Stream

In a dramatic twist, this month’s selection of new arrivals to TV streaming includes quite a few things with short names

The Hobbit

The book that took place over three movies because Peter Jackson really liked New Zealand has come to Showmax. Catch all three – An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and The Battle of Five Armies – on stream and follow along with Bilbo Baggins as he goes on an adventure to there and back again.

Film / Showmax

Interstellar

So you liked Apollo 13 but it wasn’t quite dark enough for you. Perhaps Interstellar by Christopher Nolan is more your style. Planet Earth, bluntly, is screwed, and it’s up to Matthew McConaughey and an intrepid crew to head out on a long, unlikely-to-succeed journey to save humanity. This film features both wormholes and emotions.

Film / Netflix, Showmax

The Harder They Fall

A hardcore Western with a predominately black cast isn’t something you encounter every day but when the lead is played by Idris Elba, Jonathan Majors, Zazie Beetz and Regina King, you’ll wonder why this doesn’t happen more often. Loosely based on actual people, this oat-opera revolves around a tale of revenge.

Film / Netflix

Succession

Follow yet another season of the Roy family as they vie for control over the family empire. Patriarch Logan Roy is in the firing line as his son Kendall attempts to wrest control of everything from his understandably angered hands. If nothing else, the combative family will make you feel better about your own dysfunctions.

S3 / Showmax

Borat’s American Lockdown

What happens when you stick Borat Sagdivev, played by Sacha Baron Cohen, in an isolated location with two conspiracy theorists? That the question answered by Borat’s American Lockdown, which sees Borat interacting with two chaps, named Jim and Jerry, during the worst of the COVID lockdown.

S1/AmazonPrimeVideo

Inside Job

So you’re interested in Rick and Morty but don’t feel you have the requisite intellectual capacity to post about it on Twitter? Inside Job is a far more inclusive look at that Deep State Donald Trump was always on about. If you’ve ever wondered how hard it is to keep all those conspiracies going, this show will lay all your theories to rest.

S1/Netflix

DON’T MISS THIS

Arcane S1 / Netflix

Sporting simply gorgeous visuals and an equally impressive storyline, Arcane breaks the mould of video game-based productions by being a stunning standalone presentation. Based in the League of Legends universe, the series follows a pair of sisters through a setting that wouldn’t disgrace game developer Arkane’s Dishonored games. Viewers don’t need to have the slightest idea what Riot Games’ League is in order to be gobsmacked by how well-realised this fantasy world is.
