Everyday Modernism: Architecture and Society in Singapore Everyday Modernism is the first comprehensive documentation of Singapore’s modern built environment. Through a lens of social and architectural histories, the book uncovers the many untold stories of the Southeast Asian city-state’s modernization, from the rise of heroic skyscrapers, such as the Pearl Bank Apartments, to the spread of utilitarian typologies like the multistorey car park. It investigates how modernism, through both form and function, radically transformed Singapore and made its inhabitants into modern citizens.

The book’s 33 essays are richly illustrated with some 200 archival images and drawings, as well as more than 100 contemporary photos by architectural photographer Darren Soh. By examining the evolution of the once exceptional into the typical and by learning how abstract spaces become lived places, the book traces how modernism has become part of everyday life in Singapore.

Jiat-Hwee Chang is associate professor at the Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore.

Justin Zhuang is a writer and researcher based in Singapore, and co-founder of writing studio In Plain Words.

Innovation, Style and Spectacle in Wayang: Purbo Asmoro and the Evolution of an Indonesian Performing Art Wayang fascinates and endures thanks to the many ways it works as a medium—as bearer of Javanese culture and tradition, as key component of rites of passage, as a medium of ritual and spiritual practice, as public spectacle, and as entertainment of the broadest sort, performed live, broadcast or streamed. Over the last 40 years, the form has been subject to a great deal of experimentation and innovation within an ever-changing media landscape, shaped in the most recent years by the constraints of pandemic response. Author Kathryn Emerson outlines both the significant contributions by a number of key figures, and the societal or political influences propelling such innovations. She describes the deeper and more lasting changes in wayang, based on what the art form’s most accomplished practitioners have to say about it.

The ultimate focus of the work is one pivotal figure, Purbo Asmoro of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Surakarta, who the author argues has taken the individual and singular innovations of the era and integrated them into a new system of performance practice, one which has shaped the key Surakarta school. The book is based on an unprecedented decadeslong participatory research project involving hundreds of interlocutors. Written in a lively style and beautifully illustrated, the book will be of considerable interest in Indonesian studies, to wayang connoisseurs, and to anyone seeking to learn about a dynamic, contemporary art form that finds its energy outside the structures of Western theatre and media.

The Comfort Women of Singapore in History and Memory The role of “comfort women” in the Japanese empire of the Second World War remains a topic of importance—and emotion—around the world. Most scholarship concentrates on Korean comfort women, with less on their counterparts in Japan, China, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. It is well-known that an elaborate series of comfort stations were organised by the Japanese administration across Singapore during the Occupation from 1942 to 1945.

So why did no local former comfort women come forward and tell their stories when others across Asia began to do so publicly in the 1990s? To understand this silence, the book details the sex industry serving the Japanese military during the wartime occupation of Singapore: the comfort stations, managers, procuresses, girls and women who either volunteered or were forced into service and in many cases sexual slavery. The immediate post-war years, and efforts to repatriate or “reform” former comfort women fills in a key part of the history.

The author then turns from history to the public presence of the comfort women in Singapore’s memory: newspapers, novels, plays, television, and touristic heritage sites, showing how comfort women became known in Singapore during the 1990s and 2000s. Blackburn brings great care, balance and sensitivity to a difficult subject.

Kevin Blackburn is an associate professor in History at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He has published a number of books including War Memory and the Making of Modern Malaysia and Singapore (NUS Press, 2012).

Workers and Democracy: The Indonesian Labour Movement, 1949–1957 A study of worker activism and labour unions in the eight years between the recognition of Indonesian sovereignty by the Netherlands at the end of 1949 and the nationalisation of Dutch assets in 1957, Workers and Democracy contributes to the ongoing re-evaluation of the era of liberal parliamentary democracy in Indonesia. The focus is on the agency of workers and the structures, strategies and industrial campaigns of unions in the context of intense ideological conflict, competing union federations, the opposition of employers to collective action and the efforts by the Indonesian state to manage industrial conflict.

The imposition of martial law in March 1957 was the deathblow to parliamentary democracy and to the freedom of workers and unions to engage in collective action. It was not until Suharto’s “New Order” regime collapsed in 1998 that Indonesian workers regained the freedom of association and the right to engage in collective action.

John Ingleson is an emeritus professor of history at the University of New South Wales who has written widely on 20th-century Indonesian history.

To Remain Myself: The History of Onghokham This is a particularly vivid biography of a remarkable individual, an Indonesian historian and public intellectual who was both a public figure and a multi-minority member, being Dutch educated, Indonesian Chinese, gay, alcoholic, irreligious and hedonist, in a conservative society.

This biography breaks out of the Indonesian Chinese category; it is primarily an Indonesian story. In its early chapters, this book reveals much about the “sugar king“ Chinese aristocracy of Indonesia from the inside. In its later chapters, it examines the development of Indonesians writing their own post-colonial history, and the intellectual influences on this writing.

Onghokham was a senior public intellectual with over 300 writings over 50 years, containing original insights into many varied Indonesian topics, including colonial history and its effects on modern politics and society; the Indonesian Chinese; “outsiders”—marginal people; the jago or brigand as people’s champion; sexuality in Indonesia past and present; food; the Oedipus complex; painting; traditional Javanese beliefs from the palace to the peasant.

Stone Masters: Power Encounters in Mainland Southeast Asia Stones and those who speak for and to them are an important focus of animist religious practice in Southeast Asia, sometimes integrated into world religions, and sometimes not. Recent study of animism sees animist ritual not as a metaphor for “a community” or commonly held values, but as a way of forming and maintaining relationships with occult presences understood to be very real. City pillars, statues, megaliths, termite mounds, mountains, rocks found in forests, stones that have been moved to shrines, all these make their appearance in this book, as do the territorial cults which can form around them. The contributors extend and deepen the recent exciting literature on animism to form a new analytical perspective on these cults across mainland Southeast Asia. This is not simply a collection of exemplary ethnographies, but a deeply comparative volume that develops its ideas through a meshwork of regional entanglements, parallels and differences, before entering into a dialogue with debates on power, mastery and the social theory of animism globally.

As the ritual thanking of traditional guardians of a place is becoming more common in many societies, the lessons of the stone masters of mainland Southeast Asia make compelling reading, and open up new perspectives on religion, and ideas of territoriality and belonging.

Artists and the People: Ideologies of Art in Indonesia Exploring the work of established and emerging artists in Indonesia’s vibrant art world, this book examines why so many artists in the world’s largest archipelagic nation choose to work directly with people and in the studio. While the social dimension of Indonesian art makes it distinctive in the globalised world of contemporary art, Elly Kent explores this engagement in Indonesian terms. What are the historical, political and social conditions that lie beneath these polyvalent practices? How do formal and informal institutions, communities and artist-runinitiatives contribute to the practices and discourses behind socially-engaged art in Indonesia? Reconstructing God: Style, Hydraulics, Political Power and Angkor’s West Mebon Viṣṇu In December 1936, a villager was led by a dream to the ruins of the West Mebon shrine in Angkor where he found the remains of a bronze sculpture. This was the West Mebon Viṣṇu, the largest bronze remaining from pre-modern Southeast Asia, and a work of great artistic, historical and political significance.

Prominently placed in an island-temple in the middle of the vast artificial reservoir, the West Mebon Viṣṇu sculpture was a key focus point of the Angkorian hydraulic network. Interpretations of the statue, its setting, date and role, have remained largely unchanged since the 1960s, until now. Integrating the latest archaeological and historical work on Angkor, extensive art historical analysis of the figure of Viṣṇu Anantaśāyin in Hindu-Buddhist art across the region, and a detailed digital reconstruction of the sculpture and its setting, Marnie Feneley brings new light to this important piece.

This new understanding of the West Mebon Viṣṇu sculpture reorients our understanding of religious and political change in Angkor in the 12th century. The book will be of interest to art historians and curators, historians of Southeast Asia, and anyone with an interest in the art and history of Angkor.

The Strange Start of Psychology at the National University of Singapore The psychology programme at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is today highly popular with students, while the general public in Singapore has begun to appreciate what psychology has to offer as a hub discipline that straddles many fields. Things, however, were not always as such, nor was the development of the programme smooth sailing.

This book traces the journey of NUS Psychology—how it started in 1986 as a programme in the Department of Social Work (subsequently renamed as the Department of Social Work and Psychology) before becoming an independent Department of Psychology in 2005. Set within a historical context of prevailing sentiments and challenges of the times, this account of the journey illustrates how the start of NUS Psychology was in many ways a strange one. Golden nuggets of information and insights, as well as useful lessons that can be learned from this strange start, are provided by an author who walked this entire journey.

John Michael Elliott joined NUS Psychology in 1986 as a Senior Teaching Fellow and retired in 2018 as an Associate Professor. He was awarded the Public Service Medal (PBM – Pingat Bakti Masyarakat) in 2007.

Sim Tick Ngee was part of the pioneer cohort of psychology students in 1986. He joined the Department as a teaching assistant on graduation and remains with the Department to this day.

A History of the People’s Action Party, 1985–2021 The People’s Action Party (or PAP) of Singapore is among the longest-ruling democratically-elected political parties in the world, in power continuously since Singapore gained self-rule in 1959. Such longevity is the hallmark of an institution that is itself dynamic and responsive. But remarkably, the story of the party as an institution has not received the sustained study it deserves, from historians or political scientists.

This narrative history of the PAP follows the decisions made by party leaders as they have sought to respond to the changing demands and expectations of the Singapore electorate, over a 36-year period that saw Singapore enter the ranks of developed nations. It is fully up to date with the Party’s response to their loss of seats in the 2020 General Elections, and changes in party leadership succession announced in April 2021. Leadership renewal is one of four dimensions of change in the party that are the book’s focus: the others being the party’s communications methods and styles, the mechanisms developed for managing institutional change, and the evolution of economic and social policy.

Drawing on internal party documents and multiple interviews with key leaders over a 10-year period, this work provides a detailed portrait of a robust political institution and establishes a distinctive new narrative of Singapore politics.

Not for Circulation: The George E. Bogaars Story Do civil servants really make a difference? Can they shape history? When John Drysdale published one of the first books to put together the political history of independent Singapore, in 1985, George E. Bogaars wrote to his daughter with typical understatement, “I feature in it a bit.”

Bogaars headed the Special Branch at the time of Operation Coldstore. He reported directly to pioneer leaders such as Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Keng Swee, before they became political icons. He started the Singapore Armed Forces from scratch, when he was Permanent Secretary of Interior and Defence (the precursor of Home Affairs and Defence ministries). He was the head of the Civil Service, involved in a dozen or so Government-linked companies attempting to shore up the country’s infrastructure and expand its business portfolio. He held the country’s purse strings when he moved into the Finance ministry before his retirement on 31 October 1981 at age 55. His impressive resume belies a colourful, flamboyant character with a wicked sense of humour.

Wayward Distractions: Ornament, Emotion, Zombies and the Study of Buddhism in Thailand When more than 93 per cent of the citizens of one country profess a single religion, as Thais do Buddhism, and when that religion is deeply integrated into national institutions and ideologies, it becomes tempting to think of the religion as a textual, institutional, cultural and conceptual whole. But at the same time it is obvious that expressions of Buddhism in Thailand reflect anything but a single order: they are often gaudy, cacophonous, variegated, and jumbled: almost technicolor. Diversity and contradiction are everywhere. A more open engagement with Buddhism in Thailand will require a willingness to be distracted, to step away from received hierarchies and follow the intriguing detail in the ornate design, the odd textual reference, to prefer “thin description” over a search for meaning.

Collected together for the first time, and set in place by a compelling introduction that argues for a strongly materialist approach, these essays cover subjects ranging from ornamental art to marriage and emotion, the role of Hinduism, neglected gender and ethnic diversity, Buddhist inflections in contemporary art practice, and the boundaries between the living, the dead and the undead. Southeast Asian Site Reports epress.nus.edu.sg/sitereports The Southeast Asian Site Reports series is intended to make archaeological data available for comparative study to all scholars who work on Southeast Asian archaeology, as well as the active community of students of archaeology and volunteers in the region.

Aside from descriptions of the archaeological project, these reports generally include: • • • • •

research questions addressed by the project, and analysis of results site maps and stratigraphic drawings tables providing quantitative data and statistics on specific types of artifacts illustrations of the main types of artifacts discovered (photographs and drawings) laboratory analyses of mineral composition, identification of organic materials, the ancient environment, dating methods and results

This information is typically difficult to obtain for Southeast Asian sites, especially for the historical period. It is hoped that these efforts to develop an online publication template, and tools for the management of images and other data, will encourage more sharing of data across national boundaries.

Southeast of Now: Directions in Contemporary and Modern Art in Asia Established by a collective of scholars and curators with the aim of looking and listening closely to the discursive spaces of art in, from, and around the region we refer to as Southeast Asia, from an historical perspective. The journal presents a necessarily diverse range of perspectives not only on the contemporary and modern art of Southeast Asia, but indeed of the region itself: its borders, its identity, its efficacy, and its limitations as a geographical marker and a conceptual category. As such, the journal is defined by a commitment to the need for and importance of rigorous discussion, of the contemporary and modern art of the domain that lies south of China, east of India, and north of Australia. The journal publishes twice a year (March and October).

China: An International Journal (CIJ) An internationally refereed journal published for the East Asian Institute, NUS in February, May, August and November

by NUS Press. Based outside China, America and Europe, CIJ aims to present diverse international perceptions and frames of reference on contemporary China, including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. The journal invites the submission of cuttingedge research articles, review articles and policy comments and research notes in the fields of politics, economics, society, geography, law, culture and international relations. The unique final section of this journal offers a chronology and listing of key documents pertaining to developments in relations between China and the 10 ASEAN member-states.

Information for Authors NUS Press (formerly Singapore University Press) originated as the publishing arm of the University of Malaya in Singapore, and between 1954 and 1971 published books under the University of Malaya Press imprint. The Singapore University Press imprint first appeared in 1971.

In 2006 Singapore University Press was succeeded by a new NUS Press to reflect the name of its parent institution and to align the Press closer to the university’s overall branding.
