We’re 135! NUGENTCARE.ORG ISSUE 1 December
Celebrating 135 years!
Welcome
Monsignor James Nugent (1822-1905), founded the Liverpool Catholic Children’s Protection Society on 16 April 1881, and now in 2016 we celebrate as Nugent Care reaches 135 years of service to the community.
Welcome to iACCORD! What an exciting issue! You may have noticed that Team Brief is now called iACCORD, which is the acronym for our updated values! If you haven’t seen what iACCORD stands for yet, you can learn more about iACCORD in this brief. We also see in this issue how tirelessly our fundraising department works, we share a great story about the journey of James Nugent Court and in the Staff Spotlight, is Gail Jessop. Also, a resounding well done to Mark Roche for achieving his personal best at the London Marathon raising money for Epsy. What an achievement!

Speaking of our values, we recently launched our Strategic Plan 2016 -2020. In order to share this great piece of work widely, we had three strategic events in March. These included our first Leadership Summit, the Start of the Year Conference at the Museum of Liverpool and a 135th birthday celebration (one of many to come I am sure). We took many photos of these events – has your photo been included in the articles? A portion of the Strategic Plan is about increasing our profile so that we may be better able to serve the vulnerable people in our communities. As part of this, our brand identity is evolving. Mike James, our Marketing and Communication Manager, expands on this initiative within this issue. If you have any thoughts, comments or suggestions about our brand, please email Mike at michael.james@nugentcare.org. Normandie Wragg

As we celebrate our 135th anniversary we are looking forward, and implementing our new vision and values for 2016 - 2020 with the aim of continuing the kind and essential work started by Father Nugent, helping the most vulnerable people in our communities, caring, educating, protecting and inspiring those in need, being an employer of choice and an advocate: A voice for the voiceless.

Staff should therefore see an increase in their take home pay as a proportion of gross pay, although for staff who are contributing to the Teachers’ Pension Fund, this will be offset to an extent by the withdrawal of “contracting out” of the State second pension, which increases the rate of National Insurance contributions for people who are in a final salary pension scheme.

Afternoon Tea at the Hilton 8 Members of the Old Swan Lipreading group took Afternoon Tea at the Hilton in Liverpool last week. They enjoyed assorted sandwiches, cakes, scones and as much tea & coffee as they liked. Everyone said it was a nice venue for lunch and the staff looked after them well, allocating a quiet table and being aware of their hearing loss. It was good lipreading practice for the group too!
Clumber Minibus Phil Broadhurst from Heaton’s Motor Company helped provide a modified minibus for Clumber Lodge at Christmas, and made a real impact for one of our service users, who prior to having the bus, was unable to take part in days trips. Sister Ben said “It added to our Christmas Joy to have the new bus. We are very grateful.” Pictured, Phil Broadhurst, Bernard Logan, Our service user, and Terry ccccc from Drury Lane.

Cover your everyday health with Medicash
London Bound
Whether they’re unexpected, or essential for maintaining your everyday health, healthcare costs can be daunting and quickly add up over time. That’s why Nugent Care has teamed up with Medicash and are delighted to introduce our healthcare plan that pays back on a wide range of treatments and helps cover the cost of looking after you and your family.
Staff and boys from Nugent House School where lucky enough to visit London in March. They took a trip on the London Eye to see the city from above, travelled along the Thames on The London Duck, a refurbished WW2 transporter, to see the city from the river, and finally, had tea with her Majesty, well, they had a tour round her house, I’m not sure she was in. The boys had a great time and have some amazing memories.
From as little as £6.95 per month you can receive cash back on all your healthcare bills such as optical, dental and everyday treatments such as flu jabs, physiotherapy and much much more. This means that you can organise your finances and have the peace of mind that your healthcare worries are being taken care of.
Former staff members had a get together earlier this year. Do you recognise any of your former colleagues?
For more information, or to sign up today, simply call your Medicash representative Sean Kelly on 07703 828334 or email sean.kelly@medicash.org.
CareSys News Hi everyone, it’s great to report further progress with CareSys this month. In the last article I updated you with a piece from Sister Benedicte who has been pivotal in the progress at Clumber. The Children’s Services are continuing their efforts of transferring the current files onto the system, and we are seeing great progress since the last Team Brief. IT have had their hands full, with delivery of equipment, installation of new WIFI points and assisting in our Training at Head Office. Further background work has been required to tailor the system towards Ofsted’s requirements, so thank you to the Registered Managers for your patience while this additional paperwork has been created. I hope to share another go live date with you in the next article, it’s anyone’s race at the moment as to who will get there first! Lime House are now LIVE! What does that mean, I hear you ask? For months, our homes have been updating residents’ electronic records whilst at the same time keeping the paper files up to date. Their record keeping has been doubled! QA audited the files and approved the launch to fully electronic recording in March.
Massive congratulations to Kath Hurst and her team for steamrollering ahead and making this happen. It’s been a huge task for everyone there and we are very proud of your achievements. Fred’s team at Margaret Roper House have achieved so much in the last 3 months and I’m thrilled to tell you they are also live as of 11th April. High praise indeed to staff at Margaret Roper who have achieved this milestone so quickly.
Follow us on twitter Nugent House School is now on Twitter.
QA will continue to audit the files and ensure we are meeting with the required standards in safe record keeping, well done again to everyone involved. St Joseph’s and Geel are still working away to meet with the recommendations set by QA and we are anticipating further go live dates in the upcoming weeks! I’m excited! Community Services have now completed their training, thank you to all of you for being accommodating with fitting this training in. We are expecting their new equipment to land in the next few weeks, our IT Department will be busy configuring, delivering and installing this kit shortly. I look forward to updating you in the next brief with some progress from each of these services. Keep Smiling!

New Starters at Head office
James Nugent Court achieves GOOD status from CQC.
Ayo Bakare, Head of Strategic Relationships On April 29th Ayo Bakare joined Nugent Care as Head of Strategic Relationships. Ayo comes to us from Hope University, Liverpool and is looking forward to building strong relationships with the Principals and Registered Managers across the charity. The purpose of this important and senior role within Nugent Care is to build strategic relationships across our stakeholders, including Local Authorities, CCG’s, Councils, other Charities, NHS and private business. Ayo will be responsible for generating new sales/development/referrals and build on an existing customer/stakeholder base. The post will work autonomously on a day to day basis under the direction of the Chief Executive.
Caroline McConnell, Head of Quality Assurance On May 23rd Caroline McConnell joined as Head of Quality Assurance. Caroline comes to us from The Walton Centre, NHS. Caroline is particularly interested in quality frameworks. The purpose and objective of the role is to support the delivery of quality services to meet and exceed internal and external regulatory standards and to ensure that Nugent Care is compliant with all charity governance requirements. Caroline will lead the Quality Assurance department going forward. A few of the key operational objectives for this role include; • Maintaining a fit for purpose suite of policies to underpin the delivery of Nugent Care services • To develop and oversee the internal assessment of services in line with the Nugent Care ‘Quality Assurance Framework’. • Work with the Operations Directorate to ensure that the service user policy and framework represents best practice and is implemented. • Develop and co-ordinate impact reporting across Nugent Care services. The post will also works autonomously on a day to day basis under the broad direction of the Chief Executive and with a strong dotted line to the Director of Operations. In short, the QA will help our services to be ahead of the regulators to continue to ensure that we provide outstanding provision to our service users.
Barbara Taylor, Information Governance and Claims Manager Although Barbara is not a new starter, she will be starting a revised role. Barbara who currently manages the QA team will be moving into her revised role as Information Governance and Claims Manager. Barbara’s new role, will be to ensure the effective and efficient management of information governance, complaints and insurance claims across Nugent Care. A programme of induction is currently in place for these two new starters, please welcome them to Nugent Care. As you know we are projecting a deficit budget for 2016/17 overall and we are very mindful of our spending at this time and these new posts are cost neutral to the Nugent Care as we have re-allocated existing vacant or retired roles and converted these to posts as an investment to quality services and a sustainable organisation.
‘There were a few whoops, cheers and happy tears.’ In January 2015 James Nugent Court was subject to CQC warning notices, an embargo from Liverpool City Council preventing new admissions (occupancy was 36 out of 56), and an overall CQC rating of Requires Improvement across the board. A plan of action was needed to work out what had gone wrong, why the service had started to fail, and what we could do to put it right? Here we had a beautiful modern building, with great residents, fantastic facilities and a committed staff team. The potential was evident but we desperately needed to get back on track. The first step was to develop the staff team and build relationships and working methods based on mutual respect and trust. We made a concerted effort to become a happy, settled, more engaged, motivated and productive team. We worked hard on improving our processes and reporting, improving the quality of our resident’s care plans, raising the standard of our paperwork and embedding processes such as staff supervision, relatives meetings and staff meetings. Across this time we were subject to intense scrutiny from Liverpool City Council, Safeguarding and CQC and we saw these challenges as opportunities to display our strength, cohesiveness, resilience and pride in our work. More importantly that we have a
great care home that provides excellent quality care and treats our residents with dignity, respect and compassion. We were re-inspected by the CQC on 7 January 2016 and received a Good rating across all areas inspected with an overall Good rating. There were a few whoops, cheers and happy tears. I have always had ambition for this service, ambition to succeed, ambition to lead this service to great things, I have been lucky to have a great line manager, Helen Burgess, Assistant Director of Adult Services, who is supportive and empathetic and understands what it is like to walk in my shoes....her unwavering faith in my ability has been invaluable and she has kept me sane at times. Colleagues at Central office have also been helpful and supportive and hopefully there is a greater understanding of the daily pressures faced by home managers and the quantity of work we have to do to satisfy our residents, relatives, employer, and regulators. Our Good rating is now our driver to make the service exceptional and to achieve Outstanding next January.

My 3 hour 5 minute London Marathon Mark Roche - director of Finance and Business Support
All that training and it was finally here, the London Marathon.
The crowds though were amazing and there wasn’t a part of the course without people cheering, there was also music throughout and drink stations every mile. The course is also not as flat as it looks on the TV with several gradients throughout. Runners hate gradients in races as it requires more effort to stay at the same pace!
I got up earlier than planned that day and got ready, checked and double checked that I had my water, number attached and my gels.
At about 16 miles the pace started to tell and my hamstrings started to tighten. I just concentrated on the finish line and tried to forget the pain. I caught my brother up at 20 miles and after a brief chat went passed him. He is a sub 3 hour runner but had had a few injuries, but it was still nice to pass him!
I had trained for 6 months for this day. In the later weeks I had averaged 50-60 miles a week, running up hills and sprinting which are all part of a standard marathon training plan. The start and finish of the London Marathon are in two different places so a tube journey was required. I met my brother and we set off for the tube station by Westminster Bridge. On that morning tube travel is free for runners and there were thousands all travelling in the same direction all looking forward to the 26.2 mile race. As there are 40,000 or so runners there are in fact 3 separate starts, I was in the green start with similar timed runners as I had a ‘good for age’ qualifying time. We had to pack our bags onto a lorry some 40 minutes before the race start and as it was a cold day, I found an unused black bin liner which I put holes in to keep me warm – it really was that cold! The organisation of the marathon is fantastic and as the clock struck 10.00 the gun went off and me and several thousand runners set off. I decided I would set off at 6.50 pace which is just about 3 hour marathon pace. This was a bit faster than I had run in training but I just thought I would go for it. I maintained this for the half marathon and in fact set a personal best for that distance in the race. I knew my brother would be in front of me but thought I might catch him up later. I knew the pace would catch up at some stage though!
Towards the end the crowds got bigger and louder but the miles seemed to get longer. I eventually saw the finishing line and saw the clock tick onto 3:05 I therefore put a bit of a sprint on to get in under 3:06. I finished in 3:05:42 this was a personal best for me by more than 5 minutes.
‘£3,000 was raised... that has to be worth the training and the pain!’
As soon as I stopped my legs start hurting but you have to walk about half a mile to collect a goody bag with water etc and collect your meddle. My first thought was never again. It was a great day though and £3,000 was raised for the kids at the Epsom Street Centre, they will now all be able to enjoy a short holiday – that has to be worth the training and the pain! Walking back to the hotel so many people congratulate you on the street which was unexpected but really nice and people everywhere afterwards have their meddle around there necks. So will I do it again….. not sure as I have done 3 marathons now so maybe I will look for another challenge. Fully responsive and dynamic new website Mashbo are a respected and award winning web development agency, and have created a beautiful new site for us, that brings the new brand to life. The new website will be designed to be ‘responsive’ meaning that it will be viewable on all devices, laptops, tablets, mobile phones, providing greater flexibility in an age when 60% of people are looking at websites on mobile, increasing our traffic and building our profile.
New brand and websites near completion Liverpool based Mashbo and Bread were commisioned in March to work with us to develop a marketing and communications strategy, new website for Nugent Care, and a fresh new look for our brand. Following a period of research and development, including visiting our services and consultation with stakeholders, service users, staff, our Governing Body and board of trustees, our exciting new brand and website are close to completion. The proposals for a refresh of Nugent Care have been recieved very positively by all with recognition of the need for this on-going development. “blowing away the cobwebs and allowing us to stand proud in the market place and make a bold statement about who we are and where we are going” Key to the new brand is a dynamic new way of talking about our work with the removal of the word ‘care’ and development of a ‘family’ of services, Education, Residential, Community, Family and Support. This will provide people with an easier route to understanding what we do.
This new approach is brave and bold and reflects our ambitious strategic plan’s aims and objectives. “if we follow the brand journey across previous years, and brand versions, it makes sense to now become ‘Nugent’, and to drop ‘Care’ from the brand, to allow our services to come to the fore” “the concept of ‘together we are Nugent’ … is great” “like the move away from ‘Care’ to Nugent. Really like the idea of sub-branding” The new brand will be finalised across the next few weeks, during which time we will develop a strategic plan for the roll out of brand guidelines that will involve everybody in this exciting process of change. On the next page is the draft home page for the new website. This shows how the new brand will work and how the services will be represented. With clearer, cleaner layouts, and easier navigation the website will be a strong aspect of our communciation tools and will lead in delivery of profile raising with improved content including case studies and video. Each of our services pages will be content led, meaning they will be full of images of real people - our services users and staff, our buildings and will feature video content, case studies, reports and all the regulatory links required. They will also be able to draw in content from other areas, such as specific job ads. All content will updatable by the marketing team and will be developed through a content plan to keep the site fresh and up to date. Mashbo are also developing a new site for Nugent House School, that will reflect the schools identity whilst sitting in the Nugent brand ‘family’.
Vision To be an entirely dignified & outstanding organisation by 2020 The vision for the organisation continues the spirit of our purpose which is to continue to provide and develop the kind and essential work of Father Nugent. Outstanding has been developed to fit our purpose into the context of a sector that is rigorously regulated. Dignified relates to a value check against our faith based origins within the Catholic Social Teachings including; Human Dignity Community & Participation Care for Creation Dignity in Work Peace and Reconciliation Solidarity Our vision acknowledges the standards of a holistic environment which includes service users, stakeholders (including staff), regulators and a strong value base.
Purpose - Why we exist Nugent Care is here is to continue the kind and essential work started by Father Nugent helping the most vulnerable people in our communities.
Our Mission – How we achieve our purpose Our ideal is that everyone is able to live comfortably and in dignity. Unfortunately, for many people this is not the case in their lives, or for some part of their life, and Nugent Care aspires to be there for them. It is essential that through our service provision, we aim to be dignified and outstanding in all that we do. To care, educate, protect and inspire those in need. To be an employer of choice. To be an advocate: A voice for the voiceless.
Our Values In order to fulfil our mission and purpose we have agreed on a set of values that are the foundation our beliefs and our behaviours throughout the organisation. iACCORD - MAY 2016
Leadership Conference 2016 In March we held our inaugural Leadership conference at the Quaker Meeting House in Liverpool City Centre. The aim of the conference, which was attended by managers from across our services, was to discuss the new Strategic Plan 2016-2020 and our updated values, open up various initiatives that will help delivery and provide an opportunity for managers to spend some time together sharing ideas. Normandie Wragg, CEO, presented the new strategic plan and discussed our ambitious plan for the next 4 years. The agenda included presentations covering various topics: CareSys and Quality Assurance, presented by Toby Smith and Emma Lawton, Raising the Profile of Nugent Care presented by Mike James and Marie Reynolds, and Stories of Leadership from Annette Moore, Kath Hurst, Sister Benedicte and Marie Higgins. We also had an inspirational leadership talk from Andy Whitehead which also had us on our feet.
Start of The Year conference reveals our vision for the future of Nugent Care We celebrated our 135th anniversary in April, a time to reflect and confirm our dedication to upholding the kind and essential work started by Father Nugent in 1881. It is also a time to look forward, and in the same month Normandie Wragg revealed our ambitious and exciting plans to ensure we continue to help the most vulnerable people in our communities. At our Start of the Year conference at the Museum of Liverpool we announced our strategic plan for 2016 – 2020, in the presence of The Lord Mayor and Mayoress, Tony and Ann Conception, the Lord Lieutenant of Liverpool, Dame Lorna Muirhead DBE, and staff and Trustees, led by our Chair, Father Michael Fitzsimons. Our new strategic plan outlines our new mission, vision and values and has been a year in the making. It has involved service users, staff, volunteers and stakeholders across the organisation in consultation to develop not just ideas and rhetoric, but real missions and values aimed at improving people’s lives. The consultation helped us to define our vision: To be an entirely dignified & outstanding organisation by 2020. This ambitious vision is delivered through a set of common values which will form the foundation of our work. The conference was the first step in making our aims a reality, giving us the confidence in our ambitions and committing ourselves to delivering for our people. This commitment reaches across our relationships with parishes within the Archdiocese, and relates directly to our faith based origins within the Catholic Social Teachings including; human dignity, community & participation, peace and reconciliation, care for creation and dignity in work. We hope you will join us on our journey to create a fairer and more equal society for everyone, create better lives for the people who need us and be the voice of the voiceless and an employer of choice.
Fundraising News Global Scouse Day
Merseyside Young Professionals
One of our Charity Partners, Carringtons Catering supported Epsy on Global Scouse Day (February 28) with donations of tasty pans of Scouse!
A staggering £8,743.47 has been raised by the Merseyside Young Professionals Charity Ball which was held in October 2015 towards the introduction of a radio station at Epsy.
Director of Carringtons Catering, Helen Wynn, said: “With Global Scouse Day events taking place across the city, we wanted to mark the Liverpool-centric occasion by giving something back to the community. “
The radio station will help local children who attend the centre’s after school and school holiday sessions to build confidence, engage with the wider community and develop media skills that will stand them in good stead for the future.
Instead of adding the popular dish to our menus, we decided to make up a number of pans of the city’s renowned Scouse to take down to the inspiring initiative. We wanted to provide the culinary homemade treat to allow everybody who uses its services to enjoy a delicious bowl of the famous stew. “We have served up an exclusive recipe, devised and cooked up by our very own Master Chef of Great Britain Darren Wynn and his culinary team. The tasty dish was made with nostalgic ingredients providing the inimitable taste of home.” Many thanks to Helen and Darren and everyone at Carringtons Catering for continuing to support many of Nugent Care’s projects.
Jennifer Christian-Campbell from Quilter Cheviot Liverpool, a wealth management firm and one of the organisers of the fundraising ball, said, “It is fantastic to see the funds raised by the Merseyside Young Professionals Ball put to such good use and to witness for myself how the donation will make a positive impact on the children who attend Epsy.” Everyone at Nugent Care and especially Epsy is truly appreciative of this amazing support and fantastic donation towards Radio Epsy.
