What a time it is to be a part of Nugent Care! This year we celebrate 135 years of care and advocacy for and with vulnerable people. Recently, Clumber Lodge, headed up by the effervescent Sister Benedict, turned 75 years old! In the next issue of this magazine we will be highlighting our celebrations of the 135th year anniversary.

In this issue you will find exciting new articles and information about what is currently happening around Nugent Care. Mark Roche, Director of Finance and Business Support will be supporting Nugent Care by running in the London Marathon, we hear about one of our valuable volunteers winning a Mercy Award, and a lovely and emotive story about Christine and how involvement with our Epsom Street Centre has changed her life. It is definitely an article worth reading. Speaking of Epsom Street they are just about to launch their new Radio Station!

Further, we are also providing you with the first draft of key points of our new Strategic Plan for 2016 to 2020. We consulted with Service Users, Managers, Staff, Volunteers and other Stakeholders. You will note our plans for 2020 as well as our new draft values, iACCORD. I have been presenting this draft to the focus groups that participated in the development of the content. These drafts will be presented to the Governing Body for approval on March 3rd, so if you have any comments directly about how we can make the Strategic Plan better, please send your comments through to Clarice Wright, at (CEwright@nugentcare.org).

The Business Plans for 2016/2017 will be drawn down from the Strategic Plan.

Mercy Award winner

Congratulations to our volunteer Catherine on her Broughton Hall Mercy Award.

Catherine El-Saiegh is a volunteer with our fundraising department.

Catherine has been with us since Sept last year, she not only supports Nugent Care, but also lots of other organisations and is involved with lots of Voluntary groups. Catherine has worked with us before, when in 2012, with Marie, she was instrumental in gaining a #3000 grant for the Clubmoor Group.

Catherine is a Year 12 student at Broughton Hall Catholic High School in West Derby and is working towards her AS and A Levels. She is involved in supporting younger students, amongst other volunteer work at school, and was recently the first student to be awarded the Mercy Award in recognition of this.

Catherine really enjoys working with Michele and Fran and meeting new people, and finds the variety of the projects really exciting. She hopes to work in the charity sector when she finishes school.

Christine’s Story (name has been changed)

‘Christine’ “would have been on the streets without Nugent Care” and wanted us to tell her story.

‘Christine’ is in her mid 50’s, she has worked since she was 16 and is still working. She has a couple of low paid part time jobs. Christine has some debt problems.

‘Christine’ helps her daughter who is bringing up 2 girls ages 6 and 13. Christine’s daughter has been involved in a very violent relationship; her partner is now in prison because of the violence.

On several occasions the violence was towards ‘Christine’, because of this she fled her house and ended up sofa surfing.

A local charity re-housed ‘Christine’ but found her accommodation that she couldn’t afford.

‘Christine’ has to leave this accommodation as it was putting her more in debt.

Eve , thank you, I am now getting back on my feet because of your help”

During all this, ‘Christine’ was at a very low point in her life, she relied on local food banks and the support from Epsom Street.

The new flat ‘Christine’ moved into did not have a cooker, Nugent Care supplied a new cooker, food, bedding, and duvets ‘Christine’ and toys for her granddaughters.

‘Christine’ said; “I would have been on the streets without Nugent Care, at my age, I was sofa surfing. “ “There is no way I could have ever paid for a new cooker, you have saved my life and my sanity, I was going under with the stress of everything, you even gave me new pyjama’s for my granddaughters for Christmas”

‘Christine’ is beginning to get her life back on track, she is volunteering with a local community centre and working towards achieving her level 3 in Play Work.

“I am getting my life back bit, by bit and couldn’t have done it without the help from Nugent Care” 3

From Here to CareSys

Emma Lawton

Hi everyone, great news to report this month with our progress with CareSys. As you know CareSys is being implemented across all of our services and I caught up with you in the last article to update you all on how we were progressing with this huge project.

The nights have been long, the files have been even longer… our staff have typed their fingers to the bone but the finish line is in sight for Adult Services.

Ian Travis in QA has completed his audit on the quality of the electronic files at Lime House, St Joseph’s and Geel and Hitchen Court and has given high praise to the quality of their input.

Sister Benedicte Like many new things, it was with excitement but some trepidation that we embarked on CareSys; but there’s no need to fear, Emma is here!

Feeling we needed a little refresher from our initial training, Emma came to Clumber to give support to staff and a kick start in using Caresys.

Lime House has already ditched the paperwork (in line with our regulatory and legal requirements obviously!) and went fully electronic on Monday 22nd February. Exciting times ahead!

Some staff were very anxious about the system, frightened of doing something wrong or feeling embarrassed at their slow speed of typing, (which always improves the more we do) but the Staff and I cannot express how helpful Emma was, giving constant reassurance to those who do not feel computer confident.

Geel and St Joseph’s are following very closely behind and I will update you in the next Team Brief with their continued efforts and fabulous progress.

One such staff said, “I can’t believe I am doing this, after all my fears and moaning, that I am actually enjoying doing it; how great is that?”

Wow – what an absolutely fantastic start we have made with the Children’s Sector!

Nugent House School have had their new PC’s delivered and installed and are raring to go.

It was amazing; we intended doing just one of the children’s files on the first occasion but we ended up working on about 8 files.

St Catherine’s and Marian House have leapt forwards and have made unbelievable progress in such a short space of time so well done to everyone for making this happen.

As staff were working through each child’s personal information (inserting contacts), we discovered that there were some titles missing that we needed within the drop-down menu but Emma was able to insert them instantly, which was really helpful and allowed staff to brainstorm

and adjust things with Emma’s input on the day.

The atmosphere during Emma’s session was fun, relaxed and people were eager to engage. Emma made us all feel comfortable enough to ask for help and welcomed any questions we had.

Staff were also able to recognise when other members of staff needed help too and Emma encouraged us all to help each other.

We have four super users now to support and guide staff who need help or encouragement.

Members of staff commented that they usually do not feel adequate enough in relation to using new programmes on computers; but felt that this experience really benefited them and they were excited to start using it.

Emma explained to staff the benefits of the system and went through everything we needed with clear and concise advice.

Emma also explained to us that if we had any more queries at all in relation to CareSys, we could contact her for more advice and gave us her number.

All in all, the staff at Clumber Lodge felt this was a very beneficial session and look forward to Emma’s next visit, where I am sure we will have lots more questions.

DONATE DON’T DUMP!

We have recently become a member of the Merseyside Textile Forum, which aims to reduce textile waste and raise awareness of recycling.

I’m still less than 3 months in post, but everybody has been so welcoming and supportive I feel settled in and I am really enjoying being part of this amazing organisation.

We have been allocated a textile bank, situated in Vine Court, one of the halls of residence for the University of Liverpool, and all donations will go to our charity shop. Every little helps!

I am working on some key projects, which Inc lude: Development of a social media and digital marketing strategy which will aim to involve staff and service users in growing the online conversation about our successes.

Finance

The HR department are currently finalising the move from the existing HR system (Snowdrop) onto iTrent. When completed this will give us a fully integrated HR/ Payroll system which will reduce some of the current paper flow and duplication of work.

Our financial situation has not improved in the past month.

Occupancy in the schools is down with Local Authorities budgets stretched and hence placements harder to secure.

As part of the transition, HR will gradually be taking control of the HR features of iTrent which the finance team have previously managed.

The new recruitment module for iTrent is now up and running, so going forward all new starters will be entered onto iTrent through the recruitment process rather than through the payroll process.

HR have also now taken control of the annual leave schemes on iTrent. This doesn’t involve any change in the way that you enter annual leave into iTrent. It simply means that from now on, the HR team is your point of contact for any queries in relation to annual leave on iTrent.

St Catherine’s has been successful in securing a grant to upgrade the facilities and this has meant several rooms needing to be closed. Clumber however is still maintaining occupancy at a reasonable level.

In the Adult Sector Geel and James Nugent Court are both below plan due to occupancy and agency use but overall, Fundraising income is above plan.

We have positive plans in place across the organisation through the strategic plan and EFQM to make our services as attractive as possible to placement officers and we are working diligently to be good stewards of our financial resources.

Thanks to all managers who are working hard to find efficiencies.

Making Sharepoint a reality. I have been tasked with bringing the project to fruition in the coming months. This will be a very strategic resource in that it provides a intranet style communication, collaboration and information portal that will help to improve how we do business.

The Strategic Plan is a key focus, I have been working with Normandie to develop the look and feel for IACCORD. You’ll see on pages 8 & 9 the initial design work that we are developing and will be introducing at the Start of the Year Conference.

I am in the process of recruiting a marketing assistant. This role will help to improve delivery of marketing support for all services .

And finally, We have just appointed Mashbo, a Liverpool web and digital development company, to work with us to develop an integrated Marketing and Communications strategy.

This will include a new website and digital presence and will provide a deep analysis of us and our audience to drive forward the strategic plan.

Christmas Homeless Appeal 2015

HSBC Deliver Christmas Cheer to James Nugent Court HSBC Bank Plc Liverpool Corporate Centre contacted us just a few days before Christmas to say that staff wanted to support James Nugent Court for a second year running by purchasing Christmas gifts for residents.

Robert Spowart who is the Corporate Relationship Director at the Liverpool Corporate Centre delivered the gifts on December 23 and handed out later that evening at the residents’ Christmas party.

Thanks to Robert and Victoria for their generosity and for kindly supporting James Nugent Court.

Lloyds Banking Group

The support we received for our annual Christmas Homeless Appeal was phenomenal and we would like to say Thank You to all the businesses, schools, parishes, and individuals for their continued support.

Through the donations of toys, food, clothes, toiletries and money we have been able to support local individuals and families in need. Raising a total of £13,791.41 cash and £12,000 in donated goods.

We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to support this service at Nugent Care.

Crib Appeal 2015 Thank You to all the Parishes who have so far contributed over £3600 to the Crib Appeal.

Epsom Street Community Centre Nugent Care took over the Epsom St Community Centre in Vauxhall, better known as EPSY, from Liverpool City Council, in 2014.

Staff and Volunteers where placed to help create a robust community centre while fully understanding the issues that surround its people, the neighbourhood and the challenges that they face.

The EPSY team, Mandi and Donna, work very hard to balance the needs of local people by opening up opportunity, choice, training and education, setting standards and letting the community know they have an ally, somewhere safe they can go, a place for them.

Training Success

One of our community members has just passed her online safeguarding adults course, and our group of young people have recently passed their first aid, well done Heidi, Mia, Jessica, Demi Leigh, Olivia, Lois and thanks Julie for all your support (TSYP)

Epsy Radio

The children and young people from Epsy have long had a dream to have their own radio station, and now, through funds raised at the Merseyside Young Professionals Charity Ball in October 2015, their dream can become a reality.

They have started their media training and are working on a number of different ideas including an urban project about the environment and reviewing a play at the Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse Theatre.

The money will be used to provide all the equipment, training and resources to create their own radio station.

As they develop their skills they will be planning different projects and arranging interviews with the wider community and local business professionals.

The group will have two weekly training sessions on using the equipment and how to plan campaigns, projects and interviews. They will have their own website and will develop magazines, pod casts and posters about it.

The group presented a video to the MYP Ball to show how the project would help them and the area they live in. (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=BCXko_2z6GE)

This project will give them a voice and an authority to not only talk about but tackle the issues that are affecting them and the community they live in.

They have received ÂŁ3000 to date with a cheque for a further amount being presented on Monday 29th February.

Staff Member Profile: Anne-Marie Carney Assistant Director Children’s Services Anne-Marie is new to Nugent Care having started in December. We asked her a few questions about herself:

Beartrix Courtesy of my 7 year old great niece 4 weeks in and here is how my new exciting role as Assistant Director Children’s Services is shaping up.

A day in the working life of Anne-Marie: 6.30am – my day starts with half an hour Mindfulness meditation to focus my mind for the day ahead and a relaxed healthy breakfast 8am - Days I am in Head Office I am walking to work so far through rain, blizzards and wind arriving invigorated and ready to start what has so far been very varied working days. Roll on the Spring!

You will hear more from me about wellbeing and looking after ourselves in order to prevent absorbing the distress of the children and young people we care for.

8.30 onwards: Some days I am off-site all day and some days you will get me in Head Office. I am delighted to have now visited all the Children’s Services sites and have begun to get to know some of the staff and all of the managers.

I have been concentrating so far on getting a feel of how the children and young people in our care appear to be settled in their home environments or learning in their schools.

I am making connections with all Departments across the organisation, clear that whole system improvements only come from everyone working together.

To this end I will be a regular member of the Senior Leadership team , Finance meetings, Safeguarding, Caresys, Care Governance, Training, School Governor’s Boards and the Archdiocese Commission.

I am registered with OFSTED as Responsible Individual for all the registered Children’s Services sites and will be involved in their improvement plans and EFQM developments. I am also the Alegations Manager.

I am working closely with Quality Assurance and Marketing to look in detail at supporting continual improvement and raising the profile of our services externally.

I will want to see us continually listening to children and young people’s views and ensuring they are reflected in any service improvements we make going forward.

New Mobile Phones Scott Davis

To continue with the IT Business Plan of improving communications we will shortly be deploying new mobile devices, with full access to company email, calendar, global address list and wireless enabled for internet access at all sites.

They will be managed via our new Mobile Device Management (MDM) platform that provides full control of all mobiles. It gives us the provision to not only deploy business applications and IT policies, but also the ability to remote wipe and trace in the event a device is lost or stolen.

The New devices will roll-out in three phases: Phase 1 – Central Office Staff From 15th February Phase 2 – School Staff From 22nd February Phase 3 – Other Service Staff From 29th February You will be contacted by Sam Peters, our IT Administrator, to arrange the change over. This will include: Return of old mobile device (please ensure you return boxes, chargers, etc.)

Backup of old mobile device Transfer of contact numbers Allocation of new mobile device Restore contact numbers to new mobile device Sign off (for returns and provision)

NHS Information Governance Toolkit Barbara Taylor

Commissioners of services now require providers to complete the Information Governance Toolkit to Level 2 and this requirement forms part of any Service Level Agreement.

Nugent Care registered to complete the toolkit in September 2014 with a view to attaining Level 2 in all areas.

The IG Toolkit is split into 4 sections each of which have sub-sections : • Information Governance Management – 4 sub sections • Confidentiality and Data Protection Assurance – 6 sub sections • Information Security Assurance – 8 sub sections • Clinical Information Assurance – 1 sub section An Information Governance Toolkit group with representatives from the following relevant departments was set up – IT, HR, Finance, Property Services, Training and Purchasing.

As the lead person for Information Governance, I am the chair of the group which met regularly. Action Plans were produced to ensure that the necessary evidence to achieve Level 2 was made available and uploaded to the IG Toolkit drive on Nugent Care’s computer system.

The devices being deployed are Blackberry Leap or Samsung G4 mini, user guides for both are available, please contact IT.

All evidence was submitted by the 31st March 2015 and Nugent Care achieved Level 2. Evidence for the Information Governance Toolkit is submitted on an annual basis and Nugent Care hopes to achieve Level 3 in at least 5 sections this year.

I would recommend you read and familiarise yourself with the guides to assist you with using your new mobile device.

Nugent Care has shown its commitment to Information Governance with the new post of Information Governance and Claims Officer and I will take up this role when a new Head of Quality Assurance is in place. The new role will enable me to ensure that Information Governance systems and procedures are implemented and adhered to across the organisation.

Well-being Curriculum at Nugent House School

Credit Union When money is tight people often look for a short term loan, and this may mean going to a commercial pay-day lender.

There are concerns nationally about how these companies operate, and about the huge level of debt that people can take on if they don’t pay back the loan back quickly.

Gill Hughes, Principal and Dr Nash Working with Dr Nash Popovic and the University of East London, Nugent House are introducing an innovative approach to improving outcomes for our young people, the Wellbeing Curriculum.

This is in response to Government concerns that mental health issues and emotional issues are not being correctly addressed in education for many pupils and leaving them unable to improve their own lives.

We are privileged to be working with Dr Nash Popovic, who is a Senior lecturer in the School of Psychology at University of East London, who are leading the field in research in wellbeing in education.

An alternative is to borrow from a Credit Union. These are notfor-profit organisations, run and owned by their members, who provide financial services in an ethical and affordable way.

Individuals open a savings account, and pay in an amount each month. They are then able to take out a loan for a variety of purposes, at a low interest rate.

Credit Unions normally pay an annual divided to savers.

Besides being a lecturer, Nash is also an educational consultant and a counsellor in private practice, receiving his PhD from the Institute of Education, London.

Nugent Care will shortly be joining with Partners Credit Union Ltd to invite staff to open an account, and make payments to their account via deductions from their pay.

He has developed the Personal Synthesis Programme, a systematic and comprehensive approach to psychological education and personal development. It has been implemented in a number of educational institutions in the UK and abroad.

Partners are a well-established Credit Union based in Liverpool, who work with NHS Trusts and Local Authorities in Merseyside.

The Well-Being Curriculum is applicable for primary and secondary school pupils and for students in post-compulsory education. It can also be used in adult groups and for recreational, in addition to educational, purposes.

Nugent Care will have no knowledge of or involvement in your financial affairs, other than paying your monthly savings deposit to Partners on your behalf.

The curriculum can be delivered through a variety of methods, including direct teaching, group discussions, individual and pairsbased work. Teachers and facilitators will become familiar with a battery of self-assessment measures, that allow them and/or students to evaluate their happiness levels, discover their signature strengths and evaluate other characteristics.

The programme is delivered as part of PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) and is compatible with SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) requirements.
