Study Room Basement of the Main Library If you want a quiet place to study, the study room is your best choice. There is an unique lamp on each seat to accompany you while reading.

Those lamps are genuine antiques from the Japanese colonial period.

Open Shelf Area of the Koo Chen-Fu Memorial Library This library is designed by the world-renowned Japanese architect Mr. Toyo Ito. There is a beautiful open shelf area designed like a forest library with 88 irregularly distributed tree-like pillars. The 130 pieces skylights of all shapes and sizes let the sunlight fill in allaround.

Sunshine Corner 2F of the Medical Library Bathed in sunshine, the terrace seats symbolize freedom.

The projection screen and movable furniture make this space suitable for brainstorming.

Intercampus Loan Service This service provides books delivery between NTU campuses. Through the online request, you may request books from a library at other campus without going there for picking them up. The average turnaround time for processing and delivering books is in 3 working days.

Closed Stacks Retrieval Services If the needed materials are in the closed stacks, please submit your request online. You will be notified by Email when the requested item is retrieved and ready for you to pick up. ＊ For more information, please visit http://www.lib.ntu.edu.tw/en/node/3028

Online Reserves You may request items from the library's online catalog that have already been checked out.

Once the requested items are returned, you will be notified by email. You can pick up your reserves at the designated location. All requested items will be held for 5 days.

Request Books from the ASRS Service Center You can go to the ASRS Service Center to request on-site and get the item within 2 minutes.

However, you may also reserve it via the library's online catalog and will be notified by Email once it's ready for picking up at the designated location. ＊ For more information, please visit http://www.lib.ntu.edu.tw/en/node/3377

Online Renewal You can renew items through your online library account before the due date. Please click on

〔 Log in My Library〕and either select the items you wish to renew or click on 〔Renew All〕 at the top. This will renew all items providing they can be renewed.

Self-Checkout You can check out books by yourself on the 1st, 2nd and 4th floors of the Main Library. The machines are also located in the Medical Library and the Koo Chen-Fu Memorial Library.

Book Sterilizer Book Sterilizers are on the 1st, 2nd and 4th floors of the Main Library, and are also located in the Medical Library and the Koo Chen-Fu Memorial Library.

It takes only 30 seconds to kill the germs on both the covers and the pages inside the books.

Returns You can return the books at the Main Library, the Medical Library, the Koo Chen-Fu Memorial Library, the ASRS Service Center and all departmental libraries regardless of the original location among them.

At your convenience, use the outside book drops located at the Main Library, the Medical Library and the Koo Chen-Fu Memorial Library when the libraries are closed. Please note the actual return date will be the next day after dropping the books.

Library and the Medical Library. You can print or email a return receipt after returning your borrowed items. Please return the audio-visual materials to the original borrowing counter.

Viewing Circulation Record You may view your circulation record by clicking on〔 Log in My Library〕with your NTU Email Account. If the page is displayed in Chinese, click the button with your name to switch it to English.

Email Notification Email notification is definitely a convenient service for you. You will receive the following notices by NTU Email: (1) Courtesy Notice, (2) Overdue Notice, (3) Hold Pickup Notice, (4) Hold Cancellation Notice, and (5) Recall Notice.

Borrowing from Other Libraries (Interlibrary Loan Service)

You can use JADE service to request journal articles or borrow books through NDDS from other libraries. Moreover, you can apply for an “Interlibrary Loan Card” at the Service Counter of the Main Library or the Medical Library, which enables the card holder to borrow materials from other libraries personally. ＊ Before making a request from Interlibrary Loan service, please check the NTU Library online catalog to make sure the items are not NTU libraries' holdings. ＊ For more information, please visit 〔Service〕4〔Interlibrary Loan Service〕on the website of the NTU library.

Tri-Library Loan Service National Taiwan University, National Taiwan Normal University, and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology have introduced the Tri-Library Loan Service, so that eligible patrons may use their faculty/staff/student IDs to borrow books from all three libraries. ＊ For more information, please visit https://www.lib.ntu.edu.tw/en/node/3069

NTU Mobile Library Card In addition to using a physical card, you can also use a mobile library card to enter and exit the library, as well as to check out books. Download the " NTU Library APP " with your mobile device, log in with your NTU Email Account or library account, and click the "Mobile Library Card" icon to get a QR code. Scan the QR code to enter and exit the library or borrow books.

Search Tips: Library Catalog You can use the Library Catalog to search for books, journals, newspapers, audio-visual materials, videos, maps, and more.

How to Locate a Book?

Call Number ─

It indicates the location of the item.

Location ─ It shows on which floor this item is shelved. “Available” means that this item can be found on the shelf. "Out of library" means the item is already checked out by another user, and you may request it online. ＊ Please sign in to reserve the

checked-out items.

The call number on the book spine acts like the book's add ress on the library 's shelves or sta cks.

How to Locate Journals?

"Available Online" means there is an electronic edition of the journal.

Click the name of the database, you can link to its title and read the full-text directly. Please note the range of journals accessible in the bibliography.

Discovery System The Discovery System, which is also called System for Library Information Management (SLIM), is a one-stop retrieval system for large amounts of print and online content, including books, ebooks, articles, book reviews, videos, and more.

The SLIM provides a Google-like search engine which is fast in retrieving library's resources.

Users can easily access the origin of the specific holding and refine the retrieval strategy by the filters.

Finding Course Reserves Use Advanced Search and select "Course Reserves" to limit your search by the name of the course or the instructor.

Course Reserves consist primarily of books and audiovisual materials that have been requested by faculty for the use of their students. All reserve books are kept at the Course Reserves Area on 3F of the Main Library, and the course reserve audio-visual materials are located on 1F, the Digital Media Commons. All Course Reserves are for inlibrary use only.

Course Reserves are item s in high demand for a particular course. Eac h item of Course Reserv es is given a unique number corresponding to a spe cific course and placed in the Course Reserves Are a.

Using Databases You can use databases to search for journal articles, newspapers, conference articles, e-book chapters, and other digital resources by specific subject. Most databases contain not only full-text documents but also various subject e-resources, such as music (e.g., Naxos Music Library) and general knowledge (e.g., Encyclopedia Britannica Online).

Network Connection Services Campus Network Most e-resources can be accessed within the campus network (IP 140.112.*.*), but there is still online usage restriction on some of them. For example, “Web edition with 5 concurrent users” means only 5 people can use the resources at the same time. You can find the access information on 〔Search & Find〕4〔E-Resource〕4〔Databases〕.

Questions

How to set up the internet connection in the library?

There are two wireless networks: “NTU” and “ntu_peap”. You can choose either of them, and enter your NTU Email account and password to set up the internet connection. ＊ For more information, please visit http://www.lib.ntu.edu.tw/en/node/807

Are NTU faculty, staff, and students allowed to borrow books from all branches and departmental libraries?

YES! People with above identities are welcome to borrow or return books at all NTU Library system, including the Main Library, the Medical Library, the Koo Chen-Fu Memorial Library, the ASRS Service Center and all departmental libraries.

What should I do when borrowed items are overdue?

If you have overdue materials, your own borrowing privileges will be locked. Please return them immediately and pay the overdue fines: (1) General materials are fined at the rate of NT$ 5 each item per day.

(2) Overnight borrowed materials are fined at the rate of NT$ 5 each item per hour.

(3) Multimedia materials are fined at the rate of NT$ 30 each item per day.

Overdue materials are subject to late fees and borrowers are subject to the suspension of their borrowing privileges.

The charges will be accumulated until the items are returned, so please return or renew your materials before the due date.

What should I do if I have lost a book?

Please report to the library immediately and complete the compensation procedures to avoid additional overdue fines. For more information, please refer to the replacement

procedures of the library loan policy. You can visit〔Services〕4〔Readers Services〕4 〔Loan Policy〕.

How do I pay for the overdue fines or compensation fees ?

You can always complete the payments onsite at the Service Counter with cash, EasyCard, LINE Pay, or JKOPAY. Also, you may use E-payment services on the Library website or NTU Library App. For further information, please visit https://www.lib.ntu.edu.tw/en/node/4154.

Why is my recall/hold request rejected?

For the following reasons: You may request a book that is in library-use only.

Your requests are reached the maximum limits.

You may have overdue books, unpaid fines, or replacement fees on your record.

Online requests are accepted only when a book has been checked out by another patron, is in the process of being purchased, or is being cataloged.

Why can’t I find a book on the shelf ?

When you can’t find a book after looking it up on the bookshelf, one or more of the following reasons might apply: Someone borrowed it.

Another patron is currently using the book, or the book has not been placed back on the shelf.

Placed on the wrong shelf.

Displayed on the “New Arrivals” Area on the 2nd/4th floor or in the book exhibition.

Missing.

Withdrawal or Removed from the shelf.

Where is the book?

Please don’t hesitate to ask for help at the 1F Service Counter.

Why can’t I find a journal on the shelf?

This may be due to one or more of the following reasons: Another patron is reading it or hasn’t returned it to the shelf.

Placed on the wrong shelf.

The journal was sent out for binding.

The name of the journal has been changed.

Unbound and bound periodicals are located on separate floors.

Please don’t hesitate to ask for help at the 1F Service Counter.

How can I recommend a book for the library to purchase?

Please click on〔Research Support〕4〔Books Recommendation〕to log in the Book Recommendation System on the library website.

Your recommendation will be evaluated according to the library collection development principles. Books on general subjects will be handled by the library and those on specific ones will be referred to the related departments for evaluation and purchase.

Where to scan or photocopy those books limited for use in the library?

Copy machines are available on each floor in the Main Library. Users can buy a copy card at the Copy Center on B1 or the card vending machines on each floor of the Main Library.

Printing service and scanning service are available respectively on the 1st , 3rd and 4th floors and the 2nd , 3rd and 5th floors. The scanner is for NTU library collections only. Please notice fair use and respect the intellectual property rights.
