeply moved by the respectful, well-prepared Year 13 guardians, who had read each survivor’s life story and came ready with thoughtful, heartfelt questions.
IN THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
The My Voice Project was also proud to participate in an inspiring 80 Candles for 80 Years event, jointly hosted by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust and Novus. Guests, partners, stakeholders, and politicians were deeply moved as My Voice Survivor Storyteller Anne Super shared her powerful and emotional story – surviving as a hidden child during the Holocaust and later rebuilding her life to create a loving family and a successful career. Raphi Bloom, Director of the My Voice Project, spoke about the project’s history, the impact of its collection of over 60 published survivor books, and the exciting plans for its future. Andy Gerschler, Head of History and Politics at Wellington School, explained how the school used the My Voice Guardian Programme with three sixth-form students to create their exhibit for the 80 Candles exhibition, featuring Anne Super’s life story. And finally, Heathlands Village and the community have been celebrating Chanukah in style with joy and togetherness. From lively children’s parties to the residents’ choir concert, the celebrations culminated in two community events in North and South Manchester. Hundreds joined to light candles, share festive treats, and dance the afternoon away.
QUIZ TIME
Jewish Action for Mental Health recently held its first quiz night and Neurokinetics Club held its second! The very first Jewish Action for Mental Health (JAMH) quiz night was a huge success, with more than 80 people coming together in December at Manchester Maccabi for an evening of fun, laughter, and community spirit. Guests enjoyed a lively mix of quiz questions and games, hosted by quizmaster double act Steven Pearlman and Jonny Wineberg, whose entertaining banter kept spirits high throughout the night. The event, held in the run-up to Chanukah, was designed to give the community a chance to connect and enjoy some much-needed light-hearted fun at a time when togetherness is especially important. Teams of eight to 10 were warmly welcomed and joined up with others on the night. The winning team was Malcom and Hilary Granat, Clive and Suzy Brown, Kenneth and Sarah Jason, Michael and Laura Greenberg, Alan and Rebecca Goodman, and Abigail Caplan. The event was generously supported by prize donations, for which JAMH expressed its sincere gratitude.

JAMH Trustee, Jonny Wineberg, said: “We were delighted that the community came out in such force to support us and that we were able to put on an enjoyable event to raise their spirits. We will definitely be making this an annual event! Huge thanks to Steve Pearlman for being my co-quizmaster, Manchester Maccabi for hosting us and being so helpful, our staff and volunteers for their invaluable support, and to all the participants.” Funds raised will go towards providing continued mental health treatment across the whole of the Greater Manchester Jewish community. Prestwich-based Neurokinetics Club (NKC) held its second annual quiz night in November and it was even bigger and better than last year’s bumper event. More than 200 keen quizzers packed into the Stenecourt Synagogue hall for a fun night of questions, cakes, and camaraderie to raise vital funds to support the ongoing work of the charity. This year’s quiz was devised and set by Mark Samberg, a long-time NKC member, and
helping him on the night was quizmaster Tony Conway. The event was opened with a welcome from fundraiser Zena Field and there was a brief introduction to the club’s work from the charity’s Chief Executive, Andrew Saipe. NKC holds twice-weekly exercise classes at Manchester Maccabi, specially designed for men and women suffering with a variety of neurological conditions including Parkinson’s, MS, stroke, and dementia. The classes, held between 12 and 1pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, offer a lively environment for members of all abilities while carers and spouses can enjoy a supportive get together and chat at the coffee group held at the same time. MEET TOM LEE SALES MANAGER THORNLEY GROVES PRESTWICH
Prestwich Property Market – 2025 in Review As 2025 draws to a close, Prestwich continues to shine as one of Greater Manchester’s most desirable places to live and invest. This year’s property market has been shaped by steady price growth, strong rental demand, and increasing interest from buyers seeking a blend of community, connectivity, and green space. Average property prices in Prestwich saw consistent growth throughout the year, with family homes close to Heaton Park and around the village centre performing particularly well. “Hot streets” such as St Ann’s Road, Gardner Road, and parts of Bury New Road continued to attract strong competition, with some properties generating more than 20 viewings and multiple offers for vendors. As a result, many homes sold quickly, often being on the market for only a few days. First-time buyers remained especially active in areas like Sedgley Park, where well-proportioned terraces offered great value. Rental demand grew significantly in 2025, driven by young professionals seeking strong transport links and vibrant local amenities. We also registered 105% more applicants than in 2024, highlighting the sharp rise in competition for quality rental homes. Two-bed flats and threebed houses saw the fastest turnaround times, with rental yields proving strongest in the village core of the market. This consistent demand has reinforced Prestwich’s reputation as a reliable investment location. It’s also been a milestone year for us. Throughout 2025, we delivered a 17% year-on-year uplift in sales and achieved record performance across both sales and lettings, helping families move, investors grow their portfolios, and tenants find homes they love. Our local expertise and hands-on property management service continue to set us apart in an increasingly competitive market. Looking ahead to 2026, we expect growth to continue and centre around the village core, with the emerging café-culture streets branching off Bury New Road. For buyers and investors, opportunities remain strong where value and long-term potential still align. For landlords, rental yields should continue to perform well in the Sedgley and Heaton Park areas. With another exciting year ahead, Prestwich remains a fantastic place to buy, sell, let, or invest - and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

FASHION FOR ALL
The Friendship Circle recently held an inclusive fashion show. The Friendship Circle hosted its powerful ‘SEE ME. OWN IT. Diversity on the Runway’ fashion show, where members modelled side-by-side with their volunteer buddies, celebrating the belief that fashion belongs to everyone. Across two evenings, more than 400 guests packed the Hilton Suite. Clothing sponsors N. Brown and Chums generously provided the outfits worn on the runway. Other sponsors included Manchester Drinks, Online Home Shop, Swizzels, The Pilot Group, and Quest – which also supplied everyone with a goody bag. The show opened with an energetic performance by the Friendship Circle drummers. This was followed by an inspiring address by Hannah Cohen, who shared her journey through personal loss, visual impairment, and ultimately, empowerment, captivating the audience with her resilience. Guests were also treated to a contemporary dance by Avi Pash and a heartfelt rendition of ‘That’s What Friends Are For’ sung by Elliot Sayers, with the audience joining in for the chorus. Throughout both evenings, Friendship Circle member Hannah Mendell served as a charismatic MC guiding the audience through a programme filled with emotion and celebration. The atmosphere was electric as the community came together to celebrate individuality and inclusion. The event raised an incredible £55,000, directly supporting The Friendship Circle’s mission to build an inclusive community, one friend at a time.

COMING TOGETHER
The Muslim Jewish Forum of Greater Manchester (MJF) recently held its annual Loose Lawyers event. In November, MJF held its Loose Lawyers event, where two Jewish and two Muslim lawyers are given one topic to discuss. This year’s topic was: ‘Where there is a will there is a way – implementing Muslim and Jewish inheritance rules under English law.’ The panel consisted of David Berkley KC, Barrister of 3PB Chambers; Erimnaz Mushtaq, Barrister of Doughty Street Chambers; Jeremy Dable, Barrister of Normanton Chambers; and Adil Navaid, Barrister of St John’s Buildings. The lawyers explained that in Islam, several verses of the Quran set out a mandatory division of two-thirds of a deceased person’s estate between his or her relatives in specified proportions. The other third can be left as the deceased wishes, provided he or she makes a will. Making a will is regarded as a duty within Islam. However, to be legally effective, any will must comply with the requirements of English law. In particular when preparing the will, any dependant’s possible claim under
20
the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 needs to be taken into account. The lawyers also explained that in Judaism, inheritance is strictly only to sons, not daughters. However, over the years, rabbis have developed methods which enable people to leave inheritances to daughters (as well as sons) without violating Jewish religious teachings. The panel’s short presentations were followed by a Q&A session, with many intriguing questions being posed by the audience. Forum Executive Committee member Anne Isaac closed the proceedings by giving the vote of thanks. After that, the participants
and speakers were able to chat over drinks and delicious kosher cream cakes from Brackmans Bakery. Dr Fiona Maynard said: “As ever, this Loose Lawyers event was both stimulating and informative. It was fascinating to hear how both religions implement inheritance law in the 21st century.” Séamus Martin said: “It’s a fascinating topic – how Muslims and Jews can shoehorn their faith-based legacy requirements into the legal framework of a society that has an ethos often at odds, if not actively hostile, to the values and religious legal codes of people of faith.”

NMB Kitchens and Bathrooms offers the full package – from design through to full installation.
22
We've all heard the horror stories about kitchen renovations – projects that drag on for months, quotes that mysteriously inflate mid-job, or contractors who vanish for weeks at a time. NMB Kitchens & Bathrooms was founded to offer something different – a family business where communication, transparency, and expert craftsmanship come as standard. Nevin started NMB in 2008 after spending over 20 years in the building trade and kitchen industry. Having worked in management roles for large nationwide companies, he'd seen how the focus had shifted from customer satisfaction to hitting sales targets. That never sat right with him, so he set up his own business with a simple philosophy: treat every client's home as if it were your own, communicate clearly, and deliver on every promise. Based in Prestwich, NMB works predominantly across North and South Manchester, covering areas including Whitefield, Chorlton, Didsbury, Altrincham, and beyond. Unlike many kitchen companies, NMB handles everything from initial consultation through to final installation and all the building work that goes with it. Need a wall knocked through to create an open-plan space? Want to reconfigure a bathroom layout? That's all part of the service. Because Nevin's background is in building, the team can coordinate structural alterations, liaise with engineers and building control, and manage every trade from plastering to electrics to plumbing. This full-service approach means you're dealing with one company and one point of contact throughout the entire project. No juggling multiple contractors and no confusion about who's responsible for what. Nevin handles every client visit personally, from that first consultation right through to completion. There's no sales team and no being passed from person to person – just direct, honest communication. One thing clients particularly appreciate is NMB's approach to quotes. Every quote
is broken down into detailed sections – plumbing, electrics, flooring, building work – with each item clearly priced. If you've been quoted for 15 spotlights at £45 each and later decide you only need 10, you can see exactly how much you'll save. It's total transparency, which builds trust and gives clients confidence in what they're paying for. When it comes to design, NMB isn't tied to a single supplier. The business offers fully bespoke kitchens manufactured by its own cabinet maker, with options ranging from classic shaker styles to contemporary micro shakers (with a sleek 30mm frame) and handleless designs. They work in solid oak, solid walnut, and offer fluted door options too. Whether you're after something traditional that works in a period property or ultramodern for a new build, there's the flexibility to create exactly what you're looking for. The family element runs deep. Kirsty, Nevin's partner, joined the business in 2023, bringing her background in auditing and business management to keep everything running smoothly. Their youngest son is currently working through his apprenticeship, learning the trade hands-on while their other son is gaining broader building experience with another company. It's a genuine family operation where everyone's invested in delivering quality work. With consistently positive reviews, NMB has built its reputation on repeat business and personal recommendations. Many clients have returned two or three times over the years – first for a kitchen, then a bathroom, then another kitchen in a new home. That's the kind of loyalty that comes from treating people right. If you're looking for a straightforward, honest approach to your next kitchen or bathroom project – where someone actually picks up the phone, turns up when they say they will, and delivers what they've promised – NMB Kitchens & Bathrooms should be your first port of call. Start-Up to Standout From components to full kitchens, bedrooms and media rooms, Furniture Components UK is proudly celebrating an inspiring 20-year journey and looks forward to many more.
In February 2005, Managing Director of Furniture Components UK (FCUK), Steve Johnson, made the decision to start his own business and launched in Waterfoot. The story began as many businesses unfold, with the idea of one individual deciding to strike out alone with their own enterprise. Steve reflects on the past two incredible decades – from a home-grown venture to a two tier facility complex with an impressive showroom, offices, warehouse, and distribution centre sitting on Rawtenstall’s Gateway Business Park: “From the proverbial ‘blank sheet’ working from my home, we opened our first premises in 2006 and now as we’re in our 20th year, I look back in wonder to where the time has gone.” What a journey it’s been! With decades of experience under his belt, Steve has been working at all levels of the industry since the 1970s and was delighted to create his very own family business: “Starting the business was something I wanted to do primarily to give my two boys an opportunity to grasp for their future. Both were at or around school leaving age and neither wanted to embark into further education so, as any parent would, I started to put my ideas and thoughts into a plan.” From humble beginnings, Steve acquired FCUK’s very first van in 2005, its first premises in 2006, and a second one followed in the same town in 2009. The customer base grew quickly as it established itself as the business to visit in the valley. With a rapidly rising reputation for great products and service, the company found itself outgrowing the original units and began to look for a new home. In 2018, Steve and the team made the leap to a purpose-built showroom in Rawtenstall conveniently located right by the A56 where they moved their entire trading operation just a year later. By 2022, the business expanded once again,
26
with a second purpose-built unit alongside its trade centre. Within 20 years, Steve has led unprecedented success with a floor space which is five times larger than the original Waterfoot units. Today sees the business offering an impressive product portfolio, enjoying success in kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, audio visual, and much more! Several of its projects have been featured on specialist TV shows throughout the years such as George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces. As Steve explains: “We still provide anything from components right the way through to a complete project. Each day, we welcome customers into our superb trade centre facility where you can speak to real people – yes, real people! “Our experienced team includes six design specialists with over 100 years of design and specification experience within this field. They’re all knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and really care about your needs and projects.” Steve would like to personally thank all of the company’s customers for placing their faith in FCUK over the years, with many coming back again and again with their new projects. He also looks forward to meeting many new clients from the Jewish community through JLife magazine. Just like the community, family is at the core for Steve: “As for my two young boys, they now have families of their own and are now also directors. All our achievements so far serve as the foundation to our continued progress and improvement towards excellence as a whole team. We’re committed to providing our customers with the best products at the best prices.” Here’s to the next 20 years! Furniture-components.co.uk 0170 622 0763

Health & Wellbeing The UK is experiencing a sleep deprivation crisis, with an estimated 18.5 million adults sleeping fewer than six hours a night. In winter – with its shorter and darker days – many adults face even greater challenges in getting restorative sleep. Getting a good night’s sleep is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to improve your overall health and wellbeing but for many, it doesn’t come easily. Between busy schedules, constant screen time, and daily stress, quality rest can feel out of reach. The good news is that better sleep isn’t just about luck; it’s about building the right habits and environment to support your body’s natural rhythm. A recent survey commissioned by Kalms Herbal Remedies revealed the extent of the nation’s sleep epidemic. 54% of UK adults surveyed struggle to drift off at night, with 46% operating on alarmingly low levels of sleep. The primary culprits? Difficulty falling asleep (52%) and frequent night-time awakenings (54%). While darker evenings may encourage some to head to bed earlier, the sudden adjustment in time from the clocks changing can throw body clocks off balance, making it harder to fall asleep at night and wake up feeling refreshed in the morning. Circadian rhythm, our body’s internal 24hour clock, plays a crucial role in regulating sleep. The transition out of daylight saving time combined with the challenges of the winter season can disturb the sleepwake cycle, leading to social jet lag and contributing to an accumulation of sleep debt. This disruption doesn’t just impact energy levels – it can also affect overall wellbeing and productivity. Dr Nerina Ramlakhan is a Physiologist and Sleep Therapist who obtained her BSc and PhD from King's College London. Commenting on the importance of getting a good night’s sleep, she says: “Sleep is fundamental for our physical and mental health, enhancing all aspects of the mind, body, and soul. When we achieve consistent, good quality sleep, we have the physical and mental ability to deal with the burden of uncertain times. “Creating a sleep-care routine that aligns with your lifestyle and makes you feel relaxed gives you the best chance of achieving a deep and restorative night’s sleep and waking up feeling reenergised. This differs from person to person, but the concept remains the same; develop reliable practices that help you to unwind from the stressors of daily life and prioritise sleep.” To help navigate the seasonal shift, Dr Nerina shares five essential pillars for achieving deeper, more restorative sleep…
are tricks we can do to stop the body waking into full consciousness. When this happens, avoid checking the time on your phone or any electronic device and try this simple relaxation technique; close your eyes and bring your attention to your breathing, take deep breaths in and slow breaths out, lulling yourself back to sleep.
Herbal remedies
For centuries, valerian root has been commonly used for its sleep-inducing properties. It works by promoting calmness and reducing stress, a common trigger for sleep disturbances. Herbal remedies offer a safe over-the-counter solution to support a restful night’s sleep with less chance of waking in the night.
Mindset shift Digital detox
When we’re tired and ready for bed, the body starts to produce more melatonin levels, signalling it’s ready to go to sleep. But when we get into bed and start scrolling or watching something on a screen, it can prevent us from falling asleep by inhibiting the production of the sleep hormone and increases levels of dopamine, which is associated with wakefulness. Make sure you dim the brightness, or better still, make your bedroom a screen-free zone.

Waking in the early hours of the morning is more common than you think, but there
Writing down daily gratitudes before you go to bed shifts your focus to positive things which have happened in your day. Studies have shown that optimistic people have a 70% lower chance of suffering from sleep disorders and can even live healthier and longer lives than pessimists.
Routine is key
It’s easy to hit the snooze button and sneak in a few more minutes sleep but waking up and going to bed at the same time each day helps to give our internal body clock the consistency it needs to maintain its sleepwake cycles. Set an alarm for the same time each morning and make waking up at the same time just as important as going to bed at a consistent hour.

The Return of the Proper Family Doctor For many families navigating ADHD and mental health challenges, things can feel overwhelming. Long waiting lists and coordinating care across different providers can leave parents feeling lost. The Doctor Clinics in Prestwich has built its practice around comprehensive, accessible care that meets families where they are – quite literally. "A lot of families that come to us are really at the end of their tether," explains Dr Gadi Shalom, Director of The Doctor Clinics. "They really like that they can leave the baggage with us and we deal with everything." What sets The Doctor Clinics apart is its 'psychiatrist to your door' service. While many private providers require weeks of waiting, this practice typically sees patients within days and conducts comprehensive psychiatric evaluations in patients' homes – particularly beneficial for children and students who don't need to be kept out of school. "ADHD assessments can take 60 to 90 minutes. At home, children can play with their toys while we speak with the parents. It's much more relaxed – they don't have to go anywhere; we come to them." As well as at home assessments, the practice also offers appointments in its Prestwich clinic. The clinic's approach goes well beyond diagnosis. Its comprehensive five-step ADHD pathway includes consultations with both a psychiatrist and consultant psychologist, computerised QB checks, and conversations with schools to build a complete picture: “We've had patients come from London because our assessments are so thorough." The practice also operates as a full private GP service, allowing truly holistic treatment. For example, a recent case saw a child being assessed for ADHD who also had severe eczema. The clinic was able to treat both conditions simultaneously. Blood tests or imaging can also be provided alongside mental health treatment. It's all available in one place, with full access to labs and diagnostic services.
Same or Next Day GP Appointments Blood Tests & Scans Outstanding ADHD Clinic
This comprehensive approach is particularly valuable given ADHD's complexity. Dr Shalom notes that while approximately 5% of the UK population has ADHD – around 2.6 million people – only 3 to 4% are actually diagnosed: "Behind those numbers, a lot of people are navigating work, relationships, and day-to-day life without fully understanding why certain things are hard.” Studies also show that up to 50% of ADHD patients have autism as well, which is why psychological screening that examines the whole patient, not just isolated symptoms, is so important. Dr Shalom also notes that ADHD is still under-diagnosed in the UK, contrary to common misconceptions about it being over-diagnosed. The team at The Doctor Clinics offers effective ADHD treatment: "We understand the science and can make a real difference. It can be life-changing for a lot of people." Treatment might involve medication, ADHD coaching to help patients manage their symptoms effectively, or a combination of both approaches depending on individual needs. The clinic's all-in package takes patients from initial concerns right through to diagnosis and GP shared care, with no hidden costs. It also offers flexible payment plans to make treatment more accessible. The Doctor Clinics opened its Prestwich practice just months ago above Village Opticians at the Longfield Centre, though the team has been providing ADHD assessments in the community for much longer. The new clinic combines their established expertise in psychiatric care with a physical base where patients can access comprehensive medical services – while maintaining the popular home visits that so many families prefer for mental health assessments. "We hold the patient's hand from the beginning to the end of the journey," Dr Shalom says. "For families in distress, having someone take over is really crucial." www.thedoctorclinics.co.uk

Non-alcoholic wines Torres Natureo 0% rosé | £6 | Ocado.com
This rosé from Torres might be a little on the sweet side but not overbearingly so. The sweetness suits it perfectly, and the finish isn't at all cloying. An excellent entry point into nonalcoholic wines.
Bolle chardonnay | £15.99 | Bolledrinks.com
The first non-alcoholic still wine in Bolle's range is crafted from chardonnay grapes and then de-alcoholised. No sugar, flavours, or aromas are added, so you get authentic chardonnay notes of apricot, lemon, and apple, alongside a silky mouthfeel and bright acidity. The traditional bottle design looks the part too.
Zeronimo Leonis blend | £25 | Zeronimo.co.uk
A premium non-alcoholic red wine that's worth the investment. This Austrian wine is made by removing the alcohol from a 98-point award-winning red. If you appreciate fine wine, this one's for you – it leaves everything else in the non-alcoholic category in the dust.
Non-alcoholic beers Days pale ale | £26.99 for 12 | Daysbrewing.com

Guinness 0.0 | £5.45 | Tesco.com
If you love Guinness, you'll love this. It has the iconic black look, the creamy head, and tastes remarkably similar to the real thing. Probably the best in terms of capturing the original. It can be hard to find in stores, so ordering online is recommended.
Brooklyn Special Effects alcohol-free lager | £5 | Waitrose.com
Brooklyn's non-alcoholic lager seriously tastes like a craft beer, with every sip ending in the bitter finish you'd expect from a real lager.
Non-alcoholic cider Sandford Orchards red zero | £27 for 12 | Sandfordorchards.co.uk
Created sustainably using local cider apples that are pressed, fermented, and matured before alcohol removal – the same method as their award-winning alcoholic cider. Deliciously juicy and tangy.

HEALTH MATTERS Vitamin D – The Winter Tonic With Dr Gadi Shalom, Director of The Doctor Clinics Vitamin D is often talked about as a vitamin, but medically it behaves more like a hormone. It’s produced in the skin in response to sunlight and plays a quiet but fundamental role in keeping the body working as it should. Unlike many nutrients, it influences multiple systems at once, which is why deficiency can be subtle, gradual, and easy to miss. Supporting overall health Vitamin D’s receptors are found throughout the body and there’s growing evidence that adequate levels support normal immune responses and may reduce the risk of frequent infections. While it is not a cure-all, maintaining sufficient vitamin D is increasingly recognised as a simple, low-risk way of

supporting overall health, especially during the darker winter months when natural sunlight exposure is limited in the UK. Symptoms Vitamin D deficiency can be easy to miss because symptoms are often vague at first. People may notice ongoing tiredness, muscle aches, or generalised bone or joint pain. Muscle weakness and cramps can occur, sometimes affecting balance or increasing the risk of falls. Because these symptoms are non-specific, deficiency is often only identified when blood tests are checked for another reason. Supplementation According to UK evidence and national guidance, most people in the UK are advised to take vitamin D during the winter months. The guidance from the chief medical officers recommends that everyone aged four years and over should consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement of 10 micrograms (400 IU) from October to March.
Some groups are advised to take it all year round rather than just in winter. This includes people who spend little time outdoors, those who cover their skin for cultural or medical reasons, people with darker skin tones, and individuals at higher clinical risk of deficiency. Check with your doctor While vitamin D is safe for most people, there are some situations where it should not be taken without medical advice. This includes people with high calcium levels, certain inflammatory or kidney conditions, or rare disorders affecting vitamin D metabolism. If you have an underlying medical condition or have been advised to monitor your calcium or vitamin D levels, it’s sensible to check with your doctor before starting supplementation. thedoctorclinics.co.uk This article is for general information and isn’t a substitute for personal medical advice. The latest phenomenon sweeping the health and wellbeing world is open water swimming; NOWCA tells us more. Open water swimming – the practice of swimming in natural bodies of water like lakes, rivers, and the sea – has surged in popularity in recent years, drawing everyone from seasoned athletes to casual adventurers. NOWCA’s mission is: more water, more people, more safely. It’s the UK’s largest network of safe open water swimming venues and it also offers the NOWCA Wild app to help swimmers find swim spots in the wild and connect them to swim groups. In recent years, people have been actively seeking ways to support both their physical and mental wellbeing and open water swimming offers a unique combination of exercise, nature, and escapism. During and after lockdown, there were limited options
available for exercise; gyms and pools were closed so for many it became a source of freedom, connection, and calm. There’s also now much more awareness around safe access to open water, with organised environments and supportive communities, making it easier and more reassuring for people to give it a try. Open water swimming feels like an adventure. There are no lanes, no chlorine, and no routine – just the natural world and that incredible sense of space. Every swim outdoors is different – the seasons, wildlife, and weather all make it a richer, more mindful experience. For those who prefer a bit of reassurance, managed venues offer lifeguarded or safety cover and clear safety procedures which gives swimmers the confidence to transition from pool to open water while still feeling supported. The health benefits are huge, with an excellent full body, low-impact workout that strengthens the heart, lungs, and Vicky Daye, founder of MMA is a muscles without registered nurse prescriber with over placing strain on the 25 years NHS nursing experience joints. suddenly tuned in to your breath, your body, and your surroundings which creates a natural form of mindfulness. Combined with the release of endorphins, this produces a mental ‘reset’ that leaves swimmers feeling calmer, clearer, and more grounded. It’s a powerful antidote to screens, stress, and the pace of everyday life. Cold water immersion triggers a surge of endorphins, dopamine, and other feel-good chemicals which can create a noticeable mood lift and sense of euphoria. Regular, controlled exposure to cold is also linked to improved stress regulation, helping swimmers feel more resilient in day-to-day life. Most people can enjoy open water swimming, but NOWCA recommends that those who may have known medical history should seek advice from their medical professional before starting. Cold water affects everyone differently and safety should always be the first priority. Start slowly, build up gradually, and swim at supervised venues or with experienced groups helps ensure a positive and safe introduction. Here are some key safety precautions for someone new to the sport… • Education – preparation is key to a safe swim. There are many resources online and coaching at managed venues. • Begin at a recognised, lifeguarded venue or with an experienced group. • Enter the water gradually to allow your body to adjust to the temperature. • Wear suitable kit – wetsuit if needed, bright swim cap for visibility, and a tow float. • Never swim alone – always swim with others or where safety cover is in place. • Know your entry and exit points and stay well within your limits. Start small, stay safe, and enjoy the experience. You don’t need to swim far or long to benefit – even just a few seconds in cold water can be incredibly rewarding.

Health coach Suzy Glaskie talks about tackling the stress epidemic and how small changes can have a big impact on our wellbeing. After over two decades working in the highpressure world of PR, Suzy Glaskie knew what chronic stress felt like. Juggling three children while running her own agency, she found herself constantly exhausted; her Sunday evenings filled with anxiety and dread contemplating the week ahead. When her father died 13 years ago, it was a turning point. She walked away from the career she'd built and retrained as a health coach, specialising in corporate wellness. Today, through her practice Peppermint Wellness, Suzy helps both individuals and companies combat what she describes as a stress crisis in modern workplaces, with around 80 to 90% of GP visits involving conditions either caused or worsened by stress. Since COVID, Suzy has witnessed a dramatic escalation in workplace anxiety, particularly as the boundaries between work and home life have dissolved. "People are looking at their work emails from the moment they wake up, and it's the last thing they look at before they go to sleep. They're not managing to have any sort of downtime. We're not designed to be on all the time." Chronic stress impacts every aspect of our wellbeing: from sleep and mood to cardiovascular health and immune function. There is also the worrying correlation between sedentary work patterns and longterm health problems: "The human body is built for regular movement – but many people are now sedentary for up to 10 hours a day. That’s incredibly harmful for our health on every level.” Suzy's approach focuses on what she calls ‘micro practices’ – simple, often free changes that create transformational results. Morning routine is her first priority: "How we start the day is the most important factor in how the day is going to go.” Rather than immediately doom-scrolling news or diving into work emails, Suzy recommends beginning with something nurturing – stretching outside, gratitude journaling, or breathing exercises: "Even if you've only got five or 10 minutes to do something, that’s going to increase your emotional resilience and improve your health." Movement is equally crucial. Suzy suggests ‘movement snacks’ – a 10-minute walk,
36
standing stretches every hour… anything to break up prolonged sitting: "There's something about the motion of walking that allows the brain to come up with creative solutions to things.” For the evening, Suzy emphases the importance of a wind-down routine: "We can't expect to have restorative sleep if we’re scrolling frightening things on Facebook in bed. Our brains are not designed to fall asleep when we’re stimulated." One of Suzy's most powerful tools is gratitude practice: "You can't think of two things at once. You can't be worried about a meeting and also grateful that you've got a nice cup of tea in front of you." By interrupting cycles of anxious thinking, gratitude journaling – practiced morning and evening – can be life-changing.
If you practice healthy habits, you're far more likely to be a healthy person. Suzy also works with companies to create meaningful cultural change. Her corporate workshops on stress management, sleep, and nutrition have produced remarkable results. Participants report losing weight, regaining energy, and resuming hobbies they'd abandoned: "It's about boundaries and helping companies to see if they actually look after their staff, who are their primary resource, it just makes sense. If they’re hemorrhaging people because they can’t cope with the stress, it's commercial suicide." For those feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of health advice available, Suzy's message is clear – start small: "Start with one thing and then you can build on that. We are our habits. If you practice healthy habits, you're far more likely to be a healthy person." Peppermintwellness.co.uk

Sunday morning saw the launch of the 36-hour matched funding campaign, with an incredible £1 million raised by 1.30pm. More than 8,000 donations – from just £5 – helped propel the total beyond £2.7 million. These funds will go towards Chai’s 70 vital specialised services, supporting individuals and their families through every stage of the cancer journey. Chai Chair, Louise Hager MBE, commented: “We have been incredibly moved and energised by the extraordinary response from our community, especially in this challenging financial climate. It powerfully reflects both how vital Chai’s services are and how strongly our community recognises the specialised care we provide. As we receive no statutory funding, every single donation makes a real difference and ensures that Chai can continue to be there for each person who needs to turn to us.” Chaicancercare.org

For many Jewish men, fitness often slips to the bottom of the list squeezed out by work, family commitments, community responsibilities, and the general pace of life. Coach G Health & Fitness was created to change that. Founded in North Manchester out of a clear need in the community, Gil Cramer (Coach G) began with a simple mission: to give men in the Jewish community a place where they feel understood, supported, and guided toward becoming the strongest, fittest version of themselves. Unlike mainstream gyms that overlook the rhythms and realities of Jewish life, Coach G was built specifically to work with it. Whether a client keeps strictly Orthodox routines or simply wants to stay healthy for their family, each programme is designed with cultural sensitivity, flexibility, and practicality at its core. What sets Coach G apart is not just the training, it’s the community. Personal training, small group sessions, an uplifting environment, and a studio culture rooted in accountability make members feel connected the moment they walk through the door. Men juggling demanding schedules finally find a space that fits around them, rather than demanding more from them.
How do you help busy men manage their packed schedules?
And as winter settles in, Coach G is preparing to launch the much-anticipated Winter Fitness Club – an eight-week reset designed to help men rebuild structure, drop post-Chanukah weight, and feel 10 years younger again.
Hi Gil, great to chat! What can new members expect when joining Coach G?
When someone walks into Coach G, the first thing they notice is the atmosphere; supportive, personal, and built around real relationships. We’ve created a space where men feel comfortable asking questions, opening up, and being honest about where they’re starting from. Whether it’s one-toone training or small group sessions, every client receives the best service. Our coaches bring a range of specialisms, but what truly drives us is helping men enjoy the journey and achieve long-term change.
What makes your studio uniquely aligned with Jewish family life?
We’re a proudly Jewish-run studio, and that matters. We understand the pressures of work, children, Shabbos meals, late-night learning, and the full Jewish calendar. Our programmes don’t fight against those realities; they’re designed around them. Whether someone is fully observant or not, we meet them exactly where they are and build a plan that fits.
Our philosophy is all about consistency through small, manageable steps. Not every session needs to be an hour, sometimes a focused five-minute movement sequence will do the trick. The goal is momentum. Busy fathers thrive when the plan is simple, structured, and achievable, and that’s exactly how we design our programmes.
What makes the Winter Fitness Club such a powerful reset?
We’ve built the Winter Fitness Club to remove overwhelm. It’s an eightweek programme with clear structure, accountability, and a nutritional strategy that supports healthy and sustainable fat loss. Members get in-studio training, a video library for days they can’t attend, and a WhatsApp support system that keeps them on track. Nothing is left to guesswork – you follow the plan, and the results follow you. Most importantly, it’s adapted for Jewish life: Shabbos meals, family time, winter routines, and the post-Chanukah reset we all need.
What would you say to someone thinking about getting started?
Reach out. Book a complimentary taster session, come in for a chat, and let us build a plan around you. The hardest step is simply showing up. Once you walk through the door, we’ll guide you the rest of the way. On Instagram @coach_g_fitness_studio coachg@coachg.fit | 07501 703 757

A LIFELINE TO FAMILIES IN THE COMMUNITY Camp Simcha has created several tailored support groups for families of ill children. When a child is seriously ill, it can feel like the world has stopped. But for many families, the support and strength they find through others in similar situations becomes a vital lifeline. In 2024, Camp Simcha launched its Communities of Support initiative, with the vision to offer peer groups and information evenings around specific medical conditions and create a community where no parent would have to face their child’s illness alone. What started as one group – JDigest@ CampSimcha, for families with children living with inflammatory bowel disease – has now developed into six, including communities for type 1 diabetes, epilepsy, eating disorders, premature babies, and the newest addition, an allergies group. Currently, Camp Simcha’s Communities of Support reach 170 people across Manchester and London. The impact has been immediate, with each
group tailored to the needs of the families. Among them, the premature baby group meets regularly, sometimes for expert-led sessions and other times to simply offer each other emotional support, encouragement, and practical advice. Invited as a guest speaker at one of the in-person and online information evenings, Emily Hills, Clinical Specialist Neonatal Occupational Therapist, reflected: “It was truly inspiring to witness so many mothers united by shared experiences coming together to learn and deepen their understanding of their little one’s unique journey. The support group clearly offers a valuable and nurturing space where parents can feel seen, heard, and supported, while also gaining knowledge and confidence in their role.” Understanding first-hand the challenges families face with a premature baby, alumni
Shifra Ebbing and Rivky Eckstein, determined to give back and help other parents on a similar journey, came together to establish ‘Tiny Together at Camp Simcha’ – a gemach service in collaboration with the charity offering loans of clothing and accessories free of charge for as long as they need. As part of its premature and special care baby service – supported by Avidan’s Mission – Camp Simcha also provides direct help to families through those early, unexpected days providing practical crisis support, therapeutic help, equipment loans, and family support. If you or someone you know with a premature baby could benefit from the charity’s support, or to find out more about the support groups, email help@campsimcha.org.uk

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY
Holocaust Centre North and Manchester Jewish Museum are preparing poignant programmes for Holocaust Memorial Day on 27th January, reflecting this year’s theme: Bridging Generations. The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2026, 'Bridging Generations', is a callto-action. A reminder that the responsibility of remembrance doesn't end with the survivors – it lives on through their children, their grandchildren, and through all of us. This theme encourages us all to engage actively with the past – to listen, to learn, and to carry those lessons forward. By doing so, we build a bridge between memory and action, between history and hope for the future.
Holocaust Centre North
Through Our Eyes is Holocaust Centre North’s (HCN) most acclaimed exhibition which presents testimonies from 16 Holocaust survivors. HCN’s work is about more than just preserving the past; with over 150 family archives, it has been conducting intergenerational interviews with second and third-generation survivors, capturing how the Holocaust's legacy continues to shape families today. This year's HMD programme will feature intergenerational talks from second and third-generation survivors from the same family. The event takes on extra significance as it marks the first Holocaust Memorial Day since the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide. Local community group 6 Million+ will contribute, with a second-generation Srebrenica survivor speaking alongside a performance exploring connections between these atrocities. The centre will also share footage from its intergenerational testimony archive, offering
Jan / Feb 2026
insight into how survivors' descendants process their family histories. Among the survivors whose legacy lives on through the centre's work is Iby Knill, a renowned Holocaust survivor and author who was passionate about interfaith and intercultural work alongside Holocaust education. "If we're hearing from survivors and second and third-generation survivors about the impacts of this history upon their family, then perhaps that reflects upon us all," Head of Communities, Dr Elanor Stannage, says. "It shows how we keep this understanding alive and take that learning forward to reduce division, connect with others, and recognise our shared humanity." Holocaustcentrenorth.org.uk
Manchester Jewish Museum
On 25th January, join Manchester Jewish Museum as it opens its doors for anyone to visit the museum for free to mark HMD.
Over the past weeks, the museum has been collaborating with local young people from the New Testament Church of God in Cheetham Hill and the King David School. Ranging in age from eight to 14, the young people have been exploring stories of Mancunian Jews whose lives were impacted by the Holocaust. In response, they created multimedia art pieces that explore the enduring importance of these stories today. This event is their chance to share their work. On the evening of the 25th from 7pm to 8.30pm, Lenka Lichtenberg will present music of the Shoah. Experience the power of music and memory in this award-winning programme, which brings to life songs inspired by the poetry of women Holocaust survivors. Lenka Lichtenberg is a Canadian musician, composer, and producer. Guided by her clear, expressive voice, she blends folk, jazz, and world music to connect cultures and share a deeply personal, often spiritual expression of her roots. During this evening performance, Lenka will perform selections from her acclaimed albums: ‘Thieves of Dreams – Songs of Theresienstadt’s Secret Poetess’, based on poetry written by Lenka’s grandmother while imprisoned at Theresienstadt Concentration Camp, and ‘Silent Tears, The Last Yiddish Tango’, drawing on the testimonies of women Holocaust survivors from Poland. Let’s come together to honour and celebrate the courage, resilience, and stories of the women whose poetry inspires these works. Manchesterjewishmuseum.com

ADVICE
FAMILY LAW Keystone Law’s Family and Matrimonial Partner, Sarah Thompson, unpacks some of the legal considerations around marriage. With Sarah Thompson, Family and Matrimonial Partner at Keystone Law As Valentine’s Day approaches and love is in the air, thoughts may turn to marriage. Ever heard someone question why anyone would want to get married? It’s just a piece of paper… isn’t it? When you marry, there is a seismic shift in the law. As an unmarried couple, you are entitled to nothing on separation purely based on the fact you happen to live together. The ‘common law’ husband or wife is an urban myth. If you’re unmarried, you cannot claim spousal maintenance if you separate. You’re not entitled to money in accounts or
investments held in the sole name of your ex-partner. You would only be entitled to any pension benefits if you are nominated in your partner’s pension scheme or plan. Upon separation, that nomination is likely to change to someone else. On the plus side, you’re not liable for any liabilities in their name. The property you live in – unless it’s in joint names – belongs to your partner and, unless you can satisfy some rather narrow and potentially tricky legal requirements, you’re unlikely to be able to establish a beneficial interest in that property – you’re living there because your partner allows you to. Upon separation, that permission to live there is likely to be withdrawn and, sadly, that can happen abruptly. Even if you have chosen not to get married, I suggest that you get your affairs in order so that both of you are protected should, for example, one of you die or should you
separate. This is especially prudent if you have children. Of course, how you choose to live your life is a matter for you. Just be aware that the law does not always work how you expect it to or feel it should. There is no substitute for getting quality, professional legal advice at the earliest opportunity. Whether you are getting married and wondering about a pre-nuptial agreement, or your marriage is ending and you want to know where you stand, I can help you plan your next steps. Sarah Thompson is an experienced family solicitor who specialises in settling financial disputes between divorcing and unmarried couples. Celebrating Tu B'Shevat, the Jewish new year for trees. While most of us associate Jewish new year celebrations with the apple-dipped honey of Rosh Hashanah, the Mishnah reveals there are actually four new years in the Jewish calendar, one of which being Tu B'Shevat – falling on the 15th of Shevat, this year it occurs from the evening of 1st February to sundown on 2nd February – when trees themselves get their own birthday celebration. Tu B'Shevat originated as an agricultural marker in ancient Israel, determining when farmers should pay tithes on fruit from their trees. The Talmud explains that by the 15th of Shevat, most winter rainfall has already fallen, meaning any fruit blossoming afterwards belongs to the following year's crop. This evolved into a celebration of our connection to the natural world. In the 16th century, the mystics of Safed created an elaborate Tu B'Shevat seder – modelled on the Passover meal – featuring four cups of wine (progressing from white to red, symbolising the seasons) and specific fruits representing different spiritual levels. Many contemporary synagogues have revived this ritual.
42
The most delicious Tu B'Shevat tradition involves eating fruit, with focus particularly on the seven species that the Torah uses to praise the land of Israel: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates. Many families make a point of trying a new fruit they haven't tasted this season, reciting the Shehecheyanu blessing to mark the occasion. For families with children, Tu B'Shevat offers opportunities for hands-on learning. Plant seeds indoors, create a family tree exploring your ancestry, or make an edible fruit mandala as a colourful centrepiece. Reading tree-themed books together helps younger children understand why trees matter, while older kids might enjoy learning about environmental responsibility through a Jewish lens. In recent times, Tu B'Shevat has taken on new significance as Jewish communities around the world embrace environmental consciousness. The holiday reminds us that the world is a sacred gift to humanity, entrusted to our care – a message that resonates powerfully in our current climate crisis.
There’s particular local resonance, too, here in Manchester. The City of Trees initiative aims to plant three million trees across Greater Manchester by 2037 – one for every person living in the region. This ambitious vision aligns with Tu B'Shevat's emphasis on our responsibility toward the natural world. Many families mark Tu B'Shevat by donating to organisations like JNF that plant trees in Israel, but why not also consider supporting local tree-planting efforts? Whether through City of Trees volunteer days or simply planting something in your own garden, the act of putting roots in Manchester soil while honouring ancient traditions creates a bridge between past and present. This Tu B'Shevat, whether you're attending a seder, enjoying a fresh pomegranate, or planting a tree, we can appreciate a tradition that celebrates growth, renewal, and our deep connection to the earth. Kitzbühel | Austria
Dominated by three majestic mountain ranges, Kitzbühel boasts flowing terrain that’s weaved between snow-laden forests and traditional mountain villages including Reith, Aurach, and Jochberg. Known to locals as Kitz, Kitzbühel is home to perfectly groomed slopes, a state-of-theart lift system, 233km of pistes, and a ski season that runs from early December until late March. Despite being home to what is considered one of the most challenging downhill slopes in the world (Hahnenkamm Streif), a total of 58 gondolas and lifts facilitate fun for beginners and professionals like. The Kitz Mini-Streif slope is tailormade for beginners, offering a gentle introduction to skiing for the little ones. For more adventurous kids, attractions like the mini mouse trap, the chamois, the 'steep slope', and the Kids-Hausbergkante provide thrilling experiences and skill development opportunities. If you’re looking for more than just skiing, there’s endless ways to enjoy the mountains in Kitz. Tobogganing, night skiing, winter hiking, cross-country hiking, skiing on the ice, or even a freezing dip in Schwarzsee – the resort’s ‘winter classics’ offer a true taste of alpine adventure. Let’s not forget après-ski activities! The
44
surrounding areas of the ski resort are home to a wide variety of tasty treats that range from local dishes in the mountain huts and traditional inns in the valley to international gourmet cuisine.
TRAVEL
Val-d’Isère | France
Widely recognised as one of the world’s best ski resorts, Val-d’Isère is among the most stylish and authentic in the Alps. The resort offers everything that lovers of skiing, fine dining, and wellbeing could possibly want – a spa, pool, yoga, and delightful opportunities to stroll and unwind. With a ski season that runs from the first weekend in December to the beginning of May, there’s plenty of time to visit this glamorous location. There’s over 300km of slopes to explore and snow is always guaranteed due to the resort’s high altitude and top-quality snow guns which cover 65km of runs. For those days you don’t feel like hitting the slopes, Val-d’Isère prides itself on the number of other activities available in and around the resort. With everything ranging from ice skating and snowmobile riding to ice floating and paragliding, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy your holiday. Fancy partying with an après-ski session right on the slopes? You can start by lingering after lunch at one of the lively mountain restaurants like La Folie Douce where you’ll enjoy a Cabaret-style show or music mixed by a DJ and Bar de l’Ouillette which invites you to enjoy the sun, sipping at a glass of rosé on the terrace. In the Daille sector, the Barillon de la Rosée Blanche is well-known for its wild, English-speaking après-ski scene. There’s also the lively Bar des Tontons which spreads across two floors with its open-plan mezzanine that hosts daily concerts, wine or beer tasting nights, morning wellness activities, and afternoon lectures.
Cortina d’Ampezzo | Italy
Often described as ‘the queen of the Dolomites’, Cortina d’Ampezzo has long lured the international jetsetter, with Hollywood stars – including Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, and Brigitte Bardot – and European elites choosing it as a holiday spot since the 1950s. Despite this exclusivity, Cortina retains an authentic Italian soul. In addition to attracting a plethora of illustrious visitors, Cortina was the site of the first ever Winter Olympics to be held in Italy in 1956. 70 years later, next year in 2026, it will host them again! With this being just months away, the resort is almost ready to welcome an influx of spectators. One of the biggest investments that’s been made in preparation for this is the 4.6km-long Cortina skyline gondola, whisking skiers from Tofane to the ruggedly beautiful Cinque Torri area. With slopes of all grades of difficulty, breathtaking scenery, and a ski season that runs from December to April, Cortina is a coveted destination for ski and snowboard enthusiasts. There are 120km of pistes that wind through the spectacular views of the two ski slopes of Faloria – Cristallo to the east and Tofana, Pocol, Cinque Torri, and Falzarego to the west. Famed for its luxury and exclusivity, many Cortina devotees spend more time shopping and strolling along the glamorous Corso Italia promenade and sipping aperitivos than they do skiing – you really do get the best of both worlds here!
Verbier 4Vallées | Switzerland
Ideal for expert skiers, the largest ski area entirely located in Switzerland is open for 10 months every year. The Verbier 4Vallées area is paradise for skiers, snowboarders, and mountain bikers where you can escape to the summits and explore beautiful scenery. Spanning four distinct valleys, the ski area offers over 400km of pistes plus some of the world’s most challenging off-piste terrain – it’s not for the faint-hearted! The first valley is Verbier, where the famous Attelas piste starts at 2,700m and there’s an exhilarating 1,000m-long descent. In the Bruson area, you’ll find the La Pasay slope with two choices: a black run with a 35° slope at the top or a second option which circles round a hill before gradually becoming steeper. With a 600m vertical drop, it promises quite the challenge! SavoleyresLa Tzoumaz is a red run that’s 2,354m and takes you down the northern face towards La Tzoumaz. At 3,330m, Mont-Fort is the highest point of the ski area, where the black runs down the Tortin glacier. After a long day of some of the most challenging slopes in Europe, it’s only right that there are plenty of opportunities to let your hair down! Verbier offers many bars and pubs, including Bar 1936, Ice Cube Bar and many more!

Home Comforts Home Instead provides thoughtful home care that can help our older relatives stay independent and confident in the place they love most. As we move into a new year, many of us naturally find ourselves reflecting – on family, health, and how life is changing for those we love most. It’s a time when questions about independence, wellbeing, and support come into clearer focus, especially for older adults who may be finding day-to-day life a little harder than before. One thing we hear consistently from our clients and their families is that the desire to stay at home remains incredibly strong. Home isn’t just a place – it’s identity, memory, community, and comfort. For many, the ability to remain in familiar surroundings is directly linked to a sense of dignity and control over their lives. The reality is that ageing can come with challenges. Many older adults quietly express worries about keeping up with everyday tasks, staying connected socially, or maintaining confidence after a fall or period of illness. Others speak about feeling left out as life speeds up around them, particularly when technology or everyday environments become harder to navigate. Ageing well isn’t simply about staying physically healthy; it’s about feeling valued, supported, and able to continue doing the things that make life meaningful. That was exactly what brought June to Home Instead earlier this year. The 78-yearold had always been fiercely independent – a retired librarian with a love of poetry and a long-established routine of meeting friends for coffee every Tuesday. After a fall at home, her confidence took a knock. Her daughters noticed she had quietly stopped going out as much and she confessed one day that she was worried she might fall again when nobody was around. She was also finding it harder to prepare meals and manage some everyday tasks that had once been second nature. June wasn’t ready – emotionally or physically – to consider leaving her home. Her memories, books, garden, and sense of
46
identity were woven into the place she’d built for over 50 years. So, her daughters explored the idea of support at home, hoping it might give her the reassurance she needed to stay where she felt most herself. That’s when she met Claire, a Home Instead Care Professional whose quiet, thoughtful approach put June at ease straight away. At first, the visits were about practical help: support with meal preparation, a steady arm when walking outside, and help with household tasks that had become more difficult. It was then that something unexpected happened; with the worries lifted, June began to re-engage with the things she loved. Claire encouraged her to start a small poetry group online – something she’d talked about for years but never felt confident enough to launch. They attended a couple of local community events together, and before long, June had returned to her weekly Tuesday coffee meet-up, this time with a little more assurance and a lot more joy. This is the heart of what good home care can do. It’s not just about support; it’s about enabling people to continue living a life that’s recognisably their own. Ageing isn’t defined by what we've lost – it’s shaped by what we have the opportunity to keep. The right support, delivered with dignity and genuine companionship, restores not only capability but also hope, purpose, and connection. As we step into the months ahead, perhaps it’s time to rethink how we approach ageing. Instead of waiting for a crisis, we can look at home care as an investment in wellbeing – a way to keep older loved ones safe, engaged, and confidently living the lives they choose. Because maintaining independence isn’t about simply living at home; it’s about feeling at home in your life, every single day. Homeinstead.co.uk

ARTS INTERVIEW
Journalist, Tour Guide, and Author of Manchester: The Biography, Ed Glinert, talks his new book and Jewish contributions to the city’s history. Landing in Manchester from London in 1977, Ed Gilnert started his journalism career at the student newspaper – The Mancunion – before founding City Life and working for Private Eye and MOJO music magazine in the 90s. He has since become one of the country’s most prolific tour guides, working in many UK cities, and has a growing list of books to his name and Manchester: The Biography is the latest in his repertoire. He describes it as ‘the first epic, detailed, and accurate history of the world’s first modern city – from the Romans to 21st century renaissance and from cotton machines to cultural richness’. Manchester’s history is something that Ed has always had great passion for and in 2008, he published The Manchester Compendium: “That was the first ever time anyone had ever done a kind of gazetteer to Manchester area by area, street by street, and building by building.” It was this passion combined with his writing skills and knowledge from over 5,000 tours of the city that led him to write the latest book: “Nobody had ever done a proper epic history of Manchester before; its history books are either quite banal or written by academics and totally unreadable. Most of these books only deal with cotton, engineering, and the war, and nobody had gone into the depth that I like. People want to read something interesting, and I wanted to write something they would pick up and read most of it in one go.” As a Jewish historian, it was important for Ed to include the contributions of Jews in Manchester: “Bill Williams has done a wonderful job about the Jewish history of Manchester but that was the book – it’s literally called Jewish Manchester: An Illustrated History. I thought that the general history of the city needed to have a good Jewish section which is very poignant given the oppression faced by community at
50
the minute. I wanted the section to convey that we’re not going to be destroyed by this; we’re going to proclaim ourselves proudly in a general history of Manchester that mostly non-Jewish people will read. “I’ve done it in an original way by calling the chapter ‘A Manchester Man Creates the State of Israel’ just to grab people’s attention, especially with Israel currently being rather unpopular outside of the Jewish world.” The story of Chaim Weitzman and the Balfour Declaration is the main Jewish focus of the book. Chaim moved to Manchester in the early 1900s and taught in the chemistry department at the University of Manchester before becoming Israel’s first president: “During the First World War, the government was getting short of acetone and needed to find a cheap way of distilling it so turned to the nation’s chemists. Weitzman solved the problem by discovering that you can distil acetone easily from horse chestnuts. “Churchill couldn’t thank Weitzman enough and asked how the country could repay him and he responded: ‘you can take my plans for a Jewish homeland more seriously’. Which resulted in
the Balfour Declaration and the creation of what we know today as Israel.” Despite Jewish people in Manchester playing such an important role in history, Ed believes there’s still more work to be done on awareness: “I’ve stopped doing my Jewish tour of the city as nobody’s been booking it because of the current situation. I’ve been doing it for private Jewish groups but on the general public’s awareness of things, there’s so much more work to be done.” Up next for Ed is what he describes as a ‘mammoth Kabbalah thriller’: “The Kabbalah is a mysterious body of Hebrew legend and myth that only rabbis are supposed to know. I’m putting it into a semi-fictional setting with all the characteristics of a thriller. It’s such an epic book, it’s taking me forever to write – one day I might finish it!” Newmanchesterwalks.com
PANCAKE DAY
Toss For It!
As Pancake Day approaches, we explore the history behind this delicious tradition and discover the best spots in Manchester to enjoy a stack.
Shrove Tuesday – commonly known as Pancake Day – marks the traditional feast day before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. The name comes from 'shrive', meaning to give absolution after confession. In AngloSaxon times, Christians were 'shriven' of their sins on this day, summoned by a bell that became known as the 'Pancake Bell' – a tradition that continues in some churches today. Falling 47 days before Easter, Shrove Tuesday's date varies each year between 3rd February and 9th March. This year it falls on 17th February. The pancake tradition has practical origins – Lent was a time of fasting and Shrove Tuesday offered the last chance to use up rich foods like eggs, fats, and milk. Pancakes proved the perfect solution, with the ingredients themselves carrying symbolic meaning – eggs for creation, flour for the staff of life, salt for wholesomeness, and milk for purity. Despite its Christian roots, of course we all love a pancake, and the tradition is enjoyed by many communities. Pancakes have appeared in cookery books since 1439, and the tradition of tossing them dates to 1619. A traditional English pancake is thin and delicate – as opposed to the thick American-style stacks that have become popular – and is typically served with golden syrup or lemon juice and caster sugar. The most famous pancake race takes place at Olney in Buckinghamshire, supposedly originating in 1445 when a woman heard the church bell while making pancakes and ran there, frying pan in hand. Today's competitors must be local housewives wearing aprons and hats, tossing their pancakes three times during the race. The first to complete the course, arrive at the church, serve her pancake to the bellringer, and be kissed by him is declared the winner. At Westminster School in London, the annual Pancake Greaze sees boys race to grab the largest portion of a huge pancake tossed over a fivemetre-high bar. Other regional traditions have largely faded, including Scarborough's communal skipping and the traditional 'mob football' games that once took place in many towns on Shrove Tuesday. While cooking pancakes at home remains a popular way to mark the date, Manchester's culinary scene offers some great alternatives. Here are a few top spots to head for on Pancake Day.

Shattered But Unbroken Since 2002, Imperial War Museum North has been telling powerful stories of conflict through one of Manchester’s most distinctive museum buildings. Standing at the edge of the Manchester Ship Canal, the Imperial War Museum (IWM) North’s building is a striking feature of the city’s skyline. The first branch of Imperial War Museums outside southeast England, IWM North was the first to be purpose-built as a museum and the location itself is historically significant. During both World Wars, Trafford Park was a vital centre of munitions production, with factories churning out the weapons, tanks, and engines that supported the war effort. The area became a main target during the Manchester Blitz, with extensive damage to factories and warehouses across the district.
The building was designed by internationally acclaimed architect Daniel Libeskind. Born in Poland to parents who survived the Holocaust, Libeskind would later design the Jewish Museum in Berlin and create the masterplan for New York's Ground Zero site. His philosophy is that architecture should give richer meaning to its subject, which informs his design concept for the Imperial War Museum – a globe shattered by conflict into three fragments, then reassembled – but fundamentally forever changed. The three shards represent earth, air, and water – the three realms of conflict. The Earth Shard houses the museum's

The gallery floor is deliberately curved, gradually dropping away like the curvature of the Earth from a nominal ‘North Pole’ near the entrance. The 55-metre-high Air Shard provides the museum's dramatic entrance, while the Water Shard features a café with canal views, offering visitors a space to reflect and recharge. The building's disorienting architecture is intentional. Sharp angles, sloping floors, and leaning walls are designed to unsettle and disorient, intensifying the impact of the exhibitions. At the heart of the museum experience is the Big Picture Show, an awardwinning 360-degree cinematic presentation that runs throughout the day. Using surround sound and projected digital moving images and photographs, the show reflects not only on the immediate effects of war, but also on what happens after the guns stop firing. Current exhibitions include Spies, Lies, and Deception – a free, family-friendly exhibition exploring deception and espionage from the First World War to the present day. Its volunteer programme engages local people at risk of social exclusion, providing opportunities to develop skills and confidence while working as part of the front-of-house teams. Since opening, IWM North has collected numerous accolades, including being named one of the top ten buildings of the last century and winning a Silver Award at VisitBritain's Excellence in England Awards. ADVICE
FINANCE With Murray Patt, Founder of Hale-based accountants Alexander Knight & Co. 2026: The year AI becomes mainstream As an accountant who works closely with small and medium-sized businesses, I’ve watched technology trends come and go. But 2026 is different. This is the year AI stopped being a buzzword and became a practical, everyday tool and one that SMEs can use themselves to improve operations, strengthen performance, and drive growth. What’s most exciting is that AI is no longer limited to specialist departments or large corporations. It’s accessible, user-friendly, and increasingly built into the tools business owners use daily. Here are the positive, real-world uses of AI I’m seeing within our client base and the wider business community…
Murray Patt of Hale-based accountants Alexander Knight & Co explains how your business can make use of AI tools that are changing the way people do business. Customer service that runs 24/7 AI chatbots and virtual assistants now provide instant customer support, answer FAQs, book appointments, and manage enquiries even outside working hours. For SMEs, this means better customer satisfaction without hiring additional staff – and no missed leads when the phone isn’t answered. Smarter marketing with less effort AI-powered platforms can now create social media posts, write marketing emails, suggest campaign ideas, and even design graphics. They analyse performance data in real time, helping you understand what works and where to focus your budget. For small teams, this dramatically increases output without increasing costs. Streamlining admin and workflow Businesses are using AI tools to automate scheduling, send reminders, generate proposals, transcribe meetings, and summarise documents. Voice-activated systems make it easier than ever to turn quick thoughts into organised tasks. This reduces admin time and frees teams to focus on higher value work.

Improved recruitment and staffing AI can screen CVs, shortlist candidates, and even assess applicant fit based on skills and culture. This speeds up hiring and helps SMEs compete for talent. Some tools also predict staffing needs based on demand trends, supporting better workforce planning. Enhanced sales and lead management AI-driven CRM tools automatically score leads, highlight warm prospects, and suggest the best times to follow up. This helps sales teams prioritise their efforts and close deals more efficiently. Better decision-making through insights AI analytics tools can interpret complex data (from customer behaviour to website traffic) and deliver simple, actionable recommendations. You no longer need to be a data expert to understand trends and make informed decisions. Remember, AI doesn’t replace the people in a business… it amplifies them. For SMEs, the opportunity is huge: higher productivity, lower costs, and faster growth. My advice to every business owner is simple: start experimenting. In 2026, AI is no longer optional. It’s an advantage you can’t afford to ignore. If you’re looking to change your accountants in 2026 speak directly to Murray Patt on 0161 980 8788 or email murray@alexanderknightaccountants.co.uk

BUSINESS NEWS American Investment Powers New Jobs
Greater Manchester has received £42.6 million of American investment and 795 new jobs from 11 American companies in the last 12 months. The country accounts for 27% of all foreign direct investment into the region, making it a key driver of its international growth ambitions. The investments, facilitated by MIDAS (Manchester’s inward investment agency) include major commitments from US-based companies such as S&P Global, Fitch Global, Mark43, Greentec Auto, and Boom Inc. Technologies UK Ltd. The investments, including global gaming companies and major consumer brands, span advanced manufacturing and low carbon, financial, professional and business services, creative, digital and tech, and life sciences.
Funding for Total Fitness
Total Fitness has secured £15 million in new funding to support its future growth. The business, which operates 16 gyms across the North of England, including Whitefield and Wilmslow, has secured funding from OakNorth Bank to support the company’s next phase of investment and growth – to expand operations and improve facilities. Tom Rayner, Chief Financial Officer at Total Fitness, said: “This recapitalisation marks an important milestone for Total Fitness, creating a well-invested platform for the next phase of our growth. We are committed to continuing our investment in our people, our facilities, and the overall experience we offer members. The continued support of NorthEdge, RooGreen Ventures, and our dynamic banking partner OakNorth demonstrates their confidence in the business today and in our ambition for the future.” In addition, Total Fitness is exploring the rollout of standalone women-only gyms, building on the success of purpose-built spaces introduced alongside existing clubs.
Manchester Tackles Empty Homes
Greater Manchester is set to launch a major new programme to get a grip on the housing crisis by tackling pressures on temporary accommodation and turning long-term empty homes into safe, secure housing for families in need. Rising demand for temporary accommodation, a shortage of affordable homes, and escalating costs have left councils increasingly reliant on expensive alternatives that are often unsuitable and place a significant strain on local budgets. The new £11.7 million programme will fund an expert team of 17 new empty homes officers across all 10 councils, who will identify vacant properties, engage with owners, and support the refurbishment or leasing of homes. Alongside this, a £10.6 million fund will enable councils to provide financial incentives, repair support, and temporary leasing options for at least 400 empty homes, ensuring they can be quickly brought into use as temporary or settled accommodation for families.

Navitas to Invest $1.17 Billion
Israeli energy exploration and production partnership Navitas Petroleum has made a final investment decision on the Sea Lion oil field off the coast of the Falkland Islands. The revenue from the oil field will be worth an estimated £4 million for the Falkland Islands, worth £100 million to each of its 3,500 residents. The Argentinean government, which claims ownership of the islands, has failed in its efforts to halt the project. The Sea Lion oil field contains an estimated 819 million barrels of oil. The cost of developing Phase I is $1.8 billion; Navitas’ share will be $1.17 billion, with the rest paid by its partners, mainly UK company Rockhopper Exploration. The project is expected to start production in the first quarter of 2028.
Apax Partners Buys Yad2
UK-based private equity firm Apax Partners has signed an agreement to buy Israel’s leading online classifieds platform, Yad2, from global investment house KKR in a deal valued at around $950 million. The sale marks one of the most significant Israeli tech transactions of 2025 and underscores continued foreign investor confidence in the country’s digital economy. Based in Tel Aviv, Yad2 has long been Israel’s go-to destination for second-hand goods, real estate listings, cars, jobs, and more. The company has posted strong growth in recent years. Revenues have risen steadily on the back of increased listings, the success of premium advertising tools and an expanding base of paying users. Apax Partners has long been investing across technology, services, healthcare, and consumer/internet companies and in 2015, it established a dedicated Israel fund, Apax Mid Market Israel Opportunities (AMI) as a platform for investing in mid-market Israeli companies, or those with a significant Israeli heritage.
Israel Joins Pax Silica Initiative
Israel has joined the Pax Silica Initiative, an international coalition aimed at securing the supply chain for materials used to create semiconductors utilised in advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology. National Economic Council Chairman Avi Simhon said: “Israel’s participation in Pax Silica is a badge of honour for the state of Israel and the Israeli hi-tech industry. Together with our international partners, we are working to fortify the global AI industry, strengthen the resilience of supply chains, and ensure the economic and security prosperity of the participating countries and their citizens.” The initiative’s stated goal is to establish an international framework to ‘unite the leading technology nations and jointly establish the economic order of the AI era’ through the building of a ‘secure, resilient, and innovative technological ecosystem’.

BUSINESS INTERVIEW
Marvellous Manchester! We meet Marketing Manchester’s Rebecca Abrahams and find out how she's putting the city on the map and enticing visitors from around the world. Hi Becky! Tell us about your role at Marketing Manchester!
We’re the official promotional agency for Greater Manchester and our job is to promote the city as a place to visit, study, live, work, and meet. I largely focus on the visitor economy, encouraging people to come to Greater Manchester as a destination for city breaks and longer stays. Within our team, we have people working on the UK and Ireland markets. I focus on long-haul destinations such as the US, China, and India. In Europe, we're active in Spain, Italy, Germany, and Ireland. We work closely with Manchester Airport as one of our key stakeholders.
region. We help promote major events – the family-friendly ones and large-scale events like Halloween in the City, the Christmas Markets, Chinese New Year, Manchester Flower Festival, and Manchester International Festival. These events attract both domestic and international visitors. We also have strong relationships with all our partners – accommodation providers, attractions, experiences, and venues throughout the cityregion work with us on a partnership basis.
So how did the role come about?
I grew up in north Leeds before studying Tourism Management at Manchester Metropolitan University, I loved the city and stayed, landing the role with Marketing Manchester six years ago as a marketing assistant. I've progressed through the organisation, to the position of marketing manager, which I've been doing for two years. I handle project management, consumer campaigns, and work with travel agents and tour operators from around the world. I get to travel to those markets and speak to them directly, which is quite exciting.
That must be the best perk of the job!
It's a massive benefit of course, and I love working in travel which I'm passionate about. I just got back from Spain last week from a VisitBritain roadshow. We work very closely with VisitBritain because they're promoting Britain overall, and as part of that, we talk about Greater Manchester.
How important is fostering local relationships with key city stakeholders?
We have a close relationship with Manchester City Council and work with MIDAS on the investment side, bringing medium-sized businesses and foreign investment to the city-
58
2025 must have been a busy year with Oasis reuniting?
Absolutely! Last year was really exciting. We did a lot on social media around the Oasis gigs, and the city was buzzing. We've been promoting Manchester's music heritage more broadly – we had the MTV EMAs last year, and the Manchester International Festival took place in the summer, too. The opening of the Co-op Live arena in 2024 has brought in world-class gigs as well. With the announcements of the MOBO and BRIT Awards at the beginning of the year, it really helps push Manchester as a music city.
What exciting developments in the city will you be promoting in the year ahead? Manchester City Football Club is a big story – they're expanding their stadium and improving their tour. The stadium tour is already very immersive, but they're adding a VR experience and a rooftop walk. They're building a 401-bed hotel, creating a fan zone area, a new club shop, and a museum. That whole area is transforming into more of a
destination experience rather than just going to a match. The AO Arena has also had a refurbishment, increasing capacity from 21,000 to 23,000, with new bars and a new VIP suite. We're always getting exciting new hotels – Treehouse Hotel opened last year, and Mollie’s Motel, which is part of Soho House opened recently on the site of the former Granada TV Studios.
There seems to be lots happening around Trafford Park and other areas?
We had a company-wide meeting where the people who look after the whole Trafford Park area shared their plans about how that district is developing. Therme, the UK's first wellbeing resort, has broken ground now and started building, so we'll be promoting it. We've been talking about it for years, so it's exciting that construction has finally begun. I can't wait for it! Manchester is definitely in a growth phase, and it's really exciting to be part of it. We're working closely with all the boroughs and supporting accommodation providers, experiences, attractions, and other partners to help enhance what they're doing.
In terms of promoting Manchester internationally, you certainly don't have a shortage of selling points!
I know! There are so many different themes we can talk about. Sport is always key – everyone already knows about that. But there's also our heritage – we were the heart of the Industrial Revolution. Our music heritage is incredible. The food and drink scene is really thriving. And the culture – the museums and galleries we have to offer, many of them are free, which is a great selling point. The accessibility and connectivity across the city-region is fantastic with the tram network. People really appreciate that – you can get around and see a lot of the city-region quite quickly.

King David High School’s new Head Teacher, Tracy Basger, talks about her plans for the school and offers advice to parents looking to encourage more effective study habits in their children. After almost 30 years teaching at King David High School, Tracy Basger has recently been appointed its new head teacher. Her vision for the school’s future is one where Manchester’s Jewish children can learn and thrive, underpinned by high standards, strong values, and a renewed sense of belonging at the heart of the community. Since becoming interim head teacher in September 2024, Tracy wasted no time in implementing changes at the school: “We were very high achieving for a long time but had a real dip because of COVID which resulted in changes to children’s wellbeing and mental health. We had to focus on safeguarding and wellbeing which meant that behaviour dropped significantly. “My first aim was getting behaviour sorted because without good behaviour, you can't get the teaching right. We implemented a new policy that’s had a transformative effect on classroom learning – we now use a praise and reward policy and ensure every teacher uses the same language. When every teacher has a different method of doing things, it builds cognitive overload in a child’s brain, so we introduced a structured and consistent approach to raise behaviour standards. “The second big change I implemented was being stricter on the sixth form in terms of dress code and making sure their study room was staffed. A-level results have improved from 9% A*’s to 22%. I’m raising standards back up by taking things back to basics and working really hard on staff training. My little tagline for the school is excellence, opportunity, and belonging – I think those

are three things that make us stand out from where we were a few years ago.” Tracy’s long-term vision for the school is simply that Jewish children go there: “10 to 15 years ago, most Jewish children were with us rather than grammar schools, but because our standards dropped a little, we started to lose children. For this to be a successful Jewish school, we need the community to support us and to send their children here. For the continuity of any Jewish community in Manchester, this school is pivotal.
My first aim was getting behaviour sorted because without good behaviour, you can't get the teaching right. “Previous students are now leaders in the community, and we want that for the future. All I can do is make it the best it can be and make it attractive for everyone to send their children here. We do that by making sure that every young person feels valued, supported, and able to flourish. “Our ethos is Emet (integrity) and Emunah
(faith) and they're not just words; they’re literally the compass that drives everything we do. They shape education and blend academic excellence with a moral purpose.” Asked what advice she would give to parents keen to support good study habits, Tracy emphasises that effective learning is about remembering, not simply rewriting notes: “What really works is testing memory by trying exam questions, checking mark schemes, seeing what you’ve got right or wrong, and then going back over it.” Techniques such as learning facts, covering them up, and writing them down helps move knowledge into long-term memory. This approach underpins the school’s focus on retrieval practice in lessons, regularly revisiting material from previous lessons. Tracy says revision at home should mirror this, with pupils spending short, regular periods reviewing what they’ve learned rather than cramming. She also stresses the importance of environment: “Phones are one of the biggest distractions and should be kept out of reach during revision. A quiet, well-lit space, plenty of water, regular breaks, fresh air, and exercise all help concentration.” Above all, Tracy highlights consistency and independence: “Don’t do homework for them,” she advises. “Allowing children to struggle – particularly in Year 7, 8, and 9 – builds resilience and strong habits of attention that will support them throughout their education.”

From free community courses to degree programmes, providers are making education accessible with flexible timetables and financial support. Manchester Adult Education Service (MAES) is at the heart of the city's commitment to lifelong learning, offering courses that range from fundamental skills like English, maths, and digital literacy to workplace qualifications in business administration, leadership, and management. With learning centres spread across the city, MAES brings education directly to communities. Many courses are free, and the service offers financial assistance for those on low incomes. The Make it Happen Careers and Progression Service provides free impartial advice about next steps, while short employability courses help prepare learners for the job market. For residents of Prestwich and Whitefield, Bury Adult Learning Service provides courses right on the doorstep at Prestwich Library & Adult Learning Centre. provider, with six campuses across Greater Manchester offering adult courses in over 17 subject areas. From automotive and construction to hospitality, healthcare, music, and visual arts, the college combines industrystandard facilities with expert tutors to create a supportive learning environment. The college understands that finances shouldn't be a barrier to education. The Adult Skills Fund provides government support for 19 to 23-year-olds studying Level 2 or 3 qualifications, while Advanced Learner Loans are available for those aged 19 and over pursuing Level 3 or 4 courses. The 19+ Access to Industry Award can help with tuition fees, childcare, and travel costs, and all students arriving between 8am and 9.30am can enjoy free breakfast. For residents of Cheadle and the surrounding areas, Cheadle College provides Access to Higher Education courses, professional qualifications, apprenticeships, and a range of leisure courses to support confidence building and progression into the workplace. Many courses are free or partfunded, making it easier to return to learning or upskill for career advancement. If you’re considering higher education, UCEN Manchester offers a step-by-step approach that recognises adult learners' needs. Rather than committing to three years upfront, students can build qualifications year by year: Higher National Certificate in year one, Higher National Diploma or
Foundation Degree in year two, and Honours Degree in year three. If circumstances change, you can step away after any year with an industry-recognised qualification. With half of UCEN's students being mature learners, the institution understands the challenges of returning to education and offers blended learning that fits around work and family commitments. At the dawn of a new year, there's no better time to invest in yourself. Many providers offer open events where prospective students can tour facilities, meet tutors, and learn about financial support. So, whether you're looking to change career, add new strings to your bow, or finally pursue that qualification you always wanted, adult education providers are ready to support your journey.

Keep Thinking
Josh Blackburn, CEO of TLC LIVE, explores the topic of using AI in education and highlights why guiding children to think critically remains essential. Josh Blackburn is CEO of TLC Live – a platform for online tutoring services that are delivered by qualified teachers – so has seen first hand the effect that artificial intelligence (AI) is having on today’s younger generation. With students turning to AI tools more frequently, the need for guidance on how to use them appropriately has never been more pressing.
Jan / Feb 2026
Research from MIT earlier this year revealed that AI can reduce critical thinking in adults. If that’s true for adults with mature reasoning skills, how might it shape the developing minds of children and teenagers who will grow up with AI as the norm? While concern is real, it doesn’t mean AI should be banned from classrooms. What it does show is how important it is to teach pupils how to use these tools responsibly and thoughtfully. Josh believes that AI should support learning, not shortcut it. Used well, it can deepen understanding, spark creativity, and help pupils see new perspectives. But technology must never replace the process of thinking critically. Children need to develop their own reasoning skills and we shouldn’t allow them to lean solely on AI for ‘easy answers’, especially as we know these LLMs can create false narratives. AI is most powerful when it acts as a supplement to great teaching. A well phrased prompt can help a student explore new angles for an essay or find additional resources to build their knowledge. It can also fuel curiosity by encouraging questions like: “What else could this mean?” or “How might I approach this differently?”. Yet, every AI generated answer needs to be scrutinised, not accepted at face value, and certainly not copy and pasted by students. The habit of healthy scepticism is essential in a world where AI is increasingly everywhere. Even Google’s CEO has warned against blindly trusting AI, serving as a reminder of why teaching digital literacy is vital. Pupils need explicit teaching on how to use AI creatively and purposefully without relying on it. We know AI is rife with bias (and that it can reinforce and worsen our own
biases), so parents and schools need to ensure children have the skills to check sources, recognise any bias or misinformation, and spot when hallucinated information appears. These lessons will help children think independently, even when the technology is doing much of the legwork. Parents also play a key role, you should encourage your child to explore AI tools but balance that with traditional learning methods such as reading books, doing practice questions, creative writing, or working with tutors. Curiosity is good, but critical curiosity is much better. While AI platforms may seem more trustworthy than social media, they can still deliver inaccurate or unrealistic information. Parents should monitor screen time and make sure their child has plenty of offline, social, and creative activities to keep that balance. Subjects with fixed answers – such as maths and science – present a particular challenge. While AI can recall formulas, pupils still need to understand them. In English, AI might suggest structures for essays, but students must form and defend their own arguments. Critical thinking and memory are core skills, and creativity is a muscle that only strengthens through practice. With the right balance, AI can make learning empowering and inclusive. But the real magic still lies in the moments between pupil and teacher – in mistakes, questions, and those light bulb flashes of understanding. Our collective responsibility as educators and parents is to make sure, we use AI to unlock children’s potential, not limit it.

Understanding Financial Value
Head of Economics, Graeme McSherry, explains how MGS instils sound financial sense in its pupils. The study of economics plays an essential role in the formulation of knowledge and helps pupils better understand how society functions. Through studying Economics at MGS, pupils learn how to model resource allocation in individual markets and analyse the performance of national economies. To understand the workings of modern markets and economies, pupils investigate the role of financial markets in terms of facilitating saving and lending to both individuals and firms. Pupils go on to deepen their understanding of finance through studying forward markets in currencies and commodities, as well as looking into market failure in the financial sector. We investigate issues arising from asymmetric information, market rigging, as well as speculation and

We also explore the significance of the government running a deficit and the impact this has on the national debt and future interest payments. Pupils go on to consider why the size of fiscal deficits and national debts matters, analysing their implications for economic stability, future taxation, public services, and the sustainability of government finances. Through studying economics, pupils develop analytical and quantitative skills, allowing them to better understand the modern world and appreciate the challenges faced by governments in enhancing material wellbeing. Dream Factory
Year 5 Junior School pupils at MGS staged two evening performances of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Junior, a vibrant adaptation of Roald Dahl’s much-loved classic. The world of Wonka was brought to life as the young cast took to the stage in full costume before audiences of friends, family, and supporters from across the MGS community. Ahead of the evening shows, the pupils also presented a special matinee performance to years 3, 4, and 6, offering a final opportunity to rehearse before opening night. The production proved a delightful celebration of imagination, music, and the enduring magic of Wonka’s world.

market bubbles. Pupils investigate the role of central banks specifically in implementing monetary policy and providing regulation of the banking industry. We also develop an understanding of taxation and public sector finances. The importance of taxation is studied through the impact progressive taxation has on the distribution of income and incentive to work. Pupils learn to distinguish between automatic stabilisers – taxes and welfare payments that adjust automatically with economic activity – and discretionary fiscal policy, which involves deliberate government decisions to change spending or taxation. These government policies impact personal finances and wellbeing while also helping to achieve the government’s macroeconomic objectives.

New Jewish Culture Month
Elaine’s Girls
JLife contributor Elaine Bermitz had set up a ladies’ discussion group before she sadly passed away recently. The group, which meets twice a month at the Maccabi Centre, has been renamed ‘Elaine’s Girl’s Discussion Group’ in her memory. The wooden spoon being held in the picture is ‘Elaine’s spoon of speech’ which is passed around when a member wants to make a contribution. Mandy Leigh, one of the group’s members, said: “We were all delighted to see Richard [Elaine’s husband] at our group meeting and really appreciated his kind words and gift of cakes. We all miss Elaine greatly but will be carrying on our regular current affairs discussions in her honour – she was a true inspiration to us all.”
Prestwich Regeneration
Mayor Andy Burnham has announced funding for Prestwich as part of the city’s ‘Good Growth Fund’ – a £1 billion investment into 30 projects across the Greater Manchester region. The £6.8 million pledged for the town will be used to redevelop the Longfield Centre site by demolishing unused buildings. The market hall and retail spaces will be built in their place, and the cash will also be used to support the ongoing development of the new 300-space Prestwich Travel Hub car park. Other projects – which will receive funds in March next year – will work towards the creation of 235 new homes.
The Board of Deputies has announced a new national initiative with the launch of Jewish Culture Month, a UK-wide festival designed to celebrate the breadth and vibrancy of Jewish life. The first edition will run during the Jewish month of Sivan – 16th May to 15th June 2026. The festival is intended to provide an upbeat, unifying celebration of Jewish creativity and contribution. Jewish Culture Month will spotlight the work of major Jewish cultural institutions, encourage wider British cultural organisations and schools to engage with Jewish heritage, and support local community centres to open their doors to visitors. The initiative will also highlight Jewish figures in public life and foreground the positive impact the community has had on the nation.
Progressive Judaism Movement
The newly formed Movement for Progressive Judaism (MPJ) has launched with a £2.2 million fundraising boost, marking one of the most significant structural shifts in British Jewish life in decades. More than 350 supporters gathered for the movement’s inaugural dinner, celebrating the formal coming together of Liberal Judaism and the Movement for Reform Judaism ahead of the merger taking effect early 2026. During the appeal, MPJ Chair Dr Ed Kessler MBE announced that the unification process had already attracted £1.75 million in early major gifts, including several six-figure donations and a significant multi-year seven-figure commitment. A further £450,000 was pledged on the night, bringing the total to £2.2 million.
Holocaust Centre North’s New Digital Galleries
Holocaust Centre North has recently launched a new online collections browser, enabling people to explore parts of its archive remotely for the first time. Alongside the searchable browser, the platform also features three new curated digital galleries which are designed to guide visitors through themed selections of digitised photographs, documents, and artefacts and offer structured entry points into the archive for those who want to discover new stories. The new collections include materials from the Bradford Jewish Refugee Hostel, a selection of precious personal belongings brought by survivors, and a dedicated gallery exploring the experiences of child refugees who escaped Nazi Europe to begin new lives in Britain.
New Online Archive
A recent development at The Wiener Holocaust Library in London has been the launch of its new digital archive. The Wiener Holocaust Library is the world’s oldest and Britain’s largest collection of original archival material on pre-war Jewish life, the Nazi era, and the Holocaust. The organisation has put significant portions of its collection online so you can now search and see the actual images that may be of interest. The platform provides free access to documents, photos, press cuttings, unpublished manuscripts and memoirs, and transcripts of thousands of pages. Whlcollections.org
