Nikola x What is Yoga Therapy? The International Association of Yoga Therapists defines yoga therapy as: “The process of empowering individuals to progress towards improved health and wellbeing through the application of the teachings and practices of yoga.”

I started practicing yoga 25 years ago to help me deal with a crippling anxiety and panic disorder.

Yoga made such a big difference to my life that I was inspired to study, practice and ultimately help others to be empowered through the techniques and principles of yoga therapy.

Nearly a quarter of a century later, I am honoured to offer Australia’s first AAYT accredited 650hr Yoga Therapy teacher training – the Adore Yoga Graduate Certificate of Yoga Therapy. This is Australia’s first ever fully accredited

texts tell us that working with students with compromised health requires specialist skills.

Not all yoga is the same and studying yoga therapy is a pathway to learning both traditional and evidence -based techniques to work effectively with health issues.

“Yoga is not a medical system. Yoga is a set of principles that show us we are interconnected, multidimensional beings composed of body, breath, and mind. These teachings suggest strategies for identifying and reducing obstructions that can occur in any of these dimensions.

When obstructions (klesha) are reduced, it is the human system itself that reestablishes a healthy balance. CERTIFICATE OF YOGA THERAPY WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR? This advanced training is for yoga teachers with a minimum 350hrs Stage 1 certification. RYT200 certified and newly qualified teachers should apply for the 150hr Introduction to Yoga Therapy, a specialist bridging course that will prepare you for full yoga therapy training.

WHERE AND WHEN DOES THE COURSE RUN?

The course runs at Adore Yoga’s French’s Forest Campus and begins on 9 March 2017. The full 650hr Graduate Certificate in Yoga Therapy runs for a minimum of 2 years. However, the course runs on a flexible modular format for self-paced study and you can take up to 5 years to complete.

(THURS 9 MARCH - FRI 10 MARCH 2016) This module lays the foundations for studying therapeutic yoga with an enquiry into the nature of yoga therapy, the attributes of a therapeutic yoga teacher and the traditional ayurvedic framework for healing through yoga. We’ll also discover the philosophical foundations of yoga therapy as we explore the therapeutic application of classical yoga texts.

HOLISTIC COUNSELING IN YOGA THERAPY

YOGA PSYCHOLOGY FOUNDATIONS

(SAT 11 - SUN 12 APRIL 2017) This fascinating module explores the yogic view of the mind, comparing Eastern and Western approaches to psychology. Taking the classical yoga texts as our guide, we will discover the fundamental principles of yoga psychology and learn how to apply them to meet the therapeutic needs of individual students.

We will also study the integration of mindfulness and the principles of positive psychology into yoga therapy.

MODULE

(THU. 23 - FRI 24 MAR. 2017) Counseling and communication skills are a vital part of yoga therapy. In this module you will learn how to build effective therapeutic relationships with your students and develop therapeutic communication skills, including empathic listening, the use of silence, unconditional positive regard and conflict management. We will also explore issues of boundaries, ethics, transference, counter-transference and critical thinking to help you to develop confidence and efficacy as a professional yoga therapist.

(SAT 25 - SUN 26 MAR. 2017)

This module will give you a solid foundation in the causes, symptoms and treatment of common mood disorders, including anxiety, panic disorders and depression. Learn how to see mood disorders through the yoga lens and apply practical techniques to help students through the recovery process.

(THURS 27 - FRI 28 APRIL 2017) This module will broaden your understanding of the human body as we take a close look at the functional anatomy, dysfunction and treatment of the upper body, including the shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, neck and upper back. By the end of this module you will have a strong understanding of how to assess and treat students with a range of upper body pain and injury.

YOGA THERAPY FOR CANCER AND PAIN MANAGEMENT

(SAT 29 – SUN 30 APRIL 2017) Deepen your understanding of functional and dysfunctional anatomy as we examine the musculoskeletal system of the lower body through the yoga lens. You’ll enjoy hands -on exercises that will sharpen your observation skills as you explore functional anatomy, dysfunction and the treatment of the spine and hips, including pain and injury associated with the sacro-illiac joint, knees, ankles and feet.

MODULE

(THURS 11 - FRIDAY 12 MAY 2017) There is now a large body of evidence to show the benefits of yoga for cancer patients. This module will show you how to support students with cancer from diagnosis and throughout their treatment process. You will discover the ayurvedic and yogic perspectives on cancer and learn techniques to assist your students at every stage of their journey with cancer.

ORTHOPEDIC YOGA THERAPY: THE LOWER BODY

YOGA FOR ELDERLY STUDENTS AND END OF LIFE CARE (SAT 13 - SUN 14 MAY 2017)

Yoga therapy can help students at every life stage.

This module will show you how to adapt your teaching to meet the needs of elderly students and includes physical and spiritual techniques to help students with osteoporosis, limited mobility, dementia and end of life care, including how to support students in a palliative care setting.

STAGE 1 ASSESSMENT AND PRACTICUM Each of the 4 modules in Stage 1 has a compulsory homework and assessment component, totaling 50hrs. You will also be required to undertake 50hrs of practicum, practicing and integrating the skills you have learned during the face to face teaching sessions. Stage 1 of the Graduate Certificate of Yoga Therapy is Yoga Alliance accredited and upon successful completion you may apply for RYT500 certification.

MODULE 1

FUNCTIONAL ASSESSMENT AND THERAPEUTIC ADJUSTING (THURS 8 – FRI 9 JUNE 2017)

Strong observation skills are essential for yoga therapists and this module introduces you to the art of observing dysfunctional patterns of movement and postural alignment. You will learn how to conduct a thorough structural and mobility assessment and how to use your observations to help students repattern dysfunctional physical habits. You’ll also get plenty of hands on experience in providing therapeutic adjustments.

WORKING ONE-ON-ONE: THERAPEUTIC SEQUENCING AND ADJUSTING (SAT 10 - SUN 11 JUNE 2017)

Starting from the ground up, this module will show you where to start when working therapeutically on a 121 basis. You will learn how to set a therapeutic goal, determine which techniques to teach and how to create a sequence to meet the needs of your student. You will also learn the art of subtle touch and adjusting, including the use of props to enhance the effectiveness of the practice.

MODULE 2

YOGA THERAPY FOR NEURODEGENERATIVE AND AUTO-IMMUNE DISEASE: MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS, PARKINSON’S, HUNTINGTON’S, RHUEMATOID ARTHRITIS, LUPUS, CFS, FIBROMYALGIA, CHROHNS, COELIAC DISEASES (THURS 27 - FRI 28 JULY 2017)

Recent advances in neuroscience are supporting the principles of yoga therapy as an effective adjunct treatment for diseases such as MS and Parkinson’s. This module draws on cutting edge research to offer techniques for working with students at all stages of neurodegenerative diseases. You will learn how to help students maintain mobility, reduce pain, improve neural functioning and create a safe practice environment.

THERAPEUTIC RESTORATIVE YOGA (SATURDAY 29 - SUN 30 JULY 2017)

Restorative yoga is a powerful practice that has profound healing potential. This module will give you a thorough grounding in the philosophy and techniques of restorative yoga and give you the practical propping skills to assist a wide diversity of body-types into appropriate restorative practices.

MODULE 3

PERSONALITY, BEHAVIOUR AND DIVERSITY IN YOGA THERAPY (THURS 14 - FRI 15 SEPTEMBER 2017)

This module explores the practical, theoretical and ethical considerations for yoga therapists working with a diverse range of clients. You will learn key skills for working with students with different abilities and from a variety of cultural backgrounds and diverse value systems. You’ll gain insights into how and why students approach their wellbeing in different ways and how you can adapt your approach to have a greater impact on their health outcomes. Encompassing theories of personality and social psychology, this module will help you take an holistic approach to teaching, enabling you to reach a diverse range of students in meaningful ways.

YOGA FOR ASTHMA AND RESPIRATORY CONDITIONS (SATURDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 2017)

A carefully crafted yoga practice can help people with asthma reduce the number of attacks and improve scores for peak flow rate. In this module you will learn the causes, symptoms and treatment for asthma and discover specialised techniques to help people with asthma take control of their health and make a real difference to their symptoms.

YOGA FOR CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH (SUNDAY 17 SEPTEMBER 2017)

This module examines the large body of evidence demonstrating the benefits of yoga for students with cardiovascular disease. You will explore the anatomy of the cardiovascular system and gain a thorough grounding in the causes, symptoms and treatment of cardiovascular disease. You’ll learn important practical and effective techniques for working with students with range of cardiovascular conditions.

MODULE 4

THE PROFESSIONAL YOGA THERAPIST (THURS 19 - FRI 20 OCTOBER 2017)

This module will equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to run a successful yoga therapy practice. From ethical business and marketing tools to legal and OHS obligations, you’ll learn how to set up and maintain a private yoga therapy practice. Yoga therapists often work in partnership with clinicians and allied health care professionals and this module will help you navigate the Australian healthcare system, become proficient at reading medical information and make and receive referrals within the healthcare system.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND SELF CARE (SATURDAY 21 OCTOBER 2017) Earning accreditation as a yoga therapist is just the start of your journey! Yoga therapists are required to maintain their professional development and this module will explore the role of mentoring

and ongoing professional development after you complete your qualification. You will also learn vital research skills that will help you develop

rigor and discrimination in your own learning

process and improve the level of care that you offer to your students. Self care is a vital component

of every yoga therapist’s practice and we will be

considering the benefits and logistics of creating a supportive community and daily self-care rituals.

INTEGRATION AND COMPLEX PRESENTATIONS IN YOGA THERAPY (SUNDAY 22 OCTOBER 2017)

Real human beings often present with a diverse collection of symptoms and co-morbidity. This

module is an enquiry into working with students with complex presentations, exploring ways to

approach cases that can challenge us personally and professionally. Drawing on the principles of

yoga therapy, ethics and best professional practice, we will learn how to manage, and when to refer,

students with diverse needs and symptoms. With live case studies to work on, this module is an

opportunity to observe senior yoga therapists

at work and participate in question and answer sessions as you develop your understanding of working with ‘real people’.

THE BREATH & MEDITATION IN YOGA THERAPY

East-West Nutrition and the Gut-Brain Relationship

In this module you will deepen your understanding of the influence of the breath on the body-mind and explore the use of pranayama and meditation as tools for healing. You will learn how to assess your student’s breathing patterns and use the ayurvedic framework to determine most appropriate pranayama and meditation techniques for each individual.

Nutrition and digestion are central to ayurvedic medicine and western nutrition is catching up quickly.

This module compares eastern and western views on the relationship between food and mind-body functioning.

As well as exploring the ayurvedic model of nutrition and digestion, you’ll discover cutting edge research on the human micro-biome and how to influence physical and mental health through improving gut function.

CHANTING, CHAKRAS AND ENERGETIC HEALING (SAT 24 - SUN 25 MARCH 2017)

Sound is a powerful tool for healing. This module demonstrates the role of chanting, mantra and sound in yoga therapy and offers practical techniques to use in a wide variety of applications. This module also explores the chakra system and the energetic role of mudras and nyasa in physical, mental and emotional healing.

AYURVEDIC DIAGNOSIS AND CLEANSING (SAT 26 OCT - SUN 27 MAY 2018)

Cleansing and detoxification are the key to good health, according to ayurveda. In this module we will explore ayurvedic cleansing techniques and enjoy the opportunity to experience several detoxing practices.

YOGA THERAPY FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH

BODY-MIND INTEGRATION

Yoga therapy offers a wide range of effective tools for helping women manage their health and wellbeing throughout the life stages.

This module offers a yoga perspective on disorders of the female reproductive system including endometriosis, fibroids and menstrual irregularities. You will also develop your understanding of the pelvic floor and lean techniques to support women through menopause.

This module explores current developments in neuroscience and examines how our understanding of the relationship between mind and body is changing. We will look at the implications of neuroplasticity for body-mind modalities and consider how we can integrate recent scientific findings into our practice as yoga therapists.

TRAUMA AWARE YOGA & YOGA FOR EATING DISORDERS (SAT 28 - SUN 29 JULY 2018)

Drawing on evidence-based international programs, the first part of this module provides an introduction to working with trauma-affected students. You will discover the causes, symptoms and treatment of trauma and PTSD, along with the principles of trauma aware yoga. You will learn how to plan, teach and language your classes to meet the needs of people affected by trauma and PTSD. The second part of the module will introduce you to the causes, symptoms and treatment of eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia and binge eating. You will learn how and why yoga helps people with eating disorders to heal and how to adapt your classes to meet their unique needs.

INTEGRATION AND ASSESSMENT

(FRI 14 SEPT - SAT 15 SEPTEMBER 2018) In this final module of the Graduate Certificate in Yoga Therapy you will be integrating elements of earlier modules as you work with live case studies under assessment conditions. You will also be presenting the results of research that you have undertaken during your studies and learning from your peers.

STAGE 3 ASSESSMENT AND PRACTICUM Each of the 4 modules in Stage 3 has a compulsory homework, research and assessment component, totaling 50hrs. You will also be required to undertake 50hrs of clinic (seva), practicing and integrating the skills you have learned during the face to face teaching sessions. Successful completion of all three Stages of this program will lead to the award of Graduate Certificate of Yoga Therapy, making you eligible to register as a yoga therapist with the Australian Association of Yoga Therapists and the International Association of Yoga Therapists.

A certified Level 3 teacher (Yoga Australia) and ERYT 500+ (Yoga Alliance), she has studied with leading international teachers including TKV Desikachar, Judith Lasater, Saraswathi Vasudevan, Michael de Manincor, Mark Breadner and Ganesh Mohan.

osie is a one of Sydney’s most senior yoga teachers and a seasoned yoga teacher trainer. She is a fun loving person and a committed family gal who has been teaching yoga for over 15 years and has been in the classroom for 40 years as a teacher and lecturer. Rosie is passionate about yoga and its tools. She specialises in working in small classes and individual sessions to support people towards wellbeing and affect positive change in their lives. Rosie works with the whole person - mind, body, breath and spirit - using movement, sound, breath and talking.

harmacist, naturopath and nutritionist, Rosemary has been passionate about health since graduating from Sydney University with a Bachelor of Pharmacy 25 years ago. Ten years ago she completed a Diploma of Naturopathy from Nature Care College and since then she has been studying the mind and the decisions we make in relationship to health.

Sevadevi Glover

evadevi is a Senior Yoga and Meditation Teacher with 18 years full time teaching experience. She founded Annandale Yoga in 2012 where she currently teaches and has taught Yoga and Meditation workshops in both Europe and India. In 2005 she presented “Yoga for Diabetes” at the “Yoga, the Science of Infinite Possibilities” Conference and Mantra in Action workshop at the 2007 AYA Conference. In 2009 she was invited to speak at the World Parliament of Religions in Melbourne.

Sevadevi is a founding member of Ayurveda Yoga Australia an organization promoting ayurveda and yoga that conducted 2 major International conferences in 2006 and 2009 in Sydney. She completed extensive Teacher Training in 1996 with Yoga in Daily Life and taught philosophy modules as part of their teacher training program. Further studies include Exercise Science with Satyananada Yoga. Sevadevi is a gentle, intuitive teacher with a passion for the meditative practices of Yin Yoga and Kirtan.

Founded in 2002, Adore Yoga is dedicated to teaching small-group, therapeutic classes in which teachers tailor each practice to meet the needs of every single student.

Do I have to do all of the modules?

No. You can do any of the modules in any order. You can study one module at a time (50hrs), one Stage at a time (220hrs) or enroll for the whole course (650hrs). Please note that accreditation only applies when all modules have been completed.

If I miss the first module, can I join in with the second module?

Yes, the modules are not sequential and you can join the course at any time.

Can I do some modules this year, then do the rest in subsequent years?

Yes. The Graduate Certificate in Yoga Therapy certification takes a minimum of 2 years to complete and you can take up to 5 years to finish the course.

Do I get accreditation for completing just one of the modules?

When you complete each module or Stage, you will receive a certificate that can be used to gain CPD

points with Yoga Alliance and Yoga Australia. However, full accreditation requires that you satisfactorily complete all modules.

Do I get accreditation for completing just one of the Stages?

When you complete all 4 modules in each Stage, you may be eligible to apply for accreditation with the relevant body. For example, if you joined the course with 350hrs prior training, you may apply to Yoga Alliance for RYT500 accreditation when you complete all modules in Stage 1.

Where is the course being taught?

This course takes place at the studio of Adore founder Nikola Ellis.

Located in Davidson (near Frenchs Forest), it is a peaceful, professional purpose-designed studio that offers a light and spacious environment for study and practice. While morning and afternoon tea is provided, we recommend you bring your own lunch. Alternatively there are cafes within 10 mins drive.

What are the course entry requirements?

This is an advanced training for yoga teachers who currently hold a minimum 350hrs training. RYT200 or newly graduated teachers should apply to join the Adore Yoga 150hr Introduction to Yoga Therapy bridging course to prepare for full yoga therapy training.

Are there any ‘hidden costs’?

You will need to buy the compulsory texts for each module (approximately 4 books for each module) and it would help you enormously with your studies if you get hold of the recommended texts too. In addition to the course fees, each module requires that you undertake two private 121 mentoring session with a senior faculty member for each module and you will pay your teacher $100 at the time of the session (not included in course fee). Otherwise, all of the teaching, notes, materials and refreshments are included in the price of the course.

why modifying a pose

ISN’T YOGA THERAPY Adapted from an article by Nikola Ellis that first appeared in Australian Yoga Journal

A

student arrives at one of your regular classes and tells you she’s got a disc lesion. Just behind her is another student who mentions he’s got a bit of tendonitis. And there, right at the back, is a new student who you can see is struggling to keep up before the end of the warm up. How do you manage all these diverse bodies in one class?

And those are the injuries and restrictions that you know about. With 1 in 3 Australians receiving a cancer diagnosis during their lifetime, 2 million Australians experiencing anxiety and up to 80% experiencing back pain, you can be sure that for every student who tells you about their condition, there are several others suffering in silence.

Yoga is, and always has been, therapeutic. But the rise of large group classes and the popularity of flowing vinyasa styles has created a ‘one -size-fits-all’ approach to yoga

that just doesn’t work for much of the population. How do you stop and modify a practice for students with injuries when you are demonstrating a non-stop flow sequence?

It hasn’t always been like this. Yoga was traditionally taught in small groups or one-to-one, allowing the teacher to tailor each practice to the needs of the individual. In many classes today, ‘modification’ means adapting a general practice so that the injured student can stagger through without doing themselves a greater injury. That is not the goal of yoga therapy.

Rather than offering a prop or modification to help a student manage a pose that would otherwise be too challenging for them, yoga therapy goes back to the traditional roots of yoga and looks at each unique individual and asks ‘What does this person need?’ And the answer is sometimes surprising.

TAKE TWO DOWN DOGS

I’m often asked by yoga teachers “what’s a good pose for back ache” or “what practice should I give a student with depression?” These questions are a great start, because they acknowledge that students with special needs require more than a general asana class. But they also highlight a way of thinking that is at odds with the principles of yoga therapy. Yoga therapy is not prescriptive – there is no single pose or sequence that fixes back pain, no pranayama that is good for

everybody with depression. Each individual student needs to be treated differently and simply prescribing ‘two down dogs’ in the same way a doctor might prescribe pain killers simply doesn’t work.

One of my teachers illustrated this by describing a couple who arrived at his yoga studio with the same health conditions – obesity and depression. A standard Western way of treating these students would be to ask “what does the literature say is the best way to treat depression and obesity”? But the yoga therapist takes a more nuanced approach.

After spending some time with the students, the teacher determined that the husband was overweight as a result of drinking too much alcohol. His alcohol consumption had sky-rocketed since losing his job several months ago, an event that had propelled him into depression. The

wife was depressed as a result of her weight gain – she felt exhausted, unhealthy and judged by her friends, making her reclusive and unhappy.

Even though they have the same symptoms, the causes are very different and so the yoga therapist offers different practices – mantra for the husband (often used to treat depression) and dynamic asana for the wife to help her regulate her eating habits and improve her physical health. I’ve simplified the story, but it is a good example of how yoga therapy deals with the whole person.

Secondly, you can offer them a home practice that specifically targets their individual needs. Thirdly, you can provide tailored guidelines to help your students get the most out of group class – for example, teaching them why and how to modify certain types of poses in

order to practice safely.

With its emphasis on personalizing the practice to meet the needs of each student, yoga therapy is an extremely powerful tool for healing. It is a rich framework for understanding students, piecing together patterns of pathology and identifying the most appropriate practices to meet their individual needs.

But back to the question of how do you manage a number of diverse bodies in a group asana class? While there are many techniques to help you work with groups (the most important one being to educate and empower your students to practice in the way that’s best for them), students with specific conditions would benefit from private yoga therapy.
