CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 INTRODUCTION Industrial Training is a partial requirement for students in certain courses or programs at all levels of higher education in the Institute of Higher Education (IPT). To increase the level of workability of graduates, the Industrial Training program was introduced to strengthen the necessary competencies. The program provides students the learning opportunities in the working industry to receive practical experience so they can improve their marketability. The Industrial Training program provides exposure and real-time experience to student in terms of technological development, effective communication, teamwork practices, policing, procedures and regulation, professional perspectives and reporting. In addition, this program will build a proactive spirit among students and boost their confidence in becoming a brilliant trainee.

1

1.2 OBJECTIVES OF INDUSTRIAL TRAINING AND REPORT In general, the objectives of the training can be listed as below a. To expose students to the actual working environment. b. To give students opportunities to apply the theoretical knowledge to the actual tasks in the challenging environment. c. To provide opportunities to organizations and government sectors to transfer the relevant knowledge, skills and experience to the students. d. To equip students to become part of the skilful professional workforce in the future. e. To develop intellectual growth and emotional maturity of the students. f. To create and enhance a close relationship between the university and the respective organizations for the benefits of both parties. Meanwhile, students that went through industrial training are required to do weekly reports for their daily work as well as a monthly attendance sheet to mark their attendance. Student are required to produce an Industrial report based on the work that was done during the whole of the 13-week Industrial Training program. The objectives of these reports are as follow: a. Produce a report on how an architect's or landscape architect’s or construction industry related office is organized and operates b. Produce a logbook recording their experience in performing or completing given tasks c. Perform as a staff and a team member in dealing with others in the industry

2

1.3 IMPORTANCE OF INDUSTRIAL TRAINING AND REPORT Because of that, the Industrial Training provides students to have a better understanding in a working environment. Theory and practice are two things that are of same importance to be practiced. Students will be able to think outside the box when theory is different than practice. In other words, what we learn are not the same as what we experience within the working industry. The importance of industrial training is as follows: a. Students can be in a real working environment and get more experience. b. Students are trained to follow the rules set by the party company. c. Students will learn about the problems that need to be faced and they will find a way to solve the problem. d. Students can also gain more experience about studies who are interested and make themselves better in that field. e. Students can make themselves more comfortable to socialize with people when they tend to associate with company employees.

CHAPTER 3 OVERVIEW OF INDUSTRIAL TRAINING 3.1 INTRODUCTION During my 13 weeks of training from 2nd November 2020 to 29th January 2021, variety of jobs are provided by MFA Empire however my main tasks was to assist Mr Muhaimin and briefly Mr Izzat in their job scope which includes technical drawings and site reports. 3.2 SUMMARY OF THE JOB FUNCTIONS/TASKS BY COMPANY Due to the PKP and recent MCO, there were several restrictions as I was only an intern and was thus placed in office work. Each assignment that was tasked must follow the procedure and process that has been set by the company and it is implemented in a systematic procedure. Task 1: Provide technical drawings for submission This was my main task during the whole of my internship. As the company provides as One-Stop Centre, a majority of the time relates to the collaboration between the client, the company, the architect and the site, be it workers or various additions. During the training period, the task varies to every different projects. Most of them varies from Residential Renovation, New Bungalow construction, Office renovations, Commercial renovations and even Factory renovations. Each drawing done would then be checked by the Head of Technical Department, Mr Muhaimin and the Assistant Architect, Mr Anas, if there is any error, it will be amended and checked again until satisfied. After all is done it will be fitted and composed into a title block intended for stamp of approval by either MBSA, DBKL, or other city council based on the location of each project.

10

After then it would be sent to the Architect (Mr. Khairul Munauwir) for any changes or technical errors or design flaws which would be amended and the process repeats until the architect is satisfied and given his approval. At other times, it would be sent to the client to their design satisfaction or amend any changes to their demand then only sent to the Architect for checking. Examples of such projects will be provided in Appendix. Task 2: Provide Site Report for a project Though only briefly during my first few weeks of the training, I was tasked in providing a site report on a home renovation progress. The report shows the progress of construction done. The details however I had to asked the staff who went to the site, which was Ms. Irdina, about the area of rooms and the details. Mr. Izzat then guided me with the formatting and any details that was missing or lacking.

Figure 3.2.1: Sample of Mr. Lim Site Report

11

Task 3: Liaises with Staff for Reference Throughout my training, communication is key as I have to be verbal and more communicative to learn more or gather more info on the project which they have been to site or more knowledgeable than me. Nearing the end of the training, I have liaised and discuss with some of the staffs in the firm for any information related to reports like Organizational Structure and company background. Also, asking for permission from the Chief Executive Officer for the information that will be used for report purpose. Task 4: Review Reviewing is a process of checking and correcting the draft of drawing or template. In the last month of my training, I have also been given the honour in reviewing the newer intern’s work and amending some to correct technical details and leading a project from the basic drawing to be passed onto the submission department. Task 5: Indirect duties Clerical works which are indirect such as printing, office cleaning duty when I was on during training.

12

CHAPTER 4 PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AND PROBLEM-SOLVING APPROACHES 4.1 PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AND APPROACH ADOPTED FOR SOLVING PROBLEM During the whole of the training, I did not experience much problems however there were some difficulties that I had to face. In some cases there were some miscommunication, technical errors, or even some difference in design than what the client intended. Mostly the problems occurred was when constructing the technical drawings and mostly it was the roof construction. 4.2.1 INTERNET CONNECTION AND SOFTWARE PROBLEM As the company rely on WhatsApp and emails and even calls to communicate with the architect, suppliers and the president clients, etc, internet connection is crucial to this. However, there were some instances where the internet connection was cut off for no reason or buffering or even system failure which ended up lost of progress in AutoCAD that wasn’t saved by the autosave function. This faulty connection can cause delay of any project if it happened too frequently. Though I myself am unable to do anything about it, I would suggest installing a substitute offline system just as a backup should there be a software failure in long term. Currently, the boss Mr Khairi, is finding and planning a cloud software in substitute of the current software problem for the company. Another suggestion is to add the new softwares or files onto a backup computer just in case the files are taking too much space in the computer.

13

4.2.2 INSUFFIECINT WORKFORCE Due to the small number of staffs, I sometimes had to work efficiently just to manage the time, helping the staff who had to work overtime just to catchup with a project from longer delay. Currently with MCO in Malaysia, job employment is a little more difficult than the usual hiring. However, the company can hire part-time or freelance workers. Interns too have been an especial help in workforce as I have observed. 4.2.3 INSUFFICIENT COMPUTERS During the training, there were no computer in the office for me to use and as such I had to rely entirely on my own laptop to work. Unfortunately, there were some instances where my laptop cannot support long time use throughout the day causing me to be unable to complete my work faster and sometimes even redo something when it crashes. Physically unable to do much as it was a software problem and unless I’m a technician I cant do much. My solution was to upload every CAD file once it was completed into the company’s group in case of lost files which had happened before. I think MFA Empire should provide computers specifically for interns for more convenience.

14

CHAPTER 5 DETAILS OF EXPERIENCES 5.1 SUMMARY OF THE EXPERIENCES GAINED Throughout the training, all activities that have been done throughout the session weeks industrial training at MFA Empire Sdn Bhd has been recorded and all assignments done was able to increase the knowledge and help students to handle a task well in the real working world later. A few of those experiences are listed below:5.1.1 KNOWLEDGE OF COMPUTER SOFTWARES The computer is the most important electronic device in the company which uses a more high-end power consuming software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Lumion and so on to preform tasks such as technical drawings, 3D drawings, 3D perspective views, which is increasingly emphasized by MFA Empire Sdn. Bhd in the marketing field to attract clients. With the advent of this computerized system, working drawings are not only possible to be produced in a short time, any corrections, revisions and changes can be made directly on existing work drawings without affect the neatness of the original working drawings. It is very important to prepare neat and orderly working drawings and presentation drawings in the field of architecture today. In addition to being able to produce work drawings and presentation drawings, the use of computers plays an important role in relationships between the architect and the consultant. It is used to send work drawings via email and can save time. The softwares used during the industrial training at MFA Empire Sdn Bhd. are AutoCAD software, SketchUp software and Google Drive and the knowledge gained from it. This software is essentially intended for creating work drawings and related

15

marketing of the built environment. This is because with the use of AutoCAD software, the task of making a working drawing can be produced accurately and saves time. 5.1.1.1 AUTOCAD AutoCAD is a program commonly used for this purpose specific in describing and planning with the help of a computer inside model formation as well as measurements for two and three dimensions or better known as “Computer-aided drafting and design program” (CAD). This program can be used in all areas of work especially in areas of need specialized skills such as Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Graphics and all areas related to the use of AutoCAD. In addition, AutoCAD is one of the drawing designs programs with the help of a fairly sophisticated computer. Slowly but surely. AutoCAD experienced image automation, replacing the manual functions that have dominated the work in all fields. Though already familiar with this software throughout the educational years of degree, I have learnt more commands and other formats for working drawings or submission layout that haven’t been taught in classes. This has equipped me to be more technologically savvy and able to detect the details of drawing than before. 5.1.1.2 SKETCHUP AND LUMION SketchUp is a 3D modelling software that can be used for interpreting architecture, animation and 3D printing. Though only through observations, I learnt that SketchUp has been used for both visualisation of working drawings and to learn the comparability of materials types and colour through visual pleasing renderings such as V-ray and Lumion. SketchUp and Lumion are both used in a live-sync extension for ever changing improvement and rendered with V-ray when the final result is satisfied by the boss. This software is mainly used by the Design Department throughout the design process.

16

5.1.2 COMMUNICATION SKILL AND LISTENING SKILL In the working environment, communication skills are essential to help individuals to conduct their task in an efficient manner. Within my years of studies I have been an introvert with quiet manner and stayed silent to avoid conflict. However, during the training, communication plays a key role when needing the measurements or any information that only can be obtained on site which I have never been. Also, when there were any corrections, be it from the city council officers through a member of the Submission Department, the Architect or any technical errors or any projects to be passed on from others, communication is used so that what is clear to do and remove when doing a working drawing. Furthermore, during the working days I have observed that the staffs will not only communicate with their colleague verbally but also with suppliers, the client, engineers and any other involved through not only meeting in person but also through WhatsApp, each project has their own group with its members involved. Not only that, the listening skill is just as important as communication as it helps to understand instructions given or any amendments or changes in design better. 5.1.3 BASIC TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE Though MFA Empire is a small consultancy firm, it cannot be denied that it’s knowledges are vast in technical details. Throughout the training, I have learnt many technical knowledge in not only in AutoCAD but also in real life construction details such as roof material types and its angles, BOMBA specifications, how to read the Sales and Agreement Contract to find the information needed for submission template and schedules such as ventilation schedules and MBPJ’s Interior partition wall count. Also, I have learnt on the different types Title Blocks for each city council and their requirements for submission and for each drawing, each have their own code in the Title Block. Not only that, my experiences have expanded as every project I have been exposed to has been varied to renovations to new build, as such I have been able to be glimpse to

17

working’s of not only submission drawings but also R.C drawings that was to be given to engineers and also 3D presentation templates from the Design Departments as well as the forms and stamps needed for approval such as Borang F from LAM. 5.1.4 TIME MANAGEMENT In MFA Empire, though the amount of staff is small their dedication and work efficiency is key to what allowed the company to have many projects. During my time there, the staffs was able to manage multiple projects at a time which is a feat at itself. Though with a slow start, I slowly learnt to managed myself to work efficiently within the working hours of the company and it is efficient that each project is done swiftly and accurately as possible to avoid delay.

18

CHAPTER 6 CONCLUSION A thousand gratitude to MFA Empire for allowing me the opportunity to undergo my industrial training at this company. With this golden opportunity, I hoped I have done with full diligence, trust and responsibility. I am grateful that I was able to improve my skills with the help and guidance that was given to me. Mainly, I have succeeded in improving my skills in using AutoCAD software in ways I have not learnt during class. Through this industrial training, I was able to cultivate the spirit of cooperation, comradeships and also improving my social skills as well as communicate between company staff. I am very proud to be able to join this company as an industrial training student as well as to have the opportunity to be a colleague with a professional and much more experienced staff. This was a golden opportunity for me to gain as much knowledge as possible with their help. Every new things I have learnt have been kept as a personal note to myself for the future. At least, I was able to complete this training filled with knowledge in me and not in vain of not acquiring something throughout the training. In conclusion, the industrial training are very important for every student because they are useful to be applied in the working environment later on. With early exposure during the industrial training, students can improve their skills, knowledge and even selfconfidence to perform a task and so on. With this, IUKL is able to produce quality graduate with trustworthy and responsible characteristics. As well as being able to indirectly improve performance and change netizens’ views on IUKL.
