Mr. Manolo G. Pena, the school principal, department heads, teachers, and staff graced the event with their presence.

The School Parent-Teacher Association (SPTA) and parent volunteers took the role of organizing and planning the whole program, with the collaboration of student committees.

In an interview, Zoe Dulfo, Grade 9 Burbank, who is part of the program organizing committee, said they have never got the chance together as a class, so they intend to enjoy and make the most of the events the school planned for them.

“It’s our time to enjoy ourselves, have a great time with friends, and overall, make amazing memories,” she added.

One of the night’s highlights was the traditional “The Cotillion de Honor,” choreographed by Mr. Raymond Apostol, a MAPEH teacher.

Selected students also showcased their singing and dancing skills in various intermission numbers.

In the end, Justin Manuel and Septh Cada, both from Grade 9 Linnaeus, stood out and were crowned Prom King and Queen, respectively.

The prom concluded with an afterparty, where students got the chance to dance the night away.

Proving their mathematical prowess, Manila Science High School (MSHS) students participated in the first onsite school competition since the pandemic as the Mathematics Department hosted the Local Math Olympiad (LMO) in the H.A. Bordner Building on January 13, 2023.

Each class sent a team of three members who faced groups in the same grade level to secure first place.

The contest was divided into three rounds: easy, average, and difficult, in which questions were based on mathematical competencies at their respective grade levels. The groups who emerged victorious in each grade level were: Grade 8 Dalton, composed of Nathan Brent Co, Nash Jereo, and Raizen Adrales; Grade 9 Calvin, composed of Olga Galang, Ramayana Macaraya, and Gavrielle Logronio; and Grade 10 Einstein, composed of Raizey Reyes, Rein Dawis, and Kazuya Mori.

Formerly leading Ramon Avanceña High School (RAHS) and President Corazon C. Aquino National High School (PCCAHS), Mr. Pena said he had been exposed to different backgrounds of students in Manila City.

In his speech, he expressed his admiration for the students who, despite experiencing unstable financial circumstances and family situations, are eager to complete their education and strive to succeed.

According to him, knowledge will be nothing if it will not benefit humanity.

“Sana patuloy natin suportahan ang mga bata natin, mga mag-aaral natin, maiguide natin sila, mabigyan natin sila ng kaalaman na hindi lang para sa kanilang

With the loosening of COVID-19 restrictions in our country, the annual Junior High School Music Fest made a successful face-to-face return in front of the H.A. Bordner Building after two years of conducting online on March 31.

Under the leadership of the MAPEH Department and MSHS Singing Circle officers, they implemented changes and new guidelines to conform with the new normal and ensure that the event followed the prescribed health protocols.

The organizers renamed the event from Carol Fest to Choral Fest since this is usually held during December before the Christmas season and is now being held in March.

With this, participating sections can choose their contest piece to perform in the competition. They also considered the limited space in the school due to the ongoing building construction.

From the usual all students per section participation, the organizers decided to require a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 participants only in each section.

According to Rosa Maria S. Sarona, Grade 9 Calvin, batch representative of the MSHS Singing Circle, despite the changes and challenges, the event made the different batches interact, considering that MaSci is still in an online class setting.

“We were also given the chance to showcase our singing abilities, creativity, and cooperation,” she added.

During the online awarding ceremonies, the winners in Category A, composed of sections from Grades 7 and 8, Grade 8 sarili kundi sana mauunawaan nila na they are meant for others,” he said to the crowd. He further emphasized his hopes to sustain the tradition and excellence in MSHS and go beyond this goal.

“I hope you will be praying for and praying with me that we will all move towards the greater goal of making Manila Science High School the best science high school, not only in Manila, not only in the National Capital Region, but also in the whole Philippines,” he concluded.

The program focused on bringing joy and hopes to foster children by bringing entertainment through games, exercises, and performances, donating day-to-day essentials while establishing camaraderie, and fostering awareness among the class.

As a tribute to the program’s vision, the event featured Grade 9 Hertz’s band performing “With A Smile,” made and popularized by the OPM band Eraserheads.

According to Maximus Ovejas Tan, Grade 9 Hertz, and the program’s head organizer, the group intended to leave the place a little better than before.

“Through this outreach, we aim to give the children hope and leave them with a smile,” he added.

#TalinoParaSaKapwa” as the official campaign slogan of MSHS in the virtual flag ceremony via a Facebook live hosted by the MSHS-Supreme Student Government (MSHS-SSG) on February 13, 2023.

“OneMaSci stands for One - being the first pilot science high school in the Philippines… Number one stands also for excellence in the field of education, that is why E is highlighted. [It] also signifies E as excellence, and we always go for number one,” he explained in the program.

He hoped the SSG and other organizations will revolve their projects on this theme to remind the community to deliver #TalinoParaSaKapwa with unity and collaboration.

Teacher Association (HPTA) and other stakeholders supported the program through monetary and in-kind donations.

Project Ligaya was first drafted on November 5, 2022, with the initial date of the first program set on December 17, 2022, due to schedule conflicts, it was moved to a later date, providing the facilitators more time to improve the program.

Aiming to reach more beneficiaries, Gabrielle Magnabihon, Grade 9 Hertz, and the functioning director of the initiative, the team is working on applying for accreditation as an officially recognized school student club and expanding to Manila City and beyond as they hope to collaborate with other more schools.

“This will be a recurring theme, not only for this school year, maybe even beyond, as we continuously remind ourselves that we are one for excellence,” he said.

Mr. Peña also introduced a new symbol aligned with the theme, with one’s hand clasped shut while the forefinger points upwards.

“This indicates that we are acknowledging the source of intelligence and goodness and good things in this world, which is the one above,” he said, pertaining to the symbol.
