A Toast to 10: Memories from the Past Decade

Super thankful for Blk71 and the NUS Enterprise team. We moved offices three times and eventually took over the entire incubator + all meeting rooms! More than just being a kind landlord, the support and community is sorely missed!

-Henry Chan, Co-Founder, ShopBack

ShopBack's rapid growth quickly filled the incubator, including the event space.

When Lomotif was a team of three, I remember working out of the same room as Carousell and 99.co. Everyone was hustling day and night. There were numerous occasions where I would get to work at around 5am and always find someone from Carousell asleep on the couch with their laptop in hand. The collective passion and determination of the teams working out of Blk 71 was a significant contributing factor to where Lomotif is today.”

Blk71 is where Quest Ventures got its start. Visiting NUS’ Plug-In@ Blk71 on a trip to Singapore from China, I was graciously welcomed by Brian Koh and his team who very quickly settled me in. I picked a table right in front of locker number 55, which stood for 55tuan, the company I was running in China. From then on, whenever I returned to Singapore, I made it a point to visit Plug-In. It was the place where I met Burpple, Carousell, ShopBack, 99.co, Oddle, and many more which I in turn had an opportunity to invest in. NUS’ Plug-In@Blk71 ignited the development of JTC LaunchPad @one-north and firmly anchored Singapore as an important node in the global startup ecosystem. Congratulations on your 10th anniversary!”

The first time I met my husband, Darius [Cheung, co-founder of 99.co], was at Blk 71. We met at the former JFDI office, where we both were attending an event. Two years later he proposed to me at the same office.”

This is me painting the walls [at Blk 71] with the QuickDesk logo. This photo is significant because it indicates openness and community. The greatest impact is being able to co-share an office with other amazing start-ups whom we can work with till late night (the last bus/last train). We will never be alone in that unit. “

BLOCK71 connected us with students, founders and tech enthusiasts which made our team.”

Carousell is a homegrown startup and we are grateful to have had a good footing here in our early years. Getting your business up-and-running quickly is pretty much a make or break factor in an early-stage company. Moving into Blk 71 and having a dedicated working space helped us to focus on the tasks at hand. The place was a focal point, and it became a habit to go there just for work, compared to our previous arrangements.”

-Marcus Tan, Co-Founder, Carousell

Carousell was known for being the first ones at the office in the morning and the last ones to leave in the evening.

The community at BLOCK71 has been a terrific value-add in the journey of our company. A strong peer group of fellow-founders has helped the company develop its market traction and even bridge the knowledge-gap in various areas.
