Dear Girlfriend I am 40 years old and I have never had a Valentine’s date or Valentine’s gift from a man. The last time I even got a card was in college. I hate Valentines because all it does is remind me of what I don’t have. I have had guy friends all the way up until the week of Valentines Day and then they just disappear and stop calling but then reappear after the holiday. I have had dreams of having a Valentines only to wake up to find it wasn’t real. When Valentines fall on a work day. I hate that even more. Nothing could be worse for me than having to watch all the flowers coming in to coworkers and seeing some leave for lunch and coming back with gifts. Once I almost sent flowers to myself just for show. What’s a Single Sista to do in Tampa Bay? Dear Single Sista in Tampa Bay, Go sit outside at Daddy O’s Patio, eat, drink and be merry and watch the people go down 7th Avenue. Then Go home early and soak yourself in a hot Epsom salt bath and prepare for work the next day. When a man disappears around Valentines or any holiday, know that he was not your man. So good riddance. Accept that he is someone else’s man and he is with her... unless he has to work. Men are just like women, they want companionship, holidays filled with love, good food, laughter, kisses, and sex. If they are not doing all that with you, they are doing it with someone else. Now don’t get mad if you figure out you are not it, but instead, fall to your knees and Thank God that it was revealed before you were in too deep wasting years of your life like so many women have done. Most of my readers know, I host the Power Couples Ball and a Valentines affair annually, but we are not doing the Valentines Affair this year. Super Bowl is the day before Valentines and I am concentrating on enjoying Superbowl. You should too! However because of the magnitude of the events we’ve hosted I have had conversations with many single men about bringing dates. Surprisingly, I have heard more times than I can count, “I can’t bring her, I don’t want her to get the wrong idea.” What that means is, he does not really like to date like that and does not want to mislead her because when he finds Mrs. Right, he wants to bring her to the Ball. Ladies, in today’s times of so much “casual sex” it’s important that we know the difference between being a pacifier and a bottle. A pacifier is something to put in your mouth until your bottle comes. When the bottle comes the pacifier gets spit out. Girl you may need to call that old college beau who gave you the card and see what he is up to. He loved you then, he may love you now. I have found that many young college relationships fell to the wayside because the most successful young men were pursuing their education, and couldn’t afford to hang like the popular dudes. Society and young women have often put financial pressures on young men that some could not rise up to. So some would disappear to work on themselves hoping to come back when they got it together, when they felt they could compete or represent. My final suggestion is to change your perspective on this holiday by changing how you celebrate. I challenge you to make your valentines about giving love instead of receiving love. Instead of sending flowers to yourself, be a blessing to someone else. Take that same money and purchase a few small gifts (tokens) not junk, cute socks, little boxes of candy, for the men you like, men who have been nice to you, men and women who have lost their spouses, and the older women in your life. 40 is a great age! The hard stuff is already behind you. You’re wiser and self-sufficient. So the best is yet to come!

Celebrating the Martin Luther King Holiday We were blessed to attend the 42nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Breakfast at the Marriott Waterside in Downtown Tampa as guests of Power couple Darrick and Angela Fullwood, owners of AAA Restoration Construction Company. The 6:45 am start may have deterred a few but not the long list of Tampa dignitaries. I was truly impressed with the turn out. Gabrielle Morrison, Daughter of Bob Morrison ESQ and Dr. Jacintha Buggs Morrison delivered the occasion with eloquence. Musician Larson Washington moved the audience with the gospel song, “I am anchored in the Lord” The keynote speaker was Rev Emanuel Cleaver who reminded us that our voting rights and our democracy is being challenged. He reiterated that we must call and write our congressional leaders. TOBA annually presents scholarships to deserving Black students. N-Touch Radio host and TOBA Chair of Youth Development, Attorney Clinton Paris proudly announced 4 recipients:. Isaiah Alfred & Indya King of Blake High School and JaMario Hargrove & Autumn Hamilton of Middleton High School all will attend HBCUs.
After breakfast, we hurried home, changed clothes, did a bit of work on the Newspaper, and went on to the MLK foundation parade. Yes! The City of Tampa Dr. Martin Luther King Parade was on again after a year layoff due to COVID 19. This was the first year that both FAMU Marching 100 and the Bethune Cookman University Band were in attendance The parade started at Cuscaden Park located at 2900 N. 15th Street in the heart of East Tampa at 1:00 and ended at Middleton High School next door to the Skills Center. Thankfully We were invited to tailgate with Power Couple Ken and Celeste Roberts at their newly acquired Skills Center Building. Lunch and
drinks were provided. Family and friends were encouraged to hang out and unwind. We laughed and networked as the parade participants passed by throwing beads, playing music and just having a great time. and it was a much needed outing. Coming from a family of Kappa Alpha Psi Men, I must share the proud moment I experienced witnessing the large turn out of my fraternity brothers (old and young) stepping in the parade. I was
so moved I am considering strolling right along with them next year and inviting my brother and nephew to join us. The Dr. Martin Luther King Parade Foundation, Inc. is a certified charitable 501c3 non-profit organization established in 2014, whose purpose is to honor and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., while providing a lasting and positive impact throughout the Tampa community.
