Dear Girlfriend, I have a car but my insurance has expired and I can’t get my new registration without proof of insurance. However, I should be able to rectify this problem next month. Well the good news is I won some tickets from the radio station for an upcoming concert. I would like to take this young lady that works down the hall from me. I attend HCC and I think she does too because I have seen her on campus a few times at a distance. I don’t even think she knows I’m interested because we have never spoken to each other. My question is “should I ask her out for a date, knowing I don’t have any transportation right now? Should I wait to I have it all together? Will she think I am a loser? Would you date a guy without a ride? Dating Dude
Dear Dating Dude, When I was in college, I dated a guy without a car and I remember we went to the Ebony Fashion Fair and I drove. However, he did buy my gas. I gave him a chance because I liked the way he looked, dressed, and spoke. In my mind he wasn’t a loser because he was in college and had his own apartment with a room mate. But, I was ashamed to be driving him around. My dad raised us that it was not proper to be picking up a dude. All the boys I knew either had a hoopty (beat up car) or their parents older cars. So, I didn’t like it a bit. As time progressed, I did not hear him talking about how he was working towards getting a car so I could not respect him. In my opinion he could not seem to get it together so I kept it moving. In todays time of Uber and lift, and mass transportation dating without a car is not an issue. Dating by Train and bus is how they grew up in large northern cities and on the east coast. Growing up in the south & dating was different but all that is changing too. You can get away with not having a car but if she drives, you are expected to purchase the gas for her car. Furthermore if you began to ride with her daily, you will be expected to pay for an oil change or two, so collect some coupons. If the relationship continues you will find yourself expected to buy tires too. I’m just saying it takes all that to keep a car rolling but you already know all that because you have one yourself. If a good girl likes you, she will tolerate you not having it all together for a minute but you should appear to be moving forward. If you don’t get it together after a while, I am sure she will lose respect for you as I did for him. Especially if all the other guys she knows has rides and if she is holding her stuff down. so the best policy is to be up front with your situation, goals and aspirations. My advice to you is, “ Ask her out!” The worst thing that can happen is she says no. Then you will still go and you will know to not waste your time pursuing her. However, if she says Yes, Get an Uber and show her a good time and let your swag carry you. A lot of people take Uber so they can drink with out worrying about catching a DUI charge. Go for it and enjoy yourself. Don’t worry about what can go wrong, be Bold and be prepared for what may go right. Hey!!!!! Get a Life…and Other Things I Know at 29
Today, I am 29 years old, and I feel so strong and so on track. I am not sure if I have felt this way on my birthday in years past or if greater confidence comes with age. All I know is that, I believe that birthdays are a marker—and this one is telling me that I’m going in the right direction. I celebrated my sixth anniversary a couple of days ago, and I now feel empowered to share with my peers what I have learned about marriage. According to Malcolm Gladwell, at 10 thousand hours, it is possible to claim expertise in a subject area. Since I have been married much longer than that, I will share some wisdom that time has taught me. I tell as many women that I can that there are three ways to succeed in this life. I hope these lessons help you as much as they help me. Sorry gentlemen, if you haven’t noticed yet, this one is for the ladies. For my closest friends, I know you’ve heard these lessons a million times, so bear with me. Lesson 1: Self-Care is the Key to Success: How can I say this nicely? There is a such thing as feminine power. Much of it is connected to beauty. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to never let yourself go. Make a concerted effort to exercise, eat well, take care of your skin and hair, and dress yourself in a manner that is attractive and appropriate for whatever situation you find yourself. If you could only master this aspect of life, I think it would make a major difference in how you feel about yourself and how others feel about
you. Self-care means taking a little time for yourself every week to get your nails done, go to the gym, get a massage, or get hooked up at the beauty salon. That is a part of it. The second part of self-care is self-talk. Are you overly critical of yourself? Is your self-talk very negative? Do you speak lovingly to those parts of yourself you are not proud to display? As we are gracious with ourselves, it is much easier to extend grace to others. You can be Instagram fit with perfect makeup and brand-name clothing, but speaking against other people or yourself excessively is so unattractive. Lesson 2: You Gotta Have Friends: My mom modeled this lesson very well for me, but I had to re-learn it for myself as an adult. Having your own friends, especially when you are married, is so important. Sometimes, you should go on a trip with your girls or have dinner with some ladies from work. Cultivate and maintain strong, female friendships. Women need each other, and we can provide for each other what men never can. Up with Sisterhood! If you’ve gotten to far away, call up an old friend TODAY! Lesson 3: Marketable Skills are a Must: You must be able to survive in the global marketplace. Whatever you can do, do it. Can you sew, do hair, do you have nursing skills, can you speak languages? Whatever you have been trained to do, do not fall out of practice. If you ever have to make it on your own, you should
be able to do so, and do so in a way that is financially beneficial to your household. If I had to package these three lessons together, I would call them “Get a Life.” If you are married and you don’t have a world outside of your spouse, you are headed for disaster. If you are single and waiting for someone else to become your life, you have fallen for the fallacy of the romantic savior. There is no one on earth that is able to be your everything, and asking anyone to do or be otherwise is totally unreasonable. The life that you will love most, will be the one you have created, where you are being your best self, sharing your life with great friends and offering your gifts to the world. The biggest truth of it all is that the greatest love I have ever found was from God. He brought me my husband, my career, and years of favor with people and institutions. Without him, I would be nothing, and I would be waiting for someone to love me to life, when he has been there for me all along. As I approach year 30 with these lessons in tow, it is time to take on new challenges, like financial literacy and re-opening myself to the unforgiving world of social media (baby steps!). God has been my anchor, my teacher and my deliverer. And though I married the best man that I know and have ever met, it is the light of God that makes him— and makes us truly great. You Heard It From Me
By DJ CEO Daryl Johnson
The Men on Wabash Cove I never wondered about what it meant to be a dad because I had a fine father by the name of Theodore Roosevelt Johnson that made it look as easy as breathing. As early as I can remember we lived in an all Black neighborhood in Memphis Tennessee with strong male figures all around us. Being the youngest of 7 children, 5 brothers and a sister, I was surrounded by a plethora of hard working Black men of all sizes, shapes and shades. I’m proud to say, my neighbors all had two parent households. The neighbor to the left of us was Don Johnson, and he had a daughter named Toni. Don worked for International Harvester and his wife was the beautiful Mary Kay lady. They always had the finest clothes and cars including a pink cadillac, but more importantly, he always had the hookup. To the right of us was Reverend Taylor. I don’t remember Mrs. Taylor. I guess because they didn’t have any children but they had two German Shepherds that ruled his yard. The boys in the neighborhood usually played football in our backyard because it was the biggest in the neighborhood. However, when the football would go over the fence into Rev’s yard, we would all debate who was going to jump over the fence to get it. It was almost like a rite of passage to be able to jump the fence and retrieve the ball without getting ripped to shreds by the German Shepherds. It was always a planned attack because we would have to distract both dogs to get to the ball and of course, speed was of utmost importance. By the way, Don Johnson, the neighbor to the left of us also had a dog named She Wee that terrorized us, but for some reason, only one boy could tame that little dog and that was Marvin Jeffery. Mr. Myers, on the other side of Rev. Taylor was a kind man, who went to work everyday hoping to carve out a piece of the American Dream for his family. He had two sons and a pretty cigarette smoking wife. I later realized that he drank a little too much but he was never visibly drunk or mean and always maintained his family. Hindsight that may have been why his sons later exhibited addictive behaviors as well. Mr. Wilson lived next to Mr. Myers with his family of 4 children and his sisters family lived with them. They all grew up and did very well too. Mr. Leo Savare was the scientist in the neigh-
borhood and his wife was one of our elementary school teachers. All the children in the neighborhood looked to them to help solve the mysteries of the world and if he couldn’t, we knew for sure that one of his 3 kids would. The whole family was very smart, light, bright, damn near white. So we felt like we had a little diversity in the hood. Mr. Harris and Mr. Baptist were almost like ghosts. They worked long hours and were very quiet in their interaction with the neighborhood. Mr Harris died early so he was missed. The only time I saw Mr. Baptist was when he would get his mail. He did bless me one day with some wood he had on the side of his house. I was building something, I can’t remember what it was but he helped me. I’m glad I had the courage to ask him for the wood. Across the street from Mr. Baptist was Mr. Pearson, the father of my best friend, Michael. Mr. Pearson had 3 children; 2 boys and one girl. However, he took care of everyone’s boys. He had us all playing baseball. One summer he took us to St. Louis to see the Arch and a baseball game. Baseball was his younger sons Michael’s ticket to college. Michael attended Fisk University, pledged Alpha and became a commercial banker. Next door was Mr. Booker and he had two daughters and he was kind of a fix-it guy who preached. When he passed, he left the house to his daughters. Next door to Mr. Booker was Mr. Jeffery. He had three sons and they were all great athletes. His divorce from Mrs. Jeffery was the first time we had to experience divorce in our neighborhood. It wasn’t easy, especially for the younger sons. My friend was Rodney. He went to college and be-
came an engineer and pledged Omega Psi Phi. Next to the Jeffereys were the Sartors. Mr. Sartor worked at the Post Office. His wife’s twin sister lived with them with her two sons. Sartor was an honorable man. As children we used to talk about all the men in the cove depending on who was privy to the conversation, we always talked positive about each others dad even though we were not blind to their shortcomings and always knew more than we let on. The fathers on my street were all men. and there was always a lesson to be learned. All these men had an impact on my life in some aspect of what was good, bad and acceptable. Regardless to the daily struggles of being a Black man in the 60s, they took care of their families, they took care of their homes, and they protected the neighborhood. Rarely did we see police in our neighborhoods. As we grew older and did, we knew them all because they went to our schools. It is a must for this next generation to get back to family first. They must see two parent family homes with more frequency. They must see what it means to be a father on a regular basis as it will help to shape them to become productive citizens, to say the least. The kids that came off of Wabash Circle grew up to become just that, productive citizens. We had some that didn’t quite fair as well but I can name them all on one hand but they all still had a sense of respect for others. To all the fathers that were before me, I want to say thank you for helping to shape us into the men that we became. I have tried to pass on the many lessons that you taught me along the way. My hope is that our next generation will be just as my fathers’s generation was, family men, providers, men of honor and dignity. I can still hear my father say, “Son man is not broad shoulder and narrow hips. Man is responsibility.” Thus, In my opinion anyone can be a baby’s daddy but it takes a sense of responsiblity to be a live in dad, a committed husband and a role model for the boys that may be watchhing. After 37 years of marriage and raising 4 productive citizens. I have concluded, it may not always be easy but it’s worth the sacrifice. With a help mate, and the grace of God You can do it! Stay strong young men! Happy Father’s Day
Juneteenth, actually June 19th, an African American holiday. The day the last slave was freed in Texas. Years after the signing of the Emanicipation Proclamation by President Lincoln, some slaves did not get to know they were free and continued to be slaves. Where will you celebrate? Know your history. Happy Father’s Day
Hello, My Loves! Many of us have experienced flying with passengers and their pets or even with our own pets. While I do not own neither cat or dog, I know many who do and would not dare travel without them. Recently, it was reported that a dog died in the overhead bin on a United Airlines flight, while en route from Houston to New York. Furthermore, according to an NPR news article, a flight attendant on board forced the owner to put her dog in the overhead compartment. Although United Airlines has offered an apology for this event, it was nonetheless a tragic incident for the family and...the dog. With that being said, I took the liberty to research TSA guidelines for passengers traveling with pets. Additionally, I’ve included pet travel regulations for American and Southwest Airlines. Here are a few things you need to know: TSA Pet Travel Regulations: 1. Although small pets are allowed through the checkpoint, TSA advises all passengers to check with the airline regarding their pet travel policy. 2. Animal carriers will go through a visual and/or physical inspection. 3. Dog and Cat breed are determined by the Airline, so please check. 4. All pets should be brought to the security checkpoint in a hand-held carrier and removed prior to the screening process. 5. Pets should be carried through the screening process. Additionally, pets can walk through this process if the owner has them on a leash. 6. Know the temperament of your pet. 7. Passengers should acclimate their pet to the traveling process by familiarizing it with the travel carrier. This should be done a few days prior to departure.
For more information regarding TSA guidelines for traveling with pets, visit their website at: www.tsa. gov or their blog page at: www.tsa.gov/blog. Information for persons traveling with service animals can be obtained by calling: 866.289.9673. Again, the goal here is to check with your airline carrier for specific allowances regarding pet and service animal travel. Below are pet travel guidelines for the following airlines. American Airlines~www.aa.com: • Service animals travel free of charge on domestic flights. • If the animal is for emotional or psychiatric support, there must be medical documentation and the airline must be notified within 48 hours prior to travel • Service animals must have an approved carrier, but can be held by the passenger in their lap while in-flight. • Regular or non-service pets can be added to the reservation at any time • The in-cabin pet fee is “$125.00 each way. Passengers pay $200 each way for a checked pet. These fees are paid in person • Pets must stay in an approved pet carrier and it must fit under the seat in front of the passenger. Visit American Airlines website or call: 800.433.7300 for additional information. Southwest Airlines~www.southwest.com: • All in-cabin pets must be in an approved pet carrier • No pets allowed in the cargo area • Passengers traveling with small pets (dogs & cats only) on domestic flights, must pay $95.00 each way. That’s all for now folks! Until next time, Happy Travels ~The Sungoddess

Go Ahead and Get your Laugh on! The Funky Parrot
A woman had a parrot that she took with her everywhere she went. She would even take the parrot to the club with her when she went dancing and drinking on Saturday nights. Whenever the woman went onto the dance floor, the parrot would yell, “The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire, we don’t need no water-let the muthafukkah burn! Burn, muthafukkah, burn!” The crowd on the dance floor would always cheer and holler in appreciation when the parrot would yell. This would make the parrot yell even more and of course make the crowd go wild. This would go on all night long, every time the parrot went out. One Sunday morning the woman took the parrot to church and into the choir section with her, and when the choir started to sing, the parrot yelled, ‘’The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire, we don’t need no water-let the muthafukkah burn! Burn, muthafukkah, burn!’’ She was horrified and corrected the parrot, “No, you don’t say that here!” The parrot looked around and asked, “Why not? These are the same muthafukkahs that was at the club last night!”
The Hunting Trip
Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He’s not breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls 911. “I think my friend is dead!” he yells. “What can I do?” The operator says, “Calm down. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.” There’s a silence, then a shot. Back on the phone, the guy says, “OK, now what?”
The Tracks
Three blondes girls were walking in the woods and came upon tracks. The first one said, “Look, it’s deer tracks.” The second one said, “No, it’s wolf tracks” and before the third one could answer, they got hit by a train.
Stopped for Speeding
A man who is driving a car is stopped by a police officer. The following exchange takes place . . The man says, ‘What’s the problem, Officer?’ Officer: ‘You were going at least 75 in a 55-zone.’ Man: ‘No Sir, I was going 65.’ Wife: ‘Oh, Harry, you were going 80.’ (The man gives his wife a dirty look.) Officer: ‘I’m also going to give you a ticket for your broken tail light.’ Man: ‘Broken tail light? I didn’t know about a broken tail light!’ Wife: ‘Oh, Harry, you’ve known about that tail light for weeks.’ (The man gives his wife another dirty look.) Officer: ‘I’m also going to give you a citation for not wearing your seatbelt.’ Man: ‘Oh, I just took it off when you were walking up to the car.’ Wife: ‘Oh, Harry, you never wear your seatbelt.’ The man turns to his wife and yells, ‘SHUT YOUR MOUTH!’ The Officer turns to the woman and asks, ‘Ma’am, does your husband talk to you this way all the time?’ The wife says, ‘No, only when he’s been drinking!
In the Monastery
A guy joins a monastery and takes a vow of silence: he’s allowed to say two words every seven years. After the first seven years, the elders bring him in and ask for his two words. ‘Cold floors,’ he says. They nod and send him away. Seven more years pass. They bring him back in and ask for his two words. He clears his throats and says, ‘Bad food.’ They nod and send him away. Seven more years pass. They bring him in for his two words. ‘I quit,’ he says. ‘That’s not surprising,’ the elders say. ‘You’ve done nothing but complain since you got here.’
Some things you just can’t explain
One day, a dairy farmer walked into a bar and asked the bartender for the strongest thing in the bar. “What’s wrong, fella?” asked the bartender. ‘’Some things you just can’t explain.” ‘’Try me.’’ well my beautiful new neighbor came over and asked my wife if she could borrow a cup of fresh milk. My wife told her to go out to the barn I was out there milking. Well while I was milking my cow this morning and I filled the bucket clear to the top. Then the dumb cow knocked it down with her left leg, so I grabbed some string and ties her left leg up. Then I milked her again and the stupid cow knocked it down with her right leg. So I grabbed some string and tied up her right leg. I then milked her again and the cow knocked it down with her tail. In walks my new neighbor, but this time I was out of string, so I decided to use my belt, so I tied it up with my belt. Just then my pants fell down and my wife walked in and thtats when the fight started.’’ “You’re right,” said the bartender. “Some things you just can’t explain.”
Riddles
Q: Why did the bunny hop around on one leg? A: Because the other one was on a key chain. Dad: Did you hear about the kidnapping at school? Son: No. What happened? Dad: The teacher woke him up. Why did the invisible man turn down the job offer? He couldn’t see himself doing it. Why shouldn’t you write with a broken pencil? Because it’s pointless. What lights up a soccer stadium? A soccer match. What does DNA stand for? National Dyslexia Association.
Keep on Laughing .....Laughter Heals!
A Father and son were out for a Saturday drive. The dad drives past a graveyard He asked his son How do you know that’s a popular spot? Son: people are just dying to to get in.
Who’s the Dummy
A ventriloquist is performing with his dummy on his lap. He’s telling a dumb-blonde joke when a young platinum-haired beauty jumps to her feet. “What gives you the right to stereotype blondes that way?” she demands. “What does hair color have to do with my worth as a human being?” Flustered, the ventriloquist begins to stammer out an apology. “You keep out of this!” she yells. “I’m talking to that little jerk on your knee!”
Dumb Blonde Jokes
A blonde decided to paint a room. When her husband got home, he asked, ‘Why are you wearing an Alaskan coat and a rain coat?’ She replied, ‘The can said for best results apply 2 coats.” Two blondes are walking down the road when one says, “Look at that dog with one eye!” The other blonde covers one of her yes and says, “Where?” Two blondes are facing each other across a wide stream. One yells to the other, ‘How do I get to the other side?’ The other blonde replies, ‘You are on the other side! Eighty-year-old George went for his annual check-up. He told the doctor that he felt fine, but often had to go to the bathroom during the night. Then he said: “But you know Doc, I’m blessed. God knows my eyesight is going, so he puts on the light when I pee, and turns it off when I’m done!” A little later in the day, Dr. Smith called George’s wife and said: “Your husband’s test results were fine, but he said something strange that has been bugging me. He claims that God turns the light on and off for him when uses the bathroom at night.” Thelma exclaimed: “That old fool! He’s been peeing in the refrigerator again!” Page 15

Specialty Summer Camps Aimed at Kids with a Taste for Adventure
Noone said summer camps always have to involve arts and crafts. Hillsborough County’s specialty camps are aimed at adventurous kids who love outdoor activities. Hillsborough County Parks will offer three specialty camps this summer: skating camp, eco-adventure camp, and fishing camp. All offer specialized instruction and activities for kids, from skateboard techniques to hiking excursions to how to throw a cast net.
Each of the specialty camps cost $120 for a two-week session, with the first sessions beginning in early June. Children who receive free or reduced-price lunches might qualify for a discount. For information on the skate camp, call (813) 744-5319. For the eco-adventure camp, call (813) 734-4712. For the fishing camp, call (813) 672-1120.
Tampa YMCA & Partners Start Free Mobile Swim Lessons Thanks to Children’s Board WHAT: The Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA will start a free mobile water safety program next Monday, June 4 thanks to the generosity of the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County. This is the fourth summer certified instructors, from the Tampa YMCA and Brandon Sports & Aquatic Center, will travel to pools located in apartment complexes and local neighborhoods to provide free lessons in basic water safety/swimming skills. Up to 24 children, ages 3-14, may participate in each oneweek session. The 45-minute classes are offered Monday through Friday at 25 sites. “The goal is to eliminate barriers that can prevent parents from getting their kids into water safety or swim classes,” says Tampa Y Aquatics Experience Executive Amanda Walker. “We want to remove challenges such
as transportation issues, a hectic work schedule and other deterrents.” Partners of this innovative program, funded by the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, include the Tampa YMCA and Brandon Sports & Aquatic Center. WHEN: June 4 - August 9 WHERE: Multiple locations throughout Hillsborough County WHY:Drowning is the leading cause of preventable deaths among Tampa Bay area children ages 1-5. Statistics show with proper instruction, the likelihood of a child drowning drops as much as 88 percent.
