With autumn well and truly falling and the festival season coming to an end, it’s time to snuggle up, stay warm and check out our latest edition. And we’ve got lots of great features to warm the cockles, from our Autumn Homestyle and Simchat Torah tipples, to a review of the recent Chapel Allerton Arts Festival in our “village” focus, including a tasty giveaway from Sukhothai.

Talking of festivals, we chatted with Martin Dickson, the director of LIFI, Leeds International Festival of Ideas, a largely under

the radar event with some amazing speakers and caught up with Nick Wayne on Leeds 2023 as it draws to a close. Our resident reviewer Rick visited New Inn Eccup for a taster menu from top chef James Key, and we find out about a revolutionising migraine treatment from an Israeli bio-tech co.

But the best way to stay warm is by jetting off to some sunnier climes, we check out some destinations with a difference.

60 Year School Reunion

Around 40 former students of Roundhay Grammar and Roundhay High returned to Old Park Road, at what is now Roundhay School, for a reunion weekend. The pupils, some of whom travelled from as far as Israel, reminisced on their time at the boy and girls’ schools while enjoying refreshments and music from their past.

The event was organised by Irvin Gale, former rugby player, who gathered his old classmates over Facebook, all of whom attended the school from 1963 to 1970. The day of the reunion marked 60 years to the day after the cohort first walked through the gates of the school.

LJFS Congratulates GCSE Students

Staff at Leeds Jewish Free School recently expressed their pride for this year’s GCSE students following their results day. This year’s students worked under especially difficult circumstances as the COVID-19 pandemic affected their learning and development prior to the big exams.

Susy Hardacre, Executive Headteacher at LJFS said: “We are so proud of our students who did their best in a difficult year. We wish every one of our LJFS graduates all the very best of wishes for the future.”

Six pupils at The Grammar School in Leeds received a complete set of grade 9s in 10 subjects – the highest possible result – and an additional 43 students achieved 10 grade 8s and 9s. 70% of all entrants were awarded the top grades ranging from seven to nine and more than half received a grade 8 or above.

US Couple Ready to Transform CKids

American Rabbi Sholem Kalmenson and his wife Devorah Leah have arrived in Leeds raring to go and take on the role of CKids shluchim.

Sholem Kalmenson was brought up in New York where he met his wife Devorah, who was from Vilnius, Lithuania and was in New York to pursue her studies. The couple have been married for 18 years and have a two-month-old son, Mendel.

The pair will be hosting a packed schedule of activities for children and young people which include after-school clubs and mini camps. Rabbi Kalmenson said: “We are excited to be in Leeds and look forward to helping devise an amazing programme of activities for the Jewish kids of the community.”

Burrow Documentary Shortlisted for an NTA

The documentary about the life of a former Leeds Rhinos player after his Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis was recently shortlisted for a National Television Award.

Rob Burrow: Living with MND is a 30-minute documentary style film which aired in October last year, the film showed how impactful Rob’s MND diagnosis has been to his and his family’s life.

Lindsey Burrow, Rob’s wife and a Physiotherapist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, recently spoke out about how it felt to invite the cameras into their family home: “Rob wanted to show that MND affects the whole family. I think the documentary has done that – and the outpouring of love for Rob has been incredible. It has inspired people in many ways and given them hope.

“Despite the devastating diagnosis, I think you can take a lot of positives from the film. It’s about never giving in. We all pull together to make the most of life. The documentary shows the brutality of the disease, but it also shows how positive Rob is. He is such a tower of strength for the family.”

Smart Works Leeds Hosts Ball and Awards

Smart Works Leeds, a charity which coaches and dresses unemployed women to set them up for interview and job success, is holding a fundraising ball and awards ceremony in November.

The very first Fashion as a Force for Good Ball will take place on 15th November at The Marriott Leeds. The organisers have made it known that it will be a glamorous occasion celebrating the best of Yorkshire fashion and that guests should dress in an occasion outfit which makes them feel fabulous and confident.

Smart Works Leeds Co-Chair of Trustees Tracy Fletcher said: “We invite you to wear that outfit you never thought you would, that has perhaps been stored in your wardrobe for too long, or it might be a favourite piece that reminds you of a wonderful time.”

The ball will also host eight awards, four for companies and individuals who have supported Smart Works Leeds, and four which celebrate the Yorkshire fashion community these include: Force for Good Indie of the Year, Force for Good Retail Team of the Year, Force for Good Emerging Designer of the Year, and Force for Good Influencer of the Year.

Number of Jewish Pupils On The Up

The number of pupils attending Jewish schools could reach 40,000 in just a few years, largely due to the expanding number of charedi pupils.

A new factsheet by the Institute for Jewish Policy has delved in to Jewish education across Europe and found that one of the main motives for parents to register their child to a Jewish school is a desire for them to develop a strong Jewish identity. Another leading reason is the desire for children to have friends with similar values.

CHIPS OFF THE OLD BLOCK

Milim recently premiered its play Meet Me at Cantors, exploring the Jewish narrative behind Leeds’ shopfronts and what has become of them.

Meet Me At Cantors is a new play by Anthony Clavane and Mike Levy which recently had its premiere. It provides a glimpse into the social and cultural life of the Jewish community in 1950s Leeds and is based on real stories and oral histories from members of the community who lived during that time which adds depth and authenticity to the narrative.

The choice of using a fish and chip shop as a focal point is fitting, Cantors was a renown central gathering place for the community. The location on Chapeltown Road, close to the New Synagogue (now the Northern School of Contemporary Dance) where the first performances took place, adds historical significance to the setting. It’s a testament to the changing demographics and patterns that the shop is still there but no longer under Jewish ownership, reflecting the evolution of the neighbourhood.

The play offers a nostalgic and sentimental look back at a bygone era, celebrating the lives and experiences of the Jewish community in Leeds during that time. It serves as a valuable piece of cultural history and storytelling for both the Jewish community and the broader audience. The

play covers a wide range of topics, including reminiscing about old shops, work life, social mobility, trips to Blackpool, as well as the challenges of prejudice and lost loves. Despite these diverse themes, the common thread is always Cantors.

Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, it is one of the Hidden Stories that have been produced as part of Leeds 2023, the city’s year of culture. Due to limited rehearsal time, the cast had the script as an aidememoire. This added an interesting layer to the performance, emphasizing the fragility of memories.

Speaking at the end of the second performance, Philippa Lester, one of the founding directors of Milim the organisation behind the project described how oral histories and lived experiences were the basis of the book From the Leylands to Leeds 17 which she had co-

authored with the late Diane Saunders which in turn led to the creation of Milim. She went on to say how proud Diane would have been of the play, a sentiment met with applause from the near sell-out audience.

Concluding the evening and acknowledging the contributions made by everyone involved in the project Alan Benstock, the Milim director, expressed the intention of Milim to continue collecting oral histories to create an archive of lived experiences for future generations as it reflects a commitment to preserving cultural heritage.

The idea of winter in Europe might conjure images of snow-capped mountains and mulled wine at Christmas markets, but the reality often involves biting wind, and rain. Fortunately, you don’t need to venture far to find mild temperatures and a plethora of exciting adventures to satisfy the keenest history buffs, foodies, fitness fanatics and TV aficionados. Enjoy!

Athens in Winter: an historical odyssey

Winter in Athens offers a unique opportunity for history enthusiasts to embark on a captivating journey through time without the bustling crowds and scorching temperatures of summer. Start your historical expedition with a visit to the crown jewel of Athens – the Acropolis. In the crisp winter air, the ancient citadel reveals its secrets with unparalleled clarity. As you ascend the sacred hill, you’ll be greeted by iconic landmarks like the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, all standing proud against a backdrop of clear blue skies. Immerse yourself in the treasures of the National Archaeological Museum which houses an extensive collection of artifacts, sculptures and relics from Greece’s illustrious past. Another spot worth checking out is the Ancient Agora, the heart of ancient Athens, where philosophers once gathered to ponder life’s mysteries. While the rest of Europe may be bundled up, this still mild Portuguese archipelago offers the perfect playground for hiking enthusiasts. Begin your adventure by exploring the famed Levada trails. These

centuries-old irrigation channels crisscross the island, creating a network of picturesque trails. In winter, these routes are adorned with vibrant flora and glistening waterfalls. Next conquer the island’s highest peak, Pico Ruivo, as it stands majestically at 1,861m (6,108 ft.) above sea level. During the winter months, you’ll encounter a unique spectacle as the summit is occasionally dusted with snow, contrasting beautifully

don’t overlook the trails that begin right in Funchal. Head to the city’s outskirts and embark on hikes that lead you to panoramic viewpoints like Boca do Risco, where you can witness the dramatic meeting of land and sea.

Rejuvenate your spirit in Seville

The winter sun casts long shadows over the dramatic cliffs, creating an otherworldly atmosphere for intrepid hikers. Embrace the tranquillity of Rabaçal and embark on the 25 Fontes Trail, revelling in the awe-inspiring beauty of the 25 cascading waterfalls that give the trail its name. A quick work of advice:

TRUE GRIT

Councillor for Alwoodley, Dan Cohen, talks cold weather, parking, and teases on some upcoming events.

It hardly seems credible, but winter is nearly upon us and long winter nights with cold and frosty mornings will be upon us sooner than we might wish.

Cold nights can often lead to icy roads in the morning. Now is a great time to check if the blue grit bin nearest to you needs refilling. If it does, please let your local grit champion know – and if you’re not sure who this is – feel free to let me know.

You may find the bin isn’t empty, but full of a solid crystallised block of rock salt. If this is the case, the very best advice is to take a strong shovel, take all your frustration on the block of salt and break it up. Even if it only breaks up a bit – you’ll definitely warm yourself up and burn off a few calories too.

Another way we recently warmed ourselves up last month was at the Alwoodley Community Association’s recent Whisky Tasting Event. Big thanks to everyone who came along to the event, which I hope they enjoyed. It was a really good reminder of what an amazing local asset the ACA is. With a very modest membership fee, it really is worth joining to enjoy its facilities.

Schools are now very much back in action, I remind all those who drop off their children at school in the mornings, along with

those who pick up in the afternoons, to please take every care to park not just legally but also considerately.

I spend time visiting all of our local schools at pick up and drop off times (sometimes, with officers from the councils parking enforcement team). While the vast majority of cars are parked absolutely fine – some are truly shocking, blocking pavements, parking across drives, and even on yellow lines.

Considerate parking makes such a difference to everybody’s state of mind, and I really do urge everyone to help ensure this is the only kind of parking we see in our ward.

Finally for this month I hope to have two major announcements in the coming weeks. One around Santa’s much hoped for visit to Alwoodley in December and another around the future of Treetops Community Centre. You will be able to hear these announcements as soon as I have them on the Alwoodley Ward Residents Facebook Group and of course, right here in the next edition of our very own JLife.

Do remember for any and all local issues Neil, Lyn and I are always available to help.

Matchmaking | Everyman Leeds |

16th November | 6.45pm

Thursday

On the face of it, young yeshiva bocher Moti and his little sister’s best friend Nehami are the perfect match – they share the same values, have known each other for years, and most importantly, they are in love. There is just one little problem: Moti (Amit Rahav, Unorthodox) is Ashkenazi and Nehami is Sephardi, and in the ultra-Orthodox city in which they live, such a shidduch is strictly prohibited. Going against the wishes of his meddling parents and a nosy matchmaker, Moti comes up with a genius if risky plan to marry Nehami. Inspired by classic Bourekas comedies, Erez Tadmor’s (A Matter of Size, The Art of Waiting) new film is a sharp, hilarious critique of the business of love and marriage in the Haredi community.

Wednesday 22nd November | 6.15pm

Israel, 1950s. British newlyweds Fay and Reginald Morris visit Eilat, the country’s southernmost city, and instantly fall in love with the place. They decide to settle there and integrate fully into their new community while maintaining their English way of life. Over the next decades, Reginald, a beloved medical doctor, would obsessively document the life of his family with an 8mm camera – capturing precious moments of unalloyed joy alongside others of profound sadness and loss. Based on Reginald’s home movies and narrated by Fay and her children, this intimate documentary is a celebration of family love and a fascinating record of Israel in its early years.

The Devils’ Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes (Dir. Yariv Mozer) | Everyman Leeds |

Thursday 23rd November | 6.15pm

At his trial in 1961, Adolf Eichmann tried to cut a petty-minded, bureaucratic figure. His intention was to come across as an uncharismatic clerk who merely followed orders, and to downplay his role in managing the mass deportation of Jews. But only four year earlier, feeling increasingly secure in his adoptive country of Argentina, Eichmann spoke freely and boastfully – in a series

of taped conversations with Dutch Nazi journalist Willem Sassen – of the idealistic fervour that made him excel at his job, and his deep regret about not sending many more millions of Jews to their deaths. The transcripts of the recordings played a crucial part in Eichmann’s trial but the whereabouts of the tapes remained unknown for years. This fascinating documentary unearths the recordings and sheds light on the realpolitik considerations that may have contributed to their disappearance.

PLANS

Juliet Shenderey, Owner of Shenderey Event, offers some advice on planning events abroad.

As summer comes to a close and we approach autumn and winter, more and more clients are now considering planning their events abroad. Be it a wedding, birthday, Bar/Bat Mitzvah or corporate event; here is a list of dos and don’ts for planning your destination event.

Don’t

• Forget legal paperwork – this is especially relevant for weddings. Every country has its own requirements. Some countries require you to be ‘resident’ in the country for a certain time before being legally allowed to marry.

• Forget to ensure you get everything in writing before you pay any bills.

create a truly unique, event from start to finish.

• Be taken in by very cheap deals. Although it’s often cheaper to have an event abroad, make sure you know what is included in your package and what extras will need to be paid for.

Do

• Decide your budget and who is paying what. Will you be paying for guest accommodation and flights or expect them to pay for themselves? Will you be paying for all meals during the event weekend?

• Really think about your location before deciding. A beach wedding in Mauritius may be your idea of a dream wedding but will the travel costs and time mean many

of your guests won’t be able to share your day with you.

• Visit before you book – especially at the time of year you want your event. Check out the weather, activities, light and accommodation for your guests. After all you would never book a venue at home before visiting!

• Use an Event Planner who is an expert at enabling you to have the dream event. Here at Shenderey Events we have years of experience of creating perfect events throughout the UK and worldwide.

Get Curly!

Heatless curls are a great way to get curly hair without using straighteners or a curling iron. Instead of using heat, you sleep with slightly damp hair rolled up so when the hair dries it will take the shape of your desired curling method. Depending on what you choose to curl your hair with, how tightly you wrap it, and your hair length, you will achieve a tight or loose curl. As with any new style, practice makes perfect so try different methods to find the style that works best for you.

Before you start

Make sure your hair isn’t wet, it should be damp to the touch and feel 95% dry. If your hair is too wet the curls wont take hold and will drop out faster. If you struggle to know whether your hair is too dry or too damp after washing, then try using water in a misting bottle on dry hair so you can control how much water you’re using. If you have pin straight hair which struggles to hold a curl, try using a curl mousse on your hair before rolling or a setting lotion mixed in with your water to dampen your hair.

Dressing gown belt

The one that started it all on social media, the dressing gown belt. There are silk ropes made to mimic that classic Tik Tok method, so you don’t have to steal your dressing gown

belt whenever you want a new do. With this rope you can curl your hair while you sleep, it will only take under 30 minutes the night before, and the silky material will keep your hair from frizz and damage while its damp.

Silicone wraps

With some simple silicone wraps from Primark, you won’t have to use any heat and still achieve that bouncy curl. Just use the rod to push your hair through the silicone covering and once it dries it’ll take its shape!

Foam rollers

Let’s go vintage! If you want to achieve a tight vintage hairstyle the best way to achieve this is to use foam rollers or pin curls, both work in a similar way. To use foam rollers, make sure your hair has some kind of setting lotion/curling mousse in it to keep the waves after thoroughly brushing. Keep your

hair flat like a ribbon and making sure not to twist the strands. This is very important for the ends, if they poke out of your roller or aren’t flat, they will frizz and look frayed.

Pin curls

Pin curls work the same way as rollers but instead of using a roller you use your fingers! For extra comfort and vintage vibes wrap your head in a silk scarf to prevent accidentally catching the pins as

THE BEE’S KNEES

Arthritis of the knee currently affects approximately 8.5 million people in the UK, with one in five adults over 45 years old having symptoms that affect their daily life. These symptoms can range from intermittent discomfort and an occasional knee swelling at lower intensities, to constant pain with marked joint deformity, stiffness, instability, and resultant falls at higher intensities. So how does one know if the early symptoms of possible knee arthritis need treatment? Is there anything that can be done to prevent or slow down progression of knee arthritis? What are the latest treatment developments?

Many people will experience knee pain at some time of their lives, and while most will see things resolve without the need for a diagnosis, a significant number will develop longer term “niggles” that may become bothersome enough to stop activities such as walking, tennis, golf, skiing, and hiking. If you are one of these unfortunate souls who have been putting off seeing a specialist, either because of worry about what’s going on, or concern that your “niggle” just isn’t severe enough, or even if you’ve just not had the time to make the appointment, now is the time to get some answers and your knee diagnosis completed.

An expert assessment of your knee combined with some simple X-rays and

scans can reveal in great detail the overall health of your knee joint and will also allow a personalised discussion about what treatments are suitable for your needs. Not all people with knee niggles require interventional or surgical treatment, but if they do, then a number of options can be discussed, from “keyhole” surgery for minor issues up to knee replacement for established arthritis. For individuals who only have arthritis affecting one of the three knee compartments, then most would be suitable for a partial knee replacement. Hospital stays are typically very short (usually one night) or even day case. The outcomes of partial knee replacement are excellent, patients often experience a quicker return to normal function and can also participate in most sports and activities when rehabilitation is complete.

If you wish to know more, or have your knee niggles diagnosed, please contact me via my website, Leedskneeclinic.com, alternatively, email me via owenrwall@ leedskneeclinic.com

According to Sport England, some 15.5 million people now play sport at least once a week. Whatever your chosen sport or level, wearing the best form of vision correction can help you achieve the best possible performance and enjoyment.

Elite athletes often have high visual demands and there is some evidence that optimal vision correction can enhance sporting performance, even with very low levels of short and long sight. Correcting small amounts of astigmatism, or short or long sight in one eye, may also be beneficial.

When choosing the best type of contact lenses for sport, many factors need to be taken into account, including the length of time it takes to play, the environment and physical

OPTICAL

Contact Lenses For Sport

demands, such as body contact and extreme eye and body movements.

Soft lenses are generally considered best for sport as they move less on the eye than rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses and are less likely to be dislodged. RGP lenses are not suitable for contact sports, such as rugby. For sports that are particularly dynamic, such as tennis, the extra stability of soft lenses is also advisable. Daily disposable soft lenses offer many advantages. Some sports are played in dirty environments with potential for lens contamination and handling problems.

Daily disposables are discarded after each use and are particularly suited to part-time wear. They’re also convenient, as cleaning solutions are not needed. If re-usable lenses rather than daily disposables are worn but not used every day, don’t forget they need to be cleaned and disinfected after each use.

For endurance events and in environments where lens handling is impractical, lenses approved for extended or flexible wear may be advised, in which case highly oxygen-permeable silicone hydrogel lenses should be worn.

Sport is often a factor in the choice to opt for refractive surgery. As with any choice of vision correction, it’s important to consider the pros and cons and to discuss these with your eyecare practitioner. Potential concerns for the athlete are dry eye symptoms, visual disturbances (glare and haloes) and complications from trauma.

Your practitioner can also advise you on any regulations governing your sport. In some sports, such as rugby, glasses are not allowed and in others, such as amateur boxing, neither glasses nor contact lenses can be worn. In karate, soft lenses are the only contact lenses of choice. Protective eyewear is also either mandatory or recommended for some sports, such as squash. Remember that you should not use contact lenses for swimming or water sports unless you wear tight-fitting goggles over the top and ultimately the lenses should be immediately discarded after the activity.

Ask your eyecare practitioner to help you decide which type of contact lenses is best suited to your sport and lifestyle.

By Julian offers construction expertise that you really shouldn’t do without whenever you’re thinking about making any changes to your home. Expert Civil and Structural Engineer Julian Carter offers a range of services which allow you to ensure that any project you want to undertake is up to code, as he explains: “We undertake surveys, which can be an overused word. What that means is that we’ll go into a house and examine it to understand, first of all, how it’s made, and then secondly, how it’s behaving. Once we understand that we can start looking at remedies to any problem.

“We also do design work. The important bit there is that we understand the form for the structure, which educates us as to how to change it. This is an aspect in which architects are often not as good as they could be, because their training is different.

“And then finally, the surveying sometimes involves us doing expert reports and expert witness work. That’s for things like court cases, if you’re taking somebody to court over a disagreement which can’t be settled amicably.”

Julian has been working as a Civil Engineer since 1991 and has many a feather in his cap, including a fellowship with the Institute of Civil Engineers, many high-profile contracts,

Tried and Tested

We sit down with Julian Carter, Structural Engineer and Owner of By Julian, to discuss the need for engineering advice on a building project.

and projects all over the world: “I did Civil Engineering as a degree because what I wanted to do, didn’t exist as a degree at the time. I wanted to do Disaster Management, and I have since given lectures in that subject at Teesside and Coventry. I joined a charity, the Register of Engineers for Disaster Relief. Since then, I’ve working in places like Algeria, Bosnia, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe, where I’ve worked with communities to alleviate suffering.”

With such an impressive list of accolades behind him, it would be a good idea to consult Julian before undertaking any project: “Builders always have their own way of doing things, and there’s always more than one way. The difficulty for people is that even when they get a very good builder, once they’ve discussed their project with them, the good builder will then say: ‘That’s great, but I will do what a structural engineer has told me.’”

One of the aspects of his job that Julian always makes sure to give the proper amount of focus, is the personal side of the project: “Generally, you’re going into somebody’s very personal space, and even with commercial spaces that can be the same with some people.

It’s their livelihood after all. But more so with personal space. Eight times out of 10 there are people apologising for the things that are in their space, but as I tell them, in an hour when I’ve left the property, I won’t remember their stuff, because I’m not there to record that. And for some people, that’s quite a stress reliever. It’s important to remember that you’re going into people’s inner sanctums.”

robust. A healthy influx of new properties on the market has been met with sufficient demand, resulting in sales levels that match our historical figures for well-priced properties. Nevertheless, it’s undeniable that house prices have undergone some adjustment, currently resting around 5% to 6% lower than they were a year ago across our region.

As we transition into what is often dubbed the “second surge” of the year, now that the kids have returned to school and people are back to work post-summer breaks, predicting the property market’s future remains a challenge. However, there are several positive indicators. Sustained buyer demand, accessible mortgage options, and a persistent housing shortage will all

ANTIQUES

Classy

Chassis

With Gary Don, your antiques expert and Auctioneer

I have heard some devastating news in my lifetime of antiques. I have seen fortunes come and go by hanging onto items and not selling sooner, but nothing prepared me for the news this month. The Volvo estate car is not going to be made anymore after 70 years of incredible service in our antique industry!

I remember my first workhorse was a Triumph Herald estate with a customised roof rack. It had a Mickey Mouse sticker on, a gadget that made the exhaust sound like a racing car, and of course Go Faster stripes. I could get a three-piece bedroom suite on the top of it and fill the contents with gold, silver and china. It was years later before I

could afford my first second hand Volvo. The Volvo Estate changed everything. It was the first car that could fit a grandfather clock inside. It was an Industrial Revolution for us antique dealers. I remember paying £180 (a tremendous amount) to have a full-length roof rack built up at the sides to tie down the load. The record for house contents on my roof rack was three-bedroom suites, an upside-down dining table & two washstands surrounded by six chairs! Inside was the grandfather clock and boxes of china and bric-a-brac, jewellery, and silver. It was possible to move a complete houseful in two trips. Not being blessed as one of the tallest I needed a ladder to reach the top and lots of blankets and ropes, finally covered in waterproof covering. From time to time the police would pull me over to check my roping. I never had any problem and thank my brief appearance as a Cub Scout for that!

help to keep any potential price crash (as some might predict) as a highly unlikely occurrence. All of this marks a reassuring contrast to the uncertainties that followed last year’s disastrous budget announcement which thrust the property market and the wider economy into a relative tailspin.

Additionally, we find optimism in the recent statement from the Bank of England, indicating that interest rates may have “reached their peak,” and signs of inflation coming under control. These developments bode well for the market, and we anticipate prices stabilizing as we approach the year’s end.

Manningstainton.co.uk

The most famous antique dealer to drive a Volvo was Lovejoy in the TV series. He didn’t do a lot for our industry, but he certainly was responsible for huge sales at Volvo.

I have just purchased the latest and last model to be made of a Volvo estate (no roof rack). It is not as long or as wide as the originals, no room inside for a grandfather clock. My team now picks items up in an expensive new van with so many regulations for moving items. The cost of this is astronomical compared to the old days!

Is this progress I wonder? Goodbye dear Volvo, you will be greatly missed!

Electric Charge

Electric vehicles (EVs) are paving the way to a more sustainable future of transportation and with the looming 2030 ban on buying new petrol and diesel cars its important to stay informed on the advances in EVs. The London to Paris EV rally disproves the biggest concern about EVs, that the range just isn’t there yet.

The inaugural London to Paris EV rally concluded with remarkable success after 100 electric vehicles – including self-builds, Teslas, hydrogen cars, buses, and more –embarked on an exhilarating journey from London to Paris. The event, founded by EV enthusiast Bill Murray (no, not that Bill Murray) marked the first large-scale international rally of its kind, showcasing the astonishing potential of electric vehicles.

Spanning the distance between two iconic European capitals, the rally captivated participants and spectators alike, leaving an enduring mark on the global EV community. With a focus on combating range anxiety, the rally aimed to demonstrate the accessibility, diversity, and limitless possibilities of EVs.

Teams were free to choose their own routes and challenged to make the journey using as little energy as possible with awards given for the most efficient vehicles in each category. There were eight categories, including self-built vehicles and, for the first time, a Hydrogen Fuel Cell category.

Vehicle efficiencies were recorded either directly from the vehicle's own mile/kWh report, or by a calculation based on the vehicle's start and finish status reports and charging records.

The route commenced in Westminster,

London, before reaching the mid stop in Brighton. Upon reaching Brighton, participants and visitors were treated to the vibrant atmosphere of the e-Village, a hub of excitement and innovation. Attendees had the opportunity to explore stands from the race’s sponsors and partners, including BYD, Hendy, Motability, Tesla, and more. They could enjoy live music, test drive vehicles, and even experience the thrill of riding electric bikes and scooters.

The second stage took participants from Brighton to Paris via Newhaven and Dieppe, covering a total distance of 170 miles. The unique route design of the London to Paris EV rally made it easier for participants to get involved without undertaking excessively long and tiring journeys, setting it apart from other events.

Serving as a beacon of hope and inspiration for the world, the event showcases how we can all embrace the electrified future of transportation, demonstrating the diversity and accessibility of

electric vehicles but also reinforcing the collective determination to drive towards a greener, more sustainable world.

KICKIN’ ALL OVER THE WORLD

Leeds’ own Ari-el Aibi travelled to America on behalf of the UK to compete at the JCC Maccabi Games, an Olympic-style event for more than 1,500 Jewish teens from all over the world.

Ari-el (Moosh) Aibi was chosen to represent the UK at this year’s JCC Maccabi Games in Fort Lauderdale, USA. The 15-year-old was the only person from Leeds to be chosen in the under 16’s squad, making it even more special. Trials were held in Manchester and London before making the trip to America in August.

Moosh has shown dedication and commitment, completing sponsored 5k runs and activities on his GoFundMe page to raise £1,600 of the £3,600 needed for the trip completely by himself. In Fort

Lauderdale the team was housed and hosted by Jewish families before the momentous knockout tournament they had travelled for.

The team successfully went home with the bronze trophy and made their way onto the podium during the closing ceremony. Moosh, having made friends all over England from his time in America, is looking forward to seeing if he can be selected in October for the next European Games which will be held in London next year.

LEADING LADIES

In a world that’s increasingly demanding, there’s a growing desire for women to carve out time for themselves – to unite, feel empowered, and make a positive impact on their communities. Enter Women Leading The Way (WLTW); a new initiative under the WIZO umbrella, geared towards a younger generation. The aim is a threepronged approach of personal growth, community engagement, while fundraising for vulnerable families in Israel.

This forward-looking collective launched recently with an inspiring workshop led by personal coach Jen Walper Roberts of Conspire Coaching. The workshop provided a platform for attendees to explore priorities and plan for their next chapter.

At its core, WLTW aims to create a network and volunteering collective that offers women the opportunity to enhance their own lives while giving back both here in Leeds and in Israel. It’s a win-win-win situation. The networking events will focus

on self-development and collaborating on issues that resonate with women.

As for the volunteering aspect, WLTW will make an impact by working on projects with local organisations and building on the bonds formed during events. These projects are designed to be completed in just a few hours, making it easier for busy women to make a meaningful difference in their community.

WIZO, the charity behind WLTW, has a rich history of championing women’s rights in Israel. It has played a pivotal role in legislative changes, such as advocating for equal pay and a law which requires violent men to undergo therapy. Its Safety Net

programme provides support and empowers women fleeing domestic abuse to become confident and independent as they start a new life.

WIZO was established in 1918 by pioneering women, most notably Leedsborn Rebecca Sieff, and WLTW hopes to carry forward their legacy by replicating the ethos and spirit of those women here in Leeds for the next generation.

working at an electrical engineering company, working on semiconductor chips in mobile phones. When their project came to an end, with the encouragement of global leading migraine specialist Professor David Yarnitsky, they decided to use their expertise to tackle the world’s leading cause of disability, migraines. COO Ronen Jashek, tells us about the non-invasive migraine device, Nerivio.

Hello Ronen! So how does Nerivio work to combat migraines?

Hi! So, the Nerivio wraps around the upper arm and uses the technology we developed called Remote Electrical Neuromodulation to activate nociceptive nerve fibres in the arm to send signals to the brain which trigger a mechanism in the brain called conditioned pain modulation. Conditioned pain modulation is a very strong, pain inhibition mechanism in the part of the pain regulation centre in the brainstem, by externally stimulating this we can turn off migraine pain and other symptoms without medication.

In simple terms, the upper arm is stimulated to unleash a natural process in the brain to relieve migraine headache and other associated symptoms. Each treatment is controlled by a smartphone app and is selfadministered lasting 45 minutes every other

Head Liners

Revolutionising migraine treatments, we spoke to Ronen Jashek from Israeli bio-tech company Theranica about how Nerivio could be your next lifesaver.

day for prevention, or it can be used at the start of a migraine attack to ease the pain.

What does the device feel like to use?

I would describe the sensation as close to something like a tingling on your skin, like you have little ants walking on your arm. The device doesn't apply pressure or break the skin, it just applies electrical stimulation, or neuro modulation as we call it. Obviously beyond a certain level, it can be painful, but the patient can control the intensity level themselves on the app. What we tell patients is: “Increase the intensity up to the point that it starts feeling a little bit uncomfortable and then just take it down a notch or two.” We’ve found after more than almost half a million treatments in the US, that these simple instructions are very effective.

And what’s good about the app working with the device is that everything that the patient does inside the app is logged and recorded automatically into a migraine diary. Migraine is a very complex disease which has many triggers, patients are often asked to diarise their migraines so their doctor can monitor their triggers, and the app does this. We ask the patients questions and record their treatment sessions, which, once you start using the product regularly, will start to build your own migraine diary which you can

When will the Nerivio be available in the UK?

I can tell you that we are now very close to launching in Europe. Definitely in 2024, and the UK will be a part of that launch. How the product will be accessible is dependent on our partners but there’s a good chance that it will follow the steps of the US release.

In the US Nerivio tends to be prescribed but depending on the local authorities and regulation, it may also be available over the counter. You can go either to your physician and tell them that you want it, or, through telemedicine or telehealth which is becoming more popular. So, a patient can go online, get a consultation, and after about 20 minutes, they can get their prescription and the device is shipped to their home.

BUSINESS INTERVIEW

DOWN TO BUSINESS

A round up of the latest local business and UK Israel trade news.

Smart Headband Helps Blind Swimmers

Israeli startup EyeCan is developing the smart headband, which alerts swimmers in real time whenever they are approaching an obstacle in the water or if they are leaving their lane.

The device is equipped with a camera that continuously scans the bottom of the pool and the area in front of the swimmer. This data is then sent to the “brain” of the headband, a processor located at the back of the device, which dispatches alerts to two chips located on either side of the swimmer’s head.

The chips use bone conduction, which sends sounds to the inner ear through the bones of the skull without having to block the ear itself.

Blockbuster Films Used to Teach Students

Israeli startup AcadeMe+ has created a study platform which turns films from major film studios – such as Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Disney, and Sony – into interactive lessons. Though especially helpful for younger children to begin visualising new concepts, AcadeMe+ has lessons that are appropriate for a range of ages reaching up to college and key stage 12 students.

The startup has partnered with US-based educational nonprofit Journeys in Film to curate its lesson plans. Journeys in Film is an organisation with a self-described mission to educate the next generation to be globally competent and socially active by amplifying the storytelling power of film, making the two organisations a perfect fit.

AcadeMe+ utilises an AI search facility which helps teachers find lesson plans with appropriate resources which also align with their curriculum. A demonstration of the platform provides an example with the film Wonder, a story about a child with a facial deformity, the film pauses for a moment to ask the children a prompt to discuss in the lesson: “Think about an event that made you feel different or judged by appearance. Describe this event.” Children can then openly share their experiences having seen the example.

Scanner Detects Cancerous Cells in Surgery

As a result of his several cancer treatments, Dov Cohen created a handheld device which tracks traces of cancer cells in real time during surgery. Several cancer patients must go through repeat operations to remove tumour cells, endangering their lives sometimes without achieving the desired result of the surgery – Dov’s aim is to improve this life-threatening process.

In 2019 Cohen co-founded the startup NuTek to start developing the Rainbow Probe handheld scanner allowing surgeons to detect in real time whether there are any remaining cancerous tissues. The probe uses hyperspectral imaging technology which sheds light on the body part under operation. Cohen explains that different tissue reacts differently to light, therefore analysing the reflected light will reveal the remains of tumours.

In 2020 NuTek was selected to win a grant of £100,000 from the Merage Institute out of 400 competing startups giving it the exposure and funding it needed to continue developing the Rainbow Probe.

Podcast to Show Life at Leeds Hospitals

Much like Israel, Leeds is a hub of the healthcare industry. A new podcast will be taking a closer look behind the curtain to see what working at Leeds Teaching Hospitals is like. From ‘A day in the life of the Major Trauma Unit’ to ‘A journey through liver transplantation’ a new four-part podcast series, Vital Signs, captures the daily lives of the incredible people and services in at Leeds Teaching Hospitals.

Following on the back of the BBC series Saving Lives in Leeds, the eight-part access all areas documentary, the Trust now invites listeners to take a deeper dive into some of the key areas of the hospital’s work.

Each 30-minute episode brings several voices together to explore a particular speciality they work in. One episode unveils the power of play at Leeds Children’s Hospital, where specialist playworker Natalie uses distraction and preparation techniques, tailored for each young person to help them process and manage their appointments. In the episode on future talent, a midwifery degree apprentice and a pioneering gynaecology surgeon give two very different accounts of their working lives and how their learning brings about better patient care.

In the tenth anniversary year of the Major Trauma Centre at Leeds, different characters bring their working day to life and they talk about the importance and challenges of getting along with each other and why Leeds is leading in the field of trauma care.

And a fourth episode follows the story in the liver transplant team and the journey that takes place to deliver a new organ to a patient. Leeds is a national centre for liver transplant, just one of the specialties that sets the Trust apart.

New Mobile Game Improves Mental Health

An Israeli startup has developed a mobile game,

Mood Bloom, which uses neuroscience-based techniques to treat symptoms of anxiety and depression.

The game uses a therapeutic method created using in the research of Dr Moshe Bar, the former Director of the Cognitive Neuroscience Lab at Harvard Medical School, to treat the mood disorders.

The therapy, called Facilitating Thought Progression (FTP), is designed to disrupt negative thought patterns, lack of motivation, and the inability to experience happiness. It does so through simple exercises that broaden patients’ thought patterns to be more associative, and help them to think more quickly, which research has found can improve a person’s mood.

Hedonia’s new game, Mood Bloom, utilises these exercises by using word chains, associations, speed reading, and even sky-gazing to expand thinking and make thoughts travel more rapidly.

Marketing Director Joins Leeds-based Asda

David Hills, Aldi’s former Group Director of Marketing and Communications has completed his move to Asda.

He becomes the Leeds-based retailer’s Chief Customer Officer after more than 16 years at Aldi. Prior to that he was UK Customer Marketing Controller at Kellogg’s.

“It is a privilege to lead the customer team at such an iconic British brand that has a long heritage as a consumer champion,” he said. “This is an exciting time to join Asda as it accelerates its growth in convenience and omnichannel retail, bringing outstanding quality products at incredible value to many more communities throughout the UK.”

In the new role, Hills will be responsible for the strategy and development of Asda’s total customer proposition, marketing, and brand management.

New Podcast Hits Leeds

A new podcast for Leeds businesses has hit the airwaves, thanks to Phil Fraiser, who after building and selling his business, set himself up as a business sounding board.

The podcast, aptly titled Leeds Business Podcast sees Phil chat to various high profile Leeds business owners about the ups and downs of their careers. The unsavoury trail left behind by recent workplace harassment claims by McDonald’s UK employees has cast a spotlight on the critical role of employer responsibility. Creating a safe, harassment-free workplace isn’t a recommended practice; it’s an absolute necessity. Proactive employers who establish and maintain robust,

Cultivating a Secure Workplace EMPLOYMENT LAW

up-to-date employment policies have the benefit of knowing their workplace is secure and legally sound.

The Significance of Employer Responsibility

Establishing and maintaining a safe workplace is imperative for employers, transcending ethical boundaries. Beyond moral obligations, it boosts employee morale, enhances productivity, reduces turnover, and mitigates legal risks.

Structuring a Resolute HR Policy

A comprehensive HR policy should leave no room for ambiguity, covering all potential grounds of harassment under the Equality Act 2010 including sexual, racial, age-related, disability-based, and religious. An employer must make sure the HR policy is readily accessible to all employees. Regularly reviewing and updating policies is essential to maintain relevance and comprehensiveness.

Your Three Core Strategies

1. Training: Hold regular anti-harassment training for all employees to reinforce the

message that your business has an unwavering stance against harassment.

2. Procedures: Establish well-defined procedures for handling complaints, including specific timelines, investigation processes, and potential outcomes.

3. Proactivity: Proactive employers pave the way for secure workplaces.

These core strategies protect your employees, plus shield your business reputation and financial stability. Engaging a specialist employment solicitor is invaluable for guidance on best practices, ensuring that your workplace remains harmonious, secure, and legally compliant.

Be Proactive in Seeking Advice

In a constantly evolving business landscape, creating a safe workplace is not solely a legal requirement; it is an absolute strategic imperative for enduring success. As a business owner, you understand that change is constant, so it is essential to stay proactive and speak to a specialist employment solicitor to ensure that your business policies remain relevant and secure.

UK Israel Business welcomed guest speakers CEO Simon Berwin, and Ex-footballer Brian Deane to its latest breakfast event

The most recent UK Israel Business Breakfast took place on 6th September, and as ever the meeting started off with a word from Colin Glass. Colin took the time to thank meeting sponsor The One Solution, as its owner Marshall Frieze now celebrates 25 years in the industry, and the business celebrates an award as telecommunications supplier of the year.

Simon Berwin, the CEO of Berwin Advisory, was then introduced to discuss his recent visit to Israel: “It’s a great pleasure to be here today. The first reason for that is that my late mother actually brought this organisation to Leeds. My love affair with Israel started in 1971 when I went on a traditional youth trip then in 1976 I went to Israel having joined the menswear industry, on a trip with Menswear Magazine. I ended up spending that week with two great supporters of this organisation, the late Bobbie Caplin and Bill Fotherby. All the stories Bobbie told everyone about himself, I can confirm were true. The night he introduced me to Miss Israel will remain with me forever. Many of you will know that Leeds was the European centre of tailoring, mostly from immigrants arriving here. We built our business up from 1,000 suits a week when I was first there, to 18,000 at the end.”

He then went on to explain how his trip to Israel came about: “Part two of my career started, which has been non-exec work and also selling to retailers and using my network. One of our competitors was an Israeli business and I did them some rather

large favours for nothing, and in March this year they invited me over to see their setup. I told Jane Clynes that I was going and within 48 hours, there were three appointments set up for me in Israel, one of which was in the very northeast of the country. Driving there took my back to my very first visit, because the road structure in Israel is sensational, and driving to this village that had become a town was just an eye-opener.”

Colin then introduced the meeting’s main speaker, ex-footballer Brian Deane, interviewed by JLife’s Elliot Landy. Brian is currently involved in a programme seeking a solution for brain health monitoring in sport. A fascinating eloquent talk began from growing up in Chapeltown and how he pushed himself in his pursuit of his dreams as he discussed his upbringing in the area: “At the time, it was a fantastic area

to grow up in and it was really a melting pot of different cultures. I always used to look at where the synagogue is and used to hear the stories of how the Jewish community used to be prevalent in the area but had moved on. It was really great to be able to later go in that synagogue as an adult.”

He highlighted how from an early age, his family influenced him and how he used this structure throughout his life. The audience were keen to hear his career highlights, from leaving Park Lane College for his first professional contract at Doncaster Rovers, scoring the first ever goal in the Premier League to appearing for a number of top clubs including our own Leeds United. His management career took him to Norway, after which he mused about his work as a transformation coach helping retiring players move in to other areas.

Personal tax-free thresholds are set to be frozen at £12,570 until 2028. As a result, this creates what is known as ‘Fiscal Drag’. This means that tax thresholds and allowances do not keep up with inflation or wage growth, resulting in more of a taxpayers’ income being taxable.

Therefore, we need to look at ways to get the most out of our income. The two most common sources of an individual’s income are salary and dividends. But which is the most tax efficient source of income? This is a loaded question, and there is no straight forward answer. It is entirely subjective to an individual’s personal financial situation.

The biggest decider in determining your income source often falls to the different taxable thresholds available from dividends and salaries. For ease of understanding, these have been summarised in the tables below.

Salary Tax Rate 2023/24 Tax band Thresholds Tax free personal allowance £0 - £12,570

Basic rate income tax @ 20% £12,571 - £50,270

Higher rate income tax @ 40% £50,271 - £125,140

Additional rate income tax @ 45% £125,140 upwards

Dividend Tax Rate 2023/24 Tax band Thresholds Tax free personal allowance @ 0% £0 - £1,000

Basic rate income tax @ 8.75% £1,001 - £36,700

Higher rate income tax @ 33.75% £36,701 - £125,139

Additional rate income tax @ 39.35% £125,140 upwards

As well as the taxable thresholds available, there are other important factors to consider, such as dividend payments can only be made from profits. Thus, you cannot be paid in dividends if the firm does not earn a profit. However, you can take a salary even if your business makes no profit.

A salary is subject to National Insurance contributions, pension contributions, sick pay etc whereas dividends do not incur such restrictions.

On the flip side, salaries are a taxdeductible business expense, but dividends

are not. Most company directors find that paying themselves a salary up to the tax-free allowance and receiving the rest of their income through dividends is the most taxefficient way to operate.

For more information and professional guidance regarding salary and dividend implications contact Leon and Company Accountants and let’s work together in securing your financial health.

ADVICE

The perfect meal is a delicately balanced blend of flavours, often accompanied with a perfectly paired glass of wine. At NIRU catering, that blend is embodied by Chefs Nissen and Reuven. The combination of Nissen’s classic training and Reuven’s Middle Eastern flair, produces an explosion of flavour that meld together creating the perfect dish for every occasion.

These two delightful Chef Owners have been catering quality and competitively priced events across the North West and London over the last two years. During that time, they have built up a reputation for artistically presented food, that delights the eyes and then goes on to burst with an explosion of

flavour and senses. Their buffet bars and salad stations, overflowing with proteins and vegetables are always an instant hit. They work with each client and produce a menu, style and theme that is bespoke for them; everything is tailored to each client’s taste and request.

Whether it is a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, an Aufruf or Engagement party, you know that your guests will walk into the room and go ‘wow’. The party begins straight away, and everyone knows that they are in for a great time. One look at an overflowing charcuterie board with their signature coffee rub brisket _ done to a perfect medium-rare, their famous 24-hour sous-vide sliced turkey and heaps of the tastiest mini meatballs this side of the Mediterranean, and the host is once again reassured that their guests are going to be fed a banquet that befits the Simcha. But that’s not surprising, as this duo also own and run Benny’s Bistro in Prestwich. A classic American Style burger joint, that became an overnight sensation and has maintained its reputation as providing the best Kosher burgers outside of New York City.

For a very meat forward team, they somehow also manage to highlight the humble vegetable as well. Reuven’s skill is unparalleled, as he takes an aubergine or a cauliflower

and turns them into culinary masterpieces. You want a totally vegetarian menu? NIRU’s selection of salads would teach Ottolenghi a thing or two.

During their time in the competitive Kosher catering game, Nissen and Reuven have covered the gamut from intimate dinner parties for 10 to a large wedding for nearly

300. But regardless of the amount of guests, every single event receives their individual attention. In recent months they have been delighted to start catering within the Leeds community and as well as bookings for this coming year, have already received enquiries about events in 2025.

POLAR PLUNGE

Jeremy Farber, Owner of HeadFirst hairdressers, has recently completed a charity swim in Loch Tay, Scotland, to raise money for DigiBete.

DigiBete is a nonprofit organisation committed to empowering and supporting children and young individuals living with Type 1 Diabetes and their families. The charity was founded with the mission to make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by this life-changing condition. DigiBete achieves this through the development of innovative digital resources, educational tools, and a supportive community, which all play a crucial role in managing Type 1 Diabetes effectively.

Jeremy plunged into the icy waters of Loch

Tay after his recent recognition by Buckingham Palace for his amazing charitable efforts. Jeremy has been inspired by his client and friend Dr Fiona Campbell who has recently received an OBE for her dedication and contribution to children’s & young people’s diabetes in Leeds. Dr Campbell has also been a major force nationally in pushing for the children’s hospital in Leeds.

Jeremy’s determination to take on the open water swim in Loch Tay was a symbolic act of solidarity with those living with Type 1 Diabetes and their families, reminding them that they are not alone in their journey.

The fundraising campaign is still ongoing, with a total goal of £5,000. If you would like to donate, head to Gofundme.com/f/type-1-family-supportin-leeds-and-west-yorkshire?utm_ campaign=p_lico+share-sheet&utm_ location=FIRSTTIME&utm_medium=copy_ link&utm_source=customer

CHAI GAVE US OUR MUMMY BACK

“When I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, I just didn’t know what to do. I had my surgery in Israel as both mine and my husband’s families live there. Then I had a big decision to make - where would I have my treatment? How could I uproot my husband and girls? But equally, how would I get through my chemotherapy here without our families’ support?

Then my oncologist told me about Chai. They have been amazing –I truly believe there is nothing like it in the world. Being able to rely on Chai’s all-encompassing support gave me the confidence to come home to my husband and girls. Thanks to Chai, we’re together as a family again”

SWEET DREAMS

Leeds 2023 has been a fantastic hit since it kicked off in January, with hundreds of events having successfully taken place, celebrating the vibrancy and creativity of our city. The festival has been facilitated through Neighbourhood Hosts: 33 remarkable local people passionately committed to the areas they live in. Nick Wayne is one of the area’s Neighbourhood Hosts, and he tells us what it means that Leeds 2023 is now entering its final phase.

“We started with the Awakening phase, which went up to the end of April, then May

hundreds – including some of the existing events that go on throughout the city anyway, with the advantage of Leeds 2023 being added to the way it’s been organised. For example, Light Night, which has been going on for 18 years, is going to be linked into Leeds 2023 this year, to give it extra marketing and exposure. But there are also many new events happening as well, which are specific to Leeds 2023.”

Being two phases down Nick has had a chance to reflect on the success of the festival so far: “The programme has been hugely successful. We’ve had big responses from our audiences and there’s been tremendous attendance at events. For example, the World Music and World Food Festival that I put on at Soldiers Field on 17th June attracted 2,500 people, it was so successful that we’re actually in the planning stages to put it on again next year.”

of its success. People are travelling to Leeds to experience these events and we hope that they will continue in the coming years, I think that they really will.”

until the end of August was Playing, and then as of 1st September until the end of the year is Dreaming,” Nick explained. “That means that summer is over and all of the summer events which took place have made way to a whole new series of events – we’re talking about

Already Leeds 2023 is leaving its legacy on the city: “I think it’s highlighting nationally and internationally, the attitude of the city to the various communities and how those communities should be celebrated through cultural and arts-based events that carry on in 2024 and beyond. That’s really a measure

If you want to get involved with Leeds 2023 or have an idea you like to share, there’s still time to get in touch: “I think most of the Neighbourhood Hosts would welcome contributions from the various communities for any ideas that they may have about future events. This is for the people of Leeds, not for the people who run Leeds 2023. It’s for the communities. If they have an idea, if they have a desire for something to happen, get in touch.”

COMMUNITY

Leeds Jewish Welfare Board TRANSFORMING CARE FOR OLDER PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY

LJWB continues to invest in its services to support older members of our community

Through investing in more staff, more services and more activities we can help people cope with the increasing needs and issues often faced by people as they age. Working closely with clients, their families, friends and, if required, other health and social care professionals, we support people to make informed choices about their lives based on their wishes and what is right for them.

Introducing Two New Roles

LJWB is delighted that the money gifted to us following the closure of Donisthorpe Hall has enabled us to provide two new roles to help people navigate their choices and make informed decisions about future housing, health and social care needs.

LJWB’s Older Person’s Memory Support Worker helps people and their families living in the community with memory loss or when faced with a diagnosis of dementia. Our dedicated worker can provide information and advice to individuals, families and carers to enable them to make informed choices

about living well with dementia. We are able to provide advice about practical solutions to help people live a fulfilling life and remain as independent as possible. We also deliver a variety of groups and activities at the Marjorie & Arnold Ziff Community Centre (MAZCC) to support people living with memory loss. If you are a carer, LJWB’s Carers Group is the place to meet, share ideas, talk to other people in similar situations and know someone is there for you.

The second role of Care Facilitator Co-ordinator has been specifically developed

to support people being discharged from hospital or needing social care to ensure they have all the support they need in place when care needs change. We can guide you through the process of looking for and funding care, helping you to navigate the often complex health and social care systems and find the right place or team for you, to meet your needs and wishes. Once care is in place, we will keep in touch and ensure you are able to continue to live your chosen life and maintain your connections in your community.

Keeping Active

We have a daily timetable of activities, classes and therapeutic groups at the Marjorie & Arnold Ziff Community Centre (MAZCC), as well as a subsidised hot Kosher Lunch, Monday – Friday. Transport Services are available to help you to get to and from our 35+ weekly activities if you find it challenging to use public transport, taxis or the help of family and friends. There’s something happening most days and we would love to see you. Call Reception on 0113 268 4211 to learn more or book your place.

Campaign Trail!

Jessica Ward, aged 10 years old and a student at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), has already done more political campaigning than most of us will do in a lifetime in her bid to become Leeds Children’s Mayor. Jessica is among 12 finalists from across Leeds who are still in the race, and when the opportunity to run for the position became available, she immediate knew she wanted to go for it: “I want to be a high achieving person,” Jessica said. “And it’s also just a great thing to do. I want to be someone that people know about, so getting a head start on speaking in public is good. It seemed like my kind of thing, and it was I guess, because I’m in the final 12!”

While the process has involved a lot of new experiences, Jessica has enjoyed campaigning: “It has definitely built up my confidence. Before I wasn’t very confident, but I was getting better, and it has helped a lot because you have to talk to strangers a lot of the time to campaign. I love all of the campaigning where I go out to places, like the netball camps at GSAL and other places as well. Sometimes I see my friends, and sometimes it’s random people. It’s always really fun doing it because there are a lot of nice people to meet. I really love my business cards! They have my Facebook and Twitter and the link to the voting website on it and it’s really cool to hand those out.”

Jessica is running on a manifesto centred around improving children’s and young people’s mental health in Leeds, which is a very important issue for her: “It turns out that 50% of mental health issues start by the age of 14 and can continue into adulthood, which I thought was really horrible. Personally, I have a mild case of social anxiety. I know how hard it can be sometimes, and I only have a mild case, so I want to stop people who have more severe cases from harming themselves. Some of my friends also experience mental health issues.”

As with any prevalent issue, there are many ways it could be tackled, and lucky for us, Jessica has a few ideas of her own: “I think my favourite idea is mental health first aiders. For example, if you were to fall and cut your knee at school, you would go and see a first aider. There should be someone to talk to who is a trained therapist. So you can be treated mentally as well as physically.”

Jessica would also like to introduce spaces into Leeds which are exclusive to children and filled with wellness activities: “We could have parks that only children are allowed in. Of course, if they’re really young then adults should be allowed to accompany them, but otherwise just children and no stray adults who don’t have a child there. These areas could contain play equipment, nature walks, craft areas, or mindful activities like gardening. Fresh air is actually really good for your brain and so is playing with other children.”

The new Leeds Children’s Mayor will be announced on 5th October, and we wish Jessica the best of luck!

MEDIA PREVIEW

Transitioning to electric for lifelong petrolheads can be a difficult concept to grasp, but it only takes three stages to become accustomed to a new vehicle – enhance your mindset, find your EV, use your tools. With these stages behind you, you’ll have a much clearer idea of your first EV.

Know Your Eggs

Before switching to electric it’s important to do your research and approach the new situation with an open and informed mind.

One of the biggest drawbacks for those resisting a switch to an electric car is the range, and though it’s controversial to say so – you’d be right, you won’t be able to drive as long as a petrol car without charging. But those who have converted to electric cars see the whole picture, focusing not on the things you’ll be missing out on, but the aspects you’ll gain. Such as cheaper and less planet damaging fuel, a head start on the 2030 ban on the sale of new diesel and petrol cars, fewer chances of breakdowns due to less moving parts, and free tax for your first year of capital allowances to name a few!

After adopting the right attitude it’s important to know everything you can about the technicalities, like charging at home and away, before you buy your car to avoid any nasty surprises. Make sure you

know the difference between chargers, like (ultra-) rapid, fast, or slow chargers and ensure you understand your cables, such as a CCS charger or a Type 1 or Type 2.

An EV for Everyone

The London to Paris EV race provided some award winning EVs that may be worth a look. (see Page 30.)

system. With a range of 193 miles per charge, the IONIQ has often been praised for its energy efficiency, saving you money on each charge.

Volkswagen ID Buzz

Have you always dreamed of a life on the open road? With the new Volkswagen ID Buzz, you can travel the globe sustainably in this all-electric camper van. Remodelling the beloved and iconic aesthetic of the classic Volkswagen camper van, this van can do 264 miles on one charge and comes in versions with and without back seats for an empty or full cabin.

Kia Niro

Often applauded as an affordable, practical, and spacious electric SUV, the Kia Niro (previously known as the e-Niro before being rebranded in its second generation) is the UKs third bestselling electric car. Though its cousin the Kia EV6 may be more high-tech and luxurious, the Niro gives you similar technology and interior design for a lower price.

Gear Up

There are plenty of tools to help you on your way, most notably the Zap-Map app which allows you to plan your route showing you charging stops along the way. Zap-Map is the most popular charging app in the UK and it’s easy to see why, it has tens of thousands of EV chargers tracked on its database and it even lets you check the status of chargers to avoid the broken ones and to find new favourites.

Hyundai IONIQ

Winner of the Saloon Car Category in both legs of the race, the Hyundai IONIQ is an excellent five-seater car for the whole family complete with a touch screen entertainment

Another handy piece of kit is the Zappi home charger by myenergi. You’ll need to install a charger outside your home or in your garage to charge your car (most people do this over night for even cheaper energy) and the Zappi charger can take your energy from the grid or renewable energy sources, if you have solar panels already installed you could get a charge for free!

MOTORING

If you’ve broken down and you’re in a safe space, call your breakdown provider. If you don’t have break down cover, you can still call a breakdown company and ask for emergency assistance.

What do I do if I break down on the motorway?

Here’s what you do if you break down on a motorway:

• If you’re still able to drive the car, exit the motorway. This should make conditions much safer for you. Recovery vehicles can get to you more easily too.

• Turn on your hazard lights whether you’ve stopped or not.

• If you can’t get off the motorway, pull over onto the hard shoulder and stop as far across to the left as possible. Turn your wheels to the left too.

• Use the doors furthest away from traffic to exit your vehicle. The driver should climb over into the passenger seat to get out. Put on high-visibility clothing if you have it.

• Wait outside of your car on the other side of the barrier that runs alongside the hard shoulder. Stand away from your car and at a few metres behind the rear of your car. Use your phone to contact a breakdown service or local garage for assistance.

If for any reason you can’t use your own phone to call for help, you can use an emergency phone on the motorway. The

direction of the nearest phone should be indicated by arrows on the posts supporting the hard shoulder barrier.

What shouldn’t I do if I break down on a motorway?

Here’s what you shouldn’t do if you break down on a conventional or smart motorway:

• Don’t take pets out of the car. They are likely to be much safer inside the vehicle. On hot days, roll down the window a fraction to provide them with cooler air.

• Don’t put down a warning triangle. The speed of the other vehicles means it’s too dangerous to do so – and it’s unlikely to be effective as a warning.

• Don’t attempt even basic repairs. Stay well away from your car, as there’s a significant risk of it being hit by

joyful weekend full of music, dance, arts and crafts, stalls, workshops, a parade and a huge variety of food and drink.

Chapel Allerton Village is a thriving and diverse neighbourhood that boasts a rich history and a vibrant community spirit. From its charming streets lined with independent shops and restaurants to its lush green spaces and cultural events, the area has earned a reputation as one of Leeds’ most sought-after places to live and visit.

The area’s history dates back centuries, and its name is a nod to its origins as a rural chapel in the 12th century. This chapel, dedicated to All Saints, stood as a place of worship and community gathering long before the bustling streets and residential neighbourhoods we see

The festival took place recently between 1st and 3rd September, to great success! Both residents and visitors are delighted by a range of quality music acts, arts and crafts, and even a parade. Luke Saggu, one of the organisers of the event, commented: “I’m so proud of all the hard work every single volunteer involved puts in to make the festival a success each year. The sun shone on us all weekend and it was the most

“The festival at its core is about bringing people together and supporting and proving a platform for local artists, creators, performers, small businesses, and charities. I think that’s what we managed to do and I’ve loved every second of it.

“This year we’ve doubled down on our commitment to providing creative opportunities for local young people and emerging artists. A big thank you to the teams at Leeds Community Foundation and Leeds 2023 for all their support in helping us make this a reality.”

Chapel Allerton is known for its independent shops and businesses that line its streets. Wander down Harrogate Road, and you’ll find boutique stores, unique eateries, and cozy cafes. From vintage clothing stores to bookshops,

Speaking to us fresh off of an appearance on Steph’s Packed Lunch, Chapel A Pilates guru Claire Sparrow was eager to tell all about her new book and how Chapel Allerton Pilates Studio came about: “So I’ve pretty much done Pilates my entire life. When I was a young dancer, we did body conditioning. It wasn’t even called Pilates at that point. Then when I was at university studying dance, we had a dedicated Pilates studio. Then I got injured and Pilates was all I could do. When I went back to dancing I was better and stronger because of the Pilates. I committed at that point that I would go forward and learn to teach the method.”

Claire is a second-generation Pilates teacher, which means that she learned from someone taught by the inventor of Pilates, Joseph Pilates: “I’ve been very lucky that I have travelled the world to learn from the best. London was the only place you could train in the UK originally. Then I went to Toronto, and more recently I became a second-generation Pilates teacher, which means that I was taught and mentored in Florida over about 18 months, with Lolita

San Miguel, one of only two people that Joseph Pilates, the creator of the method, certified to teach.”

While it’s known that Pilates has extensive benefits for your health, Claire has also found that it helped her recover from giving birth: “Pilates was there for me after I had given birth, particularly after I had my first son, who is now 18. Afterwards, I realised the impact of being pregnant and having had a birth injury. Pilates really helped me to heal from that experience.

Because it benefitted me so much, it was really important to me to create that opportunity for others.”

Even with a packed schedule, Claire knew she wanted to share her knowledge with others and is now releasing a book, Hope for Your Pelvic Floor, which will be coming out on 13th October: “What drove me to write the book was that I’ve been teaching the specialist method that I’ve created called the whole-body pelvic health method for a number of years. I created it out of my own needs because I discovered that I had pelvic organ prolapse. It’s very common for women, about 50% of women have symptoms of it. One day, I was with one of my one-to-one clients and she told me that I was the voice of hope for women, and that I need to write a book.”

Claire’s book, will be launching on 13th October with an event at Chapel Allerton Pilates Studio. Then on 30th November there will be a Q&A event taking place at The Little Bookshop, where you can see Claire read a section of the book live and sign copies.

MEET THE CHEF

We find out more about Sukhothai’s Executive Chef Ban Kaewkraikhot, who’s been bringing top notch Thai cuisine to Chapel Allerton since 2002.

Ban Kaewkraikhot | Executive Chef & Co-Owner Sukhothai Restaurants

Start date: 2002

Previous positions: Street food stall owner in Bangkok

Signature dish: Pad Thai Gung (Pad Thai Noodles with King Prawns)

Favourite Ingredient: ‘Pla Rah’ (Fermented Fish Sauce)

Favourite Snack: Delicious Durian Fruit – it’s not for everyone, but I love it

Career Highlight: Opening my first restaurant in Chapel Allerton back in 2002

Thai Food Fact: Thais eat family style, don’t plan to order your own dish, all meals are shared in Thailand!

How has the Chapel Allerton restaurant evolved over the last 20 years?

When we first opened Sukhothai Chapel Allerton back in 2002, the restaurant had just 20 covers and was a fraction of the size it is now. Over the years that followed we extended the restaurant three times, each time adding more and more covers due to the demand from the local community for our food. Over the decades our menu has changed numerous times, but our core offering has remined the same, and our commitment to authentic food and high-quality local ingredients remains at our core. Since we opened our menu has become much more refined, however it still retains many dishes from the original 2002 menu. You’ll find sharing platters, soups, salads, curries, noodles and so much more. We want to offer our guests variety so they can come back and try something new each time.

What’s made Sukhothai successful?

Over the years despite our continued expansion we have remained true to our ethos; to always provide high-quality, authentic Thai food with 5-star service, putting our guests at the heart of everything we do. Since day one we have been welcomed with open arms by the Chapel Allerton community, which we are forever grateful. We feel so lucky to be trading as strong as ever 21 years on.

What’s Sukhothai’s plans for the future?

We have recently refurbished the interior at Sukhothai Chapel Allerton and given the restaurant a ‘secret garden’ themed makeover, so we’re excited for all our customers to come and see it. We’re also in the process of launching some brand-new dishes, which will be available in the coming weeks, they’re all new dishes that you won’t have tried elsewhere. Not many people know, but ZAAP Thai is also part of the Sukho Group, and we have some exciting expansion plans for ZAAP in the pipeline which is keeping us all busy at the moment.

What was your inspiration when you opened ZAAP?

We wanted to create somewhere that guests could dine in a more laidback and fun setting. We had in mind creating a family-friendly restaurant that would appeal to all types of people. Whether they wanted to grab a quick lunch or have a celebration with friends, ZAAP would be a place for all. We’re really proud of what we have created at ZAAP, the people of Leeds really love the concept and the food we serve. There are now six ZAAPs across the country, with plans for more next year. We have big plans for ZAAP and we’re so excited to see where we can go with brand. Sukhothai.co.uk

The Magic Tenner is a national campaign which sees small local businesses opening their doors to provide either a product or a service for just £10. Jo MacBeth, Owner of Chirpy, is spearheading the campaign in Chapel Allerton: “We used to do Fiver Fest, but selling things for a fiver just wasn’t manageable for a lot of businesses. Now we have somewhere between 15 and 20 businesses taking part. The idea behind it is that the product or service costs £10, but that £10 generates about £50 back into the local economy.”

Bright Ideas

Leeds leads again with another fabulous event in the city. We sit down with the Director of Leeds International Festival of Ideas to find out what the legacy of the festival will be.

Having gone from strength to strength since its conception in 2017, Leeds International Festival of Ideas (LIFI) recently took over the West Yorkshire Playhouse for yet another packed three days of talks, panel discussions, and Q&As. Special highlights included a sold-out talk by Steven Bartlett, discussing outdated work practices, Ruby Wax chatting all things mindfulness and her personal journey, and Christopher Eccleston talking working class access to the arts industry.

Festival Director, Martin Dickson, told us about the hit event: “The festival is the creation of Leeds BID, the Business Improvement District. Our job is to bring more people to Leeds. There is a tangible and intangible aspect to our

work, and when we get it right, it’s a beautiful thing. For example, something like the Leeds Jurassic Trail, which we did last summer. We put dinosaurs in the city centre, and that drew more people into the city centre, to spend money and buy coffees. That’s the tangible part of it. The other aspect of it, the intangible part, is place marketing. Talking about the place that Leeds is, more boldly, more bravely, and with more excitement.”

One of the aims of LIFI is to promote everything that Leeds has to offer to the rest of the country: “The big delivery to the promotion of Leeds, and what better way to do that than through an amazingly unique festival, which had 39 speakers, many of whom will talk about this experience to their agents and each other, and so the word in ‘that London’ will spread.”

Martin is also hoping that the festival will have a social effect as well, challenging people’s ideas: “In the planning stage we come up with the topics we want the festival to cover, and they’re literally what we think is important at the moment and what we’re all talking about. Curiosity,

Conversation, and Connection is one strap line that we have. One thing we’re particularly keen on at LIFI is that we see a lot of difference in our world at the moment, sadly – a lot of bigotry and unpleasantness between people. What we’ve tried to do is bring different types of people together, purposefully, from across the city, and put them in front of conversations that themselves might educate people a little differently.”

The hope is that the attendees will carry the lessons they’ve learnt from the festival, back into their everyday lives: “We hope that socially, when people leave these events, they go back into the world with just a slightly different view of something: maybe more positively, or just better informed. And then we ask people to just make a little bit of a difference in their part of the world.”

Heart of the Community

WITHIN THE BOUNDARIES

Sixteen years in the making, Leeds Eruv has finally been completed.

Leeds eruv was recently completed after gaining planning permission in 2020. With funds raised a year later in 2021, the project took longer than anticipated to finish, but the works which commenced in January, are now finally complete. It’s hoped that it will attract young families to settle in Leeds and strengthen the community.

An eruv allows Orthodox Jews to carry certain items on Shabbat as well as allowing pushchairs and wheelchairs to be used. In other parts of the UK where an eruv exists, the positives are said to be life-changing for those who benefit from it. As there is a prohibition on Shabbat in moving objects from a private space to a public space, items such as books and keys cannot be carried from the home to Shul. However, in the same way that items can be carried around the home, the eruv effectively serves as an extended private space.

A boundary has been designed using natural features such as existing walls and rows of houses. Where there are gaps, these have been filled with around 100 poles which are connected in pairs with a wire, and almost 250 metres of new fencing. The eruv covers much of Alwoodley, Moortown, Chapel Allerton and Roundhay.

Under the supervision of the Leeds Beth Din, the eruv will be checked weekly.

Those wishing to use it are encouraged to visit Leedseruv.org to follow the status and sign up to a free WhatsApp group to get an alert each Friday afternoon as to the status of the eruv.

The website also features a map. Green lines show natural boundaries and red lines show the pairs of poles with wires, or rows of fencing. All properties inside this boundary are included in the eruv. All Leeds Shuls are within the boundary. Properties that sit on the outside of the green lines are generally included if the house has an enclosed garden. Anyone in doubt should check with a Rabbi.

The final part of the process of establishing the eruv was a matzah ceremony, completed at the BHH Synagogue. Dayan Kupperman gifted several boxes of matzahs which were received on behalf of the entire Leeds Jewish community by Rabbi Jason Kleiman. These matzos are now stored in the display cabinet in the BHH Shul foyer.

Halachic authority on the Leeds eruv, Manchester-based Rabbi Avigdor Grossberger brought many years of expertise to the project. The eruv was built by Moshe Katz of Limefield Eruv Limited and the architect was Daniel Rosenfelder of London.

Leeds eruv Chairman Jonathan Straight said: “I have been working on this project for the past sixteen years. Over this time, I have been blessed to work with a remarkable team of people who have helped the dream of an eruv for Leeds to become a reality.”

Two years ago, £180,000 was raised to build the eruv and maintain it over its initial year. Legal costs associated with the delay to the start of construction led to increased costs. All of this means the eruv has cost a little more than the committee had hoped, and a further fundraising day will be held to fill the gap.

Ongoing maintenance is not just the occasional repairs, but an annual license payable to Leeds City Council, public liability insurance, weekly checking fees and the production of accounts. So, in the meantime, those who will benefit from the eruv are encouraged to visit the website and make a modest donation, monthly contributions can be set up through PayPal.

Jonathan continued: “This will be a moment of transformation for the Leeds Jewish community who can now all enjoy Shabbat in a way that has never been possible before. What a way to start the New Year. Shana Tova.”

With a construction of a temporary structure without a roof and protection, the sukkah comes to remind us of the Exodus from Egypt, and moreover, sitting in the sukkah, inside a modest and small sukkah with only green trees comes to teach us a virtue: May we be happy with what we have.

A home symbolises a protected place. The place we aspire to protect us from cold, heat and danger. In Judaism, home is a place of immense importance, with a nation’s long-time yearning for a home of their own.

70 years ago, a group of visionary leaders introduced the concept of Jewish housing in north Leeds, and with this vision they safeguarded the future of our community. Their vision is now an innovative awardwinning housing association, with 550 properties unlike any other Jewish community in the UK.

LJHA was founded in Sukkot 1953 and is celebrating 70 years of helping people, and providing them permanent, safe, affordable homes. 15% of our community members use this incredible provision.

As we celebrate the final few days of Sukkot, LJHA remembers the Exodus of our people from slavery alongside their continuous search for a permanent and safe home with the planning of 28 family homes that will safeguard the next 70 years of our community.

We want to acknowledge what we have and thank everyone at LJHA for making sure that our community can still provide a safe haven to all.

We wish you and your loved ones חג סוכות שמח

And may we be happy with what we have.

Rejoice!

I remember as a child, waiting patiently, through the intense days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, feeling like the adults were the ones upon the stage and I was peering in from the sidelines.

And then came Simchat Torah, this was our turn! The fun and excitement in shul was for us, the sweets and party bags were for us! This time the adults looked on from the sidelines.

Simchat Torah was formulated by the Sages in the 6th century, at a time when the Jewish people had lost our Holy Temple, the Priestly service and festival pilgrimages, the fabric of Jewish celebration and practice had all but come to a devastating end. It was time to establish a new way to celebrate the festival of Shemini Atzeret. It had to be something which could be practised by everyone, anywhere, something which would ensure Jewish continuation and connection for generations to come, something for a people who had never seen the splendour

Rabbi Ozer Moszkowski offers some thoughts on the value of Simchat Torah for children.

and beauty which was Sukkot with the Temple. The answer was simple: Make it about the children.

Abie Rottenberg is a prolific orthodox ballad composer. His soul-stirring compositions always bring me to tears. As a second-generation Holocaust survivor, many of his ballads are Holocaust stories.

One of my personal favourites – a song I first heard when I was just a young boy and it touched me to the core – is called, ‘The Place Where I Belong’. It personifies the story of a Torah scroll from Kiev, sharing its excitement and anticipation as it is lovingly written by Yankele the scribe. When finally completed, the scroll delights in the joyous energy of the town as they sing and dance it to the ‘little wooden shul’, held tight by the rabbi as he implores the congregation: “No matter if you’re very young, or even if you’re old, live by the words you’ll find inside this scroll.” And indeed, they do: “...I saw old men die, the children grow. But never in a century, did I miss my turn once, for the fathers they had left me with their sons.”

WWII arrives and the Torah is hidden in a cellar where it remains for the duration of the war, abandoned. After the war, it is found and sent to a museum in America where it’s placed on display. But it still feels lost and alone. It longs to be at the “place where I belong.”

Every year, when we sing and dance with the Torah scrolls, I think of Abie’s song and I hear the Torah’s cry. For it is not a relic of our past but our “tree of life” – a guide to our present and the hope for our future. Not a display item but something we are to lovingly use and cherish.

As I watch the children running around collecting sweets and making noise this Simchat Torah, while holding the Sefer Torah close against my chest singing and dancing with it, I will be praying too. Praying that we always remember this message. Praying that we “live by the words [we] find inside [its] soul”. And praying that our future generations will proudly proclaim: “This is the place where I belong.”

CIRCUITS OF JOY

Ahead of Simchat Torah, we lay out our recommendations of the best kosher whisky and vodka tipples to rejoice on.

Talisker Skye Single Malt | £45.25

Good news for whisky enthusiasts! Single malt Scotch whisky doesn’t allow any additives other than caramel colouring, which is kosher, meaning that so long as your favourite Scotch wasn’t aged in an ex-sherry or wine cask, it’s fine for consumption. We recommend this Talisker for its quaff-ability! It’s smooth and easy to drink while still retaining the smoky sweetness the brand is known for.

Malts.com

Knappogue Castle 12 Year Old | £48.50

Irish whiskey can be a bit trickier when trying to find a kosher option. It’s not only the spelling that’s different here; the rules surrounding additives and flavourings are laxer, even for single malts. This Knappogue Castle single malt has been aged for 12 years in a bourbon cask, giving it an oak-y flavour, with notes of vanilla and fresh cut grass.

Knappoguewhiskey.com

Cymes Kosher Vodka | £22

Kavalan Distillery Select No.1 | £56.75

Japanese whiskies are growing ever more popular, and this distillery has really been making a name for itself, despite only having been established less than 20 years ago. This selection brings out the fruit flavour Taiwanese whiskies are known for, while also giving hints of chocolate that mingles with toffee apples, salted caramel, and vanilla.

Kavalanwhisky.com

Moses Vodka | £37.99

Moses Vodka is a natural organic vodka made from sugarcane and pure, fresh well water, certified as one of the finest in Europe. The vodka is made from sugarcane because it can be certified as kosher all year round. Sugarcane can be grown naturally and without pesticides, resulting in an organic product that yields consistent quality and taste. To match the clarity of the spirit, the vodka comes in a crystal-clear glass bottle, decorated with real 24 karat gold, perfect for celebrating.

Kosherwine.co.uk

For those who aren’t a fan of whisky, vodka can be a great alternative. This certified kosher vodka is produced by the Polish Ashkenazi community and is distilled from a base of high quality potatoes. Though vodka is usually known for its harshness of flavour, Cymes has exceptional softness and roundness, and is said to pair well with smoked salmon or herring.

LAYER UP!

How you can make your favourite summer clothes get through the cold weather.

As the colder months are upon us, its time to say goodbye to some of our favourite summer pieces until next year…or is it? Although those short shorts are unsalvageable in a British winter, there are some tips and tricks for getting the most out of your summer wardrobe!

T-shirts or high neck tops underneath dresses

If you have a simple light dress why not try putting a matching t-shirt or long-sleeved top underneath to provide an extra underlayer and some arm coverage? Depending on the colours and patterns in your dress this is a great opportunity to inject some complimentary colours. Throw on your Doc Martens and a coat and you’ll be toasty in style.

High neck tops and maxi skirts

Long skirts are an excellent opportunity to layer high neck tops or jumpers, with a chunky belt and some riding boots underneath you’ve got yourself a warm and cosy outfit!

Jackets on top of jackets

Sometimes more is more! To keep on wearing the clothes you like throughout autumn try layering a jacket underneath your coat which resembles the coat in shape. Have the collar or lapel of the undercoat overlapping the one on top to add some dimension to your outfit. If it’s a warmer day you can also swap your underlayer jacket for an oversized linen

Jumpers over dresses

Autumn fashion is all about layering. If you have a fitted dress throw a cropped jumper over the top and suddenly it looks like a pencil skirt! For a more relaxed fit, if you have a collared dress put a jumper over the top and let the collar peak out from the neckline to keep cohesion in your outfit.

Don’t buy new: If you have jumpers which aren’t quite the right length to go over dresses and still show your figure then use this handy trick. Over the top of your jumper wear a tight top or sports bra then tuck your jumper underneath until it’s the right length for your outfit.

Waistcoats and sweater vests

If you want to keep wearing your floaty linen shirts through autumn then try layering a waistcoat or sweater vest over the top of your shirt, this is a great outfit with either trousers or skirts – it even works with dresses depending on whether the lengths and fit of your pieces are right.

Just remember: to get the best out of layering your clothes keep the weight of your fabrics balanced and define your shape with belts, tucks, and well-placed hemlines.

Taster Day

JLife’s foodie Rick Sawes visits Eccup for a New Inn Taster Menu evening.

Surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside just minutes from LS17, The New Inn Eccup has been the archetypal country pub for ever, doing staple fish and chips, a steak, and a decent pint, with locals, walkers strolling the local area and thousands of visitors to Emmerdale’s tour passing through. But now, with Michelin chef James Key at the helm

this pub is going

dining al fresco, and the transformed spacious dining area was set up beautifully for what we were about to receive. And just to complicate matters, my partner required some serious considerations, vegetarian and gluten free, not a problem for our James.

To the menu, and with excellent service throughout, the staff began bringing out our five dishes. First a Curried Parsnip with Truffled Scrambled Eggs, beautifully served and a very tasty unique twist on, well, everyone’s favourite scrambled eggs!

Next, an imaginative Beetroot and Apple Gazpacho, with Avocado Puree, Beetroot Fondant and Vodka Jelly. Not one I’d have chosen from a menu personally, but that’s the beauty of this, it takes you out of your comfort zone, we both loved this sweet and thirst-quenching delight and would absolutely choose this again. This was followed by Sweet Chilli Boudin Soup with Fresh Haddock Sausage, the fish perfectly cooked and presented in a flavoursome sauce that we thoroughly enjoyed.

The only way to describe this experience is to say, go and do it. Because to benefit from a skilled genius at work, you have to experience it firsthand. Try book in on the next taster menu night, or if you can’t wait, just book for lunch or dinner, Wednesday to Sunday, and enjoy some conventional cooking, but of the highest order.

form here, and word is getting around. The dynamic new owners have plans: the bonfire night in the adjacent field will attract 3,000 people, many bussed in from the park and ride to enjoy the firework and fairground festivities, the taster menus are always sold out, and there’s even an ice cream shack and a pizza oven in the garden. But it’s the everchanging menu when James goes to work with his creative genius that stands it apart, and I couldn’t wait to review a taster menu exclusively set up for my partner and I.

I wouldn’t be disappointed. A warm night kept many away, but a few locals were

In the groove now, and this time we had separate dishes, my veggie partner trying a Wild Mushroom and Kale Lasagne, which she adored for its smooth taste, and for me, a fantastic Glazed Chicken with lovely crisp Roast Potatoes and soft Broccoli, a dish I definitely would have chosen, but cooked in a herb dressing that just made it, well, special. And finally, for both, some Blackberry Panna Cotta set with agar agar and topped with chocolate honeycomb, absolutely delicious.

The New Inn delivers excellent, genuinely locally sourced food offering veggie, vegan and allergen-friendly options. Eggs from the on-site chickens, blackberries grown in the garden, now that is properly local. Plus, meat delivered daily from a special supplier in James’ black book known for the only the best meat available in the UK. It may be more expensive, but it’s the quality that counts, as The New Inn at Eccup will be renowned for.

Her passion for utilising the latest technology to deliver outstanding results for her patients is truly remarkable. Sharon’s new clinic on Harrogate Road is relaxed and luxurious, boasting the latest technology to treat patients.

What is dry eye?

Dry eye is a common condition that occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly. It can lead to discomfort, irritation, and blurry vision. Common symptoms of dry eye include dryness, stinging or burning sensation, redness, a gritty feeling, sensitivity to light, watery eyes, blurred vision, and discomfort when wearing contact lenses. Are you tired of dealing with dry, itchy eyes? Do you find yourself constantly reaching for eye drops? If so, you’re not alone. Millions of people suffer from dry eye

syndrome, a condition that can be caused by a variety of factors, including ageing, medications, and environmental factors.

How can aesthetic treatments be used to help dry eye?

Radio frequency and intense pulsed light (IPL) have been used for years to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of ageing. Now, these same treatments are being used to treat dry eye syndrome, with remarkable results.

How do radio frequency and intense pulsed light treatments help?

At The Eye Retreat Medispa, we’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of radio frequency and intense pulsed light treatments for dry eye syndrome. Our experienced team of Eye Care Professionals, Medical Aestheticians and Nurse Practitioners uses the latest technology to provide safe, effective, and personalised treatments that improve eye health and appearance.

Radio frequency and intense pulsed light are both non-invasive treatments that use heat to stimulate collagen production and improve skin tone and texture. When applied to the eye area, these treatments use heat that helps to improve the function of the meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing the oil that keeps our eyes lubricated. After treatment, patients often report a significant reduction in dry eye symptoms, including itching, burning, watering and redness. Many also notice an improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, as an added bonus.

What technology is used for the treatment?

Sharon is the first clinician in the UK to use the pioneering Inmode Envision technology, which incorporates dry eye treatment and skin tightening results. This groundbreaking, non-surgical ophthalmic device, deploys multiple programmable modalities which work synergistically to deliver precision ocular and facial treatments.

What other aesthetic treatments are on offer?

In addition to the dry eye disease treatments, The Eye Retreat offers a range of advanced aesthetic services, including Advanced Facials, Microneedling, Photofacials, Laser hair removal, Dermal Fillers, and more. These services are designed to help you look and feel your best, with results that are both natural looking and long-lasting.

At The Eye Retreat Medispa, we’re dedicated to providing safe, effective, and personalised treatments that improve eye health and appearance. Contact us today to schedule a consultation and learn more about how we can help you achieve optimal eye health and comfort.

Afrikana | TBC

This chain first opened in the Midlands in 2018, and has since spread to 10 different locations, with seven more on the way. Luckily for us, Leeds is one of them! Soon, hungry Loiners will be able to sample Afrikana’s signature home-cooked African inspired dishes. Some favourites from the other locations what we hope will be front and centre on the Leeds menu, include the Island Fish and Chips (cooked in Afrikana’s signature seasoning) and the Fried Chicken is Life – a crispy deep-fried chicken tossed in a spicy jerk sauce, served with rice and peas and plantain.

Having already successfully launched in Manchester and Leicester, Canadian pancake chain Fuwa Fuwa has announced that it will be heading to Leeds next, though the exact location of the restaurant has yet to be confirmed. The star menu item here is the souffle pancake, and indeed the name of the shop Fuwa Fuwa means “fluffy fluffy”. The pancakes are available with a variety of flavours, including matcha, cookies and cream, and crème brûlée.

NEW OPENINGS

Dr. Laura Reid, private GP and expert, is on a mission to break the stigma surrounding this natural phase of life. Urging women to embrace ‘the change’ with positivity and openness, she shares insights on how, with the right support, menopause can be a liberating and joyous journey.

Dr Laura breaks the ice in her own inimitable fashion by asking if I’ve ever seen the TV comedy-drama Fleabag starring Kristen Scott Thomas who sums up a woman’s life by explaining how we go through cyclical pain every month and endure childbirth, and just when we think it’s all over the menopause hits, bringing new and unbounded misery.

Dr Laura, however, implores us to stop being so pessimistic. With the right help, she explains, menopause can actually be quite wonderful: “In China, they refer to menopause as the ‘second spring,’ which is such a lovely perspective. In contrast, in the Western world, we often focus on hormone depletion, which carries a negative connotation, making women feel old and past their prime. However, with the right support, women can explore the positives, such as improved financial situations, independent children, rekindling relationships, pursuing hobbies, reducing work hours, and planning for retirement. Plus, there’s the relief of no longer worrying about pregnancy and PMS, which is a great bonus!”

While menopause holds the promise of newfound freedom and opportunity, Dr Laura acknowledges that the path to this Nirvana can be difficult for some: “Approximately 25% of women experience debilitating symptoms during menopause, and tragically, many suffer in silence,” she admits. “I’ve seen women who have attempted suicide. Women who have never had any issues with their mental health before and they’ve hit the menopause and gone into a very dark place. For some people, it’s very severe, and they need to access help

Pause for Thought

and not feel bad about doing so.

“Sometimes women are simply exhausted,” Dr Laura says matter-of-factly. “They’re so used to juggling all sorts of different things and playing so many different roles that trying to unpick if what is happening to them is hormonal, they are burnt out or suffering a combination of both, can be difficult.

“A common misconception is that menopause is the same for everyone and can be confirmed through a simple blood test, but that’s not the case. Menopause is confirmed when 12 months have passed since a woman’s final period. The preceding years, known as

women to enjoy a satisfying sex life,” she explains. “If there is pain during sex because of the menopause, then there doesn’t have to be. There can also be problems with lack of oestrogen and a thinning bladder wall at this time, which can lead to changed physical response to sex and recurring urinary tract infections. All these issues are really easy to treat.”

An important part of Dr Laura’s menopause consultation is highlighting areas of behaviour such as diet, alcohol intake, sleep and exercise, assessing how they impact on health now and long-term. She is keen to stress the importance of taking any changes slowly but prioritises strength training and getting sufficient calcium and vitamin D in your diet: “From age 30 testosterone starts to fall and women can lose up to eight percent of muscle mass per year, so bones are not as well protected,” she explains, “While after your final menstrual period, you lose one percent of bone density every 12 months. Enough calcium, and vitamin D and strength training can really help to address these losses.”

perimenopause,

manifest.”

are where most symptoms

These symptoms can include hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, mood swings, fatigue, brain fog, joint pain and weight gain, though Dr Laura is at pains to point out that not all women will experience all of them. Additionally, some may have relatively mild symptoms, while others may find them more severe and disruptive to their daily lives – and these are the ladies for whom intervention is vital in the form of HRT (hormone replacement therapy) lifestyle changes or complementary therapies.

Another misconception is that once you hit menopause, you are old, and you have no sex life. This is a myth that Dr Laura is keen to dispel: “I’m passionate about helping

Some women feel they have failed when they have to seek help during the menopause: “If your vision stops working, would you say, ‘I’m not going to the optician to get glasses, I’m just going to push on’?” counters Dr Laura. “Of course, you wouldn’t. If you can’t see properly, and it’s affecting your life, you get glasses, and it’s the same with the menopause. If your symptoms are interfering with your dayto-day life and how you feel about yourself –then seek help. Celebrities like Davina McCall are helping normalising menopause, which is a good thing, it’s giving women confidence to speak up. There are approximately 4.5 million women aged 50 to 65, so it’s important that it continues being talked about and women know where to access help if they need it.”

JLife talks to Dr. Laura Reid, Menopause expert at Dr Finlay’s Private Practice, on embracing your ‘Second Spring’.

We are now in autumn and thoughts turn to smells of pumpkin soup and warm spice candles glowing and pyjamas as soon as it’s dark. But wait… what about your footwear?

When sandals turn to boots and we start wearing slippers more, we need to pay more attention. Most people change shoes frequently and change hosiery daily, but we very often forget our trusty slippers. Slippers offer very little support to our feet and as

PODIATRY

Slip into Autumn

they are worn often they become a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi pathogens to thrive.

During autumn and winter our elderly relatives and neighbours are often confined to their home and spend long periods in slippers very often not washed or checked over.

In order to prevent falls and infections please check these point’s frequently:

• Wear washable full slippers not mule type to prevent falls. Mule type slippers have to be gripped by toes to hold on the feet and heels are not supported either. If arthritic toes or feet are involved this becomes quite difficult to do.

• Wash and change slippers frequently

• Make sure there are no seams or scratch spots that can cause irritation to delicate thin skin, by putting your hands inside

(looking first) and feeling for any damage. This is especially important to diabetic patients and those with neurological or vascular conditions.

Ill-fitting slippers are the cause of many falls and trips. If your loved one’s feet are very swollen with oedema or very broad due to hallux abduction (bunions) hammer toes and orthopaedic issues please check out companies like Cosyfeet and Miller Care.

If they have an underlying condition vat exemption may apply so don’t be afraid to ask.

Now is a good time to check over their feet too for long nails corns callus and dry hard skin or ulcers.

Always seek professional advice before embarking on any treatments and look for HCPC registered podiatrists for their safety and protection.

Most people wouldn’t ask: “Doctor, why am I struggling to run my 10k?”

I’ve found most patients regard their GP as a source of treating illness rather than promoting health and wellness. So I’m delighted I’m now working with Dr Finlay’s to try to change that.

It sounds trite, but it’s true: exercise is one of best medicines you can take. Now working in this area I’d definitely say the

One of the areas I’m passionate about is providing comprehensive medicals to support patients to exercise and enjoy themselves safely.

Desirable items for donation include baby wipes, aftershave, perfume, socks, deodorants, chocolate and sweets, puzzle books and pens, and snacks and drinks.

To get involved in the reverse advent calendar activity you can follow along by yourself at home until it’s time for

BUSINESS IS BOOMING

The fourth local business meet up recently took place at The Leeds Deli raising money for The Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease.

On a warm September morning, local businesses once again gathered at The Leeds Deli on Chelwood Drive for the fourth local business meet-up. Now firmly established as a key event on the networking calendar, attendees enjoyed delicious pastries and engaged in conversations in a laid-back setting, reaffirming the power of local business connections.

Sponsored by Winston Solicitors, a team of dedicated solicitors committed to giving clients the support they need across many different areas of law including family law, wills, and employment law, the North Leeds meet-up continues to bring people together and cultivate strong local relationships.

A charity raffle raised £65 for The Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease

Appeal; a collection run by Leeds Hospitals Charity which aims to create a specialised Motor Neurone Disease (MND) unit in Leeds. The fundraising has been led by Rob Burrow, the former Leeds Rhinos player who was diagnosed with MND at 37 and will be named in his honour after his tireless dedication to raising awareness and money for the disease.

Celebrations at Etz Chaim

On the first day of Rosh Hashanah, Etz Chaim Synagogue had a sushi and cocktails social specifically for young adults of the community ranging from to 20 to 35 organised by Rabbi Ozer. Those who attended got together to enjoy the refreshments and each other’s company while discussing the whys and wherefore of the festivals.

The second day of Rosh Hashanah was firmly for the kids at Etz Chaim. Children aged five and older enjoyed carnival games, sweet treats, and listening to the shofar while exploring more about the festival.

Holocaust Survivor Story Event Attracts 250

Over 250 guests came to The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) to see Jonathon Straight interview Daniel Finklestein about his new book Hitler, Stalin, Mum and Dad: A Family Memoir of Miraculous Survival.

The event which was hosted by GSAL and Milim had 250 guests in the audience and 70 watching online. Principal Sue Woodroofe introduced the event and spoke of how much the school valued its partnership with Milim. Finklestein’s book was described as: “A story of secret archives and freezing wastelands; of forgery and theft; concentration camps and the Gulag. Of evil and the consequences of evil. And of freedom, and freedom’s reward. It’s the story of how Daniel’s family took a journey which ended happily in Hendon, eating crusty bread rolls with butter in the Tesco café near the M1, but on the way took a detour through hell.”

Daniel, or Lord Finklestein since becoming initiated in the House of Lords in 2013, reflected that he wished to recount his family’s story during the Holocaust in a book since he was 10 years old. He said writing the book was a difficult process, especially when researching the part relating to Sobibor extermination camp.

After the event guests were also invited to view the refurbished Lawson Library –thought to be the oldest library in Leeds.

Roundhay High Barbering Course

Aimed at students who learn in a more hands-on environment, two students were selected from Roundhay High to complete a 12-week NVQ Level Two work-based qualification.

The two students, Ash, 15, and Abhi, 14, were chosen following a rigorous interview

process for the collaboration between Tonie Browne, the Owner of Jax Barbers, and the school’s Career Enrichment and Engagement Leader, Anne Powel. Tonie said: “I wanted to try and give back in some way. In school I struggled in class and leaned towards more practical learning. I thought it would add value to students who struggled academically.”

Anne added: “We’d like to be able to establish this in the curriculum as a vocational option for the right students and we’ve already identified students we would like to take through for the next programme if we can get the funding.”

Art After Dark

Coming to Leeds this month is Light Night Leeds, the UK’s largest annual arts and light festival which returns for its 20th year on 12th and 13th October.

To see the city in a new light and to view large-scale light projections and interactive installations, to music, dance, and street performances for free then come on down to explore the city during the 12th and 13th October. You will find installations at the Millennium Square Zone, Headrow Zone, Briggate Zone, Station Zone, Wellington Place Zone, South Bank Zone, SOYO zone, University Zone, and the Outside the Centre Zone.

Celebrating the Joy of Jewish Music

World class Chazan, Shulem Lemmer, is back performing at UHC Leeds on 7th November and in New West End Synagogue in London on 8th November for Bishnat 2021, founded in memory of Brian Nathanson in order to host concerts for the community, bringing people together to enjoy Jewish music which he so loved. Following last year’s hugely successful concerts, Shulem , together with renowned chazanim Avromi Feilich and Alby Chait are back together for a second year.

Previous attendees have gushed about their experience at the concerts saying: “The concert was absolutely magnificent – I could

have stayed all night, it generated such good feelings by all who attended.” Another audience member said: “I suspect more people studied Torah together in our Shul on Monday night than ever before – and really enjoyed it as it was wrapped in song.”

This year a souvenir brochure will be handed out to guests at the concerts, this presents a unique opportunity for businesses, guests, family, and friends to show their support through advertising.

If you are interested in taking a space in the brochure, please email Hilary.cane@ bishnat2021.org for further information.

Board Chairman Retires

Chairman of the Leeds Jewish Welfare Board, Russell Manning, is stepping down after seven years at the helm. Describing the LJWB as “silent safety net for Leeds” his parting message rom his post is to never forget to support the organisation.

He said: “This is an amazing organisation that is professionally run by a ream of dedicated staff who are having to deal with more complex issues than ever before. They deserve our support.” He added: “We are dealing with real world situations on a daily basis and having to support our brothers and sisters at a time of great stress. That is what community is all about.”

Russell Manning is to be succeeded by Helen Lewis as the role of Chairman, but prior to her succession has hoped that his final New Year Appeal will raise £300,000 to help towards maintaining LJWB’s current quality of service.

Spencer,

Leeds has an Eruv! While this won’t mean much to many readers, there is a significant minority to whom it will make a real difference. It creates an artificial boundary that allows Jewish people within the boundary certain leniencies on Shabbat like carrying necessary items and pushing a buggy or wheelchair. It also firmly establishes Leeds on the map as a major Jewish community in the UK, with aspirations to attract new, young families.

At this time of year, we have finished our annual cycle of reading the Torah and started again from Genesis. The story of

NO BOUNDARIES

Rabbi Eli Pink of Chabad Lubavitch discusses the restrictions released by the new Leeds Eruv.

Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden is perhaps one of the best-known episodes in the Bible. Tempted by the conniving snake and tripped up by her own words, Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge then gave it to Adam to eat too.

While Adam was quick to blame Eve for his transgression, the inescapable fact is that Adam had only one mitzvah –commandment – to perform while living in the Garden of Eden and he failed.

There is a story about two men struggling up a hill bearing heavy loads. One moaned with every step he took, while the other whistled happily to himself and walked with a spring in his step. Upon closer examination it was revealed that one was carrying bricks and the other, jewels. Their differing attitudes were reflective of their different loads.

I was reflecting on this story and the

impact that the Eruv will make on people’s lives. There is no doubt that not being able to carry or push children or wheelchairs on Shabbat is a restriction and I’m thrilled for all those who will benefit, but personally, despite having raised a large number of children (kein ayin hora) Dabrushy and I never particularly felt the burden. Similarly, now that the Eruv is up, while I am hopefully to see a change, I’m not convinced there is going to be a huge influx of people coming to shul on Shabbat.

In Genesis we are reminded that for Adam, even one restriction was too many. As we start our Jewish year afresh, we have a choice: can we look at our Jewish traditions with pride and joy – a happy load that we will carry with a spring in our step, or will we look at them as a load of bricks, that even one is too many?
