Kids Enjoy Autumn Camp The Autumn Mini-Camp at Chabad Lubavitch Leeds saw 25 children for four days in attendance this year. The camp’s theme was the four holy cities of Israel – Jerusalem, Hebron, Safed, and Tiberias. The children did arts and crafts, made fresh orange juice and hummus plates, learned new facts about cities, and made their own candlesticks. All of which was enjoyed under the supervision of Dabrushy Pink and Devorah Leah Kalmenson. Entertainment was also brought in on each day to do new activities with the kids including tennis practice and gymnastics and dancing classes. Dabrushy said: “It was important to give the children a positive connection to our Holy Land. We even had a couple children join the camp who’ve temporarily moved from Israel and everyone made them feel very welcome.”

LJWB Reopens Popular Café Leeds Jewish Welfare Board recently reopened its popular Pay As You Feel Café after acknowledging that now is a more important time than ever to provide a place for the community to have a space to connect with one another. The café, which will provide a twocourse hot vegetarian meal, is open for dining from 5pm to 6pm on 5th December and 9th January, future dates can be found on its website. As well as providing food and drink at whatever cost you choose, the Pay As You Feel Café has also added a social club providing entertainment immediately after dinner from 6pm to 7pm. Activities include crafting, karaoke, ballroom dancing demonstrations, live music, a bingo and quiz night, and music appreciation evening. Booking is essential to confirm your place, just call 0113 268 4211.

Leeds Born Chef Feeds the Frontline Simon Bar El, a private chef in Tel Aviv, whose mum and aunt still live in Leeds, was eager to play his part to support

frontline soldiers when he and his lifelong friend Adina Naftaliav decided to get together to cook as many meals as possible for frontline soldiers. Aiming to hit a target of 500 meals a day, the house on the Israel-Lebanese border means they are frequently interrupted to take cover in their bomb shelter. Simon said: “It has been a tough year in Israel with all the protests against the government. However, with the war starting, all this has been put aside and everyone is 100% behind the war and the aim of defeating Hamas and releasing the hostages.”

Knitting Appeal for Soldiers The search for knitters is on as Leeds Jewish Housing Association looks for people to knit black woollen hats to be worn under the helmets of Israeli soldiers. The Knit and Natter group has already been sending hats to Israel for 15 years but now they urgently need to increase their production. The pattern and wool for the hats will be provided by the Knit and Natter group and anyone who is an experienced or beginner knitter who would like to volunteer their time to make a hat should contact Norma on 07943 550 288.

Aliya for Camp Simcha Chief Neville Goldschneider, the Camp Simcha Chief Executive, has announced plans to retire in spring and move to Israel. He has led the charity in supporting families with severely ill children for almost two decades. Simon Johnson, Trustees Chairman said: “I applaud Neville’s decision to make aliya and be with his family, but it is most definitely the end of an era for Camp Simcha. He has embodied Camp Simcha, its values and ethos for so long, it will be odd not to have him at the helm.”

Chief Rabbi’s Words of Encouragement Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis recently visited the United Hebrew Congregation

where over 700 people listened to the words of encouragement he had to say to the community. Rabbi Mirvis said: “Together the Jewish nation will prevail. The forces of good will win against the forces of evil. It has happened before and it will happen again.” Rabbi Anthony Gilbert read the Chief Rabbi’s prayer for Israel and Rabbi Alby Chait read the blessing for the Israel Defence Forces, joined by the UHC choir. Rabbi Mirvis said: “We have to be brave and courageous. That is exactly what the soldiers of the IDF are doing right now. Their courage sand bravery is extraordinary and we, right around the world, are joining them through our efforts.” The Chief Rabbi also took the time to thank friends and leaders all over the world for supporting the community, saying: “When King Charles invited me to the Palace, and in his powerful statement after the attack, it was palpable his anguish and concern for the State of Israel. The Jewish nation is together right now around the world.”

Bakery Helps Raise £20,000 for Israel A coffee afternoon and bake sale event, organised in less than a week, managed to raise £20,000 for the emergency appeal for Israel. The community meet up, arranged by Phillipa and Bryan Bloom, was sponsored by Street Lane Bakery which donated bagels, bread and doughnuts to the bake sale. The guests of honour were Sara and Jeffrey Wine and openers Shelley and Stephen Lee. Child presenters Jessica Lily Rosenberg and Aliza Skolnick also contributed to the events success. Suzanne Benjamin from Leeds Jewish Representative Council commented: “This event was planned and delivered within a week and is a testament to the Leeds Jewish community that the support and generous donations we received have raised this fantastic amount. The £20,000 is increasing daily and if anyone wants to donate they should contact UJIA.”

A Family Perspective Leeds-born Hannah Benodis (nee Gilmore) recounts her family’s story since the fateful day of October 7th. Though she was born in Leeds, Hannah Benodis has lived in Israel with her husband Idan for 10 years. However, when Hamas attacked on 7th October, Hannah felt the need to return to her home city: “With two kids at home, and currently pregnant, I came back for support. There were no nurseries operating or anything like that, and my husband had to be in work every day. With not having any of my family here, I just needed help from them, and I wanted to keep the kids safe.” When Hannah arrived back in Leeds, she was met with a barrage of support from the community here: “People were amazing! Brodetsky took my older son to the nursery there. The day we landed we were already there going to see it and the next day he started there, so they were amazing. Raina from The Zone organised a group for all of the Israeli families who had come to Leeds. I didn’t have enough clothes for my kids and didn’t have the right sizes for winter clothes. Within a few days we had a massive bag full of clothes from different people, so I didn’t need to go out and buy any clothes.” The group organised by The Zone was a place to connect with other families in a similar situation to Hannah’s, though Hannah didn’t have much time to engage with it before returning to Israel: “There were about seven or eight different families. To be completely honest, as soon as I got to Leeds, I kind of dissociated myself from what was going on and

tried to give myself a bit of a mental breather from it all. The group was just set up before I had to go back to Israel, so I only got to attend one time.” Returning to Israel wasn’t an easy decision, but it was one Hannah eventually made: “I’m a teacher and my school was going back full-time, so we weren’t on Zoom anymore and I was no longer able to work from home. A lot of my friends who I work with have got husbands in the army right now and are by themselves with kids at home. And they were then having to pull weight for me not being there. My kids’ nurseries were going back as well, so it just felt like it got to the stage where everything was going to carry on like this for a long time.” The area where Hannah lives in Israel is away from the fighting, so it was relatively safe for her to return: “Thankfully, where we live we don’t have any immediate dangers. Since the war started, I’ve only heard sirens once or twice.” Despite this, the effects of what has happened can still be felt: “It’s like a trauma that everyone is carrying with them. It’s like everyone has just come back up from a grieving period. The conversations aren’t really the same. I have a lot of close friends whose husbands are fighting right now in Gaza, so obviously they’re very stressed. I feel very lucky to be in the position that I am, and I’m just trying to support my friends who are in more difficult positions.”

GOING FOR GOLD! JLife goes behind the scenes with TV property expert Alex Goldstein, to get the inside track on his eponymous Harrogate based property company and discover how he achieves the best results for his clients.

Alex, tell us how you came to start your consultancy?

At university, my parents’ neighbour had a reputable local estate agency group and I asked for some work experience. What was meant to be two weeks, turned into three months! When it came to applying for my first job on the graduate schemes, I was way in front of any competitors, as I knew more than them at the time. I started at Cluttons in central London, advising on country houses nationally, plus The Crown Estate and The Church Commissioners. I then moved to Harrogate and worked for Strutt & Parker and Knight Frank, before leaving the corporate world and setting up on my own. I spotted a niche in the market which wasn’t being filled. As a property consultant, I now help clients buy and sell their homes across the whole of Yorkshire and London, by giving them the inside track on the property and estate agency sector.

Tell us more about how your business works. One can split my business into two – buying and selling property across Yorkshire and London. On the buying side, clients

approach me with their search criteria and budget. I then liaise with my property network I have built up over the last 22 years in the industry, approaching vendors who I know, agents or those properties in the off-market sector (i.e. they are not online or in the public domain). I then negotiate and secure the property on the best possible terms for my client. The selling side of the business is rare in the industry. Having been an estate agent, I know how the system works and I ensure that my clients sell for the best price with the least stress. Advising them for instance how to maximise the value of their home, which agent to instruct and the reasons why. I stay on board throughout working alongside the agent and orchestrate the sale, ensuring that all those little tricks behind the scenes are being carried out. When a client involves me in the sale of their home, they pay me nothing! My fee is paid out of the appointed estate agent’s standard commission. I add value to the owner, without the cost.

So what motivates you?

There have been some extremely difficult transactions I have dealt with, which have been the most demanding of my career. The world seems to be getting increasingly more complicated. Throw emotions, significant amounts of money, solicitors, banks, surveyors and estate agents all into the mix and you can get some very extreme situations! Right now, trying to get properties from ‘under offer’ to ‘exchange’ remains significantly challenging and the amount of time it takes is getting ever longer.

When you exchange and complete on a transaction, the outpouring of emotion from the client can be amazing and it’s a privilege to be part of their lives for this. It’s a great feeling to know that it was a super result for them and they go on to recommend me to their friends. I enjoy the risk of being in business on my own and without having a safety net. I relish challenging peoples’ perceptions of estate agents and property for the better. Being small means that I can make a decision about my business in an instant, without running it past anyone else.

Who in business do you most admire and why?

What are your standout career highlights so far?

Helping various sports stars, Google employees and National Lottery winners – one always gets a thrill, plus advising on some of the best properties in the UK. Being featured on BBC1 and BBC2, plus interviews on ITN and BBC 5 Live. Having my own property radio show at the former Stray FM, has to be up there as well.

What sets you apart from the competition?

Over 22 continuous years’ in the property sector, 100% five-star Google reviews, over 225 glowing client testimonials and the majority of business comes was through personal recommendation - which is probably all you need to know!

Hearts Held Hostage We hear from a Leeds based member of a family which was thrown into turmoil when Hamas attacked on 7th October.

When Hamas attacked Israel on 7th October, many families where changed forever, as loved ones were killed or kidnapped. With a conflict such as this one, which has spanned decades and cost many lives, it can be too easy for the world at large to allow the people affected to become just another number. We speak with Goldie – who has chosen to go by a pseudonym due to security concerns – as she shares her family’s heartbreaking story. Despite being spread throughout the world in Leeds, Israel, Germany, and Austria, Goldie’s family are very close: “My cousins and I all grew up together as a normal family, celebrating holidays and festivals together,” Goldie says. “My husband and I moved away from Israel 15 years ago, but we always kept in touch through the mothers, the matriarchs. They would share information about boyfriends, marriages, things like that. We’re a very close family.” On 7th October, three members of

Goldie’s family were killed by Hamas, and seven others were taken hostage, the youngest of them only three years old: “The family came together from across Israel to stay in the kibbutz, for the festival weekend. They had a relaxed Friday night and then on Saturday they started to hear the noises and the shooting. Then we started to get WhatsApp messages from Avshalom saying ‘we are in trouble’ and ‘we can’t talk right now’. A few hours later it was all gone; four houses burned down.” Ruth, the matriarch of the family, was rescued from what was sadly a too familiar ordeal for her: “She is a holocaust survivor. She’s had her boy murdered, one child in captivity, her other granddaughter and her husband in captivity, and her great granddaughter as well. For a holocaust survivor who came to Israel from the horror of the Nazis to try and establish themselves – they lived very modestly when they started out. To see everything that she has built destroyed – brutally destroyed and violated

– for the second time in a lifetime.” Other members of the family who weren’t taken are suffering, mourning for their lost loved ones, and in a state of uncertainty surrounding the fate of seven others: “Ruth’s other granddaughter is about to give birth. Imagine that you are giving birth with your sister, your mother your auntie and your cousin all kidnapped. Basically, all of your support gone. And the torture of not knowing. We know of Avshalom, Lilach, and Eviatar’s deaths. We don’t know about the seven that were taken. We have no information. We don’t know if they are held together. Are the children with their parents, are the siblings together and able to comfort each other? Have they had a shower in the past 30 days? What are they eating? Difficult Times

LJRC Chair, Simon Myerson, offers some thoughts on the war in Israel and its effects on the Leeds community.

The situation in both Israel and Gaza continues to distress anyone with any humanity, and the community remains united around Israel. Israel is protecting its citizens as any country must do. Hamas, on the other hand, has stolen infrastructure and money to make weapons it aims at civilians, provided itself with protections it denies to those it governs, and is determined to use its own population and the hostages to achieve its aims. In Israel, the army is on the surface and the civilian population is in shelters. In Gaza, sadly, it is the other way around. Local politicians have called for a ceasefire. We understand the pressures they are under. The number of civilian deaths is truly distressing. It is tempting to reach for the easy option of calling for it all to stop, without engaging in the more difficult exercise of asking what that means, and who should be stopping. We have repeatedly made two points to them: first, no one in Hamas cares what you say and your influence in Israel is – politely expressed – limited. Better to focus on communal relations, at a time when the far-right remain ready to exploit the situation and encourage racism against Muslims, and when antisemitism in Leeds is (as is the regular pattern) up by the national increase, plus 30%. Antisemitic incidents in this area are 12 times higher than a year ago. Whether calling for a ceasefire is responsible, needs to be assessed in that light. Secondly, there was a ceasefire on 6th

October 2023. Hamas broke it. To call for a ceasefire now is really to call for a unilateral cessation of Israel’s attempt to prevent recurrence. So, be honest about that. Accept that your position actually rewards Hamas for taking hostages and using human shields, and reason that through. The University in Leeds is a tense place right now, and the police are involved in keeping it safe. If you know students, get in touch, and offer them a weekend away. The LJRC continues to offer support to our community. Our events are exceptionally well-attended, and we are regularly told that we deliver what the community wants to happen. We are proud of that, and proud of the people we serve. Political views certainly differ, and we look forward to a time when expressing those differences – in any direction – do not give comfort to those who wish Israel out of existence. Our Israeli community leads by example in demonstrating remarkable resilience and supporting each other. There is no denying that these are difficult times. We are united in praying for peace, and we feel unsettled. But I regularly reflect on how our ancestors would have felt facing the same hatred, but expressed in a way the government and state encouraged, and without the existence of Israel. In contrast, the unbelievable work of CST is supported by the police, and the government and opposition support what is right. We are, still, a fortunate generation.

It’s not you, it’s the food and the way you’re wired to want it. Experts Dr Jen and Dr David Unwin explore how you can change your body and mind in the year to come.

New Year’s Resolve Combining psychological expertise on food addiction and medical experience in providing a drug-free alternative to type two diabetes treatment with a low-carb diet, Dr Jen and Dr David Unwin are at the forefront of health professionals boycotting sugar. Beyond earning them a combined X (formerly Twitter) following of 123,300, they have also had their work covered in the BBC documentary The Truth About Carbs which was viewed by four million people and have collaborated on advising in five low carb cookbooks. It’s commonplace to have a tumultuous relationship with food which cycles between craving, satisfaction, guilt, repeat. David even admits its common for him to see patients cry with relief after discovering food addiction knowing that they haven’t just suffered a series of failed diets, but they have an overriding issue which provides the answer to everything. Jen recommends the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) six criteria for substance abuse to describe food addiction: “If you had to ditch all the other criteria, the last would be the most important which is continued use despite knowing it’s doing you harm.” David interjects: “But even just identifying with three out of the six, you would be considered to have an addictive relationship with food.” This continuation of harmful habits is often the time we introduce self-criticism and judgment, but what we should be turning our judgements towards is our food companies and cultural perceptions of food. David provides the tip: “Don’t eat anything you ever saw advertised. If you can’t even guess what the ingredients are, it’s a monstrous Frankenfood.” His argument is a sound one;

when was the last time you saw an advert for eggs? Our inclinations for sugar are also deeply rooted in our survival instincts. Jen reflects on our brain function on sugar, saying: “We have these urges which are non-verbal, we just feel them without thinking. They get combined with a message to your frontal lobes, the intelligent bit of your brain, to quiet it down.” This might not make sense that our brains would dumb us down when making decisions, but as Jen adds: “Sometimes we would have to do dangerous stuff to get food, so it’s a good idea that we’d be driven to do it without thinking or else we wouldn’t have done it and starved.”

If you can’t even guess what the ingredients are, it’s a monstrous Frankenfood. Acknowledging that our brains switch off our better judgement means it’s not our fault for misunderstanding our eating habits. David advises: “You can’t moderate something you’re addicted to” which Jen joined with: “The four times it’s really easy to make poor food choices is when you’re hungry, angry, lonely, or tired which you can remember with the acronym HALT.” Being prepared for these times is what the Unwin’s provide as their biggest tip – “Plan for success,” they both say. Don’t forget your relationship with food is a lifelong experiment to which everyone’s path will be different. Even after over 10 years of axing sugar Jen says she still feels the

cravings creep in, admitting: “I will always be a hardcore sugar and carbohydrate addict. For many years they were, in some way, the best thing in my life. Now I realise that one is too many and 1,000 is never enough so I just don’t have the first one.” Whereas David had a different experience with withdrawal confessing: “It took at least a year to get over Christmas. Also a yoga teacher herself, Melanie joined Charlotte after returning from a two year and a half year trip in Australia. Melanie missed the community which came with yoga, she saying the first thing she did when she reached any destination on her travels was to find a yoga studio. She remembers coming back to Leeds and wanting to feel grounded in the local community again, not long after,

she said: “I thought to myself, ‘I need to start teaching again and get myself out there’”. Changing World of Pharmacy LS17 has seen a transformation of the Alwoodley Medical Centre’s pharmacy with fabulous new branding and a new internal layout, all part of a new business with local family connections. JLife finds out what’s been going on and how it will benefit the community. The pharmacy at the Alwoodley Medical Centre is on a mission to re-invent pharmacy. Alwoodley’s premier pharmacy, formerly The Pharmacy Group will now be known as Pharmacy+Health since being bought by HubRx, founded by Daniel Lee, local entrepreneur and son of Leeds pharmacist, Rodney. The Pharmacy Group was originally founded in 1984 by Barry Lestner and his son David who ironically were in local competition with the Lee family. Jason Lestner will be continuing the local family connection as the COO of the new business, with Daniel assuming the role of CEO. Pharmacy+Health and has already seen a number of changes both structurally and operationally at the site. Noticeably the new interior means there will be a focus onmedical products available to purchase and there is now space for three state-of-the-art consultation rooms for the highly qualified

team to offer consultations in line with the NHS strategy to take pressure off the GPs. “Changes have been coming,” said

Daniel. “Independent pharmacies have been struggling for a while and are chronically underfunded and stretched with increasing costs. By using our amazing, automated pharmacy hub, HubRx, the pharmacy teams can focus their time e on delivering a wide range of clinical services, funded by NHS and privately such as weight loss, vaccinations, test and treat, and non-critical every day common conditions. We want to educate everyone that our clinical pharmacists can provide the care and treatment you need without a trip to the GP.” So what is the futuristic HubRx all about? “It is the UK’s first automated hub and spoke facility of its kind,” Daniel says. “An amazing 40,000 sq. ft facility with a £10 million investment, being trialled here in Leeds. Dispensing of repeat prescriptions will be undertaken from the automated facility rather than in the local pharmacy ensuring dispensing accuracy and saving valuable time in every step of the process. It’s a massive positive for smaller pharmacy groups as the costs for prescriptions using automated

dispensing tech externally is lower allowing our teams to offer more clinical services.” Jason was keen to stress how the new look pharmacy and its technology will benefit the community: “Previously customers would re-order a prescription online, then coming a couple of days later hoping it would be ready. Now they will get a text message 48 hours after the order to say it’s ready to collect. We are offering so much more to patients and supporting the GPs, and customers can now book appointments on our new website for a variety of services.” Following the trial at Alwoodley, the plan is to roll out the new look across their group of over 50 pharmacies, and to offer the use of Hubrx to small independent groups to be able to benefit. OPTICAL Dry Eye With James Daly, Founder of James Daly Opticians Dry eye is a common condition affecting one in four people in the UK. The normal tear fluid that lubricates the eyes is made up of three layers – an oily (lipid) layer, a watery (aqueous) layer, and a sticky (mucous) layer – and these normal tears are what prevent our eyes from feeling dry.

What is dry eye?

People with dry eye either don’t make enough normal (lubricating) tears or the ones that they make are of poor quality, causing the tears to dry up too quickly and the front of the eye to become dry and irritated. As a result, dry eye can be uncomfortable and cause the eye to produce the watery type of tears. If your eyelids are sore and red, you may

also have another condition called blepharitis. Blepharitis is a condition that affects the eyelids making them sore and inflamed. If the eyelid glands become blocked, you may have a condition called meibomian gland dysfunction. It is quite common to have a combination of these conditions. Dry eye doesn’t tend to cause serious damage to the eyes, but it can be very uncomfortable. Severe cases do have a risk of causing long-term damage, but fortunately these are rare.

Symptoms

People with dry eye may get some or all of the following symptoms. 1. A sandy or gritty feeling 2. Sore eyes 3. Uncomfortable and sometimes painful eyes 4. An itching or burning sensation 5. Short-term blurred vision 6. Watery eyes, as if you are crying (having watery eyes can mean you are producing poorquality tears and actually have dry eyes)

Treatment

Most cases of dry eye tend to be a long-term condition, meaning that you’ll need ongoing treatment. There are lots of different types of drops and gels that can help your eyes feel more comfortable. The best ones don’t have preservatives in them, or if they do they contain very gentle preservatives, which helps to reduce irritation. They may also contain an ingredient called sodium hyaluronate, known to be very effective in treating the condition. It’s important to use the correct type of drops. The wrong drops are unlikely to cause any harm, but they won’t help as much. If your drops aren’t working or you’re not sure which drops to use, your local optometrist can advise you and may be able to offer other treatment options.

Meditation Station Meditation has become a hot topic in the past five years after many celebrities, CEOs, and athletes have popularised the practice after doting on it to improve their performance. Create a lasting meditation habit as a healthy resolution this new year.

With many benefits including stress reduction, increasing self-awareness, improving self-esteem, increased tolerance to chronic pain leading to better performance, meditation has been on the rise. Among this pop science, celebrity endorsed, podcast fuelled craze the original message of meditation has been buried and can feel like another item on your dutiful ‘I should do this because it’s good for my health’ list. Which everyone who adds ‘exercise more’ to their new years resolutions each year knows, rarely gets done.

Be realistic

Douglas M. Burns wrote: “When asked, ‘What have you gained from meditation?’, the answer should be: ‘It is not what I have gained that is important but rather what I have diminished, namely, greed, hatred, and delusion.’” This quote is famously varied throughout texts on meditation and sets up one of the biggest pieces of advice about beginning a meditation habit, leave behind any former ideas of meditation or how meditation will benefit your life. If you want to commit to a consistent meditation

habit then do it because you wish to observe your mind, not out of a forceful sense of obligation or in hope of miraculous transformation.

Start small

Choose your path

When you begin meditating you may want to start small with only 10 minutes or less per day since this is a new experience for you. If you’re struggling to insert meditation into your day, try keeping the practice short and attach it to something you already do regularly, this could mean you meditate after brushing your teeth, after you’ve had dinner, or after getting out the shower. During a meditation practice you frequently focus your attention on a particular sensation, most frequently the breath or the body, this is called an anchor. By keeping your focus on the anchor, when the mind starts to wander (and it will) you can bring it back to your anchor. Remember, you are not trying to clear your mind, this may happen for moments at a

Find a meditation inspiration or resource which resonates with you. If you want beginner daily guided meditations where you can try many different types of meditation in one place, a meditation app such as Calm or Headspace is a great option to consider. Or if you want simplicity with just you and a timer on your phone, you may wish to read about meditation first. Many leading meditation teachers have books in which they describe their approach to meditation and mindfulness. Great starter books include Wherever You Go There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn, The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, and The Headspace Guide to Meditation and Mindfulness by Andy Puddicombe. String Theory ARTS INTERVIEW

Jewish violinist Esther Abrami gives us a sneak peek at her new album and tells the incredible story of her grandmother’s violin.

Despite being just 26 years old, Esther Abrami has already had quite the career. The violinist studied at the Royal College of Music and completed her master's degree at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, for which she received a full scholarship. In 2019, she became the first classical musician ever to win the ‘Social Media Superstar’ category at the Global Awards and in 2021 she was featured in Classic FM's ‘30 under 30 Classical Artists to Watch’ series, curated by Julian Lloyd Webber and was listed as a ‘Rising Star’ by BBC Music Magazine. In 2021 she was signed to Sony Classical and made her Royal Albert Hall debut in 2022. In the UK, Esther Abrami is considered one of the most promising young classical artists of her generation and has been appointed Creative Partner and Artist in Residence by the English Symphony Orchestra. With such an impressive list of accolades already, it’s no surprise that Esther started learning the violin from a young age, as she tells us: “My first introduction to the violin was through my grandmother, who was a violinist herself. She introduced me to it when I was three years old, using the violin that she used to play on. I didn’t start lessons until I was nine or 10 years old, when I expressed a real interest in lesson. I loved it straight away. I loved the sound of the violin. I remember going to a concert and I love the music and how free and full of life they were when they were playing.” Esther still has her grandma’s violin, a family heirloom with a tremendous story behind it: “I can’t play the violin anymore because it’s kid sized, but it has

a very special story. It survived the Second World War. My grandmother’s family lived in a village in the north of France. They escaped and left everything in the house, as you had to. When they came back, everything had been stolen. The only things that were still there was a turtle which had survived somehow by eating grass, and the violin, which no one had thought valuable enough to steal.” Recently, Esther brought out a new album entitled Cinéma, which heavily features music from film and TV soundtracks: “You can find music from anime, music from big films, and smaller films, and quite a lot of French cinema. Each of them has a special meaning to me. As a classical musician I’m very passionate about trying to bring this genre to a wider audience and younger audience, and I find that lots of movie scores are composed in a classical way.” Speaking of drawing in a younger audience, Esther has made a name for herself on TikTok, with over 415,000 followers, and uses the platform to highlight women in classical music: “That has a lot to do with my upbringing in that, during all my years of study, I never really had role models, and I want it to be different for the next generation. I think it’s mad that none of the composers we all play are women. Worn tyres increase your chances of skidding, aquaplaning and being in an accident. It can also result in fines of up to £10,000 (£2,500 per tyre) and 12 penalty points. Legally, the tread depth must be at least 1.6mm. However, experts recommend a depth of 2-3mm. There are a few ways to check the tyre tread depth, including tread depth gauges, tyre tread indicators and various tools in professional garages. However, we recommend the 20p test: • pump each tyre up – the test doesn’t work if they’re flat • place a 20p into the groove of a tyre • if you can’t see the coin’s outer band, your tyres are above the legal limit • if you can see the coin’s outer band,

Check coolant levels

Coolant cools down your engine, prevents rust and stops freezing. It’s a mixture of antifreeze and water. It’s always good for your car, but it’s essential in sub-zero temperatures. You should regularly check your engine’s coolant level and replenish it when needed. Only try to change the coolant when the engine is off, or you’ll burn yourself. The ideal coolant level is between the min/ max in the tank but check your car’s manual. You need a protection level of at least -25°C.

Maintain your lights

Visibility is difficult in winter, so you need reliable, well-maintained lights. You should visually check your vehicle’s lights regularly and if a light’s out, replace it before making your next journey. Legally, all your car’s exterior lights must be operational – that’s everything from the headlights to indicators and even the number plate bulb. This is when to use your different lights:

• dipped headlights – dusk, night and in poor visibility • high or full beam – when conditions are bad Turn your high or full-beam headlights back to dipped if you see another driver.

Check your wipers

In winter, your windscreen can get dirty much quicker from rain, ice, salt and muddy water. This means having working wipers and filled windscreen wash is important. If your wipers are faulty or windscreen wash is empty, you can be stopped by the police for a few motoring offences. Avoid this by: • making sure your wiper blades are clean and don’t leave smears/streaks • running your fingers along the wipers to check for splits • not using washing-up liquid in your washer reservoir • using washer fluid that can withstand temperatures of at least -15°C Experts recommend you change wiper blades every 12 months. Dan Cohen, Councillor for Alwoodley, talks Pride Awards, Israel, and the year end celebrations. Welcome to my final JLife column for this year. I must begin this month’s column with a huge thank you to all the organisers of this year’s Leeds Jewish Community Pride Awards and massive congratulations to all the very worthy winners – including our own JLife Editor Elliot Landy, who was also hosting the event… it was the first time I’ve seen him lost for word … a good moment, while it lasted, all too briefly). With the terrible times in Israel and the Middle East at the moment, with many members of our community directly impacted by the awful events, coming together to celebrate some of the good things in our community and having in mind those who are suffering, was a needed lift. It is a truth that adversity really does deliver unity and we have seen that in the recent tragic weeks. I can also not let the opportunity pass to thank all those who nominated and selected me to also receive an award. I was completely shocked and truly overwhelmed. I say it often, but that doesn’t mean I mean it any less, being your ward councillor is a tremendous honour and privilege. I never take it for granted and hope you will allow me to work on behalf of all of you for many years to come.

HOUSING Preparing for Winter With Mark Grandfield, Chief Executive at Leeds Jewish Housing Association We’ve been helping people and managing homes for decades now, so here at Leeds Jewish Housing Association we can offer useful tips that might help our tenants and the wider community get ready for, and through these cold winter months. Home maintenance issues often become more obvious and urgent in winter, please make sure your heating and lighting are working, especially lighting around entrance doors, nobody wants to slip on wet leaves. Those pesky leaves also block gutters and cause overflows which if dramatic and left blocked can lead to more concerning issues with damp inside your home, take a look next time it’s raining. It’s probably also time

to cover up any exposed outside pipework or taps from the frost, uninsulated pipework in lofts can also be problematic when the temperature outside plummets. We’re all suffering from the increased cost of central heating, if you can, try and heat your home even to a lower temperature over a longer period rather than short burst periods at a high temperature, it will likely be more efficient. Seek out those draughts, a good old fashioned draught excluder can make a world of difference, plus good heavy curtains to keep in the heat. Homes are made by people so look after them in winter too, ‘soup season’ as some call it. Keep an eye on the forecast especially for those cold snaps when you’re planning your week ahead. If the weather is going to be bad should you top up those kitchen cupboards now? Do you need to consider

your repeat prescriptions a little earlier than usual? And check any regular medicine stocks aren’t too low. Many of us are eligible for the free flu jab or COVID vaccinations, check with your GP or NHS online. If you are going out the sensible approach has to be layers, hats, gloves and sensible shoes (even if you’re a teenager). Finally, take a moment to think who else might need our support over winter, those neighbours, family and friends who might not cope or get out so well for the next few months and with shorter days may feel more isolated. A HEARTENING VISIT

Granddaughter of Leeds-born founder of WIZO, Rebecca Sieff, visited Leeds to offer inspiration to the organisation’s members.

Flying in from Israel only days after the atrocities, Micaela Ziv, granddaughter of Leeds-born founder of WIZO, Rebecca Sieff, visited Leeds to inspire members with her family’s history. She told a story of pioneering women, travelling alone to British Mandate Palestine in 1919, to see for themselves the living conditions of families, and what the most urgent problems were. They saw that women needed to be empowered and support themselves by learning new skills such as agriculture and creating baby homes for orphaned or abandoned babies. This led to the establishing of Israel’s social welfare system itself. Rebecca founded WIZO federations around the world, as well as finding the courage to travel to Berlin in the 1936 and 1937 to rescue Jewish children. Her legacy, the empowerment of women and social justice, lives on today in modern WIZO, continuing to fight for policy change and new legislation, With over 250,000 members in 50 countries worldwide, WIZO is now the largest social welfare organisation in Israel, helping vulnerable and disadvantaged Israeli citizens, regardless of age, race, or religion, to become self-sufficient and contributing members of society. Homeless Street Angels will be raising money this holiday season with a charity single. Homeless Street Angels is a Chapel Allerton based charity supporting people on the streets with a weekly outreach as well as hundreds in their homes who have either been rescued from the streets or were in danger of becoming homeless. Twins Becky and Shelley set up Homeless Street Angels six years ago following the death of their beloved sister Abi who had suffered difficult times and died at the age of 39. It began with one single outreach at Christmas and now has a core team of 50 volunteers which means than 6,000 hot meals have been handed out and 8,500 household items have been sourced and delivered to those who have found homes. Each week with a team entirely made up of volunteers more than a hundred people are given a hot meal, sleeping bags, clothes, and toiletries, but more importantly they are served with love and hugs. They also run a food bank which with ever increasing need is now used by 500 families. This year with the help of musical director Mark Walker who has worked with Westlife, Will Young, The Jacksons and Simply Red the charity has created a Christmas single with vocals by Claire Brooke, and Jonathan Ansell from G4. ‘There are Angels on Earth’ is not only an appropriate message for this time of year but is accompanied by a heartwarming video which shows the team at work and the recording of the single. Boutiques, restaurants, and family attractions; the leisure hub of Street Lane has it all! Leeds is full of small, vibrant areas offering a wealth of attractions and a unique atmosphere each of their own. You’ll find yourself spoiled for choice. Whether you’re in the mood for classic British pub fare, international cuisine, or gourmet dining, you’ll find it here. The area’s charming cafes are perfect for a leisurely brunch or a quick coffee break. Even some of the area’s old favourites are reinventing themselves, with Pizza Express having completed its refurb at the end of August. Fans of the pizza chain will be blown away by the transformation, with the new décor showing of an understated jungle theme, including hand drawn wallpaper. Pizza Express isn’t the only Street Lane restaurant making changes, however, with La Petite café back open and under new management. The area has also recently welcomed a new venture from The Olive Branch, in the shape of a new tapas and wine bar, complete with a bottomless brunch and breakfast buffet. Saturday night is bagel night, as Street Lane Bakery has undergone a massive refit and launched a new menu and eating area, while just off the main drag, The Leeds Deli has opened a new café for local toddlers just next door on the Chelwood parade. Economics | Daniel Kahneman

Daniel Kahneman was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, while his mother was visiting her extended family. Kahneman grew up in Paris and remained in the city under Nazi occupation. After his father’s death in 1944, he moved with his mother and sister to Palestine. He studied psychology at Hebrew University and the University of California. He won the Nobel Prize in Economics for his work combining psychology with economic theory, especially concerning human judgement making under uncertainty.

Peace | Józef Rotblat

Józef Rotblat was born in Poland in 1908. He studied physics and took up research in the UK in 1939. His work on splitting the atom led him to the conclusion that it was possible to produce an atomic bomb and he worked on the Manhattan Project, before withdrawing on moral grounds. Post-Second World War Rotblat was a leading voice advocating nuclear disarmament with the Pugwash movement, which he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with in 1995.

Physics | Albert Einstein

Probably the most well-known Nobel Prize winner of them all, Albert Einstein grew up in Munich, where his father founded an electrical engineering company. After studying at the ETH university in Zurich, Einstein worked at the patent office in Bern, during which time he produced several pioneering works in the field of physics. After the Nazis seized power in Germany, Einstein immigrated to the US, where he worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his services to Theoretical Physics, and his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect.

Literature | Harold Pinter

Harold Pinter was a British playwright, screenwriter, director, and actor born in 1930. The Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to him in 2005 as “his plays uncovers the precipice under everyday prattle and forces entry into oppression’s closed rooms”. His best-known plays include The Birthday Party, The Homecoming, and Betrayal, each of which he adapted for the screen. His screenplay adaptations of others’ works include The Servant, The Go-Between, The French Lieutenant’s Woman, The Trial, and Sleuth.

Chemistry | Adolf von Baeyer

Adolf von Baeyer was born in 1835 and raised in Berlin. As a student, he attended several universities, and was taught by several major figures of German chemistry. Beginning in the 1860s, von Baeyer performed a series of studies on the chemistry of dyes. These led to the production of several dyes from coal tar, making production cheaper. The most important of these was indigo dye which could now be produced industrially instead of being extracted from plants. Von Bayer was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1905.

A Noble Pursuit

When Alfred Nobel a Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, businessman, and philanthropist – signed his will on 27th November 1895, it is hard to say whether he had any idea of the controversy the document would cause. The will contained instructions that the majority of his wealth would go, not to his family, but to creating a prize recognising those whose achievements have benefited humankind. Though Nobel died in 1896, his family opposed the establishment of the Nobel Prize, and the prize awarders he named refused to follow his wishes. It was five years before the first Nobel Prize could be awarded in 1901. In the 122 years since the first Nobel Prize was handed out, 965 people have been awarded the Nobel Prize or the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences (which was established slightly later in 1968). A staggering 214 of those awarded a Nobel prize have been Jewish, totalling 22% of recipients. Here are some highlights.

Rita Levi-Montalcini was born in Turin, Italy, to a wealthy Jewish family. Her father was an electrical engineer and mathematician, her mother an artist. In 1946, LeviMontalcini was invited to work at Washington University in St. Louis and remained there for 30 years before finally returning to Italy, where she lived in Rome. In 1952, she succeeded in isolating a substance harvested from tumours in mice that caused vigorous nervous system growth in chicken embryos. The discovery these growth factors has provided a deeper understanding of medical problems such as deformities, senile dementia, delayed wound healing, and tumour diseases. She received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for this work in 1986.

Local Jewish Poet Hayden Cohen shares his view on the war in Israel. Jewish poet, Hayden Cohen, is a Leeds local returning after living in London for seven years. He is a Writer, Poet, and Musician who uses his Jewish faith as inspiration for many of his projects which has earned him the collaboration of institutions such as the Jewish Volunteering Network and Jewish Renaissance. His podcast, The Bagel Podcast, provides uplifting content for the UK Jewish community; inviting on prominent Jewish guests to talk about important subjects to the community. Hayden comments on the effect of poetry and language at this time: “Since the terrible events of 7th October it’s been difficult to process it all. Social media has been especially toxic and has seen many of us retreat to our corners dispelling anyone else as ‘the other’. I’ve seen people recklessly using language to cause as much damage and pain as possible.

Language matters as it’s the main tool of clear communication but at the moment, we are seemingly unable or unwilling to agree on the definition of many words. Those who gain power through conflict benefit from this ambiguity and we must not let that happen. When in doubt, be kind.”

Feast of Feasts Leeds Marriott’s Executive Chef, Nick Mcculloch, provides JLife’s Emily Stone with a banqueting taster menu to remember.

As well as offering 17 impressive spaces for holding private events, Leeds Marriott also has an exceptional banqueting menu, put together by the venue’s Executive Chef Nick Mcculloch. I and a companion had the pleasure of reviewing the banqueting offering, which absolutely lived up to the hype. The culinary journey was nothing short of a masterpiece, showcasing a perfect blend of flavours, textures, and creativity that left a lasting impression. For starters we were given Whipped Goat’s Cheese Salad with Candied Beetroot and Smoked Mackerel with a Potato and Caper Salad and Crispy Onions. The goats cheese salad was a huge hit. The smooth, creamy goat cheese paired with the earthy sweetness of the candied beetroot, enhanced by the beetroot puree and a delightful beet powder, created a harmonious explosion of flavours. The smoked mackerel was equally exquisite. The savoury flavour of the mackerel, the crispy texture of the onions, and the hearty potato salad formed a triumphant trio of taste and texture. Next came the main courses, which were nothing short of spectacular. The Pan-Seared Duck Breast, accompanied by a Confit Duck Cottage Pie, Roast Plum, Tenderstem Broccoli, and a Rosemary Jus; Pan-Fried Fillet of Stone Bass, served with

Potato Gratin, Green Beans, Confit Onion, and White Wine Sauce; and a Wild Mushroom Risotto. The duck was a masterpiece. Perfectly cooked, tender, and with a lovely, sweet flavour, it was definitely one of the high points of the menu. The cottage pie was a lovely, comforting surprise and the plum added a sweet and tangy note, while the broccoli provided a refreshing contrast. The jus tied everything together beautifully, making it a well-balanced plate. The stone bass also shone, with a hearty portion and satisfyingly crispy skin. The fish was perfectly flaky and paired wonderfully with the rich potato gratin and rich white wine sauce. The dish showcased a perfect balance of flavours and textures. The risotto was a vegetarian’s dream leaving both my companion and I wondering how Chef Nick had managed to make a dish without any meat so full of flavour. Creamy and rich, it was an umami delight with a mix of wild mushrooms that completed the dish. Three delicious desserts soon arrived for a fitting grand finale. An Aussie Pavlova with Cream, Mango and Passionfruit Sauce, Kiwi and Berries; Sticky Toffee Pudding

with Clotted Cream Ice Cream, Drunken Rum Dates, and Toffee Sauce; and White Chocolate Cheesecake with Wild Berry Compote and Vanilla Crème Anglaise. The pavlova saw Chef Nick going back to his Australian Roots. The crispy shell, the sweet mango and passionfruit sauce, and the fresh fruit were a perfect ending to a sumptuous meal. The edible flowers on top meant that the dish was an Instagram-worthy riot of colours as well. The sticky toffee pudding was a warm and comforting delight. The combination of moist toffee pudding, rich clotted cream ice cream, and the boozy kick of rum-infused dates provided a welcome sharpness, while the white chocolate cheesecake was a work of art, velvety and rich, and the berry compote added a burst of fruity sharpness. Leeds Marriott’s banqueting offerings for events are a tier above your standard event catering fare. The creativity and execution of each dish were exemplary, and the presentation was a feast for the eyes, sure to wow at any special occasion. Book Price With Gary Don, your antiques expert and Auctioneer

An 18th century copy of Tikkunei Shabbat (an amalgam of Hebrew prayers and devotions for the Sabbath) was recently sold in an auction for £71,250! The palm sized prayer book in its original binding and slipcase was owned by retired teachers from Grange-over-Sands and is thought to have been in their family for over 50 years. It was beautifully illuminated on many of its pages. It was identified by a curator of Hebrew and Christian Orient collections at the British Library. The 85-leaf manuscript contained Sabbath hymns, the prayer for the New Moon, and Perek Shirah, an ancient hymn of praise in which every created thing, from the animate to the celestial, thanks G-d for its existence. Part of the text

is written in Rashi unvocalised script, a semi-incursive script based on 15th century Sephardic handwriting. The book states it belonged to Abraham ben Meir Emden and the date given is Thursday 13 Shevat, 5517 which corresponds to February 3rd, 1757. Also uncovered was a connection to German rabbi Jacob Emden (1697-1776), a champion of Orthodox Judaism. It might be worth checking your books you never know, you might have a treasure among them! Over a year on from the disastrous Liz Truss Mini Budget of September 2023, we look back on 12 months in the property market characterised by high interest rates and a certain degree of pessimism from the various commentators out there in the media. On reflection, I’m happy to say that it seems the doomsayers, on this occasion,

seem to have got it wrong. From our numbers, we can see a return of what seems to be a “normal market”. All our data points towards a market which is very similar to that of 2017-2019. No big headlines, just an ordinary market with a good choice of property and still plenty of buyers out there hoping to purchase. The key question on everyone’s mind as always is house prices. As I’ve been saying for several months now, we have seen some house price corrections since the postpandemic boom. But exactly what does this look like? Rightmove’s October House Price Index stated a 0.5% rise in asking prices in October – the smallest average asking price increase at this time of year since 2008. I would say this is a good indication and, in

my eyes, prices have fallen across our market by around 6-8% in 2023. Looking ahead as we edge closer towards the New Year, we see lending as a critical factor. Fortunately, the Bank of England has recently decided to maintain interest rates at 5.25%. While not directly influencing mortgage rates, this decision reflects the broader lending environment. The hope is for rates to hold and begin to come back down to around 4% in 2024, providing a healthy environment to facilitate transactions. Manningstainton.co.uk

Alex Palmer, Founder of Leeds-based interactive theatre company Riptide tells us all about its upcoming performance, Intermission which runs in the city until 23rd December.

Alex Palmer, Founder and Creative Director of interactive theatre company Riptide developed the Lost Connections series in response to our disconnected modern world, speaking up about us being the loneliest generation ever to live. Though he argues we are more “connected”, studies have shown we are lonelier than ever, and depression is on the rise. When asked ‘How many people can you turn to in a crisis?’ studies show in the UK and US the most common answer is now zero, a number which has been dwindling for the past 20 years. Intermission is the antidote to our modern loneliness crisis and Riptide makes it clear that the first step to connecting with others is reconnecting with yourself.

Hi Alex! What can audiences expect from Intermission if they’ve never seen interactive theatre before?

Hello! Our audiences are the centre focus of our work, so we don’t put on plays, we create experiences that put you at the centre of them. They definitely do have a story, but we don’t put on Hamlet, for example. The story of Intermission involves 10 different scenes, which we’re calling treatments, and just to give you a flavour of them, one is a massage, one of them is a kind of Tai Chi movement class, one of them might feel a little bit like a life

coaching session, and I won’t spoil the others, but they’re all very different and they’re all one on one. So, it’s a one actor, one audience member – it should feel a little bit like a spa mixed with a theatre show. You’re not a voyeur in our work, we definitely see you. A Riptide trope is that we make each performance bespoke to our audience members, we know a lot about you before you arrive by using a pre-show questionnaire usually and that’s how we tailor the experience to you in Intermission.

What effect do you hope Intermission will have on people?

The original concept was that this would be the halftime show of your life. What would you do if you could pause your life for 90 minutes? What would you want to happen? Some people would just want to get up and have a nap, some people would like to reflect, some people might choose to write lists, or some people might want to dance and have a party. We’ve taken all those ideas and we put them into a show. This could be the space that you realise you need to quit your job if you really hate it; it

could be the impetus that you need to stop smoking; it could be the reminder that you need to call a family member if you haven’t done for months. That’s the deeper aspect of it.

How does Riptide offer a health and wellness aspect with its work?

I started Riptide with the goal of giving audiences extraordinary experiences. Questioning what does it feel like to become part of an art heist when you take a painting off the wall of an art gallery? That kind of adrenaline rush experience, but for this one the experience is ‘What does it feel like to be the centre of attention for 90 minutes and to feel to feel guided, to feel held, to feel seen, and to feel genuinely cared for?’. I don’t think those experiences really exist, other than maybe if you do therapy or if you have a close-knit community, friends or religion that has that community aspect. But I think other than that, if you don’t have those things, where else is there that you feel connected? So, for me Riptide is now becoming much more about giving audiences that feeling of being special and important and the star of the show. I think seeing the impact of that type of work has shifted us to use our skills in building audience experience for a socially conscious purpose and it’s just really lovely. If you have the skills, why wouldn’t you want to make a genuine impact on how people live and also try and entertain them on the way? We’ve all seen a picture from a runway and thought: who would wear that? At times even the models, whose careers rely on them being unattainably attractive, can’t seem to pull off these wacky designs. When these weird and wonderful outfits hit the catwalk it’s easy to think of high fashion and high street fashion as two separate entities, but if you can learn to read the subtleties from the most popular fashion shows then you’ll be on track for the next year of fashion trends.

“But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean. And you’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns.” Meryl Streep’s famed monologue in The Devil Wears Prada captures this concept perfectly, it may take time to get down to high street prices but every colour, cut, and fabric has its roots in a top designer’s collection. We may have attributed this year’s pink craze to the 2023 release of the Barbie film but much sooner, in 2022s autumn/winter fashion shows, designers such as Chanel included multiple pink pieces in its show and Valentino went so far as to have a completely pink venue with monochromatic pink outfits.

Being ahead of the curve leaves you with one problem, you might be too early to a trend to find an affordable version of it. Shops like H&M are known for runway knockoffs, but it takes time to get to them. It’s the curse of being too fashionable, so it’s best to keep an open mind when looking for clothes that fit your inspiration and get savvy and experimental with what you can find. Our biggest tip is to shop vintage, though this may seem counterintuitive shopping for your new look through old styles, fashion regularly takes inspiration from eras gone by. You might just find the fabric, silhouette, or colour you’re looking for by looking back.

A super new Italian restaurant has opened on Otley Road in Far Headingley. With a menu filled with authentic classic Italian dishes made with fresh ingredients, and receiving topnotch reviews for its service and food, the team was sent to enjoy a menu tasting. And we weren’t disappointed, owners Dhionist and Kol, well known to the North Leeds fraternity having worked at some fine restaurants in the area, have partnered up to create an offering with real quality, and value. A cold midweek evening and only a few months in, yet the place was bustling as people discover this exciting new eatery. The taster menu prepared for our table allowed us to sample some of the highlights on a very wide-ranging menu, with many vegetarian and GF options. Loving the variety on offer, once our photographer had done his work we tucked in to the impressive feast. The detail is there to see and taste, all prepared with genuine passion. The succulent meat and light fresh fish dishes were excellent, plentiful and laced with tasty sauces adding that extra touch., while the pizza and Calzones cooked to perfection, nice and crisp with flavoursome toppings. But just as important in a new restaurant is the personal service, the atmosphere is friendly and informal with a warm welcome. Plus it won’t break the bank, which makes a refreshing change around these parts. Even better, Casa Alba is running a £14.95 two course set menu on Tuesday to Friday 5 to 7pm and weekends between 12 and 5pm when kids under 12 can eat free. Holocaust Centre North has received the King’s Award for Voluntary Service 2023 as part of King Charles’ birthday honours list. Holocaust Centre North has received the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service 2023. This is an incredible honour and a tremendous achievement in recognition of the Centre’s remarkable volunteers – many of whom are first, second and third generation survivors – and the outstanding contribution they have made in both the running of the Centre based at the University of Huddersfield and in the preservation of history. This is the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK and is equivalent to an MBE. Holocaust Centre North is one of 262 local charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to achieve this esteemed award this year – and only one of 29 specifically from Yorkshire. Their work, along with others from across the UK, serves as a reminder of all the ways fantastic and selfless volunteers are contributing to their local communities and working to make life better for those around them. Service was created in 2002 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee and, following his accession, His Majesty emphasised his desire to continue the Award. Recipients are announced annually on 14th November, The King’s Birthday. Martin Kapel BEM, who is 93 years old and came to the UK as a child refugee on the Kindertransport and gives talks to school on a voluntary capacity said: “Receiving the King’s Award for Voluntary Service for our organisation is a profound honour that validates the efforts of every volunteer. It’s a tribute to the spirit of service over self, and to me personally, it’s an affirmation that every small act of kindness contributes to a legacy of change. I and other survivors of the Holocaust gathered around Holocaust Centre North because we believe that by sharing our stories of persecution, the world can grow more compassionate. This award is a celebration of community strength.”

LJRC Operations Officer Alan Benstock represents the Leeds community at Festival of Remembrance. This year saw the eleventh Festival of Remembrance take place in honour of fallen soldiers. It is organised by the multi-faith airport chaplaincy which includes three Jewish members - Joseph Sandler and Rabbi Captain Nir Nadav, both from Manchester, and LJRC Operations Officer Alan Benstock. For the first time the Standard of Greater Manchester of AJEX was paraded with the other standards as part this year’s Festival of Remembrance under Concorde G-BOAC at the Runway Visitor Park Manchester Airport, last Thursday. It was carried by Dan Millan. The Festival included video presentations from veterans and the Royal British Legion, drill displays by RAF Air Cadets, Sea Cadets and Royal Marine Cadet and music from the band of Greater Manchester Wing RAF air cadets. The Lord Lieutenant, High Sheriff and Lord Mayor of Greater Manchester, together with representatives of the airport’s senior management joined over 450 members of the staff and public under the iconic aircraft for the Festival. Rabbi Nir who is also Chaplain to HM Forces was invited to give the address. RAF Ringway, which was located at what is now the site of Manchester airport, was the location for much military activity including 613 (City Of Manchester) Squadron, the Gilder Pilot and Parachute Regiments, Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, Ait Transport Auxiliary, Special Operations Executive and the Polish Parachute Brigade.

Israeli Device Protects Bees

Israeli startup ToBe has developed a device that releases precise amounts of miticides in beehives to rid them of these parasites without harming the bees themselves. Since the early 20th century, the Varroa mite has spread from Asia to colonies of Western honey bees – the primary species used for pollination of our crops – in almost every part of the world. Avner Einav, VP of product at ToBe, explains that the mites infect beehives with several kinds of viruses and cause 30 to 60 percent of colony losses every year: “These mites don’t just affect the bees,” he says. “They affect all of us.” The HiveMaster emits tiny pulses of pesticide gas which ensures the treatment spreads around the hive evenly. It uses sensors and smart algorithms to understand the health of the colony and determine the activity of the bees before proceeding.

Blast Proof Panels Save Israeli Lives

Since 1992, Israeli law has dictated that a mamad (a bomb-proof space) – must be installed in all new residential and industrial buildings. But there are still millions of Israeli citizens living in homes constructed prior to that, who are left vulnerable to air strikes. Israeli startup Ortech Defence Systems has developed patented wall panels that which can protect any room in any kind of building against blast hits, fragmentation, and even forced entry. The panels, which can be fully applied to a room within just a week, are made of a combination of polymers and fiberglass that are constructed over steel beams.

ELOR Recieves National Award

The East Leeds Orbital Route (ELOR) has won the Transport Project of the Year at the 2023 British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA). After the face-to-face review by a panel of expert judges, the East Leeds Orbital Route was singled out from an exceptionally strong field. It didn’t just deliver a road, rather it delivered a valuable community asset where vehicle travel is complemented by

safe, sustainable active travel and equestrian routes, as much a local amenity, as a road. The judges reflected on how the entire team collaborated to deliver social value for the region by not only unlocking much-needed homes but also providing opportunities for children of all ages to learn about the construction industry. DOWN TO BUSINESS The latest UK Israel Business Breakfast, which took place just days after the Hamas attack on Shemini Atzeret, showed the power of unity in distressing times.

The most recent UK Israel Business Breakfast began with a poignant word from Colin Glass OBE, discussing the violence in Israel: “The situation is Israel, which started last Shabbat, the happiest Jewish day of the year prior to Simchat Torah, coincided with the barbaric attack by Hamas, the terrorists – not militants – ruling Gaza. This attack shocked to the core not only every Israeli and every Jew in the diaspora, but also right-minded people throughout the world.” Colin then went on to praise the support shown at the recent vigil in Millenium Square and read a message of support from Paul Gross of Chef Works, the meeting sponsor.

Colin also introduced Dr Ben Martyn, who is the Executive Lead for Investment in International Partnerships and the Northern Health Science Alliance (NHSA). Ben is currently helping Israeli health tech companies pilot their tech in the UK. He began with a word about the violence in Israel, offering support and solidarity from both him and the NHSA. Ben then went on to disclose the details of a new programme run by the NHSA which will bring several Israeli companies to our region: “Here in the north of England we have a very strong life sciences cluster, but we also have a lot of inequality and ill health in our region, as we know. The cost on productivity of ill health in our region is about £13 billion. With that in mind we’re big advocates of life science research where it can make a big impact on our patients. We’ve worked by closely with the Israeli Innovation Authority, the British Embassy, and Tech Hub Israel, to run

We’re delighted to announce that we now have six of those companies coming to the UK.” The main speaker was Ofer Fohrer, the Minister for Economic Affairs at the Embassy of Israel in London, who kept his appointment despite the situation, and spoke to the audience over Zoom: “My plan was to be there with you in-person and present a story of a country that started as a small economy and become a global technology powerhouse. However, due to the war I would like, instead, to share with you some of the difficult feelings I am experiencing as an Israeli and a Jew. “At the age of 42, I’ve seen numerous clashes between Israeli and Palestinian forces, and yet I’ve never before experienced such feelings. I’m truly proud to define myself as an Israeli and a Zionist. When I completed high school, it was clear to me that I would volunteer for combat service. After I completed that, and finished university, I began my career. Yet, I felt the desire to do something different than working in the private sector. Therefore, when the opportunity arose, I left a comfortable job for a role in the public sector, presenting Israel abroad.” “The images that began circulating this week left me nauseous, leaving me feeling that

even Israel, the country that was established as a home for Jewish people, with one of the most advanced militaries in the Middle East, failed when it was attacked by bloodthirsty terrorists. These images remind me of darker times I heard about from my grandmother, when Jews were persecuted. I will not lie, I have found myself feeling a toxic cocktail of anger, disappointment, and sorrow. However, I want to channel my feelings into a different place. A place of rebuilding, growth, and strengthening the business relationship which I am in charge of.”

Ofer then spoke of the support he had received since the attack by Hamas: “I’ve received numerous touching messages of support from contacts, both Jewish and not, who want to help. The support and solidary which I am experiencing, and which Israel is experiencing, fills me with a positive feeling that Israel has strong and true allies in the UK.”

Getting started

Always start with good insulation in your home. You want to be sure the heat source you choose is staying in your home as efficiently as possible, Josh recommends: “Your home should be fully insulated, certainly as insulated as the minimum standard, with decent glazing. This will make your heat source cost effective both to install and run. The next step in a zerocarbon home is solar panels. Installing solar panels and a battery will help you run your heating efficiently since you can store the energy for when you need it.

Electric boiler or heat pump?

The current divide of whether you should invest in an electric boiler or a heat pump is

everywhere. Though you might be umming and ahhing between the two, your property might have made the decision for you. Josh says: “Electric boilers best suit small to medium sized properties, post 2002 build, with the lower floor area fully insulated – a larger property will struggle. Because wet central heating systems heat up water, if you've got loads of radiators as you're going to need a big heating tank as well.” Though a heat tank is no trouble to buy it may be an unnecessary expense if a heat pump could work for you. Heat pumps are better for a larger space with some land outside to install it. Josh advises to have someone fit the heat pump who understands the locations of your radiators and the overall size of your house, he says “A common problem why people don’t like air-source heat pumps is that they haven’t got the right size. Getting a heat pump which is too big or too small will cause problems.”

Holocaust Centre North, in conjunction with Sinai Synagogue hosted Huddersfield’s first Shabbat service in over 60 years as part of a full weekend of activities.

Progressive Jewish Communities at Sinai Synagogue Leeds, The Bradford Synagogue, York Liberal Jewish Community, and Holocaust Centre North were honoured to present “Beit Yorkshire”, a weekend dedicated to recognising and celebrating the Jewish community in Yorkshire, which took place between 20th to 22nd October. With the rise of antisemitism in the UK since the events of October 7th, this planned weekend of activities was a hugely welcomed and timely celebration of Jewish communities in West Yorkshire, and of the importance of interfaith work at the heart of community building. Around 180 attendees of all ages from across the Jewish Communities in West Yorkshire and representatives from all faiths attended the weekend activities, which took place in three different venues. The weekend started with a Friday Night service and Shavura at Sinai Synagogue on October 20th in the presence of Rabbi Dr Elishava Salamo – the newly

appointed Spiritual Leader of York’s Jewish Community, Cantor Rachel Weston and representatives from Leeds Jewish Representative Council. Leading northern dignitaries including the Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin were also present. The highlight of the weekend was a Shabbat Service and Kiddush (blessings and reception) on Saturday morning, led by Chief Executive Officer of Liberal Judaism Rabbi Charley Baginsky. It was the first Shabbat service in Huddersfield for over 60 years. Rabbi Charley highlighted that there is rawness, distress, and sense of vulnerability in her community, while Rabbi Baginsky stressed that while this moment is about being able to hold the suffering and fear of those who look to you, it is important to name and recognise the suffering and tragedy of others, as doing so doesn’t diminish our own. This service was followed by a tour of Holocaust North Centre. Holocaust Centre North’s Director, Dr Alessandro Bucci, and Head of Learning, Hannah Randall, spoke about the centre’s work across collections and archive, learning and public engagement, art commissioning, and community support, before the weekend ended with a Saturday evening Klezmer concert – Klezmer by Freylach – on Saturday evening at Bradford Synagogue. Laurence Saffer, representing the organising entities, remarked: “This was a wonderful and unique opportunity for many of the regions communities to come together

and enabled those who have chosen to live outside the Jewish communities to reconnect and meet likeminded people. At a time when the Jewish Community is feeling particularly vulnerable, it was even more special and poignant to all come together for prayer, music, education, great food, and company.” Alessandro Bucci, Director of Holocaust Centre North, remarked: “For nearly five years, the Holocaust Centre North in Huddersfield has been a pillar of remembrance and education. Through our dedicated efforts in archives, education, artistic research, and survivor support, we highlight the severe consequences of all extremist regimes by preserving and sharing the stories of Holocaust survivors who identify as both Jewish and Northern. ‘Beit Yorkshire’ offered an unparalleled opportunity for the wider community to engage with us at a time when coming together to support one and other feels more vital than ever before. This collaboration

between the region’s Jewish Communities and Holocaust Centre North was a testament to our shared commitment to the Jewish community in Yorkshire and a truly wonderful event of which there will be more.” In Yorkshire, approximately 12,000 individuals proudly identify as Jewish. The recent census highlights the presence of Jewish people not only in areas with established synagogues but also in Kirklees, Calderdale, and Wakefield, where no synagogues currently exist. “Beit Yorkshire” took place to knit the community closer.

Beaming with The LJWB Pride Awards recognised the unsung heroes of the Leeds Jewish Community giving a lift to spirits.

The LJWB Pride Awards forged ahead after a six year break despite the backdrop in Israel. Hosted by Etz Chaim Synagogue on 16th November it celebrated unsung heroes who were nominated by community members and chosen as winners by an esteem panel. Jane Clynes, Chair of the event, said: “We were delighted to welcome back the awards after a break of six years raising money for the LJWB. The evening brought together our fantastic community, celebrating worthy winners who each go above and beyond the call of duty.” While the evening was one of celebration, Rabbi Alby Chait also gave a heartfelt tribute to Israel and led the audience in singing the national anthems.

Though Oliver George is beginning his new career as an Estate Agent, he’s no stranger to being self-employed: “The reason I got into estate agency was the because when I sold my property, it was frustrating to get the seller on the phone, to get an update. But more importantly, the fact they didn’t do viewings outside office hours. For potential buyers that work 9 to 5 Monday to Friday jobs. Within reason, I will be doing viewings seven days a week outside office hours. I started off in the flooring industry and I’ve done some work with new building. It’s not the same as estate agency but it’s a similar industry, that involves going into people’s houses and offering advice. I’d see so many different houses, and so many different people, so it’s similar in that regard. I’ve always been intrigued by estate agency and selling property. I applied for a couple of estate agency roles at traditional high street estate agents, and I was nearly offered a job, but later informed that because the agents were anticipating a depressed market – which we’re in now – they needed to restructure the Leeds area so they couldn’t bring on any more staff. When I saw

the Keller Williams, American-style selfemployed estate agency, were looking for people in Leeds, I went right for it.” Oliver’s partnership with Keller Williams allows him to pursue his career the way he wants to: “They have self-employed agents all over the world. With them it’s more about being yourself and looking out for the client than trying to sell, sell, sell. There are a lot of valuations which are done to quickly by traditional estate agents, either undervalued or overvalued. If they’re overvalued and then it gets reduced on Rightmove, people can see that, and it devalues the property. People start to wonder why it went down and what’s wrong with it.” The depressed housing market means that having a good estate agent looking after your property is more important than ever: “It means that people might not be buying as much, especially first-time buyers. Because if you’re a first-time buyer, you’ve got a deposit to save up. And if you’re living in a flat, obviously paying rent is way more than mortgages. As the interest rate keeps rising, it’s going to be a bit of a shock to them, they have to save up a 10% deposit and then

pay over 5% for the mortgage rate. Keller Williams agents all met with a Bank of England associate last week. She actually said that this might be the new normal, where it going to be above 5% for at least up to 2025. We can now tell people, if you’re waiting for a drop in the rates, that might not come soon.” As a house is most likely the most valuable thing you own, you shouldn’t settle for an ordinary estate agent when it comes to selling “The backing that I’ve got sets me apart. And I have different marketing skills. I’ve been an actor, so I’m quite artistic. Extra Time When it comes to school, it’s easy and perhaps natural to focus on what students are learning in their classes and how they will perform in exams. However, since the ages we spend in school are our most formative years, it’s also important to help students develop outside the classroom. One of the best ways schools can help facilitate this is through extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities are any activity which falls out of normal school teachings, and as Laurel Rees, Assistant Head (Co-curricular) at GSAL, tells us, these can help young people to develop valuable skills: “Extracurricular or what GSAL calls ‘co-curricular’ activities are absolutely invaluable when it comes to young people’s development. GSAL deliberately calls them ‘co’ rather than ‘extra’ curricular in order to highlight that they should sit alongside the other pillars of a strong, holistic education (the other two pillars being academic and pastoral). Nothing has highlighted the benefits of young people engaging with co-curricular activities more than the COVID pandemic where this part of school

Having the ability to freely choose and participate in clubs can help young people to feel a sense of identity and belonging. These activities can provide opportunities, within a structured environment, for young people to socialise with their peer group and also interact with students from older and younger years. This can help our young people to find appropriate role models to look up to within the school community and also, in turn, become leaders themselves as they move through the school.” One of the main positive effects of young people taking part in extracurricular activities is that it can often boost academic performance: “I think that there are a few factors that influence the correlation between co-curricular participation and academic performance. One of these will undoubtedly be to do with time management. Young people are forced to organise their time effectively in order to enable them to fit in their academic studies around their co-curricular commitment. I believe that this often makes them more productive. The engagement with an activity also provides

a valuable opportunity to use their body or mind in a different way, which can provide a ‘reset’, meaning that, when they return to their studies, they are in a clearer headspace and can concentrate effectively. I also believe that the diligence required to excel in co-curricular areas also sets young people up well from the efforts required to excel within the academic sphere. Regular revision and consolidation can certainly increase academic performance and I think this

is appreciated and practised more by students who participate in co-curricular activities.” The benefits aren’t just for the students, however, as Laurel believes that the staff also benefit from being able to organise and participate in these kinds of activities: “As well as the benefits to our young people, I believe that assisting with co-curricular activities is beneficial to staff too. The relationships that can be fostered as a result of interactions when helping with a co-curricular activity are very special and create a positive, welcoming environment.” Gsal.org

Fuelling Learning Through Food

Fran Graves, Catering General Manager at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE), discusses the ways in which schools are fuelling pupils’ education with healthy food.

The importance of food in education is clearer than ever with 46% of teachers in a recent survey conducted by Kellogg’s saying that children being hungry is a leading cause of difficulties to teach the curriculum in the classroom. Since a further 26% of teachers said they have seen children fall asleep due to lack of food or drink and numerous studies conclude eating a healthy, nutritious school meal lowers the likelihood of developmental impairments, it’s become one of the main reasons the government offers free meals to reception and key stage one. So, it’s no wonder that so many schools have begun investing heavily in their school’s meals and nutrition education. For example, the menu created by the multi award-winning catering team at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE), is healthy, mouth-watering, varied, and caters for all dietary requirements. Our team run themed weeks and international days to encourage trying new foods while having fun, with firm student favourites including the Chinese New Year Feast and the Great British Pie Week. Going a step further, we also have a Student Food Council that meets regularly with the catering team to provide their ideas and feedback and to ensure the food served remains popular with the whole QE community. At QE, we focus on creating nutritious and exciting meals and snacks to ensure our

students are getting the correct fuel they need to support them in their learning. Each half term we offer a new threeweek menu and a new light bite menu to keep things fresh. Our catering team are dedicated to contributing to the healthy eating and lifestyles of our students so that we can maximise their potential and improve their wellbeing. Schools are crucial to addressing the UK’s childhood obesity problem by teaching practical cooking skills and encouraging healthy eating. This is often done through food technology and topic lessons. At QE, 14 practical food technology classes happen per week encompassing every student in years 6 to 8, plus those that choose it as an option in year 9. In addition, cookery lessons are taught within the personal development course for Years 10 to 11 as part of an initiative to promote independence and to prepare the students for further education and beyond. Our team host a wide range of

educational extra-curricular activities for the whole school from their gardening Growing Club to our oversubscribed practical cooking and baking clubs. It’s also important for us to keep an open-door policy for year groups and subject teachers to be able to use the skills of our Food Development Chef, James Brown, as well as our facilities to plan and deliver lessons that support their topics such as Greek Food when learning about Ancient Greece, or healthy snack workshops for our sports students. Schools like QE are increasingly offering breakfast clubs as many parents struggle for childcare, but these clubs also offer a great start to the day for many students as the children eat a nutritional breakfast together with their friends. My colleague, Justine Smith, runs our Early Risers breakfast club which serves toast, cereal, fruit, and yoghurt from 7.30am to ensure that students who need it do not lose out on effective learning through hunger. With 69% of teachers concluding that a breakfast club has had a positive impact on their ability to teach their class in a study conducted by Kellogg’s, it is really important that schools across the country offer whatever they can to fuel the education of our next generation. First and foremost, a thank you to the Leeds Jewish Community for their support so far of the UJIA Emergency Community Appeal and all other fundraising initiatives that have taken place over the past month. I wanted to share the following article written by Louise Jacobs, UJIA Chair on her way back from Israel after a visit to show solidarity and to see for herself where UJIA emergency funds are being spent and where we can direct them as this crisis continues. “I wanted to go and hug friends and colleagues, hear first hand what they’d been through and lend support. As I met some of those hardest hit by the Hamas atrocity and its aftermath, nothing could have prepared me for what I saw and what I heard.

“I visited Kibbutz Shefayim where survivors from Kfar Aza have been evacuated. As you walk into the Kibbutz there is a board which lists all the shivas taking place that day in a special mourner’s complex. It’s heartbreaking to see many families mourning several family members at the same time. “The survivors we met, who told us of their experiences, were quick to point out that they were far from unique; a father and his daughter in law, his son, and her husband had died protecting them both and their one-month-old baby. A father who protected his family by holding onto a door handle – at one point the terrorist was looking through the keyhole at them and shot a bullet through narrowly missing his son.

“They were in there for nearly 24 hours: no toilet, food or water. We heard other stories too, of survival, of heroism, and of families where no one remains to tell their stories for themselves. “We met Moira who is Scottish, 70 years old, not Jewish, and a founder member of Netiv Asara. Moira is a peace activist and her husband regularly met Palestinian kids at the border and accompanied them to Israeli hospitals for cancer treatment. As she sat in her shelter room, she heard 23 members of her kibbutz being murdered in unspeakable ways that she could not bring herself to talk about.” Ujia.org

Golden Gala at St Aidan’s

Brodetsky Nursery Growth

The Associated Sixth Form at St. Aidan’s and St John Fisher was created in 1973 as a unique venture in ecumenical education. 50 years on, the Associated Sixth Form is going from strength to strength and a Golden Gala was planned that would mark this occasion bringing together exciting collaborations between the most experienced, gifted and talented performers and alumni students across both schools. At St. Aidan’s, Head of Music Mrs Elliott and her fantastic team; Mrs Leonard, Mrs Collett and Mr Elliott, along with St John Fisher’s Music staff, Mr Ratcliffe and Miss Longbottom, had been working around the clock rehearsing pieces that were both moving and upbeat with musical ensembles including Symphony Orchestra, Senior Choir, Chamber Choir and Swing Band. Miss Miller’s Year 12 Dancers performed stunning choreography to the fitting track ‘Golden’ by Harry Styles. Meanwhile, Mrs Levahn’s A Level drama students performed some challenging extracts from the Greek Tragedy, ‘Antigone’ with impressive ease and projection. Former student, Chemistry teacher and professional musical theatre actor, Richard Upton compered the Gala expertly and even stepped in to sing ‘Mack the Knife’ when Musical theatre star, Frankie Bounds couldn’t make it due to Storm Babette. Other alumni students involved included, West End ‘Les Miserables’ star, Jo Stephenson singing an extract from Wicked and Joseph and professional clarinettist Andy Mellor with his rousing jazz solo in the classic ‘Sing Sing Sing’.

Deborah Taylor Nursery opened in the 70s with a vision to have a place for Jewish children to feel connected and be a part of their community. Embedded in this vision was a place for Jewish values to be felt in the hearts of the children and Jewish experiences to be felt throughout the rooms and corridors. Generation after generation families have brought their children here in the footsteps of their parents. There is something special to be said about bringing your children and grandchildren to the same building where you were you started your Jewish education. Over the years Deborah Taylor, now called Brodetsky Nursery, has grown and grown, while keeping its foundations and visions in place. More and more families send their children here to start their life journeys. With a passion of outdoor learning, self-expression, independence and teachings of Jewish heritage, our nursery continues to grow. Building lifelong learners, our teachers believe that early learning is the most important part of education where children start their foundational learning. Its current focus is growing the nursery, and the nursery is excited to be able to split into two rooms according to the different ages. GSAL Waves Green Flag of Distinction Students at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) are celebrating after being accredited with a Green Flag distinction award. The Eco-Schools Green Flag recognises a school’s outstanding efforts to reduce its impact on the planet. Supported by Tim Street, teacher and Environmental Sustainability Leader, GSAL’s eco-enthusiasts have worked tirelessly after school to improve the sustainability of the 140-acre site at Alwoodley Gates. Tim Street praised the Eco Committee – staff and students – for their dedication to bettering GSAL’s green spaces through eco campaigns including: • A school allotment behind the Sports Dome • Hosting a school-wide Eco Week • A building management system to control timings and temperatures of heating and lighting around the school. • GSAL’s external lighting – including the astroturf and tennis courts – is already completely LED and managed by sensors for increased efficiency. GSAL is aiming to have 100% LED lighting by summer 2024. This season, an entire 14-hectare woodland will be planted behind the Manor House Lane sports pitches, helping to improve the air quality for Alwoodley residents while improving the school’s biodiversity and carbon offsetting. In addition, the

woodlands will provide more outdoor learning classrooms and habitats for local animals, leaving a legacy for many years. Izzie, a sixth form Eco Committee member, said: “I am so proud of the significant progress the staff and students have made on improving the site’s sustainability. I really enjoyed the Alwoodley 2030 Climate Action Hub Conference, which we hosted here at GSAL, where we shared ideas for becoming more eco-friendly.”

Israel Gaza Crisis Acknowledged at LJFS LJFS is a diverse community of students learning in an environment around the Jewish faith, some of those students being from the Muslim community. The situation in Gaza and recent atrocities from Hamas moved the school to bring in some specialist help to discuss the situation with students and parents to ensure relationships are maintained. Dan Cohen, Chair of Governors said: “It was essential that rather than ignore what was clearly becoming an underlying tension in school, we found a way to create a structure to both educate our students, but also to give an opportunity for them to give their view on what is happening, in some cases to their families, in Israel. This wasn’t about having a one off easy fix, but to try to give all our students some of the tools to have difficult conversations with friends with perhaps different views, but in a respectful way and in a way that allows us to have different views but still be part of one family. It is a long term project, and as well as thanking all our students and staff for their work on this, along with Solutions not Sides who came to start us on this project, I must thank both The Zone for all their work and Simon Myerson from LJRC for his ongoing support.”

Conversely, in the generation of Ahab, the people worshipped pagan deities, yet were successful in battle, because there were no defamers. The attack happened on the 8th day of Sukkot, otherwise known as Shemini Atzeret/ Simchat Torah. This day is in fact a totally separate festival from Sukkot. The commentators pinpoint G-d’s rationale for this day of celebration – a child who spends a week bonding and coming closer to a parent, to just pick up and leave after that, is heart-wrenching for the parent. Our Father in heaven feels the same way, so He therefore asks us to spend one more day celebrating our relationship with Him. The literal translation of this Hebrew concept is: “It is difficult for Me (i.e. G-d) your separating.” However, for the first time in 35 years, I heard an idea from Rabbi Dovid of Lelov

When we, as a people, can continue building our love and genuine respect for others, forgetting our differences and appreciating every life around us for its marvellous Jewish beauty, we will be able to count the moments until we can all approach the One Above. With tears of happiness streaming down our cheeks we will slowly make the blessing of Shehecheyanu as we light up the lights and advance into the next phase of history, an era for which we have been waiting millennia. The greatest Chanukah miracle yet.

Unity on Track

So, you know that hunch parents have regarding the gender of their future child... we were beyond that feeling! We simply knew that it was a boy although we chose not to find out at the ultrasound. We had discussed where the brit would be held, which of our friends would bring the baby into the ceremony, and who would hold our son during it. We had decided on a gorgeous boy’s name, and had made the newborn boy’s clothing that we had in storage, more accessible. We also located the girls’ clothes, though more out of being politically correct than anything else. This year why not try making your own Chanukah candles?

What you’ll need Candle wax (soy, paraffin, beeswax, or reuse old leftover candles) A double boiler (one large pot for water and one smaller heat-safe container to melt wax in) A sugar or meat thermometer Candle wicks Candle stick mould (good ones for Chanukah can be found on Etsy or Amazon)

Step three: Ensure the wax is completely melted with a sugar or meat thermometer. Paraffin wax should read between 50 to 60˚C, soy wax should read between 77 to 82˚C, beeswax should read around 19˚C, and old candles can be melted at around 85˚C with their wicks (and anything other than its wax) removed.

Method Coloured candles

Step one: Before you begin cutting wax you may want to cover your work surface with newspaper, parchment paper or foil as wax can be tricky to remove, especially from wooden tabletops. Chop your desired wax into small chunks to aide the melting process.

Step four: Thread your candlestick mould with your wick(s) by following the instructions of your chosen mould. Then pour in your wax, bearing in mind that beeswax may shrink after cooling.

To create coloured candles, you can add crayons when chopping your wax! Experiment with different finishes to your candles like creating an ombre effect by layering different colours into your moulds or a rainbow candle.

Painted candles

Step five: Leave your candles to cool and set overnight or, for best results, 24 hours. Once set trim the wick to about a quarter of an inch long and enjoy!

Go one step further If making your own candles still isn’t enough for you, here are some extra ways to jazz up your candle making.

Scented candles Step two: Make a double boiler over the stove, in a shallow pot of water place a heatsafe container in the water (the waterline should only reach the bottom quarter of your container) and place your chopped wax inside. Bring the water to a simmer and avoid a rolling boil.

To scent your candles, you’ll want to add in essential oils after you’ve completely melted your wax. Play around with combinations of scents like vanilla and orange for a festive fragrance or lavender and eucalyptus for a spa-like smell. Twelve drops of essential oil per 16-ounce batch of wax will give you what you need.

Best seen on white paraffin candles, which if you wanted to skip all the above, you could buy from the shops! To prepare your candle for painting, clean it with a lint free cloth and some rubbing alcohol so the paint can adhere to the surface of the candle. Seacroft Grange’s original Grade II listed building is now home to our spa suite, therapy rooms, hairdressing salon, gym, cinema room and even a bistro which is sometimes used to hold events for the residents. Glass walkways lead out of the original building to the extensions, which house the dining area, communal living area, and individual care suites. There are also a range of activities on offer for the residents, and it’s not just your usual bingo on offer: “We do a lot,” Eve explained. “We’re blessed to have an absolutely fantastic wellbeing team, with a passionate manager who loves to put activities on. We do a wide range of activities, we even had one once with involved pygmy goats running around the building with nappies on, which was great fun! The wellbeing team are so passionate, and they cram so much into the planner. You’d think we’d got a team of 20 with the amount they do and what they achieve.” The team also works closely with the residents to see what kind of things they’d like to do: “We have regular resident’s meetings, so we can ask their opinion on what they want to do in the home. Based on that, we’ve introduced new games like shuffleboard, which was a suggestion from one of the residents. We’re not adverse to trying anything, if somebody wants something specific. “We had a gentleman who was sadly on end-of-life care. He wanted more than anything to go clay pigeon shooting. Obviously, we couldn’t send him out to do that, but I did a ring around, and managed to find some kind chaps to come along. Sinai Members Attend Residential More than 20 representatives from Sinai Synagogue attended the threeday Northern Chagigah residential at the Hawkhills Conference Centre at Easingwold, north of York. They were joined by another 110 adults, teenagers and families from Progressive Judaism’s northern communities for a weekend filled with ‘relaxation, learning, prayer, and fun’. Sarita Robinson, Director of Community Partnership explained: “Because of events in Israel, everyone said how comforting it was to be together with friends and relax in a safe place at this very difficult time for all of us.” Songs of hope were led by Cantor Zoe Jacobs and there was an online update from the ‘Bring them Home’ campaign offering advice as to how communities can help keep the names of the hostages in the British media. Local expert, Brian Teeman led a session on the implications of artificial intelligence for Judaism.

Community Welcome Israeli Families Warm welcome plans are currently ongoing in the community in anticipation for more Israeli families moving to Leeds. The aim is to create a weekly schedule to make new families feel welcomed and integrated into the Leeds community while giving them access to activities for children and young people, sports, support services, and mental health support for trauma as well as links to education and housing services. Families arriving from Israel, or anyone who knows a family who has just moved, are being urged to be directed to The Zone who can help them with finding the right organisations to help them. Harrogate Leaders Advocate Calm and Respect

Winter Ball Raises £80,000 St Gemma’s Winter Ball was a smash hit, gaining £80,000 to support expert patient care for locals suffering from terminal illnesses. The evening was a great success where, in the birdcage raffle, one lucky guest won a diamond necklace donated by Berry’s Jewellers. By the end of the night everyone was up and dancing to live music by Northern Vibes. Stewart Graham, Head of Fundraising, said: “We’re so grateful to everyone who attended this year’s Winter Ball and helped raise over £80,000 for our work. A plea for tolerance, calm and respect has been issued by Harrogate’s religious leaders as the conflict in the Middle East. Local MP Andrew Jones met with the Imam of the Harrogate Mosque, the President of the Harrogate synagogue and the vicar of St Peter’s Church, Reverend Alan Garrow, on 13th November to discuss the ongoing situation and the positions of Muslims and Jews in Harrogate and Knaresborough and nationwide. Mr Jones commented: “I am grateful to the Imam, the President of the synagogue and Rev Garrow for coming together to emphasise a message of tolerance, calm and respect. Islamophobic and antisemitic acts are unacceptable, and I am pleased that we seem not to be experiencing an increase in this kind of hatred locally. This meeting is important because it demonstrates that whatever our beliefs, we are compassionate beings sharing humanitarian values and respecting one another.” Bernard Cohen, President of the Harrogate synagogue continued: “The Iman and I meeting today vividly demonstrates that although being of different faiths there is no difference in our humanity and our values of respect, tolerance, community, and a desire for peace. LIGHT UP Rabbi Eli Pink of Chabad Lubavitch offers some thought on Chanukah in light of the turbulence in Israel.

It used to be the vogue to support Israel. Even the notoriously anti-Israel UN voted for the establishment of the state, and volunteering on a kibbutz was popular among Jewish and non-Jewish youth. Analysts say that this changed after the 1967 Six Day War, when Israel was no longer looked at as the underdog. In truth though, as Chanukah reminds us, Jewish people have always been a nation surrounded by those who wish our destruction. We are not fooled by those who claim that “from the river to the sea” is a peaceful expression for rights for all, because we know how this story ends. As the ancient prophets said, we are the sheep, surrounded by seventy wolves. So what for us to do? The Maccabean victory that we celebrate is primarily not the battle against the Greek Seleucids, but the

Chanukah has always been a highlight of the Jewish calendar. Its imagery and messaging are clear and easily explainable to our children and to our non-Jewish friends. The Chanukah observances of lighting a candle each night and bringing a little extra light into the world are themes that everyone came be comfortable with. This year, with the tragedy and pain in Israel and the continued prayers for the release of all the hostages and for the Jewish nation to be able to live in peace (hopefully it has happened by the time this article is published!), Chanukah has added poignancy.
