On October 30th, 2021 I had a stroke. By the grace of God I did not experience any visible damage or permanent disabilities that we know of. While resting, a well respected supportive friend, Rosalind Lewis; a wife, mother, military retiree, former police officer, teacher, cancer survivor, stepper and better half of a Power Couple shared this advice with me. So instead of my usual advice column, I decided to share her advice with you. Hopefully this will help you age gracefully and cheerfully. Relax and read, Between now and death. It’s time to use the money you saved up. Use it and enjoy it. Don’t just keep it for those who may have no notion of the sacrifices you made to get it. Remember there is nothing more dangerous than a son or daughter-in-law with big ideas for your hard-earned capital. Warning: This is also a bad time for investments, even if it seems wonderful or fool-proof. They only bring problems and worries. This is a time for you to enjoy some peace and quiet. Stop worrying about the financial situation of your children and grandchildren, and don’t feel bad spending your money on yourself. You’ve taken care of them for many years, and you’ve taught them what you could. You gave them an education, food, shelter, and support. The responsibility is now theirs to earn their own money. Maintain a healthy life, without great physical effort. Do moderate exercise (like walking every day), eat well, and get your sleep. It’s easy to become sick, and it gets harder to remain healthy. So keep yourself in good shape and be aware of your medical and physical needs. Keep in touch with your doctor, do tests even when you’re feeling well. Stay informed. - Always buy the best, most beautiful items for your significant other. The key goal is to enjoy your money with

your partner. One day one of you will miss the other, and the money will not provide any comfort then, enjoy it together now. Don’t stress over the little things. You’ve already overcome so much in your life. You have good memories and bad ones, but the important thing is the present. Don’t let the past drag you down and don’t let the future frighten you. Feel good in the now. Small issues will soon be forgotten. Regardless of age, always keep love alive. Love your partner, love life, love your family, and love your neighbor. Remember, “A man is not old as long as he has intelligence and affection.” ABC: Always be Cute. Don’t stop going to your hair salon or barber. Do your nails, go to the dermatologist and the dentist. Wear your perfumes and oils daily. When you are well-maintained on the outside, it seeps in your soul, making you feel proud and strong on the inside. Don’t lose sight of fashion trends, but keep your own sense of style. You’ve developed your own sense of what looks good on you – keep it and be proud of it. It’s part of who you are. ALWAYS stay up-to-date. Read newspapers, watch the news. Go online and read what people are saying. Make sure you have an active email account and try to use some of those social networks. You’ll be surprised at what old friends you’ll meet. Respect the younger generation and their opinions. They may not have the same ideas as you, but they are the future and will take the world in their direction. Give advice, not criticism, and try to remind them that yesterday’s wisdom still applies today. Never use the phrase: “In my time.” Your time is now. As long as you’re alive, you are part of this time. Some embrace their golden years, while others become bitter and surly. Life is too short to waste your days on the latter.

Spend your time with positive, cheerful people, it’ll rub off on you and your days will seem that much better. Spending your time with bitter people will make you feel older and harder to be around. Do not surrender to the temptation of living with your children or grandchildren (if you have a financial choice, that is). Sure, being surrounded by family sounds great, but we all need our privacy. They need theirs and you need yours. Even then, do so only if you feel you really need the help or do not want to live by yourself Don’t abandon your hobbies. If you don’t have any, make new ones. You can travel, hike, cook, read and dance. You can adopt a cat or a dog, grow a kitchen garden, play cards, checkers, chess, dominoes, golf. Try to get out of the house regularly. Meet friends you haven’t seen in a while, experience something new (or something old). The important thing is to leave the house from time to time. Go to museums, go walk through a park. Just get out there. Speak in courteous tones and try not to complain or criticize too much un-

less you really need to. Try to accept situations as they are. Pains and discomfort go hand in hand. Try not to dwell on them, moving through pain is a part of living. If you’ve been offended by someone – forgive them. If you’ve offended someone-apologize. Don’t drag around resentment with you. It only serves to make you sad and bitter. It doesn’t matter who was right. Someone once said: “Holding a grudge is like taking poison and expecting the other person to die.” Don’t take that poison. Forgive, forget, and move on with your life. Laugh and Dance often There are always comedy shows attend one or watch one on TV, We all have heard laughter heals Dance every chance you get. Dancing is more fun than exercise. Remember, you are one of the lucky ones.. Many never get to this age, never get to experience a full life. You managed to have a life, a long one My valued friends, enjoy a peaceful life at this point in your life ... Don’t worry... be happy. #Blessings Page 3

A Moment in Florida A&M History By Attorney Monica Harris

With the encouragement of his father, Black Abolitionist Jonathan C. Gibbs, Thomas VR Gibbs introduced legislation to create the State Normal College for Colored Students in 1885, one year after being elected to the Florida Legislature. Thomas DeSaille Tucker, who became the school’s first President, cofounded the institution with Gibbs. The date also reflects the new Florida Constitution of 1885, which prohibited racial integration in schools. The college was located in Tallahassee because Leon County and adjacent counties led the state in African-American population, reflecting Tallahassee’s former status as the center of Florida’s slave trade. The site of the university is the 375acre slave plantation of Florida governor William Pope Duval, whose mansion, today is the site of the Carnegie Library, burned in 1905. The plantation had an abundance of rattlesnakes, thus the school’s mas-

cot (the Rattlers). On October 3, 1887, the State Normal College for Colored Students began classes and became a landgrant College four years later. The name was then changed to State Normal and Industrial College for Colored Students. In 1909, the name was once again changed to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes (FAMC) and in 1953, the name was changed to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Florida A&M is the only publicly funded historically black College or university in the state of Florida. Tallahassee in 1925. Through 75 meetings thus far, the Rattlers hold a 5024-1 series lead, thanks in large part to FAMU’s early success — including a run of 25 wins in 26 games between 1930 and 1972, the final game in that stretch serving as the final meeting at Welch Memorial Stadium in Daytona Beach. By that time, the event had outgrown the teams’ respective home stadiums. During the early- and mid-1970s, organizers held the game at multiple venues throughout the state, including Doak Campbell Stadium, Daytona International Speedway and Camping World Stadium — then known as the Florida Citrus Bowl, coming on the heels of a major expansion, in 1976 — in search of the

right host. Eventually, the schools agreed on a permanent location, and in 1978 the “Florida Classic” was officially born, with Florida A&M and head coach Rudy Hubbard (a former Woody Hayes assistant) helping his team turn a 17-0 halftime deficit into a 27-17 win in the premiere game, a victory that ultimately proved critical during the Rattlers’ run to the inaugural NCAA Division 1-AA title. However, it wasn’t until the game returned to Orlando for good in 1997 that the rivalry truly found its perfect fit — as evidenced by the 56,351 fans in attendance for Orlando’s first “Classic,” more than 25,000 more than the previous year in Tampa. Rapid7, a cybersecurity tech company out of Boston MA, has pledged to bring over 100 jobs to the Tampa Bay area, citing the growing young tech talent in the community. The company is opening its 10th U.S. firm in the area at Industrious Sparkman Wharf. The shared workspace will accommodate the company until it finds a permanent home in 2022. Corey E. Thomas, CEO of the cybersecurity analytics firm, liked the Tampa Bay area because of the University of South Florida’s tech graduates as well as other Florida colleges but also for the military presence of the MacDill Air Force Base community. Hiring graduates early can help them to develop careers in the tech industry, said Thomas. The company will house a range of

operations, from software development to technical support and human resources. Ultimately the company would like to have hundreds of jobs in the Tampa Bay area. Rapid7 has approximately 2000 jobs worldwide in the United States and Europe with revenues of over $400 million. Corey Thomas is the Chairman of the Board of Rapid7 and serves on several other boards. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the tech industry and has led other tech companies in the next stages of growth. Mayor Jane Castor said in a statement, “Tampa continues to prove that it’s an ideal location for innovative tech companies looking for diverse, technical talent.”

At the sound of the commotion, she looks up, puts her coffee cup down, gets up from her seat and makes her way, unhurried, across the restaurant. Reaching the boy, the woman carefully drops his pants, takes hold of the boy’s testicles and starts to squeeze and twist, gently at first and then ever so firmly. After a few seconds the boy convulses violently and coughs up the last penny, which the woman deftly catches in her free hand. Releasing the boy’s testicles, the woman walks back to her seat at the coffee bar without saying a word, but keeps the penny. As soon as he is sure that his son has suffered no ill effects, the father rushes over to the woman and starts thanking her saying, “I’ve never seen anybody do anything like that before, it was fantastic. Are you a doctor?” “No,” the woman replied. “I’m with the Internal Revenue Service.”

At a job Interview my son was asked by the human resource officer, “What are your strengths?” He replied “I take matters in my own hands.” The interviewer replied, “Oh, ok, thank you. We will contact you if you are selected.” Then he replied “No, I will contact you.” My son is still unemployed

A man went to the doctor’s office to get a double dose of Viagra. The doctor told him that he couldn’t allow him a double dose. “Why not?” asked the man. “Because it’s not safe,” replied the doctor. “But I need it really bad,” said the man.“Well, why do you need it so badly?” asked the doctor. The man said, “My girlfriend is coming into town on Friday; my exwife will be here on Saturday, and my wife is coming home on Sunday. Can’t you see? I must have a double dose.” The doctor finally relented saying, “Okay, I’ll give it to you, but you have to come in on Monday morning so that I can check you to see if there are any side effects.” On Monday, the man dragged himself in; his arm in a sling. The doctor asked, “What happened to you?”The man said, “No one showed up.”

A little girl was praying when her dad walked in. she said “good night grandma good night mom good night dad good bye grandpa”. the next day the grandpa drops dead. the dad decides to ignore what she says last night and continues on with his day. That night the dad walks in his daughters room praying again. she says “good night mom, good night dad, goodbye grandma”. The next day the grandma drops dead. the dad starts to get a little freaked and at night he hears his daughter praying again.she says “good night mom, good bye dad”. The dad I completely freaked out so when he goes to work that day he stays in his office. He is afraid of going home so he stays until closing. He comes home and his wife opens the door. She says “where have you been?” He says “I’ve had a rough day.” the wife says, “you’ve had a rough day? First of all, this morning the mailman drops dead right in front of me.”
