Forward What comes to mind when we talk about the landscapes of Singapore? Is it the lush tropical green, the ‘Garden City,’ and/or the more recent moniker of ‘City in Nature’? Against each of these imaginations, the reality is messier and much less pristine. It is complex, dynamic, and evolving. The studio projects, events, programmes, and faculty work selected for this volume represent a microcosm of this collective complexity. They represent an effort to engage with the multiplicities of what constitutes the lived landscapes of Singapore and beyond.

This past year, the BLA/MLA programmes welcomed emerging and renowned practitioners and scholars who examined the processes of environmental change, urbanization, and development in Southeast Asia. Our studio projects engaged senses, interpretations, and explorations of topics ranging from industrial ecologies to peri-urban conditions. Students utilize their perceptions, as well as the latest digital tools, to examine landscape prototypes, the application of AI in participatory design, thermal comfort, and the potential of e-waste. They worked at the scale of streets, urban districts, and coastlines.

The complexity of the lived landscapes in Singapore and Southeast Asia presents both challenges and opportunities for landscape architecture education and practice. They offer opportunities for the field to expand in new directions, taking on greater and more critical challenges facing cities and regions, beyond the confines of conventional practice. This volume offers glimpses of a future vision for landscape architecture. We welcome your thoughts and engagement in this collective endeavor to re-imagine the field and its possibilities.

A Year in Review The academic year 2024–2025 has been a vibrant journey of ideas and creativity for NUS Landscape Architecture. Together, we explored bold questions, shared our work with wider audiences, and celebrated the success of our students and faculty.

Our public lectures brought together voices from across our varied fields and beyond, each expanding our understanding of the possibility of creative design practice and research. Landscape architect Anton Siura’s Demolition and Reconstruction: Balancing Growth and Building with Nature challenged us to reflect on the tension between urban expansion and ecological resilience. Architects Jingru (Cyan) Cheng and Chen Zhan’s Drifting Bodies traced the shifting stories of sand, water, stone, and people, showing how material flows shape collective life. Artist Robert Zhao’s Entangled Histories invited us into the ecological narratives of Albizias, urging us to reconsider the layered histories of Singapore’s forests and their more-than-human, vegetative actors.

Our landscape research was shared through exhibitions, publications, and awarded grants. The 2025 Graduation Exhibition at the Department of Architecture celebrated the imagination and dedication of our graduating cohort, while participation in Singapore Design Week positioned our program within the broader design community positioned our program within the broader design community. Faculty members contributed new scholarship through the book launch of Periurban Cartographies: Kolkata’s ecologies and settled ruralities by Victoria Jane Marshall, which looks through the prism of the “almost urban” to consider what a “city” is or could be. As well as grant-funded research about Singapore’s Green Heritage by Maxime Decaudin and Terrence Chun Liang Tan, which argues for the unique history of Singapore’s urban greening as a form of heritage. Dorothy Tang’s grant-funded research on the Extended Landscapes of Zones looks at the effects —including settlement patterns, infrastructure, and environmental change—inside and outside of industrial zones. All three projects underscore landscape architecture’s expanding intellectual horizons from Asia.

This year also marked moments of pride and recognition through awards and honours.

Our students’ creativity and commitment in design studio were acknowledged with the Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects Student Design Awards. Furthermore, three alumni from the Master of Landscape Architecture Class of 2024 won the Honor Awards (Urban Design) in the 2024 American Society of Landscape Architecture Student Awards, affirming the program’s ongoing presence on regional and international stages.

Together, these events and accomplishments reflect the enthusiasm of our students and faculty. They remind us that landscape architecture is about shaping conversations and practices in addition to forming spaces that are poetic and powerful.

PUBLIC LECTURES

Demolition and Reconstruction: Balancing Growth and Building with Nature Anton Siura 3rd Apr 2025 SDE4, Level 5, Forum In this lecture, Anton Siura recounted his experience in urban redevelopment, where he witnessed a concerning policy: the systematic demolition inherent in spatial planning, influencing both urban and rural landscapes. Observations across Singapore and Indonesian urban development indicated a prioritisation of urbanisation, economic growth, and capital gains at the expense of conserving existing structures, forests, and agricultural lands. The lecture delved into retrospective insights derived from Anton’s extensive project involvement over the past 20 years, offering an analysis of both negative and positive outcomes. It questioned the sustainability of current practices and their implications for the future.

Student Reflection Lina Altoaimi (BLA 4) This lecture expanded my understanding of the systematic demolition of nature, culture, and social spaces to make way for urbanisation, as Anton Siura explored various means whereby landscape architects are able to step in to conserve, repurpose, and enhance existing spaces while pushing for sustainable urban growth. He shared examples of projects from his design studio that reused natural materials in a site-specific manner; forest clearings deemed necessary by governing bodies prompted the designers to repurpose the tree trunks in design, while excavated raw materials from a built site, such as stones and concrete, were reused as part of waterway naturalisation. The examples from his lecture prompted me to wonder how far we, as landscape architects, can meet capital interests while aiming for challenging sustainability goals, such as net-zero waste from the construction and development process.

Drifting Bodies: Entangled Stories of Sand, Water, Stone and PeopleJingru (Cyan) Cheng & Chen Zhan 20th Feb 2025 SDE4, Level 5, Forum The talk shared field encounters in Chen Zhang and Jingru Cheng’s ongoing journey of Tracing Sand in Southeast Asia. It was a pilgrimage of two architects trying to reconnect with the fundamental matter of what is around them: the concrete foundation, the lime mortar on the wall, and the window glass, all made of sand that came from rivers or land in one way or another. By extension, architecture comes from the earth in one way or another. They followed sand as a guide to unpack the cominginto-being of iconic sites—their form and materiality,

the energy that keeps them running, and how they enter the societal cultural imaginaries.

Student Reflection Clarissa Ke Li Wen (BLA 4) Attending Cheng and Zhan’s lecture made me see materials like sand and water in a new light.

They showed how these resources move across places and affect both the environment and people’s lives. I was interested in their examples of how infrastructure and construction are linked to stories of labour, ecology, and change. The talk helped me understand that architecture is not just about buildings, but also about the wider systems and relationships that shape them. It encouraged me to think more about the impact of the materials we often take for granted.

Entangled Histories: Albizias and the Making of New Ecologies Robert Zhao 16th Jan 2025 SDE4, Level 5, Forum

revealing a vitality and autonomy that resists categorisation. He reflected on the ways these forests are often dismissed as transient or invasive, redefining our understanding of time, adaptation, and coexistence.

In this talk, Robert Zhao delved into the entangled histories of Albizia trees (Albizia Moluccana) and the secondary forests of Singapore, such as those in Gillman Barracks. Once planted for economic purposes, Albizias have since become a resilient pioneer in disturbed landscapes, creating forests that defy human control and expectations. He went into depth about how these spaces act as living archives of human history, merging with the forest’s unpredictable and self-determined growth.

Through long-term observations, Zhao explored how secondary forests evolved on their own terms,

Student Reflection Shruthakeerthi Karthikeyan (MLA 1) This lecture by Robert Zhao gave me a new perspective on how to view landscapes. Through the lens of the Albizia trees, an oft-ignored species due to their tall form and shallow roots and hence, easy to fall, Zhao explored the resilience and significance of such species for secondary forests. The lecture was a riveting exploration of importance where it seems there is none, and it made me question the hidden value of everything that, at face value, may seem to have none.

Way Beyond Bigness: The Need for a Watershed Architecture

By Derek Hoeferlin and Duong Van Ni 3rd Oct 2024 SDE3, Level 4, LT 427, Design Forum Derek Hoeferlin introduced his book Way Beyond Bigness: The Need for a Watershed Architecture (Applied Research + Design Publishing, 2023), a design-research project that studies the Mekong, Mississippi and Rhine river basins. The lecture included a contribution by Dr. Duong Van Ni from Can Tho, Vietnam. His chapter contribution “Monitor” described his community-engaged efforts with local farmers to track aspects of climate change, such

as saline intrusion, to help inform coastal ecology and adaptation strategies in the Mekong Delta.

Student Reflection Akshitha Vadalakunta (MLA 1) The lecture highlighted how climate change demands design strategies that are both local and global. I found the framework explained in the lecture very relevant, as it explained how to bridge research with community practice. Dr. Duong’s project in the Mekong delta was inspiring in showing how ecology, farming, and livelihoods can be integrated. It made me reflect on the role of design in fostering resilience and supporting people’s adaptation to environmental challenges.

EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS

NUS Landscape Architecture Graduation Exhibition 2025 8th May- 29th May 2025 SDE 3, Level 1, Exhibition Space The NUS Landscape Architecture Graduation Exhibition showcased the work of NUS Landscape Architecture. This year marked the presentation of the second MLA cohort to complete an

independent design thesis project and the third graduating BLA cohort since the program’s establishment in 2020. The projects traversed advanced research and design topics that are pertinent to the current socio-ecological landscape, including the influence and use of AI in design, landscape infrastructures, climate change, land reclamation and sea level rise, and the afterlife of waste materials.

Singapore Design Week 26th September- 6th October 2024 SDE 3, Level 1, Exhibition Space In conjunction with Singapore Design Week, an annual festival celebrating creativity and innovation, NUS Landscape Architecture showcased student works in line with this year’s theme, People of Design, shedding light on the everyday visionaries that shape our society through design.

Periurban Cartographies: Kolkata’s Ecologies and Settled Ruralities

By Victoria Jane Marshall 4th October 2024 SDE 3, Level 4, Barrel Room Dr. Victoria Jane Marshall introduced her book, Periurban Cartographies. The book looks through the prism of the ‘almost urban’ to consider what a ‘city’ is or could be. In doing so, the book challenges assumptions and reconsiders design practices.

The research reported upon in this study draws on a thick description of everyday life and diffuse

power in periurban Gangetic West Bengal/Kolkata. It does so in the hope of enriching our understanding of incremental modes of political empowerment and the futures they make. The intention is not just to communicate the transformations at work in creating a particular ‘kind of urban’ but also to point to connections that make us rethink the ways in which change happens. She was introduced by Dr. Jane M Jacobs who has published on postcolonial geographies, the social production of built environments, the history of high-rise housing, the politics of urban heritage and comparative urbanism.

PLANTING DAY

Planting day organized by LAC 24th September 2024, 3rd December 2024, 24th Feburary 2025, and 22nd May 2025 NUS Nasi Ulam Forest Garden This academic year’s Planting Day events started on 24th September 2024, when student volunteers dug out native tree saplings throughout the Nasi Ulam Garden for cultivation in the campus nursery.

These saplings were given a new chance to grow, supporting tree-planting efforts across NUS. Over the holidays on 3rd December, students and staff from various faculties learnt proper propagation techniques through videos by the Landscape Architecture Collective (LAC) student maintenance team. Alika Ho Wei Lun, an edible gardener, then led a live demonstration of proper propagation methods using his new flowering species. Following this, volunteers topped up the nursery bag with soil and

mulch, labelling them for easy future identification.

The fruits of their labour were harvested on 24th February 2025 with the largest turnout to date.

Volunteers harvested an abundance of edible plants and recycled the leaf litter under the trees as compost material. The day ended with a communal feast at CDE Buzzy Kitchen using their freshly harvested goods.

Continuing the learning on 22nd May, Akila Ho and special guest Boo Chih Min, an expert flora surveyor, taught the volunteers ways to identify native forest saplings and spontaneous vegetation. The opportunity to have first-hand practice in the garden made species identification easier. Key species, especially native tree saplings, were tagged and transplanted, and unwanted weeds were removed.

The process was an amalgamation of indoor and outdoor learning.

AWARDS AND HONOURS

SILA Student Design Awards Nine undergraduate and master’s students from the NUS Landscape Architecture programme triumphed in the Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA) Student Design Awards 2024 entitled Beyond Just Green, under the University Category.

The theme Beyond Just Green epitomised the intellectual rigour of the profession, inspiring creative design solutions within parameters determined by research and analysis. It aimed to raise awareness that landscape architecture extends beyond the ‘green’ norms of designing with plants and gardens.

ASLA Student Award The alumni from the Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) Class of 2024, Luoman Ouyang, Zhiyi Guo and Jiaxin Jiang, supervised by Dr. Victoria Jane Marshall, won the Honor Awards (Urban Design) in the 2024 ASLA Student Awards for their design coursework for module LA4702 MLA Density Studio.

Their award-winning project, titled From Remnants to Resonance: Reimagine Coastal Fishing Villages, addressed the significant ecological and social impacts of the 2023 discharge of nuclear wastewater

in Japan on the country’s fishing industry. The project envisioned a sustainable future for coastal fishing villages like Choshi by transforming the coastline from remnants into resource landscapes for both humans and non-humans. The team selected a one kilometer square site in Choshi City as a case study and proposed a new model for the future development of Japanese fishing villages.

The awards jury praised the project for its rich graphics, powerful purpose and detailed plant remediation information.

SENSING LANDSCAPE LAD1001 - Design 1

The Way of Ficus Tree: Aesthetics of Survival Strategies by Bian Chuqi (BLA 1) focused on the Ficus tree and its role as an anchor of ecological storytelling. Using Clementi Woods Park as the site, this project takes inspiration from the form and features of the Ficus tree to enhance the connection between the created landscape and the tree species.

This foundation-level core studio, Sensing Landscape, introduced students to the fundamental elements and design language of landscape architecture, emphasising forms, relationships, functions, and dynamic processes. Through fieldwork, iterative drawing, and model-making, students observed, documented, and interpreted natural phenomena as design inspiration, fostering spaces where natural and artificial elements coexist. The studio explored ‘landscape as a process,’ focusing on the evolving relationship between humans and nature. Three exercises—Sense Landscapes, Deconstruct Landscapes, and Reassemble Landscapes—guide students to develop spatial literacy, analyse landscape elements, and create hybrid spaces that integrate ecological and human needs, supported by clear representation and effective presentation skills.

Water Lilies: Near, Far, Wherever You Are by Javin Thiam Lok Yeo (BLA 1) explored the duality of waterlilies, which, though they may appear peaceful and neat on the surface, are chaotic and messy underwater. This new perspective is provided through a sunken bridge that allowed for a link and appreciation between humans and nature.

Layers of Time by Terrance Jia Ren Tan (BLA 1) pondered the layers and complexities of a forest by treating it as a living entity. This experiential design, thus, highlighted the process of forest growth and its various stages including features like decay, canopy expansion, light interplay, etc., through its terrain.

EPHEMERAL LANDSCAPE LAD1005 - Design 2

Alta Terra: The Lens and the Story by Justin Qi Zhi Chew (BLA 1) approached the design through the lens of a filmmaker and photographer, seeking emotional resonance within the landscape. Through curated visual framing, that is, organising views into hardscape, softscape, and pathway-based perspectives, the design resembled an abstract bird’s nest and harmonises with the existing landscape.

The Experiential Landscape studio aimed at strengthening students’ knowledge and practice of the design process while introducing new representational, analytical, and technical skills. The overarching theme of the studio was the phenomenological dimension of landscapes. The course focused on the designer’s capacity to create spatial and sensorial experiences. It asked: How do you produce an experience? What are your sources of inspiration? Which tools, techniques, and strategies do you adopt to create a space? How do you manipulate spatial qualities? Through an iterative and experimental sequence of exercises structured around three major projects, students gained the foundational skills and knowledge required to confidently tackle more challenging complexities in the second year. Taking inspiration from cinema, Project One focused on creating an experience through abstraction and conceptualisation. Project Two introduced new digital representation techniques to observe and analyse the experiential qualities of a given site. Students used drawings as analytical tools before developing design strategies to manipulate these sensorial qualities in line with their concepts imagined in Project One. The success of a spatial experience being proportional to the quality of its realisation, Project Three focused on the scale of materials and construction details.

Blurred Boundaries by Umiko Xi Wen Ng (BLA 1) reimagined Clementi Woods Park as a living system where memory, community, and ecology converge. Drawing inspiration from Singapore’s Bishan Ang Mo Kio park, the project incorporated gentle slopes and natural depressions to channel rainwater, mitigate floods, and enhance groundwater recharge.

The Dwelling Place of Light by Paul Ze En Yee (BLA 1) turned emotions into spatial form using lights and shadows across Clementi Woods. In using light as the form giver, the project obscured views and carved paths that create sculpted playscapes that are interwoven with the terrain for the kindergarten children. Light, thus, became a quiet companion of the spatial experience.

(mis)READING & (re)WRITING THE SITE LAD2006 - Design 3

Lin Yifeng, Varit Charoenveingvechkit, Victor Kuan, Jasmine Tay, Zihao Wong

Vista Verde @ Clarke Quay by Alina Ting Yu Lee (BLA 2) identified the lack of harmony in the elements of Clarke Quay- a site which once carried the sites of Fort Canning, which are now covered by high-rise buildings. The proposal sought to find a way to return this view to the site alongside proposals like cycling and jogging routes, parks, and nature frames to create a sense of attachment and belonging to the space.

The (mis)Reading & (re)Writing the Site design studio explored foundational approaches to landscape architecture with a focus on the significance of the site. Framed by the theme Landscape as Site, the studio investigated human–nature relationships within complex urban environments through rigorous site analysis and interpretation. Emphasis is placed on understanding spatial morphology and environmental conditions, ranging from urban configurations and indoor–outdoor thresholds to vegetation, fauna, and microclimate. Students developed skills in topographic manipulation and contextual responses to existing or proposed urban forms. The studio also prioritised clear communication of design intent through drawing, digital and physical modelling, and other representational strategies.

Ridgeline Park: Reigniting Spontaneous Activity in Clarke Quay by Layla Grace O’Connor (BLA 2) designed a park that reflects on Clark Quay thirty years ago, which was a hub for recreational activities surrounding the Teochew community. The proposal, therefore, designed a park for spontaneous activities like picnics, people watching and busking while leaving room for large scale events, festivals and markets.

COMMON CORRIDORS LAD2007 - Design 4

Terrence Chun Liang Tan, Larry Yueng, Victor Kuan, Ruen Qing Wong, Varit Charoenveingvechkit, Rosita Samsudin Tutors:

Bycicle! Utopia by Trenyce Jia Xin Chong (BLA 2) built on Chompang’s established cycling culture and location, and through design upgraded the infrastructure to create the ideal cycling pit stop. The provisions for this design included features like secure bike parking, rest areas, food, retail and market experiences, etc. The design added value to everyday urban spaces.

The Common Corridors Studio developed competence in design and critical thinking by increasing the scale and complexity of the design task. Students were challenged to investigate how high-density neighbourhood landscape design can be reimaged to cater to various user groups. They were asked to identify strategies to maximise ecosystem benefits while considering the liveability of local residents and the project’s long-term sustainability. Through interactions and participatory workshops with the community members, students developed an understanding of competing landscape interests and how they can be managed. They also worked across a range of representational modes, including technical diagrams and three-dimensional physical/digital modelling, to develop confidence in communicating their design proposal’s functional and aesthetic metrics to a broad audience.

My Chong Pang, Our Story by Sumaiya Azad (BLA 2) enhanced the living heritage of Chongpang by honouring old memories, building community pride, and fostering intergenerational bonds. The design does so by introducing CP Treats Dine-In, Plazas, and Park Networks, all designed to be near schools and senior amenities. In doing so, it also enhanced the overall connectivity and the experience of moving through Chongpang.

TWO GOOD MINUTES LAD3001 - Design 5

Gillman’s Workshop by Qin Hui Ong (BLA 3) envisioned a forest bathing experience- a journey of profound solace and renewal. The design engaged all of the senses to create a multi-sensory engagement that nurtures the tranquillity of nature. By fostering a space for wildlife and humans to flourish, the park enlightens minds, nourishes souls, and leaves an enduring connection.

Two Good Minutes design studio focused on digitally driven landscape architectural tools and techniques. The specific aim of this studio was to provide the necessary exposure to state-of-the-art technologies and techniques, including digitally driven site data acquisition and analysis, form making, as well as visual representations. It was organised into a series of workshops which exposed students to a range of innovative and potentially paradigm-shifting digital tools and techniques. Underlying this digital focus was the idea of using play as a driver in landscape design or ‘playscapes’. Here, the students were not confining themselves to any particular demographic (e.g. children) but rather looking at designed landscapes as a public amenity designed for the enjoyment of its users. Vertical Exchange by Seh Ting Soh (BLA 3) proposed a new clustering method based on material synergies rather than functional categories that could replace horizontally zoned industrial estates. The design reimagined industrial estates as dense, circular ecosystems where space, material, and knowledge flow together.

Industrial Ecologies studio explored how the legacies of modernist development planning in Singapore interacted with landscape architecture. In this urban design and infrastructure-based studio, students challenged conventional notions of landscape and urban design and explored how landscape operations can be the basis for design. By mapping the spaces of material extraction to final consumption, they gained a greater picture of the resources, infrastructure, and labor that shape the landscapes supporting our essential needs. The following questions emerged: What are the social, economic, and environmental consequences of an industrial based economy? What vulnerabilities does a small nation state—such as Singapore—face with limited resource hinterlands and market? How can we build industrial spaces that attend to spatial and environmental justice? These inquiries are centered around the relationship between economic policy and their spatial expression on the ground, and informed a critical position on the agency of landscape interventions. Furthermore, it challenged conventional notions of landscape practice and speculated on the future of our profession.

Mari-crete by Qin Hui Ong (BLA 3) explored the reuse of steel slag, an industrial byproduct, to create 3D-printed concrete roof structures that support oyster cultivation. These reefs contribute to marine restoration, create a circular economy and also align with the Industry 5.0 framework, which emphasises human-centric, valuedriven, and intelligent manufacturing.

Scrap to Structure: Reconstructing Singapore With Recycled Steel by Van Trang Dang (BLA 3) proposed a radical redesign to utilise demolition and construction waste to create a central hub for a circular construction economy. The project used recycling facilities, smarter sorting systems, scrap galleries and policy incentives to envision a better Singapore built from scrap.

Living in Mutual Symbiosis by Qingyi Wu (MLA 1) addressed the ignored needs of the ageing population in Singapore in Pasir Ris Town Park. The design envisioned a new housing model with intertwined indoor and outdoor spaces, shared living and working spaces, and other strategies that encourage intergenerational collaboration. The design engaged ecological succession creatively, and offers a pilot program to address social and economic challenges faced by the elderly.

Since 1965, nature has been central to urban policy in Singapore. ‘What nature’ is an important question, for there have been various interpretations on the topic, each with powerful spatial outcomes and roles for landscape architects. Given the variety of interpretations, it might be reasoned that ideas of nature and society are not stable here. The Fifth Nature studio was positioned in this productive dialogue between design and policy. Overall, the studio’s emphasis is to function as a creative research hub that produces many scenarios. That is, the fifth nature studio is a space of multiplicity – a shared container full of many possibilities. This studio was the first of a three-year pedagogy project. The student projects formed the beginning phase of a 2024-2026 community of practice on the topic of Singapore’s fifth nature-society at the Department of Architecture.

Land of Resonance by Xinyang Du (MLA 1) balanced human access with the movement of non-human species like shorebirds, fish, and mudflat organisms. The project used spatial strategies to incorporate the traditional cultural identities of Yishun Dam, to create an affective shared space. Some key proposals included recognition of migratory timelines and response, elevated roads and pedestrian paths, among the creation of delicate spaces for cultural activities.

Niche Construction in Disturbance by Qinying Zhou (MLA 1) utilised Telok Blangah as a study area to demonstrate the troubled relationship between humans and nonhumans in secondary forests. The design allowed for an adaptation that allows for dynamic coexistence within a changing environment. This was done through three stages: HDB cycle (hybrid ecology), multispecies coexistence (shift to socio-ecological organisation), and dynamic rewilding (formation of an ecological core).

THE SINGAPORE ISLANDS: REDEFINING SOUTHERN AND WESTERN ISLANDS LAD4002 Design 8 / LA4702 MLA Studio: Option studio I

Fieldwork: From February 14th to 16th, the students of the Singapore Islands option studio explored Singapore’s Western and Southern Islands. Over the two-day trip, students were treated to guided tours and boat rides to view the islands. With guidance from Lisa Lim and Richard Kuah, students could understand the different islands’ visible present, invisible past and potential future.

From Compressed Edges to Living Interfaces by Yuanyuan Yang (MLA 1) analysed the artificial and natural coastlines of Singapore’s Southern Islands and proposed a coral reef restoration and hybrid sea wall project. The design asked, can communities

be engaged with dialogue on water? It uses public stewardship and invitation, and a community platform to created an adaptable coastline that restores the islands’ ecology and fosters eco-tourism.

Singapore is often understood as an island, when it actually comprises more than 64 islands and islets. Over the years, because of land reclamation, aggregation of small islands, and resistance to natural forces, Singapore’s coastline and islands have morphed to become the image that we recognise today. The Singapore Island design option studio reimagined how today’s Singapore Islands might look in the future when the ports are moved to Tuas Mega Port, and the Southern Waterfront and Long Island plans are in place. Might it be an opportunity to relook at our relationship with water and fellow islands?

Rhythm of the Tide by Yu Wei Chang (BLA 4) thought from the lens of tourism, the potential for a resort on Lazarus’ Island for families and small groups of friends/family for weekend staycation getaways, and reimagined the coastal resort as a space shaped

by nature’s cadence. Inspired by the Orang Laut (sea people), the design used the rhythm of the wave and nature to sensitively site and design a resort that guides guests into a journey of movement and stillness, framed by the ocean’s moods.

Uncage: A Refugia for Birds by Cleon Yi Hui Lai (BLA 4) asked, with growing developments on the mainland, what will be the impacts to bird life? The design proposed to develop the Southern Islands into a refugia for bird life that comes in from the south of Singapore by studying their existing habitats and identifying reception,

bridging and sink zones to retain birds that move stochastically into the island cluster.

The terrestrial design in the islands of Kias, St John’s and Sisters’ improved forest, wetland and grassland niches for terrestrial birds, and complemented the marine habitats currently in place.

REBOOTING PEARL’S HILL: COMPUTATIONAL AND AI DRIVEN STUDIO LAD4002 Design 8 / A4702 MLA Studio: Option studio II

Nature as an Everyday Journey by Kejie Li (MLA 1) created a two-layered pathway system- a fast-access network and a scenic ground-level network to cater to different groups of people. With an AI-assisted workflow, with manual refinements, the project achieved both creative richness and realistic spatial qualities.

AI-generated images are winning photography awards, books are being written by AI instead of authors, and even architects are worried about losing their jobs as AI replaces our warm bodies at our desks. Certainly, landscape architecture has to follow suit with a discourse on its use in our discipline. The second run of this AI-driven options studio sought to further accelerate the challenge of adapting and incorporating AI into our ever-expanding quiver of digital tools and to work together as a studio to see how we rapidly absorb these processes into our machined landscapes of the future.

The Urban Canopy: A Vertical Jungle on Pearl’s Hill by Guangyuan Wen (MLA 1) designed a continuous spatial journey across 3 layers: the ground, the forest floor, and the canopy. The project focused on creating a fluid experience of gathering, exploration, and elevation through AI-assisted workflows and human-machine collaboration.

Through the Hills by Simon Chee Ann Seah (BLA 4) conceived Pearl’s Hill Park as an immersive connective journey using water as a guiding element. The design, aided by AI, evolved through numerous iterations, leading to integrated rainwater pathways, strategic tunnel entrances and stairs. The final design included lookout points, community gardens and new circulation routes that blend in its social and ecological functions.

PATTERNS AND FUNCTIONS IN LANDSCAPES: PROTOTYPING NEIGHBOURHOOD LANDSCAPES IN A DENSIFYING HONG KONG LAD4002 Design 8 / LA4702 MLA Studio: Option studio III

Fieldwork: During a field trip to Hong Kong from February 9 to 15, 2025, students examined the city’s varied landscapes, from mountains to highdensity apartment complexes. Their fieldwork involved on-site validation, observations, measurements, interviews, and community engagement.

Temporal Hybridity by Yingzhao Chen (MLA 1) took Sheung Shui Wai and its neighbouring factory cluster, and asked how public space provision and heritage can be safeguarded alongside the rising residential capacity. Through redistributed circulation, new plazas, courtyards and service points, and invested place-making, it created a flexible framework for steady and inclusive growth.

Land Re/Coded by Mariam Yusuf (BLA 4) tackled Hong Kong’s land scarcity and growing population through brownfield development. The project saw waste landscapes as a catalyst for closing localised loops and supporting new developments where architecture and landscape harness waste to meet the growing demands of urban expansion.

The Patterns and Functions in Landscape option studio investigated how urban development in densifying Hong Kong can minimise impacts on existing socio-ecological systems while maximising human benefits. Focusing on neighbourhood landscapes along the Hong Kong–Shenzhen border, students explored how urban design can incorporate pattern-processfunction relationships in the planning and designing process. The studio challenged students to identify and quantify the benefits of such approaches and proposed sustainable neighbourhood typologies. Emphasis was also placed on how design investigations and conjectures inform and serve as testbeds for research. Through mapping, pattern analysis, and visioning, students developed critical, data-driven strategies for resilient, multifunctional urban landscapes.

Aggregating Landscape by Lina Altoaimi (BLA 4) transformed the Ng Tung River from a concrete canal back to an ecologically viable space for a multifunctional, multi-axis revitalisation and land sharing. It densified both nature and human spaces and the restoration of nature at larger and more rigorous, aggregated scales.

Post Infrastructure: (Re)Routing Urban Water Systems by Deston Seah Yun Zhang (BLA 4) proposed the transformation of an ecologically fragmented habitat through careful positioning of blue and green spaces to promote sustainable stormwater management, water recycling, and habitat enhancement. By prioritising a landscape-first approach, the project envisions a post-industrial, water-integrated community.

Aging in Motion: A Landscape in Transit by Kaena Sutanu (BLA 4) reconceptualised Harumi-Chuo as an intergenerational urban district that evolves with its ageing population. It transformed the existing urban fabric through adaptable housing, inclusive public spaces, and innovative transit networks to support mobility and

ageing in place. A central Ginkgo Forest serves as a seasonal landmark, offering sensory and spatial continuity across generations. Together, these elements formed a resilient, transit-oriented landscape where everyday movement is transformed into a cinematic experience.

The Post Mega Games design option studio examined the long-term urban and landscape implications of mega-events through the lens of Tokyo’s 2020 Olympic Games. Focusing on the Harumi waterfront district—formerly the Olympic Village—students critically evaluated the site’s current post-Games trajectory and explored alternative futures that prioritised resilience, inclusivity, and environmental sustainability. The studio probed the tension between maintaining large-scale planning frameworks and adapting to localised urban and ecological needs. Through site analysis, design speculation, and scenario testing, students engaged with broader questions about landscape architecture’s role in shaping meaningful and enduring legacies in the wake of global spectacle.

Waters of Renewal by Xinyang Du (MLA 1) revived the identity and cultural heritage of the water in Harumi. It drew a connection from Tsukiji and Tsukishima to create a holistic, water-centric urban experience. KOLKATA: PERIURBAN, POST RURAL AND RURAL INTENSIFICATION LAD4002 Design 8 / LA4702 MLA Studio: Option studio V

Fieldwork: From February 23rd to March 2nd, the students from the Kolkata option studio conducted fieldwork in and around Kolkata, focusing on the peri-urban spaces along the railway line from Ballygunge to Canning. Their study centered around four key stations- Bidhyadatpur, Kalikapur, Champahati and Piyali- each with its own distinct spatial, ecological, and socio-economic makeup.

The Kolkata option studio focused on the edge of Kolkata, India. Typically, the edges of cities are thought of as not much more than ‘becoming urban’. In this studio, students looked anew at that assumption by asking the following questions. What can be learnt from thinking about the future in areas where the challenges of urbanisation and agricultural intensification are entangled? What if architects, landscape architects, and urban designers’ practices and projects anticipated the hybrid, urban-rural future? If so, what forms might it take here? Furthermore, can they critique the notion of the urban edge, for processes of urbanisation are now everywhere? Using the tools and methods of landscape and architecture design and practice, the studio outcomes included designed elements like buildings, gardens, parks, and forming an infrastructure. Importantly for periurban creative design practice, it answered the question of who/what does what when?

Reclaiming Water Agency by Shruthakeerthi Karthikeyan (MLA 1) examined the complexities of water poverty and its weaponisation in periurban areas and sought to give power back to farmers through water landscape design. This is done through analysing existing practices that can be improved to the farmers’ advantage, as well as introducing new farming practices and structures that advance the culturally rooted behaviours of Kolkata’s periurban residents and institutions.

Healed by Time by Akshita Vadalakunta (MLA 1) reimagined Haral, a firework manufacturing town in periurban Kolkata, as a brickscape where time and sun heal the scars left by the industry. It dealt with the renewal of land, water, and air, and proposed an alternate lifestyle of manufacturing eco-bricks using the existing resources of the village. It spopke to the role of design in shaping a slow transformation of place after a lifetime of damage.

Fieldwork: The students of Suzhou Options studio engaged in a field trip to their site on Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP, 苏州工业区) as their site visit and urban fieldwork analysis.

Incorporated within the one-week trip were visits to various sites, companies and a workshop co-hosted by Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University (XJTLU, 西交利物浦大学) with their design school students.

Use It As It Is by Wayne Pei Wee Tan (BLA 4) (With Gao Ziyu, and Natasha Schippenkoetter) explored the potential of an underutilised and informal landscape in Suzhou as spaces for dynamic engagement and adaptability. Built around the three pillars of social, natural and economic fluxus, the design reframed streetscapes as fluid connectors for evolving interaction.

Re-envisioning the China-Singapore Suzhou Industry Park option studio adopted the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) as a site of inquiry, after 30 years of a successful government-to-government (G2G) experiment. The original 1994 SIP Master Plan of 70 sq km was expanded in 2001 to include new ecological networks and altered shareholding between China and Singapore, and the city grew to its current size of 278 sq km. SIP is an exemplary site of statecraft, and also an experiment in knowledge transfer and expertise exchange. As a post-Fordist site, it has a spatial logic that privileges specific kinds of global labour, expertise and services, and it requires strong policies and institutional frameworks to excel. Students collaborated in interdisciplinary teams to envision SIP’s future for the next 30 years.

IATA:SKY by Siqi Luo (MLA 1) (with Tommy Lee Tend Long, and Chen Yifan) proposed a bold three-phase revitalisation of Suzhou Industrial Park’s central waterfront district, transforming it into a vibrant nexus of aerial mobility, culture and community. The phases included construction of link bridges and expanded waterways, construction of the Suzhou Air Transport Hub, and finally, a new skyline that works together to enable an open, breathable urban fabric above.

Where Cities Grow Themselves: Reimagining Baitang as a Circular Ecological CBD by Izwan Shah (BLA 4) (with Zhang Kaixiang, and The Zhi Xian Sean) questioned whether an industrial district can become more than just a machine for GDP. The project, thus, imagined a city that no longer relies on zoning boundaries or monuments to define it.

Baitang, instead, grows through integration. The design transformed the space with interlocking urban systems that weave in with naturalised green looks that together embed nature into the DNA of its form.

This dissertation explored the application of generative image AI in inclusive and efficient participatory landscape design. The advantages and limitations of traditional design methods in participatory landscape design were analysed . The research then focused on integrating generative AI techniques with participatory design using tools such as Stable Diffusion, ChatGPT and Python.

THE AFTERLIFE OF METALS: REIMAGINING E-WASTE AS LANDSCAPE POTENTIAL

As technology advances and consumerist lifestyles spread globally, electronic waste has become one of the fastest-growing solid waste streams. The informal recycling of e-waste, along with rapid energy transitions and technological innovation, creates a false perception of metal scarcity, intensifying demand for traditional mining. Yet both systems cause similar problems— heavy metal pollution and environmental injustice.

This dissertation proposed a regenerative, circular alternative to the linear ‘take–make–dispose’ model, grounded in cradle-to-cradle design thinking. It

DESIGNING WITH CHANGE: STRATEGIES FOR CLIMATE ADAPTIVE COASTLINE MANAGEMENT IN BALI

Many Southeast Asian islands have experienced significant coastline changes driven by both natural and human-induced factors, impacting coastal ecosystems and local livelihoods. In Bali, a well-known tourist destination where tourism relies heavily on coastal resources, severe coastal erosion demands urgent and holistic solutions. However, existing coastal management tends to prioritise erosion control through single-method approaches, often overlooking habitat destruction and long-term resilience.

This design research proposed a climate-adaptive coastline management framework using three approaches.

First, it leveraged coastal dynamics—such as sediment

erosion, tidal movement, and marine debris—to create multifunctional landscapes that support habitat enhancement while accommodating human use. Second, it employed Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) to balance environmental conservation, economic development, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. Third, it incorporated traditional wisdom, such as Sasi Laut practice, which involves manipulating water areas to regenerate ecosystems and ensure long-term livelihood security. By applying these strategies, the study proposed an alternative coastal landscape model that fosters economic growth while conserving natural systems, paving the way for a socio-ecologically resilient island.

THERMAL COMFORT-ORIENTED STREET SPACE REDESIGN CENTERED ON FOOD DELIVERY WORKERS IN LUJIAZUI, SHANGHAI

This project focuses on the real-life delivery routes and working conditions of food delivery workers in Lujiazui, Shanghai. By closely examining their daily routines, movement patterns, and the environmental challenges they face—particularly those related to extreme heat and urban microclimates—the study seeks to propose targeted optimisations to the current delivery system. In order to enhance the safety, comfort, and efficiency of their working environment, the project rethinks and redesigns outdoor spaces such as streets, sidewalks, and rest points through a people-centred and climate-responsive lens.

Two specific sites are selected for in-depth design intervention: one located in the high-density central business district (CBD), and the other in a nearby residential area that frequently appears in delivery routes. Through design strategies including the addition of greenery, the provision of shaded areas, the introduction of resting and waiting spaces, and the reorganisation of street layouts to reduce heat exposure and improve circulation, the project aims to improve the overall thermal comfort of urban outdoor environments. Ultimately, this design research offers a practical and human-centred approach to making fast-paced, high-temperature urban areas more inclusive and resilient for vulnerable worker groups.

PROTECTING HUTONG CULTURE IN NANLUOGUXIANG: FINDING A BALANCE BETWEEN COMMERCIALIZATION AND MUSEUMIFICATION

This project aimed to achieve the sustainable revitalisation of Beijing’s hutong heritage spaces through the concept of a Living Museum. Focusing on three core principles: living space, living culture, and living community, it sought to balance sustainable revitalisation with the coexistence of museumification and over-commercialisation. In response to crowd surges and the cultural dilution caused by excessive commercialisation, the design proposed a phased strategy of crown management, cultural placemaking

of heritage buildings, and community symbiosis.

In the short term, improvements to the slow-traffic system, pedestrian pathways, and signage enhance the visitor experience. In the mid-to-long term, adaptive reuse transform museumified heritage spaces into artist co-working studios, cultural-themed shops, and active spaces, while implementing a community heritage fund circulation mechanism, where commercial rental revenues contribute to heritage restoration and community development.

LET THE EVOLVING LAND SAVE BANGKOK BAY: THE TRANSFORMATION OF MARGINALIZED LAND OF LARGE COASTAL CITIES IN ASIA DOMINATED BY CLIMATE CHANGE

The irreversible acceleration of sea level rise poses a major threat to high-density urban areas like Bangkok and other coastal cities in Thailand that have been, until recently, protected by the coastal ecosytems of the Gulf of Thailand. These extensive coastal areas are typically inhabited by marginalized people. The most representative is at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok Bay. In response, my thesis proposed a novel, incremental landscape strategy to restabilize the marginalised coastal settlements along the Gulf of Bangkok. Through

several spatial tactics, the project reduced the rate of land erosion and ameliorates the damage and impact of storm surges. This provided the context for the development of several industries corresponding to the sea level over different time periods. Each household would thus be able to continue to cultivation and develop a new livelihood without giving up their land.

It is a feasible strategy that is replicable, thus providing a climate-adaptive survival model for other similarly, marginalised settlements along the Gulf of Thailand.

EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF VISUAL ELEMENTS ON PERCEIVED OUTDOOR THERMAL COMFORT

Outdoor thermal comfort plays a crucial role in determining the quality of outdoor spaces. Research has led to the development of various heat indices, such as the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) and the Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET). However, these indices do not fully capture the thermal comfort of a given location, as thermal perception varies depending on factors such as location, season, and population type, even under the same temperature conditions. Furthermore, studies have shown that thermal perception is influenced not only by environmental conditions but also by physiological factors. In addition, recent research has found that visual

elements significantly affect outdoor thermal comfort.

This study adopted an approach that combined computer vision and thermal votes to explore the relationship between urban visual elements and thermal perception.

By collecting votes from 317 students at the National University of Singapore, the study successfully trained a tree-based model to predict people’s thermal comfort level based on images. Using Shapley Additive Explanation (SHAP), the research further identified how visual elements influence thermal perception, thereby providing insights for landscape architecture and urban design.

RESEARCH AND PRACTICE ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF URBAN PSYCHOBOUNDARIES FROM ANCIENT FENG SHUI THEORIES TO NEW ELEMENTS OF MODERN CITIES (USING THE METRO AS AN EXAMPLE)

This study explored how the Feng Shui theory shaped ancient urban space, how it has evolved, and the possible role of design in increasing its legibility today. Focusing on Nanjing, the research reviewed the city’s ideal Feng Shuibased spatial layout, as well as changes made during the Ming Dynasty due to political and religious influences. In modernity, Nanjing’s urban functions have expanded, and traditional Feng Shui logic has gradually been replaced by

The metro system, in particular, has reshaped residents’ spatial perception but lacks the spatial identity of the surface city, causing a blurring of psychological boundaries. CYBORG OASIS: A POST-HUMAN WONDERLAND

In an imagined era, where boundaries between the organic and the artificial dissolve, my project unfolded as a sensory journey through cyborg-nature. Gene editing opens up the possibility of shaping nature, while wearable devices bridge perception and reality, changing how nature might be sensed and made sense of.

by AR glasses, bio-bracelets, and neural headsets, they rediscover nature’s resilience. They encounter sprawling networks of mycelium, gene-edited plants flourishing into spectacular forms, and mast-fruiting trees synchronized to algorithmic rhythms. Here, technology translates, nature architects, and humanity catalyzes— each reshaping the other in a symbiotic choreography where creation is collective, and evolution is shared.
