When Whe n I saw Incepti Inception ion n att the th movies, I didn’t fully follow the plot. I’m embarrassed to admit I was that really annoying person that nattered on throughout the flick. “What happened then? Who’s he again? Why is she there? I don’t get it...” Without the benefit of a remote control to pause and rewind, I walked out feeling a bit confused - but I know I liked the film, and I want to watch it again in the comfort of my own lounge room so I can fully appreciate its brilliance! That’s why Inception topped my Christmas wish list, along with the spy thriller Salt starring Angelina Jolie, and The Twilight

Saga: Ecl Saga: Eclips ipse e (g (go o team t Edward!!) Eclipse In music releases, it doesn’t get much more exciting than MICHAEL, the new posthumous album from the King of Pop. Eighteen months after his death, MJ continues to be one of the biggest music acts on the planet - although this release, predictably, is not without controversy. Some family member’s are claiming that the vocal’s aren’t genuine, while Jackson’s estate says they’ve engaged sound experts who have deemed the voice recordings to be Jackson’s. Either way, one things for sure: with this new album, the filmclip boxset Vision, and a new Jackson dance game, there’s plenty of MJ love doing the rounds this silly season!

ION DiCaprio had taken on a lead role in a sci-fi movie. “I’ve never done a film even in the science fiction genre, so for me it was kind of important to have characters that, even though they go into these different stages of the dreamscape, they’re very grounded in an emotional reality,” DiCaprio explains. “My character has a very specific cathartic journey that he goes on in this film, to come to terms with his past… We spent three months just talking about this film, we had lots of discussions about the intricacies of the plot and how we really combined so many story structures together. And (Nolan) was very specific about saying, ‘I don’t want to underestimate the audience – I want to challenge them.’ I think he pulled it off with flying colours.” While DiCaprio admits that Inception is a difficult film to explain or categorise, he also likes “that this film is shrouded in a little bit of mystery.” “It’s a thinking person’s film,” he says. “People extract their own logic from it and have their own interpretation of it, and those are the types of films that I’d like to be a part of more often.”

GOING THE DISTANCE DREW BARRYM BARRYMORE MORE AND JUSTIN LONG DISPLAY GENUINE GEN NUINE CHEMISTRY IN GOING THE DISTANCE, A QUIRKY, RELATABLE COMEDY ABOUT A COUPLE WHO STRUGGLE TO MAINTAIN A LONG-DISTANCE ROMANCE BETWEEN NYC AND SAN FRANCISCO. The real life on-again/off-again couple had one huge advantage going into this film: no awkward make-out sessions on screen. “I was lucky, because Justin is a good kisser,” Barrymore reveals, at a press conference promoting the film. “I was like, ‘Phew! Thank God!’ It’s the worst when you’re kissing someone who’s not a good kisser, and you’re trying to make it look good –

Negotiating different time zones, missing special occasions and clocking up expensive frequent flier points are just some of the challenges the newly loved-up couple face. “I think the fiscal realities of both the characters play a large part, and it was nice to see that played out,” Long says. “That’s something that a lot of people, especially now, can relate to. There are so many things that you take for granted when you enter into a long distance relationship, chief among them being the logistics of just getting from point A to B, and what is involved with that.” Far from being a dreary “recession romance”, however, the film maintains an upbeat tone. “I feel like I

The Simpsons Season 13 TV’s favourite dysfunctional family is back with the release of The Simpsons season 13. Kicking off the series is the annual Halloween episode,

Tree House of Horror, which this year sees Homer become “Death”, while a computer develops a crush on Marge, and Springfield Elementary is turned into a Harry Potter-style school for budding wizards. The town of Springfield faces several dilemmas this season, including figuring out what to do after they are named the fattest town. Also, when the Church of Springfield is feeling the financial pinch, they decide to rent out wall space in order to generate funds, but it leaves the congregation feeling there is no place to escape advertising. As a family, the Simpsons struggle through their usual dramas: Bart is up to his usual mischief, but this time goes one step too far by taking a joy ride in a police car. The judge decides to punish both Bart and Homer, and has the pair tethered to each other. Meanwhile, when a Monopoly game goes it’s in its thirteenth

MICHA IT’S A SHAME THAT MICHAEL JACKSON ISN’T HERE NOW TO SEE HOW MUCH THE WORLD TRULY APPRECIATED HIS MUSIC. THIS MONTH, 18 MONTHS AFTER THE KING OF POP PASSED AWAY, A NEW ALBUM OF PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED AND UNHEARD MATERIAL IS REVEALED, WITH THE BLESSING OF HIS ESTATE. In the last few years of his life, it was often reported that Michael Jackson had been working on songs for his next album. Until now, we haven’t heard any new material from him since 2001’s Invincible, which sold more than 13 million copies worldwide. Since his death on June 25 last year, his

SHREK FOREVER AFTER (OUT NOW) Shrek and company are back for one last time, but all is not well in the land of Happily Ever After. Shrek (voiced, as always, by Mike Myers) has tired of his new domestic duties and is frustrated by his out-of-control brood. In a moment of weakness, Shrek meets with Rumpelstiltskin and is tricked into wishing himself into non-existence. As a result, Shrek finds himself in an alternate reality where Donkey, Puss in Boots and, most importantly, Fiona, have no idea who he is.

THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE (JANUARY 12) Nicolas Cage plays Balthazar Blake, a centuries-old sorcerer who has been searching for an appropriately talented heir since the days of Merlin. He finds such a person in 10-year-old New Yorker Dave Stutler who comes to his attention when he visits the old sorcerer’s mysterious occult shop where a magical incident occurs. A decade later, the pair are reunited and Dave agrees to become the sorcerer’s apprentice in order to fight the evil he mistakenly released 10 years ago.

GOING THE DISTANCE (FEBRUARY 2) Drew Barrymore and Justin Long breath new life into the tried and tested longdistance romantic comedy model. Barrymore plays 31-year-old Erin who meets struggling record company exec Garret (Long) when she moves to New York City for a summer internship. All is peachey as the pair share a carefree existence, until Erin flies back home to San Francisco and reality sets in. The couple soon discover they want more than awkward 4am phone sex, but do they have the courage to go after it?

THE KARATE KID (DECEMBER 8) Jaden Smith, aka Will Smith Jnr., steps into the lead role of this 1980s classic, and while the new script deviates quite a lot from the original, the core formula remains the same. Jackie Chan is perfectly cast as mentor Mr Han, who helps Dre (Smith) get in touch with his inner martial artist when the boy undertakes a difficult move from the US to China. Perhaps a little old-fashioned in its approach to dealing with bullies, it presents the idea that a bully is much like a balloon – pop it hard enough and it will go away.

SALT (DECEMBER 22) There’s something completely irresistible about Angelina Jolie as a sexy super spy, and as CIA agent Evelyn Salt, that’s exactly what she is. However, when Salt is accused of being a double agent for the Russian government, she quickly becomes target number-one for her former employer. With Jolie playing coy throughout, we’re kept guessing to the truth and director Phillip Noyce keeps our emotions on a knife edge as our allegiances shift from minute to minute.

DESPICABLE ME (JANUARY 6) It’s not easy being bad. At least that’s what super villain Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) discovers when he goes up against an evil new upstart on his latest conquest to steal the moon. To complicate things further, the usually cold-hearted Gru encounters three adorable orphans who distract the mad professor from directing his army of loyal minions. This is an excellent family animation that will delight the kids while throwing an entertaining wink at parents.

NOT FINAL ARTWORK

TOMORROW WHEN THE WAR BEGAN (DECEMBER 30) their return – and the troupe The film adaptation of one of young Aussie actors do of Australia’s most popular an excellent job endearing youth novels was watched us to their characters. The script sticks close to the original novel – a group of teens head out into the mountains for an unsupervised camping trip only to discover that their town has fallen victim to foreign invaders on

LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS: THE OWLS OF GA’HOOLE (FEBRUARY 2) This Australian-produced animation presents a stunningly detailed fantasy world that sits comfortably in the league of Avatar. Owl society is in turmoil as loving owl families are beset upon by power-hungry bands of rouge owls. When two young brothers fall out of their family tree, they are recruited into this evil army, until one brother escapes to seek out the legendary Guardians who hold the power to defeat the army and return the forest to its natural order.

SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD (DECEMBER 15) None could play Scott Pilgrim quite as well as hipto-be-square Michael Cera. Pilgrim is a 23-year-old indie bass player who is dating an intense, obsessive 17-year-old known as Knives. But when he falls head-over-heels with a skater chick he must dump Knives – easier said than done – to be with his dream girl. But it doesn’t end there. In order to live happily ever after, Pilgrim must battle with his new girl’s seven evil exboyfriends. This has become a cult hit for good reason.

INCEPTION

050

WORDS Shane Conroy

With more twists and turns than the ultimate rollercoaster, this is a film you’ll want to watch several times. There are a few reasons for this – Leonardo DiCaprio delivers a top-shelf performance, Joseph Gordon-Levitt unveils himself as a future Oscar winner and Ellen Page rocks her most mature role to date. But the main reason you’ll be tuning in multiple times is to untangle the many plot twists as the protagonists infiltrate their subjects’ dreams and explore multiple levels of their subconscious while building new dreamscapes. The surprise ending is open for interpretation and will cause many heated dinner-table arguments. (DECEMBER 8)

[MUSIC]

RY CUMING: RY CUMING (JANUARY 28) The self-titled debut release from Australian singer/ songwriter and guitarist, Ry Cuming, signals big things in store for this rising young star. You can hear the Jeff Buckley influence that Cuming sites as his inspiration in his stripped back, lyrical sound. An avid surfer, Cuming was discovered by LA producers strumming in the corridor of a hotel in Costa Rica. Think Jeff Buckley meets Jack Johnson and you’re halfway there.

CIARA: BASIC INSTINCT (DECEMBER 14) The urban princess has gone big for her fourth studio release. Lead single “Ride” features Ludacris and a very sexy groove, while tracks such as “Speechless“ and “Gimmie Dat” show a marked return to her R&B roots. Originally due for an August release, the album was pushed back to drop just before Christmas, but it is well worth the wait as we find Ciara in close to careerbest form with a new energy that is quite irrespirable.

DAFT PUNK: TRON LEGACY SOUNDTRACK (DECEMBER 8) It’s not often that anticipation for a movie soundtrack outweighs that for the actual film, but many music fans are more interested in Daft Punk’s backing tunes than Disney’s futuristic companion piece to the classic 1982 original. The French duo’s electro sound is the perfect fit for the movie, and producers gave the band a 100-piece orchestra to work with – the result is an incredibly rich score that allows Daft Punk’s electro talents to shine like never before.

PEARL JAM: LIVE ON TEN LEGS (JANUARY 21) There’s nothing like celebrating the 20th anniversary of your favourite teenage years band to make you feel old, but that’s exactly what Pearl Jam fans are facing. Essentially a greatest hits albums, the 18 tracks span seven years of world-wide wanderings, culminating in 2010’s epic Hyde Park show in London. Monster hits such as “Alive” and “I Am Mine” join lesser-known tracks such as “World Wide Suicide” and “Spin the Black Circle”.

THE POTBELLEEZ: DESTINATION NOW (JANUARY 28) The Potbelleez debut dance release in 2008 made the Sydney-based group an overnight success story as hit singles “Don’t Hold Back” and “Are You With Me” tore up the charts. Now they’re back with a second album that retains their high-energy club sound, but teams it with anthem-style tracks that will be huge on the summer festival circuit. The lead single is “Hello” – you’ll be hearing its incredibly catchy chorus at every party of the summer.

JOHN WILLIAMSON: JOHN WILLIAMSON LIVE (JANUARY 14 After three ARIA Awards, 24 Golden Guitars, and more than four million albums sold, true blue country icon John Williamson reminds us why he is considered one of the industry’s best live performers. His performances at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the Rugby World Cup, and Sir Donald Bradman’s memorial are now part of history, and further evidence of his rare gift of switching from a cheeky wink to a soulful ballad to a fist-pumping anthem as quickly as you can say ‘fair dinkum’. KERI HILSON: NO BOYS (OUT NOW) In her 2009 debut, In a Perfect World, Keri Hilson brought a touch of soul into the pop world, and with her highly anticipated follow-up album dropping this month, we’re in for another dose of the sex kitten with a brain. “Pretty Girl Rock” produced by Ne-Yo is a war-cry for women to put divisive jealousy behind them and embrace their collective beauty, while “Buyou” takes a shot at men who take women for granted. SLIM DUSTY: THE VERY BEST OF SLIM DUSTY (GOLD LABEL EDITION) (JANUARY 14) He’s the man who gave us “The Pub With No Beer” among countless other country hits that spanned an incredible 60-year career before his death in 2003. He released his first album in 1945, and around five million album sales later, we are offered another taste of his greatness. Along with “The Pub With No Beer”, classic hits “Duncan”, “G’day, G’day”, “Cunnamulla Fella” and a stirring rendition of “Waltzing Matilda” are all featured.

PITBULL: PLANET PIT

WORDS Shane Conroy

Pitbull’s stellar sixth studio album has a cameo line-up that reads like an MTV Music Video Awards guest list. Akon, Skakira and Enrique Iglesias all lend their vocals to the record, while David Guettra, Pharrell and Rodney Jerkins all lay down beats on the album. Pit has said that he wants every song on the album to be a hit single, and the lead single, “Hey Baby (Drop it to the Floor)” featuring T-Pain is a good start as it tears up dance clubs around the world. Meanwhile, Pit has big plans of touring South America with the Black Eyed Peas and linking with Iglesias for a segment of his world tour. (OUT NOW)

[ BLU-RAY]

PSYCHO 50TH ANNIVERSARY (OUT NOW) Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece changed the film industry forever. Now, 50 years later, it’s time to rediscover the penultimate horror flick. It may be a long way from the gore of the Saw franchise, but Hitchcock employs moodbuilding music, tensionfilled cinematography and supreme characterisation to build scares that don’t need the in-your-face gore of modern special effects. Anthony Perkins plays unhinged motel owner Norman Bates who is clinging

to a mummy’s boy complex that spells doom for one of his guests. This edition is jammed with enough special features to impress even the most strident film buff, including a feature-length making-of documentary, one of Hitchcock’s rare short films and original storyboards of the infamous shower scene.

SE7EN (OUT NOW) The high-definition treatment is glaringly obvious in this moody thriller as blu-ray technology shines in the dark corners and shadowy frames that build the atmosphere of this edge-of-your-seat production. Brad Pitt plays a hot-shot rookie cop who is thrown into the investigation of a string of grizzly murders that are themed around the biblical seven deadly sins. Morgan Freeman is at his best as Pitt’s older, wiser partner who clashes with the balls-out attitude of the younger man.

SCENT OF A WOMAN (OUT NOW) We’ve seen plenty of Al Pacino as gangster and grumpy cop, but this 1992 classic drama demonstrates Pacino’s incredible range. He won his first Best Actor Oscar for his role as blind retired Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade. Bitter and lonely, Slade employs high school student Charles Simms (a very young Chris O’Donnell) as a personal assistant for a Thanksgiving weekend in New York City. Each man learns from the other as they discover more about life and how to live it.

THE HOLIDAY (OUT NOW) The Holiday proves that love does not stop at the airport. Amanda (Cameron Diaz) is an American hottie and Iris (Kate Winslet) is an English lass who are both feeling the effects of bad breakups. They each respond to a house-swapping ad and trade lives, and homes, for a much-needed holiday escape. However, one lady’s trash is another’s treasure as Iris falls for a friend of Amanda’s in the form of Jack Black, and Amanda succumbs to the charms of Iris’ charming brother (Jude Law).

THE SIMPSONS: SEASON 13 (OUT NOW) It’s a case of lucky 13 for Springfield’s first family as they present another ripper of a season. Lisa is on track to attending her snooty dream school, that is if her genes don’t kick in first. When Mr Burns discovers he only has a few weeks to live, the Simpsons take him in. Bart is arrested for stealing Chief Wiggum’s police car and is tethered to Homer as punishment. And Marge declares a health war when Springfield is declared ‘the fattest town on earth’.

REQUIEM FOR A DREAM (OUT NOW) This is a profoundly touching film about the danger of addiction – to illegal and legal substances. Desperate to lose weight for an upcoming television appearance but unable to stick to a healthy diet, widow Sarah Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn) gets hooked on diet pills. Meanwhile, her son Harry (Jared Leto) sets up a drug dealing operation with his best friend, Tyrone (Marlon Wayons). However their desire to test the merchandise develops into a full-blown drug addiction.

NOTTING HILL (OUT NOW) This is more than a cookiecutter romantic comedy. Sure, there is plenty of romance and a good share of laughs, but co-stars Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant also have a point to make about the cult of celebrity. Grant plays a humble travel book shop owner who encounters movie star Roberts by chance. That chance meeting develops into a romantic entanglement, but when Robert’s character is caught by the paparazzi she freaks out and retreats to her protected celebrity world.

TWILIGHT ZONE: THE ORIGINAL SERIES SEASON 1 (DECEMBER 8) It was a smash hit in 1959 and now you can discover the series that sparked the sci-fi revolution. All 36 episodes of the weird and wonderful first season are included here – presented in high definition for the first time ever. See the late, great Burgess Meredith as the last man standing after a nuclear blast, Anne Francis as a department store shopper who’s haunted by mannequins, and the season finale that leaves a writer to deal with his fictional characters coming to life.

SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE (OUT NOW) Many films have been inspired by the work of William Shakespeare, but few have peeked inside his life. By no means a factual documentary, this awardwinning film imaginatively suggests that the playwright found inspiration for his famous Romeo and Juliet in his own love life. William (Joseph Fiennes) is in love with Viola (Gwyneth Paltrow), however, he’s unaware that his lady love, in a desperate attempt to be part of the male-only theatre, disguises herself as a man and becomes male confidant to love-struck William.

POWDERFINGER SUNSETS TOUR WORDS Shane Conroy

After two decades of making beautiful music together, Powderfinger are finally calling it a day. This documentary by the acclaimed filmmaker Gregor Jordon, the man behind Two Hands and Ned Kelly, goes on the road with the band on their final national tour. Watch all the on-stage action in stunning high definition, then go behind the scenes for an intimate insight into the personalities behind one of Australia’s most successful rock bands. This is a joyful – and sometimes emotional – farewell to the band who has played the soundtrack to our lives. (OUT NOW)

GOD OF WAR: GHOST OF SPARTA If you ever wanted to know just how powerful a handheld can be, take a look at Ghost of Sparta - it has graphics and gameplay that match most full console experiences. Forming a narrative bridge between God of War 1 and 2, this game sees Kratos pursue his long lost brother Deimos. Great new weapons and slick combat make this the PSP’s best action title.

DANCE CENTRAL XBOX 360 Made by the same brains who created Guitar Hero, Dance Central is without question the best of Kinect’s launch games. Using the device’s amazing technology, the game takes an accurate reading of your body and monitors how you move as you bust out the dance moves shown on screen, scoring your effort. It works amazingly well, and is buoyed by a great tracklist.

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS - PART 1 PS3, 360, WII, DS, PC There has been a game for each of the Harry Potter films and much like the quality of the movies, the visuals and sense of freedom have improved dramatically with each iteration. It will come as no surprise that at the business end of the series, combat takes centre stage, although there is some stealth based gameplay, too. Kinect owners can make gestures to cast spells, which is particularly cool. DEF JAM RAPSTAR PS3, 360, WII There are a number of cool karaoke games out there, but very few provide a fun experience for hip-hop fans. Def Jam Rapstar, however, focuses on just that with a range of modes designed to test out your rapping ability. The massive tracklist is star-studded, including the likes of Snoop Dog, Dr. Dre, Public Enemy, Kayne West, Salt ‘n’ Pepa, Wu Tang Clan, Outkast, Diddy, 50 Cent and 2 Pac.

EPIC MICKEY WII This game is set to put Mickey Mouse back into the spotlight in a big way. You play a devious, more sinister Mickey, traversing the Disney landscapes with a magic paintbrush wiping out or creating the world as you see fit. Epic Mickey mixes up the open-world platforming with combat, RPG elements and sidescrolling level transitions, plus it looks a treat. The Mouse is back!

WORLD OF WARCRAFT: CATACLYSM PC The greatest MMORPG of them all receives its third expansion pack and boy does it bring a lot to the table. This includes a complete visual reworking of much of the game’s areas, as well as new story-focused quests. The level cap increases by five to 85, and brings with it a stack of new dungeons to tackle. There are also two new races in the Goblins (Horde) and Worgen (Alliance). Plenty for fans of all levels.

[GADGETS] BLACKBERRY TORCH 9800 EVOLUTION, BABY! One of the few brands to stand toe-to-toe with the iPhone, the Blackberry remains a popular choice amongst business men and women. The brilliant new Torch 9800, however, should break it out into the wider community. The intriguing design has a slide-out screen which reveals a full QWERTY keyboard. Despite our initial concerns that this approach might destabilise the handset, it’s brilliantly

ASUS G73 3D NOTEBOOK REPUBLIC OF GAMERS Now here is an impressive device. A LED 17” gaming tiered notebook that provides 3D action! This is the first of its kind anywhere in the world, and it combines visual guru Nvidia’s Fermi-based GTX 460M graphics engine with the Nvidia 3D Vision technology to provide the 3D effect. It’s all fully HD,

designed and works a treat. When slid-out, the screen feels secure and the phone remains well weighted in your hands. The touchscreen is super responsive too, and nice and bright: plus, it comes with the new Blackberry OS, which features bright and colourful menus in place of the drab textbased options of the previous models. Socialites will enjoy the five megapixel camera and the speed in which it processes photos. In fact, this whole device is fast, flexible and fun and an excellent evolution for the brand. Check it out!

to have it charged up as well, but there is no denying its benefits when on long haul flights, or away from power sources (such as camping). A little LED meter shows you how much you’ve got in the tank, so you shouldn’t be caught out and at $89.95 RRP it is not a bank buster. You never need be lost and helpless again!

SONY BRAVIA NX810 NEW DIMENSION Sony has been very active in pushing 3D technology, especially via its PlayStation console, but also with Bluray. So it has been odd then that their signature Bravia TVs have been a little late coming to the party. The NX810 fixes this, being 3D ready just in time for the first run of Blu-ray films that make use of the extra dimension. The 55” screen runs at a fantastic 200MHz and is LED backlit, offering some extremely impressive visual quality aided by

Bravia Engine 3 and MotionFlow Pro technology. A less known but equally impressive feature is IPTV support, for video and TV that comes from the internet. This looks a treat and the available content here is the best in the marketplace: you’ll really be ahead of the curve on this one as we expect IPTV to boom through this decade. We’re disappointed that some of the optional extras (like a stand)

FOXTEL ON XBOX MULTI-TASKING No doubt you are aware of the Xbox 360, Microsoft’s successful video game console. While the device is already considered a multimedia hub thanks to its ability to play movies, music, photos and connect to the internet, it will now be swelling its services by turning into a Foxtel box. Subscribers to the Xbox 360 Live service will be able

to sign-up to Foxtel and watch channels through the console, streamed across the net. The Getting Started pack costs $20 a month, and offers channels like FOX8, MTV, Nickelodeon, Channel [V], LifeStyle YOU, Discovery, National Geographic, TV1, SKY NEWS, FOX Sports News and CNN. There are

then additional channels (30 in total) that can be added via focused Sport, Entertainment and Movie packs starting at $10. Catch-up TV is also supported, as is Foxtel on Demand (new release films being $5.95). It works well, and is integrated seamlessly into the Xbox OS giving the console a whole new dimension.

too, supporting DirectX11, 1080p resolution and HDMI 1.4 output, which allows the notebook to link up to a big TV without losing quality, or the effect. It’s a pretty mean gaming machine, sporting 1.5GB GDDR5 video memory, a 500GB hard-drive, 8GB of RAM and a design that is ergonomically designed to facilitate long periods of use. Furthermore, it features a Blu-ray writer and player, which means you can use it to watch Blu-ray films in 3D, too. The necessary glasses are included, so if you are looking for a top of the line, 3D gaming/ multimedia device that fits in your backpack, the G73 is difficult to look past at $2,999 RRP.

JUST MOBILE GUM PLUS PP-168 VERY HANDY We all love our smartphones: we all hate it when they burn through their battery power before we’re back in the comfort of our homes. It almost makes you feel lost and helpless. This handy little device looks to get around this problem. Designed for the iPhone, but capable of recharging any USB tied phone, it holds around two additional charges worth of power. It is a little bigger than we would have liked - about two-thirds the size of the phone itself - and you will have to remember
