Seán de Búrca Your SU President
Haigh, a chairde! My name is Seán de Búrca and I’m your Students’ Union President for 2026/27. I’m from Loughrea originally and am a BA Government graduate. Last year, I was the Vice-President/Education Officer but you might also know me from being involved with SIN, Lit&Deb, or even just from seeing me around campus. As President, my job is to represent you and your needs and I’m always happy to help in any way I can, so feel free to reach out with any ideas or issues that you have.
su.president@ollscoilnagaillimhe.ie
Molly Hickey
Your SU Vice President/ Welfare and Equality Officer Hello, my name is Molly Hickey, and I am very excited to be your Vice President for Welfare and Equality this year. I’ve already spent two years on the SU as the Environmental and Sustainability Officer, so this is not my first rodeo! Other than that, I have been involved in University life in many ways, including serving on the committees of both Bród Soc and Simon Soc. I ran for this position because I care: I care about students, I care about people’s experiences on campus, and I care about making your time here as positive as possible. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time through email/message; I’m always here to listen.
su.welfare@ollscoilnagaillimhe.ie
Eimear Burke
Your SU Vice President/ Education Officer Hi everyone! My name is Eimear Burke, and I am delighted to be your Vice-President/Education Officer for the upcoming year. I’m from Galway and I am in second year studying philosophy along with Soc & Pol. I’m looking forward to spending the next year advocating for students and helping make the university a better place for everyone! Feel free to reach out to me or pop into the office with any issues or concerns you may have!
su.education@ollscoilnagaillimhe.ie
Cathal Ó hÉigeartaigh
Your SU Vice President for the Irish Language Mara daoibh uilig! My name is Cathal and I’m buzzing to be your VP for the Irish language this year. I’m from Belfast and I study Civil Engineering here in Ollscoil na Gaillimhe. The Irish language belongs to us all (no matter your ability!) and as somebody with first-hand experience of the value of language rights, I will work hard to ensure Irish is seen and heard on campus. If you have any issues, fire me an email or shoot me a DM @gaeilge_cmlong

The Student Levy It’s Your Money All University of Galway students pay the Student Levy in addition to annual fees. The Student Levy is used to fund a number of student activities such as the Students’ Union; Clubs; Societies; Student Health Unit; Campus Radio; and the CÉIM Peer Learning Programme. The Levy is required because the University does not provide adequate funding for these services. Other colleges have much better facilities that their students do not have to subsidise, and their students’ union, clubs and societies also receive better funding. This is something your Students’ Union is always working on. The Student Levy was reduced from €224 per student to €140 per student which means University of Galway students are no longer paying the highest levy in the country. The Student Levy is distributed as follows: Students’ Union €40.00 Societies €25.00 Clubs €25.00 Student Health Unit €22.00 Áras na Mac Léinn €3.00 Flirt FM €6.00 Student Project Fund €5.00 CÉIM €14.00 Total €140.00
The Student Levy is your money so if you have any questions about how it is spent,be sure to ask! Simply contact the SU President, Sean, on su.president@universityofgalway.ie The Students’ Union presents its accounts to Comhairle Comhaltas na Mac Léinn (SU Council) each year and they are also available to download from our website.
Peer Learning for 1st Year Students Want to meet people in your course, get to grips with coursework and have some fun? You’ll meet weekly in small groups with students from your course and trained student leaders from higher years of your course. You’ll be able to ask questions, take part in activities, discuss coursework and learn together. The content of CÉIM sessions is entirely student led. Based on the well-evidenced Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) model operating in over 30 countries, CÉIM was initiated by University of Galway Students’ Union in 2013 and is run as a partnership between students, academic staff and the Students’ Union. CÉIM is currently offered to 1st year students in the following courses: Agricultural Science • Biomedical Science • Biotechnology • Earth and Ocean Sciences • Engineering • Financial Mathematics and Economics • Geography • Genetics & Genomics • Law • Marine Science • Political Science and Sociology • Science • Spanish • Physics • Psychology Why attend CÉIM? • Settle in quickly to University of Galway • Make friends in your discipline • Succeed academically • Develop study skills • Practice transferable skills Impact of CÉIM • Regular CÉIM attendees on average achieve higher grades (11-31% higher) than irregular and non-attendees • 93% of 1st year students surveyed in 2025/26 say CÉIM helped them meet others on their course What 1st year students say about CÉIM ‘CÉIM is a great opportunity to meet people in your course and to gain advice and experience from older students studying the same course’ ‘Casual place to chill and ask questions to people who already know a bit about the course, I like the lack of pressure.’ ‘Encourages creative thinking and the ability to advocate for what you think’ ‘I felt less nervous going into exams after hearing tips from the leaders’
www.ceim.su.universityofgalway.ie su.ceim@universityofgalway.ie CÉIM was initiated by University of Galway Students’ Union in 2013 and is run as a partnership between students, academic staff and the Students’ Union.

Here’s some of our Top Tips for life in Galway: 1. Buy a decent rain coat. Galway is known as the “Graveyard of Umbrellas” 2. Always walk in single file over the Salmon Weir Bridge or prepare to face death by a thousand dirty looks. 3. Don’t ask the DJ to play Galway Girl. Any version. Ever. 4. If you’re feeling sad/angry/ hungover go and walk the Prom. You’ll feel better with the added bonus of beautifully sculpted cheekbones from the wind. 5. Everywhere in Galway is a 10 minute walk (if you walk fast enough). 6. There’s always free stuff in the SU Office – condoms, pens, tampons, sweets, wall planners, advice, hugs etc. – just call in and ask nicely. 7. Join as many clubs and societies as possible. Get all the free pizza and pad out your CV with achievements like “Treasurer of the 4th Largest Home & Away Appreciation Society West of the Shannon” 8. Carry a campus map with you at all times. You won’t get lost and you can also mark in where the treasure is buried. 9. Soggy socks are the depths of human misery. Always have a spare pair of socks within arm’s reach #WetAtlanticWay 10. Remember to always be a bag of cans and not a bag of cant’s.
