Why do we go to University AS MANY OPT TO CONTINUE WITH HIGHER EDUCATION, AND HIGH SKILLED PROFESSION FACE SATURATION IN JORDAN, IT MAY BE TIME TO ASK WHY WE GO TO UNIVERSITY IN THE FIRST PLACE? By Amr Jarajrah University has become an essential part of our educational journey as we currently need, more than ever, to improve our lives and lead our region to a better future. Fortunately, numbers and statistics are on our side when it comes to achieving this goal. The Arab world has been recently witnessing a tremendous decrease in illiteracy rates. In 1970 the percentage of illiterates in the Arab world was over 70%. By 2011 the numbers had drastically declined to below 23% (latest statistics). Although we don’t have any updated statistical evidence that the percentage has declined any further, it’s apparent in our everyday lives. Up until 1953, only 14 public and private universities had been established in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, but now we have over 380 universities which clearly demonstrates the unprecedented interest in pursuing and improving university education in the region, and further emphasizes it’s not neglected or considered a luxury as it once was. For example, in Jordan, over
79% of high school graduates continue their education and join universities. These numbers may vary from one Arab country to another. The progression of the higher education sector has been accompanied by inancial investments. Current expenditure on this sector, according to a recent study published by Al Masah Capital Limited, has reached an average of 3.8 percent of the gross domestic product in Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries – higher than that of many developed nations – and this igure is expected to continue to increase.[1] With all that said, why do most of us go to university? Why do we spend a large sum of our income on it? To answer these questions we’ve talked to the core of the educational system; the students, and their parents to get a glimpse of the bigger picture from their point of view. Why education in general and university education in particula “Interesting, I’ve never thought about it.”
● Anonymous female, 23 “It goes like this: kindergarten, school, and then university. This is the normal cycle that we’ve been raised to follow.” ● Raid George, 21 “I might sound silly but it’s the tradition.” ● Anonymous male, 22 “Our lives were different, living was different, even families are not the same now. We didn’t fear the future but I don’t think the same applies to our kids.” ● Sumaya Salim, 44 “We’ve seen how educated people walked through the streets of our village.” ● Anonymous male, 70 “We want to get our children the best. We want them to live better lives than the ones we lived” ● Faisal Salameh, 52 Education in the light of employment: (or regarding education and employment) “Very important, even though not everyone works in the ield they’ve studied.” ● Ahmad Mhammad, 26 “I think it offers a sense of security. Even though I’m currently unemployed, I feel like I have something to rely on forever. I’ll eventually ind a job and that’s because I
have a degree.” ● Anonymous female, 27 We’re seeing hundreds and thousands of students joining universities and graduating every year. Do you think that affects the calibre of graduates? “Who cares about knowledge, all I want is a better chance of getting a better job.” ● Anonymous male, 23 “From my experience in the market, I noticed that when considering applications for jobs, employers tend to care more about the educational level of the applicant, rather than their practical knowledge. I think this is why we’re getting quantity rather than quality.” ● Tamer, 44 “I’ll ell you a story about an IT guy that we have in our workplace. He’s so good; we wouldn’t survive a day without him. He can ix computers, design posters, and do just about everything. But since we’re working in the public sector, and he doesn’t have a degree, he’s being paid as much as the receptionist that doesn’t properly do her job. If he had a degree in anything, his job and income would’ve been much better.” ● Anonymous female, 37 In some countries of the region, unemployment among university graduates is higher than that among those with nothing more than primary education. What do you think about that? And do you still believe that the normal course of education is
suitable for everyone? “A degree is a degree, whether it’s being used or not. Do you wa me to be unemployed and without a degree?” ● Anonymous male, 23 “People tend to respect educated individuals. We do too, and we want our kids to be respected.” ● Lubna Taha, 39 Eventually, we’ve reached a point where most of us go to university to follow through with the standard pattern; to avoid being a step behind while everyone supposedly moves forward, and to be validated by what’s deemed conventional. Some of the answers to my questions were rather blunt revealing the undeniable fact that a great portion of our students go through the four-, ive- or even the sixyear ordeal for the sake of being a step ahead no matter what the expense is. The idea that many of us spend years going to classes to get a piece of paper declaring that we’ve successfully completed something, we might’ve not wanted in the irst place, is terrifying. THE Anti-Vaxxers By Farah Bani Hani The number of people refusing to vaccinate themselves and their children has surged over the past two decades; although some form of the “Anti-Vaccine movement” has been around for hundreds of years, way before the modern day vaccine was found, the concerning recent rise in the number of people declining vaccines has been attributed to the Internet, and to endorsements made by celebrities and politicians, escalating the degree of inluence the movement has had on the general public. Modern ‘vaccination’ was irst introduced in 1797 by Edward Jenner. His theory of introducing an agent that resembled the actual disease to activate the recipient’s acquired immunity proved successful, and ever since the eradication of Smallpox the world has been in a constant ight against infectious diseases, through extensive funds poured into research and global eradication campaigns. Despite the eradication of smallpox, and the restriction of polio, measles and tetanus, and the multiple studies that support the safety and eficacy of vaccines, “Anti-Vaxxers” contest
the science and refuse to vaccinate their children, causing a rise in some infectious diseases. The movement’s current most infamous argument comes from a now retracted study published in The Lancet, a medical journal,in 1997 by the discredited physician-researcher, Andrew Wakeield. The article suggested a link between the MMR vaccine and autism; the accusations caused a media frenzy and public uproar, resulting in a tug of war, with the scientiic community on one end and outraged parents on the other. The study that was poorly designed and consisted of only 12 subjects has since been debunked, with evidence that the data included in the study was either misreported or manipulated, according to succeeding investigations. Another reason Anti-Vaxxers steer away from vaccines is the fact that some formulas contain Aluminum, Mercury and Formaldehyde, a concern that was considered invalid since the amount of these chemicals present in vaccines are negligible and do not come close to the toxic index; taking Aluminum as an example, it is added

Stephen Hawking: A Brilliant Mind and Everlasting Legacy Stephen William Hawking was an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author, researcher, husband, father, grandfather and an idol. After being diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease at the age of 21; as he given only 2 years to live, he went on to outlive all estimations. Not only did he continue his impending work in the ield of physics, he also, taught us a valuable lesson in humanity. He taught us that being intelligent doesn’t mean being heartless, quite the opposite in fact. Also playing a cardinal role in the tremendous advances we have been witnessing in the ight against the stigma of disability. His intellect and zeal for life inspired us all to be a little more curious, hardworking, and compassionate. Known for his wicked sense of humor, intertwined beautifully with insightful intelligence, his journey is one of the most indomitable examples of triumph, in which the human spirit is always the hero.

YULC Recap
By Amr Jarajrah
A fresh perspective, that’s what we’re used to getting from YU-LC, with each project they prove that experience and professionalism isn’t all about time, but it’s more about passion and commitment to excellence, rising up to the challenges and most importantly quality outcomes, with tens of remarkable projects, steps and events, YU-Lc never fails to disappoint. The Personal Hygiene Project (Khayzoran Qatawneh) Health promotion, especially hygiene, is an important concept that needs to be implemented in all the sectors of our community amongst all age groups, it starts with health promotion programs then transitions into health education lectures that reach children, their families, school nurses and different educational personnel. In medicine and everyday life, hygiene practices are used as preventative measures to reduce the incidence and spreadability of so many diseases, That exactly was the motive behind the proj-
ect, implementing the idea of how important personal hygiene and cleanliness are and how important it is to reach the goal of a healthy life. Reach For The Stars (Yussuf Abuelhaija’) Reach For The Stars is a project that aims to inform and give medical students an idea about the steps and main examinations they need to go through in order to pursue their professional career and residency in certain countries. It will be done through two main steps, six months apart to maximize the impact and reach as many interested students as possible, each step will consist of ive days in which there will be ive different speakers to talk about and discuss ive available medical licensing examinations, including the Jordanian licensing criteria.

own time to discuss their experiences in the ield, and how they utilize their training and knowledge in order to diagnose cases.
The project’s primary focus will be on gathering medical students and practitioners under one roof to exchange knowledge and medical experiences. We’re hoping to continue holding more discussions, involve more students and bring more well-known Jordanian names in the ield of medicine and hopefully from all over the globe to our platform.
Narcotics are a threatening danger to our society, especially with the alarmingly growing rates of drug abusers in our region. This project aims to shed the light on the problem and bring more focus towards spreading awareness regarding the devastating effects of narcotics on both the individual and their community. It started with a visit to an addiction therapy facility in cooperation with the Anti Drug Centre and will continue with more steps that include school runs to spread further knowledge
The event will have ive distinct sections, each with a different doctor. Every speaker will have their

and awareness. Big Brother (Ala Najjar) Big Brother is all about mentorship since medical students tend to have a clear deinitive line between their older and younger members. Many of these younger members would prefer to be able to contact their seniors, but struggle to ind the appropriate means to do so. Through this program we will be setting up a legitimate method to allow our younger students to reach up, and our older students to act as elder siblings in the university. Guiding them through everything, from college studies to navigation between university sites and inally aiding them in adjusting to their new lifestyle. This project will help make YU-LC more connected.

JUST-LC Recap By Farah Bani Hani Past Projects: ISF - Injections, Suturing and First Aid ISF is an annual project that gives medical students the opportunity to learn and practice skills that are considered fundamental in the medical domain but are not inserted as part of the basic curriculum. Under the leadership of Hassan Yousef, and the efforts of 5 OCs, ISF delivered what has always been expected ever since its initial launch; guiding 108 young medical students in the practice of CPR, suturing, and injection techniques, not just for the sake of knowledge, but to give those students the boost they need to perform these tasks with the highest lev-
el of conidence and accuracy. The event took place on the 10th of February, where 5 qualiied trainers provided indepth sessions, instructing future physicians that practice is the irst pillar of knowledge. Germ Fighters: A project that was successfully formulated by another SCOPH/SCORP collaboration; Germ Fighters aimed to spread awareness amongst a younger demographic, with the assistance of teachers and parents, about the importance of hygiene. 10 OCs and 30 volunteers under the leadership of Nadine Absy, set off to Samta Primary School and Bridges Academy on the 11th and 12th of February respectively, to educate young children about
the importance of personal hygiene and nutrition; two basic topics that play an important part in the well being of children, especially around the lu season. Puppet shows illustrated the signiicance of dental hygiene, proper hand washing & sanitation methods and nutrition. Teachers were also part of the discussion, helping emphasize the vital role the educational system plays in keeping children healthy and nourished all year round.
Future Projects: Walk for the Cure: Cancer walks are held annually all over the world
by various cancer societies to spread awareness, and as a fundraising tool to assist in further research programs. This year Jordan will host its irst team fundraising cancer walk, and it will be under the leadership of Rajaa Qasaimeh. The Gravity of this project lies in the circumstance that we all ind ourselves knowing someone who is either ighting or has fought cancer; whether it be a family member or a friend. The aim is to bring people inclusively together in hopes that one day a much-needed cure is inally found. Medical Day at JUST:

Hypertension, Diabetes, Breast & Prostate cancer, and various mental health have one thing in common, the possibility of averting them. This Medical Day, under the leadership of Jamil Zraikat, will be held on the 10th of April and will aim to give participants a comprehensive understanding of preventable diseases; that will include methods of interception in addition to red lags associated with each disease since time is a key player in counteracting the potenial outcome.

UJ LC RECAP By Farah Bani Hani El Daffa 3affa As the winter months stormed upon us, we were reminded of the detrimental effects the cold has on those in need; the dilapidation of homes, loods, and the lack of suficient energy, all these culminate into the picture of children craving warmth. A story replayed each year as winter kicks in. Led by Laith Kaylani under the umbrella of SCORP, and in coordination with Dr.Hana Abu-Hassan, El Daffa 3affa targeted refugees at Al-Azraq camp in Jordan, providing occupants with blankets bought with donations collected by the OCs, and delivered on Christmas day 2017. The joy created that day was well worth the efforts the participating parties put into this project, showing what a single -blanket-, can do to those who need it. Your Nutrition, Your Health A multi-step project; it showcases how SCOPH not only aims to educate medical students, but also believes in the necessity of community-based education in order to combat the issues we may face. Your Nutrition, Your Health, led by Tara Al Ayash, started by training medical students about the fundamentals of food safety, which included proper storage, hygiene, poisoning signs & symptoms, and irst aid interventions. This step was facilitated by conducting a meeting with the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts, introducing a potential collaboration between the academy and the Jordanian Food and Drug Agency to conduct similar training sessions on a professional level.
The project also offered IFMSA-Jo members the chance to participate in Amman’s food week. The subsequent steps will involve workshops designed speciically for restaurant workers and food handlers; targeting this group is expected to result in a decline in the reported cases of food poisoning. The third and inal step will be the broadest; orienting the general public through extensive awareness campaigns, scheduled to take place in a variety of locations across Amman, ensuring the message gets across to different demographics. Some of the target groups include schoolaged students, university students, & women in different refugee camps, who will all be educated through appropriate methods.

The Study of Studies: Erevanology A SCORE project that aimed to introduce participates to the concepts and inner-workings that result in the publishing of a medical study. Erevanology, which is an amalgamation of the Greek word έρευνα “érevna”; which means research, and the sufix -ology; which means the study of, was held on February 24th at the University of Jordan’s faculty of medicine. The project featured 3 doctors, Dr. Hamza Al-Duradi, Dr. Ayman Aref, and Dr. Saif Rylat, who each gave talks about a particular aspect of conducting research. The project was lead and co-lead by Mahdi Sharawi and Faris Haddad. The talented OCs are discussing a potential 2nd step after the exam season is over.
Surgical Skills made Simple In order to make the most out of theoretical medical education, practical implementation is key. Under the leadership of Salah Khasawneh, medical students were familiarized with three basic surgical skills gowning & gloving, suturing techniques, and surgical knots. Since perfect sterilization is necessary for any medical procedure, participants were shown how to properly execute surgical shielding, known as the designated ‘A’ in medical phraseology. That was followed by supervised workshops on the art of suturing, which is a basic requirement regardless of an intended career in surgery. Finally, Surgical knots; multiple hospitals throughout the Kingdom will collaborate in this project to orient trainees on the pace of surgical rooms, creating the perfect atmosphere to recreate all that was learned.

The project was executed in three stages. First was a training workshop held in cooperation with the German Jordanian University, where participants had the opportunity to experience poor eyesight through a speciically designed simulation, demonstrating all the potential obstacles faced daily, they also learned about the different equipment used to aid people living with blindness and poor vision. Ambidexterity and Behavioral Disorders Are two dominant hands better than one? Farah Bani Hani
Walking into our Neuroanatomy lectures, we were soon to learn how our brain is in fact made up of two hemispheres, partially connected to ensure adequate communication is allowed to low freely yet under controlled circumstances. Each hemisphere specializes, through speciic processes to govern certain tasks; the right hemisphere controls the left side of the body and is associated with mainly spatial perception, facial recognition and understanding music. The left hemisphere controls the right side of the body and is associated with understanding math and logic. The fact that each side of the brain is specialized in fulilling certain tasks exclusively allows the two hemispheres to be anatomically symmetrical, but functionally asym
metrical, also known as lateralization. This permits each hemisphere to work jointly with the other in processing & executing motor and sensory tasks, some of which are mundane and done subconsciously. Language is an example of ‘lateralization’. The two hemispheres are anatomically symmetrical, which means each half has the predisposition to compartmentalize the language centers known as Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas; however during our early development, our dominant hand accounts for which hemisphere gets specialized and which aids the other through association areas. Another example can illustrate how most of our central functions work, with 90% of the population being right handed and 9% being left handed, these percentages also cor

National Medical Debate Tournament Imagine standing on a podium with the opponent team right across from you, illing the room, back and forth, with antithetical medical controversies and talking point; succeeding in elevating your point redquires skills of logical consistency, factual accuracy, and the ability to create a dialogue strategy that includes a degree of emotional appeal. This SCOME project invited students from all local committees to form teams of three to battle their way through local tournaments for a chance to represent their universities at nationals. Lead by Al-Ameen Aitan, the project was the perfect opportunity for students to strengthen their medical foundation and improve their ability to hold a wellpaced debate, regardless of how heated circumstances. The local tournaments were preceded with Debating Training Workshops presented by professional certiied trainers at each local committee, in order

to improve the debating skills and boost the conidence of the participants. The irst workshop was held on the 28th of January at JUST, the rest followed on the 6th of February at UJ, MU, HU, and YU. SCOME webinars SCOME’s second Webinar was about Social Accountability; what is it? Why do we need it? How to become an effective participant in society? What are the global opportunities in such iled? All were some of the topics discussed on the 28th of January 2018 under the leadership of Mr. Obada Nahawi.
Future projects: SCOME Camp SCOME Camp is a project that aims to bring further attention to medical education, starting from basic skills & training to different curricula and teaching methods adopted by our faculties; for example, the arrangements assumed by pre and postgraduate programs. relate to the specialization of the opposite hemisphere, guaranteeing the two hemispheres work in tandem, to fulill their designated tasks. Unfortunately for the remaining 1%, that is not the case; during their early development, lateralization did not occur, nor did specialization, which means their two hemispheres are anatomically and functionally symmetrical. Ambidextrous individuals are those whom are capable of using both their hands with equal ability, demonstrated by identical motor patterns used when writing, not to be confused with mixed laterality, a case best seen in musicians and typists, as those were trained to use their anti-dominant hand after the process of lateralization occurred naturally. Which begs the question, are two dominant hands better than one? unfortunately no,
you’d imagine that the stronger connections between the different areas of the brain would afirm the answer, but the fact that both hemispheres are functioning to the same degree of competence and receive the same amounts of sensory input puts the brain in a state of competition, Hemisphere A vs Hemisphere B, leading to heightened risk of ADHD, Autism, Linguistic problems. These dificulties faced by ambidextrous children are mainly explained by the constant state of rivalry between the two hemispheres, one hemisphere is not permitted to surpass the functional ability of the other, leaving the child facing linguistic and behavioral challenges. To support such indings, a study by team of European researches was conducted to assess the linguistic and scholastic abilities of 8000 Finnish children dealing with ambidexterity/mixed laterality; by the age of 8, ambidextrous kids were twice as likely to suffer academically, and by the age of
16 they were twice as likely to have severe symptoms of ADHD. This suggests that Ambidexterity is not evolutionarily advantageous, since our brains are programmed to achieve specialization of the hemispheres by age six, around the time we ind our dominant hand. So why is that not achieved in some children? Another study conducted by UCLA found that women whom undergo stressful conditions during their pregnancies are more likely to have children with ambidexterity; this supporters the hypothesis of epigenetics, a mechanism in which the environment surrounding the child in utero plays a huge role in gene expression afterwards, keeping in mind that not all children with ambidexterity will suffer from academic delay and developmental challenges manifested by attention deicit and autism spectrum disorders, it remains multifactorial, but the lack of laterality increases the risk signiicantly.

Quebec’s health and welfare commission, the province suffers from the highest emergency room waiting times in the west; around 35% of patients wait 5 hours or more for medical attention, compared with 2% in Switzerland. The Doctors also state, that this move would be very unfair to other works in the system, such as nurses, as they become overworked and relatively underpaid. Nurses have voiced outrage over the current situation, complaining that the long and many shifts leave them exhausted and stressed which can hinder their ability to provide quality healthcare. “We, Quebec doctors,
An open letter rejecting the newly negotiated pay rise for doctors of the French-speaking Canadian province of Quebec has been signed by nearly 800 doctors and medical residents. The letter was drafted by Médecins Québécois pour le Régime Public, “Quebec Doctors for Public Healthcare”; a group founded in 2005, who advocate for the greater protection of Public Healthcare systems. Doctors who signed the letter argue that the funds used to pay for their pay-raise can be better used in other parts of the public healthcare system. According to a report by
