POLITICAL WATCH • U.S. Sens. Adam Schiff (D-California) and Alex Padilla (D-California) and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) signed a June 9 letter addressed to three federal departments regarding David Huerta, president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California, who was arrested on June 6 during a confrontation at an ICE raid in Los Angeles. “During a workplace enforcement action, Mr. Huerta, a well-known and deeply respected community leader, was exercising his lawful right to observe the conduct of immigration enforcement personnel,” the letter stated. “In the course of doing so, Mr. Huerta suffered an injury and law enforcement personnel apprehended and subsequently arrested him. … We request that the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice undertake a review to determine which federal agencies and personnel were involved in the actions that resulted in the injuries sustained by Mr. Huerta and what disciplinary actions may be necessary for relevant federal personnel.” The Department of Justice charged Huerta with conspiracy to impede an officer, according to court documents. Huerta was released on June 9 on $50,000 bond.

• On June 5, U.S. Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-Santa Barbara) introduced a legislative package to prevent the deportation of servicemembers’ parents. The package includes his bipartisan legislation, the Protect Patriot Parents Act, which would make parents of U.S. military servicemembers eligible for lawful permanent resident status, preventing potential deportations or separations of military families. The package also contains a bill that would grant longtime Central Coast resident and military mother, Juana Flores, permanent resident status.

At a recent press conference on Capitol Hill, Carbajal spoke about Flores, the mother of U.S. Air Force Sgt. Caesar Flores. In 2021, Carbajal aided the Flores family in securing Juana’s return to the U.S. and worked with President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to secure humanitarian parole for Juana— who was deported from her home in Goleta despite living in the U.S. for more than 30 years and building a life in Santa Barbara County with her husband, 10 children, and 19 grandchildren, according to Carbajal’s office. “As a veteran and immigrant myself, I find it unconscionable that someone like Sgt. Flores could step up to serve in the military and be willing to sacrifice their life for our country, only to have their family torn apart,” Carbajal said. “That’s why I’m introducing legislation to shape an immigration system that is fair, keeps families together, and recognizes the positive contributions immigrants make to our country.” Juana’s granddaughter, Andrea Gómez Flores, stated that she wholeheartedly supports the passage of Carbajal’s bill. “No family should have to endure forced separation—especially when our loved ones are serving this country and fighting for the freedoms we all cherish,” Andrea said in the June 5 statement from Carbajal’s office.

“We must uphold the values of dignity, compassion, and justice for every family affected.” Carbajal is also a co-sponsor of U.S. Rep. Darren Soto’s (D-Florida) Protect Patriot Spouses Act, which would render military spouses eligible for adjustment to permanent resident status by amending the Immigration and Nationality Act to remove the inadmissibility standard because of an unlawful entry into the United States by the migrant spouse. It would also allow eligible veteran spouses who have already been removed or voluntarily departed the United States to apply for an immigrant visa from abroad and then become authorized to return to the country while their application is pending. m

HOOKED ON A FLEETING: On July 1, Guadalupe’s bus service will integrate into Santa Maria’s regional transit network, which currently has fixed routes in Orcutt, Los Alamos, New Cuyama, and other Santa Barbara County communities.

During its June 3 meeting, the Santa Maria City Council agreed to allow Guadalupe’s public transit service to integrate into Santa Maria’s network. Starting on July 1, buses carrying the banner of Santa Maria Regional Transit (SMRT) will absorb Guadalupe’s fixed routes.

“I think this is a great opportunity for residents,” Guadalupe City Councilmember Christina Hernandez said during her council’s review of Santa Maria staff’s consolidation proposal on May 27.

Hernandez cited Santa Maria’s use of electric buses as a personal draw. Santa Maria Transit Services Manager Gamaliel Anguiano outlined some amenities tied to the city’s electric fleet, such as smartphone charging ports and Wi-Fi access, during the Guadalupe City Council’s May 27 meeting.

Another benefit of unifying with Santa Maria’s bus system is gaining access to certain state and federal grants reserved for regional transit services that serve more than one city, Anguiano said.

For example, the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments provides longterm funding to Santa Maria transit through California’s low carbon transit operations program.

Administered by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Air Resources Board, and State Controller’s Office, the low carbon transit operations program was designed to assist transit agencies to reduce greenhouse gas emission and serve disadvantaged communities, according to Caltrans’ website.

The initiative is one of several inclusions of California’s transit, affordable housing, and sustainable communities program, established by state Legislature in 2014 through state Senate Bill 862.

Partly thanks to state funds from the low carbon transit operations program, SMRT will offer temporary free admission to bus riders who use its consolidated Guadalupe routes between July 1 and 11.

“There are no reasons why this consolidation wouldn’t be a success,” Anguiano told Guadalupe officials and staff at the council’s May 27 hearing.

“As the city of Santa Maria, we already provide public transit service to other communities that are not in Santa Maria.”

Orcutt, Tanglewood, Los Alamos, and New Cuyama were among the areas Anguiano listed as examples of areas with current SMRT routes.

“Adding Guadalupe to the fold is well within our wheelhouse,” Anguiano said. “And it probably makes just as much sense, if not more sense, than some of those other communities— as [Santa Maria and Guadalupe] are very much socially and economically intertwined.”

The Guadalupe City Council ultimately approved Santa Maria staff’s bus consolidation proposal with a 5-0 vote at its May 27 meeting.

On June 3, the Santa Maria City Council followed suit with a 4-0 vote. Santa Maria Councilmember Maribel Aguilera-Hernandez was absent.

“With space launches occurring more frequently, nearby communities have voiced concern over the intensifying noise and its effect on their quality of life,” Carbajal said in press materials. “This legislation is a crucial step forward in equipping communities with the necessary resources to reduce the disruptive impact of sonic booms and protect their wellbeing.”

While presenting the study employing 25 high-tech monitoring stations across 500 square miles of the Central Coast, Gee said residents can hear sonic booms up to five times a month.

The study found SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, the same one launched on June 8, took flight from the Vanderberg base 46 times in 2024, almost once per week.

The sonic boom study has monitored 11 launches so far, with plans to track more throughout 2025, according to a press release from Vandenberg.

U.S. Space Force Col. Mark Shoemaker, Space Launch Delta 30 and Vandenberg’s host installation commander, said in press materials that it’s a significant focus area for the base.

“We’re encountering new challenges, such as the phenomenon of sonic booms during ascent along the coast of California,” Shoemaker said. “This situation presents opportunities for research, and we’re currently working on modeling these effects to better understand and account for them in operational planning.”

Once a relatively rare occurrence, rockets are launching from the Vandenberg base with increasing frequency. With each launch comes a sound loud enough to disturb anyone in the nearby area. People 100 miles away in Ventura County can feel the sonic booms’ rumbles, according to Brigham Young University physics professor Kent Gee, who presented research findings to the Acoustical Society of America in May. “We are in the process of understanding these microclimates and creating a threedimensional map of sound to understand how launches impact different areas,” Gee said while presenting. “The data we have collected is already yielding surprises.”

The research collaboration between Brigham Young, the U.S. Space Force, CSU Bakersfield, the Federal Aviation Administration, SpaceX, and NASA studied rocket launches’ complex sonic boom patterns to understand launch acoustics.

As the number of rocket launches from Vandenberg continues to increase, some Central Coast residents aren’t happy with the sounds they emit. Many shared their frustrations with the United States Air Force through four town halls in January before a conservative nonprofit sued the California Coastal Commission for denying Vandenberg’s request to increase SpaceX launches.

Congressman Salud Carbajal (D-Santa Barbara) introduced the Space Launch Noise Mitigation Study Act on June 6. If passed, the bill would require the Department of the Air Force to conduct a feasibility study for creating a grant program, which would make recommendations on how to limit launch noise and provide residents with technological equipment to mitigate launch noise in their homes and businesses.

alking along dirt paths in the Santa Maria Riverbed, there’s not much to see but dry brush and the occasional jackrabbit. y In the distance, a group of people appear among the bushes.

On June 8, members of C.A.R.E.4Paws, the Street Dog Coalition, and Santa Barbara County Animal Services journeyed into the riverbed with Gorilla Carts full of vaccines and parasite treatment in search of unhoused pet families they could provide s with physical examinations and vaccines. The effort was the fourth pet wellness event C.A.R.E.4Paws and Street Dog Coalition hosted in the Santa Maria Riverbed since the county and others started removing encampments last August.

Along with rabies, distemper, and Bordetella vaccines, volunteers offered free bags of pet food, water, Greenies treats for pets’ teeth, wipes for eye infections, harnesses, and edible broade spectrum de-wormer. Santa Barbara County Animal Services also provided microchips and dog licenses.

“We’re not a full-service vet, but we can do a lot of the basic care,” C.A.R.E.4Paws co-founder and executive director Isabelle Gullö told the Sun before the June 8 event. “When we roll out our mobile units [like these in the future] ... any family that struggles to pay for basic services can show up and get them for low cost. If someone can’t afford to pay, they can pay on a sliding scale, or we will comp their services, depending on their situation.”

While passing through a dusty trail in the riverbed, Mobile Clinic Services Coordinator Christy Todek said the clinics operate Tuesday to Friday and every other Sunday in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.

“The mobile clinic is our largest program now.

Last year, we helped 19,200 dogs and cats through that program alone, Gullö told the Sun. “Every Tuesday, we’re in Lompoc. Every Wednesday, we’re in Santa Maria. Thursdays, we usually go to Grover Beach. And the first Sunday of every month, we’re in Oceano.”

The June 8 clinic was designed specifically for unhoused pet families. The three organizations said they plan to host mobile clinics specifically for such families every three months.

Property owners beware You’re now on the hook for your tenants’ poor fireworks decisions

T

he Fourth of July is coming soon, and that means that hundreds of people in Lompoc will likely be detonating fireworks in every sector of town. Many of these people rent the space they live in.

In a December 2024 Lompoc City Council meeting, the police chief reported that “From June 1 to July 25 (2024), public safety dispatchers received 733 calls regarding fireworks, up from 324 in 2023, Chief Kevin Martin told the council last summer. Calls for service on July 4, numbered 257, up from 141 a year earlier, Martin said. Of that number, 136 involved fireworks matters, compared with 51 in 2023,” according to Noozhawk reporting (“Lompoc Looks to Launch Aerial Monitoring in Fireworks Crackdown,” Dec. 25, 2024).

That’s a big increase for a city the size of Lompoc.

The Lompoc municipal code specifically prohibits people to “discharge, project, or otherwise fire or make use of any safe and sane fireworks on, over, or in any public street, sidewalk alley, park, or parking area, without

prior written permission of the fire chief,” and to “possess, store, sell, display, ignite, discharge, project, or otherwise fire or make use of dangerous fireworks anywhere in the city at any time.”

“Dangerous fireworks” are defined as those that explode or fly through the air; safe and sane are those that don’t explode or leave the ground.

So, who is responsible when a renter is shooting off fireworks? Well, the municipal code says, “the person in control of a property (parcel owner) shall be in violation of this chapter if any person sells, possesses, ignites, explodes, projects, or otherwise fires or makes use of fireworks on the property in violation of this chapter, regardless of the intent, knowledge, or negligence of the person in control of the property.”

In the past, someone who directly identified the person violating the ordinance had to make a complaint to the city before any enforcement action could be taken—that has changed this year.

Fire Chief Brian Fallon said the city would hire Overwatch Aero based in Solvang to help

identify those responsible for the flurry of illegal fireworks. “What the aircraft does is it does pinpoint the parcel as well as the illegal activity that’s taking place on that property,” according to Noozhawk reporting. He said that Santa Maria has conducted a similar effort and reported a 70 percent recovery rate on fines.

Owners of apartment buildings, mobile home parks, and single-family rental homes should take note: You will be held responsible for the actions of your tenants if they are igniting illegal fireworks. The fines related to the “possession, use, storage, sale, or display of dangerous fireworks” start at $1,500 for the first offense and up to $3,500 for subsequent violations in one year.

So, if you own a rental property, it would be best to inform your tenants that the use of fireworks on your property isn’t allowed unless you the owner are willing to pay the penalty.

Maybe this year will be a little quieter than years past. If so, it’s worth the cost of collecting the information. If not, then collecting the fines will be more than enough to pay for the added surveillance and may be enough to prevent illegal discharges next year after property owners pay the fines. m Ron Fink writes to the Sun from Lompoc. eruptions, hives, earaches, occasional or constant low-grade cough, watery eyes, chest pressure, and more. Many individuals have had these symptoms with no idea of cause.

In mid-March of this year, the state Department of Pesticide Regulations launched a long overdue app that will notify anyone within a mile radius of a restricted agriculture chemical.

Here is the link: spraydays.cdpr.ca.gov.

The state at long last has been pressured to admit the applications of restricted agriculture chemicals do not remain within the 50-foot setbacks claimed as protective zones over the last several decades. Unfortunately, this app does not cover unrestricted pesticide applications, which are more numerous, just as dangerous.

Notification for these chemical applications is voluntary; very few notify.

When calling in a complaint with symptoms from long-distance drift exposure to the county Department of Agriculture, their questions remain restricted to decades-old questions: “Did you smell or see anything?” “Did you get a blood test?” (Insurance doesn’t cover it, and it costs $150.) “Did you see your doctor?” One cannot see nor smell long-distance drift unless it’s epic. And everyone has a different response or responses.

Many symptoms don’t appear until days after exposure. Some individuals become chemically sensitive. Others show no indication.

We are now in a new era. Officials and farmers used to deny long-distance drift as a problem.

They can no longer deny it. Here in South County, parts of Grover Beach, Arroyo Grande, and Nipomo, and all of Oceano and Halcyon are being “washed” by long-distance drift, causing many symptoms. A 2005 informal survey counted 21 symptoms within a 1/4-mile radius of a commercial strawberry field. Many day care facilities, preschools, and schools are within the mile radius of a field or fields; the regulations allow applications near schools as close as half a mile.

First-hand reports show individuals thinking, at first, that their serious symptoms were biologically caused, not chemically. Symptoms almost sent one individual to the ER. How many have gone? Once they understand the relationship of an application with onset of a symptom or symptoms, they are relieved on one hand. Then they become upset that long-distance drift is permissible, and seemingly unstoppable in our political climate at the state level.

H

ow many lawsuits does it take to stop Sable Offshore Corporation?

At least two: One from the Environmental Defense Center and one from the Center for Biological Diversity. Well, two and a restraining order request—and even then, Sable continues its march to open the oil tap.

Both were filed in response to the Office of the State Fire Marshal-granted waiver that’s enabling Sable to move forward with fixing the oil pipeline that caused the Refugio oil spill in 2015. Both were filed because of fear: fear that Sable will be able to turn back on the pipeline, pump oil from offshore facilities, and get it moving into California again.

A judge recently agreed to grant a temporary restraining order request filed in one of the cases, ordering Sable and the fire marshal to halt operations tied to the pipeline’s restart. The Center for Biological Diversity made its June request in response to trouble bubbling under the surface.

On the 10th anniversary of the Refugio oil spill, the oil company announced that it started pumping oil from one of the offshore platforms that had sat idle for a decade—Platform Harmony. Sable made the announcement days after a paddle out commemorating the environmental disaster. Oil was already flowing through a pipeline under their boards.

“The timing was certainly quite painful,” Center for Biological Diversity Senior Counsel Julie Teel Simmonds said. “It definitely felt like a blow.”

At least it didn’t blow, amirite?

Even though that oil wasn’t flowing on land just yet, Simmonds said it could happen “any day.”

Now, it can’t—at least not until after a July hearing.

It’s really the first significant legal hurdle that’s been erected to block Sable’s restart push, and both environmental nonprofits are touting the win,

with the Environmental Defense Center calling it “a victory.”

Hmm. I’m pretty sure they both felt that way after the California Coastal Commission spanked the oil company for pipeline work the state agency felt needed permits.

Even an $18 million fine from the Coastal Commission following a slate of cease-anddesist orders couldn’t stop the company’s forward motion. Like a mad dash to the finish deadline, Sable isn’t stopping until that pipeline is flowing.

Even in light of the ruling, Sable seems to be unphased.

“This court decision does not impede Sable’s preparations for restarting the flow of oil critical to lowering California’s gas prices and stabilizing supply,” Sable Vice President of Environmental and Governmental Affairs Steve Rusch said. “[Sable] will seek to protect our rights and enforce the legal process.”

Sable will seek to pump and flow, just like its predecessors did. The company is, after all, simply trying to flip the switch back on for a facility and pipelines that have been there for decades. But it’s not that simple, right?

And Sable’s actions will likely make future operators’ lives more difficult. State Assemblymember Gregg Hart only needed to point in the company’s direction for his bill that aims to tighten offshore oil drilling regulations.

“I really made the case to my colleagues that Sable is not acting in good faith,” he said.

“Newspaper articles about [Sable’s] behavior … helped me give more impetus to get this bill.”

That bill is headed to the state Senate. And Sable’s reputation is firmly in “don’t ask for permission, don’t beg for forgiveness” territory. m The Canary sometimes forgives. Send comments to canary@santamariasun.com.

The Pacific Conservatory Theatre (PCPA) will host three week-long camps this summer at its Severson Theatre on the Allan Hancock College campus, located at 800 S. College Drive in Santa Maria.

Campers will learn how to build confidence and find their voice while socializing and exploring the whimsical, musical world of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka. PCPA instructors will guide aspiring actors through the fundamentals of musical theater while challenging them with theater games and movement exercises.

PCPA will kick off the summer with the Candy Kids program, which it will host June 16 to 21 from 9 a.m. to noon for kids ages 8 to 12.

Teatro PCPA, also for kids 8 to 12, will be offered in partnership with Artists Ink in Salinas to emphasize Spanish language and Latino culture. The program will run June 23 to 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will cost $30 per camper. Campers in Teatro PCPA will also receive a daily meal.

PCPA will conclude its summer camps with Pure Imagination, a program for kids ages 13 to 18. The program will take place from July 13 to 18 from 9 a.m. to noon and, like the Candy Kids program, will cost $250 per camper. For more information, visit pcpa.org/summer-youth-camp.

Santa Ynez author releases Central Coastbased novel

Santa Ynez Valley-based author Jamie Baker released his new novel, You Ate It, on May 25. The 368-page novel addresses school shootings, vigilante justice, drug addiction, sex, and politics.

You Ate It tells the story of a teenager named Michael who has a big idea that makes him rich and lands him in Silicon Valley. Years later, after seeing his pregnant wife murdered in a school shooting, Michael builds a new family on the Central Coast, where he reinvents himself as a chef and opens The Pretentious Boar and Ale House.

“Previous bestselling novels by other writers, stories that were set in and around the Santa Ynez Valley region, helped to put the area on wine destination travel maps,” Baker said in press materials. “This story tells the tale of those that continue to live and work here.”

Two characters and their hospitality business in the novel were inspired by chefs Clark Staub and his wife, Jill Davie, who own and operate Full of Life Flatbread in Los Alamos.

Corazón del Pueblo showcases local high school students’ illustrations depicting Mexican identity, fight for social justice

A

black ball gown decorated with yellow and white flowers depicted by a Righetti High School student was the one she dreamed of wearing at her quinceañera.

But when ICE agents swarmed her neighborhood, the first-year student and undocumented immigrant remained trapped, hiding in her house on the day that should’ve been all about her.

As one of seven children and the oldest of five sisters, the student, whose name was withheld to protect her identity, said she understood why her parents couldn’t afford to reschedule.

“ICE was around, and my parents were scared something was going to happen, so I didn’t have a party,” the student said. “We couldn’t even go out.

They couldn’t take me to my basketball practice.

It’s scary. I don’t want to leave everything behind and get arrested or treated badly because of my skin color.”

The dress was at the center of an illustration she displayed on May 30 for Nuestra Lotería, a public exhibition showcasing artwork made by students like her from Ernest Righetti and Santa Maria high schools, at the Santa Maria Fairpark.

The exhibition was hosted by Corazón del Pueblo, a cultural and creative arts nonprofit.

As part of a project designed to teach them different communication methods, students chose social justice or cultural heritage-based topics, drew matching illustrations on 11-by-14inch canvases, and then explained their projects to their peers via research essays, poems, or presentations.

Students depicted suffering, separation, immigration, identity, tradition, the next generation, field workers, homelessness, voice, strength, and balance as part of their Nuestra Lotería illustrations. The reimagined traditional Mexican bingo board squares highlighted the modern issues they battle as students in today’s United States.

Community members were greeted with fresh tamales and a Danza Mexicana performance by Coatlicue Atlachinolli as they strolled through the maze of wheeled, black room dividers displaying 217 students’ pieces. Local musician Jose Rendón played the soothing sound of the saxophone with songs like Frank Sinatra’s My Way. The girl in the black ball gown depicted by the first-year Righetti student is meant to be her at her dream quinceañera. The girl dons a charro hat matching her dress as two spotlights shine beside her. In front of her lies a scattered arrangement of flowers and traditional red,

green, and white coconut candies representing the Mexican flag.

Another first-year Righetti student represented the underpaid with a drawing of two hands holding a ripped check with a strawberry field in the background.

That student, whose name was withheld for anonymity, said she wanted to highlight the struggle of fieldworkers specifically. The red lunchbox below the torn check represents the ones her uncles take to lunch with them when they go to work in their fields every day. The check for $300.70 is made out to one of those uncles.

One Righetti sophomore used an all-gray scene to illustrate the violent reality of school shootings.

“I know school shootings happen a lot in the world, but, since one hasn’t happened here, they aren’t really talked about in our community,” the sophomore said. “It’s not a worry that’s on my mind 24/7, but, sometimes, I’ll just be sitting in class and think, ‘What if somebody were to shoot up the school right now?’ It’s scary.”

The sophomore said she immigrated to the United States with her family when she was 6 years old. As an undocumented immigrant, she said she’s worried ICE agents will abduct and deport her at school or her parents at work.

“It’s frustrating—having to be like, ‘Should I worry about school? Am I even going to be in this country tomorrow? Should I even be looking into colleges in the U.S.,’” the sophomore said.

“We’re all told, ‘You’re doing this to get into a good college,’ but am I going to be allowed to get into college?”

She sees her friends and family members experiencing the same reality. The sophomore said she doesn’t know anybody who’s immigrated to the U.S. and achieved the American dream.

“Why are we being told that we’re going to achieve all these things? When we get here, it’s just work,” she said. “Everybody has to work to have a nice life, but we’re working and not getting that.”

But, at the same time, the sophomore persists with a positive perspective.

“There’s still a chance these things will end when the president’s term ends,” she said. “I’m trying to hold onto that flicker of hope that there is a possibility these people are not trying to get rid of me.” m Reach Staff Writer Reece Coren at rcoren@ santamariasun.com.

Anna: I hadn’t heard the billing of this as Anderson’s “funniest film,” and I’ll agree that it didn’t strike me as particularly laugh-outloud funny, but that isn’t to say it wasn’t a total delight to watch. There’s something pretty impressive about Anderson being able to have such specific stylization that works throughout so many movies, this one included. You go in knowing what to expect—meticulously thought-out sets and costuming, a banger of a cast, and quirky characters all around. While the storyline always moves things along, my motivation for watching Anderson’s movies Glen: I love Wes Anderson’s films—every one on repeat is the absolute richness of the sets, of them, including this one—but the marketing often resembling a sort of stage production. campaign is claiming this is Anderson’s I can’t say it has won my heart as my favorite funniest film yet. The story is cleverly told as Zsa-zsa dreamers, and Zsa-zsa dreams big. es Anderson (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou) directs his script cowritten with Roman Coppola about shady international businessman Zsa-zsa Korda (Benicio Del Toro), whose many enemies are constantly trying to assassinate him. Believing his death may be imminent, he decides to make his novitiate nun daughter, Liesl (Mia Threapleton), his sole heir and directs her in carrying out his most audacious project yet.

Satirizing capitalism and corruption, power, and moral irresponsibility, The Phoenician Scheme holds a mirror to human failings while exploring the meaning of family ties. If you don’t already love Anderson, this probably won’t win you over, but for fans, this hits the spot.

Anna: His films are always a welcome treat.

They’re funny and clever and quick-witted.

Zsa-zsa has nearly died so many times that his mortality is actually starting to seep in. He’s got

to win over Liesl, and while it’s touch-and-go for a bit, he eventually does. Cera as lovestruck Bjorn is great: charming and dorky, and his character takes us on some fun twists. Still, it’s a film that I would always say yes to and still do today. Between Richard Dreyfus’ narration and the troop of boys’ adventures, this film weaves an overall story of childhood friendship and how the little moments become so significant with time.

“Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand.” Directed

by Stuart Rosenberg, this 1967 anti-establishment film encapsulates the anti-authoritarianism of the ’60s. Set in the early 1950s, the film follows decorated World War II veteran Lucas “Luke” Jackson, who drunkenly destroys several parking meters in Florida, landing him a two-year sentence on a chain gang and setting up an epic battle of wills between Luke and the prison camp warden, Captain (Strother Martin), and his ruthless chief guard, Boss Godfrey (Morgan Woodward).

Along the way, Luke wins over prisoner leader Dragline (George Kennedy in in an Oscar-winning supporting actor turn), as well as his fellow inmates, who are impressed by his resistance to authority. Luke’s defiance, tenacity, and resilience inspire, and the film contains decided Christian imagery with Luke as a redeemer. After winning a 50 hardboiled egg-eating challenge, Luke is depicted in Jesus’ crucifixion position. After he learns of his mother’s death, he sings “Plastic Jesus,” accompanying himself on the banjo.

A

fter he drank himself into the hospital with cirrhosis last November, Steven Fretz had to be revived. The doctors gave him two choices: stop drinking alcohol and live or keep drinking and die.

Fretz had been a chef for 25 years at that point, making his living in a drinking world that was slowly sucking the life from him.

Cooks are nearly twice as likely to die from alcohol addiction compared to the average person, according to Business Insider. American Addiction Centers found that 40 percent of food service workers consider casual substance use to be a part of their work culture, while only 31 percent don’t use drugs and alcohol at all.

After spending two weeks in the hospital, Fretz made his decision: It was time to go sober.

On June 2, Fretz, the executive chef and owner of the Coast Range steakhouse in Solvang, added a new drink menu for patrons thirsting for an alternative to alcohol. The menu consists of six cocktails, three wines, four beers, and two adaptogens—all of which are nonalcoholic.

“I hadn’t even thought of the nonalcoholic program until I went to the Montage Hotel in Park City, Utah,” Fretz said. “I saw this beautiful nonalcoholic cocktail list, and I felt jealous.”

Solutions. Nonalcoholic beverages now comprise a $3 billion industry, a November report from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said. Market researcher NielsenIQ reported a 31 percent increase in retail sales for nonalcoholic drinks from 2023 to 2024 and predicts sales will double in the next five years.

Looking to step foot into the budding industry, Fretz designed a nonalcoholic cocktail menu that stands out for its unique flavors.

After he began making the mixes and realized the emerging solution seemed diluted, Fretz created his own house-made syrup using Coast Range’s pastry department’s glucose, water, citric acid powder, and liquid stevia to give drinks the viscosity of their alcoholic counterparts.

NO ALCOHOL, NO PROBLEM: Coast Range’s $17 nonalcoholic Mint to be Sober cocktail is made of Lyre Spirit Company’s white cane spirit, yuzu, mint, and blueberries. Fretz said Coast Range gets the blueberries from Chavez Family Farms in Santa Maria.

“And then, we put Luxardo cherries on them, just like you would with Mai Tais,” Fretz said.

“It tastes identical to a Fernet Branca in my opinion,” Fretz said.

“This one probably won’t be the most popular on the menu, but it’s my favorite.”
