INTRODUCTION

IN THIS FINAL DESIGN FOR DIPLOMA, WE WERE REQUIRED TO DO TWO PROJECTS THAT ARE RELATED WITH EACH OTHER . IN THIS DESIGN WE WERE REQUIURED TO DO A LIFEGUARD TOWER AND A LIFEGUARD TRAINING CENTRE IN PASIR BOGAK BEACH, PANGKOR ISLAND, PERAK.

IN THE FIRST PROJECT, LIFEGUARD TOWER, WE WERE REQUIRED TO BUILD FOR A LIFEGUA RD TO OVERSEE THE BEACH WITH A minimum 4 meter above ground level with a 360o covered observation deck. Area of the observation deck is 2m by 2m. An intermediate observatio n deck and a fast means of descend should be included if the tower is more than 4 me ter above ground level. this project is linked to the second project in this subject, we were encouraged to carry the concept/ metaphor/ idea used in this project to the ne xt project .

The concept of the project is the shape and pattern of the clam shell. it follows the curve surface of a clam shell and it is created to be as similar to an open clam shell as possible. It was abstracted from two sets of clam shell that was held toget her and the hinge that connects the two halves together also interpreted with the main jointing of the whole tower. The materials used in the project was steel i -beams, treated timber, metal decking, and glass.

FOR THE SECOND PROJECT, THE LIFEGUARD TRAINING C ENTRE, IN COLLABORATION WITH BUILDING CONSTRUCION III, WAS DESIGNED FOR THE EASE OF THE INTERMEDIATE POINT FOR THE VICTIMS TO BE SENT TO THE HOSPITAL AND A PLACE WHERE LIFEGUARDS ARE TRAINED. THE SITE WAS SELECTED NEAR THE ENTRANCE OF SEA VIEW RESORT AND H AS A RETAINING WALL IN IT. WE WERE ASK TO DESIGN A LIFEGUARD TRAINING CENTRE IN A LONG AND NARROW SITE WHICH ITSELF IS A DIFFICULT SITE INCLUDING THE RETAINING WALL THAT EXTENDS ALMOST HALFWAY IN THE SITE .

FOR THE PROJECT REQUIREMENT, WE WERE REQUESTED T O INTERGERATED The use of different types of functional spaces such as public, private, semi public/ private , Design elements that responds to the environment and could help in energy conservation for example use of renewable energy source that are readily available on site , Suitable construction materials to be used and services (lighting, water supply, drainage etc.) required in the proposed building AND Cultural context eg. the local architectural style and customs .

THE CONCEPT WAS CARRY ON FROM PROJECT 1, THE SHAPE AND PATTERN OF CLAM SHELL, AND SO WAS THE MATERIALS. IT WAS ALSO ABSTRACTED FROM THE CURVE OF THE CLAM SHELL TO CREATE THE ROOF AND IT ALSO USES THE CUEVE AS A BASE TO CREATE THE FLOOR PLANS , MAKING IT SIMILAR TO A CLAM SHELL ’S CURVE. WHILE S IMILAR TO A HINGE OF THE CLAM SHELL, THE ARCH STRUCTURE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BUILDING ACTS AS A CONNECTOR FOR THE TWO SEPERATED BUILDING TO BECOME AS ONE.
