Dear Girlfriend, My best friend has an obsession with a guy she has not seen in 25 years. She is a divorced, 45 year old, single mother and she has no man in her life. He was her first love, her first kiss, the whole nine yards. Immediately out of high school, he left for the military and we later heard he had married. Well, I attended our ten year reunion, but my friend did not. He was there and he asked me about her and I told him she too was married and was presently with child. When we attended our 20 year reunion, she went, but he did not. We heard through the grapevine then he was going through a divorce. About eight months ago while cleaning my deceased mom’s house, I found pictures of them and gave them to her. It’s like I opened a can of worms. Even though she has still not seen nor talked to this man, she talks about him as if it was yesterday. I’m getting worried, It’s almost obsessive. It’s like having the pictures has made it worse. He was a real good looker back then and so was she. She has since gained quite a bit of weight. She recently told me, she was trying to find him. I am afraid she is going to be very hurt if his feelings are not reciprocated. Any suggestions on how I can help her. I think she needs a reality check. Reality Check Dear Reality Check, Be a friend and let her have her dreams. Reminisce and laugh with her. It gives some of us something to live for, until something better comes along. Help her remember the good times and the bad times, so she does not get stuck on stupid. But be careful on how you bring up the bad ones, you do not want to come off negative. If she wants to find her old boyfriend, help her. The thought of seeing him may be the catalyst to her losing weight. So run with it. After the weight comes off and she has a new sense of self, the new attention she will receive, may help her forget her past love and change her focus on what’s new in her life. For all you know, he may be her soul mate. My sister found her first kiss and they were married in a year. My friend from college asked a lady at work how she was getting married a second time and she had not been married a first. The lady replied, “I found my old high school sweetheart.” My friend shared the story of her prom date and I helped her contact him. She had not talked to the guy in 10 years because they had both left the small town they were raised in on college scholarships. We called him on 3-way and they were married within a year and are still married now. It seems that the young men that knew you when you were growing up, have a tendency to treat you with more respect. I guess it’s because they don’t see you as just a hot piece. They have a tendency to see you as a person with feelings, because they know your parents, sisters or brothers. They remember you from back when life’s mistakes had damaged their optimism. I also believe that even though one may have changed a little, gained weight, and maybe even gone ball, the person from your past still sees you just the same. Have you ever noticed how your old friends will say, “you haven’t changed a bit.” That’s their fondness for you, seeing you as you were, because when you look back at the pictures, the change is so evident. I have heard that divorce is like death for a lot of people and the grieving process can be long and lonely. Let her past memories pacify her, until she is strong enough to face her future.
Power Couples’ Creed
Power Couples are upbeat couples who are visible in the community doing positive things. Power Couples implement positive change and their community is a better place because of them. Power Couples play different roles in their communities, some work with children and others with adults. Power Couples are some times entrepreneurs, stepping out on Faith making it happen, creating jobs and opportunities for others. Power Couples Couple are often times the lenders, and not the borrowers, it has nothing to do with how much money they make but everything to do with being a good shepherd with what God has given them. Power Couples may be decision makers who hold executive positions and are responsible for the livelihood of others Power Couples are helpful and people have a tendency to come to them in times of trouble for advice and encouragement. Power Couples make a personal decision to walk a positive walk. Power Couples are not perfect. They are not immune to trials and tribulations and some temptations. They may have made some mistakes and bad decisions in their past but that does not define them. Power Couples press forward and learn from their mistakes, because they know they are stronger together than they are apart. Page 3
You Heard It From ME Hup two three four, what the hell are they fighting for? In 2023 nothing is more glaring than seeing other countries struggle with war and the devastation bestowed on its people. Innocent people, women and children driven from their homes with nowhere to go, starving to death. We see there are losers and more losers. There are no real winners. There used to be a time where winning a war was victorious and rewarding as a country. It wasn’t until we began to realize the devastation the war had on our family members, that we felt differently about what war meant. We know that war can begin with an over pompous individual’s decision without a democratic process, killing tens of thousands of people for the actions of 50 or less extremists. Sadly once it begins, it’s almost impossible to stop. We know that egos, governmental contracts and greed can determine how long we participate in a war.
With global technology we now recognize that war is truly evil and the devils pun by creating more hate in the surviving youth for the unwarranted death of their family members. While the physical wars in other countries continue, there is always the war on terror we fight right here at home. Yet, here we are on America’s soil proudly saying, thank God for America, as raggedy as our politics are, I am forever grateful for being in America, home of the brave and land of the free with a democratic society. Until you have visited other countries, you don’t really appreciate what it means to be an American. I can remember my first real overseas adventure, where I actually left the continents of North and South America. It wasn’t until we had to fill out a Declaration form with the airlines and I had to check the citizenship of my country, I declared American. At that point in my mind I stopped be-

ing Black, African American, Negro, Colored, I was an American and I felt like it. In 2023, we will continue to fight for dignity, respect and freedom. While it may sound like I am speaking to Black Americans, I am honestly speaking to all Americans because we damn sure don’t want to put up with the physicality of war on our home turf. I have concluded that love is the great equalizer and that hate is the great divider. We must continue the fight of freedom, justice and the American Way. If you love the American Way, you better vote to keep it. The good thing is, you don’t have to physically fight for it. Physical fighting means we are just like the other countries where individuals determine our fate. Here in America, our vote counts for something. At least that’s what we want to believe. In 2024 let’s shut wars down. Let’s focus on the good we’re doing as a
universe and continue to grow the world. For me, I’d like to see America build a wall on both borders, develop a comprehensive immigration policy, continue with our democratic values, eliminate the electoral college, add two additional supreme court justices, give women a reason to want to have children, give our citizens opportunities so as to not commit crimes so we can reduce prisons in hopes there are more men and women to marry. We need to develop concepts of 100% employment through government and keep A.I. in check until 3023. Lastly, I wish for Peace on earth and goodwill toward men. That’s worth fighting for.

A Huge Celebration of Black Heritage by Ruby Jackson
The annual 10-day Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival returns with art, music, culture, and events, just in time for the MLK Jr. Day weekend - Get your tickets today for the Tampa Bay area’s biggest celebration of culture, the Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival, will be Jan. 5-14, 2024. The festivities will culminate in a joyful two-day music festival at Curtis Hixon Park on Jan. 13 and 14, featuring national artists such as Keke Wyatt, Slave, Adam Hawley and Leela James. All are welcome to enjoy family-friendly activities, including a children’s village, as well as free health screenings, vendors offering delicious food, art, crafts and more. The Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival, Inc looks to promote and perpetuate the art, culture and history of African Americans and African people for Tampa Bay residents and visitors, as well as to support the rich and diverse culture of the community through inclusive events such as this. The opening weekend events will
kick off on Friday, Jan. 5 with a seminar for Black and Brown entrepreneurs, followed by a 5K Run/Walk on Jan. 6, and a “Western Glam” themed gala on Jan. 7. The Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival relies on donations and sponsors to bring the celebration of Black heritage to the community each year. FAMU Alumni Speaks to Graduates FAMU Rattler
ABC News president Kim Godwin addressed the graduates of her alma mater Florida A&M University during Fall Commencement on December 15th at 6 PM EST. This was her second commencement scheduled this fall as she was keynote at Morgan State’s commencement ceremony. Godwin, a native of Panama City, Florida, embarked on her media career at FAMU, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism in 1984. During her time at FAMU, Godwin honed her skills and developed a passion for journalism and storytelling. She engaged in various activities, including writing for university publications, attending journalism workshops, and collaborating with classmates on reports and broadcasting projects. Kim Godwin became president of ABC News in April 2021, becoming the first Black woman to lead a major
news outlet. Godwin oversees editorial and business operations of ABC News’s broadcast, digital, streaming, and audio news outlets. She also oversees hit shows and projects such as “Good Morning America,” “World News Tonight,” “20/20,” “Nightline,” FiveThirtyEight, “The View” and “This Week.” Under her leadership, ABC World News Tonight with David Mur has reigned as the #1 news show on television and Good Morning America has had significant viewership wins. Since her tenure Florida A&M has also been well represented on ABC News. Good Morning America held a live broadcast from the campus of Florida A&M in 2022 during the institution’s homecoming festivities. At that time, Godwin announced that Florida A&M’s School of Journalism & Graphic Communications would receive a $1 million grant over the next five years
“The Teaching Our Own History” Task Force By Reverend Dr. RB Holmes, Jr., Chairman (First in a Series)
“I’m for truth, no matter who tells it. I’m for justice, no matter who it is for or against. I’m a human being, first and foremost, and as such I’m for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole.” Malcolm X We have launched a statewide task force in conjunction with the Florida General Baptist Convention, Inc., Reverend Dr. Carl Johnson, President, to demand that the governor of Florida and the State Department of Education, teach black history accurately, factually and forthrightly. In the spirit of Dr. King, in the State of Florida, we organized a task force labeled, “Teaching Our Own History.” Carter G. Woodson, the founder of
Negro History Week, encouraged us to not sit idly by and allow this system to “mis”-educate black people. Our Task Force will present to the government, a comprehensive curriculum that correctly and effectively teaches Africa and African Americans history to students in Florida’s public schools. Moreover, we will develop forty (40) plus “Freedom Schools” by 2025. We will not sit idly by and allow any governor, to erase the accurate teaching of Black history. The Objectives of “The Teaching Our Own History” Task Force are as follows: 1. To encourage the accurate and unbiased teaching of African American history, culture, experiences and invaluable contributions in the state of Florida and this nation 2. To develop strategies and solutions to support and strengthen public education in marginalized communities
3. To develop and adequately support 40 Freedom Academies across the state of Florida 4. To create significant after school programs for students in Title One schools in marginalized communities across the state of Florida, using an age appropriate African American History Curriculum to strengthen reading, writing and mathematics skills 5. To create summer “Freedom Schools” to teach youth the importance of African Americans contributions, self-respect, personal responsibility, and African American contributions 6. To empower and encourage the three private HBCUs in Florida to develop laboratory schools on their respective campuses by 2025 7. To cultivate and create partnerships with foundations, businesses and philanthropists to support pro-
grams and events that consistently celebrate the contributions of African American history, culture, literature, faith and heritage We all must redouble our efforts to fight for social justice, voting rights, civil rights, diversity, equity and inclusion. The dismantling of programs of diversity, equity and inclusion are shameful and insulting. Pouring Used Cooking Oil, Fat, or Grease Down the Drain Will Ruin Your Pipes – Bring It to a Collection Station Instead Hillsborough County has numerous convenient sites where oil can be dropped off to be recycled – It’s the end of the year, and the holiday season is upon us. Families will come together to celebrate and spend time together. They’ll exchange gifts and share in delicious meals, including fried turkeys, but once the festivities are done, what do you do with the used cooking oil, fat, or grease? Don’t pour the cooking oil, fat, or grease down the drain, even if you add hot water or soap. Pouring cooking oil, fat, or grease down the drain can cause a serious problem for home plumbing and Hillsborough County's wastewater collection system. Cooking oil, fat, or grease that is poured down the drain gels and solidifies inside pipes, sewage lines, and sew-
age lift stations, constricting water flow. It can back up home plumbing and cause equipment to malfunction, leading to sewage spills, overflows onto streets, and foul odors in homes and neighborhoods. The used oil can be collected and brought to a number of County collection stations to be recycled into renewable resources and environmentally friendly alternatives used in various industries. There are 24 locations throughout the County, including libraries, several County parks and recreation centers, solid waste transfer stations, and a public utility service center. Used cooking oil, fat, and grease are collected all year long at these locations. The program is not
solely for the holidays. There are steps to take to properly collect the cooking oil to be recycled. Carefully pour cooled cooking oil into a large, sturdy plastic or glass food-grade container with a lid. Do not use containers that held petroleum products, such as motor oil. If the container is not full, close the container and store in a cool, safe location. Don’t mix the oil with any other liquids or products. Once the container is full, bring it to a Hillsborough County Cooking Oil Recycling Effort (CORE) station or to a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center. Along with not pouring cooking oil, fat, or grease down the drain, don’t
flush cooking oil or grease down the toilet, don’t put greasy foods down the garbage disposal, and don’t place used cooking oil in the recycling cart. Aging Well You look up one day and you realize that you have grown old .....prematurely. This does not happen to everyone. So, I have made up my mind that will not happen to me. What about you? The thing that has compelled me to write this article is watching my mother in law struggle with her life. Here is a lady that has traveled the world, from Bali to Shanghai, Thailand to Tibet and from Singapore to Spain Czechoslovakia and Vietnam is on that list. She has seen her fair share of the world. From her travels, she learned a lot about different cuisines and vegetables to eat and before it was hip to be a vegetarian, she was already on that path. My mother in law is not diabetic, no high blood pressure or any of the typical illnesses you see in people with debilitating health. She would pride herself in being astute on holistic cures. I remember She was still jogging with her daughters at age 60 However, at age 75 she was diagnosed as having Parkinson’s with signs of Dementia. The Parkinson’s is the type that stiffens the body, so she is becoming immobile. It is her inability to move that has caused her to be in the condition that she is in today. She retired early from teaching high school cosmetology, living alone, she began to sit. We all have heard, “you use it or loose it.” for her it was imperative that she moved, but she didn’t. So ask yourself, are you moving enough? Are you eating healthy There are some that aged very well. Let’s consider

It could be attributed to the great lives and great health care they had access to as a formerU.S. President and First Lady. It’s evident, they made great choices in their lives. Are you making great choices?” Me personally, I look good for my age. I am reasonably healthy, not on any medication. I try to eat well and get in some exercise at least three times a week. My doctor says I should walk daily but I am hardheaded but I’m getting there. However I do stretch, do push ups, play golf when the weather permits, and always dance at parties and events. Plus, I consciously eat something green everyday. I definitely should do more since I do smoke and drink occasionally. Yet, feel I make decent life choices. If you want a good life going into your golden years, let’s try not to get into that bad behavior of just sitting on the couch and switching channels. Get your butt up and walk down your street, and then your block. You’d be surprised at how much territory you can cover, If alone, move out of that “home alone” situation into living with your children, a senior center or friends while you are well. Alone is not good! Get involved in senior center activities. Take a foreign language Take some dance lessons, Take an art class, just do something different, anything...regularly! Peace

A lady goes to the doctor and complains that her husband is losing interest in sex. The doctor gives her a pill, but warns her that it’s still experimental. He tells her to slip it into his mashed potatoes at dinner, so that night, she does just that. About a week later, she’s back at the doctor, where she says, “Doc, the pill worked great! I put it in the potatoes like you said! It wasn’t five minutes later that he jumped up, raked all the food and dishes onto the floor, grabbed me, ripped all my clothes off, and ravaged me right there on the table!” The doctor says, “I’m sorry, we didn’t realize the pill was that strong! The husband said, “No, I can remember that you want a bowl of ice cream.” She then told her husband she wanted a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream. “Write it down,” she told him, and again he said, “No, no, I can remember: you want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream.” Then the old lady said she wants a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top. “Write it down,” she told her husband and again he said, “No, I got it. You want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top.” So he goes to get the ice cream and spends an unusually long time in the kitchen, over 30 minutes. He comes out to his wife and hands her a plate of eggs and bacon. The old wife stares at the plate for a moment, then looks at her husband and asks, “Where’s the toast?” C..R.S. - Can’t remember sh@!
