Get Ready for the Worldvision! Rotterdam is ready to host the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest from May 12th to May 16th, representing 116 member organizations in 56 countries and an additional 34 Associates in Asia, Africa, Australia and America. The slogan of this year is “Open Up” and it celebrates the differences between countries, people, and experiences. It reproduces the narrative of the Netherlands as an open and progressive country. This inspired KNUS, in particular the MuThCo (Music Theatre Committee) and the DEC (DutchEnglish Committee) to create an event which can connect all the students by putting internationalization as its primary goal. That’s why on Thursday, May 14th, 2020 the Worldvision will take place. Every participant will represent their country, by exhibiting with a song or a performance. The jury will be composed of the board and other MuThCo members and there will be amazing prizes! It will be the best occasion to perform in our language and show a small part of our cultures to our fellow students. As the years pass, ACS is attracting more and more students from all around the globe and there is a growing need for internationalization. With the Worldvision, we will give a space where international students can feel comfortable to share their music culture with their fellows and, who knows, maybe create a connection between different countries and music traditions. As a member of the MuThCo myself, I’m really looking forward to seeing how this experiment works out. It is the first collaboration with the DEC and it is definitely the event of the year for us. Between Eurovision-like jokes and gags, we hope to design an event that could shape a network between culture through music, in order to let every single student open up to the world that surrounds them. News will come soon! Stay tuned! • Daniela Piangiolino

1920 vs. 2020 The new year has just started and everyone is in turmoil because of the new decade; not a simple decade, we are in the ‘20s! The internet has been ready for this for a long time and it’s most likely that you’ve seen Leonardo Di Caprio’s Gatsby’s gif a million times already, old sport. Will this decade be like the loved “roaring ‘20s”? It’s been a century: society changed, with its people and its needs, but much of the dynamics seem to be the same. Let’s explore them together! • Daniela Piangiolino
First of all, there are three main parallelisms that can be drawn in the two centuries: • The 1920s saw a restriction on the use of alcohol that turned into a strict prohibition, comprehending also drugs, which gave rise to bootleggers and gangsters; new places such as jazz clubs and speakeasies were opened in order to offer illegally produced and distributed alcohol. After 100 years, some countries are legalizing cannabis and people are ready to recognize its benefit in some medical treatments. • Henry Ford’s mass production of automobiles began in the ‘20s, leading to a considerable shift into society; lifestyles were changing, and people would use the car to move to and within the city. Ford’s Model T evolved until the 2019 Tesla Autonomous Car! What does technology have in store for us? • Silent movies had a boom in the ‘20s, and Charlie Chaplin became a real icon of the era. A century later, we assist to the incredible use of VR – virtual reality – in films and video game, creating a new simulated reality which is not recognizable from the ‘real’ one (this is a call for all the Cultural Studies fellas).
6
However, the new decade is shaping itself on a sociopolitical context that is framed in an impending economic devastation. As past generations witnessed the Crash of 1929, the Dust Bowl, and the Great Depression, contemporary market is subjected to continuous highs and lows, and the middle-class is jeopardized by this financial pressure. Moreover, the progressing technological innovations allowed the development of a cyberwarfare and online terrorism, which favored the reemergence of fundamentalist ideologies and movements, such as the KKK (Ku Klux Klan). Nativism and racism have not disappeared in the past century, as well as the tendency of societies to fall into totalitarian dynamics. Furthermore, pollution and climate change are raging, and they are central in daily discourses, as well as Feminism and LGTBQ+ rights. On the other hand, people are reacting to these flows with social and cultural movements. As the 1920s were the fulcrum of the Avant-Garde movements, the 2020s seem to be a time were art and culture will acquire more freedom. Internet is a platform to express and exchange ideas in the form of blogs, videos, illustrations, literature, and so on. The 1920s were not a decade of non-stop party and fun, particularly for those who weren’t young, rich, and white. The 2020s won’t be either. But the similarities between the two centuries can push us to look back and try to walk into this new decade with ideas on how to improve our lifestyle, our culture, our society, our world. Let’s make this decade memorable for those who will look at us in 100 years!
Not Galerie Lafayette but still beautiful... A Short Story (Continuation) by Charly Hermanns
He was walking through the cold town, in search of Maeve, again.. How dare she disappear again after that terrible incident she just had. “Don’t let this stupid girl be on rooftops again,” he thought when being troubled with worry. What if she was? Would he be able to stay calm or burst out again just as he did the last time when he found out she was up again. Sure, it was her safe place, but that was not necessary anymore, or was it? His family has given her shelter to get away from the terrible circumstances they all had left behind. His heart still ached when thinking about all she has gone through. The night began to get colder and colder. Snow was in the air and so was trouble. If she was on a roof, the cold could be very dangerous. She could slip again and what would happen then…? He would never forgive himself for letting her storm out again. He saw her face appear in his mind. She was so scared and anxious. Everything was trouble with this girl. But why? The biggest wish he had and, certainly, she had as well, was that one day all things could be normal. But this was not the time to worry about the past. He must find her before the night fell over the city and the snow began to fall. He has seen the weather forecast. His joy was up to maximum when he heard the meteorologist announce the white pleasure. White Christmas was on its way! Finally some good news! Only if she had not left the house. He was frightened to be sent back in time and find her lying on the street… He knew that she had to have her freedom, but not now. “Please Maeve,” he begged, “come back to me!” As if someone heard his prayers, her face appeared in the crowds, smiling when she recognized him. Her feet carried her as quickly as possible through the people and she threw her arms around him. “Stop this frowning, Ran! You will be all wrinkly by 30 if you don’t stop worrying about me,” she said laughing. “I will always come back to you, Ran.” “But...” She interrupted him with a hand gesture which always managed to shush everyone down. His face still showed a slightly worried expression. “Shit,” she thought, “he knows I was up there again.” Trying to distract him, she grabbed his hand and pulled him to the beautiful window display of the most expensive warehouse in town. She dreamt of setting foot in this beauty that still remained of the old days, when the prosperity of the working class had risen and department stores popped up all over the place. It was not Galerie Lafayette but it was still beautiful. While she let her gaze run up and down the façade, her mind, and most certainly her heart, formed a dream: to set foot in the store and not be thrown out! Whatever it might cost. Maybe she could apply for a job as shop assistant! Wouldn’t that be marvellous? Finishing her thought, her gaze wandered to Ran. They were still holding hands. He was fascinated by the Christmas display made for the children. His eyes sparked with joy when he watched the stuffed animals moving and doing whatever they were bound to do. And just as she watched him, her heart skipped a beat….

The Big Bois of RU: Thomas van Aquino by Gwen Tummers
8
Before I started studying at this university I had no idea who Radboud was, let alone all the other people whose names are used in this university. Neither did the students I asked. That’s why I decided to look up information about them. I found out that most, if not all of them, were either scientists or important people for the catholic church. The first person who I will talk about is Thomas van Aquino. He belongs to the latter group. Thomas van Aquino lived around the year 1250 in the Middle Ages. He was an Italian philosopher and theologist. He is known to be the most influential systematic thinker of his time. Van Aquino had a very rough youth. He felt like he belonged to the Dominican church but his family wanted him to join the Benedictine church, for which his brothers locked him up in a castle. When Aquino was free again, he decided to follow his heart anyway. He wrote multiple books on his ideas of religion. His most influential ideas are in his book Summa Theologiae. The best known example of them is that there has to be a reason for change. In Van Aquino’s eyes this could only be God. Another idea, which does not necessarily have to be religion-related, is that a cause is needed for every series of action. Later, in the 20th century, but also before that, many people discussed his ideas. He became associated with neotheism, which was not liked by everybody. I think that it is interesting to name a building after somebody who is seen as right by some people, but wrong by others. On the other hand, maybe he should only be understood from a medieval perspective. At the time, according to Dante, he would belong in paradise.

How To Prepare for the New Year? 2020 New Year is almost here! In South Korea, all our families prepare to listen to the sound of the bell in Bo-sin-gak on New Year. The meaning of this is to wish peace for the family in the next year. Likewise, each country prepares to celebrate the New Year in their own way. We will see now how each country celebrates New Year and what interesting superstitions for the New Year they have. • Minsun Kang The Netherlands
At the beginning of the New Year, Dutch people participate in a New Year’s Dive to celebrate. While they jump into the sea or a lake, they wash the bad memories off from the previous year and start the new one. Moreover, they eat Oliebollen, which is fried bread with raisins, apples, and other ingredients. They believe that negative energy can’t affect them because of the oil from the bread, thus, they can avoid the bad luck in the coming year.
Mexico
The clock tower bell rings twelve times at midnight on New Year’s Eve and, at the same time, Mexican people eat twelve grapes one by one and make twelve wishes. These twelve grapes represent the twelve months in the year. They manifest what they want for each month in advance.
Germany
German people call the 31st of December Silvester. On that day, families watch a black-and-white film together and do a custom called Bleigießen (“lead pouring”), which
shows predictions for the upcoming year depending on the different results.
Brazil
In Brazil, people believe that the colour of the underwear they wear during the night before New Year’s Eve determines the fortune of the coming New Year. Therefore, they wear underwear with the colours they believe will manifest the things they want. Red means passion, pink means love, white means peace, green means good luck and yellow means money.
France
New Year’s superstitions in France are connected to alcohol. Until the New Year’s Eve, if you have any alcohol left in your home, it can bring bad luck. For this reason, the family gathers at the end of the year and drink alcohol together. On New Year’s Eve, they hug and say hello to the New Year and each other, wishing for a long life.

2010s recap
by Adil Boughlala
With the arrival of 2020, we’re ending a decade and starting a new one! The 2010-decade is the one most of us grew up in, had our puberty in and started our studies in. So let’s take a look at some of the major things that this decade has given us! Black lives matter Formed more than 6 years ago, the Black Lives Matter movement stands up against racism and violence towards black communities, by protesting both on the street as on social media. #MeToo movement After American actress Alyssa Milano wrote a tweet asking all sexually assaulted women to let their voices be heard, the #MeToo movement blew up and formed a pedestal for many people. The growing toleration of LGBTQ+ Up till 2009, only seven countries in the whole world had legalised same-sex marriage. In 2019, this number has been more than tripled! The LGBTQ+ community has gradually started gaining attention in this decade as well, with bigger and more Pride parades every year. Memes Memes existed before this decade, but got really popular in the 2010s. This decade introduced the world to “dank” memes as a coping mechanism to everything that’s happening on the internet and in real life. Political disruption Both a blessing and a curse; in this decade, countries have started to liberate themselves from corrupt and intolerant regimes. Sadly, this decade has also seen a rise in populism (looking at you, Trump) and political terror. It is obviously impossible to summarise this decade in just one page, so here are some worthy mentions: Pokémon Go, Gangnam Style, the world ending in 2012, royal weddings, diverse emojis, Leonardo di Caprio finally wins an Oscar, Game of Thrones, attention to global warming, Banksy shredding his art, Brexit, first photo of a black hole, Netflix, influencers, virtual reality gaming, Notre Dame, selfie.
Reminiscence on Your Childhood and Teenage Years
With 2020 arriving, the ending to our youth has officially come. From the 00s up until the 20s was the period when the majority of us really grew up. Growing up comes with a nostalgia for the past, and there is no better way to feed into it than watching some of the television shows (yes, no Netflix needed!) we used to watch when we were younger. • Shanna de Caluwé
iCarly
This is a television show that undoubtedly all of us have watched before. It tells the story of three teenagers who become an internet hit by accident. It all starts when Carly and her best friend Sam ask for the help the boy next door called Freddie, to record auditions for a talent show. Freddie, however, uploads the wrong files onto the internet, in which Carly and Sam are joking about their teachers. They instantly become a hit and that is how the iCarly web show is born!
Big Time Rush
What can I say about Big Time Rush? The best boy band before One Direction (and later 5 Seconds of Summer, of course) even existed. All of these bands hold a special place in my heart, but Big Time Rush truly is where it all started. The show tells the story of four ice hockey players who suddenly get flown out to LA, where a producer wants to make them the next big boy band.
Victorious
The next show certainly cannot be left out on this list. When I used to watch this, I wanted nothing more than to go to a school like the one in this show (is that why I ended up in Arts & Culture Studies?). Victorious follows a girl named Tori Vega, who goes to Hollywood Arts High School, where she has a diverse group of friends who all have their own quirky personalities.

This Is Actually Happening
Hong Kong: Safe but Separate
The news is a sea of black cotton and nylon mixed with the red of fire, blood, and lights. The protests are alive in Hong Kong. But in the apartment it is quiet. Most Hongkongers who I have asked about the protests say that they were forbidden by their parents to leave the house during the largerscale planned protests, and that the fear resided in calling their friends to ensure their safety and absence of arrests. Some even had to call their friends’ parents to make sure they get legal help and the correct amount of bail for the ones who were less lucky. Some shrugged and were light-hearted. “Vandalism,” they sighed, pointing at the campuses and malls that are closed down for rebuilding. Some were simply annoyed at the inconvenience of closed MTRs, Hong Kong’s metro system. While some, under their breath, whispered about cases of dead bodies surfacing in random places and missing persons after the protests.
Major media outlets seem to only show flickering images littered with tear gas smoke, Molotov cocktails, and the rape allegations made against the antiprotest police. Even though there
12
seems to be a new hope as university students resume their semester after a city-wide shut down, the question “why would you come to Hong Kong during such a turbulent time?” is still constantly asked by locals themselves. According to foreign secondary school students, it seems the biggest worry is having your local train station getting closed. “Public transportation affects the people who need to get to school and work,” a student said. “Although, sometimes I feel unsafe when I leave my house but that’s just because I was once almost caught in the middle of a protest. All I had to do was get back in the train and make sure I left the scene as quickly as possible.”
Another student added that their friend did get stuck in one. “The protesters actually guard them from the police and also gave them masks to protect themselves from the teargas,” they said. Many of the young people seem to be sympathetic towards the protesters, whilst the adults look to be suffering the consequences of political unrest. Due to the lack of general economic activity, many sectors have cut down on staff so as to minimise losses. Most adult foreigners seem to be nervous about their jobs, and many know at least a handful of people who have been
fired or will be fired due to this lack of demand, especially since less and less people seem to be entering the country. At the same time, if people were made aware that Hong Kong is still a perfectly safe place to live in and economic activity rises again, it might take away from the protesters’ power as it implies their efforts cause no effects. The question, of course, arises: should the rest of the world get involved? One of the students who were interviewed says that “[they] wished other countries knew what the protests are fighting for.” Especially since Hong Kong is a former British colony, shouldn’t Britain have a sense of responsibility? Shouldn’t all powerful, developed countries have a sense of responsibility? Is it just a large-scale version of White Saviourism? At the same time, it is evident that the people of Hong Kong still suffers under neo- and postcolonialism, whether explicitly or otherwise—as this is the case for many former colonies. What do the “Superior” Westerners, whom they look up to in a way, whether they are aware of or agree with it? Thus, countries such as Britain speaking up could sway the government’s perspective. Is it better to have done nothing and be wrong or do something and be wrong?
D D N R A U D T G A R R T U A R GSS? A Symposium 2020
?
The symposium committee is very excited to finally announce this year’s theme about two very different matters which have been connected since before recorded history: Drugs & Art… or are they? This year we are going to look closer at the relation between drugs and art in many different aspects from the past until present. The event will be hosted on the 14th of April in the Eleonor Ostrombuilding (EOS) in theatre hall C. We have prepared a program for the whole afternoon with 3 speakers from different cultural and artistic backgrounds. They are going to talk about this year’s theme in the best way possible. The symposium will consist of two interesting and academic lectures, a very exciting interview and of course a break. There will also be time for questions and a chance for us to challenge the lecturers in an open discussion. The symposium is obligatory for first year students, but don’t be shy to take your friends, boyfriend, girlfriend or roommate because everyone is welcome! You may have noticed that no names or practicalities are mentioned yet. Well, if you are interested and you want to know more about the program, please DO check our Facebook page and event! We will announce more details such as a timetable, ticket prices an the names of the speakers later on. The symposium committee is waiting for you to soak up some art and culture, or as we the Dutch would call it: Cultuursnuiven, on the 14th of April!

Stress Test
We have already finished two periods of the whole course! How do you feel about what you have achieved so far? I assume that at this point most of you are pretty used to following the academic course? Or maybe many assignments and other stressful obstacles still make you feel tired? At this moment, it is important to figure out what stress causes your tiredness and to know how to deal with it properly. Here is a small test to check your stress levels. • Minsun Kang
Imagine this situation:
While you are travelling to Africa, you coincidentally meet a tribe. Its members thankfully welcome you and you spend an amazing holiday with them. However, the end of your holiday is coming and the leader of the tribe gives you an animal for a goodbye present.
Answer the following question: Which of these animals would you like bring home with yourself?
A. Monkey You get stressed by a network of people. There are many kinds of people who you do not understand, for example, a person who always asks something, who only insists on his opinion and who has two faces. You want to talk with them in order to solve a problem, but it is difficult to start a conversation. This is what you are struggling with.
14
B. Sheep You get stressed by your relationship with your partner. It is difficult to accept the differences such as the living background, thinking and culture. There are so many conflicting things between you and them. If you are single, you have an obsession with the idea of having to date someone.
C. Cow You get stressed by your work and success. You are always concerned about your studies and future. You don’t need to be perfect for everything! You should let go of the heavy burden and anxiety you carry.
E. Lion You get stressed by the judgements of others. You are a person of a great self-respect and you can’t handle if someone ignores you or compares you to others. Moreover, you are less confident when you are mentioned by others.
D. Horse You get stressed by a rotating and boring life. You are looking for a thing that you can focus on within a tiresome life. However, there are not many interesting things, so you feel an emptiness.
Bulgarian Pitka and Zodiac Sign Fortunes for 2020 New Year for the bulgarian is the smell of tangerines, bengal flare and a custom known as survakane (typically the youngest members of the family lightly pat the back of others with a decorated stick to wish them a prosperous new year by reciting a poem but also get money themselves). But it is also associated with faerie atmosphere and expectations for better family moments tied to a tradition. These beliefs associated with the New Year’s customs in Bulgaria include a bread-like dish called Pitka. In each piece of this, usually white cheese-stuffed delicacy, is placed a piece of paper with a fortune written on it that tells what the upcoming year has in store for you. Unfortunately, I cannot present you with a real-life version of it but I took on the mission to recreate a similar experience by ascribing a typical fortune from a Bulgarian pitka to the zodiac signs. All the fortunes and zodiac signs below are matched on a lottery-like basis. What does 2020 have in store for you? • Tatyana Dimitrova
Aquarius (Jan. 20 - Feb. 18): You get the Health! There shall be sick diseases no more and you will be strong and cheerful this year!
Taurus (April 20 - May 20): White and tidy little house with two cars at the front and a lady in addition: that is your New Years fortune!
Leo (July 23 - Aug. 22): Learning will be the best fit for you! Do not search for reasons to slack because you have more exams to crack!
Scorpio (Oct. 23 - Nov. 21): A beautiful, fateful year is awaiting you, because you will be a captive of a Love spell!

This sheet is a Time Capsule! Fill it out and hide it somewhere safe! Do not forget about it, though, and open it up after 6 months or a year, or even more to see how you have (not) changed and reflect on yourself! Even if you forget about it, let’s hope in the future you will accidentally find it and it will make you smile. • Tatyana Dimitrova
